A very excited $10,000 winner SHEPPARTON’S most popular shoppers’ competition drew to a close on Sunday with a massive total of 68,522 entries. Following six weeks and 15, $1,000 winners drawn, it came down to the final $10,000 draw by Federal Member for Shepparton, Dr Sharman Stone along with GMCU General Manager, René Deen and The Adviser Managing Director, Geoff Adams. Our 2015 GMCU $25,000 Giveaway winner is Tara Tracey of Shepparton East. Tara’s lucky win came from spending $109.50 at Big W in Shepparton and when contacted she was initially speechless. “I think I’m going to cry, this is the best news I’ve had in a long time,” Tara told The Adviser. Tara, a trained nurse who was born and raised in Shepparton is a full time mum with daughter Belle (18 months). Tara and her partner, Tony Glover, are settling on their first home in June, so the timing couldn’t be better Tara said. Tony suffered a serious workplace accident four years ago and is just getting back into the workforce. Dr Stone said, “This certainly is the richest shoppers competition and is great for our area because it gets shoppers shopping, it’s great for business and the wider community. Everybody wins. “I’d like to congratulate the GMCU and The Adviser for another fantastic year running this initiative, and I send a big congratulations to Tara, who is walking away with a $10,000

shopping spree.” René Deen said, “As a major sponsor of this important initiative, the GMCU are again proud to be supporting the local community and local business. “We congratulate the $1,000 winners of this year’s initiative and Tara for being drawn as the $10,000 major prize winner.” The Adviser Managing Director, Geoff Adams said, “Once again we have come to the end of the 2015 GMCU $25,000 Giveaway. “The Adviser is proud to be able to offer this initiative to the local community and to local

businesses. It’s important to shop local and that’s a big part of why we run the giveaway each year. “Congratulations to Tara and her family on this grand prize from the teams at the GMCU and The Adviser.” As part of the competition, winners have to spend their winnings at any of the 153 businesses who participated in the six week initiative. Pick up a copy of The Adviser next week for a full report on the highly successful competition.

Centenary Success With record breaking numbers attending ANZAC Day commemorative services across the country, Shepparton also saw its largest number of people turn out to honour and pay respect to our diggers at the special centenary service. It was a moving experience to see thousands turn out to brave the cold in the early hours of the morning to attend the dawn service, two of whom were brothers and Air Force Cadets, Corporal Steven Vallance and Cadet Under Officer, David Vallance, who were lucky enough to be part of the Catafalque Party and to have been standing around the Cenotaph holding swords in respect of the fallen (left). The Murchison Dawn Service also saw something special take place, when local, Brooklyn McLarty had the chance to lay a wreath, but what made it all the more special was that it was Brooklyn’s 11th Birthday (right). Please your palate with the tastes of our region By David Lee THERE is nothing that compares to a month of great local wine, coupled with exceptional, fine food and live entertainment, to set the mood for Aussie Wine Month. Throughout the month of May, the Greater Valley’s best wineries, restaurateurs and cellar doors and will be offering just that, in celebration of Australian wine during Aussie Wine Month. This year though, the third annual celebration’s events will be complemented by 18 restaurants, local pubs and cafés who will be joining the 11 wineries and cellar doors to bring the best of the region to the people of the region. Kicking off on May 1, the whole region will come alive with food, wine and music including cellar tours, music events, long lunches and vintage barrel tastings with winemakers. G oulbu rn Valley Wine A ssociation President, Guido Vazzoler said, “We know that the Goulburn Valley produces a diversity of great wine and we’re now backing it up with great events to complete those wines. “As well as the wineries we also have quite a few local restaurants, pubs and cafés participating this year, which is the first time in the event’s three year history. “This is a really good opportunity for wineries to offer something different and also to tie that experience in with great wine.

Trench gun given new lease on life in time for ANZAC Centenary REFURBISHED IN TIME FOR ANZAC DAY… Local Tallygaroopna resident, Tony Farrell helped to refurbish the trench gun (insets) on top of the town’s Soldiers Memorial Hall, just in time for ANZAC Day. Photo: David Lee.

