Maculata Place

Foreword from Kerri Rivett CEO, Shepparton Villages ALL of us here in the Shepparton Villages community are very excited with the completion of the new $34M, 120 bed Maculata Place facility. This facility will set the benchmark for aged care in the region and is a stunning community where the residents can really ‘live’ and are given choices and control of their life. There has been a lot of planning and thought behind the way that this community facility functions and the evolved model of care that has been introduced will ensure quality of life for the residents, their families and our staff. All elements of the actual build process have been designed to allow as much natural light in as possible, as all the research shows that if you have access to natural light and you can see greenery you are less likely to get depressed. The entrance way acts as a plaza, complete with a gym, doctors’ clinic and hairdressing salon, so as the residents feel as though they are visiting a shopping plaza. The yards offer the residents choice with being involved in helping to raise chickens through the purpose-built chook pen and garden areas where those residents with a green thumb can get their hands dirty and contribute to the planting and growth of our wonderful outdoor grounds. The indoor environment has been set up to enable the residents. There are kitchen and breakfast bars that the residents and their families have access to, acting as cafés or a home-style kitchen area. And all of this is just some of what is on offer in this new and wonderful community. We are moving into an exciting time in aged care and this new community facility is just the beginning of that.

All the comforts of home with quality of life offerings THE new $34M, 120 bed Shepparton Villages’ Maculata Place is redefining what aged care facilities are and offers a real sense of home and community for the residents. It is easy to see that those who have had a hand in designing and creating the concept for the building have really given thought to the

As you enter the magnificent foyer of Maculata Place, you are swept along into large open aired lounge and dining areas, all bordered by floor to ceiling glass windows. The bright furniture and décor is a delight to the eye; fresh, modern and inviting. There is ample space to sit and linger over a meal or a cup of tea, to chat with friends or find a quiet nook for reading or reflection.

future of aged care, the needs of the current residents and those of the ageing population across the region. Rather than a typical institutionalised aged care facility Maculata Place offers a whole new experience for residents and their families that reflects life outside the walls.

It’s built like a community. The rooms are the residents’ homes, the corridors are the streets, the dining areas are the cafés and the social areas are the community hubs. We want the residents and their families to come in and be a part of a community. Kerri Rivett, CEO

As you move into the corridors - aptly named as streets – you get a sense that you are about to enter a neighbourhood. Framed black and white photographs of scenes in and around Shepparton adorn the walls, evoking memories for residents and visitors alike. A series of artworks from Shepparton High School is the first of a 12 month rotating art exhibition featured on walls upstairs and downstairs. Meandering past these works, you enter either Woodhouse Lane (downstairs) or Turnour Terrace (upstairs) where residents’ homes are distinguished by individual letterboxes and memory boxes at the entry, with a doorbell to each home to provide privacy and dignity for residents at all times.

COMFORTABLE LIVING… The rooms, or homes, at Maculata Place have state-of-theart features that will mean the residents can live comfortably. Photo: Supplied.

Huge 50 inch televisions in every room provide access to the SWIFT network – a Foxtel for seniors - that stores 700 movies, allows residents to see photos sent in from their families, as well as provide personalised messages to residents to remind them of an appointment, outing or the meals menu for the day. Large king single beds with padded bedheads and matching soft furnishings, storage galore and a large private bathroom, is home for the residents of Maculata Place. Management of the phone system is the responsibility of the staff at Maculata Place – so there is no more dealing with telephone providers for the residents. Wi-Fi access for residents and visitors is on a separate loop to the office based Wi-Fi and there is overhead lifting to assist residents who require assistance.

Dining at Maculata Place is an experience in itself – with the dining areas built around large kitchens that are for resident and family use. The plaza at the front of the building is home to a fully Whilst we have a operational hair salon, nail full meals service that bar, doctor’s clinic and gym. offers menu options at lunch There is a beautifully and dinner, we also want residents appointed private dining to feel right at home and whip up room with adjoining a batch of scones if they wish, or balcony for resident use spend some time cooking in the for special occasions and kitchen with their friends and there are coffee machines family or our staff, or just come and snacks in various kitchen nooks for families, and make a cup of tea. visitors and residents to Kerri Rivett, CEO access any time they wish. The lounge areas are complete with knick-knacks, throw rugs and luxurious pillows scattered about the colourful furniture – and all you want to do is sink into one of the high backed chairs.

The 20 bed dementia unit named Bertram House draws you in with its bright colours and lack of institutionalised locked doors and directive signage. In fact, residents can wander freely through this wing, enjoying the magnificent outdoor courtyard, the dining and lounge areas or take advantage of the quiet lounges. There is just one locked door in and out of this area enabling freedom of movement for those with cognitive impairment, and the design has been specific to cue appropriate behaviour and enable residents to have their best day possible.

