“To hire 20 out of the 30 is a pretty good strike rate. Angie and the Fun City team have been very easy to deal with. “This is great for the region. With all the talk of unemployment levels, we’re glad to be helping out with that.” Fun City still have 40 positions remaining and are calling on the community to submit their applications to sheppjobs@funcity.com.au

Plaque in honour of Margaret Billingham returns By David Lee AFTER many years sitting as a vacant block, the land that once housed the Margaret Billingham Villas at Shepparton Villages’ Tarcoola residence has been reclaimed by the Shepparton Villages Board, allowing for the return of a plaque paying tribute to the late Margaret Billingham, which is also set to pave the way for a multi-million dollar development on the land. The 30 villas that once stood on the land were named the Margaret Billingham Villas in 1976 and until the buildings were demolished years ago, the original wooden plaque honouring Margaret stood on the site to pay tribute to the tireless work she did with the less privileged members of the local community. Shepparton Villages Board President, Stephen Merrylees said, “It’s very special that the board was able to reclaim the land back from the government because it fits in with our strategic plan for redevelopment. “Margaret worked hard with the underprivileged in the community so we believe that there should be something erected in her memory.” Shepparton Villages CEO, Kerri Rivet said, “It’s an honour to be able to celebrate Margaret’s life contribution to the community. She was such a compassionate person in helping the less fortunate and contributed so much. She was instrumental in the establishment of 30 flats for the elderly on the site. “We have put in the new plaque to recognise her contribution to the establishment of these flats but also to recognise all the work she has done throughout the community of Shepparton such as spending 22 years in the Shepparton Ladies Benevolent Society, over 18 years with the Royal Institute for the Blind Auxiliary and 27 years in the Agricultural Society of Ladies.” Former Greater Shepparton City Councillor, Bruce Wilson said, “There is no doubt that the 30 accommodation units making up the

villas provided much happiness for many people over 40 years. Today and into the future, this plaque will draw attention to the former Margaret Billingham Villas – but more than that, it will stand as an historic link for future generations.”
Local’s double artistry By David Lee LOCAL Artist, Jane Spencer is about to get her artistry ‘mooving’ after not only being given the opportunity to paint the Murchison Tomato Festa’s Mooving Art cow but also being chosen as the first artist to feature an exhibit in the Shepparton Art Museum’s (SAM) new community art space. On Saturday, March 14 Jane’s paintings, themed around local landscapes and floral images, will go on display at SAM for eight weeks and the following day she will be painting the Mooving Art cow at the Murchison Tomato Festa. Jane said, “Being chosen to paint the Mooving Art cow came about when the Mu rch ison Tomato Festa Com m it tee de c ide d t he y wa nt e d to h ave t hei r own themed cow and approached me to commission one at their event. “The new community art space upstairs at SAM is a great little space and it will be exciting to be the first to exhibit in that new space.”

40 years under the stage lights By David Lee IT has been 40 years since the amalgamation of The Shepparton Light Music Company and Shepparton Dramatic Society saw the creation of Shepparton Theatre Arts Group (STAG) and to help celebrate, the group will be putting on a grand 40 and Fabulous concert production that will take the community on a trip through the years. Held on July 11, 40 and Fabulous will run for just two big shows and will feature songs from the productions STAG have produced over the years including Tonight from Westside Story, One Day More from Les Miserables, a medley from My Fair Lady and Cell Block Tango from Chicago. STAG Life Member and Founding Member, Joyce Baker-Dawber said, “The very first STAG production was held in 1975 and was called No No Nanette. We had a cast of 30 to 35. We’ve certainly come a long way since then. “STAG is great because it involves people from all walks of life and all levels of talent and you really do become a family. “The group’s highlights have to have been receiving the Music Guild Awards, touring Guys and Dolls in Melbourne and we’ve done some really great plays like The Castle, Inheritance, Le Miserables and cutting edge plays like Equus. “On Tuesday, March 17 we will be holding an information and audition night for 40 and Fabulous and we encourage anyone who has had anything to do with STAG over the years to come along.” To attend the information and audition night, visit STAG’s The Bakehouse Blackbox Theatre, 16 Wheeler Street in Shepparton at 7pm on Tuesday, March 17.

