Fresh fruit stronger than ever Sharp increase in desire for fresh fruit HEALTHY EATING, MORE FRUIT… A rise in the number of people choosing a healthier lifestyle has seen growth in the demand for fresh fruit. Pictured, Jeftomson Director, Peter Thompson. Photo: Madeleine Caccianiga.

By David Lee A S U B S TA N T I A L LY con s t a nt increase in healthy eating has lead to a higher demand for fresh foods over the past five years, meaning fresh fruit is being favoured by communities, not just across our country’s national market but also internationally. According to a local fruit cold storage and transport company and Fruit Growers Victoria, the demand for fresh fruit has seen an impressive jump over the past five years, with the demand leading to higher planting numbers and efficiencies in growing. A census taken last year, recording data of fruit trees from across the Goulburn Valley since 2009, revealed that 1,819 fruit trees had been planted over the past five years, inclusive of stonefruits, pomefruits and other fruits. Of the 1,819 trees 87 apple trees were planted in 2009 compared to 120 in 2013. A total of 509 apple trees were planted over the five year period, with only 62 of those trees being used to produce fruit for canning and the remaining sent fresh into the market. One lucky feline

MAX’S TALE… Pictured, Shepparton resident, Marg Dowley with her 19 year old cat, Max. Photo: Madeleine Caccianiga.

By David Lee HE’S one lucky feline and 19 year old, Max’s owner, Marg Dowley from Shepparton was happy to share the story of how the two were united, with Max starting his life out in-between the walls of her friend’s home. Mag said, “Max was born in the top of a chimney on a ledge and was the only one from his litter to survive. He had fallen from the chimney between two walls of my friends home, Noeleen and Wayne. They had heard a muffled noise coming from their lounge wall and eventually Wayne knocked a hole in the wall where he found a very malnutritioned Max. “He was a furry little ball of black and white fur but because Wayne and Noeleen had two dogs they asked if I would like to take him. “I took him home in a small bird cage because that was all I had at the time to transport him and he has lived quite happily with me for the past 19 and a half years. “He has a great personality, is good company, is very placid and loves to play. “I sometimes call him the Collingwood cat because of his colours and when he’s been good I give him a little custard and cream. “He has a lot to say and actually knows the word hungry, so when you say it he responds with a little meow. “He has a lot of spirit in him for a 19 year old cat but I hope he makes it to his 21st birthday in June, 2016,” Marg said.

Sparky fundraises at great heights SHEPPARTON Electrician, Steven Granger is preparing to embark on a fundraising challenge that will take him to great heights, choosing to join a team of 16 others who will be faced with the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation. With an aim to raise $20,000 individually, the 22 year old will tackle the climb in mid October, where he will trek for seven days to reach the summit at 19,000 feet. Steven said, “The Leukaemia Foundation do an amazing job. There are 3,000 people in Victoria affected per year by Leukaemia and 150 of those are in the Goulburn Valley. “My family and close friends have been affected by Leukaemia and I saw how hard it was on them. “I am fortunate enough to be fit and healthy and believe it is my responsibility to help make a difference in the world where I can. “I am passionate about inspiring young people to get involved in their local community,” Steven said. Steven has a number of fundraising activities organised in the lead up to his climb. The main event is a ‘Thousand Dollar Ticket Draw’ where, in a ‘last man standing’ style game, the winner will be the last ticket drawn. Campaign video shows bypass route THE proposed route for the Goulburn Valley Highway Bypass was released in a video last week, as part of the next stage of the Make Shepparton Greater campaign. The video, which is available on the Make Shepparton Greater website, describes how construction of the bypass will improve traffic flow across Greater Shepparton and includes a flyover of the bypass’ intended route. It also details the preferred program for constructing the bypass. Greater Shepparton City Council, Cr Kevin ‘Gunna’ Ryan said, “Construction of the Shepparton Bypass is vital to improving safety and accessibility across Greater Shepparton and the video is an excellent way for the community to gain a better understanding of where the bypass is planned to go. “The video not only identifies where

the bypass is proposed to join the existing Goulburn Valley H ighway, but also demonstrates the bypass’ intended route, the various potential points of entry and exit and the prospective location for the second Goulburn River crossing,” Cr Ryan said. Council is seeking an election commitment from both the State Government and the opposition to provide funding and support a request for Federal Government funding, for the staged construction of a two way, single lane carriageway bypass. A three stage construction program is sought, with the section between the Midland Highway and Wanganui Road being the immediate priority. Fresh fruit stronger than ever continued from front page

