Shepparton Festival tickets available now PREPARATIONS are well under way for the commencement of the enormous and exciting 2019 Shepparton Festival. Next week from March 15, the Goulburn Valley will come alive with three weeks of arts,

culture, food and community.

Following a stacked set of events last year, this year’s festival promises to be bigger than ever before, with 60 events planned over 17 days. Throughout the

festival there will be a wide range of entertainment and creativity available for the whole family, including sculpting, painting, food events, theatre, live music, talks and so much more.

A colourful success at Stanhope

By David Lee THERE was a lot of colourful fun had at the weekend to help launch the Stanhope Football Netball Club 2019 season, with the club organising a special family fun colour run event.

Approximately 80 children and their families from Shepparton, Kyabram and Stanhope attended the evening, where children had the chance to run a specially made 1km colour run circuit that left from the club rooms and included an obstacle course full of hay bales, tyres, water and colour bomb points. There was also handball, relay events, tug of war and more family fun activities.

Event organiser, Kerrie Gray said, “Being such a small town we’re reliant on drawing families to our club to fill the team and events like this help to do just that.

“We were blown away with the support we had for the event. It worked really well. The kids just embraced it.

“We let the kids do as many laps as they wanted and we had some enjoy it so much they did three or four laps.

“When you have a good night like that it’s quite energising.”

Uniting elderly and youth project given wheels

By David Lee THE I Wish I’d Asked (IWIA) project has just been given wheels, with Prestige Jayco, Keatings Transport, Furphy Foundry, Wanganui Park Secondary College and Shepparton Villages putting their skills together to launch a special ‘story van’ last week.

The caravan was designed by 15-yearold students, Alice Potter, Arnie Forster and Charlotte Collins from Wanganui Park Secondary College, who are featured in the decals that adorn the van, alongside Cynthia Poole and Jack Thewlis of Shepparton Villages’ Banksia Lodge.

The artistry depicts an ageing tree on the left of the vehicle with the seniors being pulled through a portal by the students, who are helping to rejuvenate them and on the far right is a tree full of life.

IWIA co-founders, Eva Gruen and Danny Finley said, “We are so grateful to Ken and his family from Keatings Transport, John Spence at Prestige Jayco and Sam Furphy of Furphy Foundry, as well as the students at Wanganui Park Secondary College for their involvement in helping make the van possible.

“Notre Dame College is coming on board which will see us reach this year’s target of getting 100 students involved, but in the long term we are hoping to get every school

Council awards contract for SAM build and approves solar farm DURING a special council meeting held last week, Greater Shepparton City Council councillors awarded the contract for the new Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) build to Kane Constructions PTY LTD, moved the motion to agree to the new budget of over $50M and agreed to enter into a lease agreement for a new solar farm.

Council advertised under Section 223 of the Local Government Act its intent to enter into a lease agreement for a proposed solar farm at the GV Link land east of Toolamba Road and the railway line in Mooroopna. This land had been set aside for water detention as part of the future GV Link project and council officers recognised an opportunity that the area north of the proposed water detention basin could be suitable for a solar farm.

Following the meeting last week, council will enter into a lease agreement for the land with GVCE Mooroopna Solar Pty Ltd, for a term of 25 years with an option to extend the lease for an additional 25 years.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said it was positive to see continued investment in renewable energy projects.

“Renewable energy initiatives support the ongoing sustainability of Greater Shepparton, local businesses, industry and jobs,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

Following a two staged procurement process for the SAM build, five submissions were received and evaluated, with two tenderers progressing to a shortlisting stage, with Kane Constructions being recommended as the preferred contractor.

During the tender evaluation process it was identified that bids received were above the adopted build budget, with bids ranging from $47.3M to $51.7M (including GST). The difference between the estimated cost versus market value of the build of the new SAM has been attributed to an acute increase in the price of construction materials, in particular concrete and steel, due to significant generational construction works currently being undertaken across the state.

“With more than $100B worth of new roads, rail lines, hospitals, multi-storey buildings, wind and solar farms and other infrastructure being built in Victoria, a consequence of the boom is large scale demand for materials, especially concrete and steel,” Mayor O’Keefe said.

