The acting team manager for Ambulance Victoria at the Shepparton branch is Sarah Jones. At just seven years of age, Sarah was involved in a serious accident, and the paramedics that saved her life inspired her towards the health industry, which she has now been a part of for fifteen years. “Don't be afraid to speak up and ask for help. Never hold back on your dreams, give them a go,” said Sarah. Sargent Sharyn Lloyd and Sargent Jasmine Gregor have both been in the police force for over 20 years.

INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN IN EMERGENCY SERVICES...

Eight years ago, Nacole Standfield was introduced to Shepparton Search and Rescue through friends. She was interested in helping the community and she is now the first female Search and Rescue president in 50 years. “I have seen a lot of change over the years, more so recently with an influx of women coming forward to be a part of what we do. It is great. There is plenty of room for women in this line of work. Some parts of the job are not for everyone, but there is always a way to help,” said Nacole.

The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another, so enjoy this edition of The Adviser’s ‘Inspirational Women in Business Feature’ where you will be taken into the lives of many astounding women within our region. be a part of the change

Pictured from left, Ambulance Victoria’s Shepparton acting team manager Sarah Jones, Shepparton Search and Rescue president Nacole Standfield with Sargent Sharyn Lloyd and Sargent Jasmine Gregor from the Shepparton Police Force.

Both stated that the opportunity to help other people and really try to help them is what drives their passion for what they do in the community, and for the community. “Every day I have an opportunity to change people’s lives. I do not feel like I am inspirational in any way but if I can inspire others to do better, then I am helping people and I am doing my job right,” said Sharyn. Jasmine’s message was precise. “It is time to take the gender out of it and be a part of the change.”

ARCHANA Deo has worked in the pharmacy profession since 2009 after graduating with a Bachelor of Medical Science.

“We have over 25 employees between both pharmacies, 23 who are females,” said Archana. Archana balances her role as General Manager of these successful businesses with raising a family, one of her proudest achievements in addition to her education. “In the past, raising kids has predominantly been a mother’s

In 2018, they took the challenge even further and bought Shepparton Amcal Pharmacy (previously known as John Anderson Pharmacy).

“Being born and raised in a family with a business background, running my own business has always been my ambition,” reflected Archana. “Owning two successful businesses demands great responsibility and I find myself immersed and working more behind the scenes these days than on the shop floor.

“I believe leadership is to help one another lead, appreciate each other’s point of view and move forward together as a team. At work I love asking staff for their opinions and suggestions, then I collate these ideas and implement them, and this helps us all to improve.”

Archana and Melvin believe in empowering their staff and provide ongoing training, and recently organised a motivational speaker to help navigate the team around the retail pharmacy industry.

Archana and her husband, Melvin, always had ambitions to one day own a pharmacy, and in 2013 they purchased Chemist Discount Centre (previously Priceline Marketplace).

‘A holistic and tailored approach to Dermatological practices.’

Skin Checks General Dermatology

Dr Rudd initially consulted privately and visited Rumbalara, working closely with the local indigenous community. Now Dr Rudd consults monthly from GV Skin and Specialist Centre at 20 Wyndham Street, Shepparton, alongside other professional female colleagues such as plastic surgeon, Dr Sophie Ricketts. She has also now expanded her services to the Wangaratta region.

AS a new consultant dermatologist 9 years ago, Dr Alice Rudd offered tele-health dermatology consultations to the Shepparton community via local GP’s. As time went on, Alice recognised that to effectively service the dermatologic needs of her patients in this region, she needed to visit Shepparton and see patients face-to-face.

SKIN SOLUTIONS... Dr Alice Rudd provides a holistic and tailored approach to her patients care, offering general dermatology management of psoriasis, eczema and acne as well as skin cancer and rashes.

Recently, she has had the privilege of being joined by local melanographer and registered Division 1 nurse, Alanna Adams, who is helping facilitate the delivery of dermatologic care to patients here in the Goulburn Valley.

