IGA welcomes council’s decision

By David Lee AFTER Greater Shepparton City Council adopted the Commercial Activities Centres Strategy, albeit an amended strategy, last week, Fairleys SUPA IGA are continuing to move forward with expansion plans with a little less weight on its shoulders.

During the ordinary council meeting held on Tuesday last week, Greater Shepparton City Council, Cr Jenny Houlihan proposed an amendment to the strategy, which was carried 6 to 1 after much debate on the topic.

Festival chair, Mike Molloy says this year the Shepparton Festival features a range of great, free events suitable for the whole family.

“The Mass Art Class and Future Postal Service are two fun, free events happening

during the festival, that children of all ages can participate in.

“The Mass Art Class on Sunday, March 13 is an Australian Book of Records attempt to have the largest art class, hosted by prominent Tasmanian artist Roz Wren, right here in Shepparton.

“We fell 50 registered participants shy of the record last year, and this year we want to ensure we beat Brisbane’s record

of 488 this year to coincide with our 20 year celebrations.

“You don’t need to be an ar tist to participate, all experience and skill levels are welcome and all materials will be provided including paints and canvases.”

An emporium of goods joins Renew Shepparton A M B U L A NC E S i n Mooroopn a a nd Numurkah are set to have Navmans fitted, after a second fundraising effort by local businesses, driven by Shepparton Taxis, saw the purchase of the 4 navigation devices.

The donation amount of $1,020 was raised by nine local businesses and the Navmans were purchased at a discounted rate, thanks to the generosity of The Good Guys.

Ambulance Victoria group manager Western Hume, John Morris said, “All of our ambulances are fitted with Navmans in

Shepparton thanks to the prior fundraising efforts, so this will allow us to spread the donations around the region.

“It’s good to see the community and ambulance working together to raise these funds to allow for the purchase of these devices, which assist in locating cases.

“All of our cars do have emergency services maps in them to ensure drivers take the most direct route, but these Navmans will help to work alongside that.

“We are very appreciative of Shepparton Taxis and their donators.”

RENEW Shepparton program has just seen its newest addition to the program, with KE Emporium opening its doors on Monday.

Following the successful continuance of stores including Vintage Chics, Lost Shepparton and DOTZ Educational Aids Products, KE Emporium, located in the Harris Scarfe plaza beside DOTZ Education Aids Products, will offer something unique to the local community, stocking organically grown teas, bath salts made in Daylesford, vintage giftware, esoteric style books and candles.

Owner, Kitty Rees said, “I am driven to support small businesses. I want to make sure that anything grown and made locally are put into the spotlight and make sure people are aware to the fantastic products created locally.”

Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry executive officer, Lucy Cerrone said, “It’s great to see that the program is gaining momentum. We are also currently working on a fifth store to open, which is very exciting.

“We have also now secured new spaces in Wyndham Walk, Wyndham Street, Tirana City Walk which are all very central and we need involvement of new enterprises which are not conflicting with existing businesses.

“The success of the Renew Shepparton program hinges on landlords getting involved and we are still looking for more to come on board.”

Holistic approach to women’s health

By David Lee A FIRST of its kind practice offering a hol ist ic approach to women’s hea lt h opened its doors last week, offering women across the Goulburn Valley access to a centre specifically designed for women’s health issues.

T h e S h e p p a r t o n Wo m e n’s H e a l t h Centre, located at 100-104 Corio Street i n S heppa r ton , i s t he bra i nch i ld of g y naecologist and obstetrician, Dr Margreet Stegeman, who has been working in the area for 14 years and practicing for 16 years.

T he new centre will bring together

specialists in the fields of physiotherapy, psychology, pap smear nursing, as well as pathologists and GPs and will offer services including advice and treatment of fertility issues, menstrual problems, polycystic ovarian syndrome, sexually transmitted infections, per-conception counselling, per-menopausal complaints, antenatal ser vices, endometriosis, continence issues, contraception issues, prolapse issues and all psycholog ical aspects of women’s health.

Dr Stegeman spoke with The Adviser, saying she had seen a gap in the services in the region, which sparked her to open the doors of the specialised clinic.

“There have been a lot of local women who travelled to Melbourne for some of these services and I saw a need for it in Shepparton.

“The breadth of services we are offering under one roof is a first for the city of Shepparton.

