Taking steps for premature babies H FAMILIES from across Australia will come together for several walk events on Sunday, October 28 in support of the 48,000 premature or sick babies born in Australia every year, with local resident and mum of a premature baby, Katrina Brereton organising an event in Nathalia. Katrina said, “My little girl, Haylee, was born at 31 weeks and weighed 3 pound 2, and while I was in the hospital the nurse told me about the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation and after giving them a call to talk about Haylee and what to do next, I found them to be a great support so it’s nice to be able to do something like this walk to give back to them. “Our aim is to try and raise $1,500. “The walk will take place at Nathalia Primary School from 9:30am to 1:30pm and will be around 1.9km.”
Walk for Prems 2018 is proudly presented by Baby Bunting and is the largest annual fundraiser for the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, Australia’s foremost charity dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. In its ninth year, Walk for Prems will take place simultaneously in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra and Perth, as well as regional locations such as Cairns, Townsville, Ballarat, the Goulburn Valley and Gippsland. At the beginning of each Walk for Prems 2018 event, participants will pause to show their respect for the families whose babies have sadly passed away. People can register for Walk for Prems 2018 or make a donation to Katrina at www.walkforprems.org.au

Snakes slither into spring
W I T H the weather warming up our coldblooded reptile friends are now becoming more active, and a lot more visible. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) regional manager environmental compliance, Nathan Stamkos said, “Snakes are emerging from their winter hibernation to bask in the sun and to search for food and a mate. “The recent sunny weather also means people are spending more time outdoors and it is quite likely they will encounter a snake. “Eastern brown snakes are the most common in north east Victoria with the occasional tiger snake or red bellied black snake, which are usually found around wetlands, creeks and rivers. “These three species are highly venomous, but it is rare for them to bite people. Most snake bites are received by people who
try to capture or kill a snake. “Snakes are known to bite animals, such as dogs, if they feel threatened. If your dog or cat encounters a snake, the best course of action is to remove your pet from the area or tie it up while the snake passes. If you suspect your pet has been bitten take it to a vet immediately. “We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that snakes play an important role in our ecosystem and are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. It is illegal to capture, harm, or kill them. Reports of people wilfully destroying protected wildlife will be investigated accordingly. “Being aware that snakes may be around, and being informed about how to react to them, are the most important aspects of managing snakes,” Mr Stamkos said.
IF YOU LIVE IN AN AREA WITH SNAKES, PLEASE REMEMBER: • When left alone, snakes present little or no danger to people. • If you see a snake, keep calm and move yourself and anyone with you (including pets) away from the area. • Don’t attempt to capture or harm snakes. Instead call DELWP on 136 186 for further advice, or call a licensed snake catcher.
• Maintain lawns and clean up around your house, as snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, and building materials. • Undertake first aid training and ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately.

A SUCCESSFUL TRIP… A group of pilgrims travelled to Bendigo to take part in mass and other Marian devotions in honour of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fatima. Photo: Supplied.
Goulburn Valley pilgrims visit Bendigo ON OCTOBER 7 two bus loads of pilgrims travelled to Bendigo from Cobram and on the way picked up more passengers, including those from Shepparton, arriving at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo in time for mass and other Marian devotions in honour of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fatima. Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fatima is a Catholic title of the Blessed Virgin Mary based on the famed Marian apparitions reported over several months in 1917 to three shepherd children in Covo da Iria, in Fatima Portugal. The three children were Lucia dos Santos and her cousin, Francisco and Jacinta Marto. Our Lady appeared to the three children on the 13th day of each month from May to October. The final day, October 13, 2017 was the day that brought thousands of people to witness the miracle of the ‘dancing sun’ at

Cova da Iria. Even the skeptics were converted and believed. Popes Pius XII, Paul Vl, Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis have all voiced their acceptance of the supernatural origin of the Fatima event and along with this year’s guest speaker, Bishop Les Tomlison, continue to spread the message from Our Lady to pray rosary for the good of the world. The rosary is not an extra option. It has the power to transform the world. The pilgrims who travelled to Bendigo all voiced their gratitude, were full of praise and felt that the day was a great blessing for all the participants; it was a sight for the eyes, a delight for the ears and a feast for the heart. A public square rosary will be held In St Brendan’s garden on Saturday, October 13 at 10:30am followed by morning tea and all are welcome.

