A proud win for locals “SH EP, SH EPP Shepparton” quickly became a catchy lyric after the video made by Matt, Claire and Brendan Macgill of Lemnos for the #ShepPROUD Youth Video Competition went viral, and it’s no wonder that it took out first place in this year’s competition. The catchy and sometimes humorous hip hop song about Shepparton runs for three entertaining minutes, which in the words of eldest sibling, Matt Macgill, “is a tale telling our favourite pastimes and quirks of Shep, Shepp, Shepparton.” The music video has already been the centre of huge social media activity, declared viral last week when more than 138,000 views and 14,000 comments were clocked up in just 36 hours. The video has been shared and viewed in Peru, England and New Zealand. Matt, 23, and his teenage siblings have grown up on a farm on the outskirts of Shepparton and sing about real cows, fake cows, Mr D’s and agriculture, namely apples and pears, and highlight many iconic venues and businesses synonymous with their upbringing. 22 year old Jess O’Donoghue’s entry

The winners receive $4,000 cash and the runner-up receives a shopping spree at participating Shepparton businesses valued at $1,000. The Community Fund Goulburn Valley CEO, Cheryl Hammer said, “The judging
panel was delighted with the quality of this year’s entries. The stories and the way the entrants conveyed their #ShepPROUD messages was very high. “We are thrilled with the outcome of the second annual competition as we have some fabulous material to roll out now to promote the #ShepPROUD message. It is uplifting to know many young people love where they live, work and study and are happy to express that,” Cheryl said.
A fruitful investment to boost biosecurity A FRUITFUL investment of $2.2M is set to boost biosecurity in Australia, which will have a positive impact on the region’s booming $500M horticulture region. The funding, which is being ramped up by the Coalition Government, will see a trial of automated fruit fly traps and a strengthening of the fruit fly surveillance programme, as well as a grants program for work to prove areas are free of pests. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Barnaby Joyce said, “Many of our trading partners require evidence of our strong biosecurity and freedom from pests and diseases to allow our produce into their country. “To boost exports to these countries, the Coalition Government is providing funding to Plant Health Australia to support state governments and export industries to develop further evidence of pest free areas, to support new market access requests and maintenance of existing markets,” Minister Joyce said. Member for Murray, Damian Drum said, “Shepparton is a major horticulture production region for pears, apples and summer fruit including nectarines, plums and apricots, and many of these have strict are freedom certification requirements for export. “This work is helping to ensure we are aware of biosecurity risks as early as possible, to help identify and manage pests or diseases, along with support market access so our local producers can send their produce to overseas markets and get a higher return at the

Goulburn Valley fruit grower and packer, Peter Thompson gave his full support to the announcement. “Market access is critical to key export destinations like Taiwan, China and the United States. H A behind-the-scenes look at the S Shepparton’s Law Court Precinct build By David Lee W I T H t he S heppa r ton L aw C ou r t Precinct beginning to change the shape of Shepparton’s skyline, we thought it might be interesting to take a behind-the-scenes look at how such a project comes about. When speaking with Court Service Victoria and the architects of the new law courts precinct, they explained the need to create a mock-up courtroom out of polystyrene to nut out some of the possible issues, as this is the first multi-jurisdictional court to be built in Victoria. Court Services Victoria chief operating officer, Brian Stevenson said, “There is no template, no perfect courtroom design, so an exercise like this is vital to ensure that the courtroom does what it needs to do, and supports the needs of jurisdictions and the community. “In this mock-up we looked at a broad range of issues from line of sight, layout, OH&S, heights and spaces. “Having a (polystyrene) mock-up enabled the judiciary to experience the courtroom and provide feedback before the courtroom was built, so we could make any required changes at the design stage, instead of costly changes once the court was built.” A rch itec t us di rec tor, M a rk Wilde said, “Being the first multi-jurisdictional