Local grower appears on prime time LOCAL Ardmona based fruit grower, Rocky Varapodio has gone from the farm gate to prime time, after being selected to appear in upcoming product promotional segments for Coles created for the TV hit My Kitchen Rules.

For the past 15 years, Rocky has been growing a variety of stone fruit including plums in their state-of-the-art facility and supplying his product to Coles, which is why he was chosen to promote fresh products during the segment, which will air throughout the program’s season.

Rocky said, “It was great to go in-store and promote our produce, and more to the point, have an opportunity to put a grower’s face to the product. I think it’s a good thing for the consumer to see the grower behind the product on the shelf.

“It was nice to meet the contestants. I think it’s impressive that they give up a large chunk of their life to participate in a show over a long period, but they obviously enjoy it.”

During his product segment, Rocky said his rule for plums is to, “pack them with a chilled drink bottle to keep them cool.”

Coles general manager of fresh produce, Brad Gorman said Coles was pleased to support Rocky’s first time working with My Kitchen Rules because of his commitment to quality produce.

THE Australian Women’s Pilot Association will be flying into Shepparton on Sunday, February 28 to take part in the Goulburn Valley Aero Club Ladies Information Day. Local women interested in learning to fly or looking for a career in flying are encouraged to go along and have the chance to be taken up for a flight, and possibly take the reigns for a hands on flying experience.

Goulburn Valley Aero Club member, Lucy Simkin said, “There are many women in the industry and it’s nice to see, but there aren’t a lot in the Shepparton area. I know of young women in the area who are interested in learning to fly and this information day is a great place to start.

“It was the history and the beauty of it all that drew me to flying. It’s very peaceful up

there, especially when you are by yourself.

“But it also gives you the ability to travel and see a lot of people. It can be very social.

“For those who are interested in taking the step toward flying, this opportunity is a great way to go about it.”

By David Lee “THE Victorian Government doesn’t know Shepparton exists,” claimed Shadow Minister for Investment and Jobs and Trade, Craig Ondarchie during his visit to the region last week, where he met with both Greater Shepparton City Council and Moira Shire Council as well as visiting industry in the area, including Kreskas Bros Transport.

“My visit was about helping to assure the business community that we will focus on the needs of this area and will be putting policies together to take to the next election that will support regional employers,” Minister Ondarchie said.

“We spoke with employers such as Kreskas Bros Transport, who employs 80 full time staff, to provide them with the opportunity to help us build our policies. Essentially, it

was about asking what it is they want.

“We recognise that people want a job and want to keep a job and to do that we need to attract investment to the area, and in the way of the transport industry, we need improved road infrastructure.

“Greater Shepparton is aspirational and inspirational and we will be developing policies for skills and training tailored to the local area.”

Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell said, “There are challenges in the local workforce, including the transport industry, where there isn’t anything on offer in the way of skilling locals for these industries.

“Kreskas Bros Transport, for example, has an ageing workforce and needs young people to be able to come into the transport industry.”

Tatura to hold fire brigade junior state championships

By Grady Tyson FIRE - what? This is the response that is received when one tries to explain the technicalities of fire brigade competitions.

The perfect run, the perfect coupling of hoses, the perfect teamwork and making the perfect time are all essential.

Tatura Junior Fire Brigade U17 running team member, Grady Tyson said, “Fire brigade competitions require a multitude of different underlying skills that are unknowingly taught to the competitor during training and competition. The key ones for me are teamwork, individuality, precision, explosiveness and these are just the more obvious.

“Fire brigade competition is a very engaging sport. You may be thinking how could a sport be engaging if the events primarily go for less than 30 seconds? Well, aside from encouraging you to come to see the junior state championships to be held in Tatura at the end of February, my lips are sealed. I can, however, explain a bit more about it to get you curious.

“The community surrounding this sport, and the teams that compete, are all very cohesive. It is a friendly sport and we all generally know each other in one way or another, due to the many ‘demo’ competitions held across the state throughout each Summer season. But that doesn’t mean that the 80 teams across the state go easy on each other. Oh no. When the events are on it is very serious and competitive. After all, the pride of your brigade and your home town is at stake.

“Teams are awarded with winning places, not due to luck, but because of the amount

of time and effort that coaches, competitors and parents are prepared to put in. We have to communicate on the track, we have to communicate at training, the whole idea is to stay switched on and alert.

