By David Lee BRAVE is generally the word used to describe those who shave their head for the Leukaemia Foundation, but 12 year old local, Zac Johnson is more than brave, his approach to his fundraising campaign and desire to help others makes him a real cancer fighting champion.

Zac knows all too well the loss that comes from cancer, after discovering that his older sister had a bout with the illness, but the driving factor behind his campaign was learning that his grandmother had passed away from the illness. Zac’s Mum, Rachael said, “This all came about after I brought out some old photos of Zac’s grandmother. They were taken when she was quite ill and had no hair, which Zac began asking questions about. “I was quite emotional when I found out that he was going to shave his head. I’m very proud of him. “He actually went online and signed up on the Leukaemia Foundation website all on his own and has approached local businesses and his school for donations, and has even been talking with the Leukaemia Foundation head office and local office. “For a 12 year old boy to do it all on his own is incredible.” Zac said, “After learning about my nan passing away from cancer, I heard something on the radio about shaving your head for the Leukaemia Foundation, so I decided to do it. “I’m going to have my head shaved at my school, Mooroopna Park Primary School on Friday, May 8 and my Principal, Hayden Beaton, will be taking the first bit off. “I’ve had donations from some of the local businesses like Jacobson’s Buses in Mooroopna and Gouge Linen and Garment Services. Coles in Mooroopna also donated some icy-poles, which I have been selling at school to raise extra money. “My original target was to raise $500 but I have already passed that and am now aiming for $1,000.” Hayden said, “The school is very proud of Zac. We’ve been as supportive as possible and helping out wherever we can. “On the day of the shave, we are also having a Crazy Hair Day at the school, where students will donate a gold coin to style their hair in a crazy way and all money raised on the day will go towards Zac’s fundraising efforts.”

Local to get her wings By David Lee SHE’S been flying light aircraft since she was 15, but now local resident, Lucy Simkin will really get her wings and become a fully licenced commercial pilot, thanks to a scholarship awarded to her by Airservices Australia. The scholarship, which was only awarded to three other women across Victoria and NSW, will provide Lucy with up to $8,000 in flight training where she will complete seven theory exams including meteorology and navigation as well as gain hands-on flight knowledge and experience, all to help her reach her dream of becoming fully licenced to be able to do charter and air work and make a living from flying. Lucy, who told The Adviser her love for flying started as a fascination and has excitedly turned into a career. “It’s all very exciting and will really help a lot. I should have it completed by June next year and from then I will be able to make a living from flying. “When I’m up in the plane, I get a sense of freedom and it really is good fun.” “I’ve had some great instructors over the years and the local aviation school here in Shepparton have been very supportive. They’re a lot more earthy and offer one-on-one teaching. “I’d like to thank the Australian Women Pilots’ Association (AWPA) and Airservices Australia for making the scholarship available and for helping other women pilots like myself to achieve their dreams of flying.”

Airservices Executive General Manager, Corporate and Industry Affairs, Mairi Barton congratulated the winners and encouraged them to continue to pursue a future career in aviation. “Previous winners of these scholarships have gone on to accept flying positions in the industry after successfully achieving a commercial pilot licence.

“We’re proud to support the work of the AWPA as they help women learn to fly and we look forward to watching these women make their flying dreams a reality. “Airservices is committed to supporting diversity within the workplace and promoting opportunities for women in aviation – these scholarships enable us to help women make an active contribution to the industry.”

Community urged to get on board PLANS to see an extra nine train services from Shepparton to Melbourne added to the weekly rail timetable were launched last week, with State Member for Shepparton, Suzanna Sheed, Greater Shepparton City Council, the Committee for Greater Shepparton and the SheppartonRAILS group all working together to push the All Aboard Campaign. Currently, Shepparton has just four trains daily that travel to Melbourne on weekdays including a 5:15am, 6:31am, 12:50pm and 4:06pm and two services on Saturday including a 7:04am and 4:05pm and two on Sunday including a 7:15am and 5:05pm, but the new proposal would see an extra service added at 6:40pm on weekdays and an extra two services added for Saturday and Sunday at 9:50am and 6:40pm. Suzanna said, “These changes can be easily implemented by V/Line and would make an immediate impact on our community. “At the moment if you want to go to Melbourne after work you have to catch the 4:06pm service, which is not possible for most working people. “We’re calling on the government to make these changes and invest in these extra services for our district now; we’ve suffered an infrequent, inconvenient and slow passenger rail service for far too long.”