HONOURABLE DONATION… The Griffiths Family Café courtyard is in honour of a donation made by John Griffiths in recognition of the care Shepparton Villages gave to his mother, Phyllis, known affectionately as Chuki. Photo: Katelyn Morse.

The Griffiths Family Café courtyard immediately adjoins the dining room. It’s designed to provide an alfresco feel with tables and umbrellas so that residents can take their meals into the courtyard and enjoy the outdoors as they dine.

There are four internal courtyards in the building, each with a specific theme and purpose. The Patch is located in the heart of Bertram House. All residents’ rooms, along with the dining room face onto this beautifully crafted tactile courtyard which includes water features, shaded seating and garden beds.

The outside beckons with delightful landscaping, outdoor eating and activity areas, and comfortable furniture invites you to pop outside and enjoy the delights of the striking outdoor living areas.

The Conservatory adjoins the main lounge and is a very generously proportioned space that includes a double-sided fireplace that is shared with the lounge. Residents can sit in this paved space and enjoy the fire (encased behind glass for safety purposes). This courtyard contains a lovely water feature and residents can enjoy a relaxed and therapeutic space.

The Rotary Club of Shepparton Garden Courtyard is a gardener’s delight. It features a dozen elevated, selfwatering garden beds that are available for residents to ‘grow their own.’ This will be an area of high resident engagement (and probably competition!). There is also a good sized gardening storage area at the northern end of the courtyard.

And if those areas are not enough to tempt you, there’s an outdoor rotunda and barbecue area and a rather palatial chook house that some lucky cluckers will be able to call home!

Maculata Place is more than an aged care facility; it is a community, a home and a beautiful space to live. Shepparton Villages Commemorative Magazine by The Adviser - October, 2018 | 3

Founding forefathers

vision for future realised IT WAS through the vision of locals, Lance Woodhouse OAM and Keppel Turnour OAM that helped bring to life the success story that has become Shepparton Villages. With the journey beginning in 1968, the pair’s dream has exceeded even their expectations and with the opening of Maculata Place and the pending redevelopment at Rodney Park in Mooroopna, Lance and Keppel are proud to see just how far Shepparton Villages has come. Lance said, “The evolution of Shepparton Villages and where it is today is absolutely marvellous. I can’t believe how successful it has been. “When we established it, all that we knew was that there was a need for accommodation for aged people. I was a lawyer in my working life and it was quite common for me to have people come to me in my office and say they had to see their mother in Ballarat, Beechworth or other areas with aged care facilities outside of Shepparton because there was just nothing here for the ageing population and that’s how we came to take on the project. Keppel Turnour was chairman of the committee of Rotary that undertook that task and he and I

have been with it ever since. “In the early days Rotarians and other volunteers carried out all of the functions to make the village a pleasant place for looking after aged people. “There are two aspects to running a successful aged care facility. The first is the care of financial aspects and the second is care of the residents. “Shepparton Villages is a model of what aged care should be and we were very fortunate in having had two people Kevin Bertram and Jeanette Ryan. Kevin looked after the operation and Jeanette made absolutely sure that residents were the number one priority. “It is astounding to see how the model of aged care has changed. Not-for-profit aged care is the most desirable way to establish an aged care facility because there is no consideration of profit. Everything that Shepparton Villages has made has gone back to further development and improvements.

“The new Maculata Place is unbelievable. It’s really the result of very good organisation and thought. “The Rotary Club of Shepparton deserves great credit for having the vision of establishing aged care when there was a lack of it in Shepparton.” Keppel said, “I was optimistic about Shepparton Villages getting to where it is today. We knew there was a need for it at the time we started it all. I said to the town clerk when we began working on Tarcoola that there would be more sites and now there are three. “As far as caring and accommodating for aged people in regional Australia I believe it’s one of the largest aged care facilities which is great. I am very proud of it and they do a great job. “Maculata Place is a very well planned building and it is very pleasing to know it has come up so well and that Shepparton Villages has made the effort in planning as it should be. “It’s 50 years since we started Shepparton Villages and it is pleasing to know it has gone so well and has cared for so many people over the years.”

