Shepparton manufacturer supports Chamber Awards
By David Lee THE local arts community are looking forward to the next stages of the new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), after Greater Shepparton City Council gave the green light for it to be built along the shores of Victoria Park Lake. Having released the Business Case for the new SAM for community consultation in February, 1,781 responses were received over the eight week period, with 76 percent of respondents supporting the recommendation of the Business Case, 19 percent being opposed to the project and 5 percent partial to the idea. New snack line marks beginning of upgrades at SPC STAGE ONE COMPLETE… Premier, Daniel Andrews was in Shepparton last week, announcing the completion of the first stage of SPC’s $100M investment. Photo: Supplied.
THE launch of a new, state-of-the-art snack line at SPC last week, officially kicked off the delivery of the first stage of the company’s $100M investment program. The new line can produce any of SPC’s food products in cup format. It has an improved gentler cooking process that produces higher quality product. One of SPC’s exciting new innovations is SPC ProVital - a brand that delivers high quality product for people who have difficulty opening packaging or in some cases swallowing food. SPC Chief Financial Officer, James Harvey said, “SPC has worked with our suppliers to deliver this first major milestone in our investment plan in just six months – that’s record time from ordering to operating. We were determined to produce this
season’s fruit using the new line with our new-look snack cups, which are in store now. “We’re excited about the potential of SPC ProVital because it’s the first of its kind for the healthcare market. It’s a range of easyopen portion-control fruit that is more accessible for consumers and reduces waste during serving and consumption.” SPC’s incoming Managing Director, Reg Weine said he was excited by the opportunities ahead. “Our $100M investment program will continue to build SPC’s capability and capacity as we transition to a modern branded food business. Importantly, it allows us to deliver product and packaging innovation, efficiency and productivity improvements and extend the brand as we enter new channels and markets.”
Local recognised with highest level of honour By David Lee LOCAL resident and one of the pillars of the community, Millicent McNeill received recognition at the highest level of Australia Red Cross (ARC) recently, receiving an Honorary Life Membership Citation for her admirable work over the past 27 years. Having actually started her relationship with the ARC in 1967 helping with a door knocking appeal, Millicent officially joined the Shepparton unit of the service in 1988 and since then has held many roles at branch, regional and divisional levels. During her time with the ARC, Millicent has helped organise events such as regional lunches, barbeques and gown of the year days but it was her work as an emergency services volunteer that she says was the most memorable. Millicent said, “I like to be involved in things outside the home and enjoy providing practical hands-on help out in the community and that was the defining reason that I decided to join. “The ARC is all about helping people and through that you get to know a lot of interesting people. “I was thrilled to receive the Honorary Life Membership Citation. You don’t do these things to get awards. It’s pretty special. “My journey with them has been interesting. I’ve enjoyed it and will keep going with it for as long as I can. “The emergency work was the most memorable. The 1993 floods in Shepparton and the 2011 floods in Loddon Malley really stick in my mind.

Concern at Labor’s lack of interest LABOR’S LACK OF INTEREST ADDRESSED… Shadow Treasurer, Michael O’Brien visited the region last week to discuss issues surrounding Labor’s lack of interest in investing in Shepparton, alongside Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell. Photo: Alicia Niglia.
By David Lee A VISIT from Shadow Treasurer, Michael O’Brien last week, showed the former coalition’s concern for the lack of interest and investment in the Goulburn Valley shown by the Labor Government. Michael said, “A lot of money was put into Shepparton by the former Government, but we knew there was more to do and we were prepared to do it. Unfortunately the current government seems to have backed away from that and that’s a real shame for Shepparton, because Shepparton does deserve better. “We’ve seen that the GV Health does need an upgrade and we need to see some real work in expanding those facilities. “We understand there is a lot of concern in Shepparton’s rail network. The people want to see more frequent services to and from Melbourne and we would certainly like to
see that happen. “We had some money on the table in making the bypass a reality. I’ve never seen a government get elected who hasn’t promised a single thing to Shepparton. Labor needs to stop neglecting this area.” Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell said, “Shepparton is where my heart is and it’s disappointing to fight for a number of years to get a commitment for a hospital and you just have that in grasp, have the commitment there and then for a change of government to come in and lose that has been a tremendous disappointment to me. “I will be fighting for all industry in the Goulburn Valley to make sure that we get good investment in this area, jobs growth and that our young people have the opportunities for education and employment.”