Poppies a tribute to war affected MORE than 1,000 handcrafted poppies are making their way to Melbourne to be prepared to be displayed at Federation Square on Anzac Day as a tribute to those affected by war. Gathered with the assistance of Goulburn Valley Regional Library (GVRL), people from across the region handmade the poppies out of wool, fabric and felt to help the 5,000 Poppies Project creators, Lynn Berry and Margaret Knight reach their goal of collecting 102,784 poppies; one for every Australian soldier who has paid the ultimate sacrifice. As of February 21 this year the official total of poppies stands at 120,803. Lynn said, “After Anzac Day, we are planning to tour the project nationally from 2015 to 2018 with our ultimate aim being to gift the entire project to the Australian War Memorial for all Australians to enjoy.” GV R L Operations and Community Engagement Manger, Anne Tomietto said, “I have crocheted and knitted a variety of poppies and I am including a dedication to my grandfather. “My grandfather was able Seaman, Garth Woodgate number 20729. He served on a variety of ships including the HMAS NIZAM. He was a Seaman for 10 years and served between 1935 and 1945. He returned, but suffered from skin disorders throughout his life. He was a gentleman and spoke rarely about his service. He never marched on commemorative days or discussed his navy service. This was simply his way of managing his trauma and living a life. “This has been a great community and

COUNCIL ACCOUNTABILITY Dear Editor, I am pleased with the response from the many people who have said to me that an increase in the accountability of councillors to those who elected them is necessary. Clearly, the public appreciate knowing more about what their councillors do, including attending committee meetings, council briefings and events. Similar information is provided by other Victorian councils to their communities. With a new reporting template introduced for our councillors to use, there is now an opportunity for Greater Shepparton councillors to provide that information to the public each month, or from time to time, in the monthly Ordinary Council Agenda. It is their choice. To date three councillors have voted on two separate occasions to support this move towards increased accountability. They are Cr Polan, Cr Adem and myself. Yours sincerely, Cr Jenny Houlihan Greater Shepparton City Council
HERIATGE QUERY Dear Editor, I find it intriguing that local council can apply to demolish the barbeque shelter on the lake, and the male and female brick toilet buildings in Queens Gardens, both of which contain a Heritage Overlay, and are solid structures. In 1997 I purchased an old dwelling without Heritage Overlay. In 2011, considering redevelopment, I discovered that council had slapped a heritage overlay on it and a demolition permit would be
Page 8 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1240 Wednesday, March 4, 2015
required. A Council Planning and Heritage Advisor inspected the property and wrote, “It is considered that in this instance a refusal to allow demolition would cause an unreasonable financial burden on the land owner. Moreover the house has been extensively altered and there is little heritage fabric left.” Current amended guidelines now advise that redevelopment is not allowed, only renovation. What about the “unreasonable financial burden?” So it’s alright to knock down the barbeque and toilet blocks, whilst my property remains empty and eating up my retirement fund? I know that there are many people out there who have experienced similar frustrations from vexatious council departments, and I urge you to put pen to paper. Write to anybody and everybody you consider may be sympathetic to your cause. How can a government body alter a ruling and allow it to effectively cost an individual massive dollars and sleepless night? Just imagine if they were withdrawing funds from their personal bank account and not using ratepayer’s money. Now that would be interesting. Yours sincerely, Maggie Turner-Miguel Shepparton
INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2015 Dear Editor, On March 8, people across Australia will mark International Women’s Day (IWD), and in particular commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, which envisions a world where women and girls are treated equally to their brothers, husbands and fathers. While there have been many achievements in Australia over the past 20 years – in the last few months alone Rosie Batty was named Australian of the Year and Linda Dessau was named Governor of Victoria – there is still a long way to go. The gender pay gap is at 17.1 percent and women in the top levels of management are getting paid up to 45 percent less than their male colleagues. V i c H e a lt h’s N at io n a l C o m mu n it y Attitudes Survey on Violence against Women, released late last year, revealed some worrying statistics about Australians’ attitudes to gender equality in public life. 27 percent of Australians believe that men make better political leaders than women, a 4 percent increase since 2012. 12 percent of Australians believe that when jobs are scarse that men have more right to a job than a woman. And 5% of Australians believe university
education is more important for a boy than a girl. VicHealth focuses on preventing violence against women because it is a significant and preventable contributor to ill health. Over the last decade, we’ve built an irrefutable body of evidence on the health impacts and causes of violence against women. Sexist and violent behaviour is learned and it can be unlearned. International Women’s Day is a time to stand up and challenge attitudes, which work against achieving equality between men and women. Yours sincerely, Jerril Rechter CEO VicHealth
NEW ART GALLERY PROPOSAL Dear Editor, One reads of the many wonderful and beneficial innovations that will be available in our proposed new art gallery for the Greater Shepparton citizens and the council could be lauded for their vision, but I, and I suspect many more citizens, would appreciate the facility of an area/gallery set aside within the new art museum for the sole purpose of displaying the art works, including painting, sculpture, photography etc, of the many, many non-famous Greater Shepparton artists of all ages who would welcome, and I believe grasp, with great enthusiasm, an opportunity to share their art offerings with residents and visitors to Shepparton. Perhaps allowing a number of artists to exhibit a selection of their art works for several months then to invite another group of artists to do the same for the next period and so on. The artists, if they wished, could be on hand to introduce themselves and answer enquiries of their art. In Shepparton and the wider community there is a wealth of talent, which, I believe, the public would appreciate the opportunity to enjoy but does not have the convenience to view other than in art shows and competitions. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing for Shepparton to be able to offer its citizens and visitors an experience akin to the street artists of Paris, “Live on Gene Kelly,” and the opportunity to see the works of professional and amateur, gifted and triers, young and elderly artists of all mediums and perhaps foster an awareness by residents of their gifted neighbours and hopefully a wish to emanate them and perhaps find joy and satisfaction in their own hidden talents Yours sincerely, Wilf Lumley Mooroopna

