Major Riverside Plaza expansion Copulos Group puts faith in Shepparton

Shepparton’s largest private development business, The Copulos Group continues to expand at a rapid pace with the opening of the giant state-of-the-art Harvey Norman store and the soon to be open Fun City Entertainment Complex, the largest of its kind in regional Australia. The Copulos Group was founded some 50 years ago by current Chairman, Peter Copulos; with a diverse business and investment portfolio the Copulos Group has a large number of investments throughout not only the Goulburn Valley but the broader nation of Australia, the United States and Europe. Today the Copulos Group is led by Peter’s son Stephen Copulos and together with the extended family the Retzos Group employs over four thousand people in Australia and overseas, including many other family members. During the course of its history, the group has evolved with the drive of both Peter and Stephen who have developed expertise in a range of industries including; Property Development, Retail, Franchising, Fast Food, Hospitality, Manufacturing and Mining, Global Investments, Funds Management and Public Companies. After experiencing much success in retail and property development over the years, it soon came time for Peter to bring his dream of Riverside Plaza to life, and so, during 2009 the Copulos Group began the development process of the now Riverside Plaza. Anchored by a 4,500 sqm Coles supermarket and built to a state-of-the-art design, the centre is a now major shopping hub in northern Victoria. In August 2014 stage two of the development had commenced with the provisions of a brand new Harvey Norman store in mind, not quite seven months after works began, on March 16 this year, Shepparton residents were welcomed to celebrate the opening of the huge new superstore. The initial phase after opening has proven extremely successful as inquisitive shoppers make the most of the city’s new retail privilege. But that’s far from the extent of it all, as excitement continues to build over the much-anticipated opening of Fun City Entertainment Complex, expected to open its doors in May. The Copulos Group continues to invest heavily in the City of Greater Shepparton with several other projects currently in motion, showing a great faith in the future of our region’s economy.

INVESTMENT SUCCESS… From left, Peter, Chris and Stephen Copulos from the Copulos Group, who have invested heavily in the City of Greater Shepparton, with their latest project, the expansion of Riverside Plaza to include Harvey Norman and Fun City Entertainment Complex, already proving to be a great success. Local’s renovation warning

BATHROOM RENOVATION NIGHTMARE… Local Tatura resident, Rebecca Barker has been left without a functioning bathroom and $15,000 out of pocket after a local ‘builder’ turned her dream bathroom renovation into a bathroom renovation nightmare. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

By David Lee GOING six weeks without a functional, working bathroom is tough enough on its own but when you have a child to take care of and are left more than $15,000 out of pocket because of a dodgy job done by a local, unregistered builder, things become a little worse. This is the disappointing truth that local Tatura resident, Rebecca Barker is living with. A few weeks ago, Rebecca made the decision to re-mortgage her home loan in order to

“When I look back, I wish I hadn’t decided to go with them”

carry out a much desired renovation to her bathroom and began looking around, but she had no idea that hiring a ‘trusted’ friend of a friend to carry out the job would leave her in the predicament she is in; a bathroom with plumbing issues, tiling and grouting problems, a ticking time bomb for a basin, an unevenly installed mirror and window, an unfinished electrical job and the illegal installation of hot and cold taps. Your local service times for Easter A REVVING CELEBRATION… Louis (Shorty) Woollard had one of the best experiences of his life on the weekend, when he was presented with his XK Falcon, refurbished. Photo: Supplied.

Not stopping ‘short’ of a surprise

TO help celebrate long time owner of Woollards Auto Body Works, Louis (Shorty) Woollard’s retirement, the crew at Woollards’ spent the last three months restoring his XK Falcon, presenting it to Shorty at special car show event held at the weekend. Woollards’ owner, Luke Burgmann said, “We told him we wanted him to be judge at a car show that was in town. When he was to announce the winner, we brought the car out and surprised him. “After he officially retired at Christmas we went around to the storage shed he had the car in and ‘borrowed it’ and worked on restoring it. Some of Shorty’s old suppliers donated parts and money to help. We’re really grateful to all the suppliers and those who helped us to restore it. “We even had some ex-employees come back and give us a hand to restore the car.” Shorty said, “It was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life. I wasn’t expecting it. I’m still trying to absorb what happened. “This is one of those times I was happy to be stitched up by them. “My wife even had to keep it from me. About five to six weeks ago I told my wife I wanted to start the process of restoring the XK Falcon. She said no and kept me busy, which threw me off the track. “I’d like to really thank everyone who played a part in this great surprise.”