An ambassador and inspiration By David Lee ON the lead up to this year’s MS Walk and Fun Run, former local resident, Adriana Condello (Grasso) is preparing to hand over more than $129,000 net profit to MS Australia, and to make it all the more special, she will be handing it over as a newly announced MS Ambassador. Taking place on Sunday, May 31 in Melbourne, the 10th annual MS Walk and Fun Run aims to see $1.7M raised to help toward the treatment of those with MS and to help find a cure for the disease. Adriana said, “I feel very honoured to have been given the title of, and the opportunity to be an, MS Ambassador. I am hoping that through my new appointment I can help others with the disease. “It’s a good way to be able to give back for all the help I have received over the years and now I have the chance to be that help for somebody else. “I am looking forward to this year’s event. It’s always a good day. There are 40 people in the team this year, which is a big effort. “The walk and fun run is important for me because it changed my life four years ago and

MANY DOING IT TOUGH THIS WINTER
Dear Editor, A growing number of our neighbours will face a lonely winter this year with as many as seven percent, or 1.5 million Australians predicted to be considered isolated or very isolated this year. Having friends around us makes us more resilient to life’s knocks and challenges. Red Cross helps people of all ages who are doing it tough. We help isolated people reconnect with their communities by assisting them to join social groups and build new friendships. Red Cross also provides free phone calls to thousands of elderly Australians each day just to check they’re ok. We help people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, those with mental health issues and disadvantaged families who want a better future for their children. Across the Asia Pacific region we are working to provide clean drinking water and better sanitation, and help rebuild lives after major disasters. All of our work relies heavily on the generosity of people like you who donate to Red Cross. I’m asking everyone to dig deep before the June 30 to make sure Red Cross will always be there for our friends and neighbours. To make a tax deductible donation by June 30 call 1800 811 700, go online or use your smartphone to go to our website at redcross.org.au. Yours sincerely, Robert Tickner Chief Executive Australian Red Cross
WASTED MONEY
Dear Editor, The Greater Shepparton City Council needs to look at what they are spending money on. Here they are now looking at a new art centre, which is not needed as they already have a nice art centre, and also council are trying to ruin the Victoria Park Lake’s appeal by imposing
large obstructive buildings on its foreshore. The proposed 3.5 percent rise applied on membership fees at Aquamoves, on top of previous recent rises in fees is also a joke. Do they want people to keep active? It seems not because they keep on putting the fees up, or is it that they are trying to ‘price’ older people and pensioners from using the facility? Yours sincerely, June Reid Shepparton
WHY THE PYJAMAS?
