Is homework a waste of time? H By David Lee HOMEWORK is not an accurate judge of a students’ potential and therefore is likely to be a waste of time. According to research studies by academics and observation undertaken by former local and founder of National I nstit ute of I nteg rative Medicine, Professor Avni Sali, says that the performance of students should be based on their individual talents rather than how much they can remember from “the phonebook.” Professor Sali said, “I have been interested in this topic for a very long time and come to the conclusion that homework should be banned. “In Finland, school students generally don’t do homework and Finland has been rated the number one country for education. Schools in Finland normally have four hours of formal education throughout the day. “Finland teach students how to think, where to get the information from and what to do with it, rather than storing it for examination purposes. “The idea of selecting our students to do the best courses at tertiary level based on a number or score, is flawed. High scores are generally gained through rote learning which is a technique based on repetition, not necessarily on learning how to think. “T h is is not a usef u l met hod to determine how skilled a student is, and is a terrible way to select talented students. As schools have students for 13 years, the school should be assessing the student’s ability during these years at a more personal level, rather than relying on a final examination result. “However this is not possible for teachers with the large classroom numbers in this country, and our current structure of the education system. “For example in Finland, classes are capped at around 15 students. Teachers in Finland have a high social status, high pay

and are generally better qualified. “When I visited the Witten Medical School in Germany, the dean greeted me with the following, “We don’t select our medical students based on how many times they read the ‘phonebook’ like you do. We select on intellect and passion.” “T hese st udents a re not assessed primarily on an examination result, but on their overall thinking ability and passion for medicine. These type of graduates are more likely to see many possibilities, being more lateral and less reductionist. “This medical school produces some of the best and most highly regarded medical graduates. “It is generally assumed that homework promotes higher achievement and better marks, but research shows that there is little academic benefit to this approach.

‘Homework’ should ideally involve playing, exploring, music, helping others eg. elderly, and in particular talking to your parents. Especially in years 10, 11 and 12 students are primarily isolated in their homework room and hence making it difficult for parents to develop a more adult relationship with them. “Schools also need to make education more enjoyable. It’s just like work. If you enjoy your job you perform better. “There won’t be an overnight change, but we need to start the shift.” Do you have a story you would like to share with us or want to pass along a tip-off on something happening around the Goulbur n an d M ur ray Valle ys? Set to open soon open in Melbourne on April 16, the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre put a call out for children to send in a video declaring their love for Lego and William has been selected out of applicants from across the state to join the finalists, who will each be vying for one of the 12 spots on the illustrious Creative Crew. William said, “For the video I made an island with the ocean surrounding it that had boats and cars on it. It took me a few days to make. “I was excited to be chosen as a finalist. I like Lego a lot. I make a lot of different things. My pirate ship took me a whole day to build. “Every special occasion I get Lego. I’m running out of room in my bedroom to put it. “I have been building with Lego since I was three. “If I get selected, I am looking forward to testing the rides.”

The Nationals give locals more say IN A first for Victoria, local voters will be given the chance to have more say during the pre-selection process, after The Nationals announced they aim to hold a pilot community preselection process to determine the party’s candidate for Shepparton for the 2018 state election. Overwhelmingly endorsed by State Council the constitutional change will now go to State Conference for consideration in May. Enrolled voters who live in Shepparton electorate, including Mooroopna , Tat u ra , Nu mu rka h , Nat ha l ia, Toola mba , Tallygaroopna, Picola, Katunga, Barmah and Strathmerton will be able to participate and vote at the preselection process. In a usual preselection for The Nationals, only financial members of the party vote to choose a candidate.

Leader of The Nationals, Peter Walsh said the pilot concept was an exciting development both for Shepparton and for The Nationals in Victoria. “We are very keen to ensure our next candidate for Shepparton has strong grassroots connections and that they are in touch with the issues that matter most to the people of this electorate,” Mr Walsh said. “Community preselections have been run successfully in other states but this will be a new and exciting development in Victoria and we believe the people of Shepparton will appreciate having the opportunity to get involved and have a say in our candidate selection process.”

Shepparton district facing an energy crisis

ENERGY IMPACT… From left, Pental engineering manager, Paul Moore, Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources, David Southwick and Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell. Photo: Supplied.