Contributions help to raise more than $200,000 TO HELP raise funding for the furnishing of Maculata Place, Shepparton Villages launched the Giving Tree Appeal at the turning of the sod in April last year. Donations from $20 right through to substantial individual donations have all contributed to more than $200,000 being raised to help furnish Maculata Place with all the comforts of home. Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum made the very first donation to the appeal at the turning of the sod, and the

Independent Living Unit Support Group at Tarcoola followed suit with a substantial donation. Shepparton Villages CEO, Kerri Rivett said, “The Giving Tree will be planted and a plaque unveiled to acknowledge community support at the official opening in November. “We’d like to thank everybody who has contributed since the launch. You can be proud knowing that you are a part of this fantastic development, even from the smallest donation - every cent has helped.”

A proud board ALL FOR THE RESIDENTS, STAFF AND WIDER COMMUNITY… Shepparton Villages Board president, Merushe Asim with resident, Harry Gibson. Photo: Supplied.

Shepparton Villages Board president, Merushe Asim, vice president, Frank Dawson and board members, Geoff Dobson, David Fordyce, Mike Hall, Rebecca Hearn, Elizabeth Lee, Stephen Merrylees and Jeanette Powell spent many hours before, during and into the delivery of the new Maculata Place building ensuring that it was something that not only suited the current needs of the community and its residents but also serves well going forward into the future. Merushe said, “It is up to the board to make decisions for the benefit of the residents. We strive to provide the best quality care for our residents. Part of that was the relationship model of care where the staff become an extension of the resident’s families and this can be found in Maculata Place. “Maculata Place has been designed differently for our staff and the residents to relieve pressure from staff and open up choices for our residents. “The board comes from a variety of different backgrounds

I would like to thank each member of the Shepparton Villages Board for their innovation and their forward thinking around setting the needs of the residents for now and I couldn’t thank them enough for allowing me to do that. Maculata Place is different to every other residential care facility and the board has had the foresight to design something for today and into the future. Shepparton Villages CEO, Kerri Rivett

BRINGING to life a community building such as Shepparton Villages’ Maculata Place takes a lot of planning and organisation, and with a strong backing from the Shepparton Villages Board, residents and the wider community can be proud of what has been achieved.

and all had input in the final design and delivery as well as carrying out residential consultations to ensure we were all on the same mindset and it has turned out exactly as we wanted. “Every time we go to Maculata Place we are so impressed. One of the residents have said they never thought they would live in something as beautiful as this and another gentleman said he just loved the colours. It’s great to see already that it fits the requirement of what the residents want in their life. That kind of feedback is fantastic and lets you know it fits the requirements of a better residential care model for our residents. “All credit needs to go to CEO, Kerri Rivett for her foresight and her expertise.” Frank said, “The board has had quite a strong involvement in Maculata Place. We have a Project Control Committee that meets regularly with various contractors, project managers and others over the course of the construction period as well as well before construction with the planning process. “Prior to design process we had a strong consultation with the council and the public in terms of setting it up so that the new building could be built where it was. That was a

successful process and when we secured that land we then went on to planning, design and appointing an architect and project manager. “We felt that as a not-for-profit community based organisation we wanted to focus our attention on the high care area of Maculata Place which was the basis for the facility and we felt that’s where the strongest community need will be going into the future. “The board is very pleased with the outcome. We believe we have obtained a building that has the latest in technology and design and we are particularly pleased with the way the building works as a home for the residents. We wanted to make sure this is a family friendly place that people feel comfortable living in. “We also believe it is sitting well within the parkland and we are looking at developing that further with extensive landscaping. “The board has been very appreciative of the involvement of our CEO, Kerri Rivett and executive staff who have put a huge amount of work in getting this right and getting an outcome that will be well received by the wider community.”

VISION TO LIFE… Shepparton Villages Board vice president, Frank Dawson and the rest of the board are proud to have been a part of creating the Maculata Place community. Photo: Supplied.

A generous community

THE GENEROSITY of many throughout our local community has contributed greatly to Shepparton Villages over the years. Many groups and individuals have acknowledged the importance of the new Maculata Place community. Each donor has contributed various amounts that have helped create the look and feel that the Shepparton Villages Board, staff and other stakeholders envisaged. MAKING THE VISION A REALITY… Many local individuals and groups have pledged deep to help make the vision of Maculata Place a reality. Billabong Garden Complex:

Propagated more than 8,000 plants that adorn the gardens at Maculata Place. Billabong Garden Complex manager, Tracy Lamont said, “Our supported employees were excited to be a part of this Shepparton Villages project.