“And unfortunately this leads to unanticipated cost escalation for large scale projects such as the new SAM. The reality therefore is that the high demand from major infrastructure projects has pushed up prices of these materials which was not expected.”

Construction works on the new SAM are set to begin this month.

By Ash Beks AN ENIGMATIC young local will be back flipping, tumbling and juggling all the way to Sweden this week to teach circus skills in an afterschool program.

Shepparton ACE College student-turned-mentor, Adam Eleftheriou, will take his talent to Orkelljunga, Sweden for six months teaching as part of the IFALL (Integration For All) program. IFALL was founded in 2013 as a program for students to utilise drama and creativity for social change and has built an extended network with municipalities, schools and youth centres.

When asked about his adventures overseas, Adam seemed surprisingly calm.

“I’m pretty excited, but kind of unusually relaxed about the whole thing,” he explained, “I’ve had so much great opportunity and experience here at Shepparton ACE, so I feel confident in going other to help others.”

Adam and other Shepparton ACE College students are training in circus as part of their Certificate III in Community Dance, Theatre and Events.

Big day on the green for charity

By David Lee ANOTHER day of success was seen last week, when 92 participants took to the green for the Rotary Club of Shepparton Central’s annual Charity Golf Day, which helped to raise in excess of $25,000.

23 teams of four gathered at the Shepparton Golf Club to enjoy a day on the green and be treated to breakfast, lunch and a raffle, with entertainment provided by special guest and Australian ex-cricketing legend, Wayne Phillips all of which raised funds for GV Health.

Some $18,000 of the funds raised is set to go toward several educational scholarships in nursing across GV Health.

Golf Day chairman, Rob Kelly said, “This year we saw more raised than last year which is fantastic.

“Everybody had a ripper day. We even had a pancake hole where we had rotary members making pancakes for players teeing off at that hole.

“We’d like to thank our 20 volunteers and our major sponsors Quicklift, Audi/Darryl Twitt and Specsavers for their support this year, as well as the Good Guys who was one of many who provided a prize for the raffle.”

A journey through time and identity

By David Lee A CAST of 25 local youths is preparing to take to the stage to take the audience on a journey through time and finding identity, when the contemporary dancing performance arrives at Riverlinks WestSide on March 23 and 24.

The cast of the I AM performance is made up of students, past and former, aged 12 to 30 from Wanganui Park Secondary College, Goulburn Valley Grammar, Shepparton Christian College, Notre Dame College and a few graduated students.

The choreography is based on identity through the lenses of our past, present and future as well as the unique journey of finding yourself and your identity. I AM explores the issues of self-worth and transforming the negative voices from within through contemporary dance, challenging the audience to accept their purpose, culture

and belonging.

The performance sees scenes of the natural environment contrasted with the modern, industrial world. This 45 minute performance explores our struggles within the modern world through contemporary dance.

Wanganui Park Secondary College year 11 student, and the show’s assistant choreographer, Abbigail Makin said, “I have always loved choreography so to have this experience has been an honour and a good opportunity to showcase and develop my skills.

“The bond that has been created across the cast has been special.

“I think all the performers have done a great job and it will be a show not to be missed.”

THE top 32 U14 boys and 32 U14 girls basketball teams are set to take to the Shepparton basketball courts in April for the 2019 U14 Countr y Championships, each vying for the chance to go on to compete in the U14 National Championships in October.

It is expected the championships will attract around 2,000 people to the Greater Shepparton area over the three-day event, which includes athletes, team staff, referees and spectators, bringing with it an expected $2M economic injection.

The event will commence on Saturday, April 6 and conclude on Monday, April 8 with the championship and divisional finals. Games will be played at the Shepparton Sports Stadium as well as Mercy Stadium at Notre Dame College and Visy Community Centre at Wanganui Park Secondary College.

Defending champions, Warrnambool Boys and Wodonga Girls will be back looking to reach the same heights and demonstrates excellence from their groups.

Basketball Victoria Country general manager, David Huxtable said, “BVC recognises Shepparton basketball and their band of volunteers can conduct a great event and each team and athlete will be well looked after.

“The city (Shepparton) caters well for its visitors and has numerous attractions and activities, for parents, siblings and friends to explore and discover the diversity of this region, whilst the championships are being conducted.”

