Classic car auction to attract national interest By Nicholise Garner PROMINENT Gold Coast business Lloyds Auctions are often featured in the media for both their auction and community initiatives. With a worldwide audience, Lloyds approached the Shepparton Motor Museum to host their planned Victorian auction event. I spoke to Shepparton Motor Museum curator, Graeme Balfour to discuss this turn of events. Graeme has been a part of the Shepparton

Motor Museum since its inception some five years ago and has seen the museum grow and develop in leaps and bounds over its short life span. Graeme said, “This is a real coup, not only for the motor museum, but for Greater Shepparton.” Graeme said he and museum patron, Jim Andreadis, were particularly excited that Lloyds chose Shepparton over their original plan to host a Victorian auction in Continued on page 26 Melbourne.

Fire danger period over but regulations still to be followed

PLAN YOUR BURNS RIGHT… While planned burns in the Shepparton area have come to an end, the CFA is reminding residents that they need to follow regulations when planning their own burn-offs. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

By David Lee WHILE planned burns for the Greater Shepparton area have come to an end, the CFA is reminding residents that while the Fire Danger Period is coming to an end, there are still regulations to follow if residents are planning their own burn-offs.

CFA District 22 operations officer, Peter Bell said, “We also remind residents that the end of the Fire Danger Period will be coming to an end and the restrictions will be lifted from 1am on April 18 across District 22. However, people must still register their burns when they are going to do them with

VicFire on 1800 668 511. “There are also still conditions that need to be met while burns are taking place including ensuring you have an adequate suppressions system, enough water around, that a person is in attendance while the fire is alight and a clear area around where the burn is planned.”

HELPING TO SAVE LIVES… From left, GV Gem & Mineral Craft Group coordinator, George Fadersen handing a $1,000 cheque to Australian Royal Flying Doctors Service patient transport officer, Pauline Keegan and critical care nurse, Grant Walters. Photo: David Lee.

By David Lee GEMS are considered a precious stone, but nothing is more precious than donating funds to those in need, especially when the receiver is a group who helps to save lives. After a recent successful Gem and Mineral Show saw $1,000 raised through an auction organised by the GV Gem & Mineral Craft Group, the group made the decision to donate the funds to the Australian Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS). Club coordinator, George Fadersen said, “It was our 40th show and it was fantastic. We had traders and tailgaters from across

Victoria, NSW and South Australia. “On the Saturday during the show, we went around and collected donations of articles from the traders and on the Saturday evening after the awards, we held an auction of the donated articles and it helped to raise $1,000, which we have donated to the RFDS “Thanks needs to go to the traders for their donations and to Norm Gardener and his colleagues for facilitating the auction. “The RFDS has a big job to do and an important job to do, which is why we are happy to do what we can to help them.”

APPEAL TO HELP THOSE IN NEED… From left, Mooroopna CFA firefighters, Barry Lancaster, Larissa Ballard, Nathan Ballard, Rachel Everett and Barb Warburton will be out and about this Good Friday and are urging the community to dig deep for those in need. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

Dig deep for Good Friday By David Lee HAVING raised $46,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital last year, Mooroopna CFA is gearing up for another fantastic Good Friday Appeal, and the brigade’s volunteers are calling on the community to dig deep to help those in need. With E aster almost upon us, the Mooroopna Fire Brigade will once again be taking to the streets on Friday, April 14 to collect donations for their Good Friday Appeal. As well as door knocking and making

collections at traffic lights on the corner of Morrell and McLennan Streets in Mooroopna, the Mooroopna Fire Brigade will also be holding their popular annual auction at the Mooroopna Fire Station on Echuca Road, where quality unwanted goods will be available to purchase. Mooroopna CFA Fire Fighter, Leigh Hitchcock said, “It is so important for the community to get behind this appeal. The funds raised really go to helping some of the most vulnerable and unwell. We’re hoping to raise more this year than we did last year.

“With the auction, people are welcome to donate any unwanted, good quality goods, which will be auctioned off at 7pm on Good Friday at the station. We’re looking for household goods and tools; anything you can give. “Even if you don’t have anything to donate, come down and have a look at what will be on offer or put your hand up to volunteer with the doorknock appeal.” For further information, to express an interest in volunteering or to donate to the auction, contact Leigh on 0427 393 710.