CONCERNS have been raised that the Shepparton district could be facing an energy crisis following the shutting down of the Hazelwood Power Station in the La Trobe Valley last week. Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell is particularly concerned about the impact it (the shutdown) will have on regional homes and businesses, such as those in the Shepparton district. “Daniel Andrews has set Victoria on a dark path to an energy crisis,” Ms Lovell said. “Victoria needs a Premier to fight for the best interests of Victorians, not allow crime to soar, youth justice centres to be overrun, CFA volunteers to be shafted and

power prices to surge because of reckless ideology.” Shadow M inister for Energ y and R e s ou rc e s , D av id S out hw i c k s a id the overwhelming feedback from the community is one of fear for the future. “Because of Daniel Andrews’ reckless energy policy decisions, Victoria now faces 72 days of power shortfall in the next two years according to the Australian Energy Market Operator,” Mr Southwick said. “The Labor Government’s ideological power policies have left Victoria stranded in an energy crisis, where households and businesses will be exposed to regular South Australian-style blackouts and soaring power prices.”

Greater Shepparton City Council encourages residents to drink up in H30 Challenge GREATER Shepparton City Council has teamed up with health promotion foundation VicHealth and Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative to encourage local residents to sign up for the H30 Challenge and improve their health. VicHealth’s H30 Challenge encourages Victorians to make a simple 30-day pledge to replace every sugary drink they would normally drink, with water. Greater Shepparton City Council is one of 18 Councils VicHealth is working with this year to promote the challenge. VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter said, “The H30 Challenge costs nothing and could make a big impact on your life. A regular 600mL bottle of soft drink contains about 16 teaspoons of sugar and there are around 11 teaspoons of sugar in a sports drink. You wouldn’t put this much of sugar in your morning coffee yet many people are unknowingly consuming such high amounts on a daily basis. With nearly two-thirds of Victorians currently overweight or obese, reducing intake of excess kilojoules through sugary drinks is one way to promote a healthier diet and improve health, prevent tooth decay and save money.” Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dinny Adem and Cr Fern Summer are encouraging all community members and workplaces to join them and fellow councillors to sign-up for the H30 Challenge and switch sugary drinks to water. By joining the H30 Challenge you can track our City’s progress to see the amount of kilojoules saved, money saved and teaspoons of sugar consumed during the challenge via the website. To sign up, go to www.h30challengee.com.au/lga/ shepparton and receive email updates, texts messages, tips, tools and helpful advice to keep you motivated. Page 16 – The Adviser. H BRINGING ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO SHEPPARTON… Core Strength Health and Wellness business owner, Tracey Visser. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

Core strength, health and wellness By Nicholise Garner I N MY work, I hear some amazing stories from time to time and this story is all of that as well as being incredibly inspiring. Diagnosed with cancer last year, Core Strength Health and Wellness business owner, Tracey Visser underwent surgery and radiotherapy just as her partner at only 46, had two heart attacks, a quadruple bypass and soon after, a mini stroke. Both having experienced life changing events, they soon came to realise that there was very little available locally to support their physical recovery. Both had surgical wounds to the chest and needed to find a way to exercise gently. After much research, Tracey ended up finding Shapemaster Powertone Plus Pilates, power assisted exercise machines available in Melbourne. Tracey said, “I feel so passionate about the need for gentle physical stimulation in the healing process to strengthen those who are physically or emotionally fragile. These machines have made the world of difference to me and I knew they could benefit so many here in Shepparton,

Page 18 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1348 Wednesday, April 5, 2017

actively helping anyone who requires gentle exercise. The whole circuit only takes 30 minutes with 5 minutes on each machine and the machines themselves are specifically designed to gently target and strengthen core fitness.” The atmosphere at Core Strength Health and Wellness is quite beautiful. It’s calm and low lit with amber salt lamps and beautifully chilled music. I’d suggest that this program would suit anyone and that it is somewhat meditative, the perfect place to unwind during a lunch break. Tracey said, “ The program is Pilates based and is ideal for people who prefer a more gentle approach to exercise, particularly to help with rehabilitation and even for depression.” With so much going on in her life personally, I am in awe of Tracey as she launches Core Strength Health and Wellness just a year after her own surgery. Launching this Thursday, April 6, visit Tracey at Shop 9 Centrepoint Complex, 276-278 Maude Street, Shepparton or call her on 5858 5657 to talk about your fitness and wellbeing.

