Take a walk through Shepparton’s past By David Lee THERE are many hidden, and not so hidden, gems across Shepparton that many may not even realise the significance of, locations and building that helped to shape Shepparton as we see it today. That is all about to become accessible through a new walking tour that you can download onto your phone and engage with through Lost Shepparton and Shepparton Heritage Centre’s ZeeTours ‘The Shepparton Beginnings Tour.’ Geoff Allemand of the Lost Shepparton Shop said, “There are many locations across Shepparton that hold quite a bit of significance to how Shepparton was shaped, some of it is no longer standing, and some of it is tucked away so this walking tour was launched to help locals and tourists experience our history firsthand by locating places with their mobile/digital device that explains where and how Shepparton began using fun facts, old photos, quizzes and photo challenges. “We are the first outside of America to create a virtual walking tour using this app so we are pretty excited about it. It has great potential. “The first tour we have created takes you from the corner of High and Welsford Streets

35 new nurse grads start at GV Health THIRTY-FIVE nurse graduates from across Australia started their first day on the job at Shepparton’s GV Health on Tuesday.

While the bulk of the graduates are locals from the Shepparton district area, there are a number from Melbourne, Mildura, Bendigo, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory. GV Health Clinical Nurse graduate coordinator, Sophie Summers said the nurse graduate program provides a supportive environment helping the learner make the transition from student to professional.

“GV Health’s graduate nurse/midwifery program offers a range of experiences and opportunities allowing graduate nurses to consolidate their skills and knowledge while being encouraged into self-directed learning,” Ms Summers said. “This year’s intake of graduates are an exceptionally diverse in terms of their backgrounds, cultures and genders. “We have someone from Townsville who was

born in South Africa, moved to Queensland and recently located to Melbourne and who has now chosen to come to GV Health in Shepparton. “We also have a former firefighter who decided to change career paths and other nurses who are choosing to upskill here at GV Health. “We really do run a very comprehensive and successful program here at GV Health, which really ensures the graduates are ready to hit the ground running,” Ms Summers said.

LETTERS

OPINION

Letters to the Editor

PARKING METERS ARE A DETERRENT Dear Editor, There has been a suggestion that Greater Shepparton City Council should subsidise free parking in the CBD. The fact is if the surplus of parking tax, that would run into millions of dollars over the years, was spent on more off street parking problems as it was meant to be we may not have the parking problems or the decline in retail that we have today. The CBD shopper is in fact subsidising council’s overspend in a government rate capped environment. Albury has just opened a 711 multi-deck, free car park in their CBD without having a parking tax and in a rate capped environment. Imagine if the millions diverted over the years from parking tax in Shepparton was spent on a modern, clean and efficiently run multi-deck, free car park near the mall. This would attract shoppers and investment as has done in the Albury CBD, which has thrived after they got rid of parking meters. This proves beyond doubt that parking meters are a deterrent. Yours sincerely, Norm Sims Shepparton

AN INTERESTING READ – SHOULD LOCAL GOVERNMENT BE SCRAPPED? Dear Editor, Recently when going th roug h old newspaper cuttings I came across an interesting article (Herald Sun, Sunday Debate, March 11, 2012) written by John

Roskam (executive director of the Institute of Public Affairs) stating “Councils are the lifeblood of communities”… A larger number of smaller councils would mean better services and lower rates. He goes on to say councillors and staff are out of touch with ratepayers because they are too big. Bigger councils mean higher rates, more waste and more money spent on bureaucratic nit picking. When Jeff Kennett merged 210 councils into 79 councils almost 20 years ago, the idea was that bigger councils would save money and rates would be lower. This has not happened, instead councils have a whole host of things a long way removed from the real concerns of residents. The priority of councils should be roads, rubbish and recreational facilities. Councils have become so big that councillors have lost control of operations and budgets. He goes on to say the most important person at a council is not the mayor – it is the CEO. Bureaucrats whose job it is to prevent the ratepayers’ elected representatives from having an oversight of operations. Councils provide essential services; they are the lifeblood of communities. But these days they are too often out of touch with residents. A larger number of smaller councils would mean better services and lower rates for Victorians - John Roskam, executive director of the Institute of Public Affairs. In the same article Liam Houlihan goes on to say councils should stick to fixing the footpaths, doing the planning and emptying the bins. So why abolish councils instead of making