rLocal’s ambition hopes to inspire others to chase dreams By David Lee STARTING a business at the same time as completing VCE is something that is out of most teenagers’ comprehension, but local 17 year old, Kuol Mawien Kuol is doing just that, and is hoping that it might inspire others to chase their dreams. Currently finishing his final year at Shepparton High School, Kuol made the move to follow his long time dream of starting an online clothing website, with www.onekingclothing.com going live in December last year selling t-shirts, ‘trackies,’ hats, accessories and more, some with his own designs printed on them. Kuol said, “I’ve had the idea for years. I decided on the hip-hop style of clothing because I wanted to base it around my musical feeling. “Starting my own online business had been playing on my mind since I was young. I learned about editing websites in IT and completed a Certificate III in Retail Operations through school. “I’d like to thank my parents for supporting me and encouraging me to do this. “My goal is to expand my brand and empower the kids of our generation to chase

Google confirmed its place as the most popular graduate employers when the top 100 graduate employers were announced by the Hon. Luke Hartsuyker MP. Former St Brendan’s and Goulburn Valley Grammar School student, Geoffrey Adams launched the Top 100 Graduate Employers Guide along with two fellow Adelaide university graduates, Jeffrey Duncan and Steven Butler. The three entrepreneurs have joined forces to produce the guide, which is backed by The Australian newspaper. Geoffrey was a top advertising consultant with Sensis before joining GradAustralia. “The guide also has a sector and industry ranking in addition to the overall ranking of Australia’s top 100 businesses. There is also a whole lot of other valuable information for the student and graduate to help guide them to the most suitable graduate positions,” Geoffrey told The Adviser. A celebration of good food, great wine and camaraderie SPECIAL CELEBRATION DINNER… Shepparton Beefsteak and Burgundy Club Former Member, Don Phillips, President, Ian McKinnon and Life Member, Dr. Roger Key helped to celebrate the clubs 50th year at a special dinner recently. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

By David Lee OVER the past 50 years it has been all about good food, great wine and camaraderie for the members of the Beefsteak and Burgundy Club, who recently celebrated their milestone with a special dinner. Having started in the Goulburn Valley in 1964, and now joining 250 other clubs around the world, the 57th Beefsteak and Burgundy Club has thrived over the years, with members enjoying food from across Victoria and South Australia and wine from around the world, some trips taking them to the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Coonawarra and Rutherglen in pursuit of great wine. Club Member, Don Phillips said, “I remember my first meeting with the club in the early ‘80s. It was all very formal. The drinks kept coming, but the food was delayed, and delayed and delayed. Our guest speaker was from All Saints Wine in the Rutherglen area. He stood up and said if we didn’t get

some food soon he was going to eat the flowers on the table. He then went to sit down and missed his chair. Ha, that was my introduction to this great club. “The club has a Food Master, who goes to local restaurants to get them to make a signature dish that may be outside the restaurant’s regular menu; it’s more the chef’s signature dish. We then have the group’s Wine Master match the wine with the dish. “Over the years we’ve tasted some great foods from across regional Victoria. “Our 50th celebration was a great evening with a lot of past members. We even had a special beer made called ‘The Roger.’ Club Member, Dr Roger Key said, “We’ve enjoyed ourselves over the years. “Some meals we’ve had have been a disaster but most are definitely ones to remember. “We have tasted some really top wines from across the world which has broadened our concept of wines.”

We welcome letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain defamatory material, or information of a personal nature which is not in the public domain.

BALANCED AND ACCURATE INFORMATION Dear Editor, I feel compelled to give your readers more balanced and accurate information than they have been receiving lately through other media outlets about the operational aspects of Greater Shepparton City Council and the CEO, Mr Gavin Cator. Having been a councillor of Greater Shepparton for the past nine years and Mayor for four of those years I believe I am well qualified to assess the situation and share my knowledge with residents. I have seen the organisation grow and change and am proud to say that the organisation which now exists is strong, efficient and effective, with a competent and experienced CEO and dedicated staff. Improvements began in 2009 when Mr Phil Pearce was appointed CEO and began working towards cultural change and economic efficiencies. Mr Pearce began a restructure of the organisation and realigned some departmental functions. He greatly improved the information flow to councillors and appointed staff who had the expertise to increase Council’s interaction with the community, including a greater focus on the needs of small town communities. Following Mr Pearce’s move to Newcastle Council, the current CEO, Mr Gavin Cator, was appointed in January 2012 to continue the transformation, including a direction to achieve budgetary efficiencies, lower rate rises and an accountable and effective workforce. Over the past three years Mr Cator has made significant improvements to the way the organisation operates. Councillors are now provided with more informative Council Meeting Agendas and more detailed information in budget discussions. Operating Budget increases have been kept below CPI and these financial ef ficiencies have assisted Cou ncil to implement the lowest rate rises in over a decade. There are now many more community consultations across the entire municipality, which has led to a better Council Plan a nd Small Tow n Development Pla ns being decided on by each community. A community based committee was established to assist Council to plan and adopt an

