Rock out to car rallye tunes

By David Lee IN just over one month, hundreds of locals will get their groove on for the 24th Goulburn Valley Hospice Rallye.

Running on May 4 and 5 the rallye will once again leave Shepparton but this time will take drivers on an interesting route to the spectacular rolling hills of Eildon.

The Goulburn Valley Hospice Rallye has proven to be a fun event for thousands of car enthusiasts over the years showcasing

their pride and joy. Past events have seen participants jump in their ‘20s model vehicles, classic VW, Ferrari, Volvo or modern family sedan and travel the round trip over two days.

Rallye chairman, Min Innes-Irons and committee person, Andrew McNab said, “We had quite a successful year last year and everybody enjoyed the magic theme, so we decided to once again have a fun theme that people can really get into.

Meola reminisces on Shepparton’s first roundabout

By David Lee WITH works currently underway on the Balaclava and Verney Road roundabout, local resident, John Meola took some time to speak with The Adviser about his involvement in building the original roundabout, which was the first ever to be built in Shepparton.

In 1977, John and the late Desmond Lynch took on the mammoth task of installing the roundabout, which replaced a bridge over a channel, with Desmond on the grader and John taking the jobs of roller driver and water truck driver. But the pair ran into some issues, which meant the job took 17 weeks in total to complete.

John said, “When they started digging the roundabout out,

they found a pipe which started leaking water, so we had to put a stabiliser in to stop the pipes from sinking. It also rained every day during construction.

“Things are done very differently today, but I had fun working on it.”

Having spent 21 years working for council, John is no stranger to our local roads and can pinpoint where drainage pipes are on many roads as he worked on them all including Wheeler Street, Drummond Road, Quinan Parade, The Boulevard from Knight Street to Kittles Road, Ford Road, Hawkins Street, Corio Street from Nixon Street to Maude Street, Skene Street and more. He was also part of the team that installed the original brick footpaths at the International Village.

Painter primed to pick up pieces at America’s Moto GP

By David Lee YOU may know him from his teaching days at Wanganui Park Secondary College or through his radio segment on OneFM, but what you may not know is that local resident, John Painter is a keen motorbike and Moto GP fanatic. In fact, being involved in the superbike scene at Phillip Island for 18 years has just landed John the opportunity to travel to America to take up position on the track as a track marshal.

On Thursday, April 11, John will report to the circuit for the Moto GP ‘Circuit of the Americas’ in Austin, Texas where he will meet other track marshals and then on Friday it will be his time to shine, taking up position alongside the track.

As part of his duties, John will be responsible for picking up the pieces if anybody crashes on his corner.

John said, “I’ve been involved in Moto GP and superbikes in Australia for many years and I also have a level four Motorcycle Australia Officials Licence.

“During the world superbikes event in February I was speaking with a representative of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and I asked what the Circuit of the Americas was like and she said that they were looking for people and suggested I have a look. I looked into it, applied and was accepted.

“To be able to experience how it is all done in another country is something I am looking forward to.

“It will be a huge and unique experience.”

Shepparton set for airborne power line checks NEXT month, you may notice a couple of helicopters taking to the air around Shepparton and they will be completing a very special task.

Powercor will be using the two Bell 260 helicopters to fly about 250-500 metres above power lines in April to scan vegetation growing nearby. The helicopters will be fitted with state-of-the-art Light Detection and Ranging Measurement (LiDA R) survey technology that involves using a laser measuring unit to measure the distances between power lines and surrounding vegetation.

Powercor vegetation manager, Hugh Vickers-Willis said the

work was about improving the safety and reliability of the network.

“As the owner and operator of the electricity poles and wires across some of Victoria’s most bushfire-prone areas, we work throughout the year to get ready for summer,” Mr VickersWillis said.

“These inspections are being carried out now in preparation for the next fire season and are also used to highlight any urgent work that needs tending to.

“We get enquiries from the public asking why the helicopters are flying low over their town, so we want to reassure everyone that it’s for the safety of the community.”

Interesting way to educate students on bullying

By David Lee WHILE it was fun and games at Wilmot Road Primary School on Friday last week, the day was all about quite a serious matter…bullying.