We welcome letters to the Editor but they are not guaranteed to be included and may be edited for reasons of style or content. Letters will not be eligible for consideration if they contain defamatory material, or information of a personal nature which is not in the public domain. them tighten their belts? Well, bureaucracies once created have a way of getting more bloated and fighting to survive beyond their use-by date. Besides, councils are now blatantly thumbing their noses at the ratepayers who bankroll them and who they are supposedly there to serve. T he state bureaucracy can handle planning, footpaths and wheelie bins and Victorians can handle a little tax relief in the form of the abolition of rates – Liam Houlihan Sunday Herald Sun chief of staff. In view of the controversy surrounding Greater Shepparton City Council and over the top spending (SAM) the comments above sum it up completely! Yours sincerely, Julie Reed Shepparton

LITTLE PROUD VISIT Dear Editor, Last week we saw the federal agriculture and water minister chaperoned around to hand- picked locations and audiences to ‘look’ and ‘listen’ to locals on the issues of water and the dairy industry. Although unlike prior visits by the former minister there was some awareness of the impending visit prior to the minister arriving it was still a closed shop visit. Following the most recent visit I contacted the Member for Murray, Damian Drum to ask if when the minister returns in a few weeks time there could be a public meeting open to all that was well advertised in advance.

The response that I received from Damian Drum was a defensive reply and a denial of dodging open scrutiny. I also contacted the minister via email to which I await a reply and via his Facebook page. My comments inviting him to face an advertised public meeting when he returns in a few weeks time were deleted and I was blocked from commenting on his page. Government is supposed to be for the people not of the people. If representatives are not willing to face the public we have a serious problem. I contacted a number of people who have been active on these topics for a number of years and have an in depth knowledge of the topics to see if they were invited to the meeting last week. They hadn’t, likely as their views are opposed that of the government particularly on the MDBP. The destruction caused by the MDBP must be stopped yet the current government ignores the indisputable evidence put before it including at the Senate Inquiry several years ago as they push ahead with their own agenda. Face the public and listen to the genuine concerns of all in the area not just the chosen ones. Yours sincerely, Nigel Hicks Wyuna Want to have your say? A taste of Albanian culture

A DELIGHT FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES… The Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival will be bursting with fresh foods and fun. From left, Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival fruit donation organisers, Shane Ahmet and Safet Kurolli. Photo: Alicia Niglia.

EARLY Albanian settlers came to the Shepparton region more than 100 years ago. Traditionally Albanians worked in fruit and vegetable industry and ‘The Harvest Festival ’ was a day created to celebrate marking the end of the harvest season. In it’s 19th year, the Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival is open to the public again this Sunday March 18 from 11am to 4pm. Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival event co-ordinator, Reg Qemal said, “The Harvest Festival is a day of celebration marking the end of the harvest season and a day to celebrate our culture. At the Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival most of the fruit and vegetables are donated and the event itself is huge. “We have expanded the children’s zone this year and entry is just a gold coin donation. This year’s major raffle prize is a trip to Albania valued at $5,000 and this event brings interstate visitors who are making a weekend of it. “Our goal is to see this event become one of the largest Albanian events in Australia and given we have at least 3,000 locally connected Albanians, this goal is very realistic and is one that is good for everyone.” The Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival is set for this Sunday, March 26 at the Shepparton Showgrounds and will be a great day out for the entire family. The festival will showcase Albanian food and culture with traditional Albanian folk dancing, band and DJ and activities for the whole family. T he event is suppor ted by t he Shepparton Albanian Women’s Committee and is proudly sponsored by Shepparton Show Me and Greater Shepparton City Council and is part of the annual Shepparton Festival. $30,000 up for grabs SHOPPING local helps to ensure that a community continues to thrive and over the next six weeks the community has the chance to go in the running to win big just by doing so. Now in its 16th year, The Adviser is proud to continue to be an integral part of the 2018 GMCU $30,000 Giveaway’s success. The Adviser managing director, Geoff Adams said, “The number of entries we have in the giveaway promotion continues

to climb, which just goes to show how many people shop locally and support the hundreds of local businesses we have in Greater Shepparton. “Over the next six weeks “We are often told by business owners, staff and shoppers alike how important they believe shopping local is and how pleased they are that The Adviser and GMCU are working together to help promote the importance of the initiative. “The most important aspect of the giveaway promotion is the ability to generate customer sales. During the 2017 promotion, the giveaway helped to generate over 90,000 individual purchases of $10 or more across a large number of participating local businesses and that certainly is exciting for the community. “There has never been a better time to get behind your local businesses and show your support. You never know, it may just work out that you are one of our lucky winners.” Refer to the back page of this feature for a list of all participating businesses.