RAISING AWARENESS FOR ORGAN DONATION… To help raise awareness for organ donation, this month people are being asked to wear one sock and post a photo to the Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation Facebook page. Photo: Katelyn Morse.
Don one sock this October LOCALS are being encouraged to wear just one sock any day of the week to work, school, at sporting games, at the gym or around your home this October in order to help raise awareness for those awaiting a transplant. Those waiting for a transplant in Australia today are always a tad uncomfortable, with this campaign seeing people wear one sock to be a tad uncomfortable themselves and walk in the footsteps/shoes of those who are waiting for a transplant. Known as ‘Socktober,’ the month is about showing support for organ and tissue donation and reflecting to others the care and wishes to see an increase in the organ and tissue donation rate in Australia. Those who take part are then asked to post their ‘one socked foot photo’ on social media and to take a photo of fellow workmates, students, friends and post it on the Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation Facebook page. In 2017, Australians had the highest donation rate in the past 46 years of transplants on record with 510 solid organ donors, giving 1,672 transplants to those that now have a second chance in life or a great improvement to their life, but we still need more people to keep donating at the end of life to keep this result high.

Saving for retirement when you have dependents PREPARING for retirement can be difficult for parents who have dependent children to support. However, you don’t have to sacrifice building a retirement fund while supporting your children. Forced saving can be your good ally in building your retirement fund. Voluntary contributions to your superannuation through salary sacrifice may help boost your nest egg. It may also help you reduce the amount of income tax you pay. Including your employer’s super guarantee contribution, you can make concessional super contributions of up to $25,000 each financial year. The government will tax your salary-sacrificed contributions at 15 percent, which could be much lower than your marginal tax rate. Outside of super, there are options that may help you save for retirement, such as buying an investment bond or
investing in a managed fund. You should seek advice before you decide if these options might work for you. While building your fund for old age and supporting your dependants, it is important to make sure you are protected against the risk of losing your current income. It is also critical to ensure your dependents are looked after if you die or become seriously ill or disabled. A life insurance policy may pay a specified amount to your beneficiaries when you die, offering a financial buffer even though you are no longer around to provide for them. Your adviser can help you assess your current situation and develop a strategy to support your dependents while building a nest egg for a comfortable retirement. For further information, contact the team at RI Advice Shepparton, 137 Maude Street, Shepparton or phone them on 5831 2833.

Liberal Nationals election promise to build faster rail LAST week the Liberal Nationals Government pledged to build faster rail between Shepparton and Melbourne that would double current maximum speeds, cutting travel times to under two hours if elected in November. The faster rail is said to slash travel times from the current 146 minutes to 117 minutes, a saving of around 30 minutes. Reaching speeds of up to 160km/h on the Shepparton line, the statewide network will be the fastest in Australia. The Shepparton line has a current maximum of around only 80km/h. An elected Liberal Nationals Government also pledges to double the number of Shepparton and
Melbourne weekday services and also pledges to fund new-generation, faster, long haul variants of the successful V/Locity trains which will provide better comfort and leg room, safety and amenity for passengers. At an estimated total cost of $15B to $19B, this super-infrastructure project will transform regional Victoria and is affordable, sensible and realistic. Building a faster and high speed rail network across Victoria will create at least 10,000 new jobs. Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy said, “Faster rail will unite our cities and grow the

whole state, not just Melbourne. “To build a state of cities and grow all of Victoria, we need to build faster rail connecting our regional centres and we need to grow regional jobs and deliver more services to the regions like teachers, doctors, healthcare workers and police.” Leader of The Nationals, Peter Walsh said, “When we reduce travel times we increase opportunities for people to live in one place and work in another.” Liberal Candidate for Shepparton, Cheryl Hammer said, “This announcement for fast rail is visionary and will make the difference here in
the Shepparton electorate for future economic growth, jobs and to encourage people to choose to live here. “This plan for European style fast rail will deliver the standard of public transport that we have been fighting for, and deserve, here in the Shepparton region.” The Nationals Candidate for Shepparton, Peter Schwarz said, “It’s going to be terrific for getting our commuters where they need to be, and it will also be a key driver to encourage more major employers to look at relocating to places like Shepparton and that means more jobs and more opportunities in regional Victoria.”