Dear Editor, I have my train ticket to travel to Melbourne with the All Aboard campaigners at 6:30am on Thursday, May 28. What a great opportunity for us to take the message to Parliament about our long-standing requests for a fair V/Line public rail travel option in our large, northern Victorian area. This public transport service includes those bus travellers to Shepparton Station from Griffith, Tocumwal, Cobram and the many outlying smaller townships. Shepparton Station is the hub for travellers to connect with Melbourne. However, at last month’s campaign launch at the Shepparton Station, Mayor, Dennis Patterson’s suggestion to don pyjamas for the trip failed with me and I would like to ask “What is the point to be made by doing this?” We have, and always will need to be dressed and ready for an early train/bus trip to Melbourne. More importantly we are campaigning for more daily, timely direct services to Southern Cross every weekday, public holiday and at weekends. I for one am sure we can put up with being dressed for the occasion. Yours sincerely, Patricia Moran Shepparton V/Line user Want to have your say? Event Organiser, Teresa Carlson told The Adviser, “I have spoken to many enthusiasts who want to ride the Nullarbor’, but hesitate to do it on their own; this is an awesome opportunity to tick a box on the ‘bucket list’. “We anticipate that we will leave from the Maude Street Mall, the ride will see us cross the infamous Nullarbor’ where the roads are awesome, the scenery amazing and the coastline, spectacular. “Stops along the way will include Swan Hill, Mildura, Morgan, Port Augusta, Streaky Bay, Ceduna, Bordertown, Nullarbor Roadhouse, Cocklebiddy, Kalgoorlie and Norseman. All meals are included in the entry fee of $2,200 per driver or $800 per passenger and all other monies raised will go to Cystic Fibrosis Australia, for the data registry and further research into finding a cure for CF. “Accom modation is at the ent rants’ (additional) expense, however it will be sourced for all participants well before the event leaves Shepparton. “There will be back-up vehicles in place, a spares covered trailer to carry excess baggage, swags and spare parts etc. Enquiries are coming in thick and fast for both the Shepparton departure and the initial Perth to Shepparton leg of the journey. Teresa says, “Entries will be limited and registration forms are available upon request with

a deposit of $500 payable on registration. “There will be plenty of laughs and fun along the way and new friends made I’m sure. Cystic Fibrosis is the most common genetic and recessive, life threatening disease affecting our children today. CF attacks the lungs, the digestive system and the quality of life itself. In Australia, we currently have over one million carriers of CF, which equates to a staggering 1 in 25 Australians living with the disease and that number will only rise unless a cure is found. Every four days a child is born with CF; it is the hope of Cystic Fibrosis Australia, that one day CF stands for ‘Cure Found’. By Sarah Knight WHEREVER you go in an Australian home today it would be odd not to find at least one Pental product, all created to make everyday life that much easier. White King was purchased in 2011 joining Pental’s portfolio of market-leading brands including Velvet and Country Life soaps, Sunlight, Softly, Martha’s, Huggie, Little Lucifer and Jiffy Firelighters. Pental currently produce in excess of 300 pallets of finished goods per day and as the business has grown, so has Pental’s investment in the region. General Manager of Operations, Gerard Segrave said, “We have recently commenced our Strategic Capital Investment Program, with the 2016 financial year set to see an investment of $5.3M in the Shepparton manufacturing plant. “We will install a new soap plant; upgrade our current filling equipment and line automation, these projects will deliver significant energy reductions for the plant, as well as yield gains and line efficiencies. “Like many businesses in the region, we owe a lot of our success to the support we receive from the local community. Having a vibrant and successful Greater Shepparton business community is important for the region and
sponsoring the 2015 business awards allows our business to contribute towards that. “Being a member of the chamber, also allows Pental to connect with the wider business groups; the Shepparton region is full of successful businesses and talented people; reaching out to people with shared industry values is a key benefit of being part of the chamber in our eyes,” Gerard said. A l l bu si ne sse s w it h i n t he G re ater Shepparton City Council boundary are eligible to be nominated for an award in this year’s Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Awards. THE Grand Opening of Super Amart’s new Shepparton store saw crowds of over 10,000 curious shoppers stream through the doors over four huge days. eARLY DeTeCTIOn CRUCIAL TO sAVInG sIGHT… Shepparton Optical Services Optometrist, Alan Schmedje is inviting the community to have their eyes tested this week for Macular Degeneration Awareness Week. Photo: Alicia Niglia.
