Agreement reached on MDB Plan AN agreement has been reached between the Turnbull Government and Labor, which will see the entire Murray-Darling Basin Plan delivered, including the Northern Basin Review. Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, the Hon. David Littleproud MP said, “I reached out across the aisle to seek bipartisanship and aimed to provide leadership on this issue from day one. We rarely achieve lasting results by going to war.
“Labor and Tony Burke created the plan and I’m delivering it as I promised to. In my short time as minister I hope to have demonstrated that transparency, integrity and compliance are important to me. Given this, I’m rapt with adjustments which will now be made to the plan. “Labor sought more clarity and firm assurances on a number of issues. “The Government has reiterated its commitment to the 450 gigalitres and the
process of attaining it can now begin. “This agreement finally provides certainty to the two million people who live in the basin. People who are fatigued from the stress of not knowing how much water – the economic driver for most of these communities – will be in their district next year. Not knowing if farmers will make money and employ people next year; not knowing if their own families, farms and businesses will be hurt.”
$2,000 donation offers others hope CONTINUING their support of the Horses for Hope program, members of the Mooroopna Kiwanis Club have recently donated $2,000 to the program. The donated funds provided by the Mooroopna Kiwanis Club will help to subsidise the cost of the program for people who are unable to access funding opportunities or who can’t afford the program. Horses for Hope has been operating in the Shepparton area since 2003 and is best known for the work it does as a successful and engaging equine therapy practise where participants are guided in helping with the rehabilitation of troubled horses. Horses for Hope team leader and councillor, Colin Emonson said, “We do this because there are a lot of people out there who desperately need counselling support but who can’t cope with other talking therapies.”

With a little help from my friends
PEOPLE need to know that they are not alone in life’s adversities. Women in business face multiple challenges and are buoyed by the support that can come from a network of women who understand and have experienced those same challenges.
WOW Women Group founder and CEO, Tracey Sofra works hard to find ways of supporting women in business and the 2018 WOW Women event, which took place on Sunday, May 6 is an example of that. Tracey said, “This year’s WOW Women event was absolutely brilliant, Tracey Spicer was our guest speaker and she is just such a lovely and inspirational woman. The biggest message I took away from this years event is to remain humble, to give back and to serve mankind in whatever I do. “The annual WOW Women event acts to bring women together, to learn from each other and to share in their experiences.
Women never really put themselves first this event is a great opportunity to do that. Through ongoing support and events like these, my hope is to prepare the next generation of women in business to work together and share their wisdom.” The 2018 WOW Women event was sponsored by ANZ, Sofra Partners Chartered Accountants, SOFCORP Financial Services, Riverview Dental, Fernwood, TBA Law, Willprint Shepparton, Asthetique Skin Care, Forever in Bloom and Renato’s Florist and supported by The Adviser, Channel 9, Hit 96.9 Goulburn Valley and 95.3 Triple M Goulburn Valley.
Kindergarten enrolments for 2019 now open GR E AT ER Shepparton Cit y Council would like to notify parents and carers of children turning four by April, 30 2019 that kindergarten enrolment registrations for 2019 are now open. The Victorian Government provides funding to services to contribute to the cost of running a funded kindergarten program, which helps keep fees for fouryear-old kindergarten as low as possible. The kindergarten fee subsidy allows eligible children to access up to 15 hours of kindergarten delivered by a qualified early childhood teacher in the year before school for free or at low cost. Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Children and Youth Services, Sally Rose said the kindergarten year is a very important step
in the development and learning process. “I strongly encourage parents and carers, to visit local kindergartens prior to enrolment to meet with staff and discuss their individual child’s needs. It’s also helpful to find out if the centre offers a program that suits your family’s needs in terms of days, times and fees.” M s Rose sa id cou nci l faci l it ated kindergarten enrolment registrations for most funded kindergarten programs in Greater Shepparton. Ms Rose said parents would receive notification of places by late September. “While we try to accommodate parents’ requests for kindergarten at particular centres, this is not always possible, so if parents don’t receive a place at the centre of their first preference they can accept a place at an
alternative centre or wait and see if a space at their preferred centre becomes available,” Ms Rose said. Funded kindergarten services also support Early Start to Kindergarten, which is a free service for families with three or four-year-old children who meet the eligibility criteria giving access to two years of kindergarten. Enrolment can be completed online or forms are available at kindergartens, long day care centres and other early childhood services, as well as the Greater Shepparton City Council office in Welsford Street. Applications close Monday, July 30, 2018. For online enrolments, visit greatershepparton.com.au/kindergarten or for more information, contact the Central Enrolment Officer on 5832 9700.