Contract growing more than 8,000 plants for the new facility is such a wonderful partnership as it provides meaningful employment and training opportunities for local people with a disability whilst at the same time supplying Shepparton Villages with quality locally grown plants for their new gardens. We have grown a range of plants for Shepparton Villages from small seedlings and perennials to large advanced trees to plant out in beautiful garden spaces for the residents to enjoy. Santo Donato Committee, Tatura:

Made a donation of $7,500 towards Maculata Place, which has been recognised with a custom designed entry table in their name that will be placed in the magnificent plaza. Committee President, Joe Gagliardi said, “We are a not-for-profit charity organisation and every year we run our annual function to celebrate the Italian heritage and on the side, we raise some funds.”

We thought it would be a good thing to be a part of the new Maculata Place building and as we know, it’s important to reflect on where we’ve all come from and how we enjoy Australia as it is today and the elderly have contributed to that. Rotary Club of Shepparton:

Made a donation of $45,000 for the Maculata Place Garden Courtyard, which has been named ‘The Rotary Club of Shepparton Garden Courtyard.’

Our Rotary Club started Shepparton Villages and we like to keep connected. We’ve maintained our relationship over the years and we wanted to be a part of the new building so we made the decision to donate toward the Garden Courtyard.

REGULAR DONORS... Tarcoola ILU Support Group is one of three support groups that regularly donates to Shepparton Villages. President, Kevin Ritchie and secretary, Edie Poliness present CEO, Kerri Rivett with yet another cheque. Photo: Supplied.

Tarcoola ILU Support Group, Rodney Park ILU Support Group, Kialla ILU Support Group:

Made up of residents from the Independent Living Units at each site, the groups have made many donations over the last two years, including the Tarcoola group who were amongst the first to donate to Maculata Place ($3,700) at the turning of the sod. Tarcoola ILU Support Group president, Kevin Ritchie said, “We donated the funds to go toward the furnishings. Maculata Place is a great thing for Shepparton.”

John Griffiths:

A GENEROUS DONATION… After receiving a generous donation by John Griffiths, Shepparton Villages decided to name one of the courtyards at Maculata Place in memory of his mother, who lived at Banksia Place. Photo: Supplied.

Furphy Foundry:

Made a substantial personal donation towards the outdoor dining courtyard at Maculata Place in memory of his mother, Phyllis, more affectionately known as Chuki. The courtyard has been named ‘The Griffiths Family Courtyard,’ John said, “My mother was at Banksia Lodge and was so well looked after. I couldn’t speak more highly of David Shipston and the team, I was so very comfortable with the way my mother was cared for and the routine she was in. It was just like home for her and I wanted to acknowledge the Shepparton Villages family and the organisation as a whole.”

Shepparton Villages purchased park benches for the new Maculata Place facility and Furphy Foundry donated $7,000 worth of those.

Anonymous:

Made a substantial donation of $20,000 to Maculata Place to go towards the fitting out of the private dining room upstairs for residents and their families to use, as well as for the quiet room in Bertram House.

A warming example of community spirit THE amazing group of volunteers known as The Love to Sew Ladies at Shepparton Villages have been busy ever since plans for Maculata Place were first discussed. The women – and sometimes gentlemen – who come together regularly to share a love for the craft of sewing, committed to making 120 patchwork quilts for each of the beds in Maculata Place. They set about sourcing unique materials with Indigenous patterns, each telling a story to add to the ambience at Maculata Place. This incredible project began several years ago and involved a trip to Melbourne to source the unique patterned material for the quilts. The material was purchased through M and S Textiles Australia in Collingwood.

The ladies have always supported Shepparton Villages with financial donations from events and fetes they have held and continued to fundraise to pay for the materials to make the quilts. Once residents have settled into their new home, the Love to Sew Ladies will visit to present their quilts to each resident. More recently, the ladies produced the most magnificent black and white Collingwood themed quilt that went to silent auction. The winning bidder paid $1,050 for the quilt and the ladies presented the cheque to CEO, Kerri Rivett to go towards Maculata Place. This is such a wonderful example of the community spirit that has helped make Maculata Place a true home for all who reside there.

AT YOUR LEUISURE… Resident, Marie Molisak using one of the coffee machines in one of the communal kitchen areas. Photo: Katelyn Morse.

A new era of aged care

THE truth is that many people look poorly on the aged care system due to the fact they feel as though they will lose their independence. But the aged care system has evolved from a medical institutionalised model of care to creating spaces that those in aged care can enjoy, have more choice and control over and feel like they are at home. Shepparton Villages CEO, Kerri Rivett said, “The new model of care is all about relationships. When you live in a community you have strong relationships with others in the community. “This is all about moving away from the ‘medical model’ and into creating an environment where you make decisions

and choices on how to live your life and our staff will help to enable that to happen, and in turn become an extension of the residents’ families. “As part of the new model, we are providing spaces and areas that the residents and their families can enjoy and feel as though

A WONDERFUL PLAZA… Maculata Place’s plaza area has a salon and doctor’s suite which helps the residents to feel as though they are going to the shops. Photo: Supplied.

they are at home. For example, as a family member wouldn’t it be nice if Nan asked if you would like a coffee or biscuit and they can go and get you one without having to ask staff. “It’s about enabling the residents to do as much as possible like they would at home.”

