Relationship is puppy love By David Lee T H E r e l at io n s h ip b e t we e n G r e at e r Shepparton City Council’s (GSCC) Animal Shelter and Hunters Group is nothing less than puppy love, with the two taking it to the next level with help from Mars Petcare last week, when $1,204 worth of dog food was donated to the shelter. The 616kg of Pedigree dog food will go toward helping feed pooches staying at GSCC Animal Shelter and was brought about thanks to the Pedigree Adoption Drive, which has and continues to help thousands of dogs find loving homes by raising awareness of the plight of rescue dogs. Hunters Group Rural Manager, Laura Little said, “These types of initiatives are very important. We are big believers in adoption and in helping to save lives. “Hunters’ have been supplying council with food for the animal shelter for the past 3 years. We know the great work council’s animal shelter does and this only goes toward helping them continue that work and hopefully we help to save some animals along the way.” Area Sales and Training from Mars Petcare, Ben Wapling said, “It was Hunters’ who suggested we donate this food to the GSCC Animal Shelter. “T he Pedigree Adoption Drive is a

“This will go a long way to assisting the animals at the shelter. “We look forward to working with both Hunters’ and Petcare’ in the near future to help assist both the animal shelter and increase the number of animals adopted from the animal shelter throughout the year.”

Concerns grow for introduction of precommitment scheme
INTRODUCING PRE-COMMITMENT… Victoria will become the first state in Australia to introduce precommitment gaming systems on gaming machines, but not everybody is happy about it. Pictured, Shepparton Club General Manager, Don Field. Photo: Madeleine Caccianiga.
VICTORIA is set to be the first state in the country to introduce pre-commitment gaming machines into gaming venues, but there are some venues that are not looking forward to the forcible introduction. On December 12 last year a Gambling Regulation Amendment (Pre-commitment) Bill 2013 was passed, meaning that all venue operators will be required to link to a statewide pre-commitment system by December 1, 2015, with all gaming machines to be equipped with pre-commitment capability by December 31 this year. The pre-commitment system will see players who register for the scheme given a ‘player card,’ which can be used to store information on the player’s gaming activities and to apply specified time or spending limits. A card reader on the gaming machine will identify the player, track gaming activity and ensure any precommitment limits are kept in place. Shepparton Club General Manager, Don Field said, “Pre-commitment as a problem gambling support tool has its origins in behavioural theory. The theory is that by setting a limit, gamblers will be able to limit their spending. I stress ‘theory’ since there is
no evidence to support the contention that it will help problem gamblers. The only other jurisdiction in the world to introduce precommitment technology across an entire ‘estate,’ Nova Scotia, has withdrawn it, citing ineffectiveness in helping problem gamblers and curtailing the behaviour of others. “The major effect will be the wasteful cost of introducing it and these are costs that are borne by clubs. We estimate the capital cost to be in excess of $75,000 for our club, plus a further $15,200 per annum in fees to Intralot, the Licensed Gaming Operator. “For the Shepparton Club, it will mean we have to look much more closely at expenditure. As a not-for-profit community organisation, we support many local clubs, sports, etc in addition to providing for our members. Additional expenditure of close to $100,000 in year one of this programme will cause us financial hardship and we shall in all likelihood need to scale back some support. “The one positive about pre-commitment may be that a person who wants to change their behaviour might use it to help them achieve that; we shall do all we can to assist, too.”

