Give with a $95M investment to build Murray- personal touch Darling Medical Schools Network THE Minister for Rural Health, Senator Bridget McKenzie joined Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum in a tour of the University of Melbourne Shepparton campus, making the announcement that more than $95M would be put towards the Murray-Darling Medical Schools Network to help transform the way doctors are trained and retained in regional areas. Minister McKenzie said, “The University of Melbourne, in co-operation with La Trobe and Monash Universities, will provide country kids with a comprehensive education, training and clinical experience program, giving them the knowledge and skills they need to become country doctors without leaving their homes.” Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum said, “The new network will deliver great results for the Goulburn Valley and Shepparton,” Mr Drum said. Missed appointments causing headaches By David Lee WITH 6,389 people failing to arrive for their appointments at the GV Health Specialist Consulting Suites last year, management at the suites are calling on the community to ensure they make contact in the event they cannot make it to ensure the flow of patients seen isn’t interrupted. Last year, 34,810 patients were seen at the suites, and so far this year 12,844 have made their appointments, but in April alone, over 500 people didn’t show for their appointment. GV Health Specialist Consulting Suites nurse unit manager, Helen Pettifer said, “People forget that we’re not a general practitioner service, we offer appointments with specialists and these appointments are often made by referral, and a lot of the specialists come from Melbourne to be here for these appointments. “We strive to provide a good service in the community so it is disappointing when

Diversity celebrated DIVERSITY was celebrated at La Trobe University on Thursday last week as part of International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism & Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). Greater Shepparton LGBTI+ Alliance members, including Goulburn Valley Pride, Uniting Kildonan’s Diversity Project, La Trobe University/Shepparton Students’ Association, GOTA FE , Berry Street / Education First Youth Foyer, Primary Care Connect, headspace Shepparton, Word and Mouth and The Community Fund GV (among others) came together to hold the event, where members of the community came together to celebrate, network, share resources and watch the raising of a rainbow flag to mark the special day and recognise the importance of IDAHOBIT to the LGBTI+ community.

BVRG5007W1A

Uniting diversit y suppor t worker, Georgina Poort said, “IDAHOBIT (known by variating acronyms depending on the country) is now celebrated in over 130 countries, including 37 where same-sex acts are still illegal. IDAHOBIT is not a singular, centralised campaign, but a global movement that can be used by anyone to push the recognition of human rights for all people irrespective of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.” GV Pride secretary, Damien Stevens said, “On May 17 people all over Australia stood against discrimination in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) mates, colleagues and families. “It was the perfect opportunity for schools and workplaces to start small changes that can make a big difference.”

Will you get SAM’s latest exhibition?

INTRIGUING ART… One of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, Raquel Ormella with one of her works as part of her ‘I Hope You Get This’ exhibit which kicks off at Shepparton Art Museum from May 26. Photo: Nicholise Garner.

TAKE a look at Shepparton Art Museum’s (SAM) latest exhibition and see if ‘you get it.’ Works reflecting on the intersections of art and activism by one of Australia’s leading contemporary artists, Raquel Ormella will be exhibited at SAM, from May 26 to August 12 with the title of the exhibit ‘I Hope You Get This.’ Raquel employs a wide variety of media, including video, painting, installation, drawing, textile, paintings and zine production. ‘I hope you get this’ features some of her seminal early works, alongside more recent textile and text-based works, and new commissions. The exhibition reveals Ormella’s experimental relationship with textiles and a playful exploration of semiotics, critical hallmarks of her sustained practice. Curated by SAM director, Dr Rebecca Coates and SAM senior curator, Anna Briers, the survey exhibition will feature four significant bodies of work within the artist’s

oeuvre, as well as a site-responsive commission. The exhibition was supported by National Exhibitions Touring Support (NETS) Victoria’s Exhibition Development Fund and will tour nationally through a SAM and NETS Victoria partnership across Australia. Raquel said, “My inspiration is drawn from the concept of our national identity, which I have featured in my works for over 10 years. “I’m interested in the ways we have a view of things nationally. One of my pieces displays the words ‘golden promise’ but it is tattered. This symbolises the idea that we have access to education, health and that Australia operates on a ‘fair go’ system and that is our golden promise, but this is a tattered view. We often don’t talk about the bigger picture.” An official opening event will be held at SAM on Friday, May 25 at 6pm.