Page 8 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1244 Wednesday, April 1, 2015

improved Rates Strategy. To ensure that staff are productive and engaged in their work M r Cator has introduced workforce planning and an accou nt abi l it y f ra mework. A People Performance Strategy has been implemented in order to increase the positive contributions to the community made by our staff. Performance Reviews are completed annually, allowing for effective Performance Indicators to be developed with staff, including a review of Position Descriptions annually. There are also Corporate Training Programs, a High Performance Leadership Program and Vision Super Sessions for mature workforce staff. A well-being program for workers has led to a significant reduction in WorkCover premiums over the past two years, resulting in a saving to ratepayers. Many people now see Greater Shepparton Council as an employer of choice and we are attracting an increased number of quality staff as a result. M r Cator was a lso i nst r u ment a l i n the planning of a range of effective State Government lobbying activities last year via the Make Shepparton Greater Campaign. I hope that people will appreciate my comments for what they are meant to be; a sincere and informed recognition of the improvements made to the organisational arm of Greater Shepparton City Council, particularly since Mr Cator has been the CEO. Yours sincerely, Jenny Houlihan Councillor Greater Shepparton City Council

BRING ON THE HEALTHY DEBATE Dear Editor, I read with interest the letter written by David McKenzie “Do We Dare To Be Great?” (Wednesday, March 11). He makes a good point in support of the new SAM, stating that it could be lost for a generation without positive feedback. There will always be a section of people who think opposite. Each member of the community has an agenda, and everybody wants a slice of the pie. David McKenzie mentions Ballarat and Bendigo as regions with decent cultural

offerings for citizens and visitors. They also have large scale universities, with on campus residence. The likes of that would be a big positive for Shepparton also, offering our youth the option of continuing tertiary studies here, and with onsite campus residence it could encourage youth from further afield. A flow on from this would be a wider demographic of age in the populous and would be instrumental in expanding a broad spectrum of business and economy. Once our youth leave this area to study they re-establish elsewhere, and are unlikely to return. We also need our local government bodies to encourage rather than discourage people who are established here. A large number of people who are in business or own properties have often expressed frustrations dealing with local council. It can be a time consuming and energy draining exercise obtaining clear information and guidelines, with different responses to the same query often occurring – Chinese whispers one might say. A new SAM, a new tertiary institution with choices matching the likes of Albury/ Wodonga, Ballarat, Bendigo, a new attitude that is encouraging to all and sundry, and clear and transparent communication among the leaders and planners who make or break the rules. Bring on the healthy debate I say. Yours sincerely, Maggie Turner-Miguel Shepparton

PROBLEM SOLVED Dear Editor, There appears to be a ‘common thread’ in all this bickering from within our council. Anyone can see that this council will not be able to cohesively work together again now or in the future. In a world where we can tear up contracts even as big as the east-west link then perhaps it is time to be realistic and make a final decision to end it all and start afresh. As we all know if there is one bad apple in a basket then we automatically remove it. Problem solved. Yours sincerely, Ross Farrar Shepparton

Local’s renovation warning continued from front page THE local ‘builders,’ who The Adviser is unable to name for legal reasons charged Rebecca $6,800 for labour and used the $4,000 to $5,000 worth of materials Rebecca had bought from Bunnings Warehouse, to install a bathroom that now has to be completely gutted, with another $4,000 now having to be spent for Rebecca to have a safe and functioning bathroom for both her and her son to use. Rebecca said, “I met the builder by accident and I mentioned that I was planning a renovation of the bathroom. We got talking and it turned out that they were friends with somebody I was also friends with. He said both he and his son had done 10 other bathroom renovations and after talking to my friend that knew them, they were given a glowing reference, so I took the chance. “I now don’t have a working shower and am forced to travel to a friend’s house in Mooroopna to shower and that’s just the beginning of the issues. “The basin counter has been cut too short and they have just filled in the excess space with silicon, not to mention the basin is sitting on cork that hasn’t been waterproofed. The mirror and wall and floor tiles have not been put on correctly and they had to extend the wall, which they haven’t filled in properly and have left the door frame hanging by a thread. “They were also supposed to organise an electrician ‘mate’ of theirs to come in and wire and install two power points and a light switch, but they kept stalling and now I am left with two holes in the walls and exposed