JEFTOMSON Director, Peter Thompson said, “Since 1949 we have been prevalent in the fresh fruit industry. “We’ve been finding with our company that if you do everything right then there will be more demand. “The supermarkets have been offering very high quality fruit because they have been very strict on companies like ours with quality requirements and particularly now, people are really trusting the fresh produce they get from the supermarkets. “Many years ago people would go to the butcher for their meat and the greengrocer to get their produce, now at least 70 precent of shoppers do it all in one spot, so they have a lot more trust in the fresh side of the business than they had when I was growing up. “Over the year we provide about 90,000 bulk bins to the supermarkets across Australia, which

has been constant for the past couple of years. “The demand for prepacked apples has been getting bigger and bigger. It’s actually been a very sharp increase and the volume we have been putting out has been increasing quite rapidly in the last five years. “Our business has grown a lot in the last five years and that obviously is due to an increase in the demand for fresh produce. “The quality of Australian produce is certainly as good as any in the world and we can make an excellent product. “Personally, I eat a lot of fresh apples and pears and would prefer fresh over canned goods. “Demand for fresh produce actually caused the apple and pear season to be expanded in Australia to run all year round now,” Peter said. Fruit Growers Victoria General Manager, John Wilson said, “In 2006 the apple and pear industry had to modernise and so we looked at how to maximise state of the art fruit growing for the Goulburn Valley and Australian

conditions. “Modern planting conditions now allow for a more efficient planting and growing process to accommodate the increased consumer response to healthy eating. “Between 55 to 60 percent of orchards have gone from growing 800 trees per hectare to now growing 3,500 trees per hectare and have gone from producing 30 to 40 tonnes per hectare to producing 80 odd tonnes per hectare. “Australia grows a very good product and people trust Australian freshly grown produce. There is still a market for processed fruit but it’s a changing market because the consumer is changing. “In saying there is a movement towards fresh, people don’t sit down as much to a can of fruit at the end of a meal, the eating habits of the Australia consumer has changed and transport and storage has changed. “The fresh market will continue to grow,” John said.

Budget offers $37M for capital works continued from front page VERNEY Road will also see an upgrade and $50,000 will be put toward the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton. In Tatura a $625,000 roof structure will be installed at Tatura Park to be used for events and provide an improved quality of infrastructure at the park. Works will be carried out at both Merrigum and Tatura pools, new public toilets will be installed at Ferrari Park in Mooroopna and for the first time, Toolamba will also be getting public toilets. $1,300,000 will be allocated for the Katandra West Community Centre, Congupna will see a walking track constructed and Lemnos Recreation Reserve will be allocated $29,000. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Jenny Houlihan said, “Overall we will see a 4.95 percent increase in rates and charges to have enough funds to pay for services and capital works that the community expect us

to deliver. “This number will of course fluctuate. Some people will actually be paying more than 4.95 percent so there is a big difference in what the rates are going to be depending on the category the property falls under. “This year is also a valuation year and depending on where people are in the municipality will also affect their rates. “We are trying to make sure the smaller rural communities know that we are working to help them.” G re ater S heppa r ton C it y C ou nc i l CEO, Gavin Cator said, “Four community meetings on the budget will be held in Tatura, Shepparton, Dookie and Mooroopna in the coming month. “There will be significant fluctuations across rate categories because of the implementation of the rating strategy, which is further complicated because it is a valuation year.” Mr Cator said.

Brides and M aids CELEBRATING

40 YEARS A WONDERFUL JOURNEY… Owner of Brides and Maids in Shepparton, Tina Rutherford is celebrating 40 years in business. Photo: Kelly Lucas.