This is something we need to do together and the best way to do that is through education. That’s why we introduced the WOW Women Education Scholarship Fund. The fund helps give the recipients the opportunity to follow their dreams and it has become a stepping stone to allow them to move forward and help the community grow.” “For the first time this year, we also have corporate tables, which are a fantastic way for businesses to thank their loyal customers and help to develop and grow their staff. “Be part of this momentous occasion by attending the WOW day for women.” Naomi Simson started her entrepreneurial journey with RedBalloon in 2001 from her front room with just $25,000 and a secondhand computer - it is now considered one of Australia’s online business success stories. RedBalloon is an online “experience” gift retailer, which has sold more than three million experiences and featured on BRW magazine’s Great Places to Work list five years in a row. From its humble, home-based beginnings a decade ago, RedBalloon is considered a brand success story – with its mantra Give, Share Live, it supports more than 3,000

I’ll also be providing 12 months of mentoring for the recipients. Funds for the scholarships are raised through a special raffle that we run

The RJ I P is a $220M Australian Government initiative designed to create local jobs and growth, assist in diversifying regional economies and build stronger communities in 10 regions across the country. Member for Murray, Damian Drum says the Goulburn Valley’s Local Planning Committee will develop a Local Investment Plan that outlines the region’s sectors for growth and identifies new markets which may create sustainable jobs in the future. “Our committee brings together leaders from across regional Victoria with a broad range of skills. We understand that locals know our community best.

“Once the Local Investment Plan is completed, the committee will invite businesses, councils and community groups across the Goulburn Valley region to apply for funding,” Mr Drum said. Drum hits back at MDBA announcement F E D E R A L M e m b e r f o r M u r r a y, Damian Drum has expressed his extreme frustration at the recent announcement by the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) chief executive, Phillip Glyde. Mr Drum said, “The announcement that the MDBA is opening offices in A lbu r y-Wodonga , Toowoomba a nd Adelaide is only the start of what they should be doing in regionalising the whole of the authority’s administration. “My concern is that there is a risk regional community members would look at this as a token effort. “The National Party has taken the lead in the Coalition Government’s agenda to drive decentralisation. Relocating G overn ment Agencies to r u ral and regional areas is a major part to this policy. “The MDBA is a prime example of a

Government Agency that would benefit being on the ground and a part of the community it affects directly in its decision making.” Mr Drum said the recent decision by Pri me M i n ister M alcol m Tu r nbu ll, announcing the establishment of the Regional Ministerial Taskforce to help drive new improvements to the lives of rural, regional and remote Australians, shows how important regional growth policy is to the Coalition Government. “As I have stated clearly in Parliament, decentralisation is imperative for our national economy,” Mr Drum said. “Relocating whole agencies such as the MDBA to a regional centre, such as Shepparton, must be on the agenda, not just piece-meal efforts.”

1. ENJOYING THE VIEW… Gondolas take you to the very top of the mountain. From Fairy Springs you can enjoy the view or tale a luge ride. 2. A GREAT CITY… Auckland is a great city to visit. A must do is to go up the Sky Tower. The view from the top is spectacular. 3. AN ATTRACTIVE SITE… Rotorua, known for its hot pools and geysers and rotten egg smell of sulphur, attracts tourist from around the world. 4. HOME OF THE HOBBITS… The Hobbits’ front doors can be visited by tourists on the site where the movie was shot.

4

MANY of us would say we never win anything, so when Mary Beatie of Finlay was told she had won a $10,000 prize, $5,000 of which was a holiday, she just could not believe it. She had won the holiday and the cash as first prize in The Adviser 2016 GMCU $30,000 Giveaway. The cash was no problem as she started the spending on a new lounge suite. As for the holiday, where to go? After talking with Lyn McNaught Travel in Mooroopna she decided on New Zealand, a country she had heard so much about and very much wanted to see. So Mary, together with her husband, Ron, and friends Glenda and Greg Brunt flew to Auckland. They had two nights there and had a chance to see the town. They had five star accommodation right next to the Sky City Tower. Mary says the view from the top was spectacular. Back in their hotel they met the other members of their travel group and tour guide. The next day their bus headed off to the Bay of Islands; a very pretty place. They toured the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, which is the site where the treaty with the British was signed. Mary enjoyed her time there and the displays of carved war canoes. Later, they went on a cruise on the bay and saw dolphins. The tour was great and all were impressed with how clean and tidy New Zealand was. Next, it was a visit to Rotorua, famed for its mud pools and geysers and that smell of rotten eggs from the sulphur, but the locals seemed to not notice and even use the steam to heat their homes. They were treated to a Maori concert and found it very entertaining. Everyone

