season are cherries, which are this year experiencing notable growth in size and harvest due to the hotter than normal weather. Summerfruit Australia CEO, John Moore said, “The fruit season is good in Shepparton this year. Continued on page 12

Seeing the International Space Station through a lens A CHANCE occurrence took place recently for locals Jacqui and Jason Hayward, who just couldn’t miss the opportunity to look to the skies and snap a long exposure photo of the International Space Station when it passed through the skies over Shepparton while a spacecraft was attempting to dock to it. Travelling at 27,000km/h and orbiting roughly 400km from Earth, the International Space Station is a space station, or a habitable artificial satellite, in low Earth orbit. Its first component launched into orbit in 1998, with the first long-term residents arriving in November 2000. It has been inhabited continuously since that date.

It is possible that Jacqui and Jason captured the moment that NASA astronaut Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency, and Oleg Konenenko of the Russian space agency Roscosmos joined Expedition 57 Commander Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency), Serena Auñón-Chancellor of NASA, and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos aboard the International Space Station.

$5B for Future Drought Fund T H E Coalition Government recently introduced legislation to establish a new, secure, revenue stream for drought resilience, preparedness and recovery, which will grow to be worth $5B. The fund will help give out farmers tools to prepare for, manage and sustain their businesses through drought and will deliver infrastructure projects, promote the adoption of new technology and help improve environmental and natural resource management on farms. M i n i s t e r fo r A g r i c u lt u r e , D av id

Littleproud said the Future Drought Fund was a forward-looking policy which will pay off for decades to come. “We’re guaranteeing long-term revenue to build drought resilience,” Minister Littleproud said. Minister for Finance and the Public Service, Mathias Cormann said the fund would start with $3.9B, growing to $5B over the next decade. “From July 1, 2020, $100M will be directed annually to fund a wide range of drought resilience projects, while the balance

is reinvested the fund. “A predictable funding stream for drought resilience will enable Australia’s $60B agricultural industries to fulfil their potential.” The government will develop and publish the Drought Resilience Funding Plan to ensure a transparent and consistent approach to funding drought resilience projects. “The plan will be informed through public consultation and reviewed at least every four years to ensure it captures emerging priorities,” Minister Cormann said. Pre-Christmas appeal launched for drivers VICTORIANS are being urged to keep each other safe on the roads this festive season with the Andrews Labor Government and road safety authorities launching a pre-Christmas appeal to drivers, ‘knocking on doors.’ The devastating ‘death knock’ that police make when a person is killed on Victorian roads is at the heart of a new Transport Accident Commission (TAC) campaign and road safety plea. While the 195 lives lost so far this year is a record low for the start of December, it is no comfort for the families and friends facing Christmas without their loved ones. With almost one person killed every day between the start of December and Christmas last year, drivers are being urged to slow down, plan their trips and make safe choices when hitting the road these holidays.

The campaign was developed to remind people about the tragic outcomes of risk-taking behaviour on the roads and urges people to think about the ripple effect of the choices made. Last year, 23 people died on Victorian roads from the start of December to Christmas Day, and six people lost their lives between Christmas and the New Year. The police and the TAC will have a strong presence across the state these holidays, with extra police shifts and community information campaigns to curb the number of people being killed on country roads. TAC lead director road safety, Samantha Cockfield said, “The festive period is a busy, high-risk time on Victorian roads with people taking longer trips, and attending social events, so our message is to avoid fatigued driving, drink and drug-driving, distractions, and slow down.”

A fond farewell to Sue Nalder By David Lee WITH La Trobe University’s outgoing head of campus, Sue Nalder bidding her role farewell this week, The Adviser sat down with her for one last chat about some of her favourite things in life, her time at La Trobe and what her plans for the future are. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? A really good barbeque with friends and family, but I am particularly fond of the many wonderful different salads. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOTBALL TEAM? I’ll have to say the mighty Tigers…Richmond. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK? Over the past few years I haven’t read too many books, mainly articles for the university, but I do love autobiographies. IS THERE A PARTICULAR PERSON THAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION IN LIFE? I would have to say my mum. She is 92 years of age. I have always been inspired by her strong work ethic and how she makes the most of each day. She always supports and encourages her family and friends. IF YOU COULD HOLIDAY ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD YOU GO? Our favourite spot… the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. It has beautiful beaches and surf. I

would love to go to Poland and explore one day though. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE MOMENT AT LA TROBE? It would be the turning of the sod of the new building at Fryers Street and its opening. It was symbolic of so many opportunities for our community in gaining a higher education. It’s been a real community business where everyone has worked together to make it all happen. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT? With La Trobe it would be building up the school of business accounting department at the Shepparton campus. Personally, it would Ian and I having our five children and seeing them happy. WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU? Enjoying home life, family and friends and exploring more of Australia with my husband.

