Businesses get into Christmas spirit and win By David Lee BUSINESSES in and around Shepparton’s CBD got into the Christmas spirit this year, taking part in the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Christmas Window Decoration Competition. But there could only be two winners. First place was taken out by Sabac on High for their magical Christmas decorations and shop front transformation and second place
Generosity to help sick kids… Paul Archer from Natrad has been working hard collecting batteries and scrapping them over the past six months to help raise $24,640.91 that he donated to GV Health last week. Paul said, “We are looking at setting up another dedicated charity for the hospital. These funds will be split to go toward helping the children’s ward. 20 percent will go toward buying toys and other items for the children to keep them entertained. A bored kid is a sick kid. The other 80 percent will go toward anything else the children’s ward needs like machines and beds. From left, local resident, 8-yearold Isabelle Waser and Paul Archer. Photo: David Lee.

Sabac on High was awarded a $1,000 advertising voucher from 95.3 Triple M and Joe Paul Menswear was awarded a $500 advertising voucher. Sabac on High owner, Chris Wilcox said, “It’s a big job to put our decorations up. It takes

Students join forces with botanic gardens GOTAFE trainers and assessors, Ross Wade and Erin McDowell, as well as GOTAFE horticulture students, came together last week with committee members of the Friends of the Botanic Gardens Shepparton, to celebrate the end of the year. The working relationship, formed in August of this year is between the group and GOTAFE horticulture students and sees them work together for the continued upkeep and expansion of the Australian Botanic Gardens at Kialla. This project was instigated by commercial manager, Robyn Saunders earlier this year. GOTAFE horticulture students propagate seedlings to plant out at the gardens throughout their studies and
have been involved in projects including providing design assistance and special projects. Jill Grant from the Friends of the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton said, “This partnership is absolutely mutually beneficial. The set up for seed propagation at the William Orr Campus is out of this world. “We can’t afford to do that as a committee, nor do we have the manpower to do the work required to maintain it. Working with GOTAFE students will also provide us with design assistance and assist in other projects as they are identified. “We are happy that students will learn from the gardens because we aim to get the community here and students are part of that community and we look forward to working together in 2019.”

Convictions made following discovery of puppy farm A TATURA man has been charged after appearing the Shepparton Magistrates Court following a joint investigation by Greater Shepparton City Council and the RSPCA into the illegal operation of a ‘puppy farm’ over the last two years. The man, who had more than 50 dogs and 20 cats at two properties, was subsequently charged with offences including operating an unregistered breeding business and animal cruelty. The man pleaded guilty in the Shepparton Magistrates Court to failing to conducting a domestic animal business on an
unregistered premise and failing to register the large number of dogs and cats with council. The accused also pleaded guilty to two RSPCA Victoria charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (POCTAA) for failing to provide veterinary treatment for a sick or injured animal. As a result, the accused will not be able to operate a domestic animal business in Victoria for the next 10 years. Manager citizen services, Laurienne Winbanks said the prosecution demonstrated Council’s commitment to protecting the welfare of animals and ensuring compliance with the

Domestic Animals Act 1994. “Council works together with local and state authorities including the RSPCA to monitor domestic animal businesses and any illegally operating puppy farms and cat breeders will be investigated,” Ms Winbanks said. “We strongly encourage the community to report to council or the RSPCA any property in Greater Shepparton that may be breeding dogs or cats or where the welfare of the animals is a concern.” RSPCA Victoria inspectorate team leader, Lisa Calleja said it was a promising outcome.
“We’re happy with this result, because it sends a clear message to the community that anyone wanting to operate a domestic animal business must do so in accordance with the law and ensure the welfare of their animals, which includes the provision of veterinary treatment to any that are sick or injured,” Ms Calleja said. Reports can be made to council by calling 5832 9700, visiting www.greatershepparton.vic. gov.au or emailing council@shepparton.vic.gov. au or can also be made to the RSPCA by calling 9224 2222 or visiting www.rspcavic.org

Don’t become a statistic this holiday season Police will use their new smaller alcohol and drug test buses to target those travelling to and from celebrations in suburban streets and rat runs. All road users will be targeted, including heavy vehicles, light trucks, cars, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians. Drivers are encouraged to reduce their own risks on the road by ensuring their vehicle is roadworthy, practising stop-revive-survive strategies, staying off their mobile phones and being alert on unfamiliar roads.
VICTORIA saw 237 lives lost on its roads last year, with 198 lives lost to date this year, and in Greater Shepparton alone, while there were no fatalities recorded during the December and January holiday periods, there were 41 recorded claims of hospitalisation on our roads. Victoria Police is boosting its presence on the roads over the New Year period, with motorists urged to slow down and get to their celebrations safely. Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Lisa Neville recently launched the Victoria Police Operation Roadwise campaign, where the names and ages of those who have died on our roads this year inscribed on baubles and placed on the Victoria Police lives lost Christmas tree. As part of the operation police will be out in force targeting dangerous driving, drug and drink driving and irresponsible behaviour on our roads.