Care Managers

Alanna Jalkanen and Wayde Vidler There will be two Care Managers at Maculata Place. Alanna Jalkanen has made the move from Hakea with the residents and will be the Care Manager for the ground floor. Wayde Vidler is coming across from Rodney Park and will be Care Manager for Level One. Both will work together to oversee the care of all residents and ensure staff are happy in their workplace. “Maculata Place will be lovely for the residents as this state-of-the-art home has wonderful views overlooking parkland and the courtyards and other areas will enable them to interact with each other and enjoy living a bigger life,” Alanna said.

14 | Shepparton Villages Commemorative Magazine by The Adviser - October, 2018

“The whole feel of the facility is all about creating a home environment and a lot of work has been put into the design and model of care so that it is not seen as an institution. It’s a place that residents can enjoy and invite their families over to.” Wayde said he was excited about the opportunity to work in such an innovative and modern environment that has managed to incorporate care needs as well as all the comforts of home. “Change can be confronting for some people – residents and staff – but everything has been done to ensure a smooth transition for all,” he said.

ENJOYING ROTATING ART EXHIBITIONS… Maculata Place resident, Steve Szmola enjoying the first exhibition of the rotating community art that adorns the exhibition walls at Maculata Place. Photo: Katelyn Morse.

Art exhibit bringing community into Maculata Place A ROTATING art exhibition with art works from local schools and kindergartens will grace the walls of Maculata Place. The first exhibit features works from art students at Shepparton High School. PR, Marketing and Fundraising Manager, Jo Breen explained that every 12 months, the artwork will rotate to another school, allowing students the opportunity to have their work

professionally framed and displayed as part of a rotating community art exhibit. “We will bring the artists into Maculata Place to officially launch the exhibit, giving the residents and student a chance to mingle and discuss their work. It is a great opportunity to bring a cohort of young people into our community and we are so very grateful to Louise McDade-Cartey and the students at Shepparton High School for their hard work,” Jo said. The Shepparton High School students began working on their pieces earlier this year.

Personal Care Worker

Lilibeth Tancredi

I have been working at Shepparton Villages for four years and it’s so great to see this spacious new facility all set up. It is very beautiful. The residents really like the space. It is a great new mode of care where residents feel like they have more choice, privacy, love and care. 18 | Shepparton Villages Commemorative Magazine by The Adviser - October, 2018

Art teacher, Louise McDade-Cartey said the project had been a great focus for the students and teachers, and that everyone was really excited about being involved in Maculata Place. “I’ve never done anything like this before with our students but for them to be able to have their work professionally curated in a building like this is just amazing. The building is absolutely beautiful and we are so proud to be the first community art exhibitors. The students are looking forward to the opening so they can see their works hung on the walls,” Louise said.

Message from resident

Zelia Dryden

I have been at Shepparton Villages for 25 years. I started at Rodney Park and then moved to Hakea Lodge in January 2018. The new Maculata Place building is a wonderful facility. I used to be a hairdresser so I am looking forward to getting my hair and nails done in the salon. I am very happy with the

staff at Shepparton Villages…they are so caring so it is nice to have them moving over to Maculata Place with us.

Maculata Place

INPUT HELPS TO GET IT RIGHT… Shepparton Villages residents and staff were consulted to ensure that Maculata Place was just right. From left, resident, George O’Keefe, commissioning team member, Jacinta Munro, volunteers, Gwen Wallace and resident, Noemi Coutts helped to choose the fabric for the chairs. Photo: Supplied.

Consultation and education A BUILDING supports residents and staff in what they do every day. Hence, to ensure Shepparton Villages got it right, a considerable amount of consultation was undertaken with key staff and residents. Residents were involved in the selection of furniture, colours, fabrics and even decided what was to be stocked in the vending machines! CEO, Kerri Rivett said, “They told us loud and clear they wanted more storage in their rooms and bigger en-suites with room for their hairdryers.” Regular meetings and communications with residents and their families began well before the first sod was turned, and numerous meetings allowed everyone to ask questions, become familiar with the building and relocation processes and make suggestions. “It also gave everyone a chance to have input and on a few

occasions some very good points were raised, and we were able to adapt plans to suit,” Kerri said. From a staff perspective, training and familiarisation with the new building has been taking place. Education on the model of care which is centred on residents first and foremost, as well as the concept of the building as a community has been rolled out at various training sessions. Some early tours of the building gave the kitchen staff a chance to road test the kitchens as they served meals while the maintenance team have been testing and re-testing all systems for weeks.

