GIFT GUIDE & COMPETITION SUNDAY 13 MAY 2018

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart By Nicholise Garner TA K I NG time out to read a book is something I consider a real pleasure and frankly, with six children at home, it’s a luxury! For me, reading is an opportunity

to lose myself for a period of time, an opportunity for silence and to be lead into a journey from the comfort of my home. Recently I was lucky enough to meet with author, Holly Ringland during her visit to Collin’s Booksellers in Shepparton. I was struck by Holly’s brimming smile, her down to earth nature and pure likeability. Holly’s recently released debut book ‘The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart’ has already been receiving great reviews which is no surprise to me as it’s such an enchanting story. Beautifully written and set in Australia, this book takes the reader on a sometimes difficult journey through a young girl’s life, examining bonds between women and family, the most subtle forms of communication, love, betrayal and life’s purpose. It’s an earthy and heart touching story that will have the reader looking at our native flowers with new meaning. Do mum a favour and get her an autographed copy of Holly Ringland’s ‘The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart’ from Collin’s Booksellers. Visit Collins Booksellers at 262 Maude Street, Shepparton.

Mother’s Day heart fingerprint tree What you need: • Two sheets of white paper • Ink pads – reds and pinks (you can also use finger paints) • Black marker • Scissors • Pencil (optional) Method: First we need to make a heart stencil. The easiest way to go about it (in our honest opinion) is to fold a sheet of paper in half and draw a half-heart shape. You can easily cut the heart out then, just by cutting along the line. Place the sheet of paper with the heart outline on top of a regular sheet of white paper. For younger kids you can secure it with some tape so it won’t move around while they get creative. With a black marker, draw a tree within the heart shape. Now it is time to get messy with your

fingers. Dab your fingers (thumbs and fingertips to get different shapes) in the ink pads and ‘stamp’ them all over the heart shape. Do this until you are happy with how thick the leaves on the tree are. Remove the sheet of paper with the heart outline. Draw the rest of the tree trunk, if necessary.