As part of the National Day of Action Against Bullying, students dressed out of uniform and donned crazy hairdos to demonstrate how different everyone is. Each classroom carried out anti-bullying activities and spoke about bully prevention including practising how to be a cool, calm kid role play activity and drawing pictures on how Allan the Alien can fit in at school.

Wilmot Road Primary School social worker, Emma Monteleone said, “It is super important to teach the children about bullying. We have a zero tolerance approach to bullying at our school.

“We want to teach them strategies in how to respond to and prevent bullying “The kids were all very excited and learned a lot.”

Putting spotlight on region in Canberra A RECENT visit to Canberra by Greater Shepparton City Council’s mayor and CEO has demonstrated to ministers the pace at which Greater Shepparton is growing and why investment is critical for the future growth and success of our region.

Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe and CEO, Peter Harriott made the trip on behalf of Regional Cities Victoria (RCV) on Wednesday, February 20 and Thursday, February 21.

Cr O’Keeffe was recently elected as deputy chair of RCV and alongside Mr Harriott lobbied for the needs of regional cities around the state.

Cr O’Keeffe met with Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack’s office, while also spending time with Minster for Local Government, Sport and Decentralisation, Senator Bridget McKenzie, Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population, Alan Tudge MP and Shadow Assistant Minister for Workplace Relations, Lisa Chester MP. Cr O’Keeffe said it was important to meet with ministers to discuss the aspirations of Victoria’s regional cities.

“RCV is made up of 10 regional cities that strive for prosperous and sustainable local economies and high levels of amenity and liveability,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

Calls for VicRoads audit of dangerous Shepparton intersection SAFETY concerns for the Nixon and Wyndham Street intersection have been put back in the spotlight, with calls for VicRoads to produce a road safety audit and to undertake safety upgrades.

Following a serious collision between a car and a truck in May 2018, which resulted in a woman being hospitalised, Liberal Member for Northern Victoria, Wendy Lovell raised the safety concerns, stating that traffic signal visibility was a contributing factor in the collision.

A f ter initially raising the mat ter in State Parliament, Ms Lovell understood that VicRoads would conduct the audit, with no results released to the public to date, and is now calling on the minister to release the findings.

Ms Lovell said, “Motorists travelling west in Nixon Street approaching Wyndham Street do not face a traffic signal mastarm, an elevated traffic signal, and are forced to rely on traffic signals at normal ground level with one obstructed from view by a tree. Compounding the issue is that motorists are getting distracted by a highly visible traffic signal mastarm facing westbound traffic at the next intersection at Nixon Street/Welsford Street.

“The installation of a traffic signal mastarm at the intersection of Nixon Street and Wyndham Street for westbound traffic would avert motorist confusion, improve signal visibility and help prevent further collisions at the intersection.”

EXTENDING OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHY Dear Editor, The appalling massacre of people at prayer at the Mosques in Christchurch has sent a shudder of fear across Muslim communities throughout New Zealand and Australia.

The Shepparton Interfaith Network extends its deepest sympathy and regret to Muslims in New Zealand first of all, but also to the local Muslim communities and Mosques in the Goulburn Valley area.

Muslims have been members of the Shepparton community for 100 years now. Their contributions to the wider community here in business, agriculture, local government and the professions have been crucial to the development of our proudest achievement - the vibrant and tolerant multiculturalism which is part of Shepparton life.

We pray that this brutal massacre of innocent children, women and men will strengthen, not undermine, our commitment to the building of a tolerant, multi-faith multicultural community throughout Australia and New Zealand.

I REMAIN DISTURBED Dear Editor, I have just read the book that won the Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for 2019 (Victorian Prize for Literature) written

by Behrouz Boochani and translated by Omid Tofighian.

Behrouz book titled ‘No friend but the Mountains’ was written from Manus Island where he still spends his days as an inmate. This book was thumbed on a phone and smuggled out of Manus in the form of thousands of text messages.

Reading this book was difficult and emotionally disturbing

as it challenged my very beliefs that Australia was a land of decency, kindness, generosity and ‘a fair go.’ None of these quantities are evident in Boochani’s accounts of hunger, squalor, beatings and abuse. We can only be seen as the ‘ugly Australians’ by the world in general. We have surrendered our right to criticise other countries for their inhumane treatment of fellow human beings.

