New $11M cancer centre to be open

by Christmas IT H AS been something desperately required in our region for a long time, but Shepparton is finally getting a world-class, state-of-the-art $11M radiation therapy treatment facility, and it is set to be open

$50M specialty nutritional plant now operational in Shepparton

By David Lee AFTER 12 months under construction, a $50M specialty nutritional ingredients plant is now operational at the Freedom Foods Group Shepparton plant.

The new line received all regulatory approvals recently for operations of the new plant, which will be taking excess proteins from the production of the plant’s UHT line and using it to create specialty nutritional ingredients.

Rivers running dry

By David Lee T HE Shepparton area is experiencing drier than normal conditions, with the lack of rainfall seeing some rivers run dry.

The Adviser came across a parched looking Seven Creeks last week, and with the little rainfall the region received last year it is easy to see why everything is so dry.

The average annual mean rainfall for Shepparton is 439mm, but last year, Shepparton received just 266.4mm of rain. In 2017, Shepparton received 426.6mm of rain, much closer to the annual average.

Bureau of Meteorology senior climatologist, Dr Lynette Bettio said, “What we have been seeing is serious deficiencies of rainfall in the northern Victoria area.

“It was a warm year in 2018, with both maximum and minimum temperatures being higher than average.

“Shepparton also equalled its warmest year on record for daily temperatures, which was only last seen in 2007.

“What we saw during winter was high pressures dominating and a decrease in the frequency and intensity of the rain that normally impacts the Shepparton area.

“Over the last 20 years, between the April and October period, there has been a drying trend over south-eastern and south-western parts of Australia and this is exacerbating the dry conditions.”

Book captures important part of region’s success

By David Lee NOSTA LG I A is cer tain ly mak ing a comeback in popularity when it comes to local history, and that was easy to see at last week’s official book launch of ‘Worth Preserving 100 Years of SPC.’ The book has 263 pages filled with the tale of how SPC came about, the people who helped establish it and detailed stories from individuals throughout the company’s history over the past centenary.

SPC managing director, Reg Weine said, “It’s important to capture the history. This book is a beautiful legacy to leave for the next generation and it really celebrates some of those individuals who have contributed to the success of SPC for the last 100 years.”

Author of the book from Mountstephen Publishing, Jenny Mountstephen said, “It was great working on this book. We had people coming in with their anecdotes, which helped it come alive.

“The interviews I carried out and seeing these people being so transparent with their stories was fantastic.

“It was wonderful and I met so many interesting people. Everyone knows SPC and this is just very special.”

Important job for interesting boat

By David Lee YOU may have been driving past Victoria Park Lake last week and noticed a rather interesting boat doing laps. The aquatic harvester boat was actually completing a very important task, cutting the Ribbon Weed below the surface and storing the cut material on board for later disposal.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure, Phil Hoare said the works are part of regular routine maintenance of the area, to ensure it remains a great community facility.

“Ribbon Weed will remain in the wetland and other areas for its water treatment properties and to provide animal habitat,” Phil said.

Double donation helping community

By David Lee GENEROSITY goes a long way and two donations made by the GV Woodworkers last week will be going quite far, with GV Hospice Care Service and Sailability using the donations for the benefit of the local community.

Each organisation received $750 following several fundraising efforts by the members including selling toys, a big raffle, putting on demonstrations where they collect donations from the public and more recently, they renovated a Furphy cart.

GV Woodworkers vice president, Perrie Bullock said, “We

selected hospice because it is such an important service. A lot of our members have utilised their service so it is close to our hearts. It’s a wonderful service and vital to the community.”

Goulburn Valley Hospice Care Service president, Jeanette Powell said, “We are so pleased to receive the cheque from the woodworkers. This donation will be put to very good use. They do an amazing job in the community making and selling wooden items and even donating some of those items to people over Christmas so that children, who would otherwise go without, receive a special and quality gift.

“We rely heavily on the generosity of the community. The

government funds us for five days a week from 9am to 5pm, but donations like this allow us to provide our services 24 hours a day every day of the week.”

Sailability president, Roy Hill said, “We are very appreciative of the gesture from the woodworkers. We will put this donation to good use. It will make a difference to our organisation and allow us to offer a better service and improve our safety for the benefit of the community.”

By David Lee C U R IOSI T Y was the driving factor for hundreds of locals who took the opportunity to head out and explore the local historical sites that were opened to the public as part of the Heritage Open Days on Friday and Saturday.

Days event included tours of some of Greater Shepparton’s most historic private homesteads, hotels, halls and churches, as well as various places of cultural interest that showcase the Goulburn Valley’s diverse and unique heritage.

Local resident, Andrea McDonald has been living in Shepparton for decades and was thrilled to take the opportunity to learn more about her hometown’s history.

