The Museum of Vehicle Evolution is complete. The final touches, a polish or two and MOVE is once more open for business. The reconstruction has taken some time due in part to COVID-19 restrictions however

it is now complete and ready to provide the region with a world class exhibition of

motor vehicles in addition to collections of fashion through the ages, bicycles, communication equipment and the Furphy Museum that reflect on the region’s history

and how transport has played a significant role in its prosperity. Beginning this week with a soft opening, visitors can now take the opportunity while the school holidays are

on to see what Shepparton has to offer in the way of world class entertainment. MOVE is located at Emerald Bank, South Shepparton and is open daily from 10am to 4pm.

WHAT IS MOVE?

SEVERAL years ago, a group of local transport identities including Lloyd Mawson, John Taig, Ken Keating, Sam Sali and Gerard Michel met with the intention of building a ‘Shepparton Transport Museum’. This group worked to set the foundations for what we have today. And that is MOVE or the Museum of Vehicle Evolution.

Our current Board shares with those original identities the idea of creating a world class attraction that not only showcases transport and its history and characters but gives visitors to the region another reason to come and stay. MOVE has enjoyed financial support from both the State and Federal Governments, but without the generous and positive support from the Greater Shepparton Council our State and Federal funding would have been much more difficult to secure. Apart from the work of the original identities it has been Jim Andreadis as the driving force behind MOVE. MOVE would have not been created to the standard that it has without the generosity of the Andreadis Family and the boundless energy of Jim. So what is MOVE? Well it is not about

rusty and dusty never-changing old exhibits. It’s a celebration of equipment that moves and the people and families that have helped this fantastic region build to what it is today. We will be constantly changing our displays and including interactive information kiosks to add to the experience. But MOVE isn’t just about cars and trucks. We have the Furphy Museum which tells the story of this local and nationally iconic family. The Loel Thomson clothing collection displaying over 10,000 items of clothing, fashions and accessories dating back to the First Fleet. MOVE is a not-for-profit charitable enterprise, and we could not have achieved what we have without the generosity of our board members past and present, our staff, volunteers and sponsors.

Congratulations

to everyone involved in this wonderful new attraction for Shepparton and our region.

A CRITICAL MASS OF OFFERINGS

IDEAS are easy, it is the execution that takes all the hard work. A dozen years ago, Shepparton businessman, Jim Andreadis had a 1250m2 tilt slab building from the former Ardmona Factory Sales in Mooroopna that needed to be stored until there was a need to reuse it. Another well-known businessman, Lloyd Mawson agreed to store it on vacant land behind Emerald Bank. Lloyd Mawson has always collected things, and another Shepparton identity Dick Clayton who worked for many years at Radio Australia also got in Jim’s ear. Those early discussions involved bringing together different collections like Dick Clayton’s radios and telephones to establish a new attraction for the region. Carmel Johnson suggested the building could be used to house the collections and a motor museum, given a motor museum, something that had been talked about amongst enthusiasts for decades. Jim and Lloyd agreed to erect the building and establish the museum at Emerald Bank,

We started pursuing more than just an expansion, we now had a vision South Shepparton, they also agreed to underwrite the project for the first three years. Shepparton Motor Museum and Collectables was soon bursting at the seams. In the interim, Jim had purchased Emerald Bank from Lloyd, and forged ahead with a 700m2 extension, including adding a mezzanine and a dedicated space to house the Furphy Museum. By 2016, the building was again becoming overcrowded.

