KEEP SHEPPARTON DISTRICT
PROUDLY INDEPENDENT
For almost 50 years, Shepparton District was represented by one of the major political parties and was one of the safest seats in the state. We suffered decades of neglect and fell so far behind other regional centres. Four years ago we stood up and said “no more”. We made Shepparton District an independent and marginal electorate, and it has delivered in spades with more than $660 million in critical infrastructure funding for health, education, rail and road projects. These projects are a reality, not a political promise, and they’re the essential building blocks for a truly thriving region. It is incredible to see how far our community has come in such a short period of time – we are now firmly on the political map and there is a strong sense of optimism about our future. The Liberal and National parties are clamouring to win this seat with promises and pledges, but they delivered little for our community when they were in Government between 2010 and 2014 and we cannot risk being forgotten again. We deserve better and we’re now achieving what we needed for so long. Momentum is building, but there is much more to achieve and I urge you to stand with me this November and keep Shepparton District proudly independent. ROB KNIGHT TOOLAMBA “In the regions we have to compete with the needs of the city. I think that without question standing as an independent member has brought the Shepparton District into the focus of the government and brought the funding we have needed. With an independent we are able to gain the attention of Spring Street in a way we have not been able to before. Suzanna is able to work with both sides regardless of who is in power.”
Many people ask Peter and I why we embarked on this political journey at this stage of our lives. The answer is a simple one – we wanted to make – and now keep – the Shepparton District a marginal seat, attract the attention of Government and achieve the real outcomes that we had missed out on for so long. Like many in our community, we bemoaned the fact that regional cities like Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong and the Latrobe Valley were getting so much more investment than we were here in one of the safest seats in the state.
DENNIS ‘PATTO’ PATTERSON MOOROOPNA
While we have seen amazing innovation and growth in some areas within our region through industry, agriculture and horticulture, we have also seen greater discrepancies between those who have and those who have not.
“I like many others in this area had always voted conservative and no doubt at some stage in the future I will again . . We have had some wonderful people represent us over the years, but they had little success in attracting the funding we needed. I believe timing is everything in politics and the timing now is right for a good quality independent in Shepparton and that is what we have with Suzanna.”
We could not simply sit back and accept the fact that our health and educational outcomes were less than for those who live in the major cities. Both Peter and I have roots in the country – I grew up on a farm in Jerilderie and Peter’s family is from Colbinabbin. We sometimes say there must be a genetic component to wanting to live in rural Australia because so many people who are born and bred in the country and go away, often come back.
KEVIN ‘GUNNA’ RYAN TATURA
We have made a long-term commitment to the Shepparton District region, raising our families and pursuing our careers, Peter as a community paediatrician and I in the law – and now politics.
“You just have to look at all the development that is going on, hundreds of millions of dollars in the region. I stood with Suzanna last time and I stand with her again. I believe Suzanna has worked very hard to achieve change for the district. Why would you go back?”
We know there is so much opportunity in regional areas but we have to fight for it. I am so pleased with what our Shepparton District community has been able to achieve during the course of the past four years and I feel proud to have had the opportunity to be your voice in the Victorian State Parliament.
ANDREW PRENTICE SHEPPARTON
I can assure you I have always thought long and hard and consulted with the community before making decisions that affect our electorate. That is how I propose to continue should I be re-elected this November and I ask you to stand with me to achieve even more for the Shepparton District.
“Suzanna is a proven performer, her detailed knowledge and understanding of the issues that affect the electorate is outstanding. She has quickly established herself as a strong voice for Shepparton in Parliament. I believe with the experience she has gained over the last four years she will achieve more in this next term.
Suzanna Sheed MP
I have lived in Shepparton all my life and not for decades have I felt so optimistic about our future.”
JENNIFER BROADBENT SHEPPARTON “Suzanna is a champion for our community and as an independent MP has put us on the political map. State and Federal governments are now taking notice. Imagine what the next four years can achieve.”
ACHIEVEMENTS In 2014 I stood for election to turn around the long-term neglect of our health, education and transport services. Since then we have achieved more than $660 million of investment in projects – not promises – including: $356M to upgrade the Shepparton Train Line to allow for nine VLocity services a day by 2021 $170M for Stage 1 of Goulburn Valley Health’s redevelopment $21.5M for Shepparton District Education $10M to start planning for the Shepparton Bypass Authorised by Peter Eastaugh, 77 Numurkah Road, Shepparton 3630