Community Christmas display towers towards the stars A BRILLIANT array of new Christmas displays has been expertly executed for all to enjoy in the Shepparton Tower Arcade. The gorgeous decorations, compiled by the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry, utilises stunning window displays from local artists and community groups. The Tower Arcade window displays are proudly submitted by Shepparton Textile Artists Inc., Goulburn Valley Quilters, Eastern Goulburn Country Women’s Association and the Goulburn Valley Rail Club. Also featured in the window displays is a unique textile design by local resident Ella Egan, titled Partridge in a Pear Tree. The delightful window display is an absolute eye-opener, made from Japanese maple wired and bent into shape, silk fibres, a felt trunk, homemade silk paper, hand-embroidered partridge and pears shaped out of fabric. In addition to the window display, Wendy Crow from the chamber has utilised the glass roof by crafting star stencils that allow the skylight to pass through, to unique effect. There is also a stunning, enormous tree display on the western end of the arcade and bouquets and other displays utilised throughout. The entire arcade showcases the spectacular efforts of many within the community and is absolutely worth visiting.

I’d like to congratulate Cheryl Hammer, Peter Schwarz, Bill Heath, Murray Willaton and Nickee Freeman for putting up their hands and taking on the task. “While we may represent differing political views, I applaud all candidates who care deeply about their community and seek to make a positive contribution.” Liberal Candidate for Shepparton, Cheryl Hammer said, “I congratulate Suzanna on being returned as the Member for Shepparton. I look forward to her delivering everything she has told us an independent could deliver in her second term. “Importantly, I would like to thank everyone who voted for me, making the contest for the seat of Shepparton a very close one. I am pleased and proud of how well I polled, particularly in the face of the statewide result for the Liberal Party, but it is not the result I was working towards. Being one of the best performing Liberal’s in the state is bittersweet. “Thank you to my campaign team and the

Prepare and plan ahead with GMCU CHRISTMAS is a great time of year for spending time with family and friends. It is also the perfect time to reflect on the year that has been and to begin planning for the year ahead, something GMCU Shepparton are experts in assisting with. If you are planning to buy your first or next home in 2019, starting now is a great way to ensure you are well prepared and ready to buy when you find the ideal property. When looking at possible purchases, make sure you have researched the area you are buying in. How are the surrounding suburbs expected to grow in value? Are there any proposed developments that may impact the area? Look at the comparable properties in the area to work out how much you’re prepared to pay. Another important first step is to think about how much you might need to save for your deposit, or to understand how much equity is available in your current home. Talking to your financial institution early is a good way to make sure you are on the right track. They can also help you understand the different finance options available and the best

ways to boost your savings. GMCU Shepparton branch manager, Dallas Moore said, “At GMCU, we recognise that buying a home is much more than the process of getting a home loan. Supporting our members throughout the whole buying experience is an important part of what we do, right from the earliest stages of planning for purchase. “Our team are always only a phone call

away if you have any questions at any step along the way.” GMCU has ten branches located throughout the region, each with experienced lenders who can help homebuyers with their choices, including branches in Shepparton, Mooroopna, Kyabram, Benalla, Echuca, Numurkah, Euroa, Seymour and Kilmore. Shepparton experiencing bumper fruit season By David Lee “Fruit including apricots, peaches, nectarines and plums will be going to mainland China from the Shepparton region. Last year we didn’t have all of the Shepparton region’s growers registered for shipment to China, but this year, everyone interested in sending to China is registered. “We expect huge numbers to come from the Shepparton area. “There was a significant increase in registrations in the Shepparton area. 122 people are registered for China Australiawide and 20-30 of those are from the Shepparton area. “The extra registrations out of Shepparton this year will mean that the volumes of fruit being exported will be higher. “As far as tonnage from the Shepparton area there was a couple of thousand tonnes of the combined commodities going to China. “As an industry 17,800 tonnes were exported from across

Australia, and we expect that to increase this year by 20 percent.” Despite several bad weather conditions, from hailstorms to drought, chair of Summerfruit Australia and stonefruit grower, Andrew Finlay is also confident that this year’s crop is shaping up to be sweeter than ever. “Stonefruit thrives during drought-weather; so, despite the drier conditions and minimal rainfall, this season’s fruit will be nice and sweet,” Andrew said. Local orchardist at Temhem Orchards, Shannan Mehmet said, “We have an abundance of fruit this year and the quality is good. “More orchardists are diversifying into the fresh fruit and export markets. We will be handling domestic sales up until Christmas and then into the new year we will ramp up our exports to China which we hit hard for about a month, so we are anticipating that to be good as well.”

