It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas SHEPPARTON Chamber of Commerce and Industry have recently completed a stunning Christmas and window display inside Shepparton’s Tower Arcade. The display was completed this week and features displays submitted by Shepparton Textile Artists Inc., Goulburn Valley Quilters, Ella Egan, Eastern Goulburn Country Women’s Association and Goulburn Valley Rail Club. At the western end of Tower Arcade, there is also a stunning Christmas tree display, which has been set up by Wendy Crow. The entire arcade displays the immaculate effort of many within the community and is well worth a visit.

Hundreds of events inject over $44M into economy OVER the past year, tourism has played a major part in boosting the region and has injected more than $44M into the local economy. Throughout the 2018 year, 266 major events drew in big numbers, with 351,946 attending the events, of which 140,054 were visitors from outside the region who spent a total of 103,823 nights in local accommodation. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said, “This year has seen Greater Shepparton go from strength to strength by hosting a range of different events. We have hosted events most weekends that have been very beneficial for our local

businesses, community and visitors. “The streets, parks and shops have been filled with visitors to the region as part of the events calendar, which has drawn more than 350,000 attendees throughout the year,” Cr O’Keeffe said. Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou said hosting significant events had a flow on effect for the wider community. “We are coming off the back of perhaps the busiest month of visitation weekends for Greater Shepparton, creating a boom for our accommodation, retail and hospitality industries,” Ms Christou said.

“Major recent events such as the Victorian State Netball Titles, Basketball Australia Under 14 Girls Club Championships, Australian Football Skools International Soccer Championships, Challenge Shepparton Triathlon, Victorian Open Bowls and the upcoming Junior Basketball Tournament are packing out the region which has seen more than 100,000 nights of accommodation generated this past year. “Not only do these major events generate a growth of spending for our local businesses but they also bring jobs to the region, with this past year seeing 319 full time equivalent jobs supported by the major events program.”

Courageous tales celebrated over coffee and toast DETERMINATION, bravery and inclusivity were discussed during Shepparton Access’ Annual Day of People with Disability Celebration Breakfast on Friday. Guests were treated to a story of courage from Rye Shawcroft, competitor in seated volleyball and wheelchair basketball in the 2018 Invictus Games Down Under. 23-year-old Rye shared his empowering personal story of how he defied physical and mental odds to compete in the games. After suffering excruciating pains in his knees and back, Rye’s health deteriorated throughout 2015 and by late 2016 he required a wheelchair to move more than 100m. With sheer determination and the help of his family, friends and professionals, Rye began slowly regaining control of his life through his passion for sport. In October this year, Rye said he proudly executed his dream of achieving sporting greatness by successfully competing in the Invictus Games and for also becoming the first person in Australia to compete the Tough Mudder obstacle course in a wheelchair. “Sport has played a massive role in my rehabilitation, setting goals and becoming included in the broader community,” Rye said. The yearly breakfast at Bill and Beats is hosted by Shepparton Access to celebrate and recognise contributors and to ensure the organisation continues to provide successful pathways for people with disabilities.

Have your say on new music festival LOCAL residents are being encouraged to get involved with a new large-scale music festival that is set to hit Shepparton on November 2 next year. Greater Shepparton City Council and Red Hill Entertainment has invited the community to have their say on the name of the festival, the selected artists to perform and to provide feedback on other activities they would like to see feature at the festival. Greater Shepparton City Council Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou said the festival will be unique to the region. “This is an event that belongs to the community therefore we are giving residents the opportunity to shape this festival to be iconic to the region. “With expectations of attracting more than 2,000 attendees in the first year we want there to be something at the festival for everyone to enjoy.” Red Hill co-director, Aidan McLaren said they are looking forward to developing a show in the region. “We are keen to hear from the local area on what they’d love the festival to be,” Mr McLaren said. “We’d love people to take a moment to fill out the online survey telling us which Australian bands they’d most love to see play, which ages they think the festival should be targeted at, and what entertainment other than live music they would like to see included. “Anyone who completes the survey goes in the running for a free VIP double pass provided by Red Hill Entertainment to the inaugural event.” The online survey is now open and will run until Friday, December 7 and can be found at https://fs26.formsite.com/ unifygathering/SheppartonMusic/index.html

Mayor O’Keeffe takes Regional Cities Victoria role FOR the first time, Shepparton will have a dedicated voice in Regional Cities Victoria (RC V) in a senior role, with Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe being elected deputy chair last week. Mayor O’Keeffe said, “While I put my hand up for both chair and deputy, Mayor of Bendigo, Cr Margaret O’Rourke was re-elected as chair, but with my election as deputy, it sends a strong message to the group that I want to do more and have the opportunity to be involved in a stronger capacity. “RCV is a group of 10 regional cities represented by their mayors and CEOs and comprises the 10 largest cities in regional Victoria. T he cities include Shepparton, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, Horsham, Latrobe, Mildura, Wangaratta, Warrnambool and Wodonga. “ RC V i s d e d i c at e d t o a c h i e v i n g real change in regional Victoria and my aspiration as a member is to ensure Greater Shepparton is positioned as an equal in regard to investment and opportunity. As the deputy chair I will also be in the forefront of discussions and lobbying, giving Greater Shepparton a stronger position. In fact Greater Shepparton hasn’t held a chair position before so it is great to have that opportunity and to show strong leadership to create opportunities for our region. “I am determined to continue to build our Greater Shepparton brand and to attract investment and people to our region. We