Prisoners are controlled by the instigation of a Kyriarchal System. This is a system built around domination, oppression and submission. Behrouz Boochani describes the Australian run Manus Island Detention Centre as a Kyriarchal system where different forms of oppression intersect. Oppression is not random but purposeful, designed to isolate and creates friction amongst prisoners leading to despair and broken spirits. Any games are prohibited.

We have been influenced by our government’s propaganda relating to these desperate refugees as we accept our government’s word that these refugees are illegal and probably murders and child abusers. We are now offered an insight from a very intelligent prisoner and a magnificent writer as he shows us the other side of this horrific prison.

I would challenge those people who support the imprisonment of legal refugees to read this book and then to say to me that these people deserve this deprivation. This is a must read for all our supposed leaders especially members of our two major political parties who use this situation for their own political point scoring.

I remain disturbed.

A ‘Mad’ visit to motor museum MADNESS descended on Shepparton Motor Museum last week, with Mad Max stunt bike creator and actor Bertrand Cadart visiting Shepparton to film part of his documentary Beneath the Outback Sun. Now 70 years old, Bertrand has for the past year been battling a terminal illness, but this hasn’t stopped him from touring the country to make the documentary on his life

and the legacy of Mad Max and Australian car and bike culture.

Bertrand also left behind a something a little special, lending his Pontiac Trans Am Firebird GTA 1991 to the museum until his documentary’s release, which over the past month he has driven from Queensland to Clunes, Broken Hill and then Melbourne as part of the movie.

An extra hour regained I’D BE kidding you if I said I wasn’t looking forward to regaining that extra hour when the 2018/19 daylight savings period comes to an end across the state. To be honest, my car clock is still on the ‘prior to October 2018 daylight savings time,’ so it will be nice to see it displaying the correct time again.

The conclusion of this year’s period is Sunday, April 7, when clocks will go backwards one hour at 3am.

While it doesn’t correctly correlate with the name of Australia seasons, a little tip to help you remember when to turn your clocks back an hour and when to turn them forward is ‘Spring Forward and Fall Back’ meaning in spring, you turn your clocks forward and in fall (autumn) you turn your clocks back an hour.

Grants available to help protect grey box grassy woodlands GOULBURN Broken Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has recently announced that grants are available for landholder to carry out works to improve and protect grey box grassy woodlands on their properties through the Linking Landscapes and Communities Project.

Goulburn Broken CMA ecologist, Dr Jenny Wilson said the woodlands were an important part of the natural environment.

“They provide habitat for a range of species including nationally threatened swift parrots, regent honeyeaters, turnip copperburr and small purple tea,” Dr Wilson said.

“As part of the project we’re providing incentives to landholders to carry out actions such as revegetation, pest plant and animal control and fencing to manage stock access.”

Dr Wilson said similar activities carried out by

landholders involved in previous projects showed that once on-ground works were completed, farmers noticed a range of environmental, social and economic benefits.

“As well as creating a healthy landscape and attracting native birds and wildlife, improving habitat will increase the chances of many species’ ability to adapt to changes in climate,” Dr Wilson said.

“These types of activities also increase productivity and the value of farms; what we call ‘nature at work.’ More native vegetation attracts insects with pollination and managing weeds improves soil health.”

Safety upgrades commence on Watt Road ROAD users are being reminded that during this week, Watt Road between Mooroopna and Riverview Drive will be closed while safety upgrades are carried out.

Over the past five years, there have been at least 14 crashes in this area where five were deemed serious injury crashes, leading to the works, which are part of the Nation Building Blackspot Program, a road safety initiative to reduce the risks and consequences at dangerous locations.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure, Phil Hoare said it was important for council to continue safety works throughout the community.

“In 2013, council upgraded Watt Road south of the rail crossing, however the section between the Mooroopna Bridge and the rail crossing was not upgraded and has a history of run-off road crashes,” Mr Hoare said.

“With more than 4,500 vehicles using this section of road each day, Council is pleased with the funding which will assist us in providing a safer environment for those who use this route.”

Local residents will be provided access during the works and council advises commuters to plan ahead and be alert of changed traffic conditions and alternate routes during this time.

In addition to the safety upgrades council will also take the opportunity, while the road is closed, to complete re-sealing works south of the railway line.

These works will include installing 288 metres of guardrail, laying down long life line markings and removing some trees in dangerous locations.