Community digs deep for palliative care By David Lee A NUMBER of local businesses have come together to bring a bit of life to the outdoors and family room of GV Health’s palliative care unit, following a donation made by a local resident, whose wife was taken care of by the nurses in the unit. Designed by SPIIR E , the therapeutic garden will help to bring a little light into the lives of families in the unit during an otherwise difficult time and includes a shade sail, tree, raised planter box, water feature and bench seats. As part of the donation, the family room that adjoins the new garden also received a refurbishment.
A competition was conducted by local landscaping business SPIIRE and a wonderful proposed garden design was chosen that is a combination of the designs of two landscape architects, Martina Mohenska and Adam Gardner. Martina and Adam said, “It was really exciting to have had the ability to design something like this and be involved in delivering the project and the best part is it is all for a good cause.” SPIIRE business unit manager, Jeramy Blight said, “SPIIRE is looking to become more engaged with the community and we are always looking for local projects like this one. We heard about it and it aligns with the values of our company so it resonated with us. “We’d l i ke to t ha n k t he fol low i ng businesses for their support in the project; T he Apprent icesh ip Fac tor y, A nd rew Beks Sprinklers and Landscaping, Norvec Electrical, Kensington Gardens residence workshop, Furphy Foundry, Adornatos Sand and Gravel Supplies, Michel Signs, Surdex

His wife was a keen gardener and in order to preserve her memory, the donor resolved to donate the funds needed to create the palliative care garden. “The donor’s intention was that by creating a peaceful garden the patients and families could spend private time in a tranquil and peaceful setting.” The garden will be open from November 10.

NEWS
Get to know your candidates WITH the election just around the corner, The Adviser caught up with the candidates and asked them a list of questions to find out why the community should elect them.
Liberal Candidate for Shepparton, Cheryl Hammer WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU COULD BRING TO THE REGION IF ELECTED? My connection to the community is what has motivated me to stand as the next Member for Shepparton. I am known for my energy, enthusiasm and advocacy for our region. I am an award winning small business owner, a farmer, a mother and my work in the not-forprofit and philanthropy sectors has led to many valuable relationships with grassroots community where I believe I can make a real difference. I have connections with youth groups, the business and farming sector who I often represent on committees and boards; social welfare groups where I support efforts to improve disadvantage, homelessness, food insecurity and mental health. I choose to live here, I invest here through my small business and family farm and I have raised my boys here. I can relate to who makes up our electorate and my proven record at standing up for what I believe in and being able to affect change means I can start work immediately if I was to be elected. WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN POINTS THAT YOU WOULD FOCUS ON IF ELECTED? I would focus on the issues the people in this electorate are concerned about. They talk to me about are our skyrocketing cost of living including our energy bills, crime and safety and the need for the laws to reflect the expectations of the community; our roads are in desperate need of attention; Stage 2 of GV Health is a top priority and of course protecting our water for our farmers. Supporting access to sport and quality sporting
facilities and growing our tourism offering to attract more visitors to our region in a bid to grow jobs and a healthier economy is also on my agenda. I want to be the strong voice to deliver the Liberal Party’s plan to grow the whole of Victoria, not just Melbourne, which presents huge opportunity for the Shepparton electorate. We need the right growth, at the right time in the right place and I support Matthew Guy’s plan to decentralise our jobs, our services and our people. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE MAIN ISSUES FACING THE AREA RIGHT NOW? Water security underpins so much of what our future looks like, as we are still very much reliant on our agricultural and horticultural industries for local production, jobs and cash flow into our local economy. If farmers and producers are not prospering, the rest of our city and surrounding towns feel the effects. Job creation, pa r ticu la rly f u ll-ti me employment, has been neglected and we need to do more to support and encourage small to medium business, the backbone of our country, to offer secure work. On the other hand, we have a skills shortage in a number of areas such as aged care, doctors and other specialists that we need to address. Mental health and the increasing use of drugs is a major concern for residents, along with crime associated with drug activity. Addressing the cost of living including the delivery of affordable energy for both householders and the business community will be very important for our region.
I would be a member in a major party room who can make commitments to our region and influence policy and funding. I know the electorate very well due to my business background and my many years as a volunteer. I will bring local knowledge and understanding to the role immediately. I enjoy a strong relationship with decisionmakers in local and state government and advocacy groups from Committee for Greater Shepparton and Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry. I believe much of my work for the community over the past 20 years has led me to the decision to put myself forward as the Member for Shepparton. My distinctive set of skills and lived experience as a local will set me apart
WHAT IS YOUR FUTURE VISION FOR THE REGION? Our region will be the leader in our exciting plan to decentralise our jobs, our services and our people. We will embrace the opportunity to attract investment, both government and commercial, to build a strong local economy where young people can graduate from their studies into work; and skilled professionals and other workers choose to move here for the work/ life balance we offer. Our future region will be a safe, affordable place for our young families and our senior citizens to live with access to quality public transport and health services. We need to strengthen all of Victoria’s economy, not just Melbourne, and I will be our voice in parliament to see that happen. WHAT IS YOUR POINT OF DIFFERENCE COMPARED TO OTHER CANDIDATES? I have a proven record in working and fighting for a better now, and a better future, in the region. I enjoy a reputation as an honest and reliable member of the community who is willing to work hard to make a difference.