$7M medical investment to solve doctor shortage students, co-selected collaboratively by both universities, will enter La Trobe’s new three-year bachelor of biomedical science (medical) undergraduate degree delivered at La Trobe University’s Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga campuses. Those who successfully complete the course will then gain guaranteed entry into the University of Melbourne’s doctor of medicine (rural) postgraduate degree, to be based in Shepparton. The selection process will target students with rural backgrounds who are seeking a career as a rural doctor. Both courses will be taught in regional Victoria.
La Trobe University vice-chancellor, Professor John Dewar said the senator’s commitment was a welcome investment in regional communities that would make a real and lasting difference. “The Federal Government has today announced a $7M dollar investment into the strong health, resilience and self-reliance of regional Australians,” Professor Dewar said. “This funding allocation will ensure we can deliver on our long-standing commitment to deliver more locally-trained doctors for rural, regional and remote communities.” From next year a cohort of 15 La Trobe
LA TROBE University has welcomed a $7M investment from the Federal Government to support delivery of a new end-to-end rural medical school in partnership with the University of Melbourne, located in Shepparton and other regional areas including Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga, which is designed to help solve Victoria’s rural doctor shortage. It will deliver the construction and refurbishment of specialist teaching labs in Albury-Wodonga and Bendigo labs, new equipment and the appointment of six new specialist teaching and technical staff at both locations.

Professor Dewar said the university was on track to begin teaching the course from early next year. “Since the initiative was given the green light in May this year, we have worked closely with our collaboration partners, the University of Melbourne, to get this program underway. We’ve had strong interest from schools and students from across regional Australia to take part in this innovative program. Prospective students will soon learn if they’ve been selected for an interview; those who are successful will earn entry to the class of 2019,” Professor Dewar said.

Protection from further water losses MEMBER for Murray, Damian Drum has helped deliver a socio-economic test which will protect the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District from further water losses. The test was agreed to by basin ministers in Melbourne recently, with Mr Drum attending a MINCo meeting. “This announcement has been two years in negotiation and I’m incredibly grateful to the Nationals Federal Minister for Water, David Littleproud,” Mr Drum said. “As part of the Nationals team I’ve had the ear of Federal Water Minister Littleproud constantly and ultimately we’ve been able to put together a deal that secures the future of the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District (GMID). “Being able to bring the Minister to the Goulburn Valley on four occasions has ensured he understands our region and the critical nature of these negotiations. “Importantly, this deal delivers water projects that South Australia had prioritised and will address the health of the lower lakes and the Coorong. This was important to ensure all states benefited from this agreement, so this agreement is now carved in stone. “All states have now agreed any future water efficiency project must have social and economic benefit or detriment tested across the community, not just the participating individual. “The wording and detail in this agreement mirrors what our irrigators and community have been calling for. “I’m so proud to have delivered this for our irrigation farmers who grow more food and fibre than any other comparable part of Australia. We all know water equals wealth and the wealth in the Goulburn Valley extends way beyond the farm gate, to the prosperity of all the cities and towns throughout the GMID.”

Calls for stadium development funding commitment THE Andrews Labor Government is being called on to provide funding towards the planned multi-million dollar redevelopment of the Shepparton Sports Stadium. The project, costed by Greater Shepparton City Council at $37M, will see the stadium transform into an elite event and sporting facility to be known as the Shepparton Sports & Event Centre. The project will see the construction of three new basketball/netball multi-use courts, including a show court with a 3,000 seat retractable grandstand, new wet area amenities, administration hub and carpark. The redevelopment will also provide an economic boon to the local economy by supporting 169 local jobs during construction and generating an additional $12.3M per annum upon completion. Speaking in State Parliament, Member for Northern Victoria Region, Wendy Lovell used the opportunity to challenge Labor to stop ignoring the sporting needs of the Goulburn Valley community and commit funds to help ensure the project becomes a reality. Member for Northern Victoria Region, Wendy Lovell said, “The redevelopment of the Shepparton Sports Stadium is a project that I have advocated for over many years and is long overdue. “The redevelopment will create new jobs for locals during and after construction and will attract events and tourists that will boost the local economy. “I call on the minister to provide a commitment to match the Liberal’s pledge of $15.5M towards the redevelopment of Shepparton Sports Stadium into the first-class Shepparton Sports & Events Centre.”