Dhelk Dja (pronounced ‘delk ja’) are the Dja Dja Wurrung words meaning ‘good place’. Dhelk Dja is the foremost, Aboriginalled Victorian Agreement that commits the signatories – Aboriginal communities, Aboriginal services and government – to work together and be accountable for ensuring that Aboriginal people, families and communities are stronger, safer, thriving and living free from family violence.

Dhelk Dja recognises the urgent need to reduce the disproportionate impact of family violence on Aboriginal people, particularly women and children. It is integral to the agreement that accountability for perpetrators of violence is recognised and reprimanded accordingly, with education and prevention a central focus. The agreement also recognises that family violence is not a part of Aboriginal culture and that family violence against Aboriginal people is perpetrated by both nonAboriginal and Aboriginal people. Dhelk Dja articulates the long-term partnership and directions required at a state-wide, regional and local level, to ensure that Aboriginal communities are violencefree and are built upon the foundation of Aboriginal self-determination. The Dhelk Dja slogan - ‘Safe Our Way: Strong Culture, Strong Peoples, Strong Families’ – represents this vision, ensuring Aboriginal leaders, communities and spokespeople are central to the continued execution of the agreement. In essence, Aboriginal spokespeople must remain critically involved in all processes and services to reduce family violence and improve outcomes for Aboriginal people and children. In order for this to work, Aboriginal spokespeople must be present across all services; police, the justice system and the courts; housing and homelessness services; children and family services; child protection

and out-of-home care; and health, mental health and substance abuse. At Monday’s ceremony, the Hume Dhelk Dja Action Groups regional chairperson and Aboriginal Elder, Aunty Alice Solomon spoke proudly of her continued efforts in assisting the Aboriginal community throughout her years of service. Aunty Alice said, “Across Victoria, there are 11 Dhelk Dja Action Groups, each implementing community-led responses to family violence. The Action Groups act as a critical conduit for children, families and communities. “It is with great pride that we continue to represent the interests of the local Aboriginal community.” At the ceremony, guests were treated to a traditional smoking ceremony, traditional dances and song. Handcrafted message sticks were also handed over to the AFL Goulburn Murray and Kyabram District Football Netball League for their continued efforts in championing the Hume Dhelk Dja Action Group. I f you or someone you k now is experiencing violence, phone 1800 RESPECT (on 1800 737 732) for advice or support. This free service provides confidential advice 24/7. In an emergency, phone 000. KEEPING THE VALLEY FRUIT FLY FREE… From left, Goulburn Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) personnel, Elliot Howse, Rosalie McCauley, Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly coordinator, Ross Abberfield and DPIRD technical officer, Keelin Smith are working together to eradicate the Queensland Fruit Fly. The east and west working together to eradicate fruit fly pests COLLABORATION between the east and west has strengthened the capabilities of the Goulburn Murray Valley (GMV) to rid the region of the Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF). Area-wide management has been applied to the two regions to control QWFF locally and the Mediterranean Fruit Fly (Medfly) further afield in the west. GMV regional fruit fly coordinator, Ross Abberfield recently took up an invitation from the Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to inspect Perth and Carnarvon’s Sterile Insect Technology (SIT) facilities and to engage with grower and community groups. Mr Abberfield said, “The exchange was a mutually beneficial experience. We have learned from each other, established bonds and will continue to share knowledge and experiences. “There are many lessons we have been able to learn from sharing our insights and knowledge which can be used in the fight against QFF.” The Carnarvon project combines grower and community engagement to improve on-farm hygiene practices with a variety of control activities to reduce Medfly numbers, including a baiting and trapping program for the use of SIT release. Put simply, SIT is the rearing of male Medflies that are sterilised and released into affected areas so that wild females that mate with a sterile male produce no offspring. More than five million sterile males are released in the Carnarvon region each week with the area experiencing a significant decrease in the number of wild Medflies caught in its trapping grid. Christmas across the world WHILE most of us here in Australia have a very good grasp on the tradition of Christmas and the big man in red, have you ever stopped to think how others across the world celebrate the festive season and what Santa means to them?

