By David Lee BEING together and sharing the Christmas spirit with others is what the festive season is all about and the 14th annual free Christmas For Those Alone lunch offers the community just that, but this year the luncheon will be held at its new location, the McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds. Beginning in 2000 with just 54 people attending the Senior Citizen’s Hall, the luncheon’s popularity has grown and now more than 300 people frequent the event that brings those in the community together who would otherwise spend Christmas alone. Those who attend will be treated to a two course, chef made meal, can enjoy a raffle and live music in an atmosphere that provides a sense of camaraderie. Continued on page 10

Family driven decision to step down By David Lee IT was a family driven decision for Primary Care Connect (PCC) CEO, Hamish Fletcher to step down from his role as of January 23 next year, but the 10 years of experience under the belt of current Deputy CEO, Rebecca Lorains has made her the perfect candidate for the temporary instatement into the role. Hamish said, “My main reason for leaving is that I have three small children, 6, 4 and 2 years old, and I am watching them grow at an alarming rate. One of my children starts grade one and another starts prep next year and I promised them I would be there on day one doing some reading in the classroom and just be more involved in the school community. “I’ve done over 20 years now in the community services field and have been with PCC for a total of five years. “I took over as CEO at fairly turbulent times and the agency really needed some clear direction forward and restructuring, so over my two years as CEO I have been there through the restructuring of our management group and because of that we are now a much more efficient and viable organisation. “PCC is a very diverse business. We have 20 odd different programs across primary health and community services. I’ve been active with state wide refugee health network and we saw an increase in the refugee nursing role here, which I am really passionate about so I was glad to have been in the role of CEO for that. I am very proud of the team and how we have been able to progress in the areas of drug treatment. We also work very closely with the Community Legal Service and through this partnership PCC will be able to increase its presence in court, which is a real step forward for PCC. We have a long history of people coming into contact with the justice system so to be able to build on that is important. “The advice I would give to the next CEO is that it is really important to know what your agency does, and what it does well and to really play to your strengths. Coupled with that there is a really big need to network and partner. “I feel confident that we’ve been able to move the agency forward so that the person who will come in to be the next CEO has the best opportunity to take the chances on offer now and to grow the organisation even more.”

4GX moves Shepparton forward as leading tech hub SHEPPARTON and Tatura have become one of five areas across the country to join Telstra’s 4GX mobile service, after Telstra launched the extreme speed service last week. When combined with the speeds associated with the National Broadband Network (NBN), the 4GX service will push typical mobile download speeds up to between 2Mbps and 100Mbps for customers with compatible devices – some of the fastest commercial mobile speeds in the world. The introduction of 4GX services will also mean increased capacity for the local Shepparton and Tatura mobile network, giving locals improved and more consistent data speeds. Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager for Northern Victoria and Sunraysia, Steve Tinker said, “Our customers in Shepparton and Tatura are relying on mobile connectivity more than ever. “Shepparton council is investing heavily in promoting the local area as an investment destination. The 4GX service will bring greater capacity to the mobile network locally, and further cement the city’s position as a regional tech hub. “This service will allow us to continue to offer our customers Australia’s most reliable mobile service that’s faster in more places. “As the first carrier to bring 4G mobile services to vast areas of regional Australia, we know how important high-speed mobile can

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dennis Patterson said, “This will be sensational for mobile internet users in general. “We have several major industries in the municipality that utilise mobile technology and this will allow them to be more efficient.”