Enjoy ‘A Good Yarn’

By David Lee I FIND it fascinating the different techniques and materials you can use to make something in a textile format, and you have the chance to not only check out some of the amazing works created by talented individuals but you can get involved in a range of workshops in the upcoming A Good Yarn exhibit and workshops.

Run by the Shepparton Textile Artists Inc (STA), pieces are made using a range of materials including chord, scraps of fabric, leaves, bark, twigs, silk paper and a variety of other materials.

But what is more captivating than the materials is the wide range of techniques used that create stunning masterpieces…some that you just wouldn’t believe. Artists make a range of items using indigo dyeing, hand stitching, machine stitching, rope making, bookmaking, linocut printing on fabric, eco printing, basket making and beading techniques to name a few.

STA president, Judith Roberts said, “The title gives a lot of scope for interpretation.

“Some artists will focus on yarn as something with which to stitch, weave, knit, or dye. Others will concentrate on the idea of a yarn as storytelling.

“People who attended previous exhibitions and workshops have always been highly enthusiastic.

“Their works are so different and are all quite amazing. There will be 2D and 3D pieces, so will not disappoint.

Saputo commits $65,000 for pavilion A COBRAM Community Soccer Pavilion is set to be installed at Cobram Apex Park, following a recent announcement that Saputo would commit to providing $65,000 toward the project.

Saputo’s contribution, together with that of the Moira Shire Council, the Federal Government and the Victorian Government will secure the much-needed improved facilities for the Cobram community, with $50,000 going toward infrastructure and $15,000 being provided to Cobram Roar Football Club over three years.

The new 664m2 community pavilion will sit adjacent to the existing Cobram Stadium and provide facilities for both players and spectators. Comprising unisex, fully accessible change room facilities, administration facilities for game day officials, as well as improved playing surfaces, the project will allow for increased participation and usage all year.

Saputo Inc. chairman of the board and chief executive officer, Lino A. Saputo, Jr. said, “We are delighted to be contributing

to the wellbeing of the Cobram community by supporting the development of this sporting facility. We are constantly evaluating new projects to encourage residents of communities where we operate to adopt healthy lifestyles.”

“With 260 registered soccer players on AWFA match days, 290 Cobram Junior Soccer Association registered players and 80 plus volunteers there has been increasing demand for more space and better facilities for soccer in Cobram,” Cr Mustica said.

“I commend and thank Saputo for supporting such an important project in Cobram which will enhance the participation of sport for the whole region. This multi-use facility will cater to soccer, but also many other sports played at the precinct, including basketball, netball and cricket.”

Women rev up historic vehicles for third annual RACV Florence Thomson Tour TWO-HUNDRED women are set to hit the road in a range of historic vehicles to take on the 110km RACV Florence Thomson Tour, which kicks off at the RACV Cobram Resort on April 27.

Running for the third year, the tour celebrates the indomitable Florence Thomson, who was the only female entrant in the 1905 Dunlop Reliability Motor contest from Sydney to Melbourne; a 920km journey over what was then essentially a horse track between the two cities. FOR Shepparton man, George Adams, it was an opportunity to see another country and experience a different way of life.

A family friend, Archie Gubbins spends a lot of time in Uganda and works for the clothing company Cotton On who donate funds to build schools in countries like Uganda.

When George heard he was heading back he decided to go with him to experience the lifest yle. They flew into Entebbe then had a five hour drive to Manya where a school has been built. George was taken by the friendliness of the people. Young boys and girls attending the school and the people in the nearby village were so welcoming.

Archie has established a pig farm and the locals help out with the running of it.

They also grow their own produce and have goats, pigs and cattle. Everyone looks well and healthy.

George stayed at the local pa rish church which of fe r s ba sic accommodation. It was good but the local electricity supply tends to come and go so he set himself up with battery operated lights and got used to cold showers.

Back in Shepparton, George started thinking about his Ugandan experience and has decided he wants to go back but this time for up to 12 months.

He will return to Manya and from there explore more of the country and see more wildlife including the mountain gorillas, which Uganda is famous for.

