By David Lee THIS year’s Dookie Wine Show finished with a ‘wowing’ end when over 200 people filled Shepparton’s McIntosh Centre last week, for the GOTA FE Dookie Wine Show Masterclass Awards Dinner. T he dinner, which saw GOTA F E Ho spit a l it y, C o oker y, Event s a nd Tourism students prepare a six course degustation menu, accompanied by the announcement of this year’s Wine of the Show winner, Mitchelton Wines for their 2013 Blackwood Park Riesling. Mutli-million dollar projects to freshen Shepparton By David Lee PLANS detailing an improved CBD will be the next focus of the Make Shepparton Greater campaign, with the attention hoping to secure funding from the State Government to help with the revitalisation.

The plan consists of three projects including the court precinct redevelopment, which has already had $73M secured for the project, the railway station precinct development, which will come to an estimated cost of $2.5M through the construction of a pedestrian

bridge that will provide direct access between the railway station and the CBD and the Vaughan and Maude Street redevelopment, which follows on from the completion of the Vaughan Central redevelopment and will come Continued on page 12 at a cost of $5M.

Wine show awards dinner wows attendees DOOK IE Wine Show Chairman, Paul Phillips said, “The presentation, table set-ups and atmosphere of the evening was outstanding. Claire Taylor from GOTAFE did a sensational job. “The hospitality and kitchen students put together an absolutely fantastic meal and to serve the amount of people that they did at an event like that proves that GOTAFE is teaching their students how to be successful. “The wines were well received by the crowd and there was an element of surprise on the evening, when Geoff Adams announced that the Wine of the Show went to Mitchelton Wines. “We were pleased with the numbers of entries we had this year and the quality of those wines,” Paul said. GOTA FE Commercial Manager Hospitality and Baking Department, Ross Graham said, “This year’s event saw an amazing presentation of the McIntosh Centre and was the perfect celebration of amazing regional wines that had been matched with regional foods prepared by Executive Chef, Gracie Sharwood from The Aussie. “The hospitality, events and cookery staff and students provided exceptional service and portrayed high quality skills, ably lead by Claire Taylor. “The opportunity for the students to participate in a two phase event, which included the wine judging as well as the awards dinner night and provided an opportunity to experience industry standard events. “We look forward to doing it all again next year,” Ross said. Local Resident, Justine Ryan attended the awards dinner, telling The Adviser the night was spectacular. “The food was absolutely outstanding and to have it matched so well with the award winning wines really made the meal. “The decorations and overall ambiance of the night was just fantastic and I am definitely looking forward to next year’s event.”

Lake gets a ‘trout load’ of fish By David Lee THERE was nothing ‘fishy’ about the bright and colourful smiles on the faces of students from Verney Road School, who last week helped to release 500 Rainbow Trout into Victoria Park Lake. As part of the government’s stocking program that aims to encourage families to go fishing, particularly during the school holidays, the advanced ‘yearlings’ are at a catchable size and are known for being relatively easy to catch due to them taking a variety of baits and lures. Department of Environment and Primary Industries Fisheries Officer, Anthony Wilson, said, “It was great for the children to be involved in the release. “Now that they’ve done something like this they’ll have an ownership over those fish forever. “Releasing the fish themselves they’re less likely to take advantage of this and in years to come it might lead them to take up a career in the fisheries research side of things or something in that field. “Rainbow Trout are also a good option for children or those trying fishing for the first time.

A HAPPY RELEASE… Pictured, Verney Road School Early Years Student, Tenika Carson releasing one of the 500 Rainbow Trout that were released into Victoria Park Lake last week. Photo: David Lee.

“These fish have been bred and raised at Snobs Creek Hatchery. “Anglers are reminded that a daily bag limit of five trout applies, and only two of those fish can exceed 35 centimetres. “If you are over 18, unless you hold a valid exemption, you require a Recreational Fishing Licence to fish. These can be purchased at a number of locations and online. “Fish stocking is funded by Victorian licence fees and the State Government’s $16M Recreational Fishing Initiative.”