Anson’s latest novel touches on ties to Shepparton By David Lee SHEPPARTON born Author, Anson Cameron has just written one of his best works according to reviews, and although his latest novel is largely centred around South Australia, the New South Wales outback and Queensland, Anson’s ties to Shepparton are still largely prevalent in the book. The Last Pulse is the story of the last flood that will ever flow down the inland artery that was the Darling River after Merv Rossiter, inspired by the death of his wife, decides to steal a boat and travel from his drought-stricken Riverland town of Bartel in South Australia to Waroo Station, with his daughter to blow up the dam, releasing a flood through outback New South Wales into South Australia. Latest stats reveal vacancy rates down AN audit carried out in November has revealed that the rate of vacant shops in Shepparton’s CBD has dropped by 12 compared to an audit carried out in August. Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Investment Attraction, Geraldine Christou said, “There are currently 70 shops vacant within the defined CBD area, which is down 12 shops from the last audit conducted at the end of August
2014, where 82 vacancies were recorded. “The streets with the greatest change in vacancy rates were High Street and Wyndham Street. “The drop in the vacancy rate at this time of the year is similar to what has occurred in previous years. “The lowering of the vacancy rates indicates confidence in Shepparton as a retail precinct.
“This is particularly pleasing as the Renew Shepparton initiative, a collaborative campaign between Council, Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Shepparton Show Me and the Committee for Greater Shepparton, is scheduled to commence soon.”

Access Travel Pass

By David Lee AFTER months spending $33 for a return trip to Melbourne to attend doctors appointments, local resident, Nikki Burgess happened upon a free travel pass which she says isn’t widely known about. Provided by Public Transport Victoria (PTV), the Access Travel Pass authorises free travel on public transport services within Victoria and is available to Victorians who use public transport services who may have a permanent physical disability, cognitive condition or mental illness that prevents them from using an electronic, or smartcard based, ticketing system. contract or service agreement with Public Transport Victoria. Nikki said, “I travel to Melbourne three to four times a year to attend doctors appointments and am awaiting surgery, but it was costing me $33 for a return ticket and then if I had to travel outside of zones covered by the ticket, I would then have to purchase a Myki as well. It all adds up. “I wasn’t aware of any current free passes that are provided but I did know that many years ago there was a free Sunday service that allowed pensioners or people with a disability to travel. “I decided to search on Google and happened upon the Access Travel Pass on the PTV website. “I found it interesting because even Centrelink didn’t seem to know about it. “There are others who travel more frequently than I do to Melbourne and other areas to attend doctors appointments and this pass would benefit them greatly. “I just want to get the information out there to others so that they are aware this service does exist.” To find out more about the Access Travel Pass, visit www. ptv.vic.gov.au

Iconic images of Australia on show ICONIC photos by Australian Photographer, Rennie Ellis covering the 1970s to 1990s, will be on display at the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) from Friday this week, when the summer exhibition, The Rennie Ellis Show will fill the museum’s art space. Defining images of Australian life including the periods of Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser, Paul Keating and Bob Hawke as well as AC/DC and punk rock, cheap petrol and coconut oil, Hare Krishnas, hookers and deviates balls, The Rennie Ellis Show exhibit will be officially opened by Director of the Rennie Ellis Photographic Archive, Manuela Furci on Friday, December 12 at 6pm and will be open to the public until Sunday, February 22. SAM Director, Kirsten Paisley said, “The work of Rennie Ellis is no doubt viewed differently in retrospect than it would have been in its day. “He has provided a documentary archive of Australian life and the idiosyncrasies of human behaviour through a series of encounters with other people’s lives. The results are entertaining as ever, and now, deeply nostalgic.” Monash Gallery of Art’s (MGA) Stephen Zagala said, “As the home of Australian photography, MGA is pleased to have developed this important exhibition from one of the greats of Australian photography. “Photography has changed so much over

By David Lee A SPECIALISED response service designed to provide staffed safety vehicles during peak periods in support of cab drivers and the taxi travelling public in Melbourne, Tiger Team, took some time out last week to visit clients at Shepparton Access. Tiger Team was created in response to the increased number of assaults and violent attacks on Melbourne cab drivers and was launched by 13CABS as a direct response safety vehicle initiative. The visit, which was also brought on due to the service being looked into to be utilised in Shepparton during larger event times to keep the public safe, was also made
all the more important for Shepparton Access clients due to the large number of instances when they utilise a taxi service. 13CABS Driver Services, Chris Culph said, “Greater Shepparton Taxis has grown a lot over the years, to the point where we are actually answering their phones and taking bookings for them. “The team was trialled in Melbourne two years ago and it has been very successful. “This Tiger Team vehicle would be a good thing for certain events that run in Shepparton. It was designed to help keep the streets safer, resolve issues, get people home safely and save police dealing with smaller incidences.”