MOVE STARTING OUT ON THE RIGHT FOOT... Providing the space for MOVE to grow, Angela and Jim Andreadis. Photo: Steve Hutcheson

With the success of the Museum, local transport legends had already started talks about establishing a truck museum. After an initial round of talks the idea was sitting on the backburner but it fitted with the need to expand again. “It was a perfect fit and it allowed us to raise the bar in terms of our ambition,” Jim said. “We started pursuing more than just an expansion, we now had a vision to create MOVE as a unique and compelling attraction for the region.” The trucking families agreed

to contribute financially to the project, but they are also a key component of the story telling at MOVE. Through the Legends project, the stories of the families that developed transport into a major industry are told and most have contributed a truck of special significance for display. The project attracted significant funding from the Australian Government, Victorian Government and Shepparton City Council. It was a trucking link that also brought one of Australia’s

most significant clothing collections to MOVE. The 10,000 items were collected over 40 years by Loel Thomson, the wife of Brian Thomson who started the first Kenworth dealership in Shepparton. The collection needed a permanent home, and MOVE stepped in, adding a dedicated climate-controlled gallery space so the collection could be on public display for the first time. Behind the scenes and with little fanfare the Andreadis family has gifted the land and buildings to MOVE, including some that attract rental income. MOVE is starting life on a sound footing and the gift from the Andreadis family will ensure it can continue to operate as a community based not-for-profit entity. “We want MOVE to help create a critical mass of offerings in Shepparton so that people from across the country will have more reason to take the time to visit and spend longer here,” Jim said. “We want the region to benefit and prosper from the visitors MOVE attracts.”

OPEN 7 DAYS 10AM TO 4PM

As proud supporters, my family and I would like to congratulate the board and everyone involved in the building of the amazing Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE). Their commitment to the Project and the end result are to be highly commended. Big enough to do the job... small enough to care!

A MESSAGE FROM

FRANK PAPALLO MY first visit to the “old” Shepparton Motor Museum left me wanting more. I was surprised that we had this hidden gem in our backyard that I had previously known little about

While I would not call myself a “car person” in the true sense, I have always had an appreciation of cars and a casual coffee with Jim Andreadis enlightened me to the history of the Museum and its potential for the region. Jim’s passion and enthusiasm was undeniable and infectious. By the end of that meeting I had become the new Finance Director of MOVE. The next three years at MOVE were an experience to say the least. As a collective we have experienced highs and lows, faced significant uncertainty and at times wondered how it might end But throughout the entire process our resolve to finish what we started and do something great for Shepparton remained the driving force that has led to the completion of our facility What we have achieved in regards to our new facility is an example of the benefits that can be realised when the private and public sectors come together with a common goal of serving the community. Of course, none of this would be possible without our various funding groups, philanthropic families, executive team and volunteers that make MOVE such a unique community organisation As we make the transition from project to reality, our challenge is building an enterprise that is sustainable for years to come. Thanks to the generous support of our

various donors, trades, volunteers and staff the upgrade is now complete. In the future we hope to add many more bells and whistles to make the museum and visitor experience as good as it can be. With the outstanding appointment of Peter Hill as executive officer, I accepted the request of the board to take the vacant role of Chair, a great privilege. I am supported by a team from board to staff and volunteers that is second to none. My goal is to ensure the viability and sustainability of the organisation now and well into the future, all while remembering and upholding the legacy of those that have been so pivotal to MOVE in the past. MOVE is not mine or yours, it belongs to the community. It’s for us, our children, our visitors and our friends. It’s an opportunity for us now an in the future to pay homage Shepparton and its unique place in Australian history. Frank Papallo MOVE Chair

A MAN FOR THE MOMENT PETER Hill has the bearing of a man in charge. Moving to Shepparton 35 years ago, reluctantly he would say, as a member of the Victoria Police, he was dismayed with the lack of lifestyle he had been used to in Melbourne, but with time, the place grew on him.