All Aboard Shepparton is also calling on the government to immediately invest in infrastructure at Murchison to enable trains to safely pass, invest in stabling and security works at Shepparton Station to allow for the de-watering of trains and to employ a Protective Services Officer at Seymour Station and will be taking the campaign to the Minister for Public Transport in Melbourne later this month, urging the community to get on board. Suzanna said, “We’re asking the community to get involved in this campaign and tell the government how important more frequent and more convenient rail services are to them. “I want as many people as possible to join us on the train to Melbourne to show the Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan how important this is to Shepparton District residents.” The All Aboard Shepparton campaign train will depart Shepparton on May 28 at 6:31am. Shepparton and district residents can share what an improved rail service would mean to them and their families at the All Aboard Shepparton Facebook page and on Twitter using the #allaboardshepparton.

Government’s plan to boost angler numbers THE strength of the fishing industry was given a boost this week, with the launch of the Victorian Government’s Target One Million plan, which will see measures put in place to boost recreational angler numbers from 750,000 to 1 million over the next four years. The $20M initiatives and services plan on helping to grow recreational fishing in Victoria by encouraging families to get outdoors and enjoy fishing through halting commercial netting in Port Phillip and Corio Bay over eight years through a buyout of licences and increasing fish stocks for recreational anglers across Victoria. The plan will also deliver the Better Fishing Facilities Fund to develop new recreational fishing reefs, improve boat launching facilities and provide better access to waterways. Under the plan, fish stocking will increase to five million fish per year, almost doubling the existing stocking program. It will attract more visitors to the regions with new fishing opportunities, boosting local economies and helping businesses prosper. At Monday’s launch, Parliamentary Secretary of Fisheries, Danielle Green released 50 yearling trout into Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton. Danielle said, “The plan hopes to increase the number of recreational anglers number to one million, which will create jobs, support local businesses and strengthen our rural and regional communities. “Recreational fishing contributes an estimated $2.3B to the social and economic wellbeing of Victoria, making it a vital part of our economic and social well-being. “The Andrews Labor Government will grow and promote this popular pastime for the benefit of all Victorians.”

BETWEEN 1,800 and 2,000 students from across the region as well as 250 members of the local community converged on the McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds last week, to hear about further studies or career opportunities during the Careers Day Out. More than 70 exhibitors from council, GOTAFE, police, local radio, GV Health, La Trobe University, the army reserves and more who each gave demonstrations and provided information on their careers to give people the opportunity to decide on their career or make a career change. Careers Day Out Event Coordinator and GOTAFE Marketing and Events Officer, Emily Hamilton said the 2015 Careers Day Out was a great success. “Careers Day Out attracted students from local secondary

Event Organiser, Anthony Selva said, “We’d been talking about doing a twilight cruise but because of the end of daylight savings we decided to do a day trip. “We decided to do it to get car enthusiasts out and about for a cruise and we wanted to do something to help the kids. “We had a good turnout on the day, with motorbikes, hot rods, minis and cars from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Honoured for quarter of a century in financial planning services FORMER local Financial Planner, Gary Miles was honoured with an esteemed award last week, when Financial Planning Association Australia General Manager Policy and Conduct, Dante De Gory awarded him the FPA Distinguished Service Award during a special ceremony the FPA National Roadshow at Quality Hotel Parklake in Shepparton. The award, which recognises service to the FPA, was awarded to Gary for completing 25 years of service as a financial planner in the Goulburn Valley. Sheed Welcomes Extension of Firewood Collection

Dear Editor, I welcome news that the Andrews Labor Government will allow firewood collection in Barmah Island to continue and that they will carry out urgent bridge works to allow vehicles access. This is great news for Nathalia district residents who rely on firewood for their heating and cooking. But it is unclear as to whether collection on Barmah Island will be allowed for one season or ongoing. Firewood collection in the Barmah National Park will end on June 30 but collection will be allowed in Barmah Island for the next firewood collection period from September 1. During my visits to the park I’ve been told about people coming from as far away as Melbourne to collect firewood so I am especially pleased that the government is working on a way to limit collection to local residents. Last week’s announcement also included a commitment to developing a long-term management plan for Barmah National

