WITH Mother's Day just around the corner, Focus Cards and Gifts have a fantastic range of beautiful cards for your mum, wife or grandmother, in many different designs and categories.

“This year we have added cards for daughters and daughters-in-law to our range,” said store co-owner Shelley Culhane.

“We have a specially selected range of great giftware priced from $5.95 with something for every mum, whether they enjoy fashion, cooking or hobbies such as puzzles to relax with.”

The range of Willow Tree figurines is extensive, including several new designs, and there are many other great gift ideas in store, along with great service.

There is a range of instant scratch-it gift packs in store, the perfect gift. If wrapping is not your strong point, they have an impressive range of gift bags and wrapping, or we

can wrap your gift for you.

The friendly staff at Focus Cards and Gifts are happy to help with your selection to make sure you get the right gift to spoil your Mum.

Call in to Focus Cards and Gifts, Fryers Street end of

the new look Maude Street Mall, your one-stop-shop for Mother's Day, open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, Saturdays 8.30am to 4.00pm and 10am to 2pm on Sundays.

Store owners Shelley and Peter, along with staff, would like to wish every Mum a very special Mother's Day.

YOU’VE found the perfect Mother’s Day gift and written a thoughtful message in her card, but perhaps the most important gift one can give on Mother’s Day is quality time. Here are some lowcost activities you can try with Mum this year:

Plant a garden together – growing a garden is a gift that keeps on giving, and the memories you make planting seedlings and tending to plants together, and sharing the bounty, is one that you will cherish forever.

Cook a family recipe or create one of your own – delve into the old family cookbook and select a dish you can prepare and enjoy together. If your mum is known for their exceptional kitchen skills, this is an excellent opportunity to learn cooking from her and preserve it for future generations.

Visit a gallery or museum – explore the

world of arts and culture and spend the day in a gallery or museum. While you are there, you can pick out your favourite pieces and discuss these to get to know each other’s special tastes and enjoy a coffee or a bite to eat.

Have spa day at home – the day spa can be expensive, but you can treat mum to a special pampering day from your home by making DIY face masks (or buying some in store) and giving each other mani-pedis.

Go walking, hiking or bike riding – enjoy the beautiful fresh autumn weather by getting outdoors for a leisurely stroll, bike ride or longer hike with mum. Do not forget sunscreen, water and suitable shoes and clothes for walking. There are heaps of biking or walking routes around Greater Shepparton to explore that are suitable for all types of abilities.

Register to run and save lives

AUSTRALIA’S biggest fun run and walk for breast cancer research, the Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic (MDC), has announced more than 70 locations nationwide where participants can celebrate, honour and raise vital funds for those impacted by breast cancer. Local events will run in Girgarre, Shepparton and for the first time, in Seymour as well.

"We are excited to announce that in 2023, the 26th year of the MDC, there will be 73 locations in major cities, metro areas and regional towns for Australians to unite nationally in support of breast cancer research,” said MDC CEO, Zara Lawless.

“And we’re thrilled to reveal there are almost 20 locations that are either joining the Mother’s Day Classic nationwide community for the first time, or re-joining us after taking a break through the disruption the last few years.”

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in Australia and sadly, nine Australians die from it every single day. Proceeds go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to fund research to improve outcomes for those affected by breast cancer.

“Over 1.5 million people have participated in the Mother’s Day Classic for breast cancer research in the past 25 years, donating $41.5 millions, and each year we are building on the success of the event,” said Ms Lawless.

The MDC supports the NBCF’s goal of zero deaths from breast cancer. Together we can improve the lives of the 57 Australians diagnosed with breast cancer each day, now and into the future. Visit mothersdayclassic.com.au for more information or to register.

IDEAS FOR MUM... Mother’s Day gifts don’t have to be extravagant or expensive. A hand-made gift is often the perfect present for your mum or the mother figure in your life.

Photo: Supplied

Gifts from the heart

MOTHER’S Day gifts don’t have to be extravagant or expensive, especially given the cost of living. A hand-made gift is often the perfect present for your mum or the mother figure in your life. Here are some ideas that don’t cost a bomb:

Brownie/Cookie Jar

Fill a nice mason jar layer by layer with the dry ingredients for a brownie or cookie, write the recipe on a piece of paper and use twine to tie it to the neck of the jar. Mum will just have to add oil and eggs, and adding on a cute new wooden spoon to the gift is even better, you can never have too many.