Driving L2P program forward By David Lee A GENEROUS donation and the receiving of an outstanding volunteer award is helping to drive the L2P Learner Driver Program forward, continuing the second to none work that the program and its volunteers give to the community. As a mentor in the program since 2010, Shepparton L2P program Volunteer, Leo Houlihan was recently awarded the Selina Sutherland Outstanding Volunteer Award, which complements the recent donation of a new car to the program by Goodfellows Car and Truck rentals. Leo said, “Receiving the award gives both the program and those completing the program recognition. “We’d like to thank Goodfellows Car and Truck Rentals, the combined rotary clubs of Shepparton as well as our other sponsors for their generous support, without it this program wouldn’t be as successful.” L2P Learner Driver Program Sponsor, Graeme Goodfellow from Goodfellows Car and Truck Rentals said, “My parents were driving instructors and started their business in 1964 and then, along with my brothers, were instructors at DECA so it made sense for us to donate the car. “This is really the least I could do. Shepparton has been good to me and I just wanted to give something back.” Berry Street L2P Project Coordinator, Bill Winter said, “Leo has shown incredible passion and commitment to the program, and has been integral in assisting 76 young people in the Goulburn Valley on their journey to becoming safe, licensed drivers.

Investing in the future locally NATIONAL Australia Bank (NAB) Limited CEO, Andrew Thorburn and his executive team paid a special visit to Shepparton during the week to meet with long standing customers, staff and community members and to officially open the brand new look Shepparton branch. The newly unveiled $2M upgrade of the Shepparton branch includes the latest technologies and a whole new fit-out including smart ATMs, which can accept cheques as well as a 24 hour foyer available for customer convenience. NAB Regional Agribusiness Manager for Central Victoria, Dave Davies said, “Shepparton is one of the largest regional business towns for us, it encompasses all of our NAB brands and employs 65 staff members. “The technology and the layouts which
have been installed are the most up-to-date, there are branches in Melbourne which do not have these technologies, which is an indication of how important Shepparton is to us as a regional centre.” NAB CEO, Andrew Thorburn said, “We are serious about being in Shepparton, we are serious about our customers needs and we are putting our money where our mouth is and investing in our future in Shepparton.” The regional tour consisted of stop offs in Ballarat, Bendigo and Shepparton over a three day period, providing the executive team the opportunity to meet with staff, meeting with longstanding clients, meeting and engaging with community leaders before enjoying a gathering with clients in the evening to acknowledge and thank them for their loyalty. Andrew said, “Our executive team want to spend more time with our people and with our customers and these trips to our regional centres are an opportunity to do that. “It’s a really great way of staying

It’s relatively informal, we call it ‘NAB conversations’ which simply offers an opportunity for us to listen and engage with people. “One of our goals is to become Australia’s most respected banks and we want to earn the respect of our customers and the community. In banking, you can really help
people manage their money better and make a difference in their lives. “To save, to set goals, to start businesses, to keep them healthy, to grow them, to give advice about directions and structure… We don’t just lend money, we try to help people to succeed.”
Tears and joy of a first Christmas
Gifts, family traditions and festive outfits continued from front page “I think we will be starting our own Christmas traditions together but I am looking forward to watching Carols by Candlelight on Christmas Eve like I used to with my parents. “I think if his poppy had anything to do with it he would be all decked out in Christmas outfits, but I think we will just stick with a Santa bib (which his poppy already bought for him). We are all excited to spend his first Christmas with him.” Mathieu said, “I’m looking most forward to the gift giving and unwrapping of presents…provided he hasn’t got to them beforehand. “This year we’re getting him a sand shell, swing, Duplo…lots of Duplo for William…and Dad.