Park and I hope this plan is in place sooner rather than later, and that maintenance work on all other roads and bridges is made a priority. The fire and f lood risk in the park remains a concern to residents, as does the prevalence of pest animals due to the lack of investment in the park. If we look at the logistics of town planning one doesn’t have to look far for the beast of burden - four McDonalds - the central one being closed in Maude Street, three K FC restaurants, approximately more than a dozen pizza shops, kebab shops, Hungry Jacks and does one really need to bang on about it. D r G ly n n Te a l (O b s a n d G y n a e) conducted studies a few years ago on obese pregnancies in Shepparton. He had prime real estate really. Shepparton has taken gold in being the fatest city in Victoria just recently, but please let us all cry foul as our kids need jobs and need employment. My sug ge st ion is wh i lst you work at a fast food chain, go do your studies in nursing. We’ll have enough patients i n t he G ou lbu r n Va l ley reg ion w it h cardiovascular disease, diabetes, joint problems, depression and early death you’ll never be out of work. Shepparton once was a hunting ground for elite athletes such as Louise Dobson (Olympic Hockeyroo), Adem Yze (AFL) Matt Reid (Muay Thai) - what do we have now? Couch potatoes waiting for chest pain. It’s time Greater Shepparton City Council and the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry looked beyond the

Labor Re-Announcing Coalition Money

Dear Editor, I note with interest L abor’s recent announcement that it will fund a new fire station for the Earlston Country Fire Authority. This fire station was in fact funded by the previous Coalition Government and I was honoured to be present at the announcement last year on Tuesday 11 November. During our four years in government, the Coalition upgraded 250 CFA stations ahead of schedule and under budget. As a result a further 18 projects were funded, including Earlston. It’s a shame that Labor is doing so little for rural and regional Victoria that it must resort to re-announcing projects funded by the previous government. Daniel Andrews has an opportunity to fund hundreds of projects across country Victoria in this week’s Budget, many of which are ‘shovel ready’. The Grosvener (more affectionately known as ‘Reception House’), which stood in Stewart Street where the multi-deck car park is now, was run by Jesse and Allan Cray and was one of the most popular reception venues. Mothers Day Sunday, 10th May 2015 A generational recipe...

THERE is nothing more loving than handing a family recipe down through generations and the Zeqir family’s Lasagne recipe has become a delicious ‘generational recipe,’ after being handed down from mother to daughter.

Ingredients 2 x packets of La Triestina egg noodle pasta sheets 800g shredded mozzarella 100g grated parmesan 500g mince 2 x 750ml bottles of passata

Lasagne

2 garlic cloves 3 hard boiled eggs sliced 50g mild sliced salami

Method 1. Brown the garlic in olive oil and add the passata. Bring to the boil. Separately, brown the mince and boil the La Triestina egg noodle pasta sheets. 2. Place a thin layer of the passata on the bottom of a rectangular dish, followed by a layer of pasta sheets to line the bottom of the dish. 3. Add another layer of passata, a layer of mince

and sprinkle on a layer of parmesan. Lay another lot of pasta sheets and top it with a layer of passata, five slices of mild salami, one sliced boiled egg and cover in mozzarella. 4. Repeat step 3 two more times. 5. Place another layer of the La Triestina egg noodle pasta sheets and top with a layer of mince, passata, slices of mild salami, sliced boiled egg and cover in mozzarella and parmesan. Cover the top of the dish with foil. 6. Heat a fan forced oven to 160 degrees Celsius and cook for one hour or until the top is golden.

Multi-million dollar capital works, rate rises and increases in fees and fines

continued from front page The capital works program aims to see new public toilets built in Congupna, Mactier Gardens in Tatura and Arcadia Recreation Reserve and works carried out on roads, footpaths, kerbs and channels, lighting and outdoor furniture and signage, with highlights including $6.18M towards the Cosgrove 3 landfill site design and construction, $9.24M toward the Greater Shepparton Regional Sports Precinct, $3.32M toward stage two of Verney Road works (between Hawkins and Graham Streets), $2.49M towards various upgrades and renewal works at Aquamoves, $1.01M towards upgrading drainage in Shepparton East, $0.82M towards the expansion of Regional Saleyards and $0.82M towards replacing council’s finance systems. The rate rise, which will see the cents per dollar of capital improved value charged to each rateable property class increase by 5.6 percent, with total rates and charges balancing out at a 4.95 percent rise. But the rate capping model adopted by the Victorian Government will see that drop in the next budget to a 2.50 percent increase in rates, leaving council millions of dollars short to put toward capital works and services. The budget also outlines rises in fees and fines, which will see the cost of restumping or underpinning permits for buildings go from $380 to $390, a full day of childcare for Long Day Care Centres go from $92 to $96.20 and the normal registration fees of a dog or cat

will go from $120 to $130. The cost of on-street and off-street parking meters will also rise, going from $1.30 to $1.40 and most parking fines are set to increase seeing the fines associated with a vehicle stopped in a loading zone go from $148 to $152 and a vehicle double parked will be fined $91 instead of $90. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dennis Patterson said, “The budget has been developed around the 2013-2017 Council Plan priorities and is in alignment with the five Key Strategic Objectives of Active and Engaged Community (social), Enhancing the Environment (natural), Economic Prosperity (economic), Quality Infrastructure (built) and High Performing Organisation (leadership and governance) within this plan. “Council delivers over 150 services to the community through various program, activities grants and projects, which are aligned to the Strategic Resource Plan and resourced by the annual budget. Council must achieve a balance between those services the community desires and the funds available, which is an ongoing challenge. “To achieve these goals, the budget proposes an increase in total rates and ch a r ge s of 4.95 p erc ent , exclud i ng supplementaries, in the 2015/2016 financial year. This level allows council to maintain existing service levels, fund a number of new initiatives and continue to allocate additional funds to renew ageing infrastructure. The