Teenager inspires dad to become CFA volunteer IN more ways than one the CFA is important to father and son team, Daryl and Tim Wilson of Tatura. Daryl was previously a firefighter for State Government departments and tackled many fires in forests and on public land, but after fighting in the Black Saturday fires, the impact saw Daryl hang up his firefighting helmet. Daryl said, “I really enjoyed the sense of camaraderie and purpose on the fire truck, especially when we had a big fire to control.” After a break of five years Daryl was inspired by his son, 17 year old Tim, to rekindle his love for firefighting and to reskill to support the Tatura community.
A few years ago, Tim began his training for the CFA junior running competitions with the Tatura Volunteer Fire Brigade team and asked his dad to help out. “I was reluctant at first, but really wanted to support him, so after a few false starts, I went down,” Daryl said. “It turned out to be fantastic, the people were great and I started to feel that special fire service camaraderie again so I became the team manager,” Daryl said. Competition has given Tim a taste of community volunteerism and when he’s older he wants to further develop his skills to become an operational CFA volunteer. With this in mind, Daryl has taken the
next step and recently joined as a Tatura volunteer firefighter. “It was a big step, but I really want to get back on the fire truck again, especially with Tim,” Daryl said. “He has encouraged me to do this and I’m retraining at the moment to make sure I have the professional skills that volunteers need. “I want to share with Tim that special feeling of being part of a volunteer family, one that helps the community when and where they need it the most.”

Letters to the Editor ON COUNCIL’S DRAFT BUDGET
Dear Editor, I was reviewing the Greater Shepparton City Council draft budget for 2017/18 last night and was very surprised to find the Fair Go Rates System which was implemented to cap council rate increases by a maximum of 2 percent per annum had not been extended to the Municipal Charge 2.3 percent increase or Waste Service Charge which has increased a massive 5.3 percent, so overall our rates will actually increase by 3.4 percent. Considering the Consumer Price Index
(Inflation) for March 2017 quarter is 2.1 this increase appears excessive. But wait it gets worse, if you look back at page 49 of the Greater Shepparton City Council Adopted Budget 2016/17 and replace the total rates and charges figure of $70,956,622 with what should be a more accurate figure being the total rates and charges figure for 2016/17 obtained from page 47 of the Greater Shepparton City Council Draft budget 2017/18 of $71,834,779 it appears our rate increase for 2016/17 was not the stated 2.9 percent but a

The concern is if you extend this logic to the 2017/18, Council Rates will increase a massive 4.5 percent not the stated 3.4 percent. Excluding this possible further increase in profit, the current draft budget surplus for 2017/18 is a healthy $12.142M so this raises many questions. The two questions I have heard recently is why are people still being charged for parking in the CBD (Parking Enforcement Profit is $892,000 but it is unclear how
much of this relates to parking meters) and why has the development of the Shepparton Sports Stadium been postponed as this is major drawcard to the Greater Shepparton Region. Yours sincerely, Dallas Moore Shepparton Want to have your say? Email your letters to the Editor to editorial@sheppartonadviser.com.au. Max 100 words
Years of practice makes perfect MANY might be surprised to know that it was way back in 1926, when the first doctor started the practice now known as Mooroopna Medical Centre. Dr Annie Bennett was one of Victoria’s first female doctors and practiced general practice and surgery at Mooroopna and District Hospital until her death in 1940. Her practice was then sold to Dr Duncan Mackellar, from Canberra, who took up the practice in the early days of World War II. He continued Dr Bennett’s practice, also providing radiology and pathology services to the hospital, additional to his extensive surgical practice. He was joined by his son John in 1968, but died in 1972. Dr David Ball joined the practice in 1980 and was followed by Dr Alan Watson in 1986, who departed in 2000. Dr Mackellar and Dr Ball share a long partnership and have worked hard to develop their practices. They have been joined by a line of excellent doctors who have maintained the high standards in Mooroopna, now expanded to the Kialla Medical Clinic.
John Mackellar’s involvement with the Council immunisation program led to his interest in travel medicine and the two practices now provide the only travel clinic with trained travel doctors in the Goulburn Valley. He has also had a long interest in the needs of people affected by alcohol and other drugs and advocates for the full training of doctors in the problems faced by new mothers and their children, many of whom will become drug affected. He has led a campaign for the establishment of a mothers and babies’ unit at Goulburn Valley Health. David Ball has strengthened the continuing education of doctors new to general practice, by mentoring and supporting them through the Registrar training program. He has a longstanding relationship with the University of Melbourne and provides mentoring and guidance to students entering their final years of their medical degree. Dr Ball’s interest in Higher Education, combined with his commitment, passion and the ability to inspire others has meant several students have been retained in our rural area and now practice medicine in