STAY SAFE ON THE ROADS… From left, Shepparton Search & Rescue Squad member, Alan Male, secretary, Nacole Standfield, GMCU CEO, Melissa Ralph, CFA District 22 operations officer, John Leben and Shepparton Search & Rescue Squad members, Chloe Judd, Jamie Fawcott are urging road users to be safe on the roads. Photo: David Lee.
Safety first: Fatigue & Speed Kills DURING the holiday break, it is important that we all take extra care on the roads to ensure the safety of our loved ones, the wider community and ourselves. Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, SES and CFA have partnered with GMCU, Triple M and The Adviser to launch the annual ‘Fatigue & Speed Kills’ campaign to ensure the welfare of all during the Christmas break. Last year, approximately one person was killed on our roads every day between the start of December and Christmas. This is why drivers are being urged to take a break and stay awake this festive season.
GMCU CEO, Melissa Ralph said, “Doing what we can to keep local families safe on our roads, especially over the holiday breaks, is something the GMCU team are passionate about and why we have continued to run these road safety campaigns along with The Adviser for many years. “ We w ish a l l ou r memb ers a nd communities a very happy and safe festive season.” Locals die on local roads and one death is way too many. Please be patient and take a break when travelling to your destinations during the Christmas and summer holidays.
EXCEPTIONAL ESTATE… From left, Kavant Nominees directors, Willem van Zeist, Lance Woodhouse and chairman, David Fordyce are proud to have been recognised for Kialla Lakes Estate. Photo: Katelyn Morse.
Land development recognised for excellence continued from front page At a function at the Palladium in Crown Casino attended by over 1,000 members of the development industry the judges gave a special commendation in the category of Residential Development to Kavant Nominees Pty Ltd as the developer of Kialla Lakes Estate for the quality and amenity of the Estate which includes the three lakes, playgrounds and parks, about 12 km of walking and cycling paths and an attractive large retention basin to cope with any future rain event. Kavant Nominees Pty Ltd chairman, David Fordyce has expressed his delight that Kialla Lakes Estate has been awarded. “Each year UDIA appoints judges to inspect the quality of the various forms of
land and building development in Victoria. This includes everything from high-rise developments to community and ecological developments,” David said. “This is the second time Kialla Lakes Estate has won an award, having previously won a state award for a master-planned development. The estate has attracted home builders, shops, a retirement village, a medical centre, a child-minding business (which is shortly to be built) and a school has been built on adjoining land. “At present, over 1,300 lots have been sold and further developments are taking place. Mr Fordyce said that the judges’ award gave the board a lot of satisfaction and was also a recognition of the valuable work of the board’s consultants, Chris Smith & Associates.”

Healthy outdoor activity options KEEPING the kids entertained during the break is sometimes a hassle, but thanks to the Greater Shepparton City Council’s Activities in the Park program, outdoor fun is easily attained for all these school holidays. The Activities in the Park program provides an opportunity for local residents and visitors to participate in free and low-cost activities, encouraging everyone to be healthy, active, happy and connected. The program offers many activities that suit a range of ages, abilities, interests and locations. For January and February, there is quite a lot on around the Goulburn Valley for all to enjoy, with events spread across the municipality. Some of the school holiday’s summer activities include scavenger hunts, circus skills and training, kite making, stand up paddle boarding, spotlight walks, orienteering and even movies in the pool. Remember, many of these activities are free, however the activities at the pool require entry. east of Toolamba Road. A lease for the proposed solar farm at the GV Link site east of Toolamba Road has now been negotiated and council is proposing to lease the Land to GVCE Mooroopna Solar Pty Ltd, being a ‘Special Purpose Vehicle’ (SPV) which consists of Goulburn Valley Community Energy Pty Ltd (GVCE) and AKUO Energy Pty Ltd. The proposed lease is for a term of 25 years with an option to extend the lease for an additional 25 years. A Greater Shepparton City Council spokesperson said, “Council officers will now progress to the next stage of the process which consists of advertising council’s intention to enter into a proposed lease with the SPV. The advertisement will take place on January 4, 2019 and will provide the public with 28 days to make public submissions. “It is a requirement of the Local Government Act 1989 that any lease for a period of 10 years or more be advertised under section 223 to allow for any public submissions. “The proposed lease is subject to a number of conditions relating to the planning and

