Florist takes out top Victorian and Tasmanian award

By David Lee HAVING spent 38 years in business, Renato’s Florist was honoured for its service and quality for the first time by Interflora, taking out the top spot in the Interflora Pursuit of Excellence Retail Awards.

Going up against 70 other nominees across Victoria and Tasmania, Renato’s Florist was judged in secret where mystery shoppers placed floral orders that were then assessed by judges on freshness and similarity to the images on the Interflora website.

Liberal Nationals to deliver flood levee for Numurkah

A N E L EC T E D Liberal Nationals Government will help protect Numurkah homes, businesses and community buildings against future flooding events, pledging to provide more than $5.6M towards the construction of a permanent flood levee.

Devastating floods in 2012 inundated the town, including 77 homes, the local hospital and aged care facility and caravan park.

T he com munit y has foug ht for a permanent levee to be built in town to protect against future flood events, appointing the Numurkah Flood Action Group to advocate on its behalf.

Shadow Minister for Water, Steph Ryan said, “Numurkah has seen many devastating floods over the years – this levee will make

sure that doesn’t happen again,” Ms Ryan said.

“The Numurkah community has pushed for action so that people don’t again endure the loss of their homes and businesses.

“We believe in backing projects the community has identified as a priority and that’s why we’ll help build a permanent flood levee in Numurkah.”

The $5.6M grant to Moira Shire Council will go towards delivering the preferred Option A from the Numurkah floodplain management study.

It will see a system of permanent levees built north and south of Broken Creek, with contributions expected from the Federal Government, and Moira Shire Council and landholders.

“A permanent flood levee is the number one priority for Numurkah, so I’m proud to be announcing we’ll help deliver it,” Mr Schwarz said.

“Having lived in this district for the past 25 years and supported the work of the Numurkah Flood Action Group, I know how important this levee is. We need to make sure people’s homes and businesses are safe.”

Liberal Candidate for Shepparton, Cheryl Hammer said the levee would give local people peace of mind.

“This grant will help bring the work of the Numurkah Flood Action Group and the community to reality,” Ms Hammer said.

“More needs to be done to safeguard Numurkah against flooding and that’s what this levee will do.”

Shepparton promoted as motoring hub on Melbourne stage

By David Lee SHEPPARTON was promoted as the motoring hub of Victoria at the weekend when Greater Shepparton City Council spruiked the region at the largest motoring event in Victoria, the Motorclassica in Melbourne.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Economic Development, Anthony Nicolaci said, “Going to the Motorclassica was all about profiling the region as a place for motoring.

“Council in partnership with Shepparton Motor Museum and Mitchell Shire had a stand promoting the heart of Victoria.

Throughout the weekend the event gets about 20,000 people come through, so it provided a good opportunity to promote Shepparton as a great place to visit and entice people to check out the Shepparton Motor Museum and what the region has to offer.

“People were really impressed with the facilities we have catering to motoring enthusiasts here. We had some car clubs express interest in bringing their events and car clubs to Shepparton.

“We also had apples from Rocky Varapodio Orchards, which allowed us to showcase our fresh local produce. We also took along a Careful Cobber Car to give people a taste of our Shepparton Motor Museum.”

Maude Street Mall redevelopment enters next phase AT THE September ordinary council meeting Greater Shepparton City Council resolved to adopt Option Four – A Shared Streetscape as the preferred conceptual design for a redevelopment of the Maude Street Mall.

Council also resolved to progress this conceptual design to a detailed design phase and undertake a business case on the adopted option.

Work on this phase of the project is underway and officers are in the process of mapping out timelines and will commence the development of briefs and documentation to take the detailed design and business case work to public tender in accordance with council’s procurement policy.

A council spokesperson said, “Timelines for the ultimate construction of any redevelopment of the mall are dependent on a

number of factors including the funding of the project which will be reliant on both Federal and State Government’s support and also the staging of the construction process.

“Council is actively advocating for funding for this project and will continue to undertake this advocacy as the project progresses.

“The detailed design and business case work will explore how the project can be staged to minimise the project’s financial impact as well as disruptions to services, infrastructure and surrounding businesses.

“Option Four sees one-way traffic introduced between Fryers and Stewart Street, the development of high quality public open space as well as the development of additional off-street car parking in the southern section of the mall accessed via High Street.”

New business grants approved G R E AT E R S h e p p a r t o n C i t y C o u n c i l a d o p t e d t h e recommendation of the Grant Assessment Panel to fund two projects including Schnitz Shepparton and Nedal Kebabs to the total value of $13,200 through the New Business Grants at the October ordinary council meeting.

Council’s New Business Grant provides funding for infrastructure or initiatives that support the establishment of new businesses in Greater Shepparton.

Council received and assessed two applications. Both applicants have applied for funding for works associated with establishing restaurants within the Shepparton CBD. In 2017 Council resolved to establish the New Business Grant as an initiative to assist in the establishment of new businesses within the municipality. The grant aims to act as an incentive for businesses to invest within the Greater Shepparton region and create jobs.