What are some hobbies you have outside of work and which is the one you enjoy the most and why? My main hobbies include playing netball and going camping and fishing. I enjoy going camping on the river the most and fishing with my family. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why? I am very happy living in Australia‌ maybe Geelong. When you were younger what did you want to be when you grew up? Professional athlete (like most kids I think!). If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be and why? Phone, car, house, scrapbooking and boat. If you could retire tomorrow, what would you do? Travel around the whole of Australia with my dog, Woody. What is something that you have always wanted to do? Skydive. How would you spend the $1,000 weekly prize? Buy some more camping and fishing gear at BCF.

How would you spend the $10,000 grand prize and where would you go on holiday using the $5,000 holiday voucher? The money would go towards travelling around Australia. My dad took me fishing in the Northern Territory last year and I would love to take him this year. What is your favourite thing about shopping in Shepparton? I love the variety of shops.

of this year’s giveaway Isabella Pellegrino Job Title: GMCU Member Service Officer

What are some hobbies you have outside of work and which is the one you enjoy the most and why? Outside of work I enjoy photography, travel, dancing, reading and catching up with friends. I enjoy photography most because it allows me to be creative and to capture happy moments in time that I can always look back on and smile at. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why? Italy. I come from an Italian background and I’ve grown up with a love of good Italian food. If I could spend every day eating endless amounts of pasta surrounded by beautiful Italian countryside, I would be a very happy woman! When you were younger what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a teacher - I used to happily spend hours with my younger sister, Paris, marking assignments and teaching dolls how to write. If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be and why? My camera, my laptop, a ring my family gave me for my 18th birthday, a family photo and my Bible. If you could retire tomorrow, what would you do? I would travel overseas and explore Europe. What is something that you have always wanted to do? Experience a solar eclipse. How would you spend the $1,000 weekly prize? I would buy a new camera lens.

How would you spend the $10,000 grand prize and where would you go on holiday using the $5,000 holiday voucher? I would probably spend the $10,000 on more camera gear, clothes and some presents for my friends and family. With the $5,000 holiday voucher, I would travel to New Zealand– the scenery alone would make me very camera-happy! What is your favourite thing about shopping in Shepparton? I can nearly always find something that I love on sale.

Dementia Australia gets crafty donation By David Lee WITH over 2,000 locals currently diagnosed with dementia and that number set to double by 2050, a $4,000 donation made to Dementia Australia by the Kensington Gardens Craft Group will go a long way to

assisting people with the disease. Dementia Australia dementia consultant, Julie Jackson said, “Donations such as these are always important as it helps to go toward research for dementia. “These ladies have done an amazing job

and the donation will be put to good use. It will help towards finding a cure and better understanding dementia. “We’d like to thank the group for the lovely surprise and for their hard work and efforts.”

AROUND 170km of rumble strip line markings have been installed along the centreline of most 100km/h roads across the Greater Shepparton region, which VicRoads and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) hopes will prevent head-on crashes. As well as the centreline strips, rumble strip line marking will be installed along the edges of some Shepparton roads soon to prevent run-off-road crashes. Transport Accident Commission road safety lead director, Samantha Cockfield said, “A majority of road users are doing the right thing on the road, but the reality is mistakes happen. “By creating a safer Victorian road system we’re ensuring that death and serious injuries are not a consequence of those mistakes.” Safe System Road Infrastructure Program director, Bryan Sherritt said, “We’re installing rumble strip line-marking on high-speed roads to alert people if they stray from their lane - to prevent crashes and save lives.” TAC statistics show that in 2017, 25 people were killed on roads in the Hume region as the result of a vehicle veering out of its lane, with 18 lives lost in singlevehicle crashes on the roadside and seven deaths resulting from a head-on collision.