FRANCE Père Noël (pair no-wel) - one of the more traditional names for Santa - delivers his presents on December 6, which is known as the Feast of the Kings. The French have a cake called the ‘galette des Rois’ that is divided so that each guest gets a slice, as well as leaving an extra piece for any unexpected guest. GERMANY T h e G e r m a n s ce l e b r ate with d e r Weihnachtsmann (vai-nahckts-mahn) and use an advent calendar (invented by German Lutherans in the 19th century) to count down the days left before Christmas Day. Advent calendars have come a long way since then, with makeup, jewellery, beer and even cheese now popular versions to help count the days. ITALY While Santa is normally depicted as a jolly, good natured, kind person in many countries, this is not so in Italy. Befana (bee-far-na) is a witch who leaves coal for the naughty children and lollies for the well behaved. Befana is known to fly down chimneys or enter by shimmying through keyholes.

Personally, we wouldn’t want to see either!

SWEDEN Santa is called Jultomten (jool-tom-tun), normally shortened to Tomten in Sweden. Christmas is celebrated in the afternoon on Christmas Eve and this is when Tomten makes an appearance too. In Sweden, smorgasbords contain a wide-ranging spread of food and are eaten throughout the year. At Christmas, a typical smorgasbord contains the traditional ham alongside pork sausages, anchovy dip, herring salad and rye bread. ICELAND Icelanders go all out for Christmas with their festive celebrations lasting 26 days! Beginning on December 11, when Yule Lads or jólasveinarnir (yola-sveen-ah-nish) arrive and continues through to January 6. The Yule Lads are a group of 13 mischievous tricksters accompanied by the evil Christmas Cat. GREECE In Greece, Santa is called Ágios Vasí lis (ah-gee-os bah-see-lees) and is celebrated for the full 12 days of Christmas beginning on Christmas Day and ending on January 6, which is known as the Feast of Epiphany. Ágios Vasílis delivers small gifts to children on January 1. In order to keep evil spirits away, Greeks ensure fires are lit in their homes for the 12-day period, stopping any unwanted spirits from entering through their chimneys.

No need to spend Christmas alone By David Lee CHRISTMAS is all about coming together and spending the day with others, but sometimes our loved ones are too far away to do this, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend it alone. On Christmas Day you can drop down to the McIntosh Centre and spend it with others and the crew from the Christmas for Those Alone luncheon. Christmas For Those Alone Inc. acting secretary, Rita Costa said, “It is very rewarding and makes your day to see valued members of our community given the chance to have a great day and enjoy the atmosphere.

“We are always looking for volunteers, so if you are free on Christmas Day we’d love for you to pop down and join us.” Christmas For Those Alone will run on Christmas Day from 11am to 2pm at the McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds. The free Christmas Day lunch offers a delicious two course set menu, there will be a visit from Santa, gifts for children, a raffle and live music all in an atmosphere that provides a sense of camaraderie. For information on how to volunteer or for further information, contact 0417 349 449 or find ‘Christmas For Those Alone’ on Facebook. A public transport service is provided by calling 0438 041 465.

WITHOUT the help of appeals such as the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal, there are many who would go without during Christmas, and you can donate to the appeal now. Kmart officially kicked off its 31st year of the appeal together with The Salvation Army in Shepparton recently, to support disadvantaged people across Australia and New Zealand, which last year locally helped to support 400 families across the region. Gift contributions will be accepted until December 2, 2018 and financial contributions until January 31, 2019. Get involved in the appeal by: 1. Placing a gift under the Wishing Tree at any Kmart store 2. Decorate your home Christmas ornament wreath Time: 40 minutes Materials: Wreath frame Hot glue gun Tinsel Ornaments in varying sizes

Method: Start by wrapping your wreath frame in tinsel. This step alone would make an adorable wreath and would really only take about five minutes. Glue your ornaments to the frame and then together with a hot glue gun. Start with the larger ones and then fill in any open spaces with smaller ones. You can even throw in some jingle bell ornaments.

Christmas mason jar Materials: Mason jars Quarts (pints & quarts) Red chalky paint &

green chalky paint Painter’s tape Christmas tree stencil Scissors

Method: Overlap three pieces of painter’s tape on the bottom side of the mason jar box. Make sure edges are sealed tight. This will be the base to make your faux vinyl Christmas tree sticker. Print out a Christmas tree and cut it out. Trace the shape onto the painter’s tape. Cut out the Christmas tree shape and apply to the smooth sided mason jars. Use a credit card to seal edges tightly before painting. This will help reduce any paint bleeding through the sticker. Give the jars two coats of chalky finish paint. The great thing about this paint is it dries quickly. You can also use acrylic craft paint but the finish will be streakier – especially once you add the candle. Once dry, remove the tape. Add Epsom salt and tea lights and you ae done.

