Recognition for significant women

By David Lee THE Welsford 1 and 2 boardrooms at Greater Shepparton City Council offices have taken on new names in recognition of two significant women of the region, the first female councillor, Alice McLeod (dec) and the region’s first female town clerk (CEO), Patricia Smith (Gibson) OAM. Aptly announced on International Women’s Day last week, the idea to rename the rooms came from council’s Gender Equity Strategy and Action Plan.

Patricia said, “I would like to thank council and the committee for this. To be recognised in this way is wonderful.

“I’d like to thank and pay tribute to those people who kept me going as town clerk.”

First born son of Alice, David McLeod said, “This is a very significant moment.

“On behalf of my family I’d like to say thank you. We value this greatly.

“This shows that we are progressing and it’s a good path to be on.”

Family fun day to help sick kids

By David Lee THE community is gearing up for a day full of fun when Dookie comes alive for the towns’ first Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Fun Day and Auction.

Being the Devenish Dookie & District major Good Friday Appeal fundraiser, the event had previously been held in Devenish, but due an increase in volunteer numbers has been moved to Dookie.

The excitement of seeing science in action

By David Lee MORE than 80 secondary students from schools across the Goulburn Valley got a taste of science in action recently, when they took part in a day of activities at the University of Melbourne’s Dookie Campus.

Students spent the day on Tuesday learning from expert scientists and getting the chance to explore the science of agriculture, food and nutritional security.

On offer were hands-on experiences about applying science through presentations on remote sensing for crop and pasture management, 3D groundwater visualisation for irrigation and

sustainability, animal health and welfare, natural resources management and international agricultural development.

University of Melbourne Dookie Campus professor in residence, Timothy Reeves said, “Students attending the ‘Ag Science in Action’ event were in year 11 and 12 and had expressed interest in how they can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable world in their careers.

“The event was a great opportunity to profile students interested in applying agricultural, food and veterinary sciences to solving important challenges and to interview industry, government and university experts on the value of studying these areas.”

Celebrating 20 years of short films RENOWNED as one of the best and longest running short film festivals in regional Australia, Shepparton Shorts Film Festival is this year celebrating 20 years.

This Friday, March 15 from 6pm, the Opening Night Celebration of the 23rd Shepparton Festival ‘Story Bowl’ will be taking place down by Victoria Park Lake. During the celebration, a retrospective screening of some of the best short films over the past 20 years will be shown on the big screen outdoors for the whole family to enjoy.

With over 60 events happening from March 15 to 31, the Shepparton Festival promises to be a mammoth celebration of art, culture and creativity. The Opening Night Celebrations will be

a massive event featuring the outdoor cinema, the lively tunes of the Shepparton Jazz Orchestra and plenty of delicious food truck cuisine available. It is recommended that attendees BYO picnic rug and comfortable clothing for the outdoor event.

By David Lee IT IS clear to see that La Trobe University’s Shepparton campus is in desperate need for an extension, and the government is being called on to fund a planned extension of the building.

Over the last 10 years, student enrolments at La Trobe in Shepparton have increased by 160 percent, with the school currently graduating about 140 students per year, with over 70 percent of those commencing work in regional Victoria.

Speaking during an adjournment debate in State Parliament last week, Member for Northern, Victoria Wendy Lovell called on the treasurer to give a commitment to provide funding of $5.1M, being the State Government’s share of the proposed $21.4M project.

The planned extension will see the existing four-level building expand south to Stewart Street and the construction of a three-level multideck car park for use by La Trobe University and nearby GOTAFE, accommodating for the university’s estimated 48 percent enrolment growth into the future.

Ms Lovell said, “It is estimated that $17M will be value-added to the Greater Shepparton economy during the construction phase and $5M ongoing post construction, supporting 83 jobs during construction and an additional 49 direct and indirect jobs upon completion.”

La Trobe University Shepparton head of campus, Elizabeth Capp said, “The investment made by the university, federal, state and local governments in construction of the existing campus has been an exceptional success. The building has reached capacity 10 years ahead of forecast and has the potential to grow significantly. It is straining to cope with 2019 enrolments, likely to continue in light of projected increases in demand.

“Funding an extension to our campus building will ensure that La Trobe Shepparton students have the best possible experience, that we further expand and diversify our teaching programs to meet local demand and workforce needs and that we can develop greater research capacity and outputs in partnership with local industry and regional organisations.

“At present our ability to pursue these goals is constrained by infrastructure limitations.”

Nagambie local taking to skies for national championships

By David Lee NAGAMBIE local, Craig Bennett is currently attempting to free-fall his way to national glory, as he takes to the skies alongside his four other K4 teammates in an attempt to take out the 2019 Australian and New Zealand National Skydiving Championships.