In memory of Joyce Mabel Auldrige December 2, 1929 – April 2, 2018
ON April 2 this year, the local community, and family and friends said a fond farewell to Joyce Mabel Auldrige, who not only had strong ties with the local area, but was also a long-time and valued staff member at The Adviser.
Page 10 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1404 Wednesday, May 9, 2018
Joyce was born on December 2, 1929 at home in Long Gully, Bendigo. She was the sixth and last child of Frank and Agnes Williams. Before Joyce, came Les, Olga, Harry, Maurice and Betty. Joyce went to Long Gully Primary School and then onto Bendigo High School. At 14 she left school and following in older sister Betty’s footsteps, went to Bendigo Business College where she learnt typing, shorthand and bookkeeping. She completed her studies in 1945 at the age of 16 and then entered the workforce, firstly working at Ashman’s Menswear and later at Morley Johnsons and Beaurepaires in Bendigo, until she married husband, Vern in 1954. She re-joined the workforce in Shepparton in the early 70s when her youngest son, Nick went to high school. She was employed to sort out the accounts at Riordans Shoe Store for three weeks and ended up staying three years. Kevin Riordan, who had been mayor of Shepparton, later employed Joyce to work as his secretary. Following on from that she established and managed the Shepparton office of Latrobe Health Services and in 1984 started her last job at The Shepparton Adviser newspaper, when she was 55, and where she stayed until retiring in 1994. Geoff Adams and his father, Geoff Adams snr established The Shepparton Adviser in August 1984, and Joyce came on board three months later. Geoff recounted memories of Joyce at that job interview she was the stand out candidate and even today remembered what she was wearing – a dark green jumper with a beautiful brooch, (there was always a brooch), a lovely skirt, (that would have been a pleated Fletcher Jones skirt) and stylish shoes. Joyce took on the responsibility of running the business as if she owned it – she immersed herself in publishing, learning every aspect of it. Geoff also said that she was very disciplined, and that she set high standards for herself and expected them in others. So impressive in fact, that Joyce was entrusted to manage the personal affairs of Geoff Adams snr over many years after he moved to England. In 1951 Joyce began going out with a very handsome young man named Vernon Auldrige. They met at a dance, though they’d known each other for many years
prior to this through their church. They were married on February 6, 1954 at All Saints Cathedral in Bendigo and the happy marriage lasted 51 years. In 1955, Joyce and Vern moved to Korumburra where Vern took up the position of manager of Williams the Shoeman. It was here where they had their three children, William (Dec.), Susan and Nicholas (Dec.), (better known as Bill, Sue and Nick). In her spare time, Joyce could always be found in her garden. She was truly blessed with a green thumb, something she inherited from her mother; it always looked immaculate – picture postcard perfect! In fact, Joyce’s flowers often adorned the St. Augustine’s Anglican Church in Shepparton. Wherever Joyce lived, she was very active in the church and the local community. She was in the Mother’s Union and Women’s Guild for the longest time at St Augustine’s, the Mother’s Club at the children’s schools and on the Tarcoola Au x iliar y (the fundraising arm of Tarcoola Aged Care Villages) for many years. She often took on the role of either president or secretary and carried out her duties assiduously. Everyone who knew Joyce was well aware of her great love of and talent for cooking. Any celebration was an excuse to prepare a feast; pavlova, cheesecake, pineapple delicious, jelly slice, sponges, scones in fact all varieties of cakes and slices. She made all the celebration cakes for family and friends for weddings, christenings and 21st birthdays. Joyce could not have been more proud of her two beautiful granddaughters, Amy and Kate. She delighted in their achievements and even more so in their company. It wa s s om e wh at i nc re d ible t h at business matters took son-in-law, Gary, to Shepparton over the last eight months, as Joyce was definitely in the Gary cheer squad. Her bright blue eyes would always light up if he walked in the door – sometimes with flowers or a cake or just for a quick chat. Joyce will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunty and was loved by many. Joyce is survived by her daughter, Susan, son-in-law, Gary and granddaughters, Amy and Kate.