Time to ‘train the trainer’ and spread the word on Queensland Fruit Fly A RECENT Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) ‘train the trainer’ workshop at GOTAFE Shepparton held on February 28 provided training and education on the pest to 20 Lions Club members.

Ten Lions Clubs from across the Goulburn Murray Valley region were represented through selected members who are now trained to deliver QFF education sessions to local schools within their communities.

Key components of the training and induction workshop included trap making, control and prevention in the home garden, general education about the pest and the risk it poses to the region’s horticulture industry.

Goulburn Murray Valley regional fruit fly co-ordinator, Ross Abberfield described the workshop as an important

part of the Queensland Fruit Fly Schools Education Program, which is made possible through the continued partnership with Lions International and the Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Queensland Fruit Fly Project.

“This Schools Education Program has been successful in combining community engagement with education and increased awareness to help reduce the spread of fruit fly and protect against the pest.”

Tournament for the juniors

On Sunday, GV Squash & Racquetball Club hosted 55 junior squash players from Victoria and New South Wales who competed in the Goulburn Valley Junior Age Squash Tournament, with Haley Gorringe from GV Squash & Racquetball Club winning her division in her first ever junior competition. Players were graded and the competition was run in nine divisions from A Grade to D Reserve.

Goulburn Valley Squash & Racquetball Club president, Christian Lecompte said, “This is the second of six junior age events run by Squash & Racquetball Victoria during the year and is open to all players aged under 23 years. Bushrangers notch first win THE Murray Bushrangers has recorded its first victory of the NAB League season with a win over the Western Jets at J.C. Lowe Oval, Yarrawonga.

In near perfect playing conditions, the Bushrangers kept the Jets scoreless going into the first break with Kate Adams, Olivia Barber, Emilee McPherson, Teagan Brett and Ally Morphett all firing from the first bounce.

The second quarter saw the Bushrangers increase their lead with Millie Brown and Mikaela Trethowan clearing the ball from the middle. Olivia Barber continued to take contested marks up forward, with Tali Verhoeven lending a helping hand.

Chelsea Styan and Sophie Locke led by example laying relentless tackles giving the Bushrangers every opportunity to play their attacking brand of football.

The third quarter showcased the defensive pressure of Trethowan, Adams, Locke, Brett, Mindy Quade and Hayley Doohan, who were all rewarded for their efforts. Brett continued to break the lines and evade the Jets defence, hitting her teammates lace out with her elite foot skills.

Leading by 30 points going into the final term, the Bushrangers never gave up with Chelsea Styan and Sophie Locke again applying relentless pressure with their tackling prowess with Doohan and Trethowan continuing to work hard in defence.

The Murray Bushrangers (6.7 43) were too good for the Western Jets (5.1 37). The Murray Bushrangers travel to RAMS Arena, Craigieburn to play their round three match on Sunday, March 24 against Gippsland Power.

Donation the start to realising a commemorative dream

By David Lee A RECENT donation of $5,000 by the Mooroopna Masonic Lodge is the first step to helping the Rotary Club of Mooroopna members realise their dream of a $200,000 upgrade to the Mooroopna War Memorial.

Having been given the $5,0 0 0 by Freemasons Victoria, the local masonic lodge chose to donate it toward the memorial upgrade as they believed it was a worthy cause.

memorial and will lead to a newly installed nurse memorial and beyond. Travelling east along the pathway will be ‘display walls’ constructed with Digi Glass that will be home to photographs and the names of WWII veterans.

North east of the current cenotaph will be a raised area for speakers on ANZAC Day with three flag poles.

Mooroopna Masonic Lodge master, Ted Davis said, “There is no recognition of WWII or later veterans and we think that they deserve to be honoured.”

Armies invade Kyabram

By David Lee THROUGHOUT this week, Kyabram and surrounds is being invaded by two armies, but it is an invasion of a positive kind.

Thirty-seven members of Rural Aid’s Farm Army from across Australia, 22 volunteers from Honda and 20 members of the Australian Army Band have been and will continue to carry out nine community projects and visit four farms to lend a hand.

The armies have dropped two road-trains of hay at Neil and Sarah Parker’s farm at Trevaskis Road, with five other farmers coming in to receive some much needed support.

They then headed to Kyabram P-12 School with a load of musical instruments and the army band in tow.