O

WNER of Brides and Maids in Shepparton, Tina Rutherford has always been involved in local business here in the Shepparton area with her family, the Renatos who are synonymous with business in Shepparton. Tina began her working career at the Commonwealth Bank Australia many years ago when she left school before going to manage her brother, Lou Renato’s service station, doing his book work and running his business. Tina said, “I worked with my brother for approximately five years before I met a gorgeous man and I got married. My husband was the person who inspired me to start my own business. “In the beginning, I wasn’t sure what kind of business I should start, Shepparton seemed to cater for everything in those days, but once we began looking around I realised there were no dedicated bridal shops in Shepparton. I had enjoyed planning the details of my wedding so much that it seemed like an industry that I would really enjoy being a part of. With the support of her mother, Tina found the perfect site, opening the first Brides and Maids store in 1973 in the Star Bowl Arcade. Tina said, “The idea was simple, mum said we’ll buy fabrics, head gear and veils and bits and pieces, she would make the dresses and I would sell them in the shop. “Mum made all of the dresses on her own for the first two and a half years, before the business started to really outgrow our small store. “It was at this time that we were able to make contact with a manufacturer who created ready made bridal gowns. We explained that we had a small boutique and were interested in his garments, he sent us a sample selection of dresses to choose from and that was a real turning point for us. It was the best decision we made and really the start of much bigger things for us. “Our next move was to a larger premises near the Queens Gardens in

Page 14 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1204 Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Wyndham Street, Shepparton where the travel agency is now. From there the business grew and grew. The demand became more and more and things really started to take off. It was also during this period of time that my husband lost his battle with cancer leaving me with three children. It was a very difficult time. “After that, we made the decision to move to a much larger premises in Wyndham Street, where RACV is now. The premises turned out to be too large and the upkeep and stresses we experienced at that time were overwhelming.” When Tina met her second husband, she was still grappling with the decision of whether to give up and close the business or not when the decision was made to move forward and find a new premises. Tina said, “My husband said to me, you’re not closing up, we don’t close, we don’t fail. “We started searching for a new premises and we discovered the High Street store. It had been empty for some time and was quite run down, so we put some work into it and renovated and it came up really well. “In 1993, with the help of my husband, his strength and support, we opened up the new store and began the process of restoring our beloved Brides and Maids and building it back up. “It’s been quite a journey. “Forty years is a long time, but it doesn’t seem that long. I’d like to thank all of the people who have supported me over the last forty years, my family and friends. We’ve had some fabulous customers and a lot of repeat business, watching debutantes become brides and then watching them go on to see their daughters become debutantes and brides. It’s been wonderful.” After 40 years, Brides and Maids continues today to be a well recognised and reputable bridal boutique delivering dream dresses to brides across the region.

TINA’S TIPS TO FINDING THE

Shop ahead of time

I suggest nine months is plenty of time to come in for bridal shopping. You can get all of your other bits and pieces done and then concentrate on the bridal gown as your main focus. If you shop too far ahead of time your body shape can change, your taste and style can change… it’s a risk. Nine months prior to your wedding date is the ideal time to start searching for your dress.

Time for alterations

Delivery on a bridal gown, if you’re not buying a gown from floor stock, is usually 12 to 16 weeks then we like to allow another six weeks from delivery date for fittings. So ideally, you need to secure your choice of bridal gown around six months prior to your wedding date.

Quality over quantity

If you are going to go bridal shopping you want to enjoy the experience, I would suggest to choose three reputable bridal stores. Stores which have been around for some time and who you can trust. This is important for two reasons, firstly, the more stores you look at the more overwhelming and confusing the choice becomes and secondly, your wedding dress is a big investment, it’s important and you want to ensure that your bridal budget is in safe hands with a store who can deliver. You don’t want to hand over $1,000 deposit and end up heart broken with no dress.

Limit your choices

It’s also a good idea to only try on a handful of dresses in one fitting. Choose a selection of dresses or styles which you like, then choose your favourites from the selection, that way you can more easily decipher your likes and dislikes and progress towards your dream dress without adding unnecessary confusion. Proper undergarments are also ideal.