Your children can receive Christmas wishes from Santa THE magic of the Christmas season is upon us and Australia Post is encouraging young Australians to write and post their letters and wish lists nice and early to ensure they receive a reply from Santa before the big day. Expecting to deliver over 150,000 letters to the North Pole this year, Australia Post is also for the first time offering a large print service for families with children who have low vision. Australia Post spokesperson, Michelle Skehan said they are thrilled to be able to offer this new large print service for children and their families. “Christmas is a very special time of year for children of all ages, so we are pleased to be able to invite more families to get involved and celebrate the festivities,” Ms Skehan said. “Santa Mail is not only a cherished Christmas tradition in many households, but also a wonderful way for children to practise their letter writing skills at school or home. Sending a letter to Santa is a fun and easy way to show kids how to address,

stamp and post a letter. “The fun doesn’t stop at the post box either, children can follow the progress of their letter through our new interactive online tracker and there’s plenty of other Christmas activities children can find on our Santa Mail website.” To take part, send your festive letters to Santa, North Pole, 9999 with a 65c Christmas stamp on the front of the envelope and your name and return address on the back so Santa knows where to send his reply. Parents and children who have low vision can opt-in to receive a large text reply from Santa by sending their letters to: Santa Mail (large text) North Pole, 9999. Santa Mail letters can be placed in any dedicated Santa Mail box or red street post box, with families encouraged to lodge their letters before Friday, December 14, so Santa can reply before loading up his sleigh. Families are also encouraged to pick up and fill out the free Santa Mail postcards at participating Post Offices.

in Mooroopna TIRED FROM THE TOUGH WORK AT TALISMAN… Talisman Menswear owner, Paul Jerome is exhausted after a lot of hard work setting up his new store but invites the community to drop in to pick up that perfect Christmas gift. Photo: Katelyn Morse.

Exhausted from an

exhilarating expansion WHEN we dropped in to interview Paul Jerome at Talisman Menswear, we were shocked to find him in an exhausted heap slouched upon a chair in the corner, stock draped across him as he snoozed. The poor bugger had been working so hard on the gorgeous new renovations; half-dead, he had to rush to get changed into something presentable for the interview. Scanning the new store, you can see that so much love and sweat has been poured into the passion project. It’s something Paul has envisioned for almost 12 years and he is excited to be finally able to present his spectacular stock in a way he’s always wanted. The store is now fully decked with excellent exposed brick and gorgeous crates sourced from local orchardists expertly utilised throughout. The store now boats a uniquely rustic charm that also feels markedly modernist.

Ready for summer, the new Talisman Menswear is fully stocked for the celebratory season. Spacious enough to enable comfortable browsing, the store is fitted out with a great range of suits, ties, hats, shoes and all kinds of smart casual and formal wear. Once fed with coffee and awoken from his sluggish slumber, Paul Jerome said, “I’m very pleased to be able to finally present fresh new stock in this roomy new location. “I must give a warm thanks to all my customers for their patience throughout the renovation and I’m so appreciative of all the kind words from those who have already visited the new store.” Visit Paul Jerome at his spacious new location at 78 McLennan Street, Mooroopna to pick up that perfect Christmas gift or give the store a call on 5825 5170.

Maggie Beer’s

Sparkling Ruby Cabernet and Strawberry Jelly INGREDIENTS • 4 gold strength gelatine • 250g fresh strawberries leaves • 1 1/3 cup Maggie Beer • 1/2 cup mascarpone Sparkling Ruby Cabernet • 2 tbsp caster sugar

METHOD Place the strawberries and 200mL of the Sparkling Ruby Cabernet into a blender and blend for 30 seconds or until smooth. Strain through a fine sieve to remove the strawberry seeds, then set aside. Place the remaining amount of Sparkling Ruby Cabernet and the caster sugar into a small saucepan over a medium high heat and bring just to the boil, then remove from the heat and set aside. Place the gelatine leaves into a bowl of cold water and allow them to soften, then remove and squeeze out any excess moisture. Add these to the warm Sparkling Ruby Cabernet mixture and stir in well. Once this mixture has cooled for about 10 minutes, stir in the strawberry puree and combine well. Try to prevent any excess foam from forming. Pour the jelly mix into a serving bowl and scoop off any foam which is sitting on the top, then place into the fridge for approximately four hours to set. Serve with mascarpone and fresh strawberries.

Victorian retailers power into

Christmas shopping season VICTORIAN retailers are powering into the busy Christmas trading period, recording the highest retail trade growth in the nation. The Australian Bureau of Statistics recently confirmed Victoria’s retail trade increased by 6.4 percent over the year to October, the highest growth of all states and well above the national average of 3.6. percent. These exceptional results are good news for retailers in the lead up to Christmas and reflect strong growth across the Victorian economy. With massive annual retail sales of $82.8B, Victoria contributed 25.9 percent of total national retail sales for the year; another sign of strength in the state’s economy. Leading into the festive season, Victorian retail trade was up 0.6 percent in the month of October, with a total retail turnover of $7.1B, in comparison national retail trade growth increased by just 0.3 percent. The strongest annual retail trade growth was in the sectors of ‘clothing, footwear and personal accessories’ (10.3 percent) and ‘other retailing’ (8.4 percent including pharmaceutical goods).

