Coincidentally, in its 70th year, 70 nominations were sent through for Australia Day Awards in Greater Shepparton.

Celebrations will ring out across the region on Saturday, January 26, with events held in Shepparton, Arcadia, Dookie, Mooroopna, Murchison, Tatura and Toolamba. Thousands wasted as charity bins overflow with rubbish

By David Lee CHARITY bins across the region have been hit hard over the Christmas period and into the new year, with not only thefts occurring, but items being dropped off that are broken or unusable, costing the ‘op shops’ thousands of dollars to remove.

The Bridge Youth Service’s Revamp Op Shop on Fryers Street may have had a better holiday season compared to last year, but still has to endure costs of up to an estimated between $5,000 and $10,000 each year to spend time removing items that they cannot re-sell. They, among other charity op shops, also continue to be targeted by thieves who take quality items that could be going back to helping the charity organisations and in turn the local community.

Revamp Op Shop manager, Fiona Martin said, “We do get a lot of fabulous donations and we are very appreciative for that.

“This year (the holiday period) seems to have been better than last year, but we’re not sure if that’s because of the theft we’re experiencing.

“In previous years we have had a lot of rubbish dumped in and around our bins, which has been a major issue.

“Christmas in 2017 was the worst. We had damage to our bins and had so much theft and rubbish dumping so we were forced to remove our bins from around the city and only have the ones at our store.

“This year we received some pretty unsanitary items such as dirty, stained linen and soiled underwear as well as broken and unusable bric-a-brac and household goods.

“The saying goes if you wouldn’t give it to a friend, please do not donate it.

“It costs us a fortune in time and money to remove these items and that could be being used elsewhere.

“The biggest thing we can do is ask the community to, if possible, try dropping the donations in-store to us, to prevent against theft.”

Rare opportunity to achieve success

By David Lee TWO Numurkah Secondary College students were given the opportunity to gain new skills and get a first-hand taste of university life and the world of work, through the innovative Doxa University Pathways Program held recently.

Participants in the program came from a variety of challenging backgrounds, each given the chance to develop their personal, professional and employment skills by visiting universities and corporate workplaces across Melbourne CBD including Banker’s Trust and Australian Catholic University.

They also met with professionals from across the not-for-profit sector in a not-for-profit round robin session.

Numurkah Secondary College year 12 student and program participant, Jaimie Cook said, “The Doxa pathways program provided a way to gain friendships with new people from other schools, which was a highlight. I’ve also really enjoyed all the information sessions and how they’ve helped build ourselves and our skills.

“I can now go into workplaces and new situations and use the skills that I’ve learnt on Doxa’s University Pathways Program to get me through.

“Participating in Doxa’s University Pathways Program has helped confirm my desire to be a paramedic in the future.”

Higher education journey begins A NEW intake of students rolled into La Trobe University’s Shepparton Campus last week, as part of the university’s Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) main offer round.

This year, students have again shown strong interest in La Trobe University’s career-ready courses, including cybersecurity and commerce.

It’s also the first intake of students taking part in La Trobe’s new three-year bachelor of biomedical science (medical) undergraduate degree delivered at the university’s Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga campuses. Those who successfully complete the course will then gain guaranteed entry into the University of Melbourne’s doctor of medicine postgraduate program, based in Shepparton, which is hoped will help to solve Australia’s rural doctor shortage.

GREATER Shepparton has experienced an events boom for January, with an influx of thousands of visitors for a number of significant major events.

Making a start to the year Greater Shepparton hosted the Cricket Australia Country Championships for women and men. The fixture included players from across Australia as well as international teams, who played across seven local host venues over 10 days, contributing in excess of $750,000 to the region’s economy.

The year has also started off with a number of significant tennis events forming part of a broader festival of tennis for the city.

Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club hosted the GV Junior Tennis and AMT Championships in the first week of January with more than 400 players converging on the region. Tennis Seniors Australia followed and has been in town for the past fortnight for the Australian Teams Carnival and Australian Individual Championships.