A connection to land and heritage SI T T I NG comfortably bet ween Mooroopna and Shepparton is a site that has held a special connection to the local Aboriginal community. Known on one side of the highway as The Flats, and the ‘KidsTown’ side known as Daishs Paddock, Indigenous families have sought refuge and comfort in these areas and that connection has been recognised in the form of The Connection cafe, restaurant and function centre. T he C on ne c t ion busi ne ss ow ner, Felicia Dean said, “I have always had a strong interest in cooking and catering and owned Yurri Catering which was a successful catering business, when the opportunity came up at The Connection, I was very happy to take on the challenge and merge the two businesses together. “The Connection’s menu is varied and pays homage and recognition to the heritage of the area and the connection between the food, the land and Indigenous people. At The Connection, we use bush herbs and spices and regularly have kangaroo, emu and yabbies on the menu, which are incorporated into a modern menu. The Flats and Daishs Paddock salads, and the Hill 60 burger are menu items acknowledging the nearby historical sites. At The Connection, we also sell a variety of Indigenous food products

By Nicholise Garner ALL too often, to my way of thinking, the youth of today get a bad wrap. I met with two young men recently, Shepparton ACE College Diploma of Community Services students, Imran Avan and Shawn Fiu, who both have a very strong interest in how they can support and assist others as members of our community. Both students were warm and engaging and I could see either one of them would be able to make a real difference as support workers in the community, particularly with youth. For young people to be acting as positive role models and being able to engage with upcoming teens with a real understanding of the difficulties youth of today are faced with, that’s powerful stuff. Imran said, “I was originally interested in working in aged care but I have come to really enjoy working as a support worker, supporting adults with English as a second language. The best thing about this course
is that it offers so many pathways and opportunities.” Shawn said, “I heard about this course through a friend and it’s so well suited to me. I enjoy helping people who have less than others and I see a great need for people who have drug issues. I love the thought of enlightening and encouraging people who might otherwise give up. I particularly want to work with teenagers because I believe the teen years are the hardest transition period and it’s something I can relate to and feel I could help others with.” Shepparton ACE College takes enrolment for The Diploma of Community Services each semester and on successful completion of the course, students may also apply for credit transfers to a range of universities. Galapagos Island By Lyn McNaught THERE was standing room only at the wharf. All the seats were taken by the local Sea Lions, who looked at us as if we were the intruders. A land made famous by the writings of Charles Darwin – you feel like you are in another world. On the Island of Santa Cruz you will spot your first Giant Tortoise. On Isabela there are as many as 300,000 marine iguanas calling the archipelago home, making them impossible to miss! Here you can get up close and personal with a colony
of Santiago fur seals and there are bottlenosed dolphins that race alongside the boats. If you are game, you can swim with the local hammerhead sharks and maybe you will spot the Blue Footed Booby’s strutting and prancing as they perform their courtship dance. On San Cristobal Island you can see the magnificent Frigatebird and Great Frigatebird breeding areas. I swear someone goes out each night and places the most amazing array of creatures and birds on all the paths just for the tourists like me.

Polite, welcoming and helpful people. There is such a place and it’s called Taiwan, where all of the above is common and expected, along with wonderful food,

Why do you think Big W does so well. - ANNE LINES Yes absolutely free parking should be trialled at the very least! - JO MATTHEWS

No to cars. - VICKI RUSSELL Yes to free parking. - NICOLE ARMSTRONG Yes free parking would be handy. - KEIRA HENDERSON Yes to free timed parking, no to cars in Mall. - LESLEY THOMPSON *Businesses in the CBD, and particularly the Maude Street Mall, are overwhelmingly in favour of opening the mall to slow moving traffic.