More plasma donors needed in Shepparton SHEPPARTON residents are being called on to help meet the growing demand for plasma by giving a much needed plasma donation. The Shepparton Blood Donor Centre needs 80 people to donate plasma in the next three weeks to help thousands of Australians enjoy an improved quality of life. Plasma can be used in 18 different lifegiving ways, and with demand for this powerful component of blood growing rapidly every year, donations are always needed. Blood Service spokesperson, Shae Smith said, “Each donation helps treat people
suffering serious burns or cancer, protects people with brain or blood disorders, and protects kids against chicken pox.” Ms Smith said donating plasma is a lot like giving blood. “Donating plasma is simple. Just sit back and relax on a comfy couch for 45 minutes while you donate,” Ms Smith said. “The whole appointment takes 1.5 hours, and you can donate as often as every two weeks.” Continuous improvements in the detection of some health conditions, an ageing
population and the high standard of care in Australia are thought to be behind Australia’s rapid growth in plasma demand. “Plasma is a versatile part of your blood, so you can really unlock your blood’s full potential by giving a plasma donation,” Ms Smith said. “Giving plasma feels good because with every donation, you’ve got the chance to give Australians exactly what they need.” To make an appointment or learn more about donating plasma, call 13 14 95 or visit donateblood.com.au

By Ash Beks THERE’S an exciting ambience; I can feel it bouncing off the exposed brick walls. Everything has a warm, shiny feel and the gorgeous wooden tables glow. The aroma of coffee and bread fills the air and the staff are beaming with wide-eyed enthusiasm. Welcome to the new Monichino Café & Wine Bar; an inspiring spot for food, wine and coffee in Shepparton. Local chefs, Carlie Monichino and Ryan Gibson are bringing their uniquely European approach to food to Shepparton. It’s a point of difference that Monichino Café & Wine Bar prides itself on and they have created a relaxed, food-and-drink-all-day attitude. Specialising in share boards and small plates, Carlie and Ryan want to emphasise that eating should be a memorable and shared experience, something life-affirming to enjoy with company. The menu also has bigger meals for those unwilling to share and their chicken burger is already hugely popular, and to be honest, it sounds amazing. Carlie explains that the new restaurant is wholly indebted to her family, particularly her Nonno, renowned local winemaker, Carlo Monichino. Carlo started Monichino Wines at his property in Katunga back in 1962 and the business remains proudly family-owned to this day. Old photos of Carlo Monichino adorn the walls of the new restaurant and helps give the space its warm, homely feel. Further, Carlie’s father, Phillip Monichino deserves a mention for his relentless assistance in renovating the building. His handy carpentry brings so much flavour and jazz to the café. Food and drink flows through the blood of the Monichino family like a fine red wine and this new venture carries on a long-lasting legacy left by local vigneron. This passionate energy has been passed down for generations and you can see the excitement in Carlie and Ryan’s eyes when they speak of their dream. “All of our food is house-baked with love and we just want to take food back to basics,” Carlie said. “We believe simplest and freshest is best and we treat our produce with respect. “Everything on the menu, besides alcohol, is available for takeaway. Otherwise, you can just laze the day away with one of our share boards.” The new Monichino Café & Wine Bar is open for breakfast and lunch Monday to Saturday and for dinner Thursday to Saturday. For more information, visit the restaurant at 247 Wyndham Street or give the team a call on 5858 4834.