SHEPPARTON Optical Services, in support of the Macular Disease Foundation Australia, is urging local residents to see their local optometrist and take control of their eye health. May 24 to 30 is Macular Degeneration Awareness Week and Shepparton Optical Services Optometrist, Alan Schmedje is warning locals that a high awareness of the chronic illness shouldn’t cause complacency. Macular Degeneration is Australia’s leading cause of severe vision loss and blindness and affects more than 1.15 million Australians over 50, without appropriate prevention and treatment measures, this number is set to increase to 1.7 million by 2030. All Australians over the age of 50 years should have an eye test and make sure their macula is checked. The macula is the central part of the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the
back of the eye. The macula processes all central visual images and is responsible for the ability to drive, see colours clearly, read and recognise faces. Macular degeneration causes damage to the macula, resulting in central vision loss. Alan says, “One in four people over 50 are still not heeding the call to have their eyes tested and their macula checked. “Finding out is as easy as visiting your local optometrist for an eye test and macula check. The very early signs of macular degeneration can now be identified easily by modern technology which enables the optometrist to see the retina at the back of the eye, where the disease develops, and detect early signs of the disease,” Alan said. To book an appointment to have your macula checked, contact Shepparton Optical Service on 5822 1411 or call into 58 High Street, Shepparton.
$50M GrainCorp investment to satisfy increasing demand A $50M investment into GrainCorp Oils’ Numurkah facility announced last week, will see the plant’s efficiency boosted and oilseed crushing capacity increased by 40 percent, with the commissioning still on track for next year as planned. The project involves installation of additional state-of-the-art technology, which delivers a substantially higher oil yield than the current extraction process and further underlines the commitment of GrainCorp to edible oils food manufacturing operations in Australia. The increased efficiency will see a boost in the plant’s crush capacity to 1,000 tonnes per day and also offers the capability to expand quickly and cost-effectively to 1,400 tonnes per day, should demand continue to grow. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of GrainCorp, Mark Palmquist said the project is consistent with the company’s aim to create a strategic hub for oilseeds crushing and refining in Victoria.
“Demand for healthy oils based on canola and other oilseeds continues to grow in Australia, and we are also experiencing steady export growth. Over the past three years canola oil exports from Australia have grown by over 25 percent and we expect recent Free Trade Agreements to create further opportunities to grow exports, in particular in growing Asian markets where consumers are becoming increasingly health conscious.” Member for Shepparton, Suzanna Sheed said, “This investment is a further boost of confidence in the Numurkah region, on top of the $125M investment made by GrainCorp Oils across Australia last year. “It demonstrates that the Goulburn Valley remains an attractive place to invest and continues to be a highly productive region, with diverse businesses opportunities and a strong future. “The flow-on effects from this project will be felt throughout the community for many years”

Don’t bunker down with dirt and grime this Winter
WITH Winter quickly approaching, we’re about to shut ourselves inside for months with all the dirt and grime we accumulated throughout the year. Here are some tips to ensure your home is dust and dirt free before you bunker down.
Clean out your closet
Go through all your wardrobes and get rid of any clothes that you know you no longer need. If the decision is proving difficult, a good rule of thumb is; if you haven’t worn it in two years or it makes you feel guilty, it has got to go. From the keeper’s pile, it’s a great time to mend or wash anything that needs it.
Clean the garbage bins
MEDIA RELEASE
You’re going to be stuck inside with these germ havens all Winter, so now is a great time to give them a thorough clean. Take the bins outside, blast them with water and use a sponge and vinegar to disinfect the bins without any harmful chemicals. Let the bins sit for an hour before rinsing out and allow to dry in direct sunlight, which helps eliminate bacteria.
Wash and disinfect toilet brush holders
A chore that never seems to be done, Winter is a great chance to disinfect the toilet brush holder. When you’re cleaning the bins, also take the holder and the brush outside, and spray thoroughly with a garden hose. Immerse the holder and brush in a bucket of hot water
mixed with 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water. Let everything sit in the solution for a couple of hours, then rinse the holder and brush with a hose and place in direct sunlight to dry.
Dust
Dust and dirt nestle on almost every surface in the house, often completely unnoticed. When we’re confined indoors there’s nothing worse than having dust build up and microfibre cloths are the quickest and easiest way to clear particles of dust. Key hotspots include windowsills, light fixtures and bookshelves. When cleaning blinds, wrap a microfibre cloth around a spatula and slide back and forth between the slats to collect dust. Also don’t forget to give the ceiling fan a wipe over.
