By David Lee THIS weekend, something quite special will be kicking off at the Shepparton Motor Museum, an inaugural month long Motor Mechanika event and the celebration of the museum’s 7th birthday.

The Motor Mechanika event will run from February 17 to

March 17 and will see 30 local businesses hold stalls and exhibits across various elements of the motoring sector including engine displays, parts and accessory displays, vehicle restorations, sandblasting trucks and even speedboats.

High Street pedestrian crossing installation

By David Lee FROM Friday this week, VicRoads will be installing a signalised pedestrian crossing on High Street between Maude Street and Corio Street.

The works, which are part of VicRoads and Greater Shepparton City Council’s $1.2M Shepparton Pedestrian Improvements Project are expected to be completed by April and will see the installation of lights between two sets of traffic lights that are just over 200m apart.

During this work, temporary lane closures on High Street may

take place and speed restrictions will also apply, with minor delays possibly experienced.

Regional Roads Victoria acting regional director, Nathan Matthews said, “We know that pedestrians are our most vulnerable road users, that’s why we’re providing safer crossing options in the busy and growing Shepparton CBD. “This crossing will give pedestrians a safe place to cross, with the lights acting to slow down drivers including B-Doubles.

“We’re working with Greater Shepparton City Council to make it safer and easier for pedestrians to get from A to B.”

By David Lee STORIES about going against all odds and coming out victorious are always inspiring, and that kind of story is exactly what scored local Undera farmer, Izaac Dwyer a sponsorship to the Australian Dairy

Conference in Canberra.

Sponsorship recipients were selected based on their applications in which they wrote about an experience in the dairy industry they considered to be ‘Bold, Brave or Brilliant,’ also the theme of this year’s

conference.

Mr Dwyer, who moved from the western districts to northern Victoria after buying a farm in September, wrote in his submission of trialling a grazing corn instead of traditional maize for silage.

Izaac said, “Before the water prices skyrocketed, we weighed up what we were going to do. When we got the corn crop seed, everyone said we were mad.

“It didn’t take long for it to start growing and before we knew it, the crop was hip to shoulder height…all without fertilizer.

“I am looking forward to learning what I can at the conference and implementing anything I learn back here.”

Georgia Mundy from Cobram was also offered a sponsorship to the event.

Herd manager in the family business, Georgia wrote about undertaking an irrigation infrastructure upgrade to improve water use efficiency on their farm. Despite planning from the spring of 2017, seasonal conditions combined with feed prices have posed a challenge to the business but she remains positive about the longer term benefits.

“Even though it’s been a difficult project, we are looking forward to the increased productivity that it will bring,” Georgia said.

Both recipients will be supported to attend the conference in Canberra from February 19 to 21 where they will be joined by other young farmers from across Australia.

New cohort to be inspired

By David Lee A GROUP of 25 will be taking on a range of activities and events set to challenge, inspire and engage them as they take part in the 23rd Fairley Leadership Program.

Launched last Friday, the new cohort heard from special guest speaker, Committee for Greater Shepparton chair, Rob Priestly with this year’s participants eagerly looking forward to the 12 regional issue themed seminar days, three skills based days and study tours to Canberra and Melbourne that await them.

Fairley Leadership Program program facilitator, Sandy Gunn said, “The success of the Fairley Leadership Program in already producing 550 graduates, who are contributing positively to the Goulburn Murray region is due largely to the support the program receives from the Goulburn Murray community.

“We are delighted the Greater Shepparton City Council hosted this year’s Fairley Leadership Program launch.

“The new cohort will experience over 120 speakers. It is a marvellous opportunity to listen to and engage with the people who have shaped our community and who are certainly profound in their different styles of leadership,” Sandy said.

2019 program participant, Amy Marshall said, “I am looking forward to the year and learning more about topical issues within the Goulburn Valley and getting a good handle on those.

“I think the program will be a big challenge this year. Already it has forced all the participants outside the comfort zone, which is really the only way that all of the participants can grow.

“We are very lucky to have such a great group of people to share with and learn from this year.”

ACT NOW Dear Editor, As we cower under the record heat conditions, drought over vast areas of the country, massive fish deaths in the Darling River, floods in Queensland and wild fire raging in Tasmanian wildness areas scenarios in accord with long standing climate change impacts-nearly all of us acknowledge that we must act now to save our planet. While there are still a few climate sceptics remaining in politics- the time has well past to dump them and move on.

We all must do more, no matter how minute, to combat climate change impacts.

We must make it the number one priority to question - what we do personally, in our workplaces and in organisations we are involved with -our actions and the impact they have on the planet.

Some of us live really frugal and low impact lives. Unfortunately our overall wealth has led us to live extremely high CO2 emission per capita (nearly the highest in the world). It’s time to question the way we live.

Why do nearly one million Australians go to Bali annually? It is necessary to be married on the Amalfi coast or for that matter some remote Pacific island rather than in your backyard? Maybe the plan to fly to the Maldives for a cup of real coffee should be reconsidered!