“I was young and used to a nightlife only to find Shepparton was all closed by midnight,” commented Peter. “But the people around me turned me around to see the place in a different light.” “I left the police and I had been driving trucks for a few years, initially I started my own food business then moved on to managing Fruitworks for a couple of years before I took a position with Kreskas Brothers Transport in 1997 working in an operational role. I eventually became the CEO of the company and was with them 23 years.” “In 2018, John Kreskas offered my services to help support Jim Andreadis in getting a trucking museum off the ground.” “I joined the board and resigned as chairman this month to take on the new role.” This month, Peter resigned from Kreskas to take on the position

and managing in the trucking industry, he provides the perfect candidate to take MOVE into its next phase as the construction works are completed and the museum opens with more rooms to properly display all of the exhibits. “One of the things that impressed me at the onset was the vision of the people in the transport industry here. They put their hand in their pocket and that got me motivated.

“Most of them started out as family businesses with one truck. Now, the Goulburn Valley has 25 percent of the transport vehicle registrations in the state.” Besides ensuring the museum provides a world class venue for Shepparton, Peter is making time to do the things he loves doing, cooking, music and being with his family.

A MESSAGE FROM THE

A MESSAGE FROM

VICTORIAN DAMIAN DRUM BEHALF OF THE JIM ANDREADIS GOVERNMENT ON AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT MOVE is the culmination of our biggest “hair-brained” scheme, and it couldn’t have happened without a host of people who have served on the Board of the organisation.

We have, in motoring parlance, run on the smell of an oily rag for most of our existence. We started small and have grown steadily because people have been prepared to pitch in. Past Chairs Ben Goodall and Leanne Hulm played critical roles in getting the funding to enable us to expand and create MOVE. Carrie Donaldson helped to establish the our mission and creed and was instrumental in bringing the Loel Thomson Clothing Collection to Shepparton. Over the years it has been common place to see board members cooking sausages, directing traffic at our big events or sweeping the floors. Graham Hofmeyer pitched in to erect the first building and the builder of our new home, Tony Villani, was already a fixture at the Museum, standing out the front on market days with his gold coin donation bucket. The late Ian Barker broadened our mission in the early days, helping us to embrace bicycles and motorcycles. That’s why MOVE is such a great community endeavour. It is built on the back of great passion, enthusiasm, and a willingness to do whatever it took to create a significant attraction for the benefit of the region and its many enthusiasts.

The Goulburn Valley is a region on the MOVE and the Victorian Government is delighted to have been able to play a part in the relaunch of the Museum for Vehicle Evolution.

The state-of-the-art museum highlights the Goulburn Valley’s rich transport history and significance as a leading national food bowl region. MOVE will be a key driver of regional tourism, jobs and economic strength with visitors to the Kialla attraction projected to inject $5.7M a year into the local economy. Visitors will want to stay longer, spend more and come back again and again. The 10,000-square metre museum is very much of today but celebrates a rich history with multimedia and fixed displays – and also room for fashion, jewellery and accessories dating back to 1788. The Victorian Government has provided a $900,000 grant to help bring this significant project to life and create a regional must-see experience, much like our contribution to the exciting new Shepparton Art Museum. Our commitment to MOVE is part of a $30B investment in rural and regional Victoria since 2015. It delivers on our promise to make Shepparton an even better place to live, work, visit and invest. We congratulate everyone who has worked to deliver this outstanding community asset and encourage visitors from near and far to come and experience the wonders of MOVE when it’s safe to do so.

ALMOST a year ago to the day, I stood in a vast open field at the rear of the existing Shepparton Motor Museum building. Shovel in hand, I ceremoniously threw some soil over my shoulder as part of the official “sod turning” event for the Museum of Vehicle Evolution. The day was the culmination of years of planning and hard work. Now with the official opening of MOVE upon us, the excitement and anticipation that was plentiful on that day can now rightfully be celebrated as we cut the ribbon on a showcase of the Goulburn Valley’s long history of involvement within the Australian transport sector and associated industries. I’m proud that the Federal Government was able to contribute $2.5 million to a project that will undoubtedly bolster the Goulburn Valley’s cultural tourism offering and provide numerous flow-on benefits to other businesses in the region. Like the new Shepparton Art Museum just up the road, MOVE will be a key catalyst in drawing visitors to the area, particularly as borders reopen and some normality returns post-COVID. It is an invaluable asset, and I would like to thank everyone who has donated their time, money, skills, and mementos to make this cutting-edge facility a reality.