Rural Aid general manager, Wayne Thomson said, “We are so excited to be in Kyabram with our Farm Army. The projects

that the council have identified will make a real difference to the people of Kyabram.

“The instruments given to the school will be used to grow the existing program and add many brand new and donated instruments.

The army performed for the children and their families, to enthuse and encourage the children in their musical journey.

“Rural Aid has worked closely with Campaspe Shire Council councillor, Vicki Neele to identify projects around the town.

Working closely with local community groups, this week will see work completed on the town hall, community gardens, fauna park, croquet club, even a new kitchen (including a brand new stove) at the showgrounds, just to name a few. Jobs on farms will include replacing asbestos sheeting, fencing and replacing gutters.

$5.6M to strengthen industry partnerships

MORE than $5.6M in funding has been provided to Shepparton’s GOTAFE campus last week, which aims to boost the Tafe’s courses in baking, dental assistance, nursing, cabinet making, engineering fabrication and health services.

The boost will help GOTAFE continue to strengthen innovative partnerships with industry and other key stakeholders.

GOTAFE CEO, Travis Heeney said, “GOTAFE has developed strong partnerships with employers and industry and they often approach us with specific training needs.

“We work with those employers and industry to customise

a training solution, and these announcements are a terrific outcome from some of that work.”

The Minister for Training and Skills, the Hon. Gayle Tierney’s funding announcement was for courses and programs that will be delivered by GOTAFE under the Victorian Government’s Regional and Specialist Training Fund, and Workforce Training Innovation Fund.

GOTAFE programs and courses receiving funding include Certificate II in Baking, Certificate III in Baking, Certificate III in Dental Assisting, Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade, Certificate III in Cabinet Making,

Diploma of Nursing, Certificate III in Health Support Services as well as the Industry-wide Upskilling Training and Assessment Model for the Heating, Ventilation, AirConditioning and Refrigeration Industry.

“We are working to ensure our curriculum is fully aligned to the current and future needs of local employers, industries and communities, and this funding boost will help that work,” Mr Heeney said.

“We are resolutely committed to ensuring the needs of students and industries, especially across regional Victoria.”

Showcasing Albanian culture like no other event A CELEBRATION of food, family, culture, music and community is set to once again take over the Shepparton Showgrounds, when the 2019 Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival kicks off.

Following on from the fantastic success of last year, shown by the festival being the recipient of the Greater Shepparton and Shepparton Community Event of the Year award at the 2019 Australia Day Awards, the event will run on Sunday, March 24 with entertainment starting from 11am.

Festival Committee member, Reg Qemal said, “The event showcases the Albanian culture and entertains audiences with traditional Albanian food, music and dancing, along with a fruit and vegetable market that offers produce grown and packed by local farmers.

“Supported by the Shepparton Albanian Women’s Committee,

Shepparton Show Me and Greater Shepparton City Council, this event has been recognised by the Australian Albanian consulate general.

“There is also a raffle at a cost of just $5 where entrants have the chance to win a trip to Albania.

Stoate breaks course record THE Shepparton Runners Club (SRC) was well represented at the 10th Numurkah Fun Run on the weekend. The club had several members participate in the 5km and 10km race.

Nathan Stoate took out first place in the 5km race in a time of 16 minutes and 53 seconds, creating a new course record for the event in its 10th year.

Aiden Ross, one of the clubs youngest members, finished second in his age category for 5km, with a time of 24 minutes, 40 seconds.

The 10km fun run saw many more podium finishes for the club. Cousins Rory Urquart and Mason Sleeth placed first and second in the male U16 category.

SRC coach, Chris Armstrong placed first with a time of 36 minutes and 57 seconds, with fellow club member Harry Ukich placing second with a time of 39 minutes and 52 seconds.

New officer bearers helping move city forward

By David Lee FOLLOWING on from the resignations of the Shepparton Show Me chair and treasurer, three new office bearers have taken up positions on the voluntary committee, all in a bid to help move Shepparton forward.

Shane Sali was appointed chairperson by vote of the committee after the resignation of Simon Quattrocchi. Mr Sali was previously the deputy chair of Shepparton Show Me. Kristina Marko, of La Trobe University, was appointed treasurer following the resignation of Chris Reisner. Andrew Pogue, of Kevin Hicks Real Estate, was appointed to the position of deputy chair.