By David Lee THE Tallygaroopna community had the chance to commemorate the ANZAC Centenary with a refurbished trench gun on top of the Soldiers Memorial Hall, thanks to the handy work of one of the town’s locals. Tony Farrell spent 100 hours over the last three months volunteering his time to repair the 100 year old, rotting Light Minenwerfor Trench Gun, which had been captured from the German Army in WWI and given to the Tallygaroopna RSL to erect on the hall at the time of its construction in 1923. The trench gun’s wheels had all but rotted away, the timber had collapsed, the axle and hubs were removed for safety reasons years ago and it was sitting so low it could barely be seen from below, which is what drove Tony to restore it to its former glory, fabricating new wheels, hub and axles for the gun and repairing rusted steel work on the frame as well as making new support brackets, and all in time for the ANZAC Centenary. Tony said, “It’s great to see an element of the hall back the way it was when the hall was built. “We had been talking about it for 10 years and so, because of the approaching centenary, we approached the Tallygaroopna Lions Club, who applied for a grant to pay the $2,000 cost for materials to repair it. “It’s something the town can be proud of.”

Dogs free to roam at permanent park OFF-LEASH DOG PARK SUCCESS… Greater Shepparton City Councillors and Mayor, Cr Dennis Patterson voted to make the temporary off-leash dog park in Shepparton permanent, after the park’s successful trial. Photo: David Lee.

By David Lee THE success of Shepparton’s first offleash dog park has lead to the decision to transform it into a permanent park, allowing local pooches to roam free and socialise. The permanent park will see $62,000 of works carried out to make the Ducat Reserve site in Paterson Road a more usable and secure area including permanent fencing, signage, bins, seating, drinking fountain and car parking spaces. Council commenced the off leash dog park trial in March 2014 and has observed the site for the past 12 months, with its success potentially leading to other locations around Shepparton being transformed into trial locations.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dennis Patterson said, “Owners and their pets will be able to enjoy a great area on a permanent basis once all the work has been completed. “It will take council time to complete all the works, as we are coming into the cooler months and wet weather may impact on construction. Once the site is made permanent the same rules apply from the trial including all animals need to be registered to ensure everyone can enjoy the area at the same time.” T he perma nent site w ill conti nue to be monitored carefully by the Animal Management team. Residents need to ensure rules are obeyed for the off leash dog park.

LETTERs

Opinion

Letters to the Editor A FATALITY WAITING TO HAPPEN

Dear Editor, I don’t think I’m being melodramatic when I say that the Balaclava Road and Corio/Monash Street intersections are a fatality waiting to happen! Obviously if this did occur, the “relevant authorities” would galvanise into action, but a little prevention is worth a ton of cure. A simple solution is the extremely urgent installation of traffic lights. At peak hours in particular, we have a huge volume of Corio Street and Monash Street traffic (heavy buses, cars, pedestrian, cyclists, kindergarten, and primary/secondary school students) seeking to either ‘dogleg’ around Balaclava Road to access GV Health areas in Monash and Graham Streets, or access Balaclava Road (which has the added dangers of heavy commercial vehicles including prime movers and ‘B’ Double trucks) or Corio Street. There is a continuous stream of traffic coming from both easterly and westerly directions, with southbound and northbound traffic attempting. There is a pre-school/childcare centre on the corner of the intersection with parents in vehicles or on foot, depositing their children – some using the ‘recommended crossing point,’ which is also placed exactly at the intersection. I must say that whoever approved the kindergarten site for ‘permitted use’ must not consider much of the safety of children, because the whole area is an absolute ‘deathtrap.’ At the present moment, we have what appears to be NBN works happening in Balaclava Road, which has added its own form of mayhem. I must say that the entire area is utter chaos, with an inevitable disaster imminent. We have various workmen with