No ‘hair-raising’ venture for
Apprentice of the Year
LOCAL Hairdressing Student, Danielle Pigatto (Rando) took out top honours in her craft recently, being named GOTAFE’s 2014 Apprentice of the Year for Shepparton and Seymour Campuses. Danielle joined 50 other pre-apprentices and apprentices in their first, second, third and fourth years of GOTAFE’s Seymour and Shepparton Campuses who were each awarded, and the twenty three-year-old hairdressing student and employee at Bright Eyes Hairdressing and Day Spa accepted the prize with her mother, father, husband and her employer there to support her. Danielle said she was thrilled to win the award, but still in shock. “I am over the moon to win. “It is such an honour to be given that title, it’s a big deal for me and I am very excited, very pleased and also very thankful. “It’s great to know that, although there are other good apprentices, the recognition is nice and it’s great for my career. “The next step would be to hopefully run my own salon and continue to gain experience.” Bright Eyes Hairdressing and Day Spa Owner, Rachel Wilson said, “This is a big honour for us and we are really proud of Danielle. She is very good at what she does and is a born leader.” GOTAFE Commercial Manager for Hair and Beauty, Kate Storer said, “It’s a pleasure to have students like Danielle in your class. And it’s even better to be able to reward them with an accolade like Apprentice of the Year. “Her receiving the award demonstrates to other students what they can achieve and inspires them to do more in their careers.”

President, Linda Davidson said, “Council approached us with the idea to take up the venue and due to there being no bookings over the Christmas period, we were lucky enough to secure it. “The kitchen at the McIntosh Centre is a bigger commercial kitchen and the parking will also be more adequate, which makes things a lot easier for us. “It’s great to have such a great venue such as the McIntosh Centre to allow us to continue to provide this wonderful service to those who would otherwise go without Christmas lunch or spend the day alone. “We are hoping that this new venue will end up being permanent from here on in. “For anyone who is on their own or may not be able to spend Christmas with their family, we encourage you to join us. The lunch is always a great day and everybody has a lot of fun.” A public transport service is provided by calling Linda on 0437 387 584. For further information, contact Peg on 5831 1485.

MURALS COMPLETED… From left, Ethnic Council of Shepparton Development Committee Officer, Khaluf Salin, Shepparton Police, Senior Constable Matthew Walker and local Artist, Tank. Photo: Kelly Lucas.
By David Lee AFTER more than eight months, the latest and final two of seven murals painted on the wall outside the Shepparton Police Station, relaying the important message of togetherness, are set to be completed by Christmas. Created in a bid to brighten the look and feel of the station and to illustrate the strong community involvement Shepparton Police have with the region, the final two murals, titled ‘We’re All the Same’ and ‘Family Violence,’ artistically communicate that regardless of age, wealth status or colour that we are all the same and should be united and that strong family relationships are important. The other five murals have seen a display of police associative programs and connections within the Greater Shepparton community including the Street Night Rider Bus, the Cool Heads program, Wipe Out, a mural on police in the community and an indigenous art piece which demonstrates the strong relationship between local police and the aboriginal community. Six of the seven murals were painted by local Artist, Tank, who is better known in the Greater Shepparton area as one of the artists who painted the Mooving Art pieces. Tank said, “We’re All the Same depicts a multicultural community and was put together with guidance from the Ethnic Council of Shepparton, and Family Violence depicts two children walking home together to symbolise the importance of good relationships between family members. “It’ll be good to see all of the murals finished off and completed.”
A N EW innovative concept in frozen desserts made from 100 percent Australian grown fruit has just been launched by SPC, after a trial of a fat-free and dairy-free Perfect Fruit frozen fruit whip last year, proved to be successful. More t h a n 4 0 0 of S P C ’s Per fec t Fr u it mach i nes have now been installed in hospitals, entertainment parks, cinemas, schools and universities across New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland and is available in a range of fruit flavours including strawberry, mango and mixed berry. Director of Marketing & Innovation at SPC, Sandra Pereira said, “Perfect Fruit is a great example of how SPC is transforming from a cannery to a modern snack food company. We’re excited to be delivering new, innovative ways to enjoy fruit on the go. “We spent years developing the world-first technology to create Perfect Fruit. So far, the feedback we’ve had from our customers has been overwhelming – we don’t actually have enough machines to meet demand at the moment. “We are committed to using only Australian-grown fruit for our Perfect Fruit product, and it’s not only Victorian growers that will benefit. Whether it’s a mango grower in Queensland or a berry grower in Tasmania, we’ll be looking for fruit growers from all over Australia to supply fruit to develop our new flavour ranges, which will change with each season.” To find the nearest Perfect Fruit location, find ‘perfectfruit’ on Facebook.