Bring out the bedding
Air the comforters, blankets and bedding. When you replace your lighter Summer bedding with Winter warmers, it’s important to give them a good airing first. They’ve been stashed in the cupboard for the last 9 months, so make the most of the Autumn rays and hang them outside for a while. Remember, sunlight is also a natural sanitiser.

I C Y H U E S I N S P I R E S PA C E S A S W I N T E R M O V E S I N D DULUX INTERIOR FORECAST FOR WINTER 2015
Icy landscapes and deep, dark forests will inspire our interiors this winter with touches of warm, pale blonde timbers and plenty of texture added to create an inviting space.
Homeowners should remember that a fresh coat of paint is a simple and inexpensive way to add colour, personality and achieve a place where you feel comfortable, inspired and happy.
It’s the seasonal forecast from leading paint company Dulux, which predicts the growing popularity of neutrals, partnered with inky blues and earthy grey beiges, such as Dulux Blue Ash, Powdered Gum and Mirage Blue, will dominate, all from its moody-inspired Wildland palette.
“Colour is amazing! It can highlight items you want to focus on and can camouflage the elements you wish to hide,” says Lucena-Orr. “It plays a pivotal role in the home as it helps define the feeling and mood of a space and it so simple to create with a simple painting project.”
Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour & Communications Manager says the Wildland palette is all about creating warmth through texture.
Ben Edwards, from architecture and design studio Edwards Moore, says colour choice should always be based on the outcome you are trying to achieve and can be used to transform any room.
“Homeowners might choose deeper shades in dark, earthy colours, such as Dulux Western Myall, with focal points in warmer hues and lighter tones to create a beautiful space.” “Integrating furnishings in natural timbers, and soft fabrics such as fur and wool juxtaposes the brooding colours, which adds that element of comfort to the space.” “Introducing a subtle neutral, such as Dulux Purri Sticks, schemed alongside a moody blue, can change the feel of your space and can create a very sedate and tranquil atmosphere.”
Page 20 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1252 Wednesday, May 27, 2015
“Think about the overall ambience you want and do not think of colour as flat,” says Edwards. “In-between spaces such as corridors and circulation spaces between rooms are often overlooked. They act as transition spaces and can add delight, linking spaces in the home.” Dulux colour experts study trends around the world to develop their forecast, attending trade fairs in Europe, studying product and design innovation, colour and finishes, and emerging global designers. They source information from overseas agencies, which analyse global influences such as fashion, media, world events, technology and science, social fundamentals, financial economics and politics.

SAM decision a big boost for Shepparton GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW SAM… After an overwhelming response in support of the SAM Business Case, Greater Shepparton City Council have given the project the green light, with plans accepted for the new SAM to be built on the shores of Victoria Park Lake. Photo: Supplied
SOME comments captured through the feedback process saw members of the community put their thoughts across on the Business Case including being ‘excited by the possibility,’ being ‘the right time and project to progress region in the future,’ wanting ‘the project to proceed but don’t favour location’ and some seeing the project ‘as detracting from more needy projects or as a waste of money.’ During the feedback period 27 formal letters of support were received for the Business Case and 6 formal letters not in support of the Business Case were received. Funding for the $34.5M project will be sourced from a $10M contribution by Greater Shepparton City Council, $4.5M and a further $8M to support future operational costs invested by the SAM Foundation as well as an attempt to gain $10M from the State Government and $10M from the Federal Government. Preparations will now commence to progress the new SAM project including working on the architectural design, compiling construction plans, obtaining planning and building permits, upgrading the Victoria Park Lake Master Plan, creating project timelines and milestones and working on the governance model and transition from the current SAM to the new SAM.