TWENTY-TWO years of rallying fun has helped contribute towards GV Hospice Care Services, with the GV Hospice Car Rallye seeing $71,000 raised last year. Running over two big days, May 6 and 7, entrants and cars will gather at the Shepparton Motor Museum with the first team departing at 8am. GV Hospice Car Rallye chairman, Min Innes-Irons said, “The amount raised last year was sensational, but if we don’t achieve amounts like that, we still focus on having a really enjoyable weekend, which helps with people coming back year after year, and GV Hospice Care Services still benefits. “We have got people that have supported nearly every rally. “The committee works hard to ensure that while the weekend is a car rally, we have fun and variety. “There are many generous people that contribute each year to make this rally so successful. “This year the rally will be going west to the RACV Club at Creswick for Saturday night. The route will consist of excellent driving roads, navigational questions and a few surprise questions to test the entrant’s creative flair. The Sunday lunch and presentations are to be held within Cooey of Shepparton. “We love seeing a variety of cars, styles, ages and history etc, but regardless of what type of car you bring, it is about having fun and socialising with other people. “GV Hospice Care Services is one of the few organisations that offer 24 hour care. For many years they have been looking after terminally ill people to ensure that the final stages of

And we think that is an appropriate reason to have an annual fundraising event. “22 years down the track, the GV Hospice Car Rallye is in great shape. “It’s not too late to enter your team, so if you are looking for a great time that is all for a good cause, I encourage people to touch base,” Min said. A COMFORTABLE PLACE TO BE… Stephen Barnard, 7 and his brother Benjamin, 4 from Lancaster enjoying the school holiday fun at Riverside Plaza. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

The perfect balance between country and city By Nicholise Garner I LIVED away from Shepparton for most of my adult life, in Melbourne and London but I used to visit my friends in Shepparton and I remember seeing Riverside Plaza for the first time and feeling a pang of jealousy. It reminded me of a shopping Centre in Queensland that I’d visited during a holiday. The sails over the carpark, the trees, the modern design. It sounds funny but quite honestly, to me, the arrival of Riverside Plaza with its brand new Coles and a perfect balance between city and country, was a sign of progress and development in Shepparton. Now I live here and Riverside Plaza is my local and it’s a nice feeling to be writing about the progress there. With Forty Winks recently opening along with W&R Nails, we’re seeing new businesses appear and Coles Express is

on its way. Riverside offer free activities for children each and ever y school holidays and I just feel so happy to see local community spirit and to be a part of this community with everything at my fingertips, but not so busy that I can’t find a park or that it feels too big a job to stop at the shops. So, I’ll be taking my kids this Easter to enjoy the free activities, I’ll enjoy a coffee while they play and I’ll do my regular shop, no pressure. Riverside Plaza Mall will be closed Good Friday, but Fun City will be open from 11am to 5pm over the Easter long weekend. Spend a minimum of $10 and fill out an entry form for your chance to win a share of $25,000 and a $5,000 holiday voucher. An example of this can be seen in the Liberty Kitchens cabinets at the Dennis Family Homes, Macedon display at Kialla Lakes, where the timber look of the kitchen is replicated in the fireside unit and boxed shelving. Generous sized walk-in pantries are making an impact in house design also. Gone are the days where these areas are just fitted out with storage shelves by the builder. Customers want more from their space. The addition of benchtops with drawers for storage allows the room to be used as a preparation area. Including adjustable shelving above allows the space to be changed to suit future storage requirements. Being a separate room, the beauty is that when guests arrive, the door can be simply shut on any mess. Walk-in wardrobes have also had a revamp. Again here, the white shelving is out and colour is in. Fittings also have had an upgrade to present the best possible storage opportunities maximising space. Call into Liberty Kitchens at 60 Williams Road, Shepparton or give them a call on 5831 2620 to arrange an in-house consultation.

Nine autumn outdoor DIY projects AUTUMN is a great time to get outside and get some DIY projects done. Here are a few things you can do before the winter months hit. For information and details on all of these projects and more, visit www.bunnings.

com.au/diy-advice/outdoor/outdoor-living/ nine-autumn-outdoor-diy-projects

Lay some stepping stones

Creating a path in your garden with stepping stones not only looks great but will help you look after your lawn by keeping everyone off it. Stepping stones are easy to lay yourself and it’s a good idea to do this project before winter arrives and your lawn gets too wet to walk on.

Clean out your gutters

With winter and the rain approaching, it’s important to clean out your gutters. Gutters direct water away from your home and if you don’t clear debris out of them they could clog, which leads to rusting or water pouring over the sides of the gutter and onto your house. It’s also important to clean gutters because built-up leaf matter can pose a big fire risk.