RIDDLED WITH PROBLEMS… Local Tatura resident, Rebecca Barker’s bathroom is so riddled with problems after a recent dodgy renovation job carried out by local ‘builders,’ that she now needs to have the whole room gutted and re-installed. Rebecca was left with an incorrectly laid floor, wall and mirror tiling not installed correctly, a basin counter that is hanging on by silicon, an extension to a wall that was not completed correctly. wiring. “After I noticed the plumbing issue with the shower, which was causing the shower to flood and run all over the floor, I called him to come back and fix it. He said to me that he doesn’t want anything more to do with it and told me to delete his number. I can’t comprehend how they can sleep at night. “I’ve had no choice but to get a registered builder and plumber in to have a look and they said it looks like something from one of those television shows about bathroom renovations going wrong. “I now have to have the whole lot gutted and pay $4,000 to have it all done correctly. “I guess I am lucky in a way because

the builders I have looking at it from JWB Building and Maintenance and the Plumber from Brian Beer Plumbing have been a godsend. They are getting everything done for me and are looking at the cheapest possible options for me because I have already gone $5,000 over my budget. “When I look back, I wish I hadn’t decided to go with them. “This is a warning for others out there to just go with a licenced builder or tradesperson. I don’t want them to do this to anybody else. “It’s good to know that at least everything will be fixed and done by a qualified builder.”

Smoking bans extended across state By David Lee NEW smoke free areas will soon be in force across Victoria, which will see smoking bans placed on the grounds of, and within four metres of an entrance to hospitals and community health services, schools, childcare centres, kindergartens and preschools, and many government buildings. The extension to banned areas, which will come into place as of April 13 this year, are being enforced to help limit the exposure to people and with the government planning on making smoking seem less normal. Director of Quit Victoria, Dr Sarah White

said the extension of outdoor smoking bans would send a clear message to the community that the Government is putting health first. “This is an important way of making smoking less attractive, particularly to young people. “This policy will be incredibly popular in the community, as people now have an expectation that they can enjoy everyday activities without exposure to second-hand smoke. Dr White said making outdoor drinking and dining areas smoke free would be the logical next step for Government to consider.

Greater Shepparton Basketball Association;

a history of building a successful drawcard for the region FOR the past 42 years, Greater Shepparton residents have been cheering on our basketball stars while they have dribbled the court to success, brought about by the 2,000 plus people involved in the Greater Shepparton Basketball Association (GSBA), who are all working together and building on the successful drawcard for our region that is basketball. Having officially been formed out of the amalgamation of the Shepparton Basketball Association (SBA) and Mooroopna Basketball

Association (MBA) in 1984, the GSBA story actually goes back as far as 1969/70. The SBA players took to the courts of the Drill Hall under the guidance of inaugural President, Dick Clayton until the stadium was built in 1982. But the building of the stadium didn’t come without its hiccups. The original building contractor went bust and construction came to a halt until the user bodies; basketball, badminton and table tennis agreed to fund a loan taken out by council for building to

recommence. Down the track, extensions were made and the stadium, that draws more than 6,000 people to the region each year, is as it stands today. The Mooroopna Basketball Association was formed following a public meeting held on January 16, 1973, with Sal Phillips beginning as the association’s inaugural President. John Ryan, Stan Watt, Ray Nioa, Frank Kool, Neil Young, Danny Allan, also each held the office Continued on page 22 in the following years.