Move over rose gold and pretty pastels. Rich, opulent colours are back. Take inspiration from retro colour schemes – navy, olive, ruby red and forest green. These will create an instant modern look, either as a centrepiece such as a sofa, or as a stylish occasional chair. Finished in a striking navy blue with cosy cushioning.

Go natural

Earthy tones such as terracotta, tan and russet will make an entrance in 2018. Leather lounges and armchairs continue to trend and make a great long-term investment. Marble too continues to make an appearance and will add a touch of classic style with a modern twist to any room.

Wonderful wood Just like leather, natural timber

holds its own over time, so you can’t go wrong if you want to update your look with a new timber dining setting or bedroom furniture.

Cosy up In 2018, the emphasis is on comfort. Think cosy cushions, sink-back seats and snuggle-up lounges.

Three weeks before Thornton takes on Commonwealth Games By David Lee IN just three weeks, local lawn bowls player and coach, Josh Thornton will be taking on competitors in Lawn Bowls at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, joining Victorians, Barrie Lester, Carla Krizanic and Ken Hanson on the bowls team. The East Shepparton coach will compete on the Gold Coast as part of the para-sport team and says it’s amazing and to be picked for your country for anything is an amazing accomplishment. “Competing in the Commonwealth Games in your home country…I don’t have words to explain it all. “My friends and family will get to share this experience with me. They’ll all get to come along and watch and hopefully see some success. “New Zealand would probably have to be our main competition and we managed to get a win over them in November last year, but they will be a tough team to beat. South Africa won in Glasgow so whilst I’ve never played against them I assume they are going to be a hard team to beat.” The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4 to 15 at the Gold Coast.

PDFNL to not affiliate in 2018 T HE Picola District Football Netball League (PDFNL) has elected not to affiliate to A F L G oulbu rn Mu rray and A F L Victoria in 2018. The PDFNL Board had until 5pm on March 5 to accept a one-year affiliation offer with AFL Goulburn Murray, but failed to adhere to the deadline. The decision means that the PDFNL will no longer receive the benefits of affiliation, which include but are not limited to insurance, competition management and access to talent pathways, effective immediately. AFL Goulburn Murray Region general manager, Martin Gleeson said he was disappointed that the matter had dragged on for so long. “This is the fourth consecutive recent communication deadline PDFNL has not adhered to regarding affiliation,” Gleeson said.

“Both A F L Goulburn Murray and A FL Victoria have provided multiple opportunities over the past two years for the PDFNL to discuss its reservations with affiliation, which they repeatedly chose not to participate in. “After missing three additional deadline extensions provided by AFL Goulburn Murray, it’s clear from the lack of timely correspondence that the PDFNL does not have the best interest of the game and its clubs in mind,” Gleeson said. Despite the decision, PDF N L clubs will remain affiliated with the Region Commission for the next two weeks and be provided with the option of joining an AFL Goulburn Murray managed football netball competition for season 2018. “For country Victoria to maintain its status and indeed grow, the clubs must be vibrant and financially sustainable,” Gleeson said.

“As such, AFL Goulburn Murray’s focus will continue to be in supporting its Clubs to ensure the long-term sustainability of community football in the region. “If there is interest from clubs in remaining within the system, including insurance, player transfer regulations and pathway programs then it’s important that they be provided with an option to do so. “As well as retaining the current benefits of affiliation the alternate competition will be governed by a local advisory committee, be administered from the AFL Goulburn Murray office and will engage the services of an affiliated umpiring group to officiate matches. “ T h e t wo - w e e k c o n t i nu a t i o n o f affiliation also allows for clubs to continue training with the protection of the current insurance as well as maintaining player registrations and movements and access to the SportsTG database,” Gleeson said.

Magpies fly into town AFL players from the Collingwood FC took some time out to visit the region yesterday as part of the AFL Goulburn Murray Player Appearance program. With a focus on reaching out to locals of all ages, primary schools, secondary schools and Harmony Village retirement home all got involved in the program. In addition to the school visits, fans had an opportunity to meet players as they visited Thompson Holden where fans competed with players in a handball competition, and had the chance to snag some autographs and take a photos. A F L G oulbu rn Mu rray football development manager, Mark Lambourn said, “This visit from Collingwood was a fantastic opportunity to have AFL players visit the students and retirees of the Goulburn Valley and everyone involved was very excited about catching up with the Magpies players.”