Cranberry and sweet chilli jam PREPARATION TIME: 20 minutes COOKING TIME: 1 hour MAKES: 2 x 500ml jars

INGREDIENTS • 500g fresh or frozen cranberries • Finger sized piece of ginger, peeled and roughly chopped • 3-4 red chillies, roughly chopped (deseeded if you don’t like it too hot) • 200g golden caster sugar • 100mL red wine vinegar

METHOD Tip half the cranberries, the ginger and chillies into a food processor and whizz until very finely chopped. Scrape into a heavy-bottomed pan and add the remaining cranberries along with the sugar and vinegar, then bring everything to the boil, skimming off any scum that comes to the surface. Turn the heat down to a gentle simmer and keep cooking for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the jam is starting to become sticky, continue cooking for a further 5 mins, stirring frequently so that the mixture doesn’t burn on the bottom of the pan. It should look like a thick, bubbling lava. Cool slightly, then transfer to sterilised jars and leave to cool completely. Will keep for three months in a cool, dark place; keep in the fridge once opened.

Your pet deserves the

best

Pet care over Christmas EVEN the most social and friendly of all dogs can be overwhelmed during the noise and chaos of the Christmas holiday season, especially if you have lots of people over for a Christmas or New Year’s gathering. all the action in another room, with a yummy chew or filled Kong. Especially during the HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP more hectic times such as people arriving and KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE: If you think your dog may be overwhelmed leaving. Crates can be great in this situation! Play some music in the area or leave the TV with lots of new people, put them away from on to help mask the sounds of activity going on elsewhere. Even the most social of dogs will need a break from the activity, so make sure you have a suitable area or a crate the dog can chill out in. Assign an adult (not involved in supervising children) to be in charge of your dog if you can’t be – being sure they look out for signs of stress and protect your dog from any unwanted attention. Do not allow children to hug or kiss your dog. Dogs do not like hugs and kisses! Even a dog who tolerates this under normal circumstances, may not tolerate this from

strangers in a high stress situation with lots of noise and people. If your dog licks his lips, shows the whites of his eyes or turns his head away when a child or adult is patting him, intervene immediately. These are just a few signals dogs show when they are stressed.

concerns are macadamia nuts, onion, garlic, avocado, grapes, fatty ham trimmings, cooked bones and just 50g of chocolate can be toxic and can be fatal to dogs. Also ensure that your pets stay out of your guest’s luggage as they could have food or medication that could be dangerous to your pet’s health.

OTHER SIGNS THAT YOUR DOG DOES NOT WELCOME ATTENTION FROM CHILDREN OR ADULTS INCLUDE: • The dog tries to walk away or tries to hide under furniture. • The dog freezes and becomes very still with his mouth closed. He may be staring intently at the person bothering him and may growl. • The dog growls or raises fur along his back. • Supervise at all times! Prevention is the key, so help your dog have a Merry Christmas too! Remember not to feed your pets table scraps during the Christmas period. The main

Hi-tech Unimog arrives in time for fire season SUMMER is set to be a scorcher around Shepparton this year, with last week’s sweltering temperatures a mere teaser for the heat that’s set to dominate the forthcoming months. The drought has made the region so distinctly dry already; it’s essential that our spectacular firefighting services are prepared. This fire season, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) has a fleet of 41 Unimog firefighting tankers ready to be deployed across the state. The Mercedez Benz manufactured Unimog truck could be seen rolling around the Goulburn Valley last week alongside FFMVic’s new and improved Bell 212 helicopter for airborne services. The Unimog is an all-terrain vehicle, purpose-built and equipped with the latest

technology, including the unique Falling Object Protection System (FOPS), which would prevent falling trees and heated debris from puncturing or entering the cab of the truck. There is even a refrigerator inside the cab, a crucial addition to ensure our hardworking firefighters remain hydrated. Several hoses can be utilised to dispense some of the water from the 4,000 litre capacity tank, including a powerful highpressure system at the back. The wheels can also be inflated or deflated from within the cab of the truck, ensuring safety when traversing challenging terrain. safe but to also quickly locate and eradicate fires. “Inside the cab, the truck can seat four firefighters and there are several crucial safety features, including the Falling Object Protection System. There are also heatresistant curtains inside the vehicle and a sprinkler system outside to prevent the cab from overheating.” Forest Fire Management Victoria want to ensure the region remains fire-safe during the summer, especially around campfires. Since July this year, 70 local fires attended to by services had been started by campfires. FFMVic is encouraging all locals to observe the warnings before they start a fire anywhere and to never leave a campfire or barbeque unattended during the warmer months.