Shepparton’s new fast food alternative By Nicholise Garner I LOVE that feeling I get when I eat well, as opposed to the feeling I get when I’ve filled up on takeaway. In the past, being reliant on fast food has generally meant having access to less healthy options, but now, right here in Shepparton we have the all new Oliver’s Real Food for a huge range of healthy fast food options. Oliver’s Real Food chief executive officer, Greg Madigan said, “At Oliver’s Real Food, we believe that a vital component of good health is when a person takes interest in the quality of food they are eating. Too many of us live our lives with little aches and pains, coughs and colds, indigestion, constipation and excess weight and we think it’s normal to feel like this. At Oliver’s we make choosing healthy food easy.” With zero additives or numbers, Oliver’s have a huge menu catering to celiacs, vegans and vegetarians alike. Whatever your dietary needs, speak to the team at Oliver’s. Experience Oliver’s for yourself at 622 Wyndham Street, Shepparton, opposite 95.3 Triple M radio station.

Fairleys celebrates new development permit continued from front page AFTER an extensive process including six economic reports, three planning reports, two Victorian Planning Panel hearings and reports, three VCAT appeals, a draft Urban Design Framework, a third Panel hearing (on-going), the matter has finally been resolved to approve the construction of the community hub at Hawkins Street with
two full-line supermarkets including Fairleys SUPA IGA, many ancillary shops, medical and community offices. VCAT, Greater Shepparton City Council, the developer Shepparton Pty Ltd and, Fairleys SUPA IGA, a respondent throughout the process with a vested interest to keep serving the community, have all agreed the granting of the planning permit to commence construction of the 14,000sqm retail project.

There were no community objections to the latest set of plans circulated last month. Fairleys SU PA IGA proprietor and M ichaels IGA general manager, L en Morabito said, “At last, after years of to-ing and fro-ing and many planning iterations, this is all behind us and construction by the developers can move forward. “The developers commenced preparatory ground work nearly a year ago but it was
interrupted by a series of review processes. Now these processes have run their race and are all resolved. “Fairleys SUPA IGA anticipates a great new store for our customers, still with the biggest range in Shepparton and of course sharpest pricing. We have been here for more than 130 years and we will have a new lease of life with a brand spanking new store in a greatly redeveloped centre.”

GIFT GUIDE & COMPETITION SUNDAY 13 MAY 2018
The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart By Nicholise Garner TA K I NG time out to read a book is something I consider a real pleasure and frankly, with six children at home, it’s a luxury! For me, reading is an opportunity
to lose myself for a period of time, an opportunity for silence and to be lead into a journey from the comfort of my home. Recently I was lucky enough to meet with author, Holly Ringland during her visit to Collin’s Booksellers in Shepparton. I was struck by Holly’s brimming smile, her down to earth nature and pure likeability. Holly’s recently released debut book ‘The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart’ has already been receiving great reviews which is no surprise to me as it’s such an enchanting story. Beautifully written and set in Australia, this book takes the reader on a sometimes difficult journey through a young girl’s life, examining bonds between women and family, the most subtle forms of communication, love, betrayal and life’s purpose. It’s an earthy and heart touching story that will have the reader looking at our native flowers with new meaning. Do mum a favour and get her an autographed copy of Holly Ringland’s ‘The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart’ from Collin’s Booksellers. Visit Collins Booksellers at 262 Maude Street, Shepparton.