With more than 1,000 visitors experiencing all that the region has to offer, the festival of tennis has seen a benefit to the region of in excess of $1M. On January 7, Undera Park Speedway drew a crowd of more than 1,000 visitors for the third round of Australian National Solo Championships.

Rounding out major events for January will be the influx of visitors to Tatura Park over the week for the iconic International Dairy Week. Maude Street works begin INITIAL construction works on the Maude Street amenities, plaza and bus interchange redevelopment have kicked off, with changed conditions in the area expected until the first stage’s completion in six months time.

The Public Amenities building will be the first construction activity to commence. This facility includes male and female toilets, unisex toilets, an accessible adult change room, a parent’s room with areas for breastfeeding, a toilet and baby change tables.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure, Phil Hoare said, “We are aiming to have the Public Amenities building completed by mid-year which will provide the community with these much needed modern facilities in this area.

The adjoining landscaped plaza area will also greatly enhance the amenity of this area and I believe the community will be pleased with the end result when works are complete.”

The plaza area, streetscape and bus interchange works will also begin in the coming weeks.

“It’s great to have two local contracting firms working on this great project,” Mr Hoare said.

Possible parking jobs loss continued from front page In the Shepparton CBD there are approximately 1,137 metered, on-street parking bays, 457 time restricted on-street parking bays and 260 ticketed off-street parking bays with five local officers currently employed to enforce parking laws.

On a Facebook post on the ‘Shepparton Silent No More’ page, where the information on the matter was brought to public attention, Greater Shepparton City Council’s, Cr Fern Summer commented, “Locals will obviously still be employed because they’re not likely to commute from Melbourne for a job like that.

“Staff have a 14 day consultation process to negotiate their terms.

“This is an operational matter and fines will still be reduced with our electronic payment system and extra areas for free off-street parking.

“Admittedly, we should have been more on the front foot in breaking the news so it didn’t

wind up on a page like this,” Cr Summer said.

“As part of the review relates to individual employment arrangements it is imperative for council to respect the confidentiality of any potentially impacted staff, so limited information can be provided regarding this matter.”

This advice stated that employees in the City of Greater Shepparton parking team may be impacted by the review of the service, and claimed putting the service out to public tender is the best decision for council.

Australian Services Union (ASU) executive president, Billy King said the council is denying a final decision has been made but the ASU has serious concerns that the consultation process is not genuine and this decision is a fait accompli.

“The City of Greater Shepparton is making

the jobs of dedicated council employees insecure and that is bad for the whole city,” Mr King said.

“The ASU has serious concerns that the City of Greater Shepparton has not met its obligations to employees.

“Because of our serious concerns, the ASU has put this matter into formal dispute under the Best Value and Consultation clauses of the Greater Shepparton City Council Enterprise Agreement 2017,” Mr King said.

The ASU has formally requested a meeting with the City of Greater Shepparton about the proposal to tender out jobs at the city.

WITH the temperature reaching into the 40s and lasting for several days, it is important that you look after yourself and others to help prevent or treat heatstroke.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition in which the body overheats when it can no longer maintain a healthy temperature. The high body temperature in heatstroke can lead to organ damage.

You can avoid heatstroke by taking precautions in very hot weather.

What is heatstroke?

• Heatstroke occurs when a person’s body temperature rises from about 37°C to above 40.5°C. It is sometimes called hyperthermia.

• Heatstroke needs immediate first aid to lower the body temperature as quickly as possible.

• Dehydration and heat exhaustion are milder types of heat-related illnesses.

What causes heatstroke?

• Heatstroke is caused by prolonged

exposure to heat. You can get heatstroke inside or outside. You can get it exercising in the heat.