Fire restrictions now in place THE Fire Danger Period has now officially begun with the Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for southern Australia suggesting the fire season in Victoria will start earlier than usual and be more active than normal due to warmer and drier conditions. CFA District 22 operations manager, Tony Owen said, “Indeed, parts of Victoria have already experienced grass and bushfires and when the Fire Danger Period was introduced in parts of Gippsland on September 10, it was the
earliest date on record. “Low winter rainfall across the north east means the grass and bush are dry and the fire potential is further increased by Bureau of Meteorology forecasts that the next three months will be drier and warmer than average. “Any rainfall we do experience in spring will produce growth, which could very easily become a high fuel load throughout the summer season if not properly managed. “Reducing fuel loads will ensure that if a fire
does break out, it has less chance of taking hold or spreading. “While CFA and its partner agencies Parks Victoria, Forest Fire Management, DELWP and Emergency Management Victoria are doing everything we can to prepare for the bushfire season, we look to the community to use common sense and take responsibility for preventing fires. “People need to be aware that if using fire to clean up around their properties they need
to register these on 1800 668 511. So far this year, out-of-control burn-offs and unregistered burn-offs have already caused unnecessary callouts for brigades. Some of these have resulted in prosecutions. “You should not burn off when winds are high or high winds are forecast – not only on the day of your burn but for the days afterwards. “For information about burn-off restrictions specific to your area, consult your local council. “Expect any fire you start to be fully investigated by CFA and Victoria Police.” More information can be found at www. c f a .v i c . gov. au / wa r n i n g s - r e s t r i c t io n s / restrictions-during-the-fire-danger-period/

Optimum advice for Parkinson’s patients THE annual Parkinson’s Disease Seminar assists GV Health professionals, patients and their carers in receiving world-class information on how best to manage the illness. Presented on behalf of the Goulburn Valley Movement Disorder Service, the fourth seminar will be held at GV Hotel on Friday, November 2. Divisional clinical director of medicine, Dr Arup Bhattacharya and movement disorder nurse, Sheree Ambrosini have been working extremely hard with GV Health to bring leading and specialised information to the Goulburn Valley. Each year, the seminar attracts around 300 attendees and every year there’s a different focus. This year’s event is titled ‘Parkinson’s – Medications and Beyond.’
Regarding this year’s seminar, Dr Bhattacharya said, “Our event will focus on lifestyle changes, exercise and healthy habits and a holistic approach, rather than exclusively medical management, with speeches from key national and international professionals. “Just because the Goulburn Valley is a regional hub, doesn’t mean that we deserve any less. “It gives validation that what we offer here at GV Health is best practice and inspires us to continue to do our best for our patients.” The event is free for patients and their carers and is a great opportunity for health professionals to learn more about Parkinson’s Disease. KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING Dear Editor, The recent Wentworth by-election result has reminded me how important each and every one of our votes is in the coming state election on November 24. As a resident of this area for the past 32 years I had watched in disappointment as a series of previous sitting members sit idly and watched money and resources being deployed in surrounding marginal seats without so much as a whimper. Professionally, in the past four years, I have found a member who is not afraid to ask questions and learn about what really goes on in this great region, and who is courageous enough to take on business’s challenges that have led to our finally

