With the steadily rising cost of electricity, many Victorian households have already gone over to solar and are now considering adding a battery to supplement their solar PV system. Adding a battery will enhance your solar bill savings by being able to store solar-generated electricity for use later in the day. Households may also be able to charge the battery with electricity purchased from the grid at off-peak rates for further savings on bills, although charging from solar would remain the priority. With enough batteries and solar panels, imports from the grid can become rare events. However, the battery’s high initial cost means that these bill savings might be cancelled out for many households. An exception is where your battery cost is subsidised which is what the Victorian Government is currently doing. Drawing from batteries in the early evening reduces your demand on the grid at peak times, which could help your electricity network provider delay expensive capacity upgrades (which consumers pay for indirectly). When more households install solar panels and batteries, there is greater potential to increase our use of renewable electricity in our electricity grid. In this way, at a societal level, increasing use of household batteries can actually assist in delivering more renewable energy and benefit our environment. To find out more about the battery rebate offered by the State Government, go to their website at https:// www.solar.vic.gov.au/solar-battery-rebate.

Recycle right

HARVEST TIME... Carmel Lucas with grandson Harly Carmody, picking some goods from her Rushworth property veggie garden. Photo: Kelly Lucas

GET THE MOST FROM RECYCLABLES... According to the National Waste Report 2020, Australia generated 3.5M tonnes of plastic waste in 2018 and 2019. Unfortunately, only 13% of this number was recycled, and 84% ended up in landfills. Photo: Supplied. NATIONAL Recycling Week kicked off on Monday, November 8. Here are six tips for recycling in the home: • Never put recyclables in plastic bags. Instead, use a tub or basket to carry items to the recycling bin. • Food scraps, cardboard, shredded paper and newspapers, and more can be composted and then used in your garden as fertiliser. • Never dispose of old clothes or shoes in recycling. Donate these items if they’re still wearable, otherwise, old clothes can

be repurposed into scrap for cleaning or crafts, or disposed of in the waste bin. • You don’t need to rinse recyclables, in fact, you’ll save on water if you don’t. Instead, empty any food or liquid before placing it in the recycling bin. • Plastic bags and soft plastics can be recycled through the REDcycle Program, facilitated through participating supermarkets. Get rid of them when you go to do your weekly grocery shopping. If it’s broken, fix it! Reducing what we buy and reusing what we own already are important factors in reducing waste.

Get your gardening gloves out LOOKING for something fun and easy to do around the home that will occupy the young and old and keep the family healthy and happy at the same time? How about starting a veggie garden. It doesn’t matter if you have a balcony or a backyard, anyone can start a veggie garden and reap the rewards of being immersed in nature. Veggies generally need around six hours per day of sunlight, good soil or formulated potting mix, and adequate drainage systems both in the soil and in pots. Vegetables that are ideal for spring planting include, tomatoes, carrots, capsicums, beetroots, cucumbers, and

broad beans. Crops ready for the taking include, silverbeet, spinach, spring onion, cauliflower, and broccoli, just to name a few. There are many great aspects of having your own veggie garden, watching the vegetables grow can be quite exciting. Then, when it's time to get out and pick what is ready, it is quite satisfying. Cooking and eating what you have produced yourself though, is by far the best part.

Blast from the past with bouclé MAN CAVE ENTHUSIASTS... Send us your man cave images to inspire others. Photo: Kelly Lucas A MAN cave is like a home within a home and while every man cave is different, based on personal preferences, there are definitely a few must have items to complete the space. A man-sized couch is a good start, followed by a fridge, TV and a pool table, maybe even a dart board too. With limitless ideas these days, people really can create their own oasis. The Adviser are calling out all “man cave

enthusiasts” to put their man cave to the test. Send through a photo of your man cave to The Adviser’s Facebook or Instagram accounts, or email your images and full name to editorial@sheppartonadviser. com.au A selection of the best images will be posted online for readers, in the hope they inspire others to create their very own dream man cave.

An acreage home that has it all

POPULAR in the 40s and 50s, bouclé is back with a vengeance. Most often most seen in white and cream, the fabric itself is fuzzy in appearance, almost like a worn jumper or cardigan that’s pilling. Bouclé is both a type of fabric and a type of yarn, each characterised by small loops of material that create a fleecy, textured look and feel. Traditionally, bouclé fabric was used in window treatments like curtains, but modern homes, with their preference for sheers and/or roller blinds, avoid this approach and instead adorn pieces

like curved armchairs and sofas in it, as well as headboards and ottomans too. You can also use it in a smaller way by adding bouclé rugs, cushions, throws and bedding. You’ll most often see bouclé sofas in white or cream, and a lot of the time the sofa shapes are quite fluid. They’re curved or feature puffy arms and a deep profile. As this furniture covering increases in popularity, options at both ends of the affordability scale should increase, meaning everyone can introduce this element into their existing décor scheme.

Four interior trends for 2021

INTERIOR IDEAS... Perfectly aged, worn-out wood flooring, brick walls, and metal bars exposed from the ceiling. A warehouse feel combined with homely touches can give a very modern and stylish edge to a new build. Photo: Supplied 1. POP OF COLOUR Decorating with neutral colours is a safe, timeless, and chic way to go. On top of that, it seems as though minimalistic and monochromatic design trends won't be going anywhere anytime soon. However, just because these tame interior styles are

in vogue doesn't mean you can't experiment with bright colours and fun hues. Sometimes you may want to add just a little something to your mainly white, beige, and grey space. 2. INDUSTRIAL Perfectly aged, worn-out wood flooring, brick walls, and metal bars exposed from the ceiling. A warehouse feel combined with homely touches can give a very modern and stylish edge to a new build. Focus on various textures, raw finishes, and the appeal of a design that centres on mechanical ingenuity. The ability to combine upcycled furniture, modern furniture and eclectic pieces you have collected means you have free reign with your decorating choices. 3. FARMHOUSE Modern farmhouse décor has really taken to the forefront recently and being situated in the Goulburn Valley means this particular style suits our lifestyle perfectly. Forget the farmhouse décor you may associate with Nan and Pop’s farm in the 90s, despite its charm. The new take on farmhouse chic means there isn’t a brown or terracotta floor tile in sight. 4. WARM-TONED METAL Warm metals like rose gold, copper and brass are going to be big news for fixtures in the bathroom and kitchen. Not only are they a nice break from silver and matte black, they have inherent antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities held by copper and brass.

Bee the envy of your neigh buzz with these plants

THE BEE’S KNEES... Colourful flowers and attractive scents will keep bees visiting your yard for years, which will keep your plants in great condition and the ecosystem thriving. Photo: Deanne Jeffers YOU may not notice them buzzing around you, but bees make a crucial part of your garden’s ecosystem. Without them, fruit and vegetable production would be compromised, and many flowering plants we love would cease to exist. Bees do the brunt of the work in pollinating, which is why planting flowers that attract bees is so important. More bees mean a happier garden and a healthier world. Bees are attracted to colourful, fragrant flowers. Bright colours and a wafting scent of perfumed petals grab their attention and tell them there is food nearby. The rich scent and bright yellow flowers

found on the native frangipani, currently in full bloom locally, produces creamy flowers with a strong fragrance that bees cannot resist. Callistemons, popularly known as the Bottlebrush, throw off flowers in pinks, reds and purple. They provide food and shelter for bees, as well as native birds, animals, insects and skinks – they will attract plenty of wildlife to your backyard. Daisies, eucalyptus trees, grevillea, pigface, and nasturtiums are alternative flowers that bees go crazy for. Any good nursery will be able to help you find the right plants for attracting bees that suit your garden and gardening needs.