“We don’t really have any family traditions to pass on yet. Maybe, not getting up until mum and dad are ready. “We have dressed him in a Christmas hat, but both my wife, Justine and I have novelty hats.” Alicia said, “I’m most looking forward to seeing whether Ella gets more excited about the Christmas paper than the presents. Also seeing her play with her cousins. “We’re getting Ella Christmas paper and empty boxes... just kidding...we haven’t decided yet, possibly a fun toy or nice Christmas book. “I’ll be passing on our traditions of lots of eating and laughing, but will be looking forward to maybe teaching her that Christmas is more about giving than receiving. “We will be dressing her in a pretty dress and headband, no Santa or elf outfits...unless someone buys her one.”

TAKING a photo with Santa has been around in the region for 38 years and Santa Photo instigator, Dale Wright decided to share some of the photos he has collected including one of the Bentley family and some of his son Stuart, but the twist is that 36 years later, Stuart hasn’t changed a bit.
INTRODUCING SANTA… Pictured, two year old Stuart Wright with Santa in 1980. Stuart doesn’t look too impressed (left), much like the counterpart photo of Stuart with Santa last week (right). Photos: Dale Wright Photography.
‘GOTCHA’ NOSE… In 1981, one year since his first Santa photo, Stuart now seems a little more comfortable and even touches Santa’s nose (left), but today, it seems Stuart is still happy to play ‘Gotcha Nose’ (right).
TELL SANTA YOUR WISH LIST… Another year on, 1982, and Stuart is now more than happy to sit on Santa’s knee (left), but you’re never too big to tell Santa what you want for Christmas (right).

THERE’S plenty of magical moments to enjoy at the Shepparton Marketplace this festive season including the opportunity to visit with Santa right up until Christmas Eve. Shepparton Marketplace Centre Manager, Don Butler said, “Christmas is a very special time for us here at the Shepparton Marketplace and we have some extra special activities to share with families and to help spread the Christmas cheer. “Families will be able to visit Santa’s House right up until Christmas Eve from 11am daily with Santa Photos available from Monday to Thursday between 11am and 4pm, Fridays between 11am and 4pm and also between 5pm and 7pm and then on Saturdays and Sundays between 11am and 3pm. “We are proud to show our support to those less fortunate again this Christmas with proceeds from our gold coin gift wrapping services going to the Leukaemia Foundation. “We are also proud to be a part of the Community Giving Tree program and encourage people to place an unwrapped
gift under one of the trees located here at the Shepparton Marketplace, at the Riverside Plaza and or at the Maude Street Mall to be donated to the local community through The Community Fund Goulburn Valley. “This year we are excited to introduce our Gingerbread House Decorating Competition. We will have a small Gingerbread Village on display from Friday, December 12 until Christmas Eve. Our tenants and employees have been busy baking and decorating their gingerbread creations to display in the centre over the busy period and shoppers will have the opportunity to vote for the best Gingerbread House by placing their vote in the entry barrel at the display. “On behalf of all of us here at the Shepparton Marketplace, we wish all of our local families a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.” For more information about any of the Christmas Activities available, check out the Shepparton Marketplace facebook page or call into the Shepparton Marketplace, open 7 days for your convenience.
Christmas songs Your favourite revealed ACCORDING to research undertaken by Australian Hearing, the nation’s favourite Christmas carol for 2014 is Silent Night, with the traditional tune knocking more contemporary songs such as Last Christmas, for six. According t the research, almost half the nation (44 percent) chose Silent Night as their most-wanted Christmas track, with Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Jingles Bells in joint second place and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and O Come All Ye Faithful following respectively. Over 1,000 people surveyed nationally shunned contemporary Christmas songs, such as Last Christmas, Do They Know It’s Christmas and The Fairytale of New York,
in favour of time-honoured golden-oldies. However, those aged between 18 and 24 years old chose Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You as their top song. The Australian Hearing research also revealed that Christmas songs were the top sound that Australians look forward to on Christmas Day followed by children’s laughter, with the tearing of wrapping paper opening presents in third place. One fifth of men said their favourite sound was the opening of a can of beer. The sounds that Australians would miss the most at Christmas if they couldn’t hear were children’s laughter followed by Christmas songs, with the sound of Jingle Bells in third place.