Guided bushwalk

Taking mum on a nice bushwalk is a lovely and free gift idea. Use Google maps to find a route local to you and even look up some bird varieties and information about native plants so you can give mum some background information as you walk.

Handprints on canvas/tote bag

While lovely hand drawn pictures are always welcome, one sweet way to capture a moment in time is by simply getting everyone in your family to put a handprint on canvas so you can all look back and marvel at how little everyone’s hands were. Simply get everyone to dip their hand palm side down into a different colour of paint, press onto canvas, or a tote bag with fabric paint, leave to dry and voila!

Bookmark

DIY bookmarks are super easy to make. Cut a length of cardboard and then a piece of paper to stick on top the same size or slightly smaller so the cardboard creates a border. Decorate as you wish, a few lovely family photos cut out and stuck on will be very much appreciated, make sure of course they are photos that it’s okay to cut up first, printing them onto printer paper is even better as it ensures they will be easier to stick.

Mum’s the word

BREAKFAST in bed is a sweet gesture, flowers may be pretty and chocolate may be delicious, but they don’t last very long.

A gift that someone will have forever is a far better alternative, and jewellery is arguably the best option to leave a long-lasting impression upon the special mother figures in your life.

Prouds The Jewellers Shepparton has an extensive range of gold, silver and precious stone jewellery to select from and a Mother’s Day catalogue out now to help you narrow down your gift ideas.

They also have watches, exquisite giftware and figurines to choose from.

If you need assistance finding the perfect gift, the friendly team at Prouds The Jewellers are able to suggest some pieces which will delight your mum, nan or anyone else who you wish to celebrate with on Mother’s Day’s.

Prouds The Jewellers Shepparton is open Monday to Thursday from 9am-5.30pm, Friday from 9am-6pm and Saturday from 9am-4pm. They are located at 17 Maude Street and can be contacted on 5821 4512.

A mother loves you first, and then forever...

MOTHER’S Day, regardless of the date is celebrated around the world, and while the traditions maybe different, the sentiment is the same. Mother’s Day is the day to honour the lady who gave us life, putting her own needs behind our own, while wrapping us in unconditional love.

Being the traditional and main caregiver, most cultures set aside a special day to celebrate their mothers.

While in Australia, Mother’s Day often begins with breakfast in bed, a bouquet of flowers and homemade cards, Japanese Children present their mothers with chrysanthemums, a symbol of the sweetness and endurance of motherhood.

Awarding medals to mothers of large families after the first world war in gratitude for helping to rebuild the population, today

the traditional gift on Mother's Day is a flower-shaped cake, while in the United Kingdom, churches handout daffodils to children to give to their mums.

In India, each October, Hindus honour Durga, the goddess of mothers during a 10-day festival known as Durga Puja while in Ethiopia family flock from all over to the family home for a special meal during the Antrosht festival, which is held especially to both honour and celebrate of motherhood, following the end of the rainy season.

No matter how we acknowledge our beautiful mothers on Mother’s Day, or even if we choose to express our gratitude at other times and in other ways, it’s comforting to know that the entire world cherishes motherhood just the same.

Mother’s Day

The History of Mother’s Day in Australia

WE all know that Mother’s Day in Australia is celebrated on the second Sunday of the month in May, but how much do you know about the origin of this very special tradition?

Following the unimaginable loss and devastation of World War One, Sydney resident, Janet Heyden took to visiting elderly mothers, who had lost husbands and sons in the Great War, in hospital.

Inspired to have these women recognised for all that they had given and tragically lost; Janet placed advertisements in Syndey newspapers calling on the city to both honour and remember these women with a little something personal and special.

Responding with an abundance of soaps, lollies, hairpins, scarves and the like, people from all around the capital donated little gifts, culminating in 850 women receiving a present on Australia’s first Mother’s Day in Sydney in 1924.

Energised by the success of her Mother’s Day venture, Janet extended her talents to also proclaim the very first Father’s Day on the second Sunday of June, in 1924.

Continuing her charitable work for another seven years, Janet worked to firmly establish the tradition of Mother’s Day in Australia, where it eventually became the commercial, as well as heartfelt, tradition that it is today.