Friends of SAM Vice President, Megan Walker said, “We’re very pleased with the decision and saw such an overwhelming response from the community and councillors in support the proposal. This really is a positive step for council to take. “We’re now looking forward to the next steps and there is quite a lot of work to be done. “The friends group want to do what we can to support SAM throughout the planning and will be assisting the SAM Foundation in raising the funds needed for the project. “We’re over the moon, it’s been talked about for many years and I think people are starting to think about the opportunities that now lay ahead. “We’re looking forward to the architectural competition for the building design, which we expect to be one of the earlier parts of the process to be carried out. “This decision by council means that the idea of an artistic community hub will start to generate a lot of thinking and imagination in the community. “We feel that, because of the mounting interest and excitement, a new SAM will help to draw more people from the community to take an interest in the arts.”
$5.6M rail line works underway SIXTY kilometres of sleepers along the Shepparton-Nagambie rail lines have begun being replaced as part of a $5.6M maintenance project being carried out on the Seymour-Shepparton rail line. The works, which include the replacement of 17,000 timber sleepers and resurfacing of 17 level crossings will be carried out in four 10-day blocks over the next two months. Up to four off-peak services a day between Shepparton and Seymour will be replaced by coaches during the 10-day blocks, while works are carried out. Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes said, “These works will improve the line, making trains more reliable and local communities safer. “The Andrews Labor Government will also develop Victoria’s first Regional Network Development Plan (RNDP). “The RNDP will set out the long-term priorities for services to the north east and across the regional network. “It will consider the best ways to expand capacity, extend the network and improve coordination between trains and buses – critical elements in a better public transport system for regional Victoria. “Communities in northern Victoria, including Shepparton, will be consulted as part of the development of the Regional Network Development Plan, with consultation to kick off in the coming months. “I expect the community consultations to start shortly and play a critical role in the development of the Plan for Northern Victoria.” For travel updates or for customers with special needs, call 1800 800 007 (6am-midnight). news HAPPY BIRTHDAY BeLLe… A very special birthday is but days away, with former teacher and local resident, Belle Mason (Erskine) turning 90 this Friday. Belle, can be seen in the photo on the left as she was in 1946, while teaching at Fryers Street State School. Belle taught many Shepparton students and at other schools including Gowrie Street Primary School in 195354 and Bourchier Street Primary School in 1969, finishing her teaching career as a librarian at Gowrie Street Primary School before retiring in March 1984. In the photo on the right, Belle was snapped during a school reunion in 2013. Some students have fond recollections of Belle, with Marlene Kuhn saying she remembers Miss Erskine in Grade 1 being so nice and kind. In 1948, Marlene recalls an announcement that Miss Erskine was now to be called Mrs Mason. Marlene said, “All I remember about Belle Mason were happy memories. I had all happy days at school all because of lovely teachers.”

Colon Cancer
A simple test could save your life WITH one death caused by colon cancer in Australia every two hours, Australian Rotary Health is urging everyone over the age of 40 should have a bowel scan regularly. Helping to promote the tests for this disease, Rotary Bowelscan kits will be made available at local pharmacies for $10 until the end of this month and then won’t be available thereafter, with most pharmacies across Shepparton and Mooroopna doing their part in support of this year’s Bowelscan program. The program is aimed at building community awareness of the disease and provides a means of intercepting it as early as possible, which often means the difference between surviving or not. Shepparton Pharmacist, John Anderson said the test isn’t difficult and is done in the privacy of one’s own home. “Early detection of this disease will mean a complete recovery for most so that’s why these tests are so valuable.” Tests shou ld be ret u r ned to t he pharmacy of purchase to be sent away for analysis no later than mid-June.

