PARKRUN EVENT A HIT WITH LOCALS… Shepparton Parkrun has almost doubled in size since it began just over a year ago, with attendance rates breaking records week after week. As it grows in popularity, the event hopes to become a permanent part of the Victoria Park Lake precinct. Photo: Tara Bell.
Parkrun popularity explodes in Shepparton THE locally operated Shepparton Parkrun event has grown in popularity, more than doubling its attendance rates in the first year of operation. The local, free event as a part of Parkrun world wide, has popularised goal driven time trial exercise and has almost single-
handedly created its own community within a community. Parkrun itself started in London 11 years ago before being brought to Australia in 2011. The event only began here in Shepparton in January 2014. Continued on page 10

New play to celebrate local community TA L E N T E D lo c a l Play w r ig ht , Joh n Head has been hard at work on his latest masterpiece, with ‘Dookie’ to be performed as part of the program of events during the 2016 Shepparton Festival. John said, “I’ve always liked the word Dookie, I’ve always thought that it was an inspired name for a play. I like the space, I like the environment, the town has a nice vibe to it. “So the story goes that there was a soldier returning from Afghanistan, he is bringing a mate who has been wounded over there and they return to Dookie to recuperate. “The names are commemorative of actual names on the honour roll of the World War I plaque at Dookie. The play celebrates the real names, it goes through the real details surrounding those men. It not only talks about war down the ages but also the effects on communities and what the healing properties of the community are in helping to recover not only war veterans but also refugees. It combines serious issues with art. “With that in mind, we’ve recruited the help of STAG, GV Orchestra and the Shepparton Festival as a par tnership arrangement to give some of our local talent a platform to show off their stuff. “It’s exciting. New art like this is a great way to tell a story. It’s based on local soldiers, it’s based on real events and themes, but the story is fictitious. There’s a lot of serious aspects of it, along with some good comedy. “T here’s some ver y good things to celebrate about our community and it’s nice to be able to do it in an artistic format. It’s very Australian, very local and it’s a real celebration of the community.”
PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL ART… Shepparton Playwright, John Head is currently recruiting for his latest stage masterpiece, ‘Dookie’ to be performed during the 2016 Shepparton Festival. Photo: Alicia Niglia.
“If people are interested they can still get involved. Auditions will be held on Saturday, 24th and Sunday, 25th October, we’re after local talent for the cast as well as to support the orchestra.”
For more information on the play or the auditions, contact John Head by emailing joh n h@ mcmed ia.com.au or phone 0418 301 606.

Remaining vigilant the key to crime prevention AFTER a recent spate of crimes to businesses in Shepparton as well as reports of burnt out cars in north Shepparton and Kialla areas, The Adviser spoke with Shepparton Police to find out what people in the community can do to protect themselves against events like nuisance damage right through to the more serious theft of motor vehicles. Shepparton Police Senior Sergeant, Dean Williams said, “A lot of the costs associated with damage to homes and businesses fall below the cost of the insurance excess fee, so it all comes back at a cost to the owners or the business people rather than insurance. “60 percent of all vandalism is targeted at residential homes. This includes smashed windows, letterbox damage etc. Residential property is often our worst location for wilful damage. “What people can do to protect their properties is to remain vigilant, do not leave items unattended or in plain sight, particularly that which are of value. Fences on properties also often act as a deterrent for opportunistic crime or damage. “There has actually been a drop in damage to property in Shepparton from 952 reported cases in the 2013/2014 financial year compared to 669 reported cases in 2014/2015. This is good news, but unfortunately it’s still way too many. “In relation to car theft, again people can help deter these types of crimes by not keeping valuables within view. Lock your cars! It may sound obvious, but over 50 percent of cars which get broken into or stolen are unlocked. Also, don’t have your car keys located in a prominent place within your home. We’ve often had incidents where thieves have broken into homes and been able to take off with the car as well because the keys were in an easily accessible area of the home. “Also give consideration to where you park you car. Well lit areas or secure areas act as a good deterrent. The majority of theft from cars is opportunist and easily prevented. “We would appeal to the public to report any suspicious behaviour, around 5 percent of the people we process are responsible for 70 percent of the crime reported across the area. It is those recidivous offenders who have no consideration to other people’s property, to their possessions and just have blatant disregard for the law who ruin it for the rest of us.” For more information on crime prevention in your area visit the crime prevention and community safety area of the Victorian Police