“I am thrilled to be working alongside such a knowledgable and experienced specialist like Dr Rudd. It is imperative the Shepparton community has access to high-quality specialist care which negates the need to travel to Melbourne,” said Alanna.

Gender has nothing over experience. Megan, and other women in the industry, have a special superpower though. Research into how genders see colour shows several differences, with female respondents showing they are more adept at distinguishing between subtle gradations then men.

STARTING her career in the paint industry as a delivery driver at age 23, Darby’s Paints Shepparton manager, Megan Brown, has seen expectations rapidly change.

From minor paint repairs to full restoration of your beloved vehicle, Darby’s Paints are your partner in refinishing needs. Head into Darby’s Paints, located at 12 Campbell Street, Shepparton. Call 5821 0111 or visit www.darbyspaints.com.au/ more. Street,

“This wasn’t something I pictured myself doing, but I really enjoy it. I enjoy the banter with the regulars. I think if you were someone who took yourself too seriously, you wouldn’t last too long in a trade, guy or girl,” says Megan.

“A long time ago, even though I’d been at the Geelong site for several years, we would still get that older generation of men that would look past you for a male. They’d blatantly say, ‘Is there a guy who can serve me?’” recalls Megan. “Our boss has always fiercely defended us girls. He’d come out and tell them, ‘Well, ask her a question. If she doesn’t know the answer, she’ll get you the answer.”

“Any feedback I get about female painters is that they’re quite often the best in the bunch. I think that comes down to attention to detail and girls being fussier, but it works and they generally nail it!”

Harmoniously effusive about their workplace, the highly qualified staff bring many years of experience, but it is the joy of camaraderie that resonates.

STEPPING into Reid’s pharmacy you are, without exception, greeted by warm, affable staff who are genuinely interested in providing personalised, holistic care. More than exceptional customer service, the all-female team of health professionals present as a united front, passionate about getting to know you and your health requirements in order to deliver comprehensive care. Knowing that exemplary customer care starts with a happy and supportive team, business owners and pharmacists, Kate Boswell and Leticia Keady state, “We want to help people. We want to have an impact on our customer’s (and employees) lives, so we really put an emphasis on knowing them because when you know them, you care for them.”

The theme of family also encompasses the youngest member of the team, Sienna Tsorbaris, who aptly states, “I love it! I look up to all the staff, because I am the youngest. They have all helped me out so much in my study and in my role, they’re like my second family.”

“Our motto is, ‘teamwork is dreamwork,’” enthuses retail manager, Leah Dore before adding, “We thrive on giving that extra TLC, I feel like we’ve got that down pat.”

“I have never met another female estimator before. It’s such an interesting role, every day is different and every day I am quoting something new,” said Kate. “I’m definitely met with surprise when new clients ask to speak with me, they are likely expecting a male. I love my job however and have been doing it for a number of years, so any initial hesitation quickly dissipates once start working through their enquiry.”

Kasey Sullivan is a second-year apprentice metal fabrication worker and is about to enter a state competition where she has six hours to create a model of a sand roller. Metal work has been a passion of Kasey’s ever since school, and she’s always been a practical learner who enjoys hands-on work. “My mum is a registered builder, so I always thought I’d pursue a career in that or metal work. I enjoy the creative aspects of my job and encourage any other young women who have a passion in something, even if it’s in a male dominated industry, to give it a crack.” Sharon Law has made a career change in addition to running her own metal work business, Toolamba Metal Works. Currently she is working in the Feedtech division of Trevaskis assembling livestock feeders. “I’ve just turned 57 and have been with Trevaskis Engineering for only a few weeks. I am so grateful that they gave me a chance to change my career path at this stage of my life. You’re never too old to try something new,” said Sharon.

Kate Gow is about to celebrate her 20th year with Trevaskis Engineering. Initially beginning her career as a receptionist, Kate is now an Engineering estimator, and has been doing so for the last eight years.