Riverlinks and ILBIJERRI Theatre Company present Which Way Home - the heartwarming ‘dramedy’ of an Aboriginal girl, her much loved ageing dad and their road trip to his birthplace. It’s his return home to country, where the sky is higher and the world goes on forever. Which Way Home draws on writer Katie Beckett’s personal memories of growing up with her single Aboriginal father. Her mother died when she just five years old, leaving her father to raise three children. He also lost his sister, grandmother and mum all within the space of a month. “The reason I wrote Which Way Home was because I love my dad. That’s it. It’s truly that simple. I’m daddy’s baby pie. (He still calls me that by the way and I’m 34

years old). It wasn’t an easy time but he did it. He is a loving, wonderful, strong man. I have had a lot of wonderfully strong and emotionally in tune, generous men around me growing up and I was wondering why don’t I see the Aboriginal men that I grew up with represented on stage, on TV, on film?,” said Katie Beckett, previous recipient of The Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award. A WARMING PASTRY FROM AN AWARD WINNING BAKERY

130 Hogan St, Tatura • Ph 5824 1267

THERE are a few simple things you should do if you are injured at work or in a transport accident. Nevin Lenne Gross principal lawyer, Helen Collins, said, “If you are injured at work, report the injury to your employer within 30 days of becoming aware of the injury. You can do this by completing an incident report form, but if there is no form, then write a note or an email. Also see your doctor about the injuries and tell your doctor how you were injured. Then lodge a claim form as soon as

Lodge a claim with the TAC within one year of the accident; this is done by phone initially. Then see a lawyer with transport accident compensation experience.” Nevin Lenne Gross offer a free initial consultation for injured people. Find them at 361 Wyndham Street, Shepparton. Energy Safe Victoria has issued a Safety Alert for Pyrox Heritage or Vulcan Heritage gas space heaters. These heaters can be easily identified by the Pyrox or Vulcan branding and a ‘Heritage’ marking on the front, lower left-hand corner.

NOW in its 22nd year, local automotive electrical business, T & M Batteries is continuing to provide the highest level of service to customers over the Greater Valley and for your road trips, can help you out with your motorhome and campervan as well any tow vehicle you may have. Proprietors, Trevor and Meg Cook say people often underestimate the importance of their motor vehicles’ electrical system. Trevor said. “Many people don’t realise that five of the major reasons a car won’t start have to do with problems with the electrics. Your starter motor, alternator, battery, ignition and wiring are all auto-electrical components.”

What do I do? If you have one of these heaters, do not use it until it can be tested by a qualified gasfitter.

For people living in DHHS housing DHHS is testing all Heritage heaters in their properties. Phone DHHS on 1800 148 426 for more information.

T & M Batteries are distributors of the popular Delkor range of batteries and stock batteries for cars, trucks, tractors, motorbikes and more. With three qualified auto electricians, they offer comprehensive advice and repairs regarding alternators, starter motors, auto air-conditioning, auto-electrical repairs and dual battery systems. The showroom stocks many automotive accessories such as solar panels, battery chargers, heavy duty jumper leads, trailer plugs, switches, globes and much more. Look out for the giant battery on the storefront roof at T & M Batteries, 82 Benalla Road, Shepparton or phone 5831 7200.

Phone Climate Technologies on (03) 8795 2462 for more information. In the meantime, please use other sources of heating. Do not bring outdoor gas heaters (such as a patio heater) inside. This is dangerous and can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

For private homes The manufacturer Climate Technologies will arrange for a test by a qualified gasfitter.

VG2453

When used in certain conditions, particularly in homes with poor ventilation and when bathroom exhaust fans or kitchen rangehoods are used at the same time, these heaters can spill dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

A clever solution to

Victoria’s rural La Trobe University is joining forces with the University of Melbourne to ensure we will have enough doctors in rural and regional Victoria. Together we will train GPs in the regions – providing an innovative local solution to a local problem. From 2019 a new La Trobe biomedical degree starts in Albury-Wodonga and Bendigo, flowing into a new University of Melbourne Doctor of Medicine degree in Shepparton. This program is a great shot in the arm for our regional communities. It will build local capacity and most importantly, with rurally trained doctors more likely to practice in the regions, this initiative will make a lasting and positive impact – improving health outcomes for local people. www.latrobe.edu.au

Greater Shepparton City Council Deputy Mayor, Cr Seema Abdullah said, “I encourage the community to take part in the consultation and complete the survey in order to provide their feedback on this significant project.” The four concept designs and survey can be found at

FOUR new concepts for the Maude Street Mall were released for public comment following last week’s ordinary council meeting, with seven of the councillors present voting to release the options, which would cost between $15M and $18M to carry out, to the community. The consultation process opened on Wednesday last week and consists of an online survey where participants are asked to describe what they like or dislike about each of