Approximately 150 competitors are joining a huge contingent of supporters,

judges, officials, sponsors and spectators in descending on Moruya on the NSW south coast until March 18.

Having been involved in skydiving for 25 years, Craig and his team competed at an international level in the four-way Sequential Canopy Formation category, winning bronze at the World Parachuting Championships on the Gold Coast last year.

Craig said, “We expect to do well. We have our coach, Fred Mirvault who has been a world champion in the past in this discipline and he’s giving us all the French secrets.

“We will do reasonably well and plan on taking out the competition locally but what we are looking forward to is the World Championships in Tanay, Russia in November this year.”

LEADERSHIP NEEDED Dear Editor, We are all well aware of the negative impacts of climate change.

Doing nothing is obviously no longer an option, so therefore it’s left to what individually and collectively we do to mitigate and adapt to the current impacts that are upon us and the even more dire circumstances we will have to embrace in the future.

Rather than acting with a modicum of concern and being content that we have done our best as long as our way of life isn’t changed, perhaps we have to take bolder actions to ensure we have a viable and prosperous future.

In my view we have to treat the present and future impacts of climate change as an emergency and act accordingly.

As a region we must set a new direction that motivates ever yone in every conceivable way to reduce absolutely our Co2 emissions. For example our agricultural sector must integrate water, energy, environment and social consideration to the extent previously never envisaged.

Climate change impacts everyone and every organisation and should be core business for every entity.

If we are to control the impacts of climate change, all our regional leaders (health, water, education, food processing, media and the arts to name just a few) should acknowledge publically that we have a dire problem, what actions their organisation is taking and that they are totally committed to combating climate change.

Willing statements from our leaders will truly set the direction for the changes urgently needed.

Strong local banking alternative DURING February, Westpac announced that it would close 22 branches nationally during 2019, citing a move to online banking by customers and a decline in branch transactions as the reason for the closures. The Westpac branch in Benalla is one of the branches earmarked to close.

Dominique’s story I WAS born and raised in Shepparton. At the age of 16, I started working at a well known local pharmacy and it was there I gained my passion for beauty therapy.

In 1981 my mum Barbara Little brought a hairdressing salon at 6 Fryers Street and from there, Hairtrend was born. I left the pharmacy to work in the salon and after successfully completing my first waxing course in Melbourne. I became the first person in Shepparton to run their beauty room from inside a hairdressing salon.

I then went on to continue courses in Melbourne on facials, skincare and nails and I was again the first person to locally introduce acrylic nails, fibreglass and later, gel nails.

In 1982, I did my hairdressing apprenticeship, and in that time combined my hairdressing and beauty clients. After completion of my apprenticeship, I gave away hairdressing and decided to concentrate fully on beauty therapy.

The owner of a renowned establishment in Hampton, Melbourne, asked me if I would like to learn semi-permanent makeup in 1993. Of course, I said yes and after completing my training, I became the first person in country Victoria to do semi-permanent makeup.

As time went on, I completed more advanced training in Melbourne as a cosmetic technician and then in 2014, I went to Los Angeles to obtain my CPDA (Certified Professional

LAST Thursday night, approximately 230 people from the region gathered to celebrate the contributions of all who identify as women in our community for the 2019 International Women’s Day event.

Organised by The Greater Shepparton Women’s Charter Advisory Committee, the evening utilised spoken word, music and dance to recognise the passion, strength and leadership of local women of all ages. Guest speakers spoke of the intersectional experience of being a woman, and how that affects their role in the home, workplace and community.

The global theme for International Women’s Day in 2019 is #BalanceforBetter – a call to action for driving gender balance across the world. Speakers described examples of what positive changes have already been made toward creating a more balanced world, as well as their vision for future progress towards gender equality.

The Greater Shepparton Women’s Charter Advisory Committee would like to congratulate Jiehan Elmaz for winning the 2019 GSWCAC award and also extend congratulations to all the nominees.

Nadals Kebabs provided catering for the evening’s event, with sweet treats provided by One Sweet Baker.

The GSWCAAC would like to thank everyone involved, including guest speakers Christina Vithoulkas and Dr Remi Kehinde.

By Ash Beks PARKED unused under a tree in a paddock near Mooroopna, Chris Seymour spotted his dream vehicle. Rotting away and slowly losing dignity, Chris enquired and swiftly purchased this 1954 Ford Custom Model for only $50.

“It was one great bargain, even for 1964 prices,” Chris explained, “But I still had to return the tires.”