Mother’s Day heart fingerprint tree What you need: • Two sheets of white paper • Ink pads – reds and pinks (you can also use finger paints) • Black marker • Scissors • Pencil (optional) Method: First we need to make a heart stencil. The easiest way to go about it (in our honest opinion) is to fold a sheet of paper in half and draw a half-heart shape. You can easily cut the heart out then, just by cutting along the line. Place the sheet of paper with the heart outline on top of a regular sheet of white paper. For younger kids you can secure it with some tape so it won’t move around while they get creative. With a black marker, draw a tree within the heart shape. Now it is time to get messy with your

fingers. Dab your fingers (thumbs and fingertips to get different shapes) in the ink pads and ‘stamp’ them all over the heart shape. Do this until you are happy with how thick the leaves on the tree are. Remove the sheet of paper with the heart outline. Draw the rest of the tree trunk, if necessary.

Shepparton rail the big winner in state budget $23M in funding has also been pledged for the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence, $20.5M for the Shepparton Education Plan to fund a new super secondary school and Mooroopna Integrated Children’s Centre, $20M to upgrade roundabouts on the Shepparton Alternate Route, $500,000 for upgrades to Ardmona Primary School, $400,000 for a masterplan for the Barmah visitor precinct as well Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed: “The 2018/19 Victorian State Budget marks a turning point for the region. “This is an incredible time for Shepparton District. “We have already had more than $230M committed to major infrastructure projects such as the redevelopment of GV Health, the new Shepparton Art Museum and preliminary road and rail works by this Government, so to see that followed up with another huge investment is so pleasing. “The $313M for the Shepparton train line will be a game-changer for the entire region and, together with the funding for the Shepparton Education Plan, will also help create so many opportunities for our young people. “These have been priority areas for me since entering Parliament and I am just so excited about what this will mean for the future of our region. “It has been almost four years since our community set its agenda and I don’t think any of us could have imagined what such a massive investment in our region would look like, but here we are and it is wonderful. “This community has spent a long time calling for a better deal for Shepparton district, so this is a big win for everyone who has contributed.” Committee for Greater Shepparton CEO, Sam Birrell: “The Victorian State Budget has delivered significant investment for Greater Shepparton in many areas that Committee for Greater Shepparton has been advocating for over its five year history. The main feature of the budget from a Greater Shepparton perspective is $313M to upgrade the Shepparton rail line. “This will allow up to nine daily services of velocity trains between Shepparton and Melbourne. The committee highlighted the inequality in regional rail funding in a report released earlier this year and it is pleasing to see
as a funding boost for Neighbourhood House programs and the establishment of a regional jobs procurement office in Shepparton to ensure local businesses benefit directly from government funded projects. This year’s budget brings the total investment in the electorate since the 2014 election to more than half a billion dollars.
the government has heeded the call. “$20M for the alternate route upgrade and $23M for the Munarra Centre for Regional Excellence are also projects that the Committee has advocated for. “The committee has also been vocal on the skills shortage for regional industries and welcomes funding for the first stage of the Shepparton Education Plan as well as free TAFE courses particularly in the areas of agriculture and nursing. “Overall this is an example of what can be achieved with united community leadership and the committee.” Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell: “The 2018/19 State Budget is one full of smoke and mirrors. “The Andrews Labor Government trumpets a $313M announcement for passenger rail but the details of the budget reveal that only $5M will to be spent in the 2018/19 financial year, pushing out any improvements to Shepparton passenger rail services for many years. “I am bitterly disappointed that the recent announcement of $20.5M for the Shepparton Education Plan (SEP) has also been placed on the ‘never never’ with the budget revealing that only just over $500,000 will be spent on the plan in the next 12 months. “Educators and the wider Shepparton com mu n it y were hopi ng for f u r t her commitments to the SEP in this budget but instead it has been revealed that the $20.5M will be spent over the next five meaning we will not see the completion of stage 1 of the new secondary college until the start of the 2022 school year at the earliest. “This was the case with most of Shepparton’s budget commitments including the Munarra Centre, the Shepparton Alternate Route road upgrade and the Shepparton bypass funding being spread over multiple financial years.”
Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe: “We’re very excited and very thrilled (about the state budget announcement). It is something that council and the community desperately need, with the announcement of $313M for rail. “This is a game changer for our community and is something that is going to really leverage the success and really help us move forward. “The economic benefit is going to be very significant. “We are very happy with the $20M toward the education plan, $20M to the Munarra Centre and $20M to roads. “We have been working very hard over this past 12 months, particularly with our local MPs. We are all rallying together and I think that the message has been received loud and clear. “There are a lot of discussions to be had as to where it’s going to head and start.” V/Line regional manager north/ north east, Michael Brady: “We are very excited with the rail funding announcement. V/Line is all about community engagement and bringing communities together and this will allow our customers more choice on how and when they travel. “All stages of the upgrade will include funding for Velocity train stabling at or near Shepparton. It will also include platform extensions at Shepparton, Mooroopna, Murchison East and Nagambie, track signalling upgrades and 54 level crossing upgrades. “Works have already started on stage one which includes site investigations at Murchison East as well as design works for the stabling upgrades at Shepparton. “We’re on track to deliver the stabling upgrades for Shepparton by the end of this year, which will enable the fifth daily return service by early next year on Shepparton line. “This is a great outcome for all of our customers on that line.”