ENJOY THE TRADITIONS OF CHRISTMAS… The Show Me Christmas in Shepparton campaign has kicked off with even more chances to meet and get your photo with Santa, enjoy fun activities and win prizes. Make sure to visit Santa at Santa’s Workshop in the Maude Street Mall right up until Christmas. Photo: Madeleine Caccianiga
Show Me the
magic of Christmas, present and past SANTA’S Workshop officially opened in the Maude Street Mall on the weekend, with boys and girls welcoming the chance to meet with Santa and get a photo. This year, boys and girls will have even more opportunities to enjoy the traditions of Christmas with the very special ‘blue’ Show Me Santa Claus celebrating Christmas across the city with loads of giveaways and fun activities. In times past, many European countries celebrated a midwinter event called Yule. Numerous traditions have been absorbed over time from Yuletide celebrations into the modern Christmas we know today including that of the god Odin. Odin wore a blue-hooded cloak, he had a white beard and was the ‘gift-bringer’ of the north, who rode the midwinter sky on his eight-footed steed, Sleipnir, visiting his people with gifts. If theories are anything to go by, then Odin may have been our very first Santa Clause in blue. The ‘red’ and ‘blue’ Santas are a part of the Show Me Christmas in Shepparton campaign, which began at the beginning of December
encouraging shoppers to experience the magic of Christmas in Shepparton. S he pp a r ton S how M e M a rke t i n g Coordinator, Mat Innes-Irons said, “You’ll see the ‘blue’ Show Me Santa Claus out and about everywhere, so make sure to stop and say hi for some great giveaway opportunities. “We’ll be doing two main giveaways everyday across the city including at the Riverside Plaza, Shepparton Marketplace and Vaughan Central with plenty of opportunities to win some fantastic prizes on the spinning wheel. “The ‘real’ Santa will be available for photos at Santa’s Workshop in the Maude Street Mall Monday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm. We also have our charity gift wrapping crew set up in Santa’s Workshop and they’ll wrap your gifts for a gold coin donation which goes to local charities and our Giving Tree, where families can support the local community through the Community Fund Goulburn Valley.” For more information, check out the Shepparton Show Me Facebook page for activities and locations.

SEASON OF GIVING… From left, Kmart Extended Trade Manager, Michelle Hargreave, Store Manager, Nathan Battle and Extended Trade Manager, Sam Pell. Photo: Madeleine Caccianiga.
Nothing like
the gift of giving THE season of giving is upon us and in spirit of giving to those less fortunate, Kmart together with The Salvation Army have launched this year’s Wishing Tree appeal. Running for 27 years, the appeal has seen more than six million gifts collected and last year brought smiles to the faces of more than 1,400 locals. Kmart Shepparton Store Manager, Nathan Battle said, “We’re looking at collecting 1,500 gifts this year, which will be the most we’ve ever collected. “We’re off to a flying start so far, which is good. “We really want to engage the community
as much as possible. “There are a lot of people who need the support of The Salvation Army, who do a wonderful thing for the community. “Gifts can be for children or adults. They don’t necessarily have to be purchased from Kmart and they don’t have to be wrapped. “This year people can also take a gift tag through the registers and make a cash donation to The Salvation Army, which is something that was not previously possible,” Nathan said. The 2014 Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal will run until Christmas Eve and this year aims to collect more than 500,000 gifts nationally.

Family fun
Christmas games LOOKING for something a little different to do on Christmas this year, why not try out some family fun Christmas games that will keep everyone entertained and laughing all day long. • Family tree - This game will only work if you have someone in your group who is an incredibly good sport. The idea is to decorate a person as a Christmas tree. The willing victim must stand still as all the kids in the group decorate him (or her) with decorations made from red and green crepe paper, aluminum foil, paper, candy, bows, leftover wrapping paper and whatever else you can find. The end result? Hilariously good family fun! • Christmas trivia - Does your family know everything there is to know about Christmas? Why not challenge the clan to a Christmas trivia showdown? Pull out some Santa trivia, Christmas tree trivia, or trivia about Christmas traditions from around the world — or go for the gold and mix up questions from all three. You can have a dedicated game time where players compete for a prize (extra dessert!) or just ask the questions throughout the day to keep everybody guessing. • Christmas song Pictionary - Is your family fond of picture games? This game is a lot like a regular game of Pictionary, but with a festive twist. Write down the names of every Christmas song you can think of and put them into a box (or Santa hat). Break up into teams of two. One person from each team takes a turn pulling out a Christmas song name from the hat and trying to draw it, while the other person tries to guess the name of the Christmas song. The team who guesses the fastest, wins.