Reaping the rewards of their hard work By Nicholise Garner BEHIND the counter at Shepparton’s ABS Auto Service Centre business owners David Morton-John and Barry Cryer are a friendly pair. Personally, I love getting to know people around town and it’s clear to see that these two have been in business together for a very long time! David said, “ABS started in Shepparton in 1988 so next year we’ll be celebrating our 30 year anniversary! We are specialists in our work and also now carry out mechanical repairs including logbook servicing. We have a qualified team of mechanics, Terry MacDonald and Dallas Rundle LOCAL also Debbie Eastwell who has been with us since 1994, S only taking time off to have her three children.” NEW David struck me as a pretty happy and easy-going kind of man, I asked him what he thought was the secret to their success? David said, “Hard work, product knowledge and customer service. When it comes down to it, between myself and Barry, we’d have over 90 years of experience in the motor industry and that counts for a lot.” From humble beginnings in Benalla Road, Shepparton’s LOCAL ABS Auto Service Centre was the first in the group and the team are proud of the work that they do. The national treasures of Shepparton THREE Shepparton ACE College students have been chosen to participate in National Treasures, a project that includes two youth exchanges with young people from Brazil, Sweden and the United Kingdom. As part of the project the students, Adam Eleftheriou, Telaah Donnelly and Kyrone Black, will travel to York in the United Kingdom in March 2018. The students are looking forward to learning new skills from other young people, making friends from different cultures and sharing some Australian experiences. The whole college community is very proud of what Adam, Telaah and Kyrone have achieved with their talent and perseverance. Shepparton ACE College has worked in partnership with Westside Circus for many years to provide students the amazing experience of training in balancing and tumbling, clowning, juggling and mini trampoline. Some students now train at home and have been excited to find how quickly their skills develop. College principal, Bronwyn Rose, said, “Learning circus arts is fun and engaging for our students and it’s been an inspiration to see so many unique talents develop and thrive with the support and expertise of Westside Circus trainers.” Westside Circus is one of four international partners in this project funded by the European Union. Find Shepparton ACE College at 130 Rowe Street, Shepparton or phone them on 5831 4029 to enquire about their courses.

The KDL will play in Mooroopna on Saturday, September 24 and the GVL will play at Deakin Reserve on Sunday, September 25. Rumbalara Football Netball Club president, Paul Briggs said, “This is a great win for Shepparton. HAWTHORN W.C. EAGLES NTH MELBOURNE FREMANTLE
Football Followers have the chance to WIN BIG during the 2017 AFL football season with Viatek/The Adviser Football Tipping Competition. Each week there will be a prize of $50 to be spent at any of the 22 supporting business houses. All you have to do is place a tick against the football team that you think will win each game. Be careful with your selections as only correct entries will go into the draw for the weekly $50 voucher. If no correct entry is received the prize will jackpot each week until a correct entry is submitted. Entries will only be accepted at the office, 219-225 Wyndham Street, Shepparton, no later than 5pm on each Friday during 2017, unless stated otherwise due to matches being played outside the normal weekend. Entries must be on original forms – no faxes or photocopies will be accepted and only one entry per household is permitted. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

AN EPIC CONTEST… The match between Kyabram and Seymour this weekend will be one to watch with intent. Who will come out on top? Photos: Bailey Opie Photography.
Clash of the titans THIS week`s match of the round between Seymour and Kyabram is as mouth watering as you can get, after five rounds in a competition when both sides are undefeated. Seymour has just been going about their business in a workman like fashion with minimum of fuss while the Bombers are lucky to be 5-0 after just getting over Tatura last Sunday. This is a Kyabram side that has not lost a game since 2015 and you get the feeling they are in second gear at the moment and won`t put it into overdrive until later in the year. Having said that, Seymour at Kings Park may be just the tonic for the Bombers to let the Lions and the competition know who are the premiership favourites in 2017. You look on paper and there are stars on every line and both sides bat very deep. Saad Saad has 29 goals in the first five games of the season and loves this type of game at home. He will be up against a miserly Kyabram defence lead by Josh Vick. Lachlan Smith
and Jason Morgan. Supply for Saad will be what Paul Newman will be hoping to limit and he will be relying on his midfield to help his defenders. Ben Clifton, Jason Cole and Brent Colbert will be the prime movers in the middle for the Lions and will be matched up by Sam Sheldon, Patrick Weardon and Liam Ogden from Ky. Kane Pettifer in attack will need to be watched by the Seymour defence but the Bombers do have other avenues to goal in Kyle Mueller, who kicked four match winning goals last week and the excitement machine, Billy Burstin. The last time these two sides met in round 13 last year, Seymour led by a couple of goals at half time with the Bombers just doing enough in the second half to get the chocolates and stay undefeated in 2016. Don’t expect a shootout if you are heading to Kings Park for a look but you won`t be disappointed with the epic contest these two heavy weights will dish up.