Coles offers bigger, better range at new-look Shepparton store

COLES will offer Shepparton residents a bigger and better range when it officially opens its newlook supermarket at 9am on Wednesday, June 25. More than 130 Coles team members will work across the Shepparton store, following the appointment of an extra 20 new team members. Coles Shepparton Store Manager, Joe Tedesco said he was looking forward to welcoming locals into the updated store, which will introduce more than 600 new product lines across the store. “I am very confident that shoppers will enjoy our beautiful, reinvigorated store and will be very happy with the fantastic extended range of products on offer,” he said. “We think that locals will really embrace the various new and exotic food lines on offer. “We are also looking forward to offering great local fresh produce from long-standing producers in the region like Geoffrey Thompson Fruit Packing and Rocky Varapodio from Ardmona. All our Coles Brand tinned peaches, pears and apricots will also continue to be sourced from SPC.” Opening as Coles celebrates its 100th year as an Australian-owned company, the Shepparton store has undergone a major refresh, with customers set to notice the larger-scale fruit and vegetable selection in particular, as well as the change in aisle direction. The all-encompassing fresh produce section is to be displayed on ice, maintaining freshness for longer across a wide variety of fruit and vegetables products. The existing ‘Scoop and Weigh’ cabinet will remain, filled with a huge selection of nuts and dried fruit mixes just perfect for those lunchbox and work-day snacks. A gourmet delicatessen, complete with olive bar and fresh cheese selection, will provide shoppers with a range of new products to sample. Customers can also select from a wide range of pre-packaged deli meats, dips and antipasto products from the ‘deli-on-the-go’ cabinet. For those interested in a fresh juicy steak for dinner or a weekend barbeque, Meat Manager Peter Thomson and his team of in-store butchers now offer perfectly sliced beef on demand. Shoppers can also still find great affordable fashion pieces in-store, with the Coles MIX Apparel range transitioned to a more permanent location within the store. Coles Shepparton is located on the corner of Maude and Vaughan Streets, Shepparton and is open from 7am to 11pm, 7 days per week.

‘The Good The Bad And The Ethnic’ HOME GROWN ETHNIC COMEDY… Pictured, one of the stars of the upcoming show, ‘The Good The Bad And The Ethnic’, Joe Avati will perform with his peers in this side splittingly funny new show. Photo: Supplied

WITH an all-star line-up of some of the best home-grown ethnic comedy superstars, the brand new show, ‘The Good The Bad And The Ethnic’ promises to have audiences in stitches. From the producers who brought you the sell-out ‘IL DAGO’ and ‘Comicus Erectus’ tours, ‘The Good The Bad And The Ethnic’ is the next instalment of politically incorrect humour. Featuring a bumper-line up of the finest ethnic comedians including one of Australia’s top comedy exports Joe Avati, fresh from his sell-out Canadian tour; Turkish Australian comedy sensation Tahir, better known to most as ‘Habib’ of Fat Pizza fame; Australian Greek comedy sensation and best known as Memo from Acropolis Now, George Kapiniaris; and the talented Rob Shehadie, better known as ‘Rocky’ from Fat Pizza and Housos. Popular performer, Joe Avati said, “We have always had a loyal following from regional centres like Shepparton and we understand that not everyone can make it to the big cities to see the shows and we don’t want our fans to miss out so where possible, we bring the shows to the fans. “I am looking forward to returning to Shepparton with a brand new show. This is a show that our fans have never seen before so its exciting for us to showcase the changes and transition that we have made since the last time we were in Shepparton. “The show consists of an equal portion of live stand up, sketches, songs and video items. It’s fast paced and edgy. The show is clean and family friendly. The other comics I work with are amazing. I have learnt so much from them because of their diversity, courage on stage and talent. “This brand of humour appeals to people on a mass scale. Audiences can totally relate to our humour. Inspired by the song ‘I Am A...’ lifted from the ever-popular hit album ‘I Like To Sing’, the show will encourage young audiences to engage their imagination through words, song and movement. It’s just wonderful.” Set to a wonderfully colourful, craft-themed stage, the show will feature the familiar songs that kids know and love from all three of Justine’s albums; with an emphasis on a variety of instruments and sound, mostly ones you have on hand in your lounge room or even your toy-box! South America