You are more likely than others to get heatstroke if you are: • Over 75 or very young • Pregnant or breastfeeding • Overweight • Living alone, homeless or lacking social support • Working or exercising in hot conditions • Affected by chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes • Taking certain medications

Heatstroke symptoms The signs and symptoms of heatstroke include: • Rapid pulse and fast, shallow breathing • Trouble speaking, slurred speech • Problems concentrating or coordinating movements • Aggressive or strange behaviour • Dizziness, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness • Sudden rise in body temperature

• Hot and dry and possibly red skin, possibly with no sweat • Dry, swollen tongue • Headache • Nausea or vomiting • Intense thirst

Heatstroke treatment Heatstroke is a medical emergency. If someone has heatstroke call triple zero (000) and ask for an ambulance.

Meanwhile, give the person sips of cool fluid if possible and lay them in a cool shady place.

Lower their body temperature any way you can, for example by: • Removing excess clothing • Sponging or spraying them with water and fanning the damp skin • Immersing them in cool water • Placing cold packs under their armpits or groin, or on the back of their neck If a person with suspected heat stroke is unconscious, place them on their side with their mouth down (to drain any fluid) and the chin up to prevent possible suffocation.

Heatstroke prevention Heatstroke is linked to dehydration, so in hot conditions: • Drink plenty of water – even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid hot or sugary drinks.

• Keep cool – try to avoid direct sun. Wear a hat and lightweight, loose-fitting, cotton clothing.

• Keep your house cool – close windows, shut curtains and blinds, and use air-conditioning if you have it.

• Help others – visit or phone friends, family and neighbours who are more at risk. Keep children cool and give them lots to drink. Ensure pets have plenty of water and shade. Never leave babies, children or animals alone in a car.

• Have a plan – know who to call if you need help, and follow your doctor’s advice if you have any medical conditions.

Postpone or cancel any activities, or reschedule them to a cooler part of the day or a cooler location.

What’s the best way to tackle rough skin and calluses?

Skin cancer and you OUR skin is the largest organ of the body and acts as a barrier to protect the body from injury, control body temperature and prevent loss of body fluids. But even something that does such a good job at helping to protect us, can itself be subjected to serious conditions such as cancer.

What types are there?

The three main types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma. BCC and SCC are also called non-melanoma or keratinocytic skin cancers.

from the shore, the small boat (compared to our cruise ship) was thrown around in the seas.

Somebody says there’s a whale, but no not today, we turn to head back to shore and then all of a sudden we are surrounded by dolphins.

They are everywhere, skimming past us, diving under the boat, they surface and run alongside us, what beautiful creatures they are, we feel lucky to have shared our day with them.

We now have four days at sea as we complete our trans-atlantic crossing, we are headed for Bermuda.

The ship has lots of activities and each night they put on special entertainment in the ship’s Show Lounge.

It’s a huge theatre with seating for around 2,000 passengers, meal times are staggered with ‘first sitting’ guests attending one show and ‘second sitting’ the other, that way they can cater for the whole ship.

The entertainment is excellent, from the ship’s young dancers and singers to special guest entertainers.

Everything from pop to opera is performed and many receive standing ovations, this makes for a great night at sea.

The seas in the Atlantic can be very testing and this is the hurricane season, the first three days are ideal, it’s warm, the sun on the pool deck brings everyone out of their cabins.

All the activities on the ship are in full swing and of course the Bingo is getting a fare bashing with its A$5,000 jackpot prize.

Day four at sea and the sun goes in, the seas begin to rise but the MSC Poesia handles it very well.

Then we hear that a hurricane is heading towards Bermuda and so are we, the Captain comes on the P.A. telling us about the situation, he has decided that Bermuda is not a good place to be, and so we change course and head for the coast of America and a surprise visit to Boston.

What a great city, easy to get around so much history of early America, you can do a walking tour following a red line on the footpaths that takes you to all the major sites.

We visit the site of the Boston Massacre, Paul Revere’s house and hear about the Boston Tea Party whereby today’s value, millions of dollars worth of tea was emptied into the harbour in refusal to pay the English King’s taxes.

It’s only a short taxi ride to Cambridge and the campus of Harvard University; you can go on a guided tour of the campus where many of America’s leaders graduated.