A DESIGN THAT ACCENTUATES YEARS OF

DESIGN EXCELLENCE THE thrill of discovery underlies the design philosophy that Allister Sarris has applied in his approach to the new Museum of Vehicle Evolution in Shepparton. “It’s about not seeing everything at once, even the initial approach to a black glass door offers a new experience beyond,” said Mr Sarris. “Once past this first entry point, visitors will be greeted by curved walls and dark spaces to add impact of what lies beyond.” The exterior design takes on a minimalist approach while embracing a cubist style, aiming to evoke curiosity at each turn on one's journey through the ranging displays contained in the museum. A brief glimpse of fashion

It is more than just cars and trucks; it is an experience as you move about “It’s more than just cars and trucks, it’s an experience as you move about” architect, Allister Sarris

through the ages in the Loel Thomson display, to the rotating showcase of a vehicle on a turntable at the entry, to the curiosity aspect of a collection of old radios from bygone ages and beyond, to

cars that span generations and heavy vehicles that reflect on the region's development, to the rustic elements that encompass the Furphy

collection. Allister Sarris was first approached some years ago in a phone call leading to him being commissioned to

undertake a preliminary then final design. Throughout the re-construction he played an integral role ensuring that the design integrity was maintained and not compromised through expediency. “I wanted each visitor to move a few steps and be faced with another ‘wow’ moment as they journey through the facility. “It is more than just cars and trucks; it is an experience as you move about, from the full height banners that convey some of the history of transport in the region, to the signage that went with that, the moving pictures down to iPad terminals that will provide additional information on particular exhibits.” The new museum offers the opportunity for hours of reflection on the evolution of motoring while bringing together other features of contemporary life through the same era and Allister Sarris has painstakingly achieved that ‘wow’ sensation he wanted.

MOVING

A NATION

TRUCKING has changed the shape of Australia, bringing goods and supplies to its inner regions and bringing out its primary production.

The Goulburn Valley owes much to the ability to move perishable items such as its stone fruits quickly to their market. It was this demand that became the catalyst for a number of primary producers to transition from fruit production in creating trucking empires that now traverse the country. The Paccar Kenworth Pavilion at MOVE is the temporary home for a number of heavy vehicles owned by some of these

family companies that lend themself to the stories they have to tell. The stories are as much about the families and businesses behind them as it is about the vehicles and while there are many truck manufactures around, the Goulburn Valley has been a strong advocate for the Kenworth range over the years. In adding impact, the designer of MOVE, Allister Sarris included large banners to bring those stories to life.

Cruise Control. The Chrysler Imperial comes through again, being the first car to feature modern cruise control. The mechanism had been invented ten years earlier [by] Ralph Teetor, allegedly because he became frustrated being driven around by his lawyer who sped up and slowed down as he talked. Three Point Seatbelt Up until this time, seatbelts had been simple two-point lap straps. The threepoint model we use today was invented by Swedish engineer, Nils Bohlin. The first place in the world to legislate the use of seatbelts by all passengers was Victoria, Australia, in 1970.

1964

Intermittent Windscreen Wipers. Robert Kearns patented the type of windscreen wipers used in virtually all cars to this day. He showed his designs to General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, and none licensed it, but all proceeded to install wipers based on his designs anyway. Kearns later won patent infringement cases against both Ford and Chrysler.

1966

Portable Tapes. Ford was the first to include 8-track tape players in their 1966 models. Heated Seats The Cadillac de Ville was the first car to offer heated seats.

1970

ABS or Anti-Lock Braking. Various anti-skid mechanisms had been in use in the aviation industry before now. But it wasn’t until 1970 when Ford added the optional Suretrack system to the rear wheels of Lincoln Continentals. The next year, 1971, Chrysler introduced Sure Break to their Imperial, and General Motors introduced Trackmaster for their Cadillacs and the Oldsmobile Tornado.