Get prepared this Fire Action Week OCTOBER 8 to 14 is Fire Action Week, an opportunity for Greater Shepparton residents to understand their fire risk and get prepared. Manager Citizen Services, Laurienne Winbanks said, “Victoria has already seen significant fires this year and above average conditions are forecast for the upcoming summer. “Council is reminding land owners to ensure long grass on their property is dealt with now leading into the summer fire danger period. “Everyone needs to be aware of their responsibilities to maintain their properties, particularly those in areas where grass fires can quickly take hold. Owners should cut back or reduce fine fuels including long or excessive grass and weeds and continue to maintain
their properties throughout the year. In rural areas, creating and maintaining fire breaks will assist in reducing the intensity of a fire if it occurred, as fine fuels are responsible for the major increase in fire intensity and spread. “Fire Action Week is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared. Talk to your family or household today about what you can do to prepare for the upcoming summer and how you plan to stay safe,” Ms Winbanks said. Musical casts spell on Mercy Place Shepparton residents RESIDENTS from Mercy Place Shepparton recently got up close with the cast from the local production of Wicked. Five residents attended the musical, accompanied by Mercy Place Shepparton service manager, Angela Marchant. The residents sat in the front row of the theatre and had their photo taken with the cast after the show. Wicked was the first musical 89-year-old Ida Landini has ever seen. Ms Landini was born in Italy and speaks limited English. “Despite the language barrier, Ida has been telling staff and residents how she would now like to go to more musicals,” Ms Marchant said. “The theatre group gave us a couple of [Wicked] programs and we purchased a couple as well so every resident could have a memento from the day. “One of our staff members is going to read Ida’s program to her in Italian so she can get a better feel for the storyline.” Attending community activities and being a part of the local community is widely encouraged at Mercy Place Shepparton. The home’s lifestyle team regularly organises community outings with the aim of catering for the diverse interests of residents. “It is vital for our residents’ wellbeing

Fruit fly front and centre at expo THE FACTS and figures on Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) and the devastating effect it can have on our region if left unchecked were front and centre at the Shepparton Billabong Garden Complex Expo over the weekend. The No Flies On Us message was loud and clear at the QFF education display, with several hundred information packs and showbags distributed over the two days. Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly coordinator, Ross Abberfield said members of the public were keen to learn more about the control of fruit fly in the
home garden. “We are thrilled to work with the Bi l labong G a rden tea m to en ha nce community awareness and knowledge of the pest. “There was strong interest in the project offer of free fruit tree removal which has now been extended to include urban, periurban and rural residential properties,” Mr Abberfield said.
Home gardeners are reminded now is the time to position traps in yards and recharge with new lures on existing traps. It is also important to check fruit that is ripening for infestation and if detected remove and destroy fruit. For more information on QFF control or the free fruit tree removal program, collect an information pack from councils customer service centre.

INVESTMENT NEEDED FOR HEALTHY CITY… From left, Committee for Greater Shepparton CEO, Sam Birrell, local resident and cancer survivor, Monica Harvey and Committee for Greater Shepparton chair, Rob Priestly discussing the report commissioned by the committee on the importance of funding needed for the stage two development of GV Health. Photo: Katelyn Morse.
Funding urgent for GV Health stage 2 continued from front page COMMITTEE for Greater Shepparton CEO, Sam Birrell said, “GV Health’s buildings are at the end of their life-cycle. “As positive as the stage 1 funding has been, a commitment to stage 2 is now critical to complete the redevelopment. Comparative analysis of current regional hospital asset values shows that of all major centres, Greater Shepparton has one of the oldest and run-down hospitals in the state. It is time for a new one. “Stage 1 is being built and that is fantastic, but we can’t wait around for five or so years with half a hospital, it doesn’t serve the people and it will cost taxpayers more in the long run. “GV Health has a large catchment of people who deserve adequate health care. They are not getting the health care they deserve due to the lack of infrastructure. “The Fair Value of Assets table as part of the assessment carried out shows what the hospital would be valued at today (GV Health
- $98,928,000) and reflects recent significant investments in other regional hospitals including the Bendigo Hospital which is valued at $946,801,000. The Shepparton hospital is old and no longer fit for purpose, hence its low asset value. It’s time to build a new one.” Local resident, Monica Harvey was diagnosed with breast cancer just over 12 months ago and was forced to drive to Bendigo to undergo radiotherapy treatment due to the lack of facilities in Shepparton. Monica said, “Being a mother of two young children, I was astounded that a town the size of Shepparton had no facilities for radiation therapy. “I was expected to travel to Bendigo daily (for 20 minutes of treatment) or stay in accommodation and be away from my family during this stressful time. The side effects of radiotherapy include fatigue, amongst others, so it was a safety risk for me to make this 2 way trip on a daily basis. “To go to Bendigo and see their facilities there you just think, why can’t we have that here?”