Funding is available to support investment in property or infrastructure improvements that are directly linked to the establishment of a new business. Applications will be received throughout the year and assessed in three rounds. Applicants are required to match funding provided through the grant and demonstrate the suitability and viability of their business as part of their application.

Election pledge to provide $2M for Day Options facility upgrade A CONTRIBUTION of $2M toward the redevelopment of ConnectGV’s Day Options facility has been pledged by the Liberal Nationals Government if they are elected in November.

The redevelopment of the Social Enterprise training and Day Options facility at ConnectGV’s Bowenhall Street campus will provide ConnectGV with a purpose-built facility that will allow them to deliver quality services to their clients and meet the future growth in the Shepparton electorate and surrounding districts.

The current building, which was open in 1968 has major structural defects and is unfit for clients and staff in its current

condition.

Shadow Minister for Disability, Tim Bull said, “After 64 years offering support to people with a disability in the Goulburn Valley, the building ConnectGV operates from is old and rundown.

“ConnectGV will be better equipped to meet the needs of local people with a disability in a new state-of-the-art facility to be funded by a Liberal Nationals Government.”

LET’S STAY INDEPENDENT

Dear Editor, On almost any of my many trips to Melbourne, friends and associates will ask ‘what’s going on back home?’

Over the last few years the conversations have changed from drug busts, gruesome murders, an ICE and obesity epidemic and economic woes to much more positive topics.

A new regional court complex, the hospital expansion, planned transport and art museums, new infrastructure to bring better more frequent rail services and a funding to transform education and provide greater opportunity.

Shepparton is buzzing and whilst it would be drawing a long bow to suggest it’s all due to having an independent member in Spring Street and a proactive Committee

for Greater Shepparton, the timing isn’t just coincidence either.

The rest of Victoria and Australia is awakening to the benefits of having independent politicians, particularly when the numbers in parliament are tight.

We are the envy of many other electorates, some of which are trying to do the same come November.

Sheed launches campaign to keep Shepparton district independent FORMALLY launching her campaign to retain the seat of Shepparton district in the Victorian Parliament for a second term, Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed has outlined her significant achievements and vision for the future.

“For almost 50 years we were represented by one of the major political parties and were one of the safest conservative seats in the state. We suffered decades of neglect and fell so far behind not only Melbourne, but the other major regional centres,” Ms Sheed said.

“Four years ago our community stood up and said no more. Being proudly independent has delivered in spades for Shepparton district, we have achieved more than $600M in critical infrastructure funding for health, education, rail and road projects. “$170M to redevelop GV Health, $21. 5 M to t ra n sfor m e du c at ion a l opportunities for our young people and a record $356M to upgrade the Shepparton train line. This work is underway and will bring our line into the modern era and make way for our nine VLocity return services a day from 2021.

“These projects are a reality, not a political promise, and they’re the essential building blocks for a thriving region where opportunity isn’t limited by the postcode you live in.”

Ms Sheed said while it was pleasing to see Shepparton District finally receiving the attention it had needed for so long, there was so much more to achieve.

community has come in such a short amount of time; we are now firmly on the political map,” Ms Sheed said.

“Momentum is building but there is a lot more to do to be the very best city and region we can be.”

Ms Sheed said she was campaigning for a second term to not only see the delivery of projects already underway, but also to achieve even more for the Shepparton district.

“We need stage two funding to see our hospital completed with an integrated cancer centre so people can be treated closer to home.

“We need funding to complete the Shepparton Education Plan, for the Neighbourhood Schools Project and for a residential mother-baby unit to help families give their children the best possible start to life.

“We’ve started planning and early works for the Shepparton bypass, but we need funding for the first stage to deliver a second river crossing and improve the amenity and safety of our towns.

Frustrating theft leaving GMW out of pocket GOULBURN-MURRAY Water (GMW) has had six steel gates stolen from access points to irrigation channels in the northwest of the Murray Valley Irrigation District, which has forced the organization to pass on the costs associated with repairs on to irrigation customers.

The gates, attached to wooden fencing to keep livestock and the public away from plastic-lined channels, were stolen sometime on Monday or Tuesday, October 15 and 16, from a site along Morris Road, Yalca.

The channel in question is located just south of the Murray Valley Highway, near the intersection of Morris Road and WaaiaBearii Road.

The incident followed the theft of four gates over the July 14-15 weekend also on Morris Road. Last year, GMW had to replace stolen gates along Chapel Road and Healy Road, Cobram.

Customer Service Manager Murray Valley, Brendan Brooks said, “The gates are there to ensure access to irrigation channels is restricted to authorised GMW staff or contractors.

“If stock gets access along the channel they may have difficulty getting out. Plasticlined channels also pose a drowning risk to animals and people of course.”