A ndrea said, “I was interested in learning more about Dhurringile Prison.

I was curious and wanted to look at the heritage building.

“I am interested in the local community.

It’s nice to have these types of events happen. It gives you the chance to learn more and them impart what you have learned on to people visiting the local area.”

Teens charged following police assault POLICE have charged two 16-yearold Mooroopna boys after police memb ers were i nju red wh i lst dispersing people at a party in Shepparton early on Sunday morning.

Shepparton police shut down the noisy party on Malcolm Crescent just before 1am.

A number of youths were being verbally abusive towards police on Numurkah Road when a male officer was punched to the head.

A second male was being arrested for being drunk when he allegedly assaulted and fell on a female officer.

B oth constables were taken to hospital with the male officer suffering serious head injuries and the female officer with serious ankle injuries.

Several other members sustained minor injuries during the arrests.

One of the boys has been charged with counts of intentionally causing injury, recklessly causing injury, assaulting an emergency worker on duty, hindering police (indictable) and being drunk.

The second boy has been charged with being drunk, resisting arrest, hindering police (indictable) and has been bailed to appear at a children’s court.

By David Lee IT WAS all smiles at GV Health last week, when the children’s ward put on a special afternoon tea for the Koala Kids Foundation International Day of Happiness.

Staff and children were treated to special Koala shaped gingerbread and colouringin cookies as part of the foundation’s sponsorship of the hospital, which is one of only nine regional hospitals supported by Koala Kids.

GV Health associate nurse unit manager, Veronica Antonello said, “The sponsorship with Koala Kids and GV Health has been running for about four years now.

“The sponsorship was originally about providing assistance and support for children on chemotherapy treatment. All but one of our children have finished their treatment now which is great.

“The sponsorship sees Koala Kids provide monthly groceries, personal care packs, clothing, toys, books and at Christmas and other special event days, they provide us with decorations to brighten up the children’s ward.

“It’s all about making an otherwise unhappy or difficult situation a little easier and happier for the children and their families.”

A celebration of Albanian culture OVER the weekend, thousands of locals and visitors from outside of the Goulburn Valley flocked to Shepparton Showgrounds to enjoy the creativity, community, food and entertainment on offer at the Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival.

Held annually, the festival entertained audiences on Sunday with a day full of culture and celebration. There was traditional Albanian music performed live in front of captivated audiences who snacked on all kinds of delicious traditional Albanian food. There were also market stalls selling Albanian goods and merchandise, a historical display documenting the history of Albanian migration to Australia, as well as a fantastic fruit and vegetable market.

For the kids, there was a jumping castle, petting zoo, face painting, stilt walkers and a wealth of other fun activities.

Shepparton Albanian Harvest Festival committee member, Reg Qemal said, “We would like to thank the Shepparton Albanian Women’s Committee, Shepparton Show Me and Greater Shepparton City Council for their support, this event has been recognised by the Australian Albanian consulate general.

“The festival this year has been such a great success, thanks to everyone who came down to show their support and a huge thank you to all of our volunteers for their help. We couldn’t have put on such a successful event without you.”

How far on track is Shepparton’s fast rail?

By David Lee IT SEEMS that there is a lot of talk on the Fast Rail Network, and this should come as no surprise being an election year. A recent Liberals National Government announcement will see them drop $8M into funding a business case for a network between Albury-Wodonga and Melbourne. But where are we at with the Shepparton line?

$50M specialty nutritional plant now operational in Shepparton continued from front page THE new plant will produce casein and whey to be used in sports performance drinks, bars and more.

The plant is also looking into the production of lactoferrin, which it hopes to have coming off the lines of the new plant later this financial year. The products will initially be sent across the Australian domestic market, with plans to export the product when the lactoferrin is introduced.

Freedom Foods Group managing director, Rory Macleod met with The Adviser yesterday to walk us through the new production area, saying that the company is also looking at a further $40M to $45M expansion to the UHT side of the factory, meaning there will be capacity to grow the new nutritional side.

“Over the next 12 to 18 months we are looking at additional capacities for an increase in production of the UHT milk, casein and whey. The production of raw milk into 2019 will be upwards of 400 million litres with a total capacity of 500 million litres,” Mr Macleod said.

“The growth of the UHT side of the plant is critical to the protein flow for the nutritional side.”

It will also offer rapid access to radiation therapy treatment for patients in palliative care, another first for the community.

Art education expands boundaries STUDENTS from the Goulburn Valley a nd b e yond e x p e r i e n c e d d i f f e re nt perspectives of creativity at SAM last month, with the Education Lab exhibit GreenLAB. Melbourne-based artist and landscape designer, Heather Hesterman has taken up residency in the Education Lab from March 1 to April 7 and has been presenting and running workshops in SAM two days per week for the duration of the exhibition period.