are seeing such a positive change across our region and we will continue to work hard for things we need to do to continue for that to happen. “At our meetings we often have guest speakers and representatives from a broad range of areas as well as meetings with ministers and parliament representation. We do get to discuss the issues our own regions have and our future aspirations and the needs of our community, and also compare the differences among our regions, and the disadvantages, but also opportunities that we may have. “As a spokesperson in my role as deputy chair I will also have more opportunities be involved in broader discussions and to represent our region at other forums. “Last month I was the regional Victoria guest speaker at a Mental Health Forum in Melbourne for the Mental Health Foundation Australia alongside Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp. It is those opportunities that we get to showcase our region and to stand out as a great regional city and that put us in the forefront and in a positive light for our region. “At those forums I get to tell the story of Greater Shepparton and to share the success and opportunities on offer, as well as the great lifestyle. “I am really thrilled to have another year as the mayor and I will continue to work hard for our community and to strive to achieve the things we need as a region and for the people of Greater Shepparton.”

THE highly successful Dob in a Dealer campaign has once again kicked off across the region, with local residents being called upon to help Crime Stoppers Victoria and the Victoria Police disrupt the manufacture and supply of drugs in the local area. The Dob in a Dealer campaign is a nation-wide program funded by the Federal Government to stop Australia’s supply chain of illicit drugs including methylamphetamine (ice), cocaine, MDMA, heroin and cannabis. Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO, Erika Owens said, “Criminal drug related activity is not only costing millions of dollars in healthcare and law enforcement, but it is tragically and unnecessarily costing human lives,” Erika said. “We know that information from the community helps to solve crime, we see it every day at Crime Stoppers, so please get behind this campaign and report what you know. “Together, we can make our community a safer place to work and live.” Inspector Dave Ryan of the Victoria Police reinstated the importance of community involvement when addressing the import, manufacture and supply of illicit drugs. “It’s time to take stand for your community and your mates. “Your report might not be actioned this week, or even this month but every single piece of the puzzle counts and your information might just be the missing piece we need to hinder the supply of illicit drugs in our community,” Insp Ryan said. “Together, the Shepparton community and Victoria Police can work together to stem the import, manufacture and supply of illicit drugs.” If you have any information about someone who is manufacturing or dealing drugs, you can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at www.crimestoppers. com.au. You can remain anonymous.

YOUR TOWN, YOUR NEWS LOCATED in the Strathbogie Shire, Euroa is home to 4,113 people. Landy wins Australian Young Rider Championship LOCAL Euroa equestrian, Sophia Landy has just returned from the Australian International Three Day Event, where she took out the prestigious Australian Young Rider Eventing Championship. The event is the highlight of the eventing calendar with riders travelling from around Australia and internationally. Winning the event on an ex-racehorse, affectionately known as Hughie, Landy is known for her skill in bringing on horses and produced Hughie herself, turning him into a top level eventer. Landy said, “He has come up through the levels remarkably quickly.

“He has only been off the track for 18 months and was the youngest off the track horse at the event. “He is still relatively young and inexperienced in eventing. The fact that he put in such a consistent performance at such a high profile event is really exciting for his future.” Landy’s affinity with horses started young. She had her first horse on her grandparents’ farm in south west Gippsland, broke in her first horse at age 14 and started producing horses for eventing and show jumping in her teenage years. She has been riding professionally ever since she left school.

CHOCTOPS and popcorn were excitedly consumed at a recent celebratory screening of Love Actually at the Euroa Community Cinema in commemoration of 15 years of good old-fashioned entertainment. Boasting humble beginnings in an exceptional location, the Euroa Community Cinema officially opened its doors on Friday, November 14, 2003. The Bury Street Euroa Community Conference Centre has a beautiful art-deco design and a heart-warming nostalgia that’s often lost in modern theatres. Since 2003, the cinema has hosted over 1,600 screenings of over 760 different films and throughout this time, the Euroa Community Conference Centre has grown markedly. Initially showing one film per fortnight, the cinema has since expanded to show one film per week, with additional Friday night screenings, community fundraiser films and school holiday matinees for kids. Over the 15 years, the cinema has had over 80 local volunteers dedicate their time and energy into bringing the cinema to life on the weekends; assisting with running the projector, selling tickets and working the kiosk. Local film enthusiast, Lorraine Millard has volunteered her time every week since the opening and says she’s proud of how far the cinema has grown since its humble inception. “There have been several major changes