The engine needed to be replaced, everything needed to be rewired and there was a bunch of other work required; but working on and enhancing this treasured vehicle was a hobby Chris would lovingly continue for 55 years.

“I reckon this beast owes me about half a million,” Chris joked

lovingly, “I’ve had everything changed and re-upholstered and we changed colours several times. Some of the colours we had including aqua with white, yellow, black, red, Daytona bronze, blue and now it’s back to yellow.”

Chris, a rock ‘n’ roller from way back, chose the cars’ current yellow paint job based on the classic 1932 Ford Coupe from George Lucas’ iconic rock ‘n’ roll film, American Graffiti. 1950s and 1960s rock iconography is plastered throughout the vehicle, with a Johnny O’Keefe sticker across on the front and a figurine Elvis Presley dancing on the back dash.

Look out for Chris and Charlene as they cruise the streets of Shepparton in their gorgeous 1954 Ford Custom Model.

Enjoy a delightful stroll at dusk

Local rides to the top TOP tier riders from around Australia came together last weekend to compete in the biggest BMX series on the country’s 2019 calendar, the BMXA BAD BOY National Series, with Shepparton’s Hayden Fletcher coming out on top.

The in-form 20 -year old has been notching together some impressive results, with the best occurring during the national series competition.

Following the event, that was held in Perth, Fletcher’s strong results have him standing at the top of the leader board for the superclass series and third for the UCI (international sporting body) elite men’s series.

Fletcher won the superclass series’ opening round in Sydney last month and has backed that up with a third in the second round and a runner-up finish behind Australia’s leading rider, Kai Sakakibara at the national series in Perth.

The rising star also finished second behind Sakakibara in the UCI elite men’s event, a race that carried extra significance as it was the Australian season’s first race

that carried valuable Olympic qualification points.

After his strong performance in Perth, Fletcher is eager for his next race and is enjoying the consistency he is producing on the track.

“Yeah I’m really stoked with my performance at the moment and it’s a great feeling to be on top of the standings for the superclass,” Fletcher said.

“I have managed to make all the podiums so far in the national series and it’s a really good feeling to have that consistency.

“To be putting in good results against the likes of Kai (Sakakibara) who is ranked eighth in the world is awesome.

“He is obviously one of the fastest riders in the world let alone in Australia and alongside him you have are other guys like Shane (Rosa), Corey (Frieswyk), Brandon (Te Hiko), Bodi (Turner) and Max Cairns who are all super-fast and competitive.”

A dream for Fletcher’s 2019 is to find the top of the podium at the 2019 BMXA BAD BOY National Championships at his home club in Shepparton on May 20 to 26.

FAMILIES and groups are encouraged to get out and active to enjoy the last weeks of daylight savings. Greater Shepparton City Council’s Activities in the Park Program will be operating a Twilight Stroll next week for those interested in observing the beautiful bush at dusk.

Take part in a glorious twilight stroll from Shepparton or Mooroopna to SPC Kidstown.

You can register and walk from Chinaman’s Gardens in Mooroopna, or from the Aquamoves Bridge in Shepparton. Registration for the event will start at 5:30pm.

Greater Shepparton City Council Healthy Communities officer, Carmen Nicholson said, “This event caters for the whole family with so many free activities on offer at Kidstown, including inflatables, train rides and a BBQ tea.

Please make sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing, remember to bring a drink bottle and dress sun smart.

“Participants can enjoy this free event walking from either Shepparton or Mooroopna toward SPC Kidstown, with a return walk or a courtesy shuttle bus for those who are too

Multicultural community to discover cricket skills

By David Lee MEMBERS of our multicultural community will from today be given the chance to learn new skills in cricket from the Shepparton/ Youth Club United Cricket Club, after the club received a grant through Cricket Victoria’s Harmony Hubs program to run cricket clinics.

The clinics, which will be run by qualified coach, Steve Williams, will be available to students at the Shepparton English Language Centre on St George’s Road, who will be transported to Princess Park to take part in the clinics with representatives from Cricket Victoria, the Ethnic Council of Shepparton and District and other multicultural groups on hand.

Shepparton/Youth Club United Cricket Club vice president, Tony Giblin said, “The program is funded by the Victorian G overn ment’s Multicult u ral Spor ts Fund Grants Program and our club was nominated to run the clinics because of our multicultural connection with our players.

“This is a start-up program for kids who have not had much experience with cricket, and for new arrivals to the region over the past six months.

“Cricket is a sport for all, and so we are pleased to be able to offer this to our local multicultural groups.

“This a four year funding agreement with Cricket Victoria and we are looking forward to seeing how it goes.”