“The Tatura Fire Brigade junior team have been lucky enough to be the overall state champions of all age groups for the past two years. It would be great to continue this honour at our home track when 79 teams, including two from WA, compete once again at the annual state championships in Tatura.

“I really encourage all supporters and spectators to come along to the Tatura Racecourse on February 27 and 28 to see all the action. Entry is free and it’s a great day out for the whole family.”

IT is clear that Shepparton ACE College principal, Bronwyn Rose is very proud of her students and of the great leaps the college has made in the nine years since she’s been in the role.

Most recently, the college has added a Diploma of Community Services to the list of courses offered. “ We a r e a r e g i s t e r e d t r a i n i n g organisation and, as such, provide both accredited and non-accredited courses to senior secondary students and adults,” Bronwyn said.

“T hese i nclude Fou ndation Sk ills , Vocational E ducation and Trai n i ng, Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) and our Certificate IV in Liberal Arts, which is a Pathway to Tertiary Studies course.”

T he latest d iploma, a ter tia r y qualification, prepares people for the workplace in the caring professions and is completed within eighteen months.

Course participant, Kirsten Guilmartin said, “After September, we are given 100 hours of placement in four different facilities across town. This completes our work experience requirements and allows us to walk straight into a job.

“Our teachers have great networks to draw from, which means we don’t have to try to source our own placements once we graduate. Here, they’ve set it up really well.”

Bronwyn Rose has continued to respond to the needs of the students, providing courses and pathways which have been directed by their interests.

“We are also very pleased to be able to offer our students no government debt when they graduate, which I don’t believe is common practice,” Bronwyn said.

Meaning horn of plenty, Cornucopia will kick off this Saturday and run until May 22, showcasing works by established and early career artists.

A multidisciplinar y and t ranshistorical show, the exhibition teases out va rious st ra nds of i nvest igat ion around the production, consumption and distribution of food, as well as its metaphoric potential, socio-cultural uses and representation within art history.

An event the whole family will be consumed by ANOTHER free event for young families is the Future Postal Service in the Maude Street Mall on Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19.

Future Postal Service places children in control, transforming an adult dominated space into their playground, as they rotate through a series of stations involving big thinking, writing, drawing and delivery training.

Future Postal Service is best suited for children aged 5 and above and will be held in

the Maude Street Mall on Friday, March 18 from 4pm to 6pm and Saturday, March 19 from 10am to 2pm.

Andy Rigby’s Marimba workshop, on Saturday, March 5 from 10:30am will take children of all ages through the process of assembling and playing the African instrument.

IGA welcomes council’s decision continued from front page

By David Lee CR HOULIHAN moved that the council discourage the allocation of an additional 6,000m2 of retail floor space in the proposed north Shepparton site, 600m north of Fairleys SUPA IGA, as she believed it would have a detrimental affect on the CBD. Having recently released plans for a $30M expansion of their current site in north Shepparton, Fairleys and Michaels IGA general manager, Len Morabito expressed how much the company welcomed the council’s decision.

“We were committed to proceed whether it was adopted or not,

pending processes and approvals. Council seem to be pretty keen for us to go ahead.

“It was common sense for Cr Houlihan to make the amendment.

“What we need to do is prove that the proposed retail space just north of IGA is actually needed. Maybe in 2025 there may be the need for another centre built.

“At this stage, we are hoping to get something started in 18 months.

“It will be built in a two stage development. Stage one will see a brand new Fairleys SUPA IGA store constructed, with specialty

retail stores. In stage two, we will be looking at getting another supermarket in and further specialty stores or a medical centre.

“We can fit 14,000m2 of retail space where we are currently and including the surrounding acreage. During stage one, we will be looking at utilising about 8,000m2 of that retail space.

“We surveyed 1,000 customers and it was clear that they were saying they would prefer not to drive into town and that they would prefer to have a centre built in north Shepparton, so regardless of whether it is us or another centre it will most likely have an impact on the CBD, but going ahead and building two centres would be senseless.”

ART Psychotherapy Australia, through Dr Janine Brophy-Dixon (PhD) and Carla Temple, is offering an Introduction to Art Therapy weekend workshop and a nine weekend Art Therapy Training Course in Shepparton.