THE release of four new concept designs for the Maude Street Mall precinct by Greater Shepparton City Council is the culmination of many years of procrastination by successive councils, management and businesses. At last there is something serious to consider by business, organisations, governments and the wider community. T he M aude S t re e t M a l l pre c i nc t options have excellent potential to bring life back to the city in so many ways. T he M aude St reet preci nc t cou ld have the best of just about everything, a c o m bi n at io n of t r e e s a n d f lo r a beautification, parking (which is critical t o s u c c e s s f u l c o m m e r c e), s e at i n g , walkways and slow moving traffic for a whole lot of reasons. Let’s hope the preferred option chosen is not a replica of failed malls such as Shepparton’s, Bendigo’s relatively new upgraded mall and many others around the country. The Adviser commends the Greater S h e pp a r ton C it y C ou n c i l w it h it s commissioning of the options.

The four concept designs and survey can be found at www.greatershepparton. com.au and will be displayed at council’s Welsford Street office as well as the Think CBD Office located at Shop 5 in the Tower Arcade, Maude Street Mall. There will be community information sessions held at 12:30pm on Monday, May 28 and 6pm Tuesday, May 29 at the Senior Citizens Centre, 132 Welsford Street, Shepparton. The consultation will be live until June 30 2018.

The key points of each option are: OPTION ONE… Re-introduction of two-way traffic with 34 new car parks, shared bike lanes, events space, speed limit of 20 km/h. OPTION TWO… Opposing one-way traffic from Fryers and High Streets with 37 new car parks, shared bike lanes, events space, speed limit of 20 km/h. OPTION THREE… A new central public space, shared landscape, events space. OPTION FOUR… A shared streetscape with one-way traffic, 41 new car parks, shared bike lanes, events space, speed limit of 20 km/h.

Football Followers have the chance to WIN BIG during the 2018 AFL football season with Viatek/The Adviser Football Tipping Competition. Each week there will be a prize of $50 to be spent at any of the 19 supporting business houses. All you have to do is place a tick against the football team that you think will win each game. Be careful with your selections as only correct entries will go into the draw for the weekly $50 voucher. If no correct entry is received the prize will jackpot each week until a correct entry is submitted. Entries will only be accepted at the office, 219-225 Wyndham Street, Shepparton, no later than 5pm on each Friday during 2018, unless stated otherwise due to matches being played outside the normal weekend. Entries must be on original forms – no faxes or photocopies will be accepted and only one entry per household is permitted. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

CAN THE MAGPIES DO IT?… The match between Euroa and Shepparton will be tight game, but can Euroa get across the line? Pictured, Andrew Bell (Euroa). Photo: Bailey Opie Photography.

THIS week’s match of the round between Shepparton and Euroa has enormous ramifications as the loser will drop to seventh. That’s quite extraordinary when both these clubs would consider themselves a chance to play in the 2018 grand final. The Bears come off a very disappointing showing two weeks ago versus Kyabram. Seven goals down at quarter time with the final margin being 11 goals would have dented their confidence but that was Kyabram. Ash Holland in the ruck needs a big game and the form of Xavier Stevenson, John Bradaric who kicked three goals last week, David Stretton and Harry Boyd is what the Bears need to continue. The Magpies on the other hand are coming off a percentage-boosting win over the hapless Swans with multiple goal

kickers in the ‘three Js,’ Jamison Shea with six and Jarmyn Tremellen and Jett Trotter with four each. The form lines are complete opposites but both sides had opposition from each end of the ladder last start. This week will be a different story at Deakin Reserve and it will go down to the wire. Euroa for mine will just sneak over the line. Other matches will see Mansfield too strong in the mountains for the young Demons, Benalla to thump the Swans for the third week in a row, Tatura to consolidate third spot on the ladder with a win over Seymour, Echuca to get a scare from Mooroopna but will get the four points and do we need to say who wins in a Kyabram game anymore? Rochester will be gallant in defeat but the Bombers again.

First netballer to be inducted into Hall of Fame THE Goulburn Valley League will induct a fourth group of members into its Hall of Fame at a special Hall of Fame function on Sunday, June 3, to be held at the league’s function partner, the Shepparton RSL. Five new members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame with an exciting new addition to the Hall of Fame being the first netballer. GVL Hall of Fame Committee chairman, Freddo McMahon praised the vision of the Board in adding netball to the Hall of Fame. “We are delighted with the success of the previous Hall of Fame functions and now looked forward to recognising another group of people who have played a role in the success of the league,” Freddo said. “A major highlight of this year’s event will be the induction of the first netballer into the Hall of Fame which will add another dimension and recognises the GVL as a genuine football and netball league.