ENGINEERING and metal fabrication are undoubtedly male-dominated industries. Local metal fabrication firm, Trevaskis Engineering, is proving however that gender has no influence on one’s ability to forge a career in any industry and achieve great success. Several team members, all undertaking differing roles, detail how Trevaskis Engineering is a supportive and inclusive environment which fosters career development for all.

In addition to exemplary client service, Hailey Wright, property management assistant and Tara Seach, administration officer, acknowledge mentorship and camaraderie as being beneficial to the allfemale team, as Hailey states, “It’s a very supportive environment, we’re always there for each other,” while Tara concludes, “I definitely feel mentored...It’s good to wake up in the morning and know that you’re coming here to a good team.”

I love the nurturing side of my job.”

For property manager, Rebecca Baker, the unique quality of the team brings not only requisite respect for all clients but timely empathy, as she says, “We look after both our tenants and our landlords with respect... Two generations

FOUR GENERATIONS OF MANCHESTER…FINNY’S Strong family bonds are the backbone of Finny’s Manchester and a key to their great success. Pictured from back is Zoe Sicali, Tina Sicali and in front, Anne Finn and Aileen Hendy (deceased). Photo: Steve Hutcheson.

Born out of frustration with the formality of seeking expertise from professionals in the region, Neha Samar dreamed to life The Flamingo Project, and has since connected many women through practical mentorship. By brokering introductions between professional women and those who want practical, nuanced insight into potential career paths (and/or fields of interest), the mentors and mentees have not only found success but rewarding friendships.

THE many achievements in business by local women cannot be acknowledged without mentioning Finny’s Manchester, a success story of fine service for over 33 years. Shepparton’s Finny’s Manchester is an institution that has sustained throughout the challenges of the recession ‘we had to have’ in the early 1990s, the Global Financial Crisis which began in 2007, and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. Extraordinarily, Finny’s Manchester continues to look after 100s of customers week in, week out both in Shepparton and Bendigo. What underpins their lasting success, in addition to hard work, are two generations of Finns working at the business and a formidable team of females who continue their steadfast service. Combining over 100 years of exemplary customer service are Anne Finn, with 33 years of service; Tina Sicali (Finn) with 33 years; Shirley, with 25 years' service, Tara, with 15 years' service, and Darielle, nine years' service.

Discovering an abundance of generous women in the community who are willing to share their experience and expertise, Neha says, “It’s not a bible that you can just open and say, ‘this is my solution,’ but it does give you that advantage of getting to know somebody outside your normal life- using their expertise, experience and building yourself through their eyes. It’s a two-way connection, the mentee learns and the mentor gains fresh perspective.”

In conjunction with building meaningful and productive relationships, the Flamingo Project practically assists mentees with field specific interview techniques, resume writing and developing career direction. With many women stepping forward to volunteer their time, Neha states, “It’s about looking into ourselves as women in the community and saying that I am sharing the stage with someone else.” You can find out more about this progressive initiative at https://theflamingoproject.com.au/

GREAT news for women’s health was recently announced by the Victorian Government. Shepparton is to receive a new sexual and reproductive healthcare hub, providing access to information and services on all forms of contraception, pregnancy options and sexual health. The hub will also provide a range of vital services including facilitating diagnosis and management of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), menopause and endometriosis, and promoting local access to cervical screening and Breast Screen Service. Based on current demand and availability, the new hub in Shepparton is one of three new hubs announced for the state, bringing the number in total to eleven, while new funding will also extend the operating hours and scope of services at existent hubs.

Minister for Health, Mary-Anne Thomas said, “Victorian women deserve access to quality sexual and reproductive healthcare regardless of where they live. The new hub in Shepparton, Morewell and Warrnambool is about ensuring regional women can get the care they need close to home.”

BUILDING THROUGH THEIR EYES