RESPONSE:
VET cuts leave students at risk
Dear Editor, In response to a recent article by The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Training, Skills and Apprenticeships, Steph Ryan said Daniel Andrews claiming that funding had been axed for Shepparton’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) program’s Workplace Learning Coordinators (WLC), the State Government has released the following statement: Workplace Learning Coordinators was a program funded by the Commonwealth Government under the National Partnership on Youth Attainment and Transitions. Following Federal Government cuts, the State Government provided funding to WLCs to the end of 2015. There has been no State Government cuts to this program. The Andrews Labor Government acknowledges the role of WLCs in their work with various organisations to establish and facilitate partnerships to support education, employment and quality work placements for young people. The Department of Education and Training is actively considering research findings in relation to WLCs and school industry engagement that would continue to support Victorian school students. Victoria to lead the way On legalised medical cannabis IN an Australian first, the Andrews Labor Government will legalise access to locally manufactured medicinal cannabis products for use in exceptional circumstances from 2017. Prior to the election, Labor committed to this change because no family should have to choose between breaking the law and watching their loved ones suffer. The Victorian Law Reform Commission was asked to advise how to amend the law in order to allow people in exceptional circumstances to safely access medicinal cannabis products. The Victorian Law Reform Commission’s Report on Medicinal Cannabis, tabled in Parliament during the week, included 42 recommendations and addressed key issues including: • Cultivation, manufacture and supply of high quality medicinal cannabis products within Victoria • Patient eligibility • Appropriate clinical oversight involving specialists, general practitioners, nurses and pharmacists • The need for ongoing research and clinical trials.
A key step to enabling access to medicinal cannabis will be to establish cultivation and manufacturing industries in Victoria to support an ongoing and reliable supply of medicinal cannabis for patients. The Government will begin a cultivation trial at a Victorian research facility, which is overseen by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources. The Commission also recommends that eligibility for the scheme be based on the following conditions and corresponding symptoms: • Severe muscle spasms or severe pain resulting from multiple sclerosis • Severe pain, nausea, vomiting or wasting arising from cancer, HIV/AIDS (of the treatment thereof) • Severe seizures resulting from epileptic conditions where other treatment options have failed or have intolerable side effects • Severe chronic pain with the approval of two specialists. As a priority, the Government will provide access to medicinal cannabis for children with severe epilepsy in early 2017.

Parkrun popularity explodes in Shepparton continued from front page SHEPPARTON Park Run Event Director, Allan Connolly was first introduced to Parkrun by a friend and began attending events in Craigieburn when the idea to bring the event to Shepparton was born. Allan said, “Grand Final Day two years ago was when I made the decision that ‘yes, I like this idea and I’m going to do it’. I met with Greater Shepparton City Council that week. It was definitely something which was out of my comfort zone, but I felt so passionate about the event after just three runs that I felt compelled to do it.” Parkrun Shepparton started its first event with approximately 70 attendees and now in its 90th and 91st weeks, Parkrun is attracting up to 154 people each week. Allan together with his team have now proposed to Greater Shepparton City Council that the event become permanent, with permanent markers around the track for the future.
Allan said, “Because it’s a community event, the whole community can use the track when they want to. The runners club often use it and so too do members of the community for training. “C ou nci l have been wonder f u l i n supporting the event so far and we hope that permanent markers will secure the event for many years to come. “Parkrun promotes personal improvement, it doesn’t’ matter if you walk, run or crawl, at the end of the day, just to improve your time is the reward. The event is open to all ages and we’ve recently become an all abilities event, which is fantastic. “We’re very excited about the future of Parkrun here in Shepparton.” Parkrun is a free, organised, weekly, 5km timed event which is operated in Shepparton and around the world. The event is open to everyone and is safe and easy to take part in. For more information, visit http://www. parkrun.com.au/shepparton

Better Services and upgrades A must for our trains continued from front page “AS many people know we continue to have problems with train services, including the cleanliness of our trains, the inability to connect to wireless internet, poor air conditioning on trains, late arrival and departure times, stations without PA systems and much more. It is important we have clean, reliable and safe access to Melbourne through our train services,” Sharman Stone said. “Minister Allan is soon to release the first Regional Network Development Plan for Victoria. Many from the Goulburn Valley participated in the consultation. The plan should provide the first regional public transport strategy for Victoria. Minister Allan was reminded of the poor condition of the rail line, especially between Violet Town and Seymour where canteen staff were taken off at Violet Town and put back at Seymour because of the rough ride. “Regional Victorians deserve to have world-class rail services and I have stressed this point to Minister Allan, who being a