THE region is getting revved up in anticipation for the opening of a collaborative exhibition between the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) and the Shepparton Motor Museum, set to cruise into town with a special opening Dream
Machines Motor Show and Street Party. While the exhibitions open to the public from this Saturday, the street party will run on Saturday, March 14 kicking off at 2pm with the Motor Museum’s Annual Motor Show

held at Emerald Bank Leisure Land. Visitors will see hundreds of vehicles on display inside and outside the museum, including the feature exhibition Dream Machines: The Cars. At 5pm, a large number of exceptional classic vehicles from the motor show will cruise over to SAM, lining Welsford Street for a celebration of the partnership between both Museums and Shepparton’s passionate car culture. SA M Director, Kirsten Paisley said, “These concept vehicles in the exhibit were commissioned by artists who had to draw what didn’t exist; an image of the motoring future. “There’s such an incredible car culture in Shepparton and the museum wanted to appeal to that and show the community works that they otherwise wouldn’t get a chance to see. “We are really excited to be having the first
ever street party at SAM. The front of the museum will come alive with the best examples of ‘50s and ‘60s car design, which visitors can enjoy while listening to the rock n’ roll tunes of well-loved performer, Mikelangelo. What a great opportunity to chill out and enjoy both the vehicles and the artwork that led to their creation. This event is truly for everyone.” Alongside a 10-week public program full of related workshops, talks and other events, the exhibition design at SAM integrates SAM Play, which will provide two thematic spaces that revolve around drawing activities developed by Drawing Wall Artist, Lee Ward. To purchase tickets to the Dream Machines Motor Show and Street Party, visit the Riverlinks Box Office in the Eastbank Centre, or via www.dreammachinesshepparton.com.au

