Are you a proud Rat of Tobruk descendant? ANY locals who are a descendant of a Rat of Tobruk are being given the chance to meet and talk with other descendants as part of the only surviving Rats of Tobruk Association in Australia. In World War II, a large number of men from the Goulburn Valley and North East District fought at Tobruk (Libya), during the historic 242 day siege. The men who fought at Tobruk during the siege become known as the mighty Rats of Tobruk and following the war, the Goulburn Valley and North East District had a very active sub-branch of the Rats of Tobruk Association. Due to a reduced number of surviving veterans, the local association closed down, but there is still one association remaining in Melbourne. Rats of Tobruk Association Inc membership officer and proud son of a rat, Mike Kiernan said, “A number of years ago the then surviving veteran members decided to open membership to descendants of Tobruk veterans. Since then our membership has grown to over 500 decedents from across Australia. “There are still a number of original rats who regularly attend our meetings and functions, including our president, Bob Semple. “I would like to encourage any decedents of Rats of Tobruk living in the Goulburn Valley and North East District to consider

EYES ON THE NEXT PRIZE… From left, 17-year-old rally racer, Josh Bohm and his dad, Darren Bohm are hard at work preparing their 1992 Nissan Silva S13 for their next rally. The vehicle is fitted out with a roll cage, suspension and an important internal fire hydrant system. Photo: Ash Beks.
Young rally racer ready for
next endeavour By Ash Beks AT AGE 7, Josh Bohm began getting into racing. He started out young, jutting around full speed on a go-kart, pedal to the floor and instantly out-performing everyone else on the track. Josh’s dad, motoring enthusiast, Darren Bohm, noted his son’s assured fearlessness on the track and how considerably better he performed drifting in wet weather. “This kid’s gonna race,” Darren excitedly told his motoring mates at the time. Later, Josh learned to drive standing up between the door and steering wheel of one of his dad’s fixer-uppers and in a blink of his parent’s eye, Josh was competing in autocross in Mooroopna, at age 14. It’s evident that Josh has racing in his bones and it’s a passion that runs throughout his family. Darren can remember his own dad’s enthusiasm for cars, something evidenced by the array of old and new
Page 12 – The Adviser. Australia No. 1:1439 Wednesday, January 16, 2019
vehicles scattered across their property, including Darren’s first ever car. Just last year in November, Josh became only the third ever junior to be granted an exemption to race in the Victorian Rally Championship. At age 17 and still only holding a learners permit, Josh became the youngest ever person to get such an exemption and was granted permission to race in the Excel Rally Series. With seemingly no concept of going slow or taking it easy, Josh absolutely dominated on the track and became the youngest winner of any series in Victorian rally history, winning outright well before the completion of all heats. Currently, Josh and Darren are still very excited, reeling from the November win. However, their attention has already shifted to the next campaign and the pair is working hard on the 1992 Nissan Silvia S13 featured in these pictures. Dedicating several nights a
week and some weekends to the task, Josh and Darren are enthusiastically working together as father and son toward the next race. Darren said, “Everything Josh has achieved at such a young age is unbelievable. “As parents, we are extremely proud of all his achievements. “I think Josh has a great career ahead of him and we are excited to see how he races in the future. “Nothing would be possible without the help of our sponsors and we would like to say a big thanks to Alan Roe Bosch Car Service, Whiting and Co. In addition,
the Aquamoves splash park is supervised by lifeguards and therefore provides an added level of safety for families using it. “Council will continue to consider splash parks as part of a number of future developments. Club hosts two big start of year tournaments By David Lee THE start of the year saw two big days for the Murchison Bowls Club, with the club hosting both the inaugural Campbells Cup (CC) and the reformed Presidents Cup tournament. On Friday, January 4, 18 teams converged on the club to compete on good grass greens for the inaugural CC. The CC trophy and prize money, sponsored by Campbells Australia, was won by Barry Ibbott’s team from Hilltop Bowls Club with the runner-up being the trio from
Rushworth whose power play of eight shots got them over the last hurdle. Murchison Bowls Club president, Geoff Higgins said, “A couple of new innovations were trialled with great success and bowlers having a lot of good fun and banter.” On the Saturday, the club hosted the Presidents Cup tournament, which is sponsored by WIZZ Coating. Twenty teams competed in cooler but very blustery conditions with the final washout being 5/3 game winners playing off for the coveted trophy and cash prize. Two
teams from Euroa, the Murchison team, Shepp Golf team and Stanhope team played a three end play-off with the Stanhope team of Jenny Crilly, Peter Sherman and Berry Fletcher out-bowling their Euroa opposition of Bill O’ Conner, Peter O’ Connor and Bruce Doherty. Geoff said, “A great day had by all and many thanks to the catering girls and club members who filled in the discrepancy of team numbers at short notice. As usual, Lester did a tireless job as tournament manager.”
