Accommodating your pets

A new home experience like no other
Pet entrances come in all shapes and sizes and can be installed in both sliding and standard doors as well as windows. Providing your pet with an easy way to enter and exit your home is important - just as important perhaps, is limiting their access when they’re sporting muddy paws or lovingly bringing you (an unwanted) token of their love, so it’s always best to choose a lockable option. You may also want to install a pet gate in the kitchen to avoid accidents or potential disasters. Hard wearing, durable flooring options
are also a worthy consideration in high pet traffic areas. Opt for surfaces like non gloss ceramic tiles, slate and hardwood that are resistant to scratches and dents and limit carpeted spaces to non-pet areas where possible. Another important thing to consider is your walls, often overlooked but easily damaged, walls are easiest to clean when finished in a satin or semi-gloss paint.
Try these helpful hints to maintain harmony with guests and pets: • Consider hiring some cleaning help to keep on top of loose fur and maintain hygiene • Invest in pet furniture and train your pet to enjoy their allocated space • Have a bit of fun and coordinate pet furniture to suit your colour scheme • Train your pets to respect your boundaries and stay off human furniture • Keep your pets well groomed • Diffusers or air purifiers are a must have

Summer garden management THE typically hot, dry and often harsh summer conditions can create many challenges for the garden enthusiast, so it makes good sense to be prepared if you want to see your garden withstand the season ahead. Dividing your time and maintenance efforts between your lawn and garden beds is critical. For healthy, resilient lawns during the warmer months and particularly when water is scarce, it is best to mow as high as your mower permits. Contrary to popular belief, cutting lawns on a low setting does not reduce the frequency of mowing, and can actually do more damage to lawns. Maintaining a longer length will help to protect lawns from unattractive and often hard to repair scalping. You can also help keep your lawn lush by foliar feeding with seaweed tonic once a month and applying one handful of poultry manure per per square metre pre-season, before rainfall or irrigation. In garden beds, try adding a layer of mulch to reduce moisture loss from soil; this will also save you time on weeding. Generally, you need a layer around 50-75mm deep, however 50mm in native gardens will suffice, just be mindful that if the mulch is too thick, rain won’t always make it down to the soil. In addition to mulching, try watering less frequently and more deeply once or twice a week.

Style trends this summer WITH summer just around the corner, it’s a time of renewed energy, inspiring ideas and fresh holiday vibes. So why not harness some of this energy and use it to revamp your home with some practical, on-trend, summer interior know-how? Not unlike previous years, this summer, it’s all about Boho. The style is casual, chilled and inviting, neutral rooms with mood making bohemian accents and Moroccan-inspired statement pieces. Use the Boho theme to create a relaxed vibe in any room of your home. For simple, yet effective results, use plants, woven textiles and bright splashes of vibrant colours. Woven baskets look beautiful in the corner of a room, while multicoloured Moroccanstyle cushions and throws will add a blast of fresh colour. Try bringing a few flowering pots inside and placing them in key locations, use them to bring life to a dull corner, stark wall, or benchtop. Aim to keep several pots in your rotation and remember to rotate them between inside and outside every few days to keep them looking their best.

MIX A PALETTE OF COLOURS... Gardens are about the many shades of colour nature provides. Photo Steve Hutcheson
Garden design by colour W
HETHER you’re designing a garden for your new home or from scratch, looking to give your existing garden a revamp, or you’re just keen to learn about how garden design works; there’s some basic fundamentals that are worth noting. The architectural style of the home and existing garden, or preferred garden spaces can provide both parameters and inspiration for your design. The colours used in the building materials of the house, paths, steps, walls and fence can be used as your starting point, with a view to design your garden’s colours to compliment . By treating the property’s structural colours as you
would the paint on your walls and the plants in your garden as your interior furnishings and decor, you might start to get a sense of your personal garden style. The colour wheel, composed of half hot or warm colours and the other half cold or cool colours, usefully demonstrates the differences between (planting) harmonious and contrasting colours and tones. A successful garden design, in addition to displaying complementary colours, group plants together with the considerations of their required growing conditions, timing of flowering and horticultural compatibility. The availability of light is also evaluated, at various times throughout the day, in different areas and through the different seasons.

Grow your edibles in limited space NOW’S THE TIME TO BUY... The Federal Government is making it easier to buy a home with first home buyers only need five percent of the deposit. Photo: Danielle Cox.
Taking the plunge into first home F
or many young people, the prospect of getting into a home of their own seems like an impossible dream. However, with the recent government initiative, the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme, getting into a first home in the Shepparton region may become a lot easier and a lot sooner. According to recent property market reports, there
are almost three times the number of homes available for sale than there are rental homes in the Shepparton region. With the current median price in the region of $280,000, first home buyers should be looking to put together a deposit around $14,000 to $20,000 dollars and then be in a position to manage the mortgage payments to get into an average home. Real Estate Institute of Victoria CEO, Gil King said Sunday’s announcement had created a lot of excitement across Victoria’s real estate sector. “The expanded First Home Buyers scheme which comes into effect in January 2020, will make it a lot easier for buyers looking to get into the rapidly growing markets across Victoria.” said Gil King. Local real estate agent, Rocky Gagliardi said, “This is going to be great for the kids, so long as they can service the loans on the low interest rates as they are now. It will tend to dry up the supply of the good quality, low priced homes fairly quickly though.”
IF YOU fancy the sweet, burst of a home grown cherry tomato, the freshly picked crunch of a green bean, or believe that a cuke is the perfect ingredient to any salad; you most certainly need to be growing at home. If it’s a lack of space that’s been holding you back from producing all your favourite edibles; it’s time to shift your thinking and simply grow vertical! No matter how small your yard, you can always grow up. By growing vertical, you can incorporate all your favourite space-hungry, vine fruiting crops, like super tasty, fresh peas, squash, passionfruit and even melons. Straight up, you can structurally support your vertical garden with stakes, trellises, fences, leftover mesh or cage frames. Growing vertical vegies is also a more efficient gardening method as it saves time, makes maintenance easier and harvesting is quicker because you can see exactly where the fruits of your labour are hanging. Fungal diseases are also less likely to affect upward-bound plants thanks to improved air flow and circulation around the foliage.