development of the solar farm, which include but are not limited to; obtaining approvals and finance and entering into Power Purchase Agreements (PPA’s) with relevant parties to purchase the electricity generated by the solar farm. “The proposed lease would not commence until the SPV has received all approvals and secured PPAs and obtained the required finance for the project with a financial institution. Rent will not be payable until the lease commences on the commencement date following compliance with these lease conditions. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said that it was positive to see people pursuing renewable energy projects and outlined that renewable energy is a key focus not only across this region, but across the state. “The subject land east of Toolamba Road had been set aside for water detention as part of the future GV Link project and council officers felt that the area north of the proposed water detention basin could be suitable for a solar farm,” Mayor O’Keeffe said.

THE concept design features brightly coloured cladding that wraps around the bridge, the stairs, and the lift cores, suggesting the movement of fruit along a conveyor belt. This holistic design provides a dynamic visual effect which changes according to the viewing angle, while maintaining signal sightlines. To comply with the various requirements of the State Government rail authorities, the construction cost has been estimated at approximately $18,826,500, which would be met by the State Government. Confirmation of the final design to be constructed is set to be determined by the relevant rail authority at the time of the allocation of a budget. As part of the project, the construction of shared pathway links would be constructed, coming to an estimated cost of $4,748,300, which is expected to be met, in part or full, by council. Speaking to the unopposed motion at the recent council meeting, Cr Fern Summer said, “It’s a great project. I have already been contacted by a ratepayer who didn’t think this project is value for money and said that
it cost too much. I can understand that they might think that without looking at the detail. “It is part of our core responsibility to make sure infrastructure and design and amenities are all in line with community expectation and that area where people that are arriving at our town is highly run down, so I am very supportive of it (the project). “We do have many projects at the moment on the go and we are being quite ambitious‌not all of them are funded and obviously this project is still requiring funds but we never know which projects are going to catch the eye of state and federal grants, so we need to be shovel ready with these projects for when things get moving. “Every one of our entrances needs to offer the best first impression to visitors. We invest so much in trying to get people to come to Shepparton so first impressions matter and we want people to keep coming back. “Hopefully these upgrades, once we get moving on them, will increase the number of train commuters which will further bolster our argument for federal funding to increase the number of train services.

By Ash Beks I’V E never seen Santa travel in such style. Standing upright on the back of an unrestored 1933 Ford Roadster-turned ute, the merry man in red turned the heads of children and adults alike when he arrived at the Murchison Carols by Candlelight on the back of this particularly beaut beast. Draped in tinsel and completely covered with rust and dust, Santa’s entrance felt so beautifully and distinctly rural-Australia, I could’ve cried. Audible gasps of excitement could be heard amongst the carollers as they inspected the vehicle. For a moment, it was genuinely hard to tell if the Ute would steal all the attention from Santa himself. Rushworth mechanic, Andrew MacKay, aka ‘Jed Hayback,’ purchased the 1933 Ford Roadster in March 2004 after it had been cut up into a ute. The four-cylinder vehicle can only travel up to 80km/h but

to Jed, that doesn’t matter at all. What’s of foremost importance is that the solar panel works, to power the fridge and can crusher, of course. It’s quite surprising that this thing still runs, what with the severe external disrepair, but the fact that the engine works so well is just a testament to Jed’s handiwork as a mechanic. The ‘unrestored’ vehicle is a rusty mess boldly beaming with charismatic exuberance. It’s got this filthy, punklike, Outback Australian attitude. This vehicle is likely best suited to expansive and dusty spaces, empty acreage with kangaroo and tumbleweed freely roaming. Actually, Rushworth feels like an extremely appropriate home for this Ford, what with the regions lengthy and interesting history and dry, expansive farmlands. It’s worth noting that these kinds of vehicles were invited in Australia in the

1930s. A farmer’s wife from Gippsland wrote to the managing director of Ford at the time, Hubert French, explaining that they cannot afford both a car and a truck. The farmers needed a car to attend church on Sundays and a truck to take pigs to market on Monday; fair enough. Their letter was passed on to a young design engineer who executed the vision for the Ford T ‘Buckboards’ and ‘Utility Roundabouts,’ world-famous vehicles of which Jed’s hodgepodge beast is absolutely inspired by. At the end of the Murchison Christmas Carols, Jed and Santa returned to the rusty ute to bid farewell and Happy Holidays to all. With watery eyes, we watched as Santa sailed off into the sunset, probably unsafe unharnessed on the back cab of Jed’s Ford, a satisfying little slice of humble, wholesome, rural Australiana.