MALAYSIA has become a major tourist destination, its capital Kuala Lumpur or KL as it is known locally offers a wide selection for tourists from around the world. Its landmark is the Petronas Towers, they stand tall over the city with a connecting bridge that offers incredible views over KL, unfortunately to go up to the bridge has become so popular that you have to book days in advance. You can tour most of the major sites with ease despite the incredible traffic including the national mosque, museum and palace, or just catch the monorail to Chinatown and get great views of the city along the way. If you want something different then why not visit the KL Zoo, only a taxi ride from the city, lots to see, not many tourists and plenty of space to relax in. If you are into shopping then you are in paradise, block by block of shopping malls and pricing is good and the locals are very friendly. If you want to get out of town then visit the Batu Caves, although Malaysia is predominantly Muslim, the Batu Caves are Hindu and quite spectacular, just climb the 270 steps to the caves’ entrance and see the colourful displays of Hindu deities. But KL and surrounds is just the tip of the iceberg as far as Malaysia is concerned, whether it’s Penang, Langkawi, Borneo or some quite spot in between you will always feel right at home, and the food is great. The next leg. Our ship had returned to Singapore to refuel and take on more passengers before heading off on its next leg to Hong Kong, and all points in-between. It was Sunday the 29th of March and dignitaries from around the world had come for the state funeral of Singapore’s first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew. Much revered by locals he is attributed with raising Singapore from a simple fishing village to a major contributor on the world stage. stands out from much of Asia. When he first took over many other nations said that he went too far, during the hippy era he banned long hair, offering a haircut or jail to those who opposed his rule. He wanted a clean city so littering and butting out cigarettes carried a heavy fine. Singapore today is an ordered clean city, was Lee Kuan Yew wrong or was he just a good father that wanted to train his children to be responsible adults? With the funeral underway much of the city is closed off to road traffic, the only way to get around is to go under or over, I chose over on the cable car. Operating since 1974 it takes you high above the city for panoramic views from Mount Faber to Sentosa Island. The island has become a major tourist attraction with Universal Studios, Madam Tussauds, aquarium, comic book characters and a 4D simulator ride plus a massive Casino complex, to mention just a few. If you want something different then head for the Gardens by the Bay. It’s a collection of green gardens from around the world but the big highlights are the Flower Dome, a massive structure featuring flowers from around the world but laid out in such a way it has an eye popping effect. The dome keeps its flowers and visitors cool no matter what the weather outside. Next is the Cloud Forest, again under a weather tight dome. You are greeted by a huge waterfall and an incredible array of plants and puffs of cloud drifting across this multi-storey display. Daughter follows proud Tristar Medical’ promotes Practice Nurses mum into nursing FAMILY NURSING PRIDE… Josephine Ford and her daughter Sonya Mathewson are two of the exceptional nurses who work at GV Health. SONYA Mathewson and her mum, Josephine Ford are two of the exceptional nurses who work at GV Health. Josephine’s husband was involved in an accident more than 15 years ago, which resulted in a spinal injury. The nursing care that her husband received inspired her to a career in nursing. She has worked in the GV Health operating theatre for the last 15 years. When Josephine’s father became sick and was on life support in intensive care, Josephine and her daughter Sonya were by his side to lovingly care for him. “It was while caring for my Grandpa that I decided I wanted to be a nurse like my mum, and devote my life to helping others,” said Sonya. Sonya was accepted to Latrobe University in 2004 to study nursing. However, she became seriously ill and was not able to continue with her study. Once well, she studied to become a Division

1 Nurse and now works in the GV Health intensive care unit. Josephine said that while she is incredibly proud of all three of her daughters, it is wonderful to see Sonya follow in her footsteps and develop her nursing skills. “After everything she has been through, fighting her illness and persevering with her studies, to see her walk across that stage in her robes and receive her qualification brought tears to my eyes. “It’s amazing to watch her, she is a fantastic nurse, a beautiful person and I’m so incredibly proud of her achievements,” said Josephine. Sonya said she, “Enjoys working with her mother, having each other to lean on, but has to remember to call her ‘Josephine’ and not ‘mum’ at work.” GV Health has a team of outstanding nurses working throughout the organisation. On International Nurses Day, Tuesday May 12, 2015, we say thank you for all that you do to care for our community.

