Foxtel to document local murder case By David Lee IT WAS an emotional experience when I sat down with local resident, Heather Halsall to talk about why Foxtel is coming to Shepparton to interview her in a few weeks time. The topic of the documentary is a story that still haunts many today, the murders carried out by Raymond Edmunds…aka Mr Stinky. Heather’s connection to the murders is a tragic tale that began when her brother, Ian Duncan Ross Urquhart (affectionately known as Chilla) was falsely accused of the murder of his then girlfriend, Abina Madill and her work colleague Garry Heywood. Schools to benefit from $1.7M in funding SACRED Heart Primary School in Yarrawonga and St Mary of the Angels Secondary College in Nathalia are set to benefit from $1.7M in shared funding from the Coalition Government, which will help toward the construction of specialised learning areas. $1M will go towards supporting the construction of a year 5 and 6 leadership centre at Sacred Heart as well as the demolition of a relocatable building where the year 5s and 6s are currently receiving lessons. Construction on the new leadership centre will start in July this year and is expected to be completed in time for term one next year.

POTENTIAL STUDENTS ENJOY ACTIVITIES… La Trobe University Shepparton Campus was a hive of activity when potential students took part in the university’s orientation day activities. Photo: Supplied.

La Trobe welcomes new students LA TROBE University Shepparton Campus came alive and was a hive of activity during this year’s orientation program. Head of La Trobe University Shepparton Campus, Sue Nalder said, “We always look forward to welcoming our new students on campus, particularly to our new Agribusiness, Social Work and Education cohorts. This year our orientation program increased to three days to allow for more activities for new students. Students commenced on Wednesday with an official welcome followed by some icebreaker activities and campus tour,” Ms Nalder said. “The program is filled with activities to allow students to familiarise themselves with their courses, staff, support available at University and of course getting to know one another.” Ms Nalder said 16 experienced La Trobe students from the Shepparton Campus, known as ‘connects,’ also helped the new students to transition into university life.

Page 4 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1345 Wednesday, March 15, 2017

“Our connect program is very successful and this year we have mentors across every one of the courses we offer. These mentors stay in touch with new students for the first six weeks of semester to be on hand to answer any questions they might have about their new experiences at university,” Ms Nalder said. Seven Goulburn Valley students were also accepted into the ‘Aspire’ program locally, which is an early admissions program launched by La Trobe in 2014. Aspire acknowledges volunteering and community engagement efforts by students, if successful into the program – students receive an offer from La Trobe in September, before ATARs are released. “The Aspire students have made positive changes in their local community by volunteering. We have recognised this community involvement by selecting them into this early offer program,” Ms Nalder said.

Bypass action group keen to move forward SHEPPARTON’S Goulburn Valley Highway Bypass Action Group hosted a reception last week in demonstrating the on-going support for the Shepparton Bypass. The proposed bypass is a 36km northsouth route running west of Shepparton and Mooroopna and linking the Goulburn Valley Highway to the Midland Highway. The first stage is planned to run from the Midland Highway west of Mooroopna via Mooroopna-Echuca Road to Numurkah Road/ Goulburn Valley Highway north of Shepparton and is anticipated to cost approximately $260M. The Goulburn Valley Highway Bypass Action Group is strongly encouraging the State Government to allocate $20M to VicRoads in its 2017/18 budget to prepare a detailed business case, detailed design and land acquisition for stage one of the bypass in order for it to be shovel ready. Bypass Action Group chair, Peter Johnson said, “Our reception provided the opportunity to demonstrate extensive local

Page 6 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1345 Wednesday, March 15, 2017

government and industry support across the region for the bypass. The message was clear, local transport operators do not want their trucks thundering down High Street any more than local businesses and residents want them there. “We heard from a number of speakers who highlighted the benefits of the bypass in terms of improved safety on our roads, improved freight efficiency and enhancing the look and feel of Shepparton’s central business district. The need is irrefutable; we just need financial support to kick start construction.” Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dinny Adem said, “The action group and the broader Goulburn Valley region implores the State Government through its 2017/18 budget to invest in making stage one of the bypass a reality. “While yes the project is long overdue, as the Reception highlighted, the issues are intensifying so now is the time to make it happen.”