Hard work pays off for Drummond Golf IT has been a big 18 months for the team at Drummond Golf in Shepparton, particularly for Franchisee, Lincoln Ferrari. Lincoln bought the franchise, one of the 50 Drummond Golf stores in the national chain, back in 2013 and relocated his family from Bendigo to Shepparton; grabbing with both hands, the opportunity to take the business to new heights, introducing a fresh and energetic new approach to Drummond Golf, Shepparton. A testament to hard work and dedication, Lincoln’s efforts have recently paid off and for the first time in the Shepparton store’s 29 year history the business has been recognised at Drummond Golf’s annual awards evening, held at the MCG Members Dining Room. The store received six nominations and took home three out of the six, with one of the awards being the most significant of the event, the Franchisee of the Year award, Lincoln said, “There’s been a lot of hard work over the last 18 months, particularly moving my family into a new community, it’s been really awesome to get some recognition.” Both full time Sales Assistant Roger Eddy and Franchisee Lincoln Ferrari were nominated for the Sales Person of the Year award, but unfortunately there can only be one winner, and the accolade was awarded to Lincoln. Lincoln said, “I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone - including not only our valued customers but also the local clubs too, for all their support over the last 18 months. Kevin Hicks Real Estate Director, Rocky Gagliardi has said, “This is a rare opportunity to invest in an estate so close to the CBD, just south of the broken river. It is an estate with lots larger than usual spread throughout, these sized lots are becoming more and more uncommon and harder to come by.” Your Land Director, Mark Erskine said, “We acknowledge that there are a few new developments occurring around the Shepparton and Mooroopna area but this is a particularly exciting opportunity because it already has so many existing amenities, including the plaza, waterways and sporting grounds; whereas many other developments are on outskirts of town and their amenities have not been built yet.” For more information on investing in your dreams at Kialla Green Shepparton, visit www.yourland.com or phone Rocky Gagliardi on 0407 826 542. new House&Land BUILDING MADE EASY… GMCU Branch Manager, Dallas Moore, Operations Manager, Peter Thomas and Loans Manager, Ken Kilsby have many years of experience and expertise in helping locals build their own home. Photo: Alicia Niglia.
Know how to buy your first home
Experience the
GMCU difference THE Goulburn Murray Credit Union have been assisting people to build their own homes for many years, ensuring simple and refined processes that mean building your brand new home could be as easy as visiting your local GMCU branch to discuss loan options. Shepparton’s GMCU Operations Manager, Peter Thomas said, “Building a home can be stressful, home builders don’t need added stress from their bank or financial institution, so the GMCU make the process as simple as possible. “Using a loan to fund your new home is done in stages, just like the builder will construct the home in stages. When each stage is completed (for example, frame or fit-out) the property is re-valued and this enables extra funds to be advanced from the loan. “Often a construction loan will start as a loan to buy your land, and will be increased when you start to build. Applying for a construction loan is just like applying for a normal home loan. You need to complete an application and supply personal details about your finances and income. You also need to provide details about
Page 4 – The Adviser, New House & Land – March 2015
the construction, such as plans and permits. “It is important that you prepare a personal budget that includes all the construction costs and allows for unexpected or unplanned costs within it. “A home loan application should be made and approved prior to engaging a builder to build your new home, this will give you peace of mind that your finance has been approved. Peter added, “I invite anyone considering a new build to visit one of our branches to discuss the GMCU’s construction loan option. “GMCU loans are not available through brokers, so we urge people to ask us about the credit union difference.” The GMCU has a number of branches located throughout central Victoria, including Shepparton, Mooroopna, Kyabram, Seymour, Euroa, Kilmore, Numurkah, Benalla and Echuca. ENTERING the property market can be daunting and scary, when it should be an exciting time in any person’s life and although buying a brand new home is a much bigger investment than buying a car or paying for a holiday, it is just as important to know all the ins and outs. The following tips will make the journey to buying your new home a little easier. • Don’t rush. Spend some time researching the area you would like to live in. This will allow you to properly understand value, what you should be paying and more importantly what you shouldn’t be paying. • What are your must haves? Decide what it is that you absolutely must have and run with it. If you definitely want a car space, be sure you inform the builder and don’t settle on less if it’s what you really want, remember this is an investment for most of your life, so you want to be comfortable. • B u d g e t o u t s i d e t h e a c t u a l purchase. You need to budget for expenses outside of buying your house. Make sure you have allocated money for your local council rates and be sure to talk to your builder about any further expenses that may arise. • Due diligence. Before signing off, be sure to check, double check and triple check that everything is in working order and your home has been built to your specifications. • When it comes to finding the right lender, shop around. You might decide to use a mortgage broker rather than getting a bank loan. Don’t settle for the first mortgage rate; go out and see who is offering the best deal and service.