Travelling to South America with Geoff Vallance ON the next leg of our journey, we were nearing Peru and we were getting excited about seeing the remains of the fabulous Inca Empire. Our first stop was Trujillo where we visited a major archeological site, this area predates the Incas and was built by the Mochie culture. Chan Chan is a massive temple and palace complex and was the capital of the ancient Chimu Empire. This UNESCO World Heritage site covers hundreds of acres, the huge palace site is incredible, the adobe structure just goes on and on and in the middle, a huge man-made lake which not only provided its water supply but was the location where the Mochie worshipped the reflection of the moon. Unlike our worship of gold for its dollar value the ancient tribes including the Incas only valued

Page 18 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1204 Wednesday, June 25, 2014

gold as a reflection of the sun and silver as the reflection of the moon. When the Spanish arrived all they were interested in was gold, the Incas had lots of it made into wonderful works of art that represented their worship of the sun, the Spanish looted it by the tonne and finding no value in its art melted it down into ingots to send back to Spain. That’s why today there is little Inca gold to be seen, most of what’s now on display in museums is from the Mochie Empire and has come from excavations on ancient burial sites, but the finds are vast. In Lima, the capital of Peru, I visited a private gold museum, it was more like a vast warehouse containing a huge collection of golden artifacts and later at the Larco Herrea Museum another collection of gold, silver and pottery from ancient Peruvian times. Our tour guide while showing us around talked of the way gold was used by the Inca elite in their everyday life to decorate their own bodies, and set them apart from the masses. But despite the best work of the Spanish to remove all the gold, our guide felt certain that the Incas would have left much of it still buried just waiting to be rediscovered one day. After all, the famed Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas remained concealed by the Spanish high on its mountain site until it was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911 and is now the major tourist site in Peru. I have been there on a previous trip and if ever there was a special place on this earth with the power to enchant you, virtually taking you back in time to behold the amazing works of a great culture, Machu Picchu is it. But the Incas were only part of the story, the Aztecs, Olmecs and the Mayan Empires also amazed their discoverers, I’ll have more to say about them in a future edition.

But it’s not all Indian culture in Lima, there is much to see and do, there are great restaurants for that taste of Peruvian cuisine. Take a walking tour of the city centre to its majestic squares, grand churches and a must do, the daily changing of the guard with all its pomp and ceremony. And Lima by night stages the most amazing water fountain tour known as the magic water circuit, you travel to 13 very impressive fountains that combine movement with light and sound to truly amaze you. Or if it’s wildlife viewing with a difference you want, then you can go by boat out to the islands. The Palomino Islands were host to a massive guano industry where companies mined the guano (bird droppings) for use as fertiliser, now the islands play host to massive colonies of sea lions and Humboldt penguins and a variety of bird colonies. The big sea lions stand their ground guarding their island space as the younger ones take to the water en masse to swim right up to your boat to take a very inquisitive look at you and if you want that up close experience you can don a wet suit and join them in the water. It’s quite a fishy experience but one that you will never forget as these acrobatic creatures swim past, over and under you as if you are their latest play buddy. And not forgetting the shopper in all tourists, Lima’s Inca Market has stall after stall of all things for the visitor, you name it they have got it in any colour you want. Alpaca everything is available from women’s shawls to men’s jumpers and if you go straight to the top of the range, baby Alpaca that extra fine, extra warm close weave that represents good value but it’s not cheap. We now move onto Central America and visit Ecuador, Costa Rica and Guatemala in our next edition of travel. Until next time, Safe Travel’n, Geoff Vallance. For all your travel needs see your local travel agent.

T h e te a m w e r e a w a r d e d a n ‘A P T Travelmarvel Cruising and Touring Diamond Partner’ for outstanding sales achievements in 2013 and were named as number seven out of the top 12 agents selected from across the whole of Australia for the honour. Lyn McNaught said, “The award was such an exceptional honour and such a big surprise for us. “The reason we have been so successful with APT is because it is such a good product, it is very well backed and our clients recognise that. A lot of our clients have done more than just one APT tour, not because we sell it and we say it’s good, but because they’ve experienced it and they know it’s good so they want to come back and do it again. “All of us here at Lyn McNaught have all travelled and experienced APT, we know the