CAMPING FUN… Students from Mooroopna Secondary College were given the chance to enjoy all that agriculture has to offer during a camp project held last week, including doing soil science with presenter, Roger. Photo: Supplied

Students get the real ‘ag’ experience THIRTY-ONE year 9 students from Mooroopna Secondary College were given the opportunity to enjoy the camping lifestyle last week, when they heading out to Dookie to experience many aspects that encompass agriculture in the local university setting. The project was run as part of a collaboration between the Lighthouse Project, the Better Together Alliance and the University of Melbourne Dookie Campus. The students started their camp with what became a highlight, sensory and animal science exercise, during which they learned how the senses play an important role in the detection of grapevine and other agricultural pests and diseases. Student, Charli Montgomery loved that lecturer, Sonja Needs brought her dog to demonstrate just how clever dogs are at detecting aromas that we couldn’t even smell. Day two focused on working with sheep. During this time the students got their hands dirty and learnt how to handle sheep, assessing sheep health by condition scoring them, checking their teeth and weighing them. They watched sheep being shorn, learnt about different sheep breeds and fleece types where they had to rank fleece types for their softness,

Page 8 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1345 Wednesday, March 15, 2017

length and the quality. A walk up Mt Major provided a stunning backdrop to learn about soil science and assessing which soil type would be suitable for a range of agricultural purposes. Day three concentrated on all things dairy with an introduction to the dairy industry and the role it plays in the region. Student, Shakira Hinck said, “It was good to get out and walk around the dairy farm before watching the cows being milked in the robotic dairy.” Milk samples were collected for the laboratory activities to measure the mastitis count, where a low count is ideal because it means better quality milk and protein count. Milk is measured on protein content and farmers are paid on higher protein content. Students were also given the opportunity to make cheese. The students also got to experience life away from home with some having never been away from their family. They enjoyed great meals, learnt about food wastage after enjoying a box of odd shaped apples that were just as tasty as the ones from the supermarket and got to experience the majestic surrounds of the Dookie Campus.

Big smiles for major prize draw winner DRAWN from one of the biggest numbers of entries in the history of the giveaway, was Mary Beattie of Finley during the 2016 GMCU $30,000 Giveaway. When contacted by The Adviser immediately after the major prize draw, there was a slight pause. “You’re joking. I don’t believe it,” were Mary’s first words. When asked what she would spend her winnings on, she said a lounge suite would be at the top of her shopping list. Mary received a $5,000 GMCU debit card to spend at any of the 150 participating businesses from last year and a $5,000 holiday voucher, which she used to take a trip to New Zealand. Mary and her husband Ron retired from the farm into Finley a few years ago and shop regularly in Shepparton, but it was her spend at Suzanne Grae at Shepparton Marketplace that saw her named the major prize draw winner. Shepparton antiques and collectables fair THE Shepparton Antiques Fair is on again in 2017 with a host of new professional dealers as well as your old favourites. March 18 and 19 will see St Augustine’s Church hall transformed into an impressive showcase of antiques when dealers from all around the country combine for the 36th Annual Shepparton Antiques Fair. Organised by antiques dealer Mick Dalton, this fair is a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike. Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble to a grand Victorian chest. Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is enormous, enabling customers to view many different dealers all together under the one roof, instead of travelling to many different establishments. Dealers exhibiting at the fair also buy antiques during the fair. G eorgian and Victorian jeweller y, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, clocks, lamps, collectables and furniture, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector.

PRECIOUS ANTIQUES BIG AND SMALL… Enjoy some of the beautiful items on sale at the Shepparon Antiques and Collectables Fair this weekend. Photo: Supplied.

The Shepparton Antiques Fair is also a fundraiser for St. Augustine’s who will be providing delicious light lunches, morning and afternoon teas throughout the fair. The Shepparton Antiques Fair is open to the public from 10am until 5pm on Saturday 18 and from 10am until 4pm on Sunday March 19.