Strength continues in the new home building market AFTER seeing bumper new dwelling rates across the state in the 2013/14 financial year the forecast for the coming year is set to see the strength of the home building market continue. In 2013/14, new dwelling commencements in Victoria increased by 2.5 percent to 51,946. And the forecast is set to see a further increase of 7.3 percent in 2014/15 to take ‘dwelling starts’ to 55,762. Housing Industry Association Executive Director Victoria, Gil King said, “Dwelling commencements in Victoria are forecast to rise for a second year, meaning the overall level of activity is on track to remain historically healthy. “New home building made a massive contribution to economic growth in the state last year, with particularly strong increases in new multi-unit dwelling construction. “Strong new home building activity helps to contain price pressures in the housing market. A steady flow of new homes is therefore consistent with achieving better affordability outcomes.”

new House&Land Never been a better time
to buy new THERE has never been a better time to sit down and consider building your very own home, after the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Board announced last month it would be lowering the Official Cash Rate for the first time since August 2013. Housing Industry Association Chief Economist, Harley Dale said, “The RBA Board have cut rates to provide an opportunity for the economy to grow at a stronger rate than might otherwise have occurred. “New residential construction has been the star performer of the Australian economy in recent years, generating considerable employment along the way. “A further ‘touch down’ to interest rates will help maintain very healthy levels of new home building while hopefully broadening the base of Australia’s economic growth.”

THEY are known for their quality craftsmanship and installation but Liberty Kitchens do more than just provide specialist designs on kitchens. Do you need your bathroom, ensuite, study, bedroom, living room or alfresco area updated or newly designed? Liberty Kitchens can work with you to custom design cabinetry that will suit your home’s unique style. Liberty Kitchens Senior Sales Estimator, Dawn Rayner said, “We can virtually do anything. If you have an idea, bring it in and have a chat to us and we’ll work out how we can build it for you.” “Some of the most popular items we have been asked to make are for other areas of the home including vanity units, laundry cabinets, home offices, wardrobes, television units and alfresco cabinets.” “The 2014/2015 trends are demanding clean straight lines in carpentry. Clients are leaning towards vanity units with a floating effect and the absence of handles on drawers and cupboards, with the push to open option on these becoming more popular.” “People are also considering more the use of stone for benchtops and undermounting basins to give a fluid line. We are also seeing floating shelves being used in units that are custom designed for DVD players and gaming devices”. “Going back to the kitchen though, we have also noticed customers opting to include LED lighting in kitchen cabinets to improve lighting conditions on work surfaces,” said Dawn. Over the last 20 months the region has seen local, national, international and statewide investors building on the region’s economy and creating jobs including GrainCorp Oilseeds Numurkah plant sharing in $125M, Aldi’s $2M expansion, a $3.5M investment by Radevski Coolstores, Pactum Dairy’s $67M opening and expansion, a $13.3M Dhurringile Prison upgrade, a $2M Quality Hotel Parklake upgrade, the $100M SPC investment, a $1.4M Shepparton Golf Club Rebuild, the $2.2M relocation of Scorpio foods from Dandenong to Lemnos, a $14.2M Unilever upgrade, Shepparton Marketplace changing hands for $70.6M, the $3.6M construction of the new APCO Service Station and the $17M new Riverside Plaza complex. Other investments by State and Federal Government, local groups as well as council include a $700,000 Wanganui Park Secondary College upgrade, the $73M Shepparton Law Courts funding, the $13.44M proposed Sports Precinct upgrade, a $3M music department upgrade for Goulburn Valley Grammar, a new $10.4M Youth Foyer, a $2M African Community Centre, a $240,000 Shepparton Search and Rescue upgrade, a $650,000 upgrade to the Shepparton Library, $1.1M of renovations to GV Health’s Mary Coram Unit, Medical Ward and Pharmacy, a $400,000 upgrade to the Shepparton Senior Citizens Centre, a $1.5M upgrade to the Shepparton Showgrounds and the $42.5M proposal for the new Shepparton Art Museum. Expansions such as that shown by Bras ‘n’ Things, mergers like that between Focus Cards and Gifts and Centrefair Lotto and the opening of several other businesses including Mass Nutrition, restaurant 2wo 7even 5ive, Kathmandu, A la mode, the new Malaysian supermarket Sahar Market and Halal Butcher and Go Sushi are also a strong indication that investors are entering and have confidence in the local market. Construction of new residential properties have also boomed with more than $43M spent on new dwellings since July 2013. Kevin Hicks Real Estate Director, Rocky Gagliardi said, “To see commercial properties moving and to have interest from right across Australia is a good sign. “It really provides a vote of confidence in the area to be seeing that people are confident in spending money here. “We have had tough times like most regional areas, but this amount of investment is an indication that people outside the region are confident in the Shepparton area. “Shepparton is a strong area with stronger yields, which makes it appealing. “Even in the last three months, we have seen properties including 247 Wyndham Street, 89 Drummond Road, 31 Hoskins Street and 157 Fenaughty Street in Kyabram sold. “The amount of properties turning over in such a short period is a good sign for the area.”