continued from page 1 of liftout BRIAN Law was the association’s Secretary for the first year, followed by Val Hayes for the next seven years. In 1982, Irene Young took over from Val until the amalgamation in 1984. Irene began as Junior Registrar in 1979 alongside the then President, Ross Harbeck in late 1984, remaining in the position, and that of Administrator, until 2009. The Mooroopna Midget Association, which is much like the current Under 10s was formed around the same time with June Gosstray, Helen Slattery and Henry Beks heading the group. During the first five years of MBA, many of the Shepparton basketballers chose to play over the river, but when it came to playing representative basketball, some of the Mooroopna players wished to play under the Shepparton banner, which caused a lot of initial problems. Due to the towns being so close it was a no brainer to form a united association to run the representing teams before the amalgamation and the forming the Shepparton/Mooroopna A.B.A Inc. At the time of the two associations’ amalgamation, Don Wormwald was the association President, doing a six year stint alongside Secretary, Ross Harbeck. As a proven success to the association, players coming from this area who have been nurtured and trained by the GSBA have gone on to play in national level teams or on the South East Australian Basketball League including Gary Trotter, Roger Smith, Brad Dowling, Aneka Kerr, and Gemma Kerr, Caitlin Shadbolt, Merle Saunders Matt Bartlett, Jaqueline Kitto and Madeline Garrick

GREATER SHEPPARTON BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION

Want to get involved with one of the region’s

biggest economic boosting associations? THE Greater Shepparton Basketball Association (GSBA) and its players strive for success both on and off the court, and realise that without the support of the community and the development of its junior players, it would be much more difficult to achieve their goals, reach new levels and take home championships. Currently, the association has several sponsorship options available including being a Competition Sponsor, GSBA Signage Sponsor, GSBA Sponsor Partners or Player Sponsor. As well as assisting one of the region’s most important economic

boosting associations, some sponsorship packages provide great benefits such as your business logo on all player and stadium uniforms, signage display at Shepparton Sports Stadium, promotion on television, radio and print advertising, listing on the Shepparton Gators and GSBA websites, listing and one promotion on the Shepparton Gators and GSBA Facebook and YouTube sites, logo in all Big V and CBL home game programs and documents, mention in all speaker announcements during games, the opportunity to distribute promotional material at home games, placing of business

logo in all email promotions to members and visiting teams, an opportunity for GSBA and Gator players to appear at your business’ promotional events, exclusive tickets to nominated home games, including free entry, prominent seating and drinks and nibbles as well as email promotions to GSBA members. To be involved as a sponsor, contact manager@gsba.com.au or phone Tony Long on 0402 424 811.

The association’s competitive streak THE GSBA, has for the last 20 years, had local competition in both seniors and juniors across seven clubs, as well as squad junior teams competing across the state representing this region and a senior representative program. This has been a training ground for elite athletes who have gone on to now be very much recognised at a state level. Local Competition The association’s membership base is in excess of 2,000, with two seasons; a Winter and Summer season that is inclusive of over 100 teams of both senior and junior players throughout the year. This number also includes life members, administrators, referees, coaches and team managers. The teams play on four nights throughout each term, with some of the senior competitions playing out over school holidays. Squad Representative Sides (Junior Gators) There are approximately 150 players aged between 9 and 17 years involved in the junior teams. In 2001, development teams for all age groups were introduced to establish and foster skill development and succession planning for a wider range of juniors. Each player in Division 1 or the development team is expected to pay their own expenses when participating at tournaments such as court fees, travel, accommodation and meals.

In December each year, Shepparton hosts a junior tournament that attracts teams from all over the state including Melbourne. All teams have voluntary team managers and coaches who are backed by a large parent body. Senior Men’s and Women’s Competitions (Gators) From humble beginnings, the club has progressed to the Big V League of the Australian Basketball Association, second only to the National Basketball League. This competition now includes some 70 odd teams across the state of Victoria and is a leading foundation for the sport. The Gators Men have a very successful history, including scoring four championships (1994, 2000, 2001, 2003) and two runner-ups (1993, 2002), while our Lady Gators have one championship (2003) and one runner-up (2004) under their belts. 2015 Tournament Timetable March 7 and 8 - Bill Muir Koori Tournament – 77 teams with 800 competitors and some 2,000 visiting spectators. April 10, 11 and 12 - Gold Stars Under 14 Basketball Victoria Country Championships 76 teams from across the state with 800 to 1,000 competitors and 3,000 visiting spectators. May 2 and 3 - Shepparton Show Me Annual

Masters Tournament for Fun and Social Activity – approximately 20 teams and 300 to 400 visiting spectators. December 4, 5 and 6 - Shepparton Show 40th Annual Junior Tournament – approximately 160 teams expected with 3,500 visiting spectators.