Semi permanent cosmetic makeup The real difference with Dominique Rachelle CPDA from Dominique Rachelle’s World of Beauty What is the difference between Cosmetic Tattooing and semi permanent cosmetic makeup? Firstly, the most important thing to know is that semi permanent cosmetic makeup is not a tattoo. With semi permanent cosmetic makeup there is no ink, only cosmetic pigment which is safe to put into the skin and has the same ingredients as normal makeup. A state of the art digital cosmetic machine will only allow the pigments to enter the second layer of the skin, giving a soft natural appearance to compliment your face. What is feathering? When you’re referring to ‘feathering’ the correct name is ‘hair simulation strokes’. Basically, hair simulation strokes are just that! They are best suited to people who have hair, but with gaps or uneven elements. The strokes aim to fill areas of natural hair separation with very natural results. A consultation will determine the right method for you as an individual.
What are the benefits of semi permanent cosmetic makeup? For people who have loss of eyebrow hair and shape, who are short sighted and have trouble applying makeup, who exercise and play sport, who have oily skin, whose eyeliner always smudges or even those who suffer hair loss through illnesses such as cancer. There are lots of reasons why semi permanent makeup is a desirable option for women of all ages. What are the benefits of utilising a locally based internationally trained expert? I have more than 20 years experience specialising in semi permanent cosmetic makeup. I obtained my certification in America as a CPDA in 2014. I’m passionate about my industry and the local area and because I’m based locally, my clients can feel assured that I am easily accessible. Consultation is a vital part of the process in achieving the right shape and colour for you.

WHAT started out as a backyard project has turned out to be the ultimate in family cars, with local car enthusiast, Jason Traianidis and his whole family falling in love with the 1965 Dodge Phoenix. Jason has owned the Dodge for 15 years now and prior to that, it had been owned by Jason’s brother-in-law for around the same amount of time. Jason said, “The car is actually an original Shepparton car. My brother-in-law bought it off of a local family whose grandfather had owned it since new, back in the day. It had been their original family car, before passing it down to their son and our family bought it after that. “I’ve always liked the Dodge and at the time, I was ready for a project and it was a

great opportunity. The Dodge Phoenix is a bit different to the Chevrolets of that era, which were more popular. There’s not too many of the Dodge Phoenix’s getting around and I like that.” The car wasn’t in bad condition when Jason acquired it, it just needed some upgrades and a little bit of care. To date, the project has been a labour of love with a complete restoration including engine overhaul, paint, interior, breaks and detailing throughout. Now a days, Jason shows the car at automotive events from time to time, but mainly he just likes to get it out on the weekend and drive it with his family. Jason said, “The kids love it and I just genuinely love driving it, I don’t want it to just sit and look pretty. It’s a driving car.”

What you need to know about your transmission
TRANSMISSION KNOW HOW… Pictured, Goulburn Valley Automatic Transmission Service Proprietor, Steve Dempster. Photo: Alicia Niglia.
YOUR vehicle’s automatic transmission is often overlooked when it comes to car servicing. Transmission repairs these days can run into thousands of dollars and prevention really is the only way to save on costly repair bills. Goulburn Valley Automatic Transmission Service Proprietor, Steve Dempster said, “We often get asked by people if they should have a transmission oil cooler fitted in their vehicle. “The fact is, the biggest cause of failure in automatic transmissions is heat. We recommend all vehicles that tow or experience heavy duty use have an external transmission oil cooler fitted. “Transmissions can suffer increased wear and tear from the extra stress of loads required when towing or if the vehicles are used in heavy duty or extreme conditions. “Some late model vehicles can also suffer from factory cooler failure which results in significant damage to the transmission. An external cooler is highly recommended for these vehicles. “Transmission replacement or reconditioned units are covered by our nationwide 2 year/50,000km warranty. All services and repairs carried out by us are not only backed by our extensively experienced and trained technicians but are also guaranteed for a minimum of 12 months for workmanship. Parts are also covered by Manufacturers Warranty. You can rest assured that any repairs we carry out are of the highest quality and will keep you running from ‘a’ to ‘b’ without any added hassle or further cost. “Regular servicing of your car’s transmission can help prevent these future costly repairs. It is recommended to have your transmission serviced annually or every 20,000 to 30,000km.” For more information on all of your transmission and servicing needs or for an obligation free transmission check and quote, go to Goulburn Valley Automatic Transmission Service at 12 Mercury Drive, Shepparton or phone 5821 6911.
New kerbside green lid bin service GREATER Shepparton City Council will introduce a full organic kerbside collection service for food scraps and garden waste from November 16. Greater Shepparton Cit y Council is introducing the new service to reduce the amount of food and garden waste going into landfill. The new service is a convienient and affordable way for residents to quickly and easily dispose of food and garden waste. Greater Shepparton Cit y Council Councillor, Jenny Houlihan said, “A number of Greater Shepparton residents already have a green lid bin and we will be delivering an additional 5,700 bins to more residential properties within the municipality. “The full year service charge will be $78 but for the 5,700 residents receiving a green lid bin for the first time the charge this year will be adjusted to $48.60 because they will not have had the service for a full year. “Residents with a 240L red lid bin can save $204 per year if they downsize to a smaller red lid bin, and use the 240L green lid bin and 240L recycling bin. Making these changes can save money while also improving the environment,” said Cr Houlihan For more information, visit www.greatershepparton.com.au or call 5832 9700.