COSY AND COMFORTABLE…

Consultation with residents and staff resulted in beautiful cosy nooks throughout the building, replicating home. One of the gorgeous high backed chairs, a lamp and little table is an ideal spot to read the paper or enjoy a quiet cup of tea. Wellseated, the company that supplied many of the chairs in consultation with residents and staff, has named one of the styles ‘The Shepparton.’ Photo: Supplied.

PUTTING RESIDENTS FIRST… Staff received additional training on the new model of care that is in place at Maculata Place. Pictured, Medication Endorsed Enrolled Nurse, Lori Ryan working with residents. Photo: Supplied.

Message from resident

Message from resident

I have been with Shepparton Villages since the end of March 2018 and moving across to Maculata Place is very exciting. The facility is more spacious and I will be joining in with the many activities available. I am happy and smiling all the time and enjoy getting out in the gardens, so I wouldn’t mind planting some seedlings.

I started my relationship with Shepparton Villages at Rodney Park 25 years ago. When I moved in they had 12 new units being built and my wife, Jean and I were lucky to get one of those. After 20 years I moved to Tarcoola as I required assisted living arrangements and it was closer to my boys, Ross and Barry.

Joan Young

Geoff Freer

Maculata Place is wonderful. We had a lot of musicals and other activities at Tarcoola and I am looking forward to enjoying those activities as well as the new relaxing areas. The staff have been marvellous and cannot be faulted.

CONSTRUCTION SUCCESS… Builders, Hansen Yuncken worked with stakeholders and others who were instrumental in bringing Maculata Place to life. Photo: Supplied.

Building a community Message from residents

Lorraine & Ross Lobegeir

I moved into Hakea Lodge in April after my husband Ross moved in February. We are moving together to Maculata Place – it is beautiful, words fail me. I love my room in all the blues as blue is my favorite colour. The staff here are just like family. You can see how welcome you are, but you can also feel it.

DELIVERING a state-of-the-art aged care community like the new Maculata Place at Shepparton Villages requires a collaborative approach as well as a keen focus on user requirements, according to award-winning builder, Hansen Yuncken. Hansen Yuncken project manager, Matthew Ledger said, “Right from the very start of the project we needed to work closely with the design team, client, architect, consultants and local stakeholders to get everything in place for success. “Understanding the aspirations and objectives for the new facility was critical in allowing us to complete the last 25 percent of the design and gain approval to commence construction.” Works on the stunning new facility began in June 2017. Now, 15 months later, Maculata Place is ready for its first residents. A key element of the community’s design is its look and feel; homely streetscapes welcome residents and visitors, while inside the new homes, natural light and innovative features provide a safe and relaxing ambience. Matthew said, “One of the items the client was keen to have

22 | Shepparton Villages Commemorative Magazine by The Adviser - October, 2018

implemented in the design was to have a lot of natural light. They also had a brief stating they wanted to add in lifting tracks in the bedrooms to improve resident safety. We implemented a H track system that passes over the wall to allow residents to be lifted to their ensuite in one smooth movement. We installed the system into 25 of the 120 rooms constructed. “We also installed a 99 KW solar system placed on the roof and added double glazing on the windows to improve energy efficiency. We also utilised Biowood for elements of the façade. This is a recycled product that is made up of recycled milk bottles and other plastic items such as bags, but it has the look of natural wood. “Having worked in Shepparton for over 90 years, local knowledge proved invaluable in providing jobs for the local community. We involved as many locals as possible and we’ve been able to deliver a fantastic building. Together, we’ve really captured and delivered what Shepparton Villages envisaged and the residents will be proud to live there. “I’m very proud of our team to deliver such a high quality product in such a short time.”

Bringing life to the outdoors

Personal Care Worker

WHILE the indoors of the Maculata Place community are impressive, the outdoor gardening areas and four internal courtyards bring a lot of life to the living experience of residents and it couldn’t have been done without the hard work put in by the Shepparton Villages gardeners.

Barry Curtis, Adrian Stagg, Sean Davidson and Rob Moulton spent four months using their green thumbs to create delightful garden areas for Maculata Place, planting more than 8,000 trees, plants and shrubs that were propagated by the team at the Billabong Garden Complex, laying 210m of instant turf, 100 cubic metres of compost, 150 cubic metres of mulch, 2.5km of 25mm pipe and completing 2,000 micro sprays. Barry said, “We’d like to thank the suppliers and their staff including the Billabong Garden Complex, Cleave’s Garden Supplies, Water Plus, Western Composting Technologies, GV Sprinklers and Damian Preston for the site levelling.