Shane said, “I am honoured to be a part of such an outstanding voluntary committee and am excited for the future.

“We have some big events coming up and more in the pipeline.

“Shepparton Show Me has given financial support to a number of local and major community events as well as major promotions like Great Things Happen Here which has seen international exposure.”

Kristina said, “In my new role there is a high line of accountability as I will be in charge of managing the budget and making informed decisions for the betterment of the region. I feel honoured and privileged to have the

opportunity to do this alongside the rest of the team.”

Andrew said, “I am excited to be part of a committee that is dedicated to the growth of Shepparton.

“We will work together to do everything we can to ensure that the Shepparton precincts prosper in a positive manner.”

Both Mr Quattrocchi and Mr Reisner remain as Shepparton Show Me committee members and resigned from the roles due to the need for increased focus on their businesses. The other Shepparton Show Me Committee members are John Montagner, Helen Sofra, Stephen Schneider and Olivia Smith.

Community reminded waterways still affected THE community is being urged to avoid contact with water in Waranga Basin and other Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) waterways following the recent detection of high blue-green algae levels. And with the 2019 duck hunting season having just kicked off, spreading the message to be cautious around affected waterways is even more important.

There are currently warnings for blue-green algae at Cairn Curran Reservoir, Lake Eppalock and Waranga Basin.

Warning signs will be positioned at major recreational areas around Waranga Basin and will remain in place while high levels of blue-green algae are present.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack said the project would help to provide a globally competitive sale price, unlocking export markets currently unavailable to the Goulburn Valley and the Australian pome and stone fruit industry.

“The Liberal and Nationals Government i s c o m m it t e d t o s up p o r t i n g l o c a l communities, helping them to prosper and grow, and our strong economic position allows us to make significant investments in local infrastructure projects such as FRUITCo,” Mr McCormack said.

Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum said this state-of-the-art technology means less premium quality fruit will go to waste.

“The nations we compete against for the export market are light-years ahead of us in the fruit sorting and packing process and FRUITCo will bridge that gap,” Mr Drum said.

“Ultimately, this is an investment in our

fruit industry and will elevate the Goulburn Valley to Australia’s leading fruit-growing region.”

Geoffrey Thompson Fruit Packing Pty Ltd director, Peter Thompson said there has been widespread support from both growers and the wider community for a facility such as FRUITCo to be established in the Goulburn Valley.

“This new technology will revolutionise the packing process, increasing returns from the farm-gate to fruit growers supplying domestic and export markets,” Mr Thompson said.

IT’S a beautiful country with some of the best scenery in the world, but if you want to see it up close you can do it on foot with great walking trails.

For Stuart Brown of Shepparton it was something he wanted to do for some time so he signed up with Ultimate Hikes and his first challenge was the Milford Track.

It’s a five day experience and covers 53km through some of the best scenery. You have to carry your own gear as in clothing, as it can still snow in January; you need a coat and thermals.

Stuart was part of a group of 50 people from around the world taking part and because you are supporting one another you get to make some great friendships.

You can get wet and cold but this is ‘glamping.’ Each night you stay at a luxury lodge with queen size bed, ensuite and a much needed clothes dryer, and the meals are just the best.

On day two they walked along the Clinton River. The water is so clear Stuart says you can see the bottom in 20 foot of water…so you have the river on one side and snowcapped mountains on the other.

It was hard work navigating sections of the track, but at the end of the day a warm bed and a much needed clothes dryer awaited.

The third day was the longest as they crossed the Mackinnon Pass. They were up in the snow line the views breathtaking.

They now made their way down to Milford Sound and time to relax and experience a cruise on the picturesque waters of the sound. What a way to end the first leg of their experience.

Next was a second walk but this time on the Routeburn Track, which runs along the top of the mountains. It was wet and the waterfalls were running at top speed.

This walk runs for three days and it was more challenging than the first. Stuart was grateful that the lodges all had clothes dryers.

He took waterproof gear but in this weather nothing is waterproof.

All the walks start in Queenstown, challenging yes but quite doable. Stuart says flora and birds you see along the way set against some of the most stunning scenery just makes it the best experience.