Own your share of iconic pub history By David Lee IF you’ve ever wanted to own a pub or maybe just an iconic part of history, The Tatura Hotel is offering just that, announcing it is now taking expressions of interest from the community to purchase a $20 voucher. The idea, which came about due to the hotel wanting to construct a motel on the land they own, will see expressions of interest collected over the coming 12 months that could potentially see the sale of shares in the century old hotel. The Tatura Hotel Manager, Sue Ryan said, “We have a block of land out the back that we have building approval for and we are looking at building a motel. “We badly lack motel beds in Tatura and with all of the events the town has, there isn’t enough accommodation and so that’s how this came about. “This is an exciting opportunity for

anybody who may want to own a pub, or a piece of iconic Tatura history. “People can visit our website or come into the hotel and put in their expression of interest, which will help us gauge the response of this idea. “Depending on how many expressions of interest we get it has the potential to get to a point where we will be offering shares.

“Those who offer expressions of interest will get first dibs at the shares. “There will be benefits to shareholders including discounted meals and drinks as well as accommodation once the motel has been constructed. “It will be like nothing ever offered before.” For further information, visit www. taturahotel.com.au

LATEST BIT OF TECH LAUNCHED… Locals packed the Shepparton Marketplace Telstra Store on Friday last week, for a chance to get their hands on the latest bit of ‘tech,’ during the launch of Apple’s iPhone 6. Shepparton Marketplace Telstra Store’s Face of Apple, Jora Dhillon said, “To start with the numbers coming through the door were steady, but as the day progressed it got busier. It was hectic and much bigger than expected. The iPhone 6 has a faster processor, runs the new OS8, has a new and improved 8mp camera and boasts a new slimmer look with a bigger screen.” From left, Jora Dhillon and Shepparton Telstra Store Service Manager, Glen Kelly. Plans released to make CBD greater PICTURE PERFECT… An artist impression of the plans for Maude Street looking back toward the Maude Street Mall. Image: Supplied

Mutli-million dollar projects to freshen Shepparton CONSI ST I NG of fou r sub projec ts, the Vaughan Street and Maude Street redevelopment hopes to see the bus interchange relocated as well as the creation of a piazza, a new bus waiting area with weather protection and easier access to buses for the disabled and elderly, installation of public amenities including parent’s room and adult change facilities, bike lockers, and the improvement of the surrounding streetscape, parking and general amenity of Maude Street between Vaughan and High Streets. G re ater S heppa r ton C it y C ou nc i l Councillor, Fern Summer said, “The CBD revitalisation plan is a sorely needed upgrade to improve general cleanliness, improve parking and drive shoppers. It’s in the State Government’s best interest for Greater Shepparton to have a thriving retail space, we just need them to come to the party and offer funding, preferably before the election. “The new bus interchange will cater for more buses and we’re hoping the open space piazza (potentially with a playground) will encourage more people to travel via public transport. “We all know Shepparton’s rail services are abysmal, yet council is continually asked to provide proof that more services are needed. “This is a ‘chicken and the egg’ theory because we know from past experience that more services beget more use. This is the next best thing. The overpass will connect

the rail precinct with Vaughan Central and be a real feature for Shepparton.” Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry Executive Officer, Lucy Cerrone said, “The significant revitalisation plans are going to be great for business in Shepparton and really help to make the experience of visiting the CBD a pleasurable one, not just for locals but also for those visiting the town. “It is important that this project is undertaken and we hope the Government steps up and comes to the table with a significant contribution to help move the project along.” S h e pp a r to n S how M e M a rke t i n g C oord i nator, M at I n ne s - I rons sa id , “Vaughan Central has set the tone on the difference a change can make. “These plans would give businesses along Maude Street the chance to rejuvenate and to see them keep up with the times. “The traders should be excited for the future plans and although there may be a small upset during construction, it will all be worth it.” Commit tee for Greater Shepparton Chair, David McKenzie said, “I think it’s well recognised that our CBD needs revitalisation and attention to the built in environment is a big part of that. “C re at i ng l i n k age s to t he publ ic transport, and in particular the train station, will make it easier in getting visitors into the main shopping precinct. “The most important part of this project is that all of the key organisations in town are collaborating because getting a broad buy-in to a shared vision is what will make it all work.” Shepparton Transit General Manager, Trish Barr said, “We are happy about the plans to relocate the bus interchange. “From what I’ve seen of the plans, the facilities such as lighting, bus shelters and seating will be a lot better to what is currently available. Also the overall general cosmetic appearance of the interchange will be a vast improvement.” To have your say, council will be conducting video interviews with members of the community today in the Maude Street Mall between 11am and 2pm, Tuesday, September 30 in the Maude Street Mall between 11am and 2pm and Wednesday, October 1 on Vaughan Central between 11am and 2pm. The community can also vote to have a ‘Changing Places’ accessible toilet installed in the CBD by visiting www. changingplaces.org.au.