fitness A diet that isn’t a diet at all WHEN most people hear the word ‘diet’ they think of fads and hard work that gets you nowhere, but the best diet to follow isn’t a diet at all, it’s simply healthy eating. While we all know that healthy eating is no secret, it is actually amazing to learn that you don’t have to give up all the things that you love to eat, ultimately it comes down to slightly better choices in ingredients, portion control and ‘yeah’ you will have to at least cut back on the amount of chocolate, potato chips and fats that you consume. This all might sound daunting, but it is actually quite simple to get into a regime and figure out just what works for you. And really, that’s what a ‘no diet, diet’ is all about; discovering just what works for you. The first thing you need to do is come up with a weekly meal plan. You can still have your steak, spaghetti, chicken schnitzel and pies; all you need to do is make a few minor modifications. Instead of breadcrumbs, egg and milk to crumb the chicken use a low-fat greek yoghurt and dried polenta. And instead of a 500g steak, control the portions and cut it in half and add some mashed peas and salad to go alongside it. When it comes to the pie you might be surprised at how delicious a turkey, leek and thyme pie is and just how easy it is to
make, and the best part of all is, it is healthier than the steak pies you buy from the bakery. Secondly, you need to make sure you’re eating breakfast, a mid morning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack and end your day with dinner. Snacks can be anything from grapes, strawberries, apples, bananas and crackers with tomato, avocado and cheese, to a whole range of other ‘go’ foods, and even though it may seem like you’re actually eating more, you’re correcting your body’s metabolism, which will help to burn energy more efficiently. After a week or two on your meal plan you will notice the kilos starting to shed, and all without exercising.

Sky Muster, broadband satellite now in orbit N BN successf u l ly lau nched it s f i rst broadband satellite into orbit recently, providing for one of the world’s mostadvanced communication satellites to play a critical role in fast broadband access to around 400,000 Australian homes and businesses. Over the coming months the satellite will undergo final technical testing ahead of its commercial launch scheduled for mid-2016. Once available, the service is expected to provide wholesale speeds significantly faster than those currently used now. NBN CEO, Bill Morrow said the satellite will provide access to fast broadband for
the parts of Australia that need it most. “With the launch of Sky Muster, we’re one step closer to changing the digital face of our nation. “The ability to video-conference friends and family, study courses online and visit doctors from your lounge room will all be possible in areas which have traditionally struggled to access basic internet services like online banking and shopping. “Many homes and businesses in regional and rural Australia still rely on dial-up level speeds and have little or no access to a commercial broadband service – this satellite will help to close the divide and ensure no-one gets left behind.”

BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD… Pictured, Shepparton Canoe Club President, Barry Bell with Shepparton Canoe Club’s rising juniors star, 12 year old Brooklyn Andresen. Photo: Alicia Niglia.
Shepparton’s newest star on the rise YOUNG local Shepparton boy, Brooklyn Andresen is quickly making a name for himself in the world of competitive canoing, having recently brought home six medals from the Australian Junior Outrigger National Titles and Trans Tasman Series held on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. At the age of 12 and after only having joined the sport a mere 8 months ago, Brooklyn is showing potential beyond his years according to Shepparton Canoe Club President, Barry Bell. Barry said, “He took home all of the individual events he competed in as well as the doubles event and got a silver in the teams event, he did incredibly well. “I knew he’d come home with some bling, but I never expected him to do as well as he did. It was wonderful.” Brooklyn has done all of his training here in Shepparton as well as with Shepparton’s affiliate canoe club in Echuca.
Barry said, “I did all that I could with Brooklyn (in terms of training), but we ended up enlisting the help of specialist coaches from Melbourne to fine tune his technique. His Melbourne coaches really commented on his natural ability and his potential. It was evident to see.” Brooklyn said, “I was definitely surprised by my success at the titles. I certainly didn’t expect to get six medals.” Barry really praised the facilities here in Shepparton for providing a platform for a talented individual like Brooklyn to shine. B a rr y said , “T he facilities here in Shepparton have really been wonderful for training Brooklyn. He couldn’t have achieved what he’s achieved training in the river alone and the facilities are a credit to Greater Shepparton City Council. “We’ve recently been fortunate to receive grants from Greater Shepparton City Council and from Vic Health which has allowed us to
purchase further life jackets and a full set of paddles to encourage new members as well.” As for the future for Shepparton’s newest rising star, Brooklyn said right now he is concentrating his efforts on an upcoming relay event with his fellow canoeists from inland canoeing, while also training for the
upcoming Riverland Paddling Marathon in South Australia next year where he plans to compete in the 50km solo leg of the marathon. All of that before returning to sprint training to defend his title in the under 14s National Titles late next year.
Bushrangers preliminary squad announced THE Murray Bushrangers have announced their preliminary squad for the upcoming 2016 TAC CUP Pre-Season. Over 100 Talented Footballers from across the region will commence training on Sunday, November 15 at the Wangaratta Sports Development Centre. Talent Manager, Lee Fraser explained the rigorous process in selecting the squad, “Club recruiters have been planning the 2016 list for months with TAC CUP, Under 16 Country Championships, local football and interleague form all factored into the process. “We have also conducted a series of athletic tests throughout the course of the year to
ensure players have the athletic ability to perform at TAC CUP level. “Each of these young men have a fantastic opportunity to develop their football, fitness and personal attributes as they confront a variety of challenges across the 5 month pre-season. “As a Football Club, we are fully aware that it takes extraordinary commitment from young footballers and their families to participate in our program, we look forward to providing an environment where each player improves through hard work and dedication.
“Whilst there will be a number of players disappointed not to make the squad, we encourage all of them to continue to work hard on their fitness and skill level, we will continue to monitor their progress at local level. History suggests that a number of these players will develop and come into squads either throughout the season or in coming years.” The Murray Bushrangers Pre-Season Squad is represented by 36 clubs across 10 leagues, demonstrating the contribution made by volunteer coaches throughout the region. Mr Fraser continued, “As a club we
understand the role that local clubs play in producing talent, we are lucky that so many of these players have great mentors and role models within their local football environments. “We look forward to working with our squad of players by providing a unique opportunity to compete against the most talented young footballers in the country.” The Pre-Season will commence on Sunday, November 15 at the Wangaratta Showgrounds and will include a series of fitness tests under the watchful eye of Murray Bushranger’s High Performance Manager, Matt Glossop.
New Dojo helping to bully proof the Goulburn Valley SHEPPARTON’S local Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy is now operating their popular Bullyproof Program from their new custom fitted Dojo in Kialla. Head Instructor, Scott Butler said, “We’ve modelled our dojo on the original Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy dojo in California, and we’ve worked very hard on the prep work, undertaking intensive certified training instructor courses in order to become an accredited certified training centre. “The Gracie system is not a new system, it’s been around since 1925, it’s older than a lot of karate styles. “I’ve been practising martial arts for 32 years now and I’m passionate about the benefits of the systems. “The philosophy is simple, the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy Bullyproof Program gives children the tools for physical self defence so that they are very confident that should a fight or a confrontation take place, they can defend themselves. “Once children feel sure that physically, they’re going to be ok, we can layer in the verbal assertiveness and strategies they can use to defuse the situation and to put an end to the harassment. “The goal isn’t to hurt the bully, the goal is to control, negotiate and essentially neutralise the situation without physical fighting. “The Jiu-Jitsu methods teach through games and the repetition of the games, which positively reinforces correct techniques for defence. “Each class is age based, because the fact is a 5 to 7 year old child is going to learn differently than an 8 to 13 year old child. “We believe there’s a real need for a bully proof program like this in the area and it’s ideal for families who want to

be proactive about bullying or who are concerned about their kids not being able to handle themselves in different situations. “Bullying is a big problem at all ages and the confidence that they get from these programs is absolutely amazing. “Jiu-Jitsu is ideal for all ages and fitness levels, we have adult, men’s and women’s programs as well as children of all ages. We encourage the whole family to get involved and build a team approach to learning together. It’s a dedicated
art, but for those who are willing to put in the effort the rewards are enormous.” Classes run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for juniors 5 to 7 year olds, 8 to 13 year olds, 14 year old plus and adults men and women. Classes are open to all abilities and fitness levels. The Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy is located at 7953 Goulburn Valley Highway, Kialla.