Brighten up your deck

Installing deck lights outside is a great way to create a nice ambience in your outdoor entertaining area. It will also improve your deck’s safety if you have steps. It’s a simple project to do and one that you may not need an electrician for, depending on the type of lights you install.

Build a pergola

A pergola is a great outdoor feature that you can use for entertaining in your backyard or to support climbing plants. You’ll need to consider the size, shape, colour of the materials you’re going to use and find the best location for the pergola in your garden. Whether you’re building a pergola that is attached to your main house or as a freestanding unit, you may need to check your local council regulations before you start building.

Page 22 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1349 Wednesday, April 12, 2017

Add a bamboo screen

Installing bamboo screens in your garden is a great way to create more privacy around your home or keep something out of sight. There are many different sizes, strengths and colours that you can choose from to suit your outdoors. Putting a bamboo screen up is easier than you think and only requires a few tools and materials.

Build a paling fence

Ideal for creating privacy and security around your home, building a paling fence is something you can do yourself. Before you start, check with your local council regarding potential height restrictions.

Put up bistro blinds

By enclosing the side of an outdoor area with bistro blinds you can protect your deck from the weather and extend its use. Bistro blinds can be used for any outdoor entertaining area such as a verandah, balcony or pergola, while also adding a little insulation to your home.

Pave a pathway

Paving a pathway can give your garden some direction and provide support for heavy foot traffic areas. It can also create a border and provide a nice visual contrast. The materials you can use to create a pathway include blocks, bricks, cobblestones and pavers.

Install a retractable or fold-down clothesline

Installing a retractable or fold-down clothesline will help maximise your outdoor space. Retractable clotheslines take up minimal space, while a fold-down clothesline can be mounted on any available wall space that can hold the weight.

Love your pool this winter

NOW is the time to think about how to care for your pool and spa in the cooler months. For a healthy pool or spa it’s important to ensure your equipment is still functioning properly and think about addressing any maintenance issues such as sand filter sand changes, solar repairs and gas heater servicing. Poolwerx co-business owner, Craig Henry said, “It’s important to change the sand in your filter every five years to ensure your filter works efficiently. Clogged up sand can leave the pool water dull requiring extra expense for chemicals. “Solar repairs are difficult to do in summer due to the extreme temperatures of heat and often people turn their solar off. Call now to have those solar repairs done so your pool is ready for the swim season in spring.” For those who don’t have solar heating, Craig suggests considering a gas heater for year long use of your pool. Craig said, “All gas pool heaters legally require a yearly service just like a house gas heater. A gas heater service can be done by one of our qualified technicians at Poolwerx.” For those who don’t have a pool and want to enjoy the water all year around, Poolwerx is the exclusive stockists of Banff Spas, providing installation, service and maintenance. Drop into Poolwerx at 53 Archer Street, Shepparton

Big win for our Shepparton H IT really is evident that great things happen in Shepparton and this is another example of such, bringing Shepparton once again, to a world stage just as the International Volleyball competition leaves. The Shepparton Motor Museum is clearly holding its own, having already developed a reputation and strong ties with car enthusiasts nationally. This auction is going to put the Shepparton Motor Museum and in turn, Greater Shepparton on the fast track, drawing interest far and wide from some heavy hitters when Lloyds come to town April 29 with the auction starting at 12pm sharp. Originally Lloyds were to supply the vehicles for auction but Graeme proudly told me that through their extensive data base and connections made over the past five years, the motor museum has secured most of the 50 or so vehicles to be auctioned. Graeme said, “We had an overwhelming response to our call out for classic vehicles to be auctioned and given the huge number of enquiries, the potential for further auction events is highly likely. Lloyds are already

proposing an annual Shepparton Classic Car auction, which is thrilling.” Graeme is humble in his achievements at the Shepparton Motor Museum and told me, “Personally, I just feel so proud that all of the vehicle owners put their faith and trust in us to

look after their prize possession. Recently I was incredibly surprised to receive an award from the Victorian Historic Racing Register in appreciation of my support. I was absolutely shocked, it was a truly humbling experience.” Jim Andreadis, who along with Lloyd Mawson, helped establish the motor museum, is thrilled to see an international spotlight on Shepparton. Jim said, “I think it could be transformative for the museum and for Shepparton as the auction will be promoted not only in the region but also nationally and internationally. This is a game changer if we embrace it. It’s excellent exposure with online streaming to 60,000 to 80,000 viewers and participants, who will all be made aware of the museum, Emerald Bank and Greater Shepparton.” T he Sheppar ton Motor Museu m at Emerald Bank is definitely worth a visit and is a wonderful drawcard for Shepparton. Reach your destination safely this Easter By Wednesday Elgar VICTORIA State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers and the Lions Club will conduct Driver Reviver sites on the Hume Freeway and Goulburn Valley Highway over the Easter weekend, to help motorists reach their destinations safely. ENCOURAGING PATIENTS TO BE INFORMED… From left, Goulburn Valley Hearing Clinic audiology support, Maxene Moore, audiologist, Belinda Schmedje and practice manager, Dierdre Robertson. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