Boston is a fun city and of a night it really comes alive, people in restaurants enjoying themselves but if you are in Boston you have to try the lobsters.

They are large, red and sweet, now there is an art to eating lobster, first you have to put on the bib, yes around the neck it goes and you are ready.

The restaurants arm you with a device akin to something you crack nuts with at Christmas and a small fork, then you are into it, lobster everywhere but mainly in your mouth.

Mmmmmm then there are oysters and that clam chowder soup, now the Americans are known as big eaters, well that night we joined them.

Leaving Boston the MSC Poesia set sail for our final destination, one night at sea and next morning we arrived in New York, well what a hell of a town, it’s like the universe on steroids.

24/7 it’s full on, Broadway, Times Square, Central Park, Macy’s, it’s all there, The traffic is incredible, they say you can walk across the city in one hour, but by bus or cab it takes one and a half hours, the traffic is so heavy.

The underground is good, and if after a hectic day of sight seeing you want to relax, then go to Central Park where you can laze back in a grand horse drawn carriage and clip clop through the restful greenery around you.

Also in Central Park is ‘Strawberry Fields’ dedicated to the memory of John Lennon, it’s right opposite the building where he lived with Yoko Ono until that day he was gunned down. At Strawberry Fields there are seats set under the cool trees where people of all ages just sit in silence and look at the plaque on the ground with a single word “Imagine”.

The best way to get around New York is on the ‘Hop on Hop off’ bus for about $60 dollars you can purchase a two day pass which will take you everywhere, including Manhattan and Wall Street, Harlem, Soho, Grenache Village, Brooklyn and there is a free ferry that takes you to Staten Island right under the nose of the statue of Liberty.

On leaving New York, I was impressed at the JFK airport, they have a curbside check in. The cab pulls up to the curb and your

bags are unloaded right onto the scales to weigh them and you are issued with boarding passes before you even enter the airport, very efficient but they say to give the attendant a good tip, just to make sure that your bags end up on the right plane.

First classes will soon be underway from Monday, February 4 and girls and boys aged three upwards eligible to enrol. Police make arrests following local drug seizures SHEPPARTON Divisional Tasking Unit officers arrested two men and seized over 300 cannabis plants last week after executing drug warrants in Kialla, Mooroopna and Moe. Investigators executed a warrant on Gordon Drive in Kialla on Thursday afternoon at 2:30pm where they allegedly located over 100 mature cannabis plants growing in a sophisticated hydroponic set-up.

A 40-year-old Sunshine man was arrested at the address and has been charged with traffic and cultivate a commercial quantity of cannabis. He was remanded overnight and appeared at the

Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

A second warrant was executed on a Mooroopna house on Kalimna Drive just after 7am on Friday where officers located approximately 100 mature plants.

As part of the operation, a third warrant was executed in Moe by Morwell Divisional Response Unit officers on a Rubery Street address on Friday where approximately 130 cannabis plants were allegedly located.

Of f icers a rrested a 23 -yea r- old Sunshine man at the address who was interviewed by police.

Join in the physical and mental fitness revolution FOR the New Year, embark on a journey to find the power of physical and mental fitness, combined with disciplines you may have only dreamed of.

At Shepparton’s Koryo Taekwondo Centre, students receive expert training from 2011 Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist and eight times Australian champion, Sammy Rachele.

With classes taking place five-days-aweek, Monday to Friday, students can expect to find new skills and achieve the physical and mental strength to get the most from what they put in.

Instructor, Sammy Rachele said, “Our classes centre around the combination of

discipline, physical fitness, mental health and respect.

“Taekwondo can be characterised by unity: the unity of body, mind, and life.

When you do Taekwondo, you should make your mind peaceful and synchronize your mind with your movements, and extend this harmony to your life and society.”

Mooroopna Cricket Club hosts Kym Sugars Cup TEN years after the first event held, Mooroopna Cricket Club has again honoured a club legend, hosting its now bi-annual Kym Sugars Cup Day on Sunday.