BERNADETTE Simcoe commenced as the official hairdresser at Harmony Village on April 7, 2003 and continues to provide an exceptional service to all the residents, both aged care and independent living ongoing. The initial space allocated to Bernadette to perform her duties was a small room adjoined to the laundry, but with the development and expansion of Harmony Village in 2006, Bernadette gained a big and functional Hairdressing Salon that has been operational ever since. The salon is open in the facility twice

weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Bernadette also accommodates individual residents with special appointments outside these days to cater for family events such as weddings or milestone birthdays. She really does go above and beyond the call of duty! Bernadette’s dedication and years of service are a real testament to her commitment and relationships with the Harmony Village community. She is considered family by most and is an absolute treasure to have on board.

A message from Doutta Galla CEO

Vanda Iaconese “THE new wing will enrich the lives of both current and future Harmony Village residents. Our people are important to us, which is why we want them to have the best experience possible at Doutta Galla. We want people to feel comfortable to be themselves as well as being a part of the wider community of people at Harmony Village.” Appointed as the chief executive officer of Doutta Galla in November 2013, Vanda has extensive experience working in executive roles in aged care, disability, local government and housing. Her aspiration for the organisation is that it will be the ‘go to’ place for individuals and their families seeking to access the best possible care and support as they age.

Vanda believes that innovation, research and the promotion of the positive aspects of being older, are key to the organisation achieving this aspiration.

enjoying the simple things MARGARET and Don Oakley moved to Harmony Village in 2012 and settled comfortably into an Independent Living Unit. The couple has really worked hard towards creating their own personal touch on the transformation of their unit, in particular the front and courtyard gardens. Their space is a calm and inviting environment with lovely homely vibes and décor to reflect their individual personalities and likes. Both Margaret and Don enjoy the simple things in life, reading the paper every morning with a coffee, sharing a chat in the community centre and attending Harmony

Village events and organised outings. They are active members in the Harmony Village community, with Don providing his cooking services at social Sunday barbeques and Margaret running the Thai Chi exercise classes twice weekly in the community centre. Margaret and Don are thrilled and lucky to

live in a safe place that promotes kindness, ongoing friendships and is conveniently located within a short walking distance to the Shepparton Marketplace shopping centre. When asked about what they love most about Harmony Village, Margaret and Don said, “It is perfect in every single way!”

Community club connection THE Shepparton East Bowls Club has successfully been operating as a privately owned establishment for 30 years. When the decision was made to build an Aged Care Facility followed by Independent Living Units - Harmony Village, across the road in Zurcas Lane, it was the start of a wonderful relationship between the two. In the early days, the Shepparton East Bowls Club was able to obtain a sports grant through Victoria Health. The grant funded an initiative for regular social bowling sessions catered to the needs of the aged care facility residents at Harmony Village. Since then, Harmony Village has annually utilised this space to host Christmas parties, market stalls and larger gatherings along with having access to the facilities in the event of emergencies and facility evacuations. Volunteers play an essential part of the day-to-day operations of the bowls club, with many of the volunteer committee members also residing in Independent Living Units at Harmony Village. Highlight fundraisers and events are the Oaks Day Lunch, Xmas in July and Twilight Bowls. New residents to the Independent Living Units at Harmony Village receive the first 12 months membership to the bowls club

RARE SIGHT CAPTURED… Harmony Village resident, Jan Maude is proud of her photograph of this green hooded orchid’s rare flowering. Photo: Jan Maude.

Compelled to capture pictures JAN Maude’s interest in taking pictures was first introduced to her by her sister, who gifted her with a camera in her semiretirement years; this was the beginning of a long-lasting passion and love for photography. Jan Maude lives with her husband, Ron at Harmony Village in an Independent Living Unit. Initially she was drawn to Harmony Village simply because of its tranquil Australian native garden and vast variety of plantings, little did she know at the time that it would play a vital role in aiding in the development of her photography skills and act as centre stage to her brilliant native pictures, all accessible to her just outside her front door. In the very beginning, Jan committed to a daily journal of pictures that she shared to online social media platform Blipfoto. This encouraged Jan to get out amongst the garden every single day and take a new picture that she would post for the Blipfoto community to view and comment on. Jan has always been fond of the bush setting and its wonderfully diverse range of native flora and bird life unique to Australia. She was very adamant that this would quickly become the focus of her vision and Jan continued her attention to detail when photographing birds, bees and native plants. Jan specialises in macro photography, Page 52 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1435 Wednesday, December 12, 2018