stop/slow signs, witches hats dividing single lane traffic and total traffic jams in Balaclava Road as westbound traffic attempts to either turn right at Monash Street (being blocked by oncoming eastbound traffic) or alternatively driving straight through westbound traffic which cannot proceed in the single lane. This ridiculous state of affairs has to be seen to be believed – lives are at stake here, and action must be taken immediately. Yours sincerely, Bill Kennedy, Shepparton WILL THE STATE TRIUMPH Dear Editor, Be warned! An unholy push is accelerating to have all children vaccinated. Once this is in place, old people and nursing home residents may well be forced to have vaccinations or be subjected to refused care. PM Tony Abbott has said that unvaccinated children are a threat to the state. We have heard this before. Emperor Diocletian persecuted the Christians because they would not sacrifice animals and thus a threat to public wellbeing and a foe of the state. Parents are to be denied the right of seeking religious exemption from vaccinating their children. However, the state’s law givers are the nation’s gods and we are to believe them. It’s a religious thing. The state has made itself into a religious cult. That’s why we have cabinet ‘ministers’ to administer their state laws. To say that unvaccinated children are a threat to the vaccinated is like saying hungry children are a threat to well fed children. Will people sit idly by and allow the state to triumph? Yours sincerely, Jay Nauss, Glen Aplin

Change of ownership transforms Shepparton Gardens

POSITIVE CHANGES… Shepparton Gardens Manager, Paul MacFarlane with long time Resident, Nancy Wilson, who says she is “Happier now in the village than I’ve ever been in the past.” Photo: Madeleine Caccianiga.

SHEPPARTON Gardens’ residents are astounded at the consistent, positive changes new village owner Ingenia Communities has brought to their rental retirement community since it acquired the village back in January 2014. Village Resident since 2008, Nancy Wilson said, “I’m happier now in the village than I’ve ever been in the past,” she said. “The staff are very helpful, the gardens that have been put in this year are lovely and I really enjoy my Monday afternoon chats with the girls as the boys play bowls.” Norm Sanders and his wife June recently moved into the Shepparton Gardens village and said, “We are both extremely impressed with the community, the meals here are as good as home-cooked meals and it’s very peaceful, especially of a night time – we’re very happy with our choice to move in.” Shepparton Gardens Manager Paul MacFarlane said he and his wife Michelle, “Have worked really hard to improve the village to its current standard,” since Ingenia Communities acquired it in January 2014. “We’ve made physical changes which have improved the village’s aspect and liveability; created a pet-friendly environment, and increased our service offering by giving residents the option of tailored meal plans, assisted care and a wide range of games and entertainment.” “We run a daily exercise class, focused on improving residents’ health and wellbeing and it’s been a huge success, with more than 10 residents per day attending the sessions. “Most importantly though, we’ve focused on making our residents happy and attracting new, like-minded residents, so we can nurture the sense of community within the village.” Shepparton Gardens is located at 60 Poplar Avenue, Shepparton, to request a free information pack, phone 1800 445 464.

Saluting their service grants for Murray MERRIGUM and District Historical and Education Society and the Nathalia District Hospital are the latest local organisations to be successful in obtaining grants through the Federal Government’s Saluting Their Service Grants program. The Nathalia District Hospital has been granted $245 that will go toward purchasing a new display cabinet, which will allow the hospital to display wartime memorabilia for the residents in the Banawah Residential unit. The Merrigum and District Historical and Education Society have been granted $1,640 that is set to go toward the installation of a Second World War Avenue of Honour at the Merrigum Primary School. The Avenue of Honour will be in conjunction with the replanting of the First World War Avenue of Honour, where they were granted funds through the ANZAC Centenary Local Grants program. Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said, “The Saluting Their Service program aims to honour the service and sacrifice of Australia’s servicemen and women in wars, conflicts and peace keeping operations. The program should promote appreciation and develop understanding of the role those who served have played in shaping our nation.” For further information on the Saluting Their Service Grants program, phone the Department of Veterans’ Affairs on 1800 026 185 or visit www.dva.gov.au

Plants donated to support garden projects

A GREEN THUMB DONATION… Kialla Children’s Centre student, Maddison Arnold, 3, Billabong Garden Complex Manager, Tracy Lamont and Kialla Children’s Centre student, Ivy Vallance, 3 with a strawberry plant that was one of the many plants donated by Billabong Garden Complex to the Kialla Children’s Centre, Shepparton Villages and Notre Dame College. Photo: David Lee.