throughout my time here as a volunteer. The biggest change was when we moved the balcony chairs to downstairs and installed the new cinema seats,” Lorraine said. “It was also a pretty major change when we upgraded to digital from analogue. The difference is certainly notable and this cinema sounds and looks just as good as any major cinema screen.” T he Eu roa C om mu n it y Ci nema is always seeking new volunteers and they are encouraging anybody interested in putting up their hand to assist to email Council Offices at info@strathbogie.vic.gov.au or call 1800 065 993. She was always in front with her theory assessments. “She has always been a very polite and well-mannered student in class who got along with everyone and never showed signs of stress or disharmony. “Her willingness to learn and ability to get on with any person from any background or stature made her the perfect candidate to take on competitions like Excellence in Baking and WorldSkills. A heartless crime just before Christmas “Brandon had been saving by doing his chores to buy his new scooter and he didn’t look like he was quite going to make it so we ended up paying the remainder of it for him as an early Christmas present. Chloe’s scooter was also an early Christmas present,” Leanne said. “Three weeks ago, they got up in the morning and came to me and asked mum where are our scooters? “That was their Christmas present and I can’t afford to replace them. It’s just devastating. “These kids are going to miss out this Christmas and it’s just not fair.” Shepparton Police crime prevention

officer, Leading Senior Constable Glenn Gibson said, “You can do a few things to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime while your home is vacant over holidays. “Ensure your garden is well maintained, letterbox cleared and home looks lived in. “Lock away in shed or garage all bikes, garden equipment, ladders and tools. “Is it possible for a friend or relative to house sit for longer holidays? “Encourage your wonderful neighbours to utilise your driveway, clothesline and even your garden and pool while away. “If possible have your dog/s cared for at home and they will continue to deter a burglar while you are away.

“Discuss with your electrician about installing external motion sensor LED security lights at all entry points. “Back-up computer hard drives and keep these copies in a remote location. “Shred old mail and statements that have your personal details. Do they need to be stored? “The only jewellery, cash and documents that you leave unsecured are those that will not leave you devastated if stolen. Annoyed yes, but devastated no. “Is the boring but crucial task of taking images of valuable items including serial numbers up to date? This will assist police and insurance claims should it be required.”

Husband and wife wins a first for golf club By David Lee W HEN The Adviser caught up with local husband and wife, Max and Diane Newman to talk about them each winning their category at the Mooroopna Golf Club Championships, it was a story full of coincidences. When they took to the green on Sunday, November 18, Diane and Max didn’t know that they would not only make history by being the only husband and wife to both win at the same championship in the club’s 89 year history, but that they would also both take the win at the same hole…16.

Max who won the C Grade and Diane who won the B Grade said, “We were a bit chuffed and surprised at the win. “The game was full of coincidences for us. Not only did we both take the win on the 16th hole but we also shot the same score on the back 9. “It’s amazing how in that sort of game that it worked out like that.” Max has been playing at the club for 27 years and playing golf for 40 years. Diane has been playing golf for 15 years at the club and will take on the Pro-Am on December 9.

GOTAFE GVL in good shape AT the GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League’s Annual General Meeting recently, chairman David Roff was pleased to announce an operating profit of $4,101 for the 2018 season. Roff said, “We are mindful of operating in an environment where clubs are subject to ever increasing costs. “There needs to be a balance between the league remaining sustainable and keeping club costs to an absolute

minimum. “The board is happy with this year’s financial result as this also included a Club Grant payment of $10,000 to the Shepparton Swans to assist them to purchase new netball and football scoreboards. Over the last two seasons, $80,000 has been provided to eight clubs for capital works projects worth around $450,000 in total. This money has been made available from the sale of the league’s former Dunkirk Avenue premises, and with net assets of just under

$300,000, the league is in a very strong financial position.” The board also welcomed a new member in Amy Marshall. Amy has a strong background in volunteering with different clubs and community groups in the local area and experience in strategic planning. Roff said, “Amy brings a great skill set to the board and we look forward to working with her. “I’d also like to sincerely thank outgoing board member Rhonda Kortum for all of the hard work she has done for the league over the last two years. Rhonda joined the board at a crucial time, involving the amalgamation of the football and netball leagues and her contribution to the league cannot be understated.”

Official GOTAFE GVL fixture released THE official 2019 GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League fixture was released on Monday night, with clubs again given the chance to negotiate time and day changes to the fixture. For the 2019 season, there will be six night games in the first four rounds, including the regular night game between Shepparton and Shepparton United on Good Friday. There will also be a second Good Friday game this year, with Benalla taking on Seymour during the day. There will be a split round in early August for round 16 and general byes on the weekends of May 18 and July 13 for the Community Championships and the Vic Country games, respectively. GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League chairman, David Roff said, “The negotiated fixture changes result in a healthy balance for all. “The major focus for clubs was the request for more ‘rivalry rounds’ during the year, which will be beneficial for gates and exciting for football and netball games across the league.” To attain a copy of the 2019 GOTAFE Goulburn Valley League, visit www.gvleague.com.au or check out GV League on Facebook and Twitter.