BOMBERS VS BEARS… The grand final rematch between Shepparton and Kyabram will be the game to watch this week. Pictured, Axel Childs (Kyabram) and Liam Duguid (Shepparton). Photo: Bailey Opie Photography.
The grand final rematch KYABR AM sit on top of the ladder undefeated which is no surprise as they meet Shepparton in match of the round and a replay of last years grand final. The Bombers are coming off absolutely smashing Shepparton Swans last week and broke the 200 point barrier even without star forward, Kyle Mueller. They did have a handy replacement in Lord Paul though in Paul Newman who eased himself back into Goulburn Valley footy with two goals. Kayne Pettifer continues his starring role and now has 28 goals after six rounds and an eye on cracking the century this year and along with Sam Sheldon, Lachie Smith and Liam Ogden on fire will be hard to stop. The Bears have been in ok form after a
tight tussle with Seymour before having last week off. They would love nothing more than to turn the tables on the grand final result of last year. Ash Holland is having a great year along with Nick Rokahr, Rowan Hiscock and Mitch Brett when he turns up. It’s a tough ask for the Bears and Kyabram will continue on their merry way and will collect the four points. In other games, Euroa will account for the Swans, second placed Benalla will be too strong for Echuca, Shepparton United will be gallant in defeat to Rochester at Deakin Reserve, Seymour to defeat Mansfield at Kings Park and Tatura to have a big win over Mooroopna at Tatura Park.

Dysons driving interleague DYSONS Bus Company has secured the rights as the official interleague transport company for AFL Goulburn Murray partner leagues for the next three years. The partnership will see partner leagues using Dysons transport to travel to their away interleague clashes as part of the AFL Victoria Community Championships. AFL Goulburn Murray Region general manager, Martin Gleeson welcomed the innovative new partnership. “Dysons are a very reputable transport company and we are excited to be able to partner with them to serve the needs of our partner leagues over the next three years,” Gleeson said. “Interleague is a very important program in each League but the transportation of players and officials to away games is a significant cost that must be met. “This is particularly relevant this year with the KDFNL travelling to Colac, GVL football travelling to Melbourne, GVL netball going to Yarrawonga and the Northern Country Women’s League playing their interleague clash against Central Victoria in Bendigo. “Through the support of Dysons the significant cost of transportation has been dealt with and each League knows they will be travelling in safety and comfort.” Dysons Shepparton depot manager, Roy Dyson is pleased

to be able to support community football and netball in this way. “As a family business, Dysons has a deep understanding of the importance of local sport and the important role it plays in the community,” Roy said. “We have a strong affinity with local clubs and community sport and this partnership will help us put
something back to the community we live and work in as well as celebrating the prestige of representative football and netball. “Interleague is the chance for the best players to come together and represent their club and their league and we are excited to be able to be a part of it and help out.”