being given an opportunity to be heard in Spring Street. Suzanna Sheed has helped bring new life and a genuine feeling of positivity to this region that I have not felt before. Significant investment, the Goulburn Valley at the forefront of Government thinking and planning and an independent memb er who work s t i rele s sly a nd relentlessly for her constituents. We must keep this momentum going and allow Suzanna Sheed to continue her great work for the people and businesses of the Goulburn Valley and not revert to the dark days of a safe seat badly neglected by the major political parties. Fond farewell after almost four decades H
S John and Agata step down as owners after 39 years WHILE carrying out the interview many customers came up to express their sadness and gratitude to John and Agata for their many years of service, with one telling Agata she was growling at John for making the decision to step down and another sharing fond memories of coming in to the store for many years from a young age with her grandmother and wishing them luck for the future. John and Agata moved to Shepparton in September of 1979 and in just an eight month period had the big three; became part owners of a business, bought a house and welcomed their first child into the world. After having owned the pharmacy with business partner, Darcy Brennan, John and Agata made the decision to buy the business outright in 1982 as the pair saw the business was increasing and saw it as an opportunity to help see it grow, which it did. John and Agata said, “Darcy was instrumental in helping get us in the pharmacy business and he was nice enough to let us buy the business outright, which we are forever grateful for. “We have multigenerational customers who have been coming to us since we opened and many people have fond memories from our time with them throughout the years. “Talking with people as they have come in after we made the announcement we were stepping back as owners has made us realise that when you look back in reflection, there are so many people who have connections with us, some sharing birthdays with us and our children, some working at Coles & Coy Ltd that was next door to us and even one woman who said she remembered meeting me (Agata) for the first time when she went to conduct hygiene and make up lessons at Wanganui Park Secondary College. We didn’t realise the impact we’ve had on people and the connections we’ve made. “The catalyst for us stepping down has been family. Family has and always will be very important to us. “We are pleased to be able to hand over the reigns to Melvin Deo and his wife,
FAREWELL AND GOOD LUCK… John and Agata Anderson are hanging up their hats and have announced they are no longer the owners of John Anderson Pharmacy. Photo: Katelyn Morse.
Archana and I (John) will be still around for a while through the transition. Melvin is a caring and professional pharmacist and we related to him very quickly. “We’ve seen some interesting and big changes over the years. Pharmacy now is much more connected with aged care in that it helps people to manage their medication. Technology and access to education as well as streamlining how dispensing is done has evolved quickly over the last 10 years alone, so that has been interesting. Contraception and women’s hygiene products were only sold in pharmacies when we first started and weren’t found on supermarket shelves, and they had to be wrapped in brown paper as many people were often embarrassed to be seen purchasing them. We are also seeing more men coming in to purchase grooming products and it’s great to see them looking after their own health nowadays. “We’d like to thank our loyal customers for becoming a part of our family and to our staff who have been wonderful. We have been lucky to have such a stability in our staff and we are grateful to them for helping us grow the business to where it is today.”

THE POWER OF ELECTRIC… Audi Australia product planning director, Shawn Ticehurst with a prototype of the new Audi e-tron which was showcased in Euroa last week during a special unveiling of the ultra-rapid Chargefox network. Photos: David Lee.
The car of the future By David Lee WITH the rise of electric cars happening quite quickly, it’s no surprise that car manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon. Audi is one such car manufacturer who showcased a prototype of its e-tron electric car in Euroa last week, ahead of the car’s release in Australia next year. The e-tron is being toted as the fastest charging electric car in the world with a battery that can charge up to 80 percent in 30 minutes. It has two electric engines allowing for all wheel drive capabilities and is a full
five seat SUV with luggage capacity, is fitted with the latest navigation and connectivity technology and more importantly can go from 0 to 100km/h in under six seconds. Audi Australia product planning director, Shawn Ticehurst said, “With a range of over 400km and a charging capacity of 150kW, the all-new Audi e-tron has a faster charging capacity than any current electric vehicle. It’s dependant on fast-charging infrastructure like the Chargefox network, and so we are pleased to be one of the network’s founding partners. Its success will be critical to our customers’
enjoyment of the all-new Audi e-tron when it arrives in the second half of 2019.” The e-tron was showcased at a special unveiling of the ultra-rapid Chargefox network in Euroa last week, which is the world’s first solar battery storage and 350kW charging combination. Darryl Twitt Motors marketing manager, Pike Peters said, “Shepparton’s Audi centre will also soon be home to a charging station for electric cars, which is something that we are looking forward to being able to provide the community.”