HOUSE AND LAND TIPS… Before you break into the new house and land market, there are a few things you need to decide upon that will make the process a little easier. Photo: Supplied.
House and land packages: what to look for HOUSE and land packages are all the rage at the moment and are usually the cheaper way to break into the property market, but there are a few things you need to really look at before buying into a package and beginning the building process. • The right estate It’s important to ensure you pick the right estate or ‘community’ to build in. Start with your lifestyle and make sure the community you choose meets your needs. Pay attention to infrastructure nearby, particularly transport. Remember, you will be living as a part of this community for a while, so you want to be sure it is right for you and your family. • New estate checklist: - Travel time to work, family and friends - Community design – takes advantage of the landscape and incorporates social infrastructure like childcare centres and schools - Good transport and shopping options nearby - Open public space like parks and walking trails • The lot Typically, blocks start at 300sqm and rise to up to around 600sqm with smaller lots typically close to open spaces, convenience retail and collector roads. The slope or grading of the lot is also an important consideration, with the flatter blocks best for the volume style builders, while sloping blocks usually require a bespoke build, which is more expensive. • Lot checklist: - Shape of lot suited to the house you intend to build - Grading – flat for the designs of volume builders, sloped for spilt level but will need bespoke design - Orientation – Do you want the backyard facing the afternoon sun? - Topography – elevated if you want a balcony with views - Smaller lots for a smaller houses closer to parks and retail - Unstable soil and underground rock – these can ratchet up building costs • The right builder The best way to find a builder is to visit a range of display homes on your favoured estate. Once you have found a house with the design you like, it’s time to talk business with the builder. Be sure to enquire about the following: - What is included and what isn’t. Display homes feature the best fittings, finishes and appliances, which may not be included in the standard package
- Layout. Most buyers like to make changes but these can prove problematic for the builders - Construction. When will it commence and how long will it take - Environment features. The cost of power, water and gas is likely to keep on rising, so ask which sustainability features are incorporated into the design - Before committing to a builder, ask to see examples of houses they have completed in the last two years and see if you can talk to the owners. This will give you an insight into the process and how happy the owners are with their house. Builder checklist: - Are they licensed? - Do they have builder’s insurance? - Have they checked the lot for suitability? - Have you visited recent projects?