Ask the right questions first DECI DI NG who to see for hearing services can be a little confusing. How do you decide which service is the right one for you? The recent Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) report ‘Issues around the sale of hearing aids,’ highlighted a range of business practices in the hearing services industry particularly a rou nd i nc e nt ive ba s e d s a le s a nd commissions. It’s important to be aware of these practices. They must be disclosed to you as they may influence the price, type and brand of hearing aid being recommended to you. So to make sure you are able to make an informed decision about who to use, here are some questions you can ask your hearing services provider: Do I really need a hearing aid? What are the alternatives? Do you receive commissions or have

sales targets? I am on a pension and am entitled to fully sudsidised hearing aids. Why will the partially subsidised hearing devices suit my needs better than a fully subsidised? What happens if the hearing device doesn’t assist as much as I expected? G ou lbu r n Valley Hea ring Clin ic , practice manager Dierdre Robertson agrees, “It is important to have all the information when making decisions about hearing aids. Your clinician should be happy to answer any of these questions.” Take your time to make any decisions, it is OK to say no. You should never feel pressured or rushed into making a decision, especially a financial decision. It was a great opportunity for people to hear information about the different ideas. “It was good to have representatives from the Ettamogah Rail Hub, Port of Melbourne and the National Trunk Rail. I found it particularly interesting the views of the managers of Ettamogah Rail Hub, who, despite their facility being on the Albury/ Wagga line, have come to the conclusion that the best alignment for inland rail track from Melbourne to Brisbane is the Shepparton/Narrandera alignment. “It ’s a n ongoi ng bat t le to h ave Shepparton included as part of the inland rail alignment. preview Your 2017 season

BENALLA

ROCHESTER

ECHUCA

SEYMOUR

Having played in two of the last three grand finals, the Saints will look to add to the trophy cabinet. Jarrod Bannister is a star from the VAFA and will provide the goal kicking power needed.

The Murray Bombers improved last year and are looking for a top six birth in September. Ruory Kirkby from Glenelg will be a star along with last year’s Morrison Medallist, Simon Buckley.

EUROA

May be the surprise packet in 2017 with some former players returning and former Melbourne defender, Rohan Bail joining the Magpies. Will be hard to beat at Memorial Oval as usual.

KYABRAM

Premiers and Champions in 2016 and have gun locals in Adam Lovison, Patrick Wearden and Brad Mangan added to their list. The Bombers are going to be hard to knock off their perch.

MANSFIELD

The Eagles are always dangerous and with Brett Mahoney returning along with many other recruits, they could surprise. We all know how hard they are to beat at home, especially in the middle of winter.

MOOROOPNA

The Cats have not won a game since 2015 but that will change this year. Watch out for Romain Grenville who will be exciting along with some Tasmanian and local minor league recruits. Will improve but won’t play in Spring.

••• ROUND 4 SELECTIONS ••• West Coast Eagles .......vs ....................Sydney Swans North Melbourne ..........vs .............. Western Bulldogs

Last year’s runner up and coach, James Flaherty wants to go one better. Similar list to last year with the exciting Nathan Whipp returning. 1999, 2008 and now 2017 for flags? Time will tell.

The Lions play Rochester in round one so will quickly find out where they are at. Saad Saad is back and with Jason Cole and company getting him quality ball time, they will feature in the finals.

SHEPPARTON

Were the glamour team of 2016 and have the best draw of any club for 2017. Only play one of the top five sides of last year twice, so will finish high at the end of the home and away season. The Bears are ready and primed.

SHEPPARTON SWANS

Have a tough draw and have lost some quality players. Round 1 against Kyabram is a tough start and after winning a flag three years ago are going to have to reset before challenging again.

SHEPPARTON UNITED

Finished 11th last season and are rebuilding after playing in a grand final four years ago. Luke Lowden and Matt Spangher will lead the young Demons into the future. Another tough year expected.

TATURA

Were middle of the road last year and have added lots of quality including Jamason Daniels, Chris Ryan and Andrew Ciaverella. The Bulldogs do not go long periods without having success. If things fall into place, this could be another Bulldog year.