product, we’ve experienced its value and we whole heartedly recommend it. “I’ve been in the travel industry for 43 years and our team have a total of over 100 years experience so we all know and value good travel tours and products.” APT Business Development Manager, Michael Stephenson said, “Being awarded a Diamond Agent is a really exclusive tier to reach and it’s fantastic honour for Lyn McNaught Travel.” Lyn McNaught said, “We have a wonderful team, but the thanks mainly goes to our clients. We wouldn’t be anywhere without our clients. “We only sell premium products, because we won’t put our clients money at risk, we only use trusted reputable products which are reliable and come from companies which we have very good working relationships with and APT certainly fits in with that mantra.” For more information, contact the APT Diamond Club team at Lyn McNaught Travel, 50 McLennan Street, Mooroopna or phone 5825 1866.

Preventative works could save you thousands THE local team at Solar City Pest Control is reminding their clients that winter is not the time to get relaxed about preventative pest control measures. Solar City Pest Control’s new Proprietor and experienced technician, Nathan East said, “This is the time of the year to be implementing your preventative measures, particularly in terms of rodents and termites. “During winter mice and rats are looking for warm nesting places, which are dry and cosy to escape the wet winter conditions. “This means your roof and wall voids become an attractive real estate option for rodents to set up house and increase their numbers.

“Our friendly team are available to come out and assess the situation, we will track where the rodents are coming from to find the source of the problem. You need to establish a tracking pattern before you throw baits around for the most effective method of removal. “Rats are extremely destructive, they have a single pair of continuously growing incisors, which require regular grinding. This grinding is usually carried out on your electrical wires, joists, walls or any course materials within your walls or roof. It’s vital to get onto rats early to prevent potential damage. “While termites slow down in winter, it’s important to start tracking and baiting them during winter to prevent explosions in activity during the summer. “Termites are a constant threat to homes, they are small and inconspicuous so left untreated they can often cause extensive damage before the occupant even knows that they are there. That’s why regular inspections and preventative treatments are so important.

FRIENDLY SERVICE… Solar City Pest Control believe in offering a down to earth, friendly service with real advice. Pictured, Director/ Technician, Nathan East. Photo: David Lee.

“It costs very little to carry out preventative works in comparison to the thousands that it costs to repair untreated pest damage.” For more information or for all of your pest control needs, contact the friendly team at Solar City Pest Control, 34 Old Dookie Road, Shepparton or phone 5825 4000.

Cruise on into 2015 ACCORDING to local travel professional from TravelManagers Australia, David Brown, cruising is becoming increasingly popular among Australians as a preferred mode of travel. David said, “A record number of cruises were booked in 2013, a staggering 833,348 which is approximately 3 percent of our population. What is also interesting is the destination growth in 2013 compared to 2012. In 2013 cruises in Europe increased by 34 percent, South Pacific increased by 30 percent, Asia increased by 27.80 percent and River Cruising increased by 25.10 percent. “This may be due to expansions in tours across the globe, for example Europe River Cruising has expanded to many more countries and become more regional, which means tour/cruising now operates through Spain to Portugal, Amsterdam on the Rhine, Rhone onto South of France, Lyon to Avignon, Russia from Moscow to St Petersburg, the Danube from Germany through to Budapest as well as shorter more leisurely cruises with tours of the towns and cities along the River. “There has also been an expansion of cruise availabilities along rivers in the USA including Mississippi, Canada including Saint Lawrence River, South America including the mighty Amazon, China on the Yangtze, Vietnam-Cambodia on the Mekong River and of course the Nile in Egypt.

Sports briefs Shorty in a stable condition

Benalla Football Club legend John ‘Shorty’ Martiniello is lucky to be alive after suffering a heart attack while umpiring the reserves match at Rochester on Saturday. Martiniello was air-lifted to The Alfred hospital and remains in a stable condition. The Saints Senior Assistant Coach has the quick response from Rochester runner Athol Hann to thank for saving his life along with the availability of a defibrillator. He is expected to return home later this week.

Kyabram premiership player Nick Holman was the toast of his Carlton team-mates after helping the club’s VFL team to a thrilling five point win on Sunday. The teenager, drafted to Carlton, after starring in the Bombers drought breaking premiership win last year kicked a goal with less than a minute to play against Bendigo Gold. Holman is not far away from hopefully making his debut with the senior team.