SAVING A TEMPLE… Abu Simbel is a massive temple complex that was saved from the waters of the Aswan Dam by moving it to higher ground.
Egypt TOURING THE TEMPLES… Ashley and Emily at the Philae Temple at the Aswan Dam.
IT ALL came about by chance for two young women, Ashley Waddington and Emily Birchall who originally wanted to go to Asia but the itinerary did not fit in with the leave. So Ashley had always wanted to see the pyramids and Emily wanted to go on safari, so they did both. Their first stop was Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Both Ashley and Emily could not get over the traffic. Cars by the thousands and they were everywhere. Emily says they have indicators but she did not see them being used, instead the car horn is the main way of getting the other driver’s attention. They were soon on a bus heading to Alexandria, the ancient capital of Egypt. It’s a very modern city but the outer suburbs are home to the very poor. They visited an ancient lighthouse and also saw Pompey’s Pillar, the largest ever constructed outside of Rome. Now it was back to Cairo and the exciting Museum of Ancient Egyptian History. They saw Tutankhamun’s death mask and the wonderful treasure that was buried with him. Another must see is the Mummy Room where many of the well preserved mummies are on show. The museum is just packed with ancient relics. A new museum is under construction and when completed will house these priceless relics and will have airconditioning too. While in Cairo, Emily and Ashley say you are aware of the huge constructions on the edge of the city so next stop was the pyramids. They are just massive. Standing on the Giza Plateau together with the Sphinx they are incredible to see and as you travel Egypt you become aware of the huge number of pyramids throughout the country. Next an overnight bus to Luxor where massive temples, huge obelisks and rows of Sphinxes provide a breathtaking experience. They took a felucca, a local boat with a massive sail, to glide along the Nile stopping along the way. They visited a Nubian Village and dined with them. Emily says the Nubians are so friendly and they could not do enough for them. Page 22 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1429 Wednesday, October 31, 2018
Further along the Nile they reached the Aswan High Dam and in its waters the Philae Temple moved to its present location as the waters of the dam rose. They also reached Abu Simbel. Again a massive temple complex moved to a new site above the water line. Last they visited the Valley of the Kings and it was a case of keeping the best to last. They entered three tombs and they were amazed at what they saw in the tomb of Ramses the 4th the colours of the paintings and etched images on the walls were just mind boggling. It was a truly wonderful experience. Leaving Egypt they flew to Dubai for two days and their first experience was a desert Safari. Racing across the sand dunes in 4X4s they would slide sideways down the dune. Both Emily and Ashley say this was an incredibly exciting experience. Then that night they attended a dinner in the desert complete with belly dancers and even a Swirling Dervish with his great gown swirling around. The hem caught on fire so the dancer removed it to put it out. It was of course all just part of the act. Now they flew to Johannesburg in South Africa and spent two nights at the Kruger National Park game driving. They saw the big five; lion, elephant, hippo, leopard and buffalo. They camped in small tents during their time in Kruger. They were in an enclosure away from the animals but you still felt you were out there with them as the animals made noises in the night. Next was Zimbabwe and the Matobo National Park. More game drives, more wild animal sightings and a visit to a village where the people were so friendly they did not want to leave. Finally they arrived at Victoria Falls. It was the dry season but the falls still put on a great show. Known locally as the smoke that thunders the falls were truly a beautiful experience. It was time to fly home but what wonderful experiences they had along the way; memories that will remain with them. Both Emily and Ashley would like to thank Grace Townsend from Helloworld Travel in

Thousands to converge on region for AFL V/Line Cup MORE than 2,500 visitors are expected to flock to the region in the 2019 September school holidays, when the top male and female regional footballers go head-to-head in the AFL V/Line Cup four day carnival. During the 2018 V/Line cup event, more than 550 of the most talented regional footballers and umpires showcased their skills, with eight girl’s teams and 14 boy’s teams lacing up their bots in the four day development carnival. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said, “Hosting this
event is a massive coup and continues our tradition of hosting high profile AFL events in partnership with our partners, AFL Victoria and AFL Goulburn Murray. “Our teams are working hard creating jobs, keeping business busy and the economy strong and this event will be a great showcase of this with over $2M injected into Greater Shepparton.” AFL Goulburn Murray regional general manager, Jamie Macri said the region was delighted to be chosen to host the state’s best under 15 and under 16 players and top