The course teaches a clear, powerful method that can be applied to all therapeutic interventions and is aimed at counsellors, allied health workers, educators and welfare workers, with an aim to educate how art creates meaning and promotes healing.

Janine is an art therapist, counsellor and researcher who has worked in prisons, drug and alcohol and indigenous services. She teaches at Australian College of Applied Psychology.

Carla is an art therapist with a special education background. She has conducted programs across Australia and internationally

and co-authored two books on bullying.

Janine said, “Art therapy is an essential tool for all professionals, generating change and insight to assist individuals to have a deeper understanding of themselves.”

Carla added, “Art therapy expresses what words cannot. This dynamic training will benefit those who are keen to move their professional practice forward.”

GREATER Shepparton City Council neighbourhoods aged services team recently underwent a quality review audit of their Home Care Package program and achieved a 100 percent compliance outcome.

The review was conducted by the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency on behalf of the Commonwealth Government.

Greater Shepparton City Council manager neighbourhoods, Amanda Tingay said, “It was pleasing to note that feedback on the day and the interim report, acknowledged the great service the team provides to older people in our community.

“As a department we critically reviewed our current practice against the standards and undertook a self-assessment process in preparation for the audit.

“Auditors spent time looking at our policies, procedures and files, measuring them for compliance with the standards. They also spent time with staff examining their practice and met with a sample of clients to hear their feedback regarding the service.

“We are ver y pleased to have achieved 100 percent compliance with the 18 expected outcomes.

“This result is testament to the hard work and dedication of staff towards providing quality care to eligible residents assisting them to remain living at home and in their community as independently as possible.”

Healthy ageing

IT’S a fact that as you age good health seems be harder to maintain. From blood pressure, eyes, bones and a range of other issues weighing on the shoulders of our ageing population, dealing with some of these issues can be just plain frustrating.

Bones As a natural part of ageing, our bones start to lose their density from our 40s onwards and osteoporosis comes into play. Osteoporosis is a condition that affects the bones, causing them to become weak and fragile and more likely to break (fracture). Follow these steps to keep your bones healthy.

Eat calcium-rich foods: While it is recommended that men and women over the age of 19 consume 1,000mg of calcium a day, women over 50 and men over 70 are recommended to have 1,300mg a day.

Go easy on the protein: Excessive amounts of meat, cheese and protein make body acid, which drains the body of calcium and weakens bones, so be sure to keep your diet balanced.

Be active: Bones get stronger when you use them. A great way to strengthen them is with weight bearing exercise. This includes walking, running, dancing, golf or tennis. It doesn’t include cycling or swimming (although swimming is good for staying flexible).

Blood pressure High blood pressure is common and often has no symptoms. At least one-quarter of adults have high blood pressure and while more than half of them are over 60, many are younger. Read these tips for keeping your blood pressure under control.

Exercise: Australians are recommended to get at

least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five times a week, such as walking, dancing, cycling or swimming.

Healthy eating: A healthy, balanced diet will help reduce your blood pressure.

Australians are recommended to enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from the five food groups every day.

Limit your alcohol intake: For healthy men and women, drinking no more than two standard drinks on any day reduces your risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury over a lifetime.

Eyes It is expected that most people will require glasses by the time they are 65, but by being sure you have regular eye tests, wear the right lenses and look after your eyes, there is a better chance your sight will remain clearer for longer.

How to keep your eyes healthy: As well as having regular eye tests and wearing the correct glasses, you can do several things to keep your eyes as healthy as possible. Eat well and plenty of vegetables, wear sunglasses to protect against harmful rays, use good lighting to ensure you are not straining your eyes, exercise to get the oxygen running around your body and to your eyes and of course be sure you sleep well to maintain lubrication and clear out any irritants gathered throughout the day.

Gearing up for the future THE number of persons aged 70 years and over in the Hume Region is expected to double by 2030 from 34,803 in 2016 to 60,913 in 2031. Statistics released recently

by Alzheimer’s Australia (Victoria) predict that more than 5,000 of these elderly people will be living with dementia in the Shepparton Local Government area by the year 2050.

These are alar ming s tatis tic s and Shepparton Village’s Board along with CEO, Kerri Rivett have been preparing the organisation to meet the growing needs of our community.