advantage WHEN local Shepparton girl, Kristina Marko completed year 12 from Notre Dame College, she had a world of options available to her. Having already been accepted into RMIT Criminal Justice and with a clear idea of her vocational interests she thought her decision was made. Kristina said, “During the Change of Preference period I reconsidered and made the decision to stay and study locally. Law and Accounting were two areas I was always passionate about and I decided that studying Business (Accounting) in Shepparton meant I would have the flexibility to study and work locally in my home town and be home with my family and friends. “The following February I started studying a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) full time. After completing my first year and doing quite well the opportunity arose for part time work at a local accounting firm, Stubbs Wallace. I seized the opportunity and obtained an accounting traineeship, which meant three days work a week. I was at the firm for three and a half years and it was the best decision I made, as it allowed me to take theory learnt in lectures and apply it to real life situations. “I graduated in 2012 with valuable work experience behind me and this was a great advantage in applying for jobs. “After submitting my application, I was accepted into a boutique accounting practice in Kew, Melbourne where I worked with clients including high net-worth individuals, trusts and special projects. From this experience I was able to receive city and regional experience. “Eventually, I came to a crossroad in my career where I realised accounting was not for me at this stage. I wanted a job with more people contact and I’m fortunate that my degree has given me the foundations for jobs in any area of business. “Whilst I loved Melbourne living, being away from my roots helped me to appreciate the opportunities I had in Shepparton, which a lot of us as young people take for granted. “I chose to further my study with a Masters of Business Administration at La Trobe University Shepparton campus as I love to learn and I feel at home at the Shepparton campus. “I am very passionate about promoting education and La Trobe’ in Shepparton and the benefits of studying and working locally. “As for advice to others; check out all your options, but you should definitely check out your local study options here at La Trobe University Shepparton campus. You can still have the Melbourne lifestyle on the weekends but don’t dismiss or take for granted the opportunities here at your doorstep.”

Nathan takes on ‘Tigerland’
TACKLING THE TIGERS… Local Murray Bushrangers midfielder, Nathan Drummond (pictured) has been selected by Richmond with its third pick in the 2014 National Draft. Photo: AFL Media.
LOC A L rising Murray Bushrangers midfielder, Nathan Drummond has managed to impress the big leagues, being selected by Richmond with its third pick (selection 52) in the 2014 National Draft. After a 2013 season interrupted by injury, the 19-year-old completed an outstanding 2014 season, winning the Bushrangers’ Best and Fairest award. Richmond Recruiting Manager, Francis Jackson, “Nathan missed out on being drafted in 2013 after an injury interrupted year, and returned as a 19-year-old this year. “His football improved dramatically, and he had a wonderful season culminating in him winning the Best and Fairest for the Bushrangers, as well as playing three games at VFL level with the Tigers. “Nathan is an outstanding athlete who possesses elite speed and endurance. “His work-rate in games is outstanding, and it resulted in him having some very high possession games. “He can play inside or outside as a midfielder, and is a very strong tackler.” Drummond said going through the disappointment of not being selected last year made this year extra special. ‘I’m really shocked, but not getting picked up last year makes it a bit sweeter. Drummond played three VFL games with Richmond during the year, which helped kick off his relationship with the Tigers. ‘‘I had the connection playing in the VFL and being around the place, but to finally get onto an AFL list, I’m just really excited. ‘‘It’s going to be a lot different playing AFL, it makes it easier and I’m looking forward to being around elite professionals every day,” Drummond said.