$2M economic boost through just three tournaments THE Greater Shepparton Basketball Association’s (GSBA) tournaments provide more than just a great sport, they help to bring more than a $2M economic boost and more than 7,000 people to the region through just three of their tournaments. This year, the GSBA is expecting to bring at least 6,000 visitors to town, and that’s just between the Bill Muir Koori Tournament, the Under 14s Basketball Victoria Championships and in December, Shepparton Show Me 40th Annual Junior Tournament. With more than 1,300 local members, from the junior leagues right up to the Gators, the tournaments see visitors from as far wide as Ararat, Orbost, Ballarat, Phillip Island, Bellarine, Poowong, Bendigo, Sale, Castlemaine, Churchill, Colac, Swan Hill, Mildura

and more as well as some closer regional towns such as Benalla, Seymour and Echuca. In 2014 more than 7,000 people played, watched or assisted in stadiums around Greater Shepparton during these events alone. Out of those, 239 were surveyed by the GSBA, which revealed that 26.47 percent of players attended GSBA events with one non-competing person, 30.25 percent of players attended GSBA events with 2 noncompeting people, 34.87 percent of players attended GSBA events with between 3 and 6 non-competing people, 56.03 percent of visiting groups stayed in paid accommodation in Greater Shepparton, 71.79 percent booked accommodation with recommendation from the GSBA directly or via the GSBA’s marketing materials and

relationships with competing basketball associations, 16.81 percent stayed one night and 48.71 percent of groups stayed more than two nights. Greater Shepparton City Council estimate that the overnight average expenditure per person is $110. With that in mind 25.44 percent of those surveyed said they had spent between $100 to $250 during their stay, 38.16 percent said they spent between $250 and $500, 30 percent spent between $500 and $1,000, 55 percent of respondents said they spent their money on retail, shopping, 25 percent visited local attractions and 65 percent ate at local cafés and restaurants between two to four times during their stay.

PICTURES OF SHEPPARTON’S PAST EARLY EASTER IN THE GOULBURN VALLEY… Easter time in the Goulburn Valley in the 1940s wasn’t quite the chocolaty haven we see around today, but it still was a sugary time of year. Former resident, Bev McKernan (Emanuelli) remembers being a child in the ‘40s and seeing Easter Eggs made out of a sugary substance decorated beautifully with sugar flowers and piping that held the two faces of the eggs together, which can be seen in the photo on the left. They may have looked lovely but would have caused many tooth cavities. Bev also recalls Easter being a time when there was no getting out of Sunday School or church. In the photo on the right, Bev at five years old, her sister, Margaret at 10 months old in their Sunday School dresses, photographed with their mother, Bertha. They would attend on Easter Sunday to listen to the Minister preach about the true meaning of why Easter is celebrated; the death and resurrection of Christ. It wasn’t until Bev was 9 or 10 years old, when her Uncle Jim and Auntie Rona came up from Melbourne, that she got to see a chocolate Easter Egg for the first time. The James Chocolates were each in their own boxes tied together with a ribbon.

Snapshots of Shepparton’s past SHEPPARTON has been a thriving community for more than 155 years, and throughout that time many people and events have helped to shape the township into the community that it is today. The Adviser, with the help of former local, Marlene Kuhn

and the wider community, has decided to share some of those moments in time with you through a series of photographs. If you have an old photograph of a local event or moment in time that you would love to see published, feel free to email the image to editorial@sheppartonadviser.com.au

Shepparton Club continues to support local community

Page 28 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1244 Wednesday, April 1, 2015

HAVING donated just over $30,000 back into the local community this year, the Shepparton Club announced it would be continuing its commitment, with more donations made to local community organisations made during a special presentation last week. The Shepparton Club General Manager, Don Field said, “It was satisfying that the Shepparton Club could assist local community organisations with funding assistance. Recipients of donations were GV Hospice, Life Education and local sporting organisations. “This year the club also had an initiative to present scholarships to Wanganui Park Secondary College and Shepparton High School to assist deserving students with ongoing study requirements including associated costs of educational needs. This is a rewarding initiative by the Shepparton Club, which will assist those students. “GV Hospice will once again be the recipient

of funding this year. The hospice service provides quality, professional, palliative care to patients and their families, and the demand for the service sometimes exceeds the resources available. A chronic shortage of government funds have also severely limited the scope of this service. This will be the sixth year that the club has committed funding to GV Hospice. The club recently completed a $50,000 funding commitment and are once again happy to continue its relationship with GV Hospice.” The Shepparton Club are also set to donate funding to Verney Road School in coming weeks for much needed equipment and services. “Clubs have a proud history of supporting community groups and charities in their local area. We urge everyone to get behind your local clubs and help support your local community,” Mr Field said.