Find your best game GOLF is not only a fantastic sport for any person at any age, but it can also be good for your health. Walking an average course for a round of golf can be between five to seven kilometres and playing golf regularly can help you stay fit, improve muscle tone and endurance, lose weight and body fat and it’s also relaxing and very enjoyable. AAA Rated PGA Teaching Professional at the Mooroopna Golf Club, Chris Donovan said, “With the right use of technique, golf is a low impact sport which is easy on the body, which keeps you constantly moving and which is great fun to enjoy from a social aspect.” Chris said the most important thing to understand whether you’re a beginner or a regular golfing enthusiast is that correct form is key in preventing injury and improving form flexibility. “We specialise in helping our golfers, at all levels, develop correct form and posture to

optimise movement and motion capabilities. This not only helps to optimise flexibility, but also improves form and technique. “If the correct form is used, golfing related injuries are completely preventable, but it’s important for us to know if our golfers have any previous injuries to ensure preventative measures are taken to alleviate further strain. “Form and flexibility is not a prerequisite to enjoying golf. If you have limited movement you can absolutely develop it through training and technique. And this is the case for absolutely everyone, of any age and any ability. “Golf really is for anybody.” The Mooroopna Golf Club offer private golfing tuition as well as men’s, women’s and juniors clinics to help learn and improve technique. Food for thought IN today’s international food industry, the way we eat has changed profoundly from where we began. We no longer hunt and gather, our variety is abundant, our choices… endless. All of these things have impacted physical health and their effect on mental well-being is only now beginning to be fully realised. Highly-processed snack and takeaway food products, rich in tasty fat and sugar, have displaced much of the fruit, vegetables and other nutritious, unprocessed foods in our diets. Largely as a result of these changes, there has been a staggering increase in the proportion of overweight and obese people across many countries. Common non-infectious illnesses, many driven by poor diets, are now the leading cause of death worldwide.

Page 16 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1217 Wednesday, September 24, 2014

All of these factors combined may be contributing to the increasing numbers of poor mental health. In Australia, as elsewhere, nearly half of the population will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives. This means even people who are not personally affected are likely to know someone who has experienced depression, anxiety and even dementia. Research now suggests that depression and dementia are affected by the quality of our diets across the life course among other influencing factors. It’s becoming clear that common physical and mental illnesses co-occur and are likely mutually reinforcing. Obesity increases the risk for depression and dementia, while depression prompts obesity.

Heart disease is associated with depression, while worse outcomes face those with heart disease if they’re also depressed. Risk factors for heart disease are also risk factors for dementia. What all this means for general well-being is that improving lifestyle choices, both dietary and physical may very well work towards preventing and preserving your mental health in the future.

Supporting first home buyers and construction jobs in Shepparton FROM September 1, eligible Shepparton residents looking to buy their first home can take advantage of a 50 percent stamp duty concession under an incremental increase which has been gradually phased in over the past four years under the Napthine Government. Buying your first home is a big step and the 50 percent discount in stamp duty on properties up to the value of $600,000 makes home ownership more affordable, especially for younger Victorians living in

the Goulburn Valley region. For example, eligible first home owners in Shepparton will save up to $6,935 in stamp duty on dwellings valued up to $350,000. If purchasing a house and land package, Shepparton first homebuyers will also be eligible for an additional $10,000 first home owner grant for newly constructed homes. home living Spring time ‘DIY’ projects THERE’S nothing more satisfying than throwing your energy into a do-it-yourself home improvement project around the house, particularly now that the fine spring weather has arrived. If you choose the right kind of project and execute it well, you could even add value to your home. Here are some simple ideas to streamline or improve the space in and around your home: Boost Kitchen Storage - Whether your kitchen is large or small, ample storage is always a selling point. Take advantage of unclaimed wall or corner space with open shelves to keep dishes, spices, and cookware within easy reach. If you