1973

Catalytic Converters. Although Eugene Houdry was granted the patent for the catalytic converter in 1956, they didn’t go into production until 1973 after further development by a team of engineers at Engelhard Corporation in New Jersey, US. Airbags available to the public General Motors tested airbags on the 1973 model Chevrolet, however, that was only sold for government use. In the same year, the Oldsmobile Tornado was the first car with a passenger airbag intended for sale to the public.

Electro Gyro-cator was the first navigation system ever available in commercial cars. It did not work off GPS, but instead used a form of inertial navigation.

1984

Portable CDs. The Pioneer CDX-1 was the first CD player available for cars.

1990

Inbuilt GPS. The Mazda Eunos Cosmo was the first production car with built-in GPS navigation system.

Tesla Autopilot. Tesla’s Model S was the first commercially available

MUSEUM OF VEHICLE EVOLUTION

A FASHION SHOW FOR THE AGES SHEPPARTON and the new Museum of Vehicle Evolution (MOVE) are incredibly fortunate to become the new home of one of our nation's largest and most significant collections of Australian fashions and accessories. The famous Loel Thomson Clothing Collection, previously from Bulleen, Melbourne, features around 10,000 unique pieces that encapsulate the history of Australian everyday fashion. Each item explores social

history through evolving styles and manufacturing techniques spanning more than 200 years. It may surprise you, but the clothing collection at MOVE is more than something on offer for visitors who aren't

motorheads or car enthusiasts. This collection shares striking parallels to transportation, including the 'Duster Coat' that emerged alongside the motor car for protecting a lady's clothing from dust kicked up by vehicles, as well as driving goggles, gloves, and other retro travel wear. Fashion historian and museum consultant, Nicole Jenkins, has been assisting staff and volunteers at MOVE with the exhibition. "Shepparton should be incredibly proud to have acquired this collection, which includes many rare and valuable items including menswear from the

1940s, garments from the Great Depression and items right across history up to the 2000s." The exhibition space at

MOVE is now open to the public, offering the first chance to experience Loel's private collection of handpicked items.

A BICYCLE

MOVE will open the doors to a brand-new Museum experience and it is worth noting one particular collection. The late Dick Clayton was well known for many pursuits and much of his life was spent doing things for others in the community. Dick loved history and for many years was the historian at the Shepparton RSL. He started the Darwin Defenders branch off the Goulburn Valley and was also instrumental in establishing a memorial at the entrance to the Shepparton Showgrounds. The Rookies Garden commemorates the 2,500 Army and 37,000 Air Force personnel who completed their basic (rookie) training there during World War II. What few people know is that Dick was also part of the original push to establish a museum for Shepparton. Dick donated his personal collection of radios, gramophones and telephones to MOVE and the new museum will

finally see them properly displayed. Just reading the dials of the old radios, with the original call signs of stations that broadcast across the region, is a walk down memory lane and another way for people to explore our social history.

While the larger part of the collection is housed in Melbourne in a private museum and encompasses over 200 bicycles, a new home has been found for forty of those bicycles at MOVE making these amazing machines and the history embodied within them accessible to many more people. Some of the best examples of bicycles from the Farren collections are at MOVE ranging from pennyfarthings to a side by side sociable built in the period from 1850 to 1900

when a lot of the design problems were solved and all the major changes happened, pneumatic tyres, diamond frame and chain drives for example.

THE PAT & TINA SERVICE STATION LEGEND LIVES ON AT THE ALL NEW MUSEUM OF VEHICLE EVOLUTION (MOVE) The legendary service to 1000s of customers in the Goulburn Valley lives on at the all new MOVE with a Pat & Tina’s BP service station replica.