Local project receiving funding to help make connections between elderly and youth FUNDING through the Pick My Project initiative will soon be rolled out to successful projects, with nine chosen from the Goulburn region totalling $1,480,006, but just one in Greater Shepparton. The ‘I Wish I’d Asked’ project, which was submitted by the Rotary Club of Shepparton South Inc. received 299 votes and will be allocated $62,753. Brainchild of Melbournians, Eva Gruen and Danny Finley, the project aims to reduce the high levels of loneliness and depression experienced amongst seniors and the young through the organising of various activities throughout the year that brings youth and seniors together and will run with the backing of schools, youth organisations, aged care facilities and rotary clubs. I Wish I’d Asked will provide skill sharing opportunities and connection through the many fun activities such as music, gardening, knitting, digital art and craft activities, as well as computer and phone skills, all the while focusing on conversation. Ongoing conversations will be filmed and will be available online for all to see and enjoy. Rotary Club of Shepparton South Inc. president, David Earle said, “It’s exciting that our project was picked. We think the project is just fantastic. “We kickstarted the project in December last year and we have already made relationships with several schools and youth organisations across the region including Bourchier Street Primary School, Notre Dame College and Berry Street. “Ultimately we’d like to see it in the school curriculum across the state. “Up to 70 percent of senior people suffer from loneliness and research tells us one in three young adults have no connection with an elderly adult, so by forming meaningful relationships, participants will feel happier, more secure, content and confident.”

H Game Changers Australia changing the game S for 30 young sports players in Shepparton GAME Changers Australia’s flagship program for 30 young local sports players is launching in Shepparton this October. Game Changers Australia (GCA) is an organisation that exists to upskill young sports players to deal with life’s challenges and to become leaders in their community. The flagship Shepparton program is a key part of GCA’s broader vision to use sport to impact the lives of young people in rural and regional Victoria by empowering them to be healthy, confident and resilient. Placements for the program are open to 30 young people (aged 14-17) and positions are expected to fill fast.
The Shepparton program has already received sponsorship and support from the likes of AFL legend, Ron Barassi. Since 2012, GCA has worked with over 2,800 young people and 280 sports clubs across Victoria including in the Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland and Warrnambool. The organisation has partnered with the likes of Essendon Football Club, the Victorian State Government and Bendigo Bank. A 15 year old cricket player from a current program said, “It has made me realise that I can do anything I set my mind to. It has made me believe in my abilities to do great things in sport.”
The Shepparton Sports Leadership program will start with a camp in January, a 10 week mentoring program, a community event and a graduation finishing up in April. Each component is designed to bring out the best and ignite the potential of young people. Nominations are open from October until the program is full. CEO, Natalie Klenner said, “Young people in rural and regional Australia often do not receive the same opportunities as young people in the big cities. That’s why our focus at Game Changers is on providing them with transformational leadership opportunities and
empowering them to be the person they want to be for themselves and their community.” So far local football, basketball and cricket associations have shown interest in the program for their members. For those interested in finding out more, or wanting to nominate a young person to get involved, visit www.game-changers.life to find out how up or email CEO, Natalie at nat. klenner@game-changers.life. If you’re a local business or community member, get in touch to find out what opportunities exist for you to get involved as well.
Shooting sports clubs in Shepparton on target for environmental funding GREATER Shepparton shooting sports community celebrated last week, after securing funding to develop an environmental management plan for their facilities. Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp announced that three Shepparton clubs were amongst the 18 across the state to benefit from the third round of the Andrews Labor Government’s Shooting Sports Facilities Program. The successful recipients include the Shepparton Branch of Sporting Shooters
Association Australia (SSAA), which will receive $42,276 in funding for improved modifications of their shotgun range, the Cosgrove Gun Club will receive $45,000 in funding for a facilities upgrade and the Shepparton Field & Game will receive $86,000 in funding for an upgrade of their on-site storage. Potential contamination of current and former shooting ranges by lead and other materials is a challenge for the shooting sector. It is vital that clubs consider the risk
posed to the public health of neighbouring communities and the general public. Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp said, “Our investment in the Shooting Sports Facilities Program is helping ensure the long term future of the sport, and helping our shooters hone their skills with modern safe facilities. “We’re supporting the shooting community to reduce potential health and environmental risks through collaboration with clubs, associations and peak bodies.
“I congratulate the successful clubs on securing this funding and look forward to seeing their projects progress.”