Tools, including bolt-cutters, were used in the thefts. Mr Brooks said the cost of each gate, at about $150, would ultimately be passed on to irrigation customers.

“It’s really the petty nature of the crimes that is so frustrating and disappointing,” Mr Brooks said.

“Someone is out there blatantly stealing these gates just to save a few dollars on their own property, but it is costing farmers and creating a real risk for the wider community.”

Spoilt for choice with summer activities H LOCALS are encouraged to get Active for Life this summer, with an enormous array of activities available during the warmer months.

Running from October 2018 until April 2019 as part of the Activities in the Park program, Active for Life offers weekly sports, health and wellbeing activities.

Stretch yourself with strength training or tai chi and get active with sporting activities like table tennis, badminton and self-defence.

The Active for Life sessions that fall under the Activities in the Park program run for free at the Shepparton Stadium, as a sort of taste test for participants. On other occasions there is a small fee involved.

Funding assists catering connections SOUTH Shepparton Community Centre committee and staff were thrilled to receive $5,000 funding from the Freemasons Foundation Victoria Benevolent Fund.

Staff are busy putting the funding to good use, increasing programs delivered at the centre.

South Shepparton Community Centre manager, Dawn Taylor said, “The Healthy Connections program is supported by the funding and offers participants two hours of interesting health and lifestyle information, presenting a range of topics delivered by experienced guest speakers.

with instructions for participants to learn how to make each dish at home. Group members learn how to develop a menu that caters for people with special dietary requirements and to sample food they have never tasted before.

Regional migrant push positive for the Goulburn Valley The Adviser sat down with Ethnic Council of Shepparton manager, Chris Hazelman on the matter, who said that there could be some great benefits for the Greater Shepparton region among others.

Chris said, “Shepparton’s history has never seen any issues with attracting migrants as we have always had opportunities here.

“We’ve only had two relatively minor government programs sending people to Shepparton. There has been a Congolese pilot project run by the Federal Government, which was an initiative that saw 13 families settled over an 18 month period in Shepparton and in 2018-2019 the Federal Government is

looking at settling 200 Syrians in Shepparton.

“The only other scheme is the south pacific short term visa scheme where people are contracted to come in from south pacific islands on a short term visa specifically to pick fruit and some have come to the Goulburn Valley for that.

“This regional migrant push may look positive on the one hand and in broad terms it will be, particularly for a place like Shepparton where there is capacity and employment opportunities, but that might not be a case for all regional areas. There needs to be a skill shortage where the migrant’s skills can be matched to those areas for this to work.

“The seasonal employment opportunities in Shepparton have

been the attraction to the area for migrants for many years.

“95 percent of people who have come to Shepparton have come through secondary migration. They’ve lived elsewhere and have heard about Shepparton and the opportunities and so they move here.

“Places like Shepparton, Mildura, Griffith or anywhere with intensive agriculture are always going to be the target location for something like this. I am already hearing government mentioning Shepparton because of a labour shortage issue around harvest time.

“Employment is a massive part of successful settlement and makes a huge amount of difference so this is a positive step.”

Draft Princess Park plan released THE Draft Princess Park Future Directions Plan and the Landscape Masterplan has been released for public exhibition and is open for comment for 28 days, concluding on November 14.

The Draft Princess Park Future Directions Plan and Landscape Masterplan have been developed to provide a vision for the area and its facilities which supports and guides decisions on the future use, development, management and maintenance of the area.

Consultation has taken place with key stakeholders in developing the Draft Future Directions Plan and Landscape Masterplan.

The stakeholders consulted have included the Princess Park user groups, council officers, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and peak sporting associations.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure, Phil Hoare said, “The draft plan is now being provided to the broader community for review and feedback. Council encourages residents to review the draft documents and provide feedback. Those who wish to do so can find the survey on council’s website and hard copies are available on display at council’s Welsford Street office. Feedback is welcomed.”

Father and son race to double win

By David Lee THERE is something special about hearing that a father and son have both come away as winners from a motocross event, especially when it is the son’s first championship win and that’s exactly what local Toolamba residents, Scott Briant and 6-year-old son, Carter have done.

At the recent inaugural 2018 Interclub Series, Scott and Carter both faired well, each winning their category. The races took place at tracks in Myrtleford, Albury, Winton and Cobram with Carter taking out the 50cc category and Scott taking the title for the VETS category.

Scott said, “Carter has been riding since he was 18 months old.

“He was a fair way in front through the races. It was a bit scary to watch actually.

“I was very proud of him. I knew he would do well.

“He did so well that Cleaves Garden Supplies have said they will be his sponsor for next year, which is amazing.

“We’d like to thank AJ’s Motorcycles, Southern Rod & Custom and Tunetech Suspension for their help with maintenance and parts.

“Carter’s next race will be in Cobram this weekend. There will be three races in one day and if he wins that he will take the Cobram Club Champs title.”

Carter said, “I was very happy to win. I was going very fast.

“It was lots of fun and I love the jumps the most.”