When Pat and Tina joined the BP family over 45 years ago, customers filling up at BP Shepparton were immediately greeted by two of the biggest smiles in the business. Great customer service was a trademark well-known to locals around the district. The family partnership continues today as Tina, her son Joe and his wife Angela continue to bring great passion to the business. Such long-standing relationships are a testament to the family’s innovation and commitment to their customers in Shepparton. Still going strong and servicing the district with a Smile.

AUSTRALIAN FOLK LAW... The Furphy water tank became a part of the Australian lexicon in World War One you can see at the Furphy Collection at the new MOVE. Photo: Deanne Peters

Within the Museum of Vehicle Evolution is the Furphy Museum, a collection of historical items and products that reflect the story behind Australia’s oldest continuous running businesses.

The Furphy Museum was officially opened by The Deputy Premier of Victoria, the Hon Mr Peter Ryan as part of the companies 150th anniversary celebrations in 2014. The Furphy companies retain their place in leading manufacturing and engineering in Shepparton having employed thousands upon thousands of Shepparton residents over its lengthy history. The exhibition portrays some of the more rustic aspects of its early business, in particular the Furphy water cart that established its reputation in the days when Australians participated in World War I but more importantly, in helping the country open up in the Goulburn Valley. The company has moved on since those early days yet remains a dominant part of Shepparton’s history today.

A MESSAGE FROM MOVE EXECUTIVE OFFICER

PETER HILL

INDUSTRIAL • COMMERCIAL • GARAGES • RURAL BUILDINGS

Proud to be involved in the construction of MOVE. We would like to congratulate the museum board and staff on their vision for this great complex. We look forward to a continued association. 5821 4399 THE Museum of Vehicle Evolution has many facets but one common thread, a desire to create something positive for the Goulburn Valley. Jim Andreadis has been the driving force behind this project, but the idea had been around for a generation. Jim's generosity extends well beyond his philanthropic support; his vigour and enthusiasm has inspired others to become involved and has expanded MOVE beyond our wildest dreams. Substantial financial support from the Australian Government, Victorian Government and Greater Shepparton City Council has been critical, allowing us to develop a world-class museum that will play a crucial role in expanding our visitor economy and economic base. MOVE is really about us, showcasing the things we drove, wore or used. It is full of interesting objects, some shiny, some rustic and some just rusty.

It is also full of people and their stories, particularly the families who built our region's reputation as a transport and trucking mecca. Through the Furphy Museum, the story of Australia's oldest continuously operated family business is revealed. Loel Thomson's Clothing Collection is a marvel, collected over four decades and containing 10,000 items. It is a significant attraction in its own right. MOVE is a not-for-profit charitable enterprise, and we could not have achieved what we have without the generosity of our board members past and present, our staff, volunteers and sponsors. MOVE has been built by the community for the community. We hope you will visit often, discover new displays and make an effort to tell your friends and family when next in Shepparton you must experience MOVE.

Balancing trucks, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, memorabilia and collectables is quite a task but the layout allows visitors to meander. “We wanted to make it a journey, not just through history, but one of discovery,” Jade said. “There are places to explore, wherever you are in the Museum you get glimpses of what’s to come.” Jade has scouted far and wide for vehicles but it may surprise some that the Goulburn Valley is often the best place to start, even for rare and collectable vehicles. “The region has such a rich motoring history and you can find nit just interesting or historically important vehicles, but some of the best examples

I’m actually a little bit surprised at myself at how much I am enjoying it and how interesting it is,” Stacy said. “Obviously, my passion is ancient history but this is more than 200 years of Australian history told through the clothes we wore every day.,” Loel Thomson has helped to relocate the collection, including having the first display ready for the public. “From now on, It’s really just a matter of getting in there amongst the clothes, looking at it, feeling it and seeing it for myself, and getting that real familiarity with the whole collection,” Stacy said. Stacey will change the displays regularly, reflecting different eras, designers, social norms and shifts in technology. The collection also has its own library, an important resource for research which is already helping to build links with academic institutions.