We are all challenged by this wicked problem but must take action now. To quote

By David Lee IT was a bittersweet moment on Friday last week for local resident, Mathieu Ryan, who sat in the Shepparton Blood Donor Centre chair to give whole blood for the fiftieth time.

With one in three Australians needing blood in their lifetime, and only one in 30 currently donating, Mathieu is encouraging the community to roll up their sleeves and give to help save lives.

Mathieu said, “I started giving blood because I thought it would be a good way to give back, but when discovered I was O Negative, which makes me a universal donor, I realised how important my blood type was and so I have continued to make regular whole blood and plasma donations.

“If you are thinking about donating,

I encourage you to go in and do it. It’s not scary, doesn’t take a lot of time and you get a cookie at the end of it. Try to donate at least once…that way you can find out if it’s for you or not.”

Shepparton Blood Donor Centre spokespersons said, “The Shepparton Blood Donor Centre needs around 90 additional blood donors over the next four weeks.

“Many people think road accidents are the primary reason someone may need blood, however cancer patients and those with blood disorders use around 35 percent of all donated blood.

“Blood and plasma donors are always needed.”

By David Lee ALMOST 1,500 athletes from clubs in Victoria and NSW took to Lake Nagambie over the weekend to battle it out on the water as part of this year’s Nagambie Rowing Regatta.

O ver t wo big d ays , pa r t icipa nt s competed in 132 events in front of a 2,500 strong crowd, with Nagambie Rowing Club placing fifth in the final of race 40, fourth in the final of race 133, fourth in heat two of race 119, second in heat two of race 154 and sixth in the final of race 175. Nagambie’s fastest time was achieved by the Female D Grade Coxed Quad Scull

who finished race 175 with a time of 4:07.05.

People, their culture and journey celebrated AN amazing wall mosaic that has been created to celebrate a variety of cultures and their unique contributions to our local community is set to be unveiled on Friday at 1pm at the South Shepparton Community Centre as part of the People, their Culture and Journey project.

Shepparton Access and the South Shepparton Community Centre will launch the wall, which has brought together a diverse range of people who were experiencing social isolation due to personal circumstances, culture and disability.

Shepparton Access CEO, Wendy Shanks said, “The project has also resulted in building self-esteem of the participants and now they have the confidence to enrol in a variety of programs at both the South Shepparton Community Centre and at Shepparton Access.

“The launch of the wall mosaic will celebrate the contribution of many people into the finished work and will provide an opportunity for the local community to gather and appreciate the struggle of many in our community to settle into day-to-day life and to become valued members of our community.”

DRIVE-IN cinema is returning to the region, but not in the same capacity you’d expect!

Next Saturday, February 23, children will be given a chance to build their own DIY box car, which they can then sit in to watch a movie on the big screen at the SPC Kidstown ‘drive-in cinema.’

THE long awaited works at the Verney Road, Balaclava Road, Hawdon Street and New Dookie Road intersection have begun, with contractors now on-site locating services and construction works set to follow commencing with works on water mains.

A number of water mains in the vicinity of this intersection must be relocated to allow for its conversion to a signalized intersection that will improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

Lane closures requiring detours through adjacent streets will be in effect for some stages of the works in conjunction with restrictions to on-street parking.

Heavy vehicle detours via Wheeler Street for west bound traffic will be used when required to facilitate works and reduce congestion.

Greater Shepparton Cit y Council Director Infrastructure, Phil Hoare said these works will result in some disruptions and inconvenience however the works are essential to provide longer term benefits for the whole community through improved traffic flow and safety at this busy intersection and to cater for the projected growth in traffic volumes.

“The water main works are a critical component of the pre-work to allow for the upgrade of the intersection.

We are working closely with Regional Roads Victoria, Goulburn Valley Water and local residents and business owners in order to ensure the works are undertaken in the best possible way,” Mr Hoare said.

“We request you take extra care when travelling in the area.”

Tragic rail crash commemorated 50 years on THOUSANDS GATHER TO REMEMBER...

By David Lee LAST week was filled with nostalgia at Violet Town with commemorative events taking place to mark the 50th anniversary of the Southern Aurora Rail Crash.

On February 7, 1969 approximately 1km south of Violet Town, the Southern Aurora overnight express service from Sydney to Melbourne collided headon with a freight train travelling in the opposite direction shortly after 7am. Nine people died, and 120 were injured in the burning entanglement of the high-speed crash.

It was the townspeople of Violet Town, the district and the local emergency services who were pivotal in helping those still living to escape the train wreckage.

They held the fire at bay, smashed windows and pulled passengers to safety.

The clean up took over a month.

As part of last week’s commemorations, the carriage was brought back to Violet Town and installed centre stage in the Southern Aurora Memorial Garden, which was officially launched.

Southern Aurora Memorial Committee member and local historian, Bruce Cumming said, “We were inundated with people from al over Australia. We had about 300 at the vigil service, which was terrific. The museum and art exhibition was completely full.

“For our formal launch of the gardens we had over 1,000 people.

“We had people there who were working on the railways at the time and some who were on the train and some are still struggling hard, many physically and psychologically injured as well.”