Sled dog championships to slide through Shepparton MORE then 600 sled dogs and 200 competitors will converge on Moira Park Scout Camp, Kialla West next month to compete in the 2015 Australian Sleddog Sports Association (ASSA) National Championships. Hosted by the Northern Victorian Sleddog Club (NVSDC) on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, June 6 to 8 the classic, as the annual NVSDC race is known, has a strong history in Australian sled dog racing and is the largest and longest running sled dog race in Australasia, attracting entries from Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Canberra, Victoria and Tasmania. With three days of racing, over two mornings and one evening, spectators won’t be able avoid the thrill and excitement that comes from the competitors and their dog teams as they head out to race. Teams will compete for national titles in 8,6,4,3,2,1 and Junior dog classes and a range of speciality races such as canicross, bikejoring, veterans, and pee wee events for the real young mushers. ASSA President, Darren Scragg said, “The ASSA National Championship race is the biggest event in the sled dog calendar year in this country. It has an important dual purpose of providing competitors with a major title to aspire to as well as allow a club to showcase the sport to the general public. “It is fantastic to see that one of the original homes of open, dry land sled dog races is hosting the race in 2015. This year, the Classic will also be hosting Australia’s only current Iditarod Competitor, Christian Turner, who has returned to Australia after participating in this year’s 1,600km race through Alaska, coming 15th with a team borrowed from three time Iditarod winner,

Dallas Seavey. Christian, 26, said, “I have thought about the Iditarod since the first day I stood on the runners in Banff National Park.” Racing starts on Saturday from 3:30pm to 8pm and continues on Sunday and Monday from 7am to 10am.
Geelong takes interleague glory GVFL BEATEN… The Goulbrun Valley Football League was beaten by the Geelong Football Netball Team during the weekend’s AFL Victoria Country Championships match. Photo: Supplied.
IT was a close game during the weekend’s AFL Victoria Country Championships match, but the Geelong Football Netball League (GFNL) proved too strong for the local Goulburn Valley Football League (GVFL), taking the win 12.30-102 to 9.13-67. GFNL took the lead early, with the trend continuing throughout the match, but hope shone through at half time, with the GVFL leading by 14 points but the success was short lived, with the team only scoring two more goals for the rest of the game. At three quarter time, GFNL had taken the lead by 17 points and in true fashion took the game by 35 points at the final siren, taking the title of top ranking side in country Victoria for the third year in a row.
GVFL has now dropped back to third in the AFL Victoria Country Championships. GOALS GFNL : Brandon Howarth 3, Jason Davenport 2, Jacob McGuane 2, James Linton 1, Jai Thompson 1, Daniel Lovick 1, Darcy Fort 1, Mathew Hebbard 1 GVFL : Nicholas Warnock 2, Nathan Gilliland 1, Nicholas Gray 1, Justin Sherman 1, William Martiniello 1, Quade Johnstone 1, Liam Ogden 1, Steven Stroobants 1
Kitch to coach junior Bulls HAVING only begun to field its first junior under 18 team this year, the Shepparton Rugby Union Club Inc. is charging ahead after the appointment of a new Junior Head Coach, Kitchener Robertson (Kitch). Kitch has a strong background in working with young adults through being employed with rehabilitation centres in Sydney and working for Teen Challenge as a caseworker and counsellor in Kyabram. Kitch’s devoted wife, Phyllis said, “Kitch has always found his niche working with young adults from all
different ethnic groups - a son of a preacher he found himself working in Kings Cross, Sydney for all the wrong reasons and understands how difficult life can be for teens today and through the efforts of good samaritans who came to his aide during that challenging season, now believes that it is his mandate to help others in his reach. “Kitch has encouraged the kids and I, coined the ‘three amigos,’ to be involved in community events and is excited to be bringing his skills and life experiences to the rugby field.”