PRACTICE Nurse, Joanna Hooper plays an important support role in local practices, both in Kialla and in Nagambie’s Tristar Medical Centres. The concept of employing Practice Nurses across the country was born out of a need to allow greater access to our limited resources of rural and regional General Practitioners. The role of a Practice Nurse is to release some of the pressure of time constraints on our local GPs. “Practice Nurse’s can assist a centre’s GP with all aspects of primary healthcare and provide GPs with an incredibly valuable asset; a highly skilled clinical colleague that can provide patients with education,

information and co-ordination of visits to allied health services as well as measure and monitor patients in preparation of their consultation with their GP. THE Big V Grand Final rematch between Shepparton Gators and Casey Cavaliers was given a colourful reprise at the weekend, when the two teams took each other on wearing Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation laces. As well as providing awareness for the importance of organ and tissue donation, the match saw $1 collected for every ticket sold at the door, which lead to more than $100 being raised for the foundation. Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation Founder, Allan Turner said, “Both teams wore laces to help raise awareness of the importance of tissue and organ donation, which was fantastic. It’s great to have such support and kind donation from the basketball community. “I have a pretty strong connection with basketball, after having played the game for 21 years, so to see them provide this support at a grassroots level is very humbling. “The game ended up being a draw and then went into overtime, but the Shepparton Gators couldn’t repeat the result from the grand final match and the Casey Cavaliers took the match by a few points.” Greater Shepparton Basketball Association Manager, Tony Long said, “This was a great initiative for us. We’ve known Allan for a long time and we all know about Zaidee. We’re just doing our bit to help spread the message of the importance of organ and tissue donation.”

Keep up with the kids AS a new mum, it can be hard keeping up with young children, but a new, free pilot exercise program to help local mums reach the suggested target of 300 minutes of exercise per week, was launched in Shepparton today. The Keeping up with the Kids program is

targeted at mothers with ‘kids’ aged under six who live in the Kialla area and will give participants the chance to take part in activities they choose, as well as join in group activities and nutrition sessions. Greater Shepparton City Council’s Acting Manager Active Living, Anthony Nicolaci

encouraged people to get involved in the program. “Aside from improving physical health and wellbeing, we also want to educate people as to what facilities are available and how you can access them. “We have identified a range of activities participants might be interested in such as joining a social netball or tennis competition, walking group, beach volleyball, Seven Week Challenge, boot camp or meditation/yoga classes through Aquamoves.

By David Lee IT’S been a hard road for local BMX Champion, 21 year old Brandon May but after breaking the C3, C4, C5 and C7 vertebrae in his back and neck in 2011 he has made a miraculous comeback, taking out the #1Australia title at the Subaru BMX National Championships at the weekend, and now has his eyes set on the world titles in Belgium. While rain washed out the track in Brisbane and saw his event postponed to Saturday, the damp didn’t deter Brandon, who took the lead from the first corner and finished the race with a 2.54 second lead. Brandon said, “It had rained more than 330mm on the Friday, but the tracks were a lot dryer by Saturday. “I was up against 46 others in the 20 inch race on Saturday and against 20 others in the cruiser race on Sunday. “After my accident a couple of years ago I thought about giving it away, but I just couldn’t stay away and I’m glad that I didn’t. “I’ve never had a number one before. I’ve had seconds and thirds but this is my first time getting number one. “I am hoping to now go on to Belgium for the world titles, competing against worldwide racers. It costs just off $5,000 to be able to compete there so I am trying to raise the funds to be able to have the chance to represent Australia and hopefully bring home the number one world title. THE local Interleague Squad set to face off against Geelong has been named, with all Goulburn Valley Football League (GVFL) clubs having a representative in the initial 34 players that have been named. Benalla has the most representation with seven players chosen for the squad followed by Kyabram with six and Seymour with five. Interleague Squad Coach, Travis Ryan is excited for the opportunity of taking back the number one ranking and believes he has the

opportunity to put together a team who can win. “The GOTAFE GVFL has a plethora of quality available to be selected in this squad with many quality players missing out, but I believe that the selection panel has managed to pick the best mix of players which will give us the best chance of winning the game in May.” The squad will train together in Seymour on Wednesday, May 13 and at Deakin Reserve on Wednesday, May 20 with the game to be played on Saturday, May 23 at 2pm.