We’d also like to pay tribute to the Shepparton Villages’ Board, CEO, Kerri Rivett and all the Shepparton Villages staff who have had anything to do with the development as well as the residents for being so helpful. Also the builders, Hansen Yunken for being so cooperative with us. “Personally, I’d like to thank Sean Davidson, Adrian Stagg and Rob Moulton for their hard work in helping to complete such a big project. “It’s been a real privilege working on these gardens. Maculata Place is a great thing for the whole community. “Our next big project will be the Rodney Park development and we’re looking forward to that.”

I have spent the past three years with the Shepparton Villages community and I love the idea of the courtyards and garden beds that the residents can take on at Maculata Place. It allows them to enjoy something that would be an interest of their own. It’s nice that the residents have larger rooms and access to many light filled spaces. We will still run the popular games and activities and will have more opportunities to allow the residents to complete activities that are more personalised to their choices. It’s important for the residents to have choices and this is a very exciting time for them, the staff and Shepparton Villages as a whole.

Maculata Place Housekeeper

Sue Sandlant

Over the past 21 years with Shepparton Villages I have seen big changes but this new Maculata Place facility is by far the biggest. The new equipment and updated kitchen will be a great benefit to the staff and to the residents. I love the residents so this is something I know is so good for them. The more modern care model will help the staff and see the residents feeling as though they are at home. They can do what they like and eat when they like, which I know some

of the residents will be very pleased with. Shepparton Villages is a great place to work. I love my job and being in the new facility, I am sure I will love it even more.

Resident Liaison

Kylie Miller

I have been with Shepparton Villages for 10 years and the change the new Maculata Place will bring to the residents is enormous. The courtyards and other common areas that they have created are just beautiful and amazing. This is the biggest and best change I’ve seen throughout my time with Shepparton Villages. We are all excited about the change.

Aged Care Funding and Care Support Officer

Bec Rando

Over the past 14 years working with Shepparton Villages I have been able to witness the new Banksia Place come about and now seeing the new Maculata Place completed is just wonderful. The state-of-the-art facility will provide more up to date care for a wider range of the residents. The doctor’s clinic will be a fantastic addition and the evolved model of care will mean all the residents can come in and feel like they can keep their

independence. The surroundings will be a lot more beneficial for them.

AMAZING TEAMWORK… From left, Sue Taylor and Jacinta Munro head up the commissioning team and have done an amazing job. Photo: Supplied.

Working together to build a dream THEY say it takes a village to raise a child and without those within the village taking the care needed, working diligently and being nurturing it can impact on the growth. Shepparton Villages and its staff have been working together as a village to help raise the new Maculata Place and in working so well together it has finally grown into a community building that they can all be proud of.

CEO Kerri Rivett said, “There are many people to thank for all of the effort and work that has gone into building Maculata Place. The gardening team has done a fantastic job and in particular Barry Curtis. They worked hard at installing the more than 8,000 plants and the sprinkler system, which is a massive effort and the board and I want to sincerely thank them. “Ed McNair, who looks after the property and maintenance, has overseen the building and the commissioning of the building and he has done an excellent job. “I’d also like to thank the commissioning team. A special thanks go to Sue Taylor for overseeing all the furniture and equipment and Jacinta Munroe for taking care of the rosters. It’s been a massive task and they have done a wonderful job. “And lastly to all of those who have been involved in the establishment of Maculata Place, I wish to thank each and every one of you for your efforts.”

Maculata Place

A passion and love for aged care

AS a community based not for profit organisation, Shepparton Villages provides high quality care, services and facilities across its three community locations in Shepparton, Kialla and Mooroopna. The 410 full time, part time and casual staff are passionate about what they do and are often an extension of the resident’s family. Never has this been more important than during this time of change, as we transition into a new building at Tarcoola and begin work on the refurbishment of our facilities in Mooroopna. Shepparton Retirement Villages is the

largest aged care organisation in regional Victoria, caring for 271 aged persons in residential care across three sites. Each of these sites also houses Independent Living Units – about 337 residents in 272 units across the three sites.

Kialla Gardens Village

Kialla Gardens Village is situated in the Kialla Lakes Estate south of Shepparton. Its Residential Care Facilities include Banksia Lodge, a 65 bed Ageing in Place residential aged care service. There are also 109 Independent Living Units located at Kialla Gardens Village including 70 two bedroom units and 39 two bedroom units with a study.