Research indicates that those with a dementia are more likely going to enter a residential care facility than those with other physical conditions related to ageing.

“The new 120 bed, state-of-the-art residential care facility announced late last year is being designed to meet the needs

of our ageing population but specifically for those with high level complex care needs and to support people living with dementia and Alzheimers. We will employ an additional 60 people.

“Dementia is everyone’s business. The new $34M building answers the significant and rapidly growing shortfall of this level of accommodation in the Hume region, a challenge recognised by many stakeholder including GV Health, the Depar tment of Social Ser vices and the Greater Shepparton City Council.

“We are currently running regular working sessions with the architects and our care services staff and managers to flesh out the design of the new building,” Ms Rivett said.

The new building is awaiting final planning approval from the Greater Shepparton City Council and work is on track to begin mid year.

By David Lee THERE is just something special about a 1953 Pontiac Belmont Chieftain Coupe and that is why local resident, Anthony Selva couldn’t turn it down when he saw it for sale in Canada one and a half years ago.

Anthony’s Pontiac is a two door, six cylinder, manual that has only seen just over 81,000 miles and as the third owner of the vehicle, Anthony says that there are some features that were ahead of its time.

“For something of its time it is pretty

good. It boasts heating under the driver’s seat and in the centre of the dash it has a speaker that doubles as a clock,” Anthony said. ”It has custom chrome trimming all over the interior and exterior. When I got it, I lowered it and put white line radial tyres on, but other than that it is in completely original condition.

“It is beautiful to drive. Actually, it drives like a new car.”

Anthony is currently selling the Pontiac.

Local gears up for junior championships RACING FOR SUCCESS… Local resident, Madi Healy, 11, is about to take on the Junior Victorian Motocross Championship and has her eyes on the Australian championships in late September.

By David Lee AT just 11 years old, local resident, Madi Healy is gearing up for success, recently winning her class in the motocross Shipwreck Coast 2 Day Open and now has her eyes set on the Junior Australian Motocross Championship later this year.

But before she can take on the Australian championships, Madi is getting revved up for the Junior Victorian Motocross Championship, which begins in mid March.

Madi said, “I have been riding since I was 3 years old and racing since I was 6 years old.

“My dad used to race when he was younger and my brothers got into it as well, so I thought I would give it a ago.

“The Victorian championships will be a bit more challenging this year, but I am

looking forward to it.

“There are four rounds in total in the Victorian championships and then I am hoping to take on the Australian championships in September.

“I am very grateful to my sponsors, AJ Motorcycles and Tune Tech Suspension for all of their support. Without them, I might not be able to race.

“I love everything about riding and beating the boys just makes it even better.”

Juniors called on Club honours to discover talent Shepparton royalty FIF T Y young footballers are set to discover their talents, when the third annual Murray Bushrangers Shepparton Talent Camp kicks off in the April school holidays.

The talent camp will consist of a series of football skill drills together with an insight into the area of high performance training and caters for young footballers born in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Murray Bushrangers talent manager, Lee Fraser said, “We give the kids an experience to see what it is like to be involved with the Murray Bushrangers and focus on their skill development, which they can continue to work on.

“From our point of view it’s good to see some of the talented kids in the region nice and early.

“Costs for the camp are $70 per child and include a talent camp shirt and high level coaching from Murray Bushrangers coaches and high performance staff.

“Spots are limited with registrations open until booked out. You can register online.”

HALF a century of home grown heroes were honoured at the weekend, with The Shepparton Club recognising eleven outstanding past and present champions from across Greater Shepparton and surrounding areas.

After months of deliberation the club sub committee, consisting of Vin Truscott, John Ross, Don Kilgour and Noel Hussey, decided on the superstars it considers outstanding achievers over the past 50 years.

Among those named on the inaugural ‘wall of fame’ in The Shepparton Club sports lounge was Max Carlos, Christine Dobson, Louise Dobson, Don Fairless, Steve

Fairless, Glenn James, Brett Lancaster, Sir John McDonald, Shaun O’Brien, Bruce Quick and John Thorsen.

The Shepparton Club general manager, Don Field said, “This wall of fame is a recognition of outstanding achievements in the community. These are people who have achieved great things in their various fields.

“Shepparton should be proud of these people.

“Next year we will reveal another four or five who will be recognised for their outstanding achievements in the Shepparton area.”