regional umpires. “AFL Goulburn Murray is thrilled to be able to host the V/Line Cup carnival, which has fast become a favourite on the football calendar and an important part of the talent
pathway for both umpires and players. “We’re proud to welcome the next generation of football talent to our region and look forward to hosting them at some of our premier sporting facilities.”
Cyclists see ‘silver lining’ in cancer cause By Ash Beks TWELVE inspirational cyclists are riding from Canberra to Melbourne to raise money for ovarian cancer as part of the Silver Lining Ride. Emotions were running high when we caught up with the riders during their pit-stop at Bendigo Bank Shepparton branch. Sweaty and exhausted, but beaming with enthusiastic excitement, the riders had just completed their longest ride of the trip, an incredible 172.2km journey from Albury to Shepparton (which they accomplished in just six hours!).
Bendigo Bank is a major sponsor of the almost 1,000km trip and the team at the Shepparton branch (and others along the way) rattled tins and accepted community donations for the cause. Many of the riders have known people affected by cancer and their incredible journey, ‘from the capital of the country to the capital of coffee,’ is dedicated to all those who have been touched by the disease. In particular, this year accomplished rider, Justin Flynn joined the team and was riding for his wife Leone, who is
currently battling ovarian cancer. Following from their stop at Shepparton, the dedicated dozen stopped over at Bendigo, then Romsey, before finally zooming to Melbourne and arriving at their final stop at the MCG where family and friends were waiting to congratulate the group on their enormous effort. When asked what else was in store for them when they arrived at their final destination, rider and Ova rian Cancer Resea rch Foundation ambassador, Clint Stanaway
chuckled and said, “Hopefully a beer and a bath.”

ND WITH SUZANNA PAUL BRIGGS SHEPPARTON “As an independent Suzanna came on the political scene at the right time. Both parties can see the need to invest in our region. She’s worked with us on indigenous development. Having an independent gives us a point of difference. I don’t think we can get that if we are in a safe seat. For me there is no reason to want to change. “
“Suzanna has highlighted the important issues that needed to be addressed in our region very successfully. I feel Suzanna as an independent member for Shepparton, has given our electorate strong honest leadership and I look forward to her building on this into the future.”
RICK CROSS TOOLAMBA
TRAVIS STANGER SHEPPARTON
“One of the most important things I believe Suzanna has done is bring a breath of fresh air to the issue of water. She has built on her depth of knowledge and has brought together the most influential and knowledgeable group of people to help set water policy. This region relies on water. We can’t afford to bring someone else in starting from scratch.“
“Having an independent has meant we have been able to secure the train line upgrades we’ve needed. This let’s people like myself stay local and work as well as staying in touch with the city. We now have so many more work opportunities in the local area which has given myself job security and a future to look forward to.”
DR. JOHN MACKELLAR MOOROOPNA
JENNA BUZZA MOOROOPNA
“Suzanna is involved with several major developments in this district but, for me, the development of Goulburn Valley Health is the most important. Her support for an integrated cancer centre is well known, but her support for a regional mother-baby unit will help mitigate our biggest problems such as child abuse, mental health problems, drug abuse and early death in our most vulnerable. Her position as an independent is a great asset to this community, not a weakness.”
“Suzanna has brought a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the district to her first term and the things she has been able to achieve are great. We are getting funding for our hospital, for our rail and for the education plan. So much has happened in such a short amount of time. I believe Suzanna is focussed not just on now, she is really looking to the future.”
RACHEL COGLAN SHEPPARTON
SIMONE GAYLE SHEPPARTON
“As a midwife I understand the importance of keeping families together. Thanks to Suzanna through the Goulburn Valley Health redevelopment we will see an increase in our special care nursery beds. Being able to treat more babies locally will benefit so many local families.”
“Suzanna has worked hard to address some of the main issues and concerns for our community. I respect her dedication and passion to improving education outcomes so our kids have better opportunities.”
NICOLA VILLANI SHEPPARTON
JAMIE LEA SHEPPARTON
“Suzanna listens and understands the needs and issues facing young people. I’m looking forward to her work on the trains meaning it will get easier for me to travel to and from Melbourne.”
“I stand with Suzanna because I believe in the power of momentum. Suzanna is authentic, she listens and she is dedicated to doing the very best she can for our region. She has achieved so much for Shepparton and our future, we need too keep the momentum going.”
WHAT’S NEXT
It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come in such a short period of time – the building blocks for a thriving community are underway, so let’s keep the momentum going and work together to achieve even more. My vision for a proudly independent Shepparton District includes:
ealth All stages completed at Goulburn Valley Health with first ass services and an integrated cancer centre esidential mother-baby unit to help families their children the best start to life ied health hub at the Hunter Building to alleviate ures on the hospital and provide the community sy and holistic access to services

Keep Shepparton District proudly independent Four years ago we took a stand to make Shepparton District an independent marginal seat and it has delivered in spades for our community. We’re seeing real investment and real change in our region for the first time in decades and there’s much more we can achieve.