Later he plans to buy a motorbike and explore more of Africa going into Kenya, Zimbabwe and Cape Town. It all sounds like a great experience for a young man, an experience I will look forward to hearing about when George next returns to Shepparton.

Local karting kids excited for grid

By David Lee EXCITEMENT is bubbling away inside of local resident, 9-year-old Cedah Opie as she anxiously awaits taking to the Grand Prix track later this month as one of this year’s Grid Kids.

Being one of 280 applicants, Cedah is one of 59 who will take to the grid on March 17, but will get a taste of the action a little earlier after having also been invited to attend the launch of the Grand Prix in Federation Square, Melbourne on March 13.

Cedah has been racing karts since she was 6-years-old and is a member of the Goulburn

Valley Kart Club, telling The Adviser that she didn’t know her parents had put the application in.

Cedah said, “I didn’t know so when I found out I had been chosen it was a big surprise.

“I will be standing in the pit lane in front of the drivers for the national anthem.

“I am really excited and looking forward to meeting Daniel Ricciardo.”

Joining Cedah will be local resident, 11-year-old Bree Scouller, who is also from the Goulburn Valley Cart Club.

By David Lee EIGHTY players took to the cricket pitch last week to take part in yet another successful All Abilities Cricket 2019 GV Harmony Cup Invitational.

Following the matches, Westpac presented a cheque for $1,000 to go towards funding the growth of all abilities cricket at the Shepparton/ Youth Club United Cricket Club.

A Shepparton/Youth Club United Cricket Club representative said, “The 2019 GV Harmony Cup Invitational was a huge success.

“In its fourth year, this was our biggest

one yet with 80 players and 40 support staff/ spectators in attendance.

“Congratulations must go to Verney Road School who defeated Shepparton/Youth Club United Cricket Club/Connect GV Wallabies in the grand final.

“Both teams were unbeaten going into the final, although the Wallabies snuck through via a super over against Cobram & District Specialist School.

“Verney Road School were way too good though, winning the final easily.”

Patients hear the mighty roar

Richmond Football Club players, Alex Rance, Connor Menadue, Dylan Grimes, David Astbury, Nathan Broad, Toby Nankervis, Ben Griffiths, Dan Butler, Ivan Soldo, Camdyn McIntosh took the time out to visit patients at GV Health on Friday last week, before their big match against Melbourne at Deakin Reserve at the weekend. The visit was made all the special for one patient and mad Richmond fan, Josef Bela, who had planned to go to the Maude Street Mall to get his Richmond items signed, was teed up to go to the luncheon on Saturday and the game on Sunday, but wound up unwell and in surgical. Josef said, “I’ve been pretty down over the past two weeks, but to have the boys come for a visit is pretty cool.” When asked if he had anything to say to the boys, Joseph said, “Go hard boys. Bring the flag home this year.”

New biomedical students to curb doctor shortage

By David Lee FIFTEEN new students kicked off their Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) last week, which aims to help curb the doctor shortage in rural and regional areas as part of the Federal Government’s Murray-Darling Medical Schools Network.

This innovative new program will provide seven years of training and students who successfully complete a three-year undergraduate Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) course at La Trobe’s Bendigo or Albury-Wodonga campus will gain guaranteed entry into the University of Melbourne’s Doctor Of Medicine postgraduate program in Shepparton.

Included in the 15 are three local residents, Isabella Trevaskis, Ella Sprunt and Gabriella Hill, who say that having the opportunity to practice medicine is a dream come true.

Ella said, “I decided to apply because I have always

dreamed of being a doctor. Before this course was invented last year I was going to go to Melbourne and do three years there and then take the steps to get into medicine but that wouldn’t guarantee I would get in.

“This course is my dream. I get to stay at home and there is a guarantee of getting into medicine.

“I imagine myself working as a GP or in the emergency department for a couple of years before making a decision on any particular interests.”

Gabriella said, “This course, in particular, appealed to me because I like the idea of rural medicine, and medicine in general. I completed work experience in year 10 at GV Health and fell in love with medicine. Being a rural course is fantastic and I am grateful to have been given this opportunity.

“For a long time I was interested in surgery, but this may change after getting an insight into different areas throughout this course.”