Tarcoola Village

Tarcoola is the original site of the first aged care residential facility. It is home to Acacia House, a 60 bed nursing facility catering for people with high care needs. Tarcoola is also home to Hakea Lodge, a 57 bed ageing in place facility that has served our residents well over many years. Residents in Hakea Lodge will be moving across to Maculata Place and Hakea Lodge will eventually be decommissioned. However, it still has one more important job to do – to house our residents from Rodney Park Village in Mooroopna while the $18.2M refurbishments take place. These will begin in November this year and are expected to be completed in 2020. The administration and head office for Shepparton Retirement Villages is also located at Tarcoola. aromatherapy and Acacia House diversional therapy This is a 60 bed may be provided if nursing facility catering required. Banksia Lodge Banksia Lodge is a 65 bed Residential Aged Care Facility providing Ageing in Place accommodation for 62 residents and also two residents receiving respite care. The building has been designed to meet the ongoing care needs of residents who require low or high care. It is designed to enable residents to maximise their independence and reflects the cornerstone of everyday practice namely dignity, respect, privacy and choice. Accommodation at Banksia Lodge consists of single rooms with en-suites, providing total comfort in delightful and tasteful surroundings and includes four themed garden courtyards providing a tranquil outdoor space for our residents to relax and enjoy the company of other residents and family members.

Maculata Place

Rodney Park Village

There are 93 Independent Living Units located at Rodney Park Village in Knight Street, Mooroopna including 73 two bedroom units and 20 two bedroom units with a study. Rodney Park Village has been home to three 30 bed residential care facilities, Waratah Lodge, Grevillea Lodge and Boronia House. Like any home, after time, maintenance and upkeep is required. Plans announced earlier this year for a $18.5M refurbishment of Rodney Park’s residential facilities will result in the refurbishment of Grevillea Lodge and Boronia House and a complete rebuild and extension of Waratah Lodge – bringing the three 30 bed facilities under the one roof to be known as Mooroopna Place.

Rodney Park redevelopment to begin in November WHILST the bricks and mortar were coming together at Maculata Place, the Shepparton Villages Board of Management had moved on to planning the $18.2M redevelopment of residential care facilities at Rodney Park Village in Mooroopna. The plans were announced earlier this year and work is scheduled to begin late January 2019. The redevelopment will see the refurbishment of Grevillea Lodge and Boronia House and a complete rebuild and extension of Waratah Lodge – bringing the three 30 bed facilities under the one roof to be known as Mooroopna Place. An additional 10 beds will be added to Mooroopna Place, bringing the total to 100 for residential care, with the building to feature one central reception and community area. “Like any home, an aged care facility requires upkeep and renovation if it is to provide an environment that is comfortable, welcoming and safe. At Rodney Park Village this means we need to undertake major renovations to ensure our Mooroopna residents have the same beautifully modern, functional and comfortable home as our residents in Maculata Place have,” Shepparton Villages CEO, Kerri Rivett said. “Our model of care that centres around choice for residents has to a large extent dictated the building design. The buildings we are

designing, like Maculata Place, are communities not aged care facilities. The entry replicates the community with hairdressers, consultant rooms and the gym, while the dining and lounge areas are the cafes and social meeting places. Corridors are the streets that then lead to the residents’ homes- their beautifully appointed rooms,” she said. The new refurbishment will not affect the 93 Independent Living Units that are located on the Rodney Park site. The Board has committed $18.2M for Rodney Park, on the back of the $34M spent on Maculata Place at Tarcoola, demonstrating considerable investment in the future of aged care in this region. Board President, Merushe Asim said Rodney Park will be an exciting project that will be completed in 2020. “As you can imagine, any redevelopment of existing facilities requires a lot of forethought, logistical planning and discussion with residents, their families and staff which began with meetings

and information sessions at the end of 2017. Kerri and her team will continue to update all those involved as we progress with this redevelopment, but we hope that residents and their families will be confident in our ability to deliver once they see Maculata Place and what we can do,” Ms Asim said. Rodney Park residents will be relocated temporarily to the old Hakea Lodge building and some to Maculata Place during the redevelopment. “It is important our current residents remain part of Shepparton Villages as these residents are part of our family,” Ms Rivett said. “We are committed to ensuring the aged in our region are cared for in homes that reflect their expectations and those of their families and our community. We’ve shown what can be achieved with meticulous planning, consultation and forethought and we can’t wait to bring that same level of quality to the redevelopments in Mooroopna,” Ms Rivett said.
