Near Century of Service In the post war era of last century the concept of a Bush nursing hospital was in its infancy, originally established to support rural post WW2 veterans in their own communities, there were limited funds available and Dame Nellie Melba put on a concert that raised £2,500 as a permanent endowment toward the cause As the rural Bush Nursing service expanded across Victoria the Nagambie Bush Nursing Hospital was established in 1929. It was Lord Somers, the then Governor of Victoria, who officiated at the opening on December 19, 1929 with the support of his wife Lady Somers who received a gold key to open the facility. The original function of the Bush Nursing Hospital was to offer a broad range of services including maternity , surgical services , hospital care and aged care. Through a number of health reforms over the last 20 years Nagambie Bush Nursing

Congratulations to the Management & Staff at Nagambie HealthCare

as they celebrate the completion of their stage 1 & 2 development.

Achieving mutual growth and success through strong business partnerships

Hospital has evolved to become Nagambie HealthCare (NHC) , A community owned not for profit organisation providing Hospital, Aged and Community Care services to a catchment area of 3,300 square km that comprises predominantly of farms and small hamlets. A fundamental feature of NHC is that being a locally owned and supported service the service is acutely aware of the social determinants of health associated with rurality and social isolation and in particular their impact within the Nagambie community. As a rural provider, NHC maintains strong social justice values and places priority on access to its services without emphasis on financial resources. In supporting an ageing farming community NHC services are in demand, primarily due to the continuum of care, flexibility in service and outreach services

More like a family

REDEVELOPMENT STAGES 1 & 2

NAGAMBIE HealthCare has around 90 members of staff ranging from carers, to admin to maintenance. In chatting with some of them, the overwhelming opinion is it is a great place to be part of and to work. CEO, Bronwyn Beadle says, “We have a great organisational culture. Our staff are happy to come to work and that attitude is relayed through to the care of our patients, residents and community clients.” Rather than nominate one individual over another each month to highlight staff achievements, they draw a name out of a hat based on nominations from staff and consumers for one to be acknowledged. The name drawn receives a paid a day off work and some other side benefits like a massage and Bronwyn will take on their duties for the day. With low turn-over of staff and opportunities for staff to rotate across the many levels of service Nagambie HealthCare provides including acute care, nursing home, independent living, home help, respite and hospital recovery, staff think of their role as being part of a large family.

We are pleased to support this wonderful initiative taken by the board. Having personally visited patients in the hospital and hostel we know the care is second to none and the staff are wonderful.

Caring for the community

NEW ROOMS AT NAGAMBIE HEALTHCARE... Adding space and facility. Photo: Supplied

Adding space and amenity WHEN the Bush Nursing Hospital was first established in 1929, the design was according to the needs and funds available in the day. As the health care system in Australia has evolved in response to evidence based practice and modelling for health systems health services have adapted to best meet the need of their communities and health system frameworks. With that in mind, funds

provided by the State and Federal governments have been used to construct 10 new hospital rooms and to refurbish a further 18 Aged care rooms in line with modern standards. Older rooms will be remodelled to be larger and will include private ensuites and better overall amenity the works will also include the construction of a new kitchen and laundry

Making the old new again FOR an establishment that has existed since 1929, the Nagambie HealthCare facility is in remakablely good condition. With the aid of $700,000 in Victorian Government funds and a further $2.1M in Federal funding, Nagambie HealthCare has been able to undertake some major refurbishment along with the construction of a number of new rooms and up-grading of others. The funds were also used to rebuild the façade and reception area that enhances the overall security of the centre.

Maintaining our independence AS we age, we often want to down-size our life to a location that offers all the facilities and services we need. At the same time, we still want to retain our independence to do a little gardening or cook our own meals and enjoy our own comfort before we reach that point where we need more assistance. At Nagambie HealthCare, the options of accommodation range from independent living to full palliative care. For some, the independent units reside on the edge of Lake Nagambie

with views that are breath-taking. Maintaining your independence as well as having the added benefit of a full range of care and medical services close at hand is the best of both worlds. There are many services like cleaning, laundry, personal care and meals that can be made available to help you with everyday living so you may age independently. We may even want the gardening maintained for us yet still have a place of our own.

Keeping our mind and body functioning swim in the lakes cool waters while even just sitting by its edge will have its own therapeutic effect. The township of Nagambie is within walking distance for those that like to go for a coffee or simply browse the shops. The activity options are wide open such as bus trips, happy hour or even fraternising with kids from the kinder every so often and while maintaining independence is a priority, being able to join in is an advantage.

AGE has an uncanny ability to want to slow us down so it is only perseverance that we have available to slow that process down. Living on the edge of a lake offers an abundance of activities for the young at heart. At Nagambie HealthCare located right on the banks of Lake Nagambie, fishing is an easy activity to engage in as many do. There are some brave souls who, at the height of summer, will go for a