Create a functional and fantastic interior YOU spend a great deal of time inside your home and that’s why it is so important to make sure that your indoors are not only functional but are exactly what you want aesthetically. To help you pull together the perfect interior design for your new home there are some basics to follow. 1. Functional layout Interior design must begin with a functional layout of a room. So when you are building a new home, be sure to keep your interior in mind when looking at layout and design. Functionality of your home is very dependent on individual lifestyles. If you have an empty nest, then you may be more willing to invest in expensive pieces and room decor, while busy families may prefer an open floor plan that is unobstructed by numerous decorative objects. Consider your individual living needs and then you can start planning your look. 2. Choose your seating wisely Most designers will tell you that if you are going to splurge on
Page 14 – The Adviser, New House & Land – March 2015
one item, then let it be the lounge suite. Choosing the correct seating for a room can be overwhelming. You need to choose the correct colour, fabric and size. Visiting numerous design showrooms will help you in the initial search of style options that suit your needs and tastes. But before venturing out to shop, measure the space you have available. Colour is also important so try to choose a colour or pattern that won’t get ‘old.’ Another nice tip is to look at the colours you will have in your home; colours of wall paint, carpet, rugs even artistry you have hanging on the wall can help with choosing the right colour lounge suite for you. 3. A touch of décor Making a style statement is all the rage right now and the best way to do that in your home is by adding a touch of décor. For those who have a seasoned knowledge of design this step may come naturally but for newcomers to design a great place to start is by browsing through magazines or
online for some ideas. While browsing, take notice of the way showrooms display their decorative objects; notice that most things are placed thoughtfully into groupings and not strewn about individually through the room. Also, adding a touch of green really does finish any room. A tall potted plant or two really can make a room look and feel fresher. Most of all though be sure to try and buy objects that really speak to who you are. 4. Make it you Perhaps the most important design tip is to make your indoors you. This is where you get to have fun and showcase your personality. If you love colour, then find ways to incorporate colour through pillows and removable wallpaper. If you have travelled the world, then showcase the pictures you have taken or the items you collected while traveling. If you love zebras, then incorporate some zebra print on a foot stool or area rug.

new House&Land Don’t get left
stuck in the mud
BEFORE you go committing yourself to purchasing a block of land there is an all important first step that you need to take to ensure you don’t get left stuck in the mud, and that is to get your soil tested. While a block of land may look alright to the eye, it can have hidden dangers attached to it if the soil isn’t tested to ascertain the correct slab and footing design of your home. If for example, you’re building on a slope, the wrong slab and footing design could see your land slip. Australia also has a set of standards that are applied to soil tests. The classifications range from stable to land expected to have excessive movement. There are a lot of sites that are rated “P,” which means “potential problem,” and it is essential that you know if your land has this rating before you go through with buying it. The “P” rating doesn’t mean that a home can’t be built on the land, but it does mean that further testing is necessary to determine what type of home is best-suited to be built on the land. The test is taken through soil samples being tested for the potential of shrinking and swelling, which is a predictor of movement. Other site classification indices are applied to testing and the classification is determined. When the land is given a classification, it determines what building structure and foundations will give the best results on the land and therefore let you know if that block of land is the right block to build you home.

For more information contact the GMCU Shepparton, on 5821 9033 or visit www.gmcu.com.au

For more information or to speak to the professional team at Liberty Kitchens visit 60 Williams Road, Shepparton or phone 5831 2620.

SNAPSHOTS OF SHEPPARTON’S PAST
SEE THE COBLER TO HAVE YOUR SHOE MENDED… In 1938 Williams the Shoe Man opened its doors along Wyndham Street opposite the old post office building. When it opened, Cliff Gill was the Manager and is pictured in the middle photo on the far left, with a proud Kevin Edward McCoy standing on the far right, eager to start his first job. In the photo on the left, Cliff Gill is seen fitting a customer with a new pair of shoes. At this point in time, Williams had moved further north along Wyndham Street and was situated beside Wyndham Walk. Most people will remember the little cobbler pictured in the photo on the right. He sat in the window hammering away all day mending a shoe and according to comments, most of the community thought it was magical.
Snapshots of Shepparton’s past SHEPPARTON has been a thriving community for more than 155 years, and throughout that time many people and events have helped to shape the township into the community that it is today. The Adviser, with the help of former local, Marlene Kuhn
and the wider community, has decided to share some of those moments in time with you through a series of photographs. If you have an old photograph of a local event or moment in time that you would love to see published, feel free to email the image to editorial@sheppartonadviser.com.au