Netball academy coaches and squads released AFL Goulburn Murray has announced the coaching appointments for the newly formed ‘Tatura Milk’ Junior Netball Academy that will commence in February 2019. Shepparton Netball Association Life Member and Goulburn Valley League (GVL) previous A grade player and coach, Ann Austin will be the academy’s director of coaching. Ann comes with a wealth of knowledge both as a player and a coach. Ann has played and captained local teams including City Notre Dame and Shepparton A grade, as well as representative teams which include Regional State League Division 1, State League Championship Division, Country Cup, Country Victoria State Team and All Australian team with many premierships and best and fairest wins along the way. Ann has coached Regional State League sides, Shepparton Netball Association representative teams, 17 and under at Shepparton Football Netball Club and A grade at Shepparton and Tatura Football Netball clubs. Ann is also a Life Member of City Notre Dame Netball Club. She has a current level 1 coaching accreditation and holds a current B
grade umpire badge. Ann has also been involved with school and association-based netball as a committee member, junior convenor, selector, mentor, umpire tester and Net Set Go co-ordinator. New to the region, Emma Clignett will be head coach 13-year-old group. Emma moved to Victoria early in 2018 after relocating from Queensland, where she grew up playing, umpiring and coaching netball at various levels. As a result of playing representative from an early age and having some incredibly influential coaches she decided to step into coaching roles as a teenager. Since then she has coached at club, association, regional, and state levels. In addition to this she has also coordinated coaching programs and was awarded with Volunteer of the Year for Netball Queensland in recognition of her coaching commitments. Since moving to Victoria, Emma has continued her coaching career taking on coaching roles for Euroa, Goulburn Valley Interleague and state titles. Emma is looking forward to sharing her passion for netball with young players and seeing

their growth and development. She believes there is great potential in young players in our region and is looking forward to seeing them flourish. Ashley Bradley will be head coach of the 12-year-old group. Ash has played at Regional State League level and has represented North Central at state titles whilst being an A reserve player. She played A grade in New Zealand, then returned to trial for the Victorian Netball League (VNL), playing for the Sovereigns, as they were a regional team and supported

country netballers and she received the championship coaches award. Ash played for Monash University in the Championship team and played a curtain raiser for Melbourne Vixens on Hisense Arena and again received the championship coaches award. Ash is currently signed with Casey Demons in the VNL in her comeback season after being sidelined in season 2018 after injuring her knee (ACL). Ash will also play A grade with the Shepparton Football Netball club in 2019.
Netballers to benefit from development academy YOUNG netballers in the Goulburn Murray region are set to receive a boost with the commencement of a new Junior Netball Development Academy in 2019. An initiative of AFL Goulburn Murray, the establishment of a Junior Development Academy will benefit individuals, clubs, associations and junior coaches. Key focus areas of the program include quality based player development to support and complement club, league and netball associations, increase the depth of talent within the region by exposing more players to a higher level of training, participation and coaching, influence the behaviour and values of young players by providing a high-quality training and playing environment and to involve and support the personal development of regionally based netball coaches in the program for the betterment of future netball athletes. The Netball Academy program also welcomes Tatura Milk on board as our major partner which will complement their sponsorship of the AFL Goulburn Murray
Junior Football Academy. AFL Goulburn Murray Netball Academy co-ordinators, Melissa Wells and Peita Sleeth are excited about the prospect of growing junior netball in the region. “The aim of the Academy is to ‘connect’ the pathway in a more coordinated manner and to provide a structured and focused development program for the selected participants and coaches,” Melissa and Peita said. “The program will consist of 12 sessions overall at each age group with a focus on skill development, game sense and personal growth. “It is also fantastic to have Tatura Milk on board as partner of the netball academy, becoming the AFL Goulburn Murray Junior Academy partner for both football and netball development in the region.” The program will officially commence in February 2019, with trials having already been conducted in November 2018. “Coaches and selectors were ver y impressed with the high level of skill and effort demonstrated by all players through
trials, which made selection of athletes for the academy extremely difficult,” Melissa and Peita said. “Overall, this is an exciting addition to
the netball community and we are looking forward to a high service being provided to Academy participants through 2019 and beyond.”