Like a dog’s breakfast… righteously so LAST week, breakfast for Viatek staff went to the dogs, with the firm announcing its latest sponsorship; Righteous Pups Australia (RPA). Starting in Bendigo in 2003, the RPA charity is still the only organisation to place autism assistance dogs with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorders — Australia wide. RPA Managing Director, Jo Baker, “So far, we’ve placed 30 dogs with families across Australia, but we have about 150 on the waiting list. “It costs around $30,000 and takes up to two years to train and place an Autism assistance dog. All at no cost to the recipient family. “We’ve just seen so many lives truly liberated and transformed with these dogs. The dogs become a meaningful companion for the child, yet at the same time are capable of supporting the whole family. “The impact is significant, but because we don’t get government funding, we rely on the generosity of the community and communityminded businesses like Viatek.” Regional Sales and Marketing Manager for

Viatek Central Victoria, Craig McInnes said the business was more than happy to step in. “We like getting involved in community activities, and we like making a difference in a young person’s life. “We’ve donated a copier and also look after RPA’s printing and IT requirements. They

didn’t have IT skills in-house, so that’s also where we can really help, to develop those as well. “One of Viatek’s part-time staff has Autism, so the business is fully aware of the benefits of community engagement for people with Autism.”

Exceptional business opportunity THE chance is now available to own one of Shepparton’s high quality gift and collectables businesses, that is not only exceptionally positioned but also well marketed with little direct competition; Grove Interiors on Fryers Street. Established in 2002 and acquired by the current owners in 2004, Grove Interiors is one of Shepparton’s supreme retail offerings, has a very strong following in the Goulburn Valley and northeast Victoria region, and offers a wide range of high quality gift lines and collectables, items for the home decorator and a selection of antiques for the discerning buyer. What sets it apart is the fact that Grove Interiors is an ideal destination for a selective, quality-conscious clientele and the stock includes beautiful vintage style silver and fashion jewellery, pretty china, silver and glassware, and a good range of collectables to cater for all tastes and budgets. Handmade soaps and scented candles create a wonderful aroma, tempting customers into the shop. Most of the stock is displayed on quality 1800s to 1940s style furniture, which is also for sale, effectively utilising all floor space. The owners attend gift and jewellery fairs twice a year and some antique auctions, which in itself speaks for the quality and appeal of the stock on offer.

The vendors have marketed their business very well, which has been beneficial to the overall success. “The business has an excellent reputation, and the prime location in the Fryers Street end of the Shepparton retail precinct offers significant passing foot traffic, including a significant number of visitors to the region, leisure travellers and conference delegates attending GOTAFE , which is directly opposite. “This is an opportunity not to be missed.” To register your interest or for more i n fo r m at ion on t h i s lo c a l bu si ne ss opportunity, contact Rinnovate Business Brokers on 5831 1499 or visit www. rinnovate.com

Benefit to help local’s dream realised By David Lee THERE has only been one dancer from Daphne Learoyd School of Dance in Shepparton to have been accepted to fine tune their skills at the prestigious American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA), and local Dancer, 21 year old Estelle O’Keeffe is hoping to be the second. Estelle began dancing from the age of 4 years with the local dancing school and two years later, picked up jazz and contemporary styles, which is where her love of dance and thoughts of a future career in the profession began. To help Estelle get to AMDA’s Los Angeles campus, Estelle will be holding a special Benefit Beneath the Stars event at Findon House Gardens in Ardmona, with plenty of entertainment including performances from vocational students from Daphne Learoyd School of Dance, performances by local singer, Felicity Oaks who will be accompanied by Matt Caraffa, the sounds of a string quartet which will welcome guests upon arrival, a flute duet and of course dance routines by Estelle herself. Attendees will also be treated to a drink upon arrival and canapés catered by Friars Cafe throughout the evening and will be given the chance to participate in an auction, with auction items including a dinner party for 10 catered for by Friars Cafe, a Fowles Wine vintage 2014 Ladies Who Shoot the Lunch print, a BMW ultimate Strathbogie day out for eight people or a luxury weekend away to Jamison for up to four people. Estelle said, “I auditioned for AMDA in September last year and they called me back in November saying I had been accepted. The tuition will cost $80,000USD, which is why we are putting on the benefit event; to help me get there. “AMDA is a very prestigious school and it has been a lifelong dream of mine to attend. I’m really quite excited. “I’m grateful for everything that the school’s new Principal, Roslyn Todd and Daphne have done for me. They have been exceptionally influential and I value everything they do for me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. “We are hoping to get 300 people along to this once in a lifetime cabaret style evening.” The Benefit Beneath the Stars event will run on Saturday, April 11 from 5:30pm at Findon House Gardens, 60 Ardmona Road, Ardmona. Tickets are $55 and are available at Friars Cafe. For further information, contact Estelle on 0417 565 622 or email oliverheights2@ bigpond.com