which relates to get ting up close and personal with the subject being photographed and then enhancing and sharpening the photos to view a remarkable and clear image of something truly beautiful. Jan’s favourite photograph would have to be this pictured image of a green hooded orchid. Extremely rare and no bigger than the size of a fingernail, she was so happy to stumble across the flowering plant during her many adventures in the local bush settings of this region. Since the very beginning, Jan has gone on to build and improve her talent. Her pictures frequently appear on the front pages of the monthly Independent Living Unit newsletters and were featured throughout the Harmony Village 2018 calendar. Produced for all residents as a lovely keepsake, the calendar serves as a reminder of the stunning surrounds within the Harmony Village gardens. Jan has enrolled in a photography course with U3A and set a goal for 2019 with a quest to capture the pursuit of birds in flight, aiming for that one perfect shot. Jan believes what makes a good photographer is an eye for detail and the ability to focus, setting your own level of involvement, seeing elements of composition and following your natural instinct.

land investing The truth about

VAC A N T l a nd i s one of t he mo st overlooked and misunderstood real estate investments in the world. On the surface, it seems simple, but there can be a lot of potential problems lurking beneath the surface of any piece of land so here is what to look out for.

What is the zoning on the property?

First and foremost, it is vitally important to understand what a property can be used for, and what the highest and best use of the property is. With a simple phone call to your local planning and zoning department, most offices can give you the answer to this question in a matter of seconds. Once you know the zoning classification, ask them to give you some examples of what type of property would be allowed under each of these particular zoning classifications.

What is the topography of the property?

There are many, many places around the world that have very unpredictable elevations. In many cases, the topography of the land can have a huge impact on the build-ability of a property.

What public utilities are available? (water, sewer, electric, gas and phone)

If a property doesn’t have access to one or more of these staples of reasonable living, the property may not be considered buildable. Since most people buy land with the intent building on it, you will definitely want to be aware of anything that could become an obstacle to that objective.

Page 54 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1435 Wednesday, December 12, 2018

What are the required building setbacks?

First, you need to understand the exact dimensions of the parcel of land you are evaluating. Next, call the local zoning depa r t ment a nd ask t hem what t he designated building setbacks are for the property in question. When you take these setbacks and regulations into account (relative to the size of this parcel of land), is there still enough room to build something worthwhile or does it render the property useless?

Is the property located in a flood zone?

In some parts of the country, parcels of land are vacant because they are literally under water. In other areas, there may be properties near bodies of water that are prone to flooding. In either case, if a

property is at risk of flooding you’ll want to know about this before you buy because when a property is in a flood zone, it can be extremely expensive to insure.

What do the surrounding properties look like?

The properties next door can have some major implications for the value and sale-ability of a parcel of land. For understandable reasons, most people care a great deal about who and what they live next to, so be sure to get a good idea for what the surrounding properties look like. Is this a desirable area? Is it the type of place where you (or anyone else) would want to live? If the surrounding properties have any obvious issues that are beyond your control, you’ll want to think very carefully about what this means for the property’s value and whether or not you want to own it.

Hot music acts to light up Indian cultural event VICTORIANS and visitors will be treated to an incredible line-up of musical talent at the Indian Summer Festival - a free, three-day community and cultural festival to coincide with the Australia vs India Boxing Day Test in Melbourne at the iconic MCG. The festival will be headlined by international acts Raxstar (UK) and Humble The Poet (Canada), Sydney-based L-Fresh The Lion and Pav Dharia, and Melbourne grown Ecca Vandal. The festival will also feature local emerging artists including Manorism, Sahida Apsara and Dub FX. To be held in Yarra Park outside the MCG, the Indian Summer Festival will showcase the best of modern Indian culture and celebrate Victoria’s vibrant Indian community to foster cross-cultural understanding. The Indian Summer Festival begins on Sunday, December 23 coinciding with the annual Bupa Family Day and will include appearances by the Australian and Indian men’s cricket teams. Live performances by Raxstar, Amin and Hari, Karishma Sadhai and Jay Dabgar Quartet will light up the stage.

The festival will continue over days one and two of the Domain Boxing Day Test. A Sport For All Community champion, Sam Atukorala said, “India and Australia have always been great rivals on the cricket field but great friends off it. It will feature Indian cuisine alongside Indian art and culture and will also provide fans with the opportunity to play cricket, meet some of their favourite cricket stars and enjoy the spectacle of some exhibition kabaddi games.