frequently entertain, consider mounting a wine rack next to cabinetry. Restore Your Floor’s Shine - The versatility and warmth of a timber floor can add a beautiful feel to your home, but regular exposure to dirt, dust, and high foot traffic will leave it looking dull and distressed. Restore your floor’s shine factor by polishing with a product that is specifically designed for hardwood floors. A wooden floor should be polished once a year, and every four to six months in hightraffic areas of the home. Shed a Little Light - Beautiful light fixtures can go a long way in energising or soothing a space, and savvy designs can ease eye-intensive tasks. Successfully light a room by creating layers of light with task, accent, and ambient lighting. An interesting pendant or chandelier instantly boosts a room’s sophistication. Go Modular - Boost your blank wall’s style and storage capacity with a modular shelving unit. Various books and display pieces add colourful interest to white shelves in smaller space living rooms. Modular shelving is also a perfect fit for baskets, boxes, and bins to keep storage accessible yet out of sight. Add Some Greenery - A landscaped walkway is a small way to deliver big personality and keep your home fresh, lively, and inviting. Create natural beauty and texture along your front walkway or outdoor paths with an assortment of perennials.

CONTINUED STRENGTH… Chief Economist of Master Builders Australia, Peter Jones, is confident that residential building will continue to show strength after strength. Photo: Supplied.

Lift in approvals as house building gains strength ACCOR DI NG to Chief Economist of Master Builders Australia, Peter Jones, the association is confident of continued strength in residential building. “Approvals for July increased by 2.5 percent seasonally adjusted on the previous month bolstered by 9.4 percent seasonally adjusted rise in approvals for ‘other’ dwellings. “Builders will be encouraged that detached houses are taking over as the key driver of growth following some moderation in the

recent strong upturn in approvals for units. “In annual terms, approvals for private sector houses increased by 14 percent seasonally adjusted through to July while approvals for apartments were up by a more restrained 6.3 percent seasonally adjusted. “Indeed residential building recovery appears on track for an extended upturn given the underlying favourable dynamics of low interest rates, strong population growth and a deficiency of stock due to previous underbuilding.”

Libby takes ‘A Ride to Remember’ By David Lee IT’S an admirable way to honour the memory of her mother, Molly, and helping to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease is the reason that former local, Libby Day, cycled her way to Canberra as part of an 850km ‘A Ride to Remember,’ mission. Making a stop in Shepparton last week, the eight day trek coincided with Dementia Awareness Month and saw Libby, family members and friends start their cycle from Melbourne and finish up in Canberra yesterday in memory of her mother, who was struck by Alzheimer’s Disease. Libby said, “I am continually reminded how important this is because every person I meet these days has a family member affected by dementia. “The ride was great. It’s been very special because mum lost her battle with Alzheimer’s just four weeks ago. “It’s been a lovely thing we have done as a family and to be supported by my friends has just been magical. “Dementia is the third leading cause of

SHEPPARTON VS BENALLA… The Shepparton Swans will be taking on Benalla Saints this weekend at the Goulburn Valley Football League Seniors Grand Final match, after defeating Kyabram 117 to 67. Swans’ to take on Saints’ in Grand Final By David Lee IT was a tough match during last weekend’s game between Kyabram and the Shepparton Swans at Deakin Reserve, but it was the Swans’ who secured a place in the Goulburn Valley Football League Seniors Grand Final this weekend, defeating Kyabram 117 to 67. The Swans,’ who haven’t seen a grand final since 2007, will have some tough competition though, going head to head with the Benalla Saints, who earned their place in the finals after a bumper season playing back-to-back, undefeated games. Premiership success has been out of both teams reach for more than 30 years, with the Swans’ last tasting success in 1970, while the Saints’ haven’t flown a senior flag since 1973. Shepparton Swans President, Kevin Preece said, “We’re the only football team representing the City of Greater Shepparton on the day.

“It’s terrific and a great reward for a long hard season. “We’re excited about the coming weekend and can’t wait to get out there and put on a good show. “We’re cer tainly coming in as the u nderdogs. B ena l la a re t he r ig ht f u l favourites and in our last two encounters with them this year we were defeated. However we gave them a fright in the qualifying final three weeks ago and we’re confident that we can beat them in the Grand Final. “Grand Final week is a big thing for a club. We’d like to see as many of our current and past supporters to get behind the club, come along to training on Thursday night and come along to the Grand Final and enjoy the game. “We also have our A Grade Netball team in the finals this year so we’re hoping to come home with a couple of wins.”