KIALLA Children’s Centre, Shepparton Villages and Notre Dame College are all a little brighter and greener thanks to the team at the Billabong Propagation Nursery, who recently donated plants to the three organisations. Nursery Manager, Tracy Lamont said, “It is great to be able to give something back to the community that supports us. “Being a not-for-profit community organisation ourselves, we understand how difficult it can be relying on support to get your projects off the ground. “The plants that were donated were grown by Billabong’s supported employees, and they have been put to good use, with each of the organisations already having planted them into their respective garden projects. This is just another way in which local people with a disability can be a part of, and contribute to, their local community. “The staff and children at the Kialla Children’s Centre were very excited to receive the new plants and have incorporated them into the children’s outdoor play areas, beautifying the playground and providing a sensory garden.

“We are told some of the children at the Kialla Children’s Centre also enjoyed helping plant out some of their new garden beds, which is great that they get to enjoy the gardening experience at such an early age and there may just be the makings of some future garden enthusiasts!” Shepparton Villages CEO, Kerri Rivett said, “What a lovely surprise to receive a truck load of free plants. “The gardens in and around our three villages are a constant source of enjoyment and create a relaxing atmosphere. Many of the plants attract the bird life, which can be heard from the resident’s rooms or units. “Gardens are an important part of a residents’ life at Shepparton Villages. They have a calming effect on people and can make you feel better on days when you need a lift. “I thank Billabong Garden Complex for the donation.” Each and every purchase at Billabong’ supports local people with a disability, be it a plant, giftware or allied product. Billabong Garden Complex is open seven days a week and is located at 295 Numurkah Road, Shepparton.

163 of city’s tree hazards to be repaired OVER the coming years, damage to roads, kerbs, footpaths and street furniture caused by some of the city’s plane trees are set to be repaired, with the first 72 along High Street and the Maude Street Mall taking place this financial year. The works, which are set to begin on May 4, will involve replacing asphalt, enlarging granite sand surrounds, replacing damaged kerbs and replacing damaged footpaths to minimise disruption to the trees, with eight plane trees in High Street planned for removal to eliminate the risk of further damage to public infrastructure. The works will also see the right hand lane closure east bound along High Street from Wyndham Street to North Street from May 4 to May 15 and the left hand lane closure west bound along High Street from North Street to Wyndham Street from May 15 to May 27. Other works from Welsford to Wyndham Street and the Maude Street Mall expected to have minimal disruptions to traffic and shoppers. Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure, Steve Bowmaker said, “My teams have come up with some innovative treatments to reduce hazards and conserve as many trees as we possibly can but eight of the trees need to be removed to limit damage to public assets and private property. A qualified arborist will be on-site during these works to ensure that tree conservation measures are used at all times. “These works supplement existing works

As an example, a residential property size of 5,985m 2 would be expected to pay an estimated cost of $1,119 over 10 years, which is an estimated average of $111 per year. THE SPIRIT OF OUR ANZACS… In the spirit of the ANZAC Centenary we are sharing a couple more ANZAC themed photos that have been sent to us. The photo on the left is of Lesley Michael Butterfield (more affectionately known as Pud), who served in WWII. ‘Pud’ returned to Shepparton from the war but unfortunately died in the arms of his mates in 1948 at the Army Hall on High Street in Shepparton. The photo on the right shows a scene from October 9, 1963 where Laurie Phillips, Blair McKay, Tom Phillips and the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe were attending a RSL function held at the Hotel Australia. Sir Rohan was in Shepparton to lay the foundation stone for the new Shepparton Civic Centre.