GOTAFE GVFL Round 7 By Kyle Power SHEPPARTON v SEYMOUR THIS game shapes up as a must win for the Seymour Lions as they are kept out of the top six by 14.34 percent with equal points to Benalla in sixth, the Lions were big 72 point winners in their Round 6 clash against Tatura with Saad Saad getting back into some form with 4 goals. Hugh Robertson (Seymour) coming off a fine performance in the interleague game last weekend will be a key player in Bears Coach, Brad Campbell’s thoughts heading into this match. Brett Meredith whose stellar season continues will get plenty of ball with his clearance work first class, Jack Murphy and Kyle Winter-Irving are up and coming young stars for this inconsistent Seymour outfit. Shepparton’s confidence will be sky high after a comprehensive first win for season 2015 in their game against Echuca in Round 6, the Bears on their home track this Saturday will look at this as a ‘can win’ game. Ted Lindon and Daniel Willis will be good targets up forward however I suspect that Lindon might get the job down back on spearhead Saad Saad. Shepparton’s leaders have stood up this year in Rhys O’Sullivan, Nick Allan, Rowan Hiscock but they’ll need more from Rokahr, Sangster, Holland if they are to get the chocolates against the Lions. KYABRAM v MANSFIELD WITH Kyabram’s forward line in full swing headlined by superboot Billy Burstin kicking 22 goals in 3 games and with support from Nick Coulstock the Bombers will look to continue to sit pretty in the top echelon of the ladder after this game. Jason Morgan who was a late out last weekend for interleague looks set to return to the Bombers defense who are ranked number 1. The area for concern at the Eagles would be how are they going to kick a winning score ranking 11th in the competition for points with Burbury, Fagan, Boshevski leading their goal kicking. Justin Sherman is starting to find his feet in the GOTAFE GVFL and his speed and endurance is troubling opposing sides. Jordan Williams who had a quite interleague game will be dangerous in stoppages. Kyabram with their class and polish around the ball are always hard to beat at home and for Simon Dolling and co, the Eagles travelling 160kms across the country will want to take home the ‘W’. Expect a dominate display from the Bombers. SHEPPARTON SWANS v ROCHESTER THE Shepparton Swans will be out to claim a big
scalp and for the challengers to take notice of the reigning premier who tackle a white hot Rochester on their home deck Princess Park. The Swans have a great record at home and will be looking to the league leading goal kicker Justin Maddern, whose 32 goals at average of 5 per game and is on track for an 80 - 90 goal season which gives the Swans a great target. The next best goalkicker is Kaiden Antonowicz with 13 but has mainly played on a wing this season. Quade Johnstone’s star is rising with a solid start to the year and along with Preece, Sidebottom, Overs and Childs, the Swans pose a united midfield division. Ryan Keys looks to be another find for the Swans and if played their way and aren’t negated to chasing the opposition, could knock off the undefeated Tigers. Rochester are the surprise packet and new flag favourites for the year with their current standing on the ladder and being undefeated with a healthy percentage of 153.98 and ranked number 1 in attack. With players of the quality of Watson, Anderson, Perry, Stroobants and the leadership of playing Coach, James Flaherty they are going to have to be at their best to win this game. They’re not the outright favourite for premiership, but the Tigers could very well be come 5pm Saturday. BENALLA v SHEPPARTON UNITED THE once premiership favourite Benalla host the Dees in a game that sees Benalla chasing a much needed win. The Saints have lost 3 out 4 games heading into this one and will look at United to break the hoodoo. Injuries are hurting the Saints in recent weeks and it doesn’t get any better with Jake Pallpratt badly injuring his knee last weekend which by reports is season ending. Lockie Smith and Coach, Luke Morgan remain in some doubt with both missing Interleague duties. Sam Martyn, James Martyn and Will Martiniello are having fine seasons so expect the Saints to come out firing. Shepparton United have been a little disappointing in the early part of this season with Coach, Tim Looby giving the playing group a few home truths, they currently sit eighth on the ladder and look a fair way off the top teams. Ryan Butler, Matt Di Bella, and a new breed of Dees in Tim Karolidis and Jordan Gattuso who will be getting amongst the best when up against Kyabram. Shane Neaves continues to be a hard worker in the ruck and Coach, Looby is a consistent star of the comp with his versatility. United need to be on their game here with Benalla looking to patch up some cracks that seem to appearing.