Parkrun participants get visit from running great THE Shepparton Parkrun participants were lucky enough to be able to run alongside long distance running champion, Steve Moneghetti at the weekend, who was here to speak at the Rotary Conference. Shepparton Parkrun Event Director, Allan Connolly said, “Having Steve at our Parkrun broke many of our records. Our attendance record was broken and now stands at 123. Steve also broke our course record in a time of 16.26 and helped many of our runners to new personal best times.”

Shepparton Parkrun is a free weekly timed event for runners and walkers of all standards, which takes place Saturday from 8am at Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton. It is a free community event open to all members of the community, which has been running since January this year. To take part in the weekly Parkrun event, register online at www.parkrun.com.au/register, print out your barcode and drop down at Victoria Park Lake on Sundays.

By David Lee 52 RIDERS and support crew, including 12 exchange students took on a 600km bike ride as part of the 14th Rotary Ride to Conference last week, which saw $48,000 raised to be distributed among various projects. Having raised $742,000 over its 14 years, the Rotary Ride to Conference saw riders leave Shepparton, heading to Nagambie, Heathcote and Avenel, before returning to Shepparton for the Rotary Conference. Funds raised from the ride will this year go toward Rotary projects, Life Education and toward disaster relief and aid including sleeping bags, water purification devices and cooking utensils for families affected by natural disaster.

Rotary Club of Rosebud-Rye Member and Event ‘Road Boss,’ Barry Irvin said, “The ride is very important to us because it’s representative of our district; 9820. We have riders from a good number of Rotary clubs in the district and they age up to 78 years. “The ride is a major fundraiser where all clubs in the district have the chance to join in. It promotes Life Education, healthy living and looking after yourself. “We take Harold the Giraffe from Life Education with us on the bike ride, which is always popular with the kids. “Over our 14 years $260,000 has gone to Life Education and $204,000 has been given for disaster relief and aid.”

READY TO KICK OFF… With this year’s Goulburn Valley Football League (GVFL) season ready to kick off, clubs will be looking to make amends for missed opportunities from last year’s season, including the Benalla Saints, who lost to Shepparton Swans in the Grand Final. Photo: Photo: Supplied.

By Kyle Power AS we enter the 2015 Goulburn Valley Football League football season, the air of expectation for some clubs burns brightly and the chance to make amends for missed opportunities of the season prior are a defining factor for how the current season will pan out. Any little desperate attempt to go one better and get a jump on rivals is testament to any footballing club. The Benalla Saints, the runner up from last year’s grand final, had been the side that went through the home and away season undefeated, only to lose one of the most important games of their long history, the Grand Final. The utter disbelief and heartbreak that was there for all to witness on that day, will only drive Saints Coach, Luke Morgan, and the playing group, to get the job done and deliver the silverware that has been long overdue. As a club that had been on the canvas three seasons ago, the Saints have

come a long way to now being the premiership favourite. The premiership winning team, Shepparton Swans will be out to defend their title with new Coach, Hayden Best having big shoes to fill after the departing Brett Warburton and a handful of premiership stars exiting Princess Park; none bigger than Daniel Lovick, a genuine star of country footy. Also Jamason Daniels, whose ‘will he, won’t he’ approach coming into the new year, has suddenly and controversially taken the reins as head playing coach at Tatura. Only time will tell if such a decision will pay off. A quality player. I’m confident that in time Daniels will relish the role for the Bulldogs. The anticipation and excitement for a new year of ‘footy’ isn’t too far away; I love it and I’m sure everyone in the Goulburn Valley and surrounding areas cannot wait either. Bring it on!