3

joined in. The ladies danced and the men joined in the Haka. Their next stop was Hobbit country; the location of the Lord of the Rings franchise movies. The facades of those little, rounddoored houses are all there. Everyone enjoyed the Hobbit tour and Mary says it was excellent. They then took a Gondola up into the mountains from Fairy Springs and the views from to top were just great. They were offered a luge ride, where you sit or lay in the vehicle pull a handle and off you go on a hair raising ride down the mountain. Mary says it was fast but lots of fun. At Papapa they were taken on a tour of the town in an aqua duck. After driving the town they then entered the waters of the bay and saw the many beautiful homes that line the shore. Finally they arrived in Wellington. Mary’s group had a two night stay, so allowed for time to explore. They were told that the local war museum was a must see, and they weren’t disappointed. The display on Gallipoli was amazing. It featured full size wax figures telling the history of Gallipoli. The display filled six rooms and Mary came away very impressed. It was then time to head home to Australia, but Mary enjoyed the tour so much she would like to return and do the south island. She would like to thank Lyn McNaught Travel, the GMCU and The Adviser newspaper for making the holiday possible. Oh and Mary has already got her entries in for this years’ 2017 GMCU $30,000 Giveaway … you never know. Until next time, Safe Travel’n, Geoff Vallance The Adviser. It was originally in the hands of 92 year old local resident, Kevin Woodhouse, who was gifted the car as a retirement gift from his former employer, Ormond’s Garage. Chris and Heather said, “They gave Kevin the car instead of a gold watch, which was customary when somebody retired. “When we got it 18 months ago, it was pretty knocked about, but we have restored

it to its original glory. “The interior is original trim and in immaculate condition. It has its original headlight protectors and even had air conditioning fitted when it was given to Kevin, which you normally don’t see in a Gemini. “After removing the dints and doing some panel work, mechanical work and having it resprayed to the original red colour, we took it around to Kevin’s to show him and he had a huge smile on his face. He said ‘my god it’s exactly like when I got it in 1981.’ “These cars are as rare as hen’s teeth. You can’t really find them anymore.”

Local’s dancing success story

A GROWING CAREER… Local resident, Estelle O’Keeffe has been growing her dancing career, having spent 16 months at American Musical and Dramatic Academy, graduating with honours, being selected into the Debbie Reynolds Scholarship Program and taking up a role as instructor for Amanda Baird musical theatre. Photo: David Lee.

By David Lee THE past two years have been interesting, busy and a great time of growth for local resident, Estelle O’Keeffe, who was only the second dancer from Daphne Learoyd School of Dance in Shepparton to have been accepted to fine tune their skills at the prestigious American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA). But it has been what happened since graduating from AMDA in Los Angeles (LA) in October last year, that has really started to make Estelle’s story a dancing success. Estelle said, “I spent 16 months with AMDA and graduated with honours and have been very busy since then. I have been accepted into the Debbie Reynolds Scholarship Program at a dance studio in LA. It’s a very prestigious studio. I get to train with some very high profile people. There are only eight selected into this program. Some of my teachers have worked with Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and the Backstreet Boys. “It’s a very commercial based studio and I love it. I will finish with the program in June, but it has been great in networking and figuring out who you are as a dancer.

“I was also selected to be a feature dancer in a Samsung ad that was advertising wireless headphones. It was my first time on a set. It was so surreal. “As well as that, I have been an instructor for Amanda Baird musical theatre. I get to travel to prestigious elementary schools and dance. We put on huge performances including Peter Pan, The Lion King, Annie and High School Musical to name a few. “I actually teach some pretty famous students. At the moment I am teaching Nichole Ritchie’s daughter, Kate. “It’s really challenging, but I love it.” Do you have a story you would like to share with us or want to pass along a tip-off on something happening around the Goulburn and Murray Valleys?