AFL Goulburn Murray has announced a brand-new position has become available within the current Administration Centre to continue to grow and develop football in the Goulburn Murray.

Lock 26 closed for maintenance issue

AN issue has emerged at Torrumbarry Wei r’s L o ck 26 wh ich requ i res its immediate closure.

A valve used in the lock’s operation has been identified as faulty with the full extent of necessary repair works yet to be identified.

New funding available for sports clubs LOCAL sporting clubs are being encouraged to apply for the latest round of VicHealth grants, which are now available to help improve opportunities for women, girls and less active Victorians to become more active and improve their health.

The latest round of VicHealth’s Active Club Grants, which are now open, provides two tiers of funding of up to $3,000 or up to $10,000 to community sport clubs to create more opportunities for women and girls and ‘social’ or modified sport options.

Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell said, “This is about making grassroots sports more accessible for community members throughout Northern Victoria, so everyone can get involved in the sports they love.

“We want everyone to get active and embrace a healthy lifestyle, regardless of their age, gender or ability. I know how

hard our local clubs are working so I encourage clubs to take this opportunity to apply for a grant so we can support them to deliver new opportunities to get more people active.”

VicHealth CEO, Jerril Rechter said, “Our research shows many Victorians are not fitting the recommended amount of physical activity into their week.

“Women’s participation in sport is still lower than men’s, and due to many factors, including a lack of time, opportunities and confidence, many women and girls find it hard to get active.”

Students’ brush with football fame

By David Lee STUDENTS from nine schools across the region had a brush with football fame last week when players from the Melbourne Football Club visited the region.

The players, who included Neville Jetta, Jeff Garlett, James Harmes, Tim Smith, Clayton Oliver, Guy Walker, Jake Lever, James Jordon, Joel Smith and Corey Maynard, hosted super clinics, where children took part in Q&A sessions, leadership discussions, talks on a day in the life of an AFL player and school yard walks.

The players visited St Brendan’s Primary School, St Georges Road Primary School, Wilmot Road Primary School, Guthrie Street Primary School, Orrvale Primary School, Wanganui Park Secondary College, Notre Dame College, Mooroopna High

School and SEDA. While awaiting the arrival of players, Jake Lever and James Jordan, students at Guthrie Street Primary School were treated to highlights of a 2018 game between Geelong and Melbourne.

Students were given the chance to ask the players questions with one asking why the duo started playing football.

Jake said, “I started because all of my friends were playing and I fell in love with it.”

The players were then asked if they could change clubs, where would they go, with both Jake and James saying that if they could they would go to Sydney as they both barrack for them.

By David Lee MORE than 1,100 players have taken to the tennis courts across Shepparton and Mooroopna this week to take part in Tennis Victoria’s Country Week competition.

Being the second time the event has been held in the region, competitors from across 192 teams are currently playing off for the chance to lift a trophy in one of the 23 grades on offer.

At the event kick-off on Monday five new Country Week Legends were also announced, including local Kyabram resident, Greg Tarrant.

Greg said, “I am very excited and honoured to have been awarded. It means a lot to have people nominate me for such an award.

“I have been playing tennis since I was 10 years old and have been taking part in the country week tennis events since 1976 and have only missed two.

“It ’s a n a m a z i ng event a nd i s something you won’t see anywhere else in Victoria. It’s very well run.”

TENNIS LEGENDS… Local Kyabram resident, Greg Tarrant has joined over 1,100 tennis players to take part in Tennis Victoria’s Country Week competition this week and to top it off, Greg was one of five to be announced as a Country Week Legend.

Shepparton’s Melbourne Country Week squad announced CRICKET Shepparton has announced its Melbourne Country Week (MCW) Squad for the 2019 carnival that is set to kick off this coming Monday with the team facing Ballarat Cricket Association.

The squad this year is lead by Mooroopna batsman, Will Hale who is in his first year of organising the squad as a co-director of Representative Cricket along with Old Students opening batsman, Nick Breslin.

The squad consists of captain, Will Hale, wicketkeeper, Luke Nolan, Joel Brett, Michael Eckard, Sam Kershaw, Scott Richardson, Brendan Scott, Roman Walker, vice-captain, Dwain Vidler, Sam Nash, Corey Hickford, Michael Archer, Mitch McGrath, Jayden Armstrong, Nick Breslin and Dylan Grandell.

“The aim this year is to return to the provincial grade after coming ever so close

last year,” Hale said.

Eight players, join seven seasoned MCW veterans in the week from February 18 to 22 at various venues around Melbourne.

“It has been a great reward to a number of players that have worked really hard throughout the season thus far,” Hale said.

“We really have a good blend of experience and youth, both locally and down at Melbourne.”

Cricket Shepparton will play Ballarat, L at robe Valley and L eongatha and District Associations on the first three days of competition in the green side of the competition before playing a cross over match with the gold side of the competition, potentially setting up a showdown with either Goulburn Murray Cricket or Murray Valley Cricket, on the Thursday, before the final on Friday.