An intra-club T20 game took place in memory of the former club premiership captain, Kym Sugars.

This year was extra exciting as it also honoured Sugars’ 60th birthday, which would have been in April.

Club president, Aaron DiFede said, “This is a great time that we can get around the club and celebrate a great player and mate from the club.”

The club has been hosting this in conjunction with local charity organization ‘Leading From Within’ since the inception of this day back in 2008/09.

The event pits club legends against players of the current generation of Cats in a Twenty20 game of the President’s XI and the Captain’s XI. This year saw both captains, Aaron DiFede and Sam O’Brien take to the field for the first time in such a great event.

With Brodie McDonals and Michael Coad opening the batting for the Captains XI, the Captains XI won by 13 runs after winning the toss and electing to bat.

Tape it, make it, break it

LOCAL residents had the chance to create some enormous art in the Maude Street Mall on Monday as part of Greater Shepparton City Council’s Activities in the Park.

The Tape It – Collaborative Drawing workshop

by Melbourne artist, Briony Barr utilises electrical colour tape to create large-scale drawings.

The collaborative piece featured efforts by man in the community; locals and visitors, young and old alike. Once completed, all of the electric tape used in the piece is collected and bundled up into a giant colourful ball of tape. This giant tape ball is then neatly cut in half and presented on its own as a separate piece art.

All cultures come together for community cup

A Sport for All community champion and Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District strategic engagement coordinator Goulburn Region, Sam Atukorala said, “We will have a jumping castle and entertainment for kids and barbeque lunch (gold coin donation) for everyone.

“The match has been such a success over the years. Everybody loves to play cricket

and it provides a way to connect the whole community regardless of culture.

“We have a lot of support from the whole community and there is no limit to who can be involved.”

Shepparton Police multicultural liaison, Matt Walker said, “We played our first Blur Ribbon cricket match in 2013, but the Shepparton Police have been involved in other community cricket and sporting events, such as shooting and soccer, for many years.

“It’s all about community inclusion and raising awareness for the Blue Ribbon Foundation.”

The game will run on Sunday, February 24 at Victory Park (St. Georges Road, Shepparton).

SNAPSHOTS OF SHEPPARTON’S PAST

Excelsior Vineyard ONE of the primary industrialists to come to Mooroopna in the 1800s was Trojano Darveniza. Born in 1838 to Austrian parents in Dalmatia (now a part of Yugoslavia), Trojano came to Victoria during the gold rushes in the 1860s. After some success, he secured 320 acres of land in Mooroopna in 1871 to establish a vineyard and winemaking business.

By 1890, Excelsior Wines was a well-established business with over a hundred acres of land under vines. Stocking Shiraz, Cabernet, Mataro, Muscat, Chasselas, Pedro and Riesling, the business became quickly acclaimed as a notable force in Victoria’s exporting industry, with cellar storage rising to 60,000 gallons.

Between 1888 and 1897, the Darveniza wines and spirits were exported across the world and won for Australia over 300 prizes, including nine championships, 18 special gold, five silver and five bronze metals in European cities. During his impressive tenure as one of Victoria’s chief wine-makers, Trojano Darveniza was also elected a member of the Grand Jury of France.

Another fascinating aside about this now-defunct vineyard regards the familiar labelling printed on its bottles. The Exclesior Wines trademark, pictured here in colour, bares remarkable similarity to the official Australian Coat of Arms.

copied the Mooroopna vigneron’s design, registering it officially some twenty years after Excelsior Wines. A good yarn, for sure, but in reality, this legend has been unable to be verified by official documentation and remains likely a tattletale.

Trojano Darveniza never married but the winery was passed along the line to his nephews on his brother’s side.

Eventually, the winery ceased to function by the late 1970s and the old buildings and equipment has fallen into disrepair.

The Excelsior Avenue site is currently listed as being of heritage inventory significance, with the Victorian Government noting that the site and buildings have high significance with regional industry, prominent people and ethnic groups.