IT BEGAN IN 1924... The very first Mother’s Day in Australia was celebrated in 1924 thanks to Janet Heyden who was inspired by the elderly mothers she visited in hospital who had sacrificed so much, losing husbands and sons in the Great War.

The perfect strawberry cake for Mother’s

SOMETIMES the best way to show someone how much you care and appreciate them is to put in a little elbow grease in the kitchen to whip up a sweet treat. With juicy, fresh strawberries crusted in sugar, this sunken delight will keep mum beaming for the entire of the day.

INGREDIENTS

• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

• 1 tsp cornmeal

• 1tsp baking powder

• ¼ tsp baking soda

• 1/2 tsp salt

• ½ cup unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the pan

DIRECTIONS

• 1 cup packed light brown sugar

• 1 large egg

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

• 1/3 cup buttermilk

• 1/2 punnet small strawberries, hulled

and halved

• 2 tbsp raw sugar

• Powdered sugar, for serving

• Sliced strawberries, for serving

1. Stir together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.

2. Preheat the oven to 350°. Butter a 23cm pie tin and set it aside. Beat 1/2 cup butter and brown sugar until fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla and beat until just combined. Add half of the flour mixture, the buttermilk, then the remaining flour, beating until combined after each addition.

3. Spoon the batter into the prepared pie plate; spread in an even layer using the back of a spoon or a spatula. Scatter the berries evenly over the top of the batter; do not press them down. Sprinkle the berries and batter with 2 tablespoons turbinado sugar, if using.

4. Bake until the top is golden brown, and a wooden pick inserted into the cake (not a strawberry!) comes out clean, 40 to 45 minutes. Let cool before dusting with powdered sugar and serving with more sliced strawberries, if you like.

The gift of a beautiful scent

THE region of the brain that juggle smells, memories and emotions are very much intertwined. In fact, the way that your sense of smell is wired to your brain is unique among your senses.

Giving your mum or mother figure a gift that will remind them of you for months to come is a lovely way to remind them of your love.

Shepparton Amcal Pharmacy are your local fine fragrance experts, right the heart of the CBD, with a wealth of knowledge to help you select the perfect perfume for someone special.

Here are there top three picks for Mother’s Day:

Olympea Flora is a new intense EDP for women by Paco Rabanne. Capturing todays glamorous amazon goddess who knows all about the power of flowers. Top notes are black currant, sorbet and pink pepper; middle notes are rose and peony; base notes are vanilla, patchouli, cashmere wood and salt.

Good Girl Blush EDP by Carolina Herrera contrasts two different extractions of a sensual vanilla base with the romanticism of a peony heart, formed by two distinct

forms of exotic Ylang Ylang and upcycled rosewater. An olfactory expression of the interior universe contained in every woman, top notes are bergamot and mandarin orange; middle notes are peony, rose water and ylang-ylang; base notes are vanilla and tonka bean.

Si by Giorgio Armani EDP is a chypre fruity fragrance

Breakfast in bed,sans crumbs

BREAKFAST in bed sounds cute in theory, but being forced to eat one lone WeetBix and washing it down with a spoonful of peanut butter under the gaze of eager children who prepared said feast is not an ideal way to start your morning.

To make the meal less traumatic, there’s no harm in helping prep a little the night before or if you have a partner, getting them on board. Here’s some handy tips:

DO SOME AHEAD OF TIME

The point is to do something nice and spend time with your loved ones, so focus on that, you don't want to wake up hours in advance to have everything ready.

Bake a batch of muffins in the days before, or prep vegetables for an omelette the night before. Make the morning go even faster by picking a recipe you can make overnight.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Make it even easier by having pastries ready to go, or croissants (mind the crumbs though!).

BUY THE GOOD STUFF

This is one area where you can easily up the luxury and also save some time. Instead of supermarket pastries, purchase some from one of the wonderful local eateries we have here in town.

PLATE LIKE A PRO

A well-constructed tray is the easiest way to make breakfast in bed feel like even more of a treat. Start with wide-bottomed glasses and bowls, plates that are large enough to catch crumbs, and a full set of silverware. Then add a few well-chosen accoutrements, like a nice cloth napkin, a single flower in a water glass, and little spoons or knives for jams and butter.