THREE new options for the electoral structure of Greater Shepparton City Council have been released, with submissions now being sought on whether the municipality will have nine councillors in an unsubdivided council, nine elected from three 3-councillor wards or remain as seven councillors in an unsubdivided council. The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) is conducting an electoral representation review of the municipality and has considered a range of information, including public submissions, to form its options for an electoral structure that will provide fair and equitable representation for all voters. Submissions should address the proposed options and must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, May 20 and can be made via the online submission form at www.vec.vic.gov.au, email at greatershepparton.review@vec.vic.gov.au, by post to VEC, Level 11, 530 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000 or fax to (03) 9629 8632. ROAD RENAMED… The area highlighted in orange shows an area along Shepparton-Euroa Road, which will be renamed to Coach Road to prevent against confusions that have lead emergency services to be sent kilometres away from the reported emergency. Image: Supplied.

By David Lee DUE to several incidences where the CFA have been dispatched to locations kilometres away from a reported emergency, a section of Shepparton-Euroa Road is set to be renamed to Coach Road. In March 2013, the CFA wrote to Greater Shepparton City Council advising of the safety issues and requesting a proactive approach for renaming Shepparton– Euroa Road, which council responded to, explaining the impracticality of the renaming. The issue was again raised by the CFA in July 2013, who wrote to council stating that the issue was of the highest importance for any emergency service, including volunteers, responding to locations only to find they are actually kilometres away from the event they have been dispatched too. At the council meeting last week, councillors voted to pass the name change, opting to rename the section of road to Coach Road as it was part of the former Cobb & Co Coach route. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dennis Patterson said, “At the recent council meeting, council passed the recommendation to change the name from Shepparton–Euroa Road for Shepparton to be replaced with Coach Road. “The Heritage Advisory Committee last year suggested the name of Coach Road after the Country Fire Authority requested that council make the change to the road name. “This road was used by Cobb & Co Coach in the 1900s and we believe it is appropriate.” Council will now consult with the wider community regarding the replacement name of Coach Road, which will include letters to all affected owners and occupiers.

Locals learn from soccer legend TAKING TIME TO TEE OFF WITH MATES… While soccer superstar, Harry Kewell was in Shepparton running the Harry Kewell Academy clinics, he took the time to tee off at the Shepparton Golf Club with some local mates. MORE than 150 local ‘kids’ had the chance to learn the skills that made former Socceroos player, Harry Kewell a superstar through his Harry Kewell Academy clinic last week, but his visit to Shepparton also saw local Hungry Jacks Proprietor and long time friend of Harry’s, Rob Stojanovski take the opportunity to tee off with the soccer legend at the Shepparton Golf Club. The academy clinics, which were held over two days, provided children with the opportunity to work through a number of drills to practice the core skills of soccer including how to correctly strike a ball. On the second day Harry took participants on during the oneon-one section. Rob said, “It was great to catch up with Harry. We were able to take time out to catch up for dinner and breakfast a couple of times, which we were very lucky to do because of Harry’s schedule. “We didn’t really keep any scores with the game of golf, but if we had have, Harry would have won easily. He always wins because he’s a sportsman. “Harry said the academy was going quite well. He loves working with kids and enjoys being able to pass on his knowledge to them.”

Take the ‘tour’ this weekend THE local community is gearing up for the Powercor Tour de Depot in Shepparton this Sunday, which will see local radio icon, Tommy Jackett join riders at the starting line in support of The Community Fund Goulburn Valley. The inaugural event starts at Victoria Park Lake from 12 noon, where people of all ages and abilities are invited to get on their bikes or cheer on their friends and fellow riders while enjoying family fun festivities at the finish line. Cyclists can select from a leisurely 10km ride around Victoria Park Lake, or a timed event of 20km for more experienced

riders, which includes a $500 cash prize. Tommy says he is looking forward to taking part in the community initiative that will help raise funds for such an important cause. “The Community Fund Goulburn Valley reaches out to the wider community, offering support to friends and families in need. “I’m honoured and proud to be riding in the Powercor Tour de Depot and encourage everyone to get involved and help create a better future for our region.