Heather Hesterman’s work focuses on the natural environment and our attitudes towards it, encouraging students to consider a more creative view when observing landscapes.

The Education Lab, supported by La Trobe University, provides students and educators with the opportunity to work directly with the artist and create their own immersive installation within SAM’s exhibition spaces.

T h roug hout t he last f ive we ek s , GreenLAB has evolved with input from schools, educational and community groups, enabling students and the general

public the opportunity to be involved in research, art making and curatorial processes.

Wangaratta Park Secondary College studio art teacher, Kasey Doyle said, “It is so important for our students to come and work directly with an artist like Heather Hesterman.

“It helps students extend the boundaries of their creativity and increases their understanding of what constitutes as art.”

Heather Hesterman’s lab is a part of the ART+CLIMATE = CHANGE 2019 Festival. classic cars AS WE embark into a future of electric and solar-powered cars, it’s time to slow down and celebrate over 100 years of automobile history.

Showcasing at Wunghnu this weekend will be an enormous collection of antique vehicles and tractors from throughout the last 100 years, with a focus on cars specifically from 1919 to 1930.

The Goulburn Valley Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club’s annual rally is now in its 36th year and will feature many muchloved vintage vehicles on display.

One of the gorgeous golden oldies on display at Wunghnu Recreation Reserve Oval this weekend will be Lloyd Healey’s stunning 1928 A Model Ford. Pictured alongside this story, this

glorious vehicle has been in Lloyd’s possession for over 25 years and can be spotted regularly and casually cruising around Victoria.

“I try and take the car out every week,” Lloyd explained, “And this weekend there will be over 60 vintage vehicles like this one out on display this weekend.

“I love being able to go slow in cars like this and propped up higher on the seat. My Ford can only go about 65km/h but it means I can see more of the world as we cruise by.”

The Goulburn Valley Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club’s 36th annual rally will take place from 10am this weekend over both days at the Wunghnu Recreation Reserve Oval.

By David Lee TACKLING a triathlon is no easy feat in itself, but doing so and beating your personal best makes it all worth the while. This is exactly what local resident Scott McHugh did on March 17.

Scott, who is a competitive member of the Shepparton Tri Club, took on the 2XU Triathlon Series Race 5 at Portarlington which involved an 800m swim, 28km bike ride and 8km run, which he managed to complete in 1 hour 50 minutes and 17 seconds, finishing 17 out of 30 in his age group.

Scott said, “I’ve been doing triathlons for three years now and got into it to help keep me fit to ride trail bikes.

“I was pretty pleased with my result and did it fairly comfortably. It

Paired with Ferrari driver, Sebastian Vettel, Cedah was lucky enough to keep the suit, hat and boots that she wore for the day, and even had the chance to get 16 drivers sign her jacket.

Cedah said, “I felt a bit nervous, but I had lots of fun. It was a good experience.

“We got to have a behind-the-scenes look at the pit and paddock and got to meet all the drivers.

“I also got to meet Daniel Ricciardo. It was a dream come true.”

“You need to have a fair bit of resilience. The hardest thing to overcome was the swimming, but the only way I could do that was to condition my mind and body so I started swimming three times a week.

“It’s a balance between pushing hard enough to be competitive but not so hard that you blow up.

“I’m looking forward to completing the half triathlon at Port Macquarie on May 5 where I will complete a 1,900m swim, 90km bike ride and 20km marathon. The plan is to beat my previous time.”

Bushies’ NAB league squad announced A NUMBER of local footy players are set to take to the grounds as part of the Murray Bushrangers’ NAB League Under 18 Squad for 2019.

A squad of 52 players from 20 clubs will represent the Murray Bushrangers in the newly named NAB League competition.

This squad includes locals, Cameron Wild, Lachlan Ash and Ethan Baxter from Shepparton, Zane Barzen, Zavier Maher, Jye Chalcraft, Kade Chalcraft, Liam Fiore, Sean Thompson and Jhett Cooper from Shepparton United, James Boyer from Congupna, Joshua O’Dwyer from Numurkah and Lachlan Sykes from Mooroopna. Cam Wilson (Rutherglen) and Lachlan Ash will co-captain the team.

Murray Bushrangers talent manager, Mick Wilson said, “Selection began in July last year where clubs nominated their talented players. A squad of 90 players joined pre-season in November with our final squad selected after a series of intraclub and practice matches.”

New coach, Mark Brown said, “It was a very thorough selection process and whilst there are disappointed players, each of these players are well prepared for the upcoming season.

“We will continue to monitor their development and many players will come back into the squad on the back of strong local footy and continued improvement.”