Kewell to bring academy to Shepparton Region’s youths to learn from the ‘master’ A ONCE in a lifetime opportunity for young soccer lovers is about to kick into the region, when soccer superstar, Harry Kewell brings the Harry Kewell Academy to Shepparton for two big days in April. Running on Tuesday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 22 the personalised training lessons will offer children aged between 8 and 14 years the chance to learn skills from the ‘master’ of soccer. Sydney born Kewell travelled to England at age 15 to trial with English Premier League Club Leeds United, where he was offered a contract and debuted at the age of 17. Kewell aims to offer personalized training, unlike anything else available in Australia to ensure children are offered the same opportunities he was. Kewell said, “Your child will learn my methods, so I’ll be hands on with the teaching. It’s the way I learned to play and what I perfected in my 26 year professional
career. So I know these methods work, whether you’re playing Under 10s in some suburban league, or in the World Cup. “With the help of Jeep, I am able to reach regional towns in Australia. I look forward to coaching kids in regional locations to help them reach their potential. “I will teach respect for the ball and what that means. It’s how I was taught,” Kewell said. Places are capped for each clinic to ensure the one on one support offered by the Harry Kewell Academy. Additional professional coaches will accompany Kewell to ensure each child receives expert advice and expertise. Parents are encouraged to register their children via www.harrykewellacademy.com/masterclass for the 4:30pm to 7pm clinic at the Goulburn Valley Suns Football Club, McEwan Reserve, Brauman Street in Shepparton.

UMPIRES TO KICK GOAL… AFL Felid Umpire, Troy Pannell (left) and Boundary Umpire, Chris Esler (right) will be coming to Shepparton this Friday to launch the new Diversity Academy in Shepparton and conduct training sessions in the local area. Photo: Supplied.
IN A bid to help promote umpiring in the region, two of the running umpires in the North Melbourne v Hawthorn NAB Challenge game to be played at Shepparton’s Deakin Reserve this Sunday, will be spending two days before the event attending a series of events and activities across Shepparton. Troy Pannell (Field) and Chris Esler (Boundary) are set to arrive in Shepparton this Friday and during their three days in the region will launch the new Diversity Academy in Shepparton, conduct an umpire training session for local umpires and participate in the Goulburn Murray VLine Cup training session on Sunday morning, before preparing for the big game.
AFL Goulburn Murray Football Development Manager, Mark Lambourn values the visit as an important event. “The Road Show is a great way for the AFL Umpires to interact with the community and to conduct umpire training activities. “Both Troy and Chris are keen to promote the values of umpiring and to assist local umpires in their skill development. “It will be a great way to launch the NAB Challenge game on the Sunday with the umpires involved in development activities, umpire coaching and interactions with media and the general community.”
WHEELS will be turning on July 19 this year, when the seventh round of the MX Nationals hits the track at the Goulburn Valley Motorcycle Club. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dennis Patterson said he was excited about the announcement. “The event continues Greater Shepparton’s reputation as a key sporting event destination in regional Australia and brings much needed economic stimulation to the region in a traditionally quiet July period. “The partnership with MX Nationals continues Greater Shepparton’s history of being a strong motoring region and something we are proud of. “The local Goulburn Valley Junior Motorcycle Club also do a great job hosting major events in our region and need to be congratulated on their ability to host such a high calibre national event. “With competitors from all around Australia and over 4,000 spectators expected to converge on Mooroopna, we look forward to hosting a wonderful event experience.” MX Nationals Series Promotor, Kevin Williams said, “The Shepparton region is obviously a very strong area for motorcycling, and after seeing their success at the state championships, and looking at the venue geographically it is very well placed. “The region has plenty of room for the MX Nationals infrastructure, which we find is one of the hardest things for us to achieve. “There are also plenty of great facilities such as accommodation, restaurants etc in the Greater Shepparton region, so we’re looking forward to taking the round there this year. “The Council at Shepparton have put a lot of support into bringing national and international events into the region and we are delighted to have them as a partner of the championship and have their support of the MX Nationals.” For further information on the 2015 MX Nationals season, head to www.mxnationals.com.au