Admission is $9.00 for adults and i ncludes a lucky door pri ze ticket. Ac compa n ied ch i ld ren a re f re e. St Augustine’s Church hall is situated in Orr St Shepparton (off Knight St) behind the Anglican Church in Maude St. For any further information please contact Mick Dalton on 0428 446 534.

PAIN REVISITED FOR DOCUMENTARY… Local resident, Heather Halsall will be interviewed by Foxtel in a few weeks time, when they come to Shepparton to discuss how her brother was falsely accused of the murders carried out in Shepparton by Raymond Edmund…aka Mr Stinky. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

DELIVERERS NEEDED URGENTLY Earn pocket money while keeping active. Deliverers needed in Kyabram, Mooroopna, Shepparton South and Tatura. If you are looking for something to do on a Wednesday then this position is ideal for you and/or your family.

If this sounds like you, phone Cindy on 5832 8900 or drop into our office at 219-225 Wyndham St, Shepparton. Genuine enquiries only.

Foxtel to document local murder case continued from front page URQUHART was just 19 when Madill had attended a concert at Shepparton Civic Centre on February 10, 1966, and was to be picked up by Urquhart. But when Urquhart arrived he was told that Haywood had driven her home. The story of the two teenager’s disappearance began to unfold when they didn’t return home and Heywood’s FJ Holden was discovered in the main street of Shepparton with no occupants just before dawn the following day. The bodies of Madill and Heywood were discovered in bushland in Murchison East on Saturday, February 26. Haywood’s car was fingerprinted by police, which would eventually become the piece of evidence they needed to catch Mr Stinky, but that wasn’t until 1985.

For years, Urquhart was tormented and brutally beaten by police until he decided to leave Shepparton to escape the ridicule and accusations, eventually making his way to Singapore, where tragically at the age of 23 he was killed in a motor vehicle accident. Heather said, “I helped to raise my brother and we grew up learning the importance of principals, morals and respect. “He was just a kid and the way he was treated was brutal. He was made to feel like he had to confess to something he wasn’t guilty of. “Every day was a struggle. It’s terrible to think that he passed away never knowing who the real killer was and thinking that everyone still blamed him. “Mr Stinky has done some terrible things and so I am doing the interview with Foxtel to hopefully help others get some closure.”

GVL chairman, David Roff is excited at the direction the league is now heading. “The enthusiasm at the board table last night was palpable for the unified structure and for the opportunity to work towards a shared vision for our clubs,” David said. “When the four concepts were presented to clubs option two received the most support and this choice was reflected in the feedback from fans and supporters via the online poll. This made the choice of the Board an easy one to ratify and formally adopt the branding. “Thank you to GOTAFE for their support and work in developing the logo and I am also very pleased to announce that they have extended their partnership to also embrace netball. “The new entity will therefore officially be called the GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League.” “Our relationship with GOTAFE continues to grow and this is just another step in that relationship working for the benefit of football, netball and the community,” David said.

Sidebottom honoured in special mixed club matches THE senior and junior Shepparton & Youth Club United Cricket Club teams were recently able to honour the late Greg Sidebottom, when both came out on top during special match games played against the GVFL Umpires Association that were played in memory of the local sporting identity. Greg, who sadly passed away after suffering a heart attack while umpiring a football match last year, was heavily involved with both the GVFL Umpires Association and Shepparton & Youth Club United Cricket Club, and to help honour his involvement in both sports each club formed two teams (junior and senior players) and played two T/20 games.

Greg’s sons, Warren and Nick Sidebottom played in the senior match on opposite teams, with Nick playing in the Shepparton & Youth Club United Cricket Club team and Warren playing in the GVFL Umpires Association team. Shepparton & Youth Club United Cricket Club president, Tony Giblin said, “It was a real family orientated, casual and happy go lucky night. It was something that Greg would have enjoyed himself. “We are planning another honour match next year and keep this going on an annual basis.”