Powercor Regional Business Manager, Ian Gillingham said, “The community will be invited to enjoy the festivities at the finish line, with fair rides, face painting, market stalls and a sausage sizzle. “With 100 percent of entry fees going directly to The Community Fund, it’s a great way to give back to our community.” Entry fees are $10 for children and students, $20 for adults and $50 for a family of four. For those participating in the timed event, their families will also gain free entry into the community participation ride. Participants are encouraged to sign up now and be part of this fun community initiative, by visiting www. powercortourdedepot.com.au

NAB Auskick kicks off across the region MORE than 2,000 NAB Auskickers are primed and ready for the new season that kicked off in the Goulburn Murray recently, with the 20th NAB AFL Auskick taking shape to be the best yet. The 50 centres in the Goulburn Murray region will either be kicking off soon or have just begun their weekly sessions, making it an ideal time to register.

A F L G o u l b u r n M u r r ay F o o t b a l l Development Manager Mark Lambourn said, “The Auskick program isn’t necessarily aimed at finding the next AFL superstar but rather about giving boys and girls of all abilities an introduction in to our great game. “It doesn’t matter how much they know about football, or how good their kicking or handball skills are, it’s all about having fun,

making friends and being physically active. “In 2015, NAB AFL Auskick packs will be shipped directly to the homes of participants and the pack has undertaken an exciting change. “New participants will receive everything they need to be involved, including a football, backpack, cap, ball pump, footy cards, album and an activity book while returning participants will receive a football, ball pump,

footy cards, sticker sheet and a drawstring boot bag which can be used for favourite footy boots and gear. “As an added bonus all returning Auskickers will receive a t-shirt with their favourite AFL club’s logo on it.” To find your nearest NAB AFL Auskick centre, visit www.aflauskick.com.au and type in your postcode.

with Matthew Chilcott

By Kyle Power IN today’s modern day football, we look at the players that have the big games, who perform on the big stage and who give us that feeling of contentment and glorify them as our heroes and supply our ‘kids’ with knowledge that the ‘good players’ are role models. Where would today’s football be if our ‘kids’ were told about late night benders, domestic violence, illicit drug taking and illegal sport science? I pose this question as the game and the people that make our game and administer it are the real heroes. I’m not suggesting that all players are bending the rules, it’s just a select few who tarnish our great game. Football clubs and families have a role to play, not only in their communities but a wider scope with the current ICE epidemic plaguing this nation and the world. This issue has gone beyond a ‘party drug.’ It’s ruining lives and families, but clubs and players need to take a stand and say ‘enough is enough’. We see that progress has been made, but as the old saying goes ‘it won’t happen overnight but it will happen.’ 95 staff head the dominant Hawthorn Football Club’s payroll and we tend to forget the ‘bit’ players play when it comes to team

achievements. Who would have thought that a ‘membership trainee’ had a little input, although quite minimal, into making the Hawks the powerhouse they are simply by generating members to pay their ‘hard earned,’ leading to a domino effect that flows onto the players/coaches, with the finished product standing with a cup at the end of a season. The unrecognisable people and those who don’t get the plaudits can’t be underestimated for the tireless and committed attitude they show towards their football clubs. The role of playing coaches in our game, particularly in country football, is a more character driven decision and has been the masterstroke of the board and the people behind the scenes. A coach can’t select himself but what about the ‘bit’ players who drive such decisions? So, the next time we see a future Brownlow Medallist or future country football star spare a thought for those who have guided their development and shown them the right values, it would be the families and club personnel behind the scenes who play the biggest role. Kyle Power is a member of the 98.5 OneFM football commentary team and can be heard every Saturday morning from 9:30am.