Rowing strong to gold, silver and bronze

By David Lee THE Shepparton Rowing Club hit the water for a fantastic weekend at the State Rowing Championships held on Lake Nagambie recently, with the club rowing their way to a gold, silver and bronze win.

Top results were seen for the men’s D grade quad of Nicholas Waller with Jack Puise, Cameron Waller, Hamish Kerr and coxswain, James Darbyshire. The group combined to comfortably win their heat which put them in the race for medals in the final of six crews.

Karen Eldred from the Shepparton Rowing Club said, “It was going to be a challenging final for the D grade quad as crews from other heats qualified for the final with a 10 second faster heat time.

“Our crew was masterly stroked by Waller to lead the final from the start, going on to win in fine style with the fastest time of the day by a margin of six seconds. Of course they were crowned State Champions and collected a gold medal.”

In the under 17 double scull, James Eldred and Jack Puise got off to a great start, but were unable to keep the pace over the 2,000m and were overtaken by a crew from Essendon who took the gold, with the Shepparton duo holding on to win a silver medal.

The club’s bronze medal was won by Murchison’s James Darbyshire in the under 15 single scull.

double scull. They had a great row to finish second in their heat and qualify for the final.

The final was raced in very quick time and Cassetta and Todd were unable to secure a medal,” Karen said.

“Kerr who is in his first season of rowing placed third in his heat just missing out on qualifying for the final. His time showed great improvement beating his previous best time on the Nagambie course by 16 seconds.

“Boal and Waller combined to have an

impressive row finishing fourth in the final in the D grade double scull against some strong crews from Melbourne.

“As a junior rower competing only for the second time, Euroa’s Emily Belcher was in the women’s under 15 single scull improving her time and technique each time she races.”

The club is now preparing for the next event on the Maribyrnong River at the Footscray Saltwater Regatta.

BMX World Cup to be taken to new level A FEDERAL Government grant of $145,000 will help see Greater Shepparton City Council take the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) 2020 BMX Supercross World Cup to the next level when it comes to the region next year.

This will be the first time in more than 10 years a UCI BMX Supercross World Cup event has been held in Australia, with Greater Shepparton securing the event that will see more than 200 of the world’s best BMX riders from over 30 countries participating.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said, “With this funding, the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup will now have a supporting festival during the event, showcasing food and music to celebrate the strengths of our diverse community to the many visitors converging on our region,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

Part of the funding will also support the Shepparton BMX Club to develop new programs, activities and events to help the club grow

membership and increase club sustainability.

The event will now also look to host an amateur participation event with up to 1,000 competitors and expand its marketing and broadcast reach.

It is expected that the funding support will now attract an additional 5,000 to 7,000 people, including up to 1,000 international visitors. Organisers are now expecting over 10,000 people to attend the event.

“We are estimating the economic impact will be more than $2.7M, which will be a substantial economic boost for our community,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

The opening rounds of the UCI 2020 BMX Supercross World Cup will be held from Friday, January 31 to Sunday, February 2, 2020. This will be one of the last major BMX events before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with qualifying points still occurring.

Mayor to have voice on issues affecting local government GREATER Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe has been appointed to the 2019 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel (LGMAP), where she will be a voice for the range of matters which impact on local government.

A high-quality field of mayors from across Victoria have been nominated for the LGMAP, with a group of just 14 making up the final panel.

Cr O’Keeffe’s appointment starts immediately and will cease on Sunday, October 20 this year.

The panel will meet for the first time on April 3, before also meeting on May 29, July 31 and September 18.

Cr O’Keeffe said she was thrilled to be selected for the panel and can’t wait to get started.

“I am delighted to be one of 14 mayors from across the state to be chosen to be on the 2019 Local Government Panel,” Mayor O’Keeffe said.

“As a member of the panel I have the opportunity to represent Greater Shepparton and share our future aspirations as a progressive region.

“In my role as the mayor of Greater Shepparton, I am determined to make sure our region is well represented.

“I will have the opportunity to network, share our success and aspirations and contribute to the future direction of local government.”

A sky high win Nagambie local, Craig Bennett and his skydiving team, K4, placed first in the 4-Way Canopy Formational Sequence division at last week’s Australian and New Zealand National Skydiving Championships. Craig said, “We were really seeing this competition as a training camp and we achieved what we set out to do which is a really good outcome.”
