$26M in funding a big step forward for cancer treatment THERE has been a big step forward in cancer treatment in the region following the announcement that the Australian Government would be providing $26M toward an Integrated Cancer Centre at GV Health’s Graham Street campus.

The funding will be used to build a new state-of-the-art centre allowing GV Health to expand the current cancer services it provides while introducing new programs and models of care for people in the region with cancer.

Students’ heart-warming return an inspiration to others

By David Lee IT WAS quite heart-warming sitting down with five former students of the Shepparton English Language Centre (SELC) recently. Each shared their stories of arrival in Australia and Shepparton and then spoke about why they individually decided to take up opportunities

at the centre in order to help and inspire other new arrivals.

Each has completed a Certificate III Traineeship in Education Support and now work at the centre as multicultural education aids providing assistance for parents, students teachers and each also acts as an interpreter.

Regular outing a cut above the rest for Norma

By David Lee MANY of us have our regular routines that we follow each day of the week, and that is no different for local resident, Norma Roddick who just turned 99-years-old.

Norma has spent most of her life taking a special trip on Fridays to treat herself to a hair cut, and for the last three years has enjoyed the company and talents of hairdresser, Sheridan Wright; in fact she enjoyed Sheridan so much she followed her from her previous employer to The Wright Style, which is where Norma goes for her weekly trim.

Norma said, “I think Sheridan does a magnificent job and The Wright Style hairdressing salon is a wonderful place.

“I get the ‘set’ style done when I go in.”

On top of her weekly haircut, Norma also gets regular massages and sees a ch i roprac tor a mong ot her t h i ngs , which she says is the secret to living to 99-years-old.

Sheridan said, “Norma makes my day every Friday when she comes in. I love talking with her and hearing the secrets and the gossip. We have formed quite a wonderful relationship.”

The Adviser would like to wish Norma a very happy 99th birthday.

New route for ANZAC Day march

By David Lee THIS year there are a couple of changes to make note of for the RSL’s ANZAC Day service. There will be a new route for the 11am commemorative march and the community is being invited back to the RSL following the service for a special breakfast for the first time ever.

Whilst traditionally the march has headed down Wyndham Street, this year it will run straight down Welsford Street from the RSL to Memorial Park.

Shepparton RSL president, Bob Wilkie said, “After discussions with Victoria Police and Greater Shepparton City Council we agreed for safety reasons to have the march go down Welsford Street. The Dawn Service march will still leave from the Victoria Hotel on Fryers Street and head to Memorial Park as normal.

“We are also inviting the public to come back to the RSL following the service for breakfast, which they can enjoy for just a gold coin donation, with the money going to the ANZAC Appeal.

“Although seating will be provided for Veterans, we ask you to please bring your own chairs if you would like to be seated throughout either service.

“A light lunch will also be available in the Lone Pine Function Room at a cost of $5 per person. All proceeds go to support Goulburn Valley Veteran Services.

The Digger’s Bistro will be open for lunch and dinner and Two Up has been organised from 1pm at the rear of the RSL. “There is also still time to buy your appeal pins, pens and keyrings so if you see our volunteers out and about we encourage you to pick up one of this year’s items in support of the appeal.”

By David Lee THERE was nothing quite like standing at Liberty Shepparton Service Station at its grand opening event last week.

Personally, I have never seen so many vehicles filling up at the pumps at any one time.

This was largely due to the station dropping its fuel prices by 10 cents per litre, the free food, drinks and giveaways, which included inflatable lounges, phone power banks, Schweppes glasses, tote bags and more.

But the real excitement came when t he f i rst of the g reatly anticipated Fuel Frenzies s t a r t e d , w h e r e customers Terry Sofra and were given Mary Sofra the chance (DeStefanis) to guess how much it would cost to fill up their fuel tanks and if they came close to the dollar amount they walked away with free fuel.

Local resident, Lily Bace was one such lucky customer who guessed $90 and the total cost coming to $90.77.

Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum attended the service station to officially open the upgraded facility.

Damian said, “I congratulate the Sofra family on such a momentous occasion. It is a proud moment for them I am sure.”

New deal to further support local growers A NEW deal made between SPC and Coles will see an extra 1.8 million cans of Aussie fruit produced for the Coles Brand each year.

Partnering with SPC, Coles has introduced a new range of preserved fruit in cans, including 100 percent Australian peaches, pears and apricots.

Head of Coles Brand, Mark Field said, “Coles is proud to work with an iconic Australian company such as SPC and local growers to offer products with Aussie-grown fruit.”

The new range includes Coles Brand Peaches in Syrup, Coles Brand Pears in Syrup 825g, Coles Brand Apricots in Syrup 825g and Coles Brand Fruit Salad in Syrup 825g.

SPC managing director, Reg Weine said, “It is great to see Coles continue to support local businesses and growers. The Coles brand volume will improve our factory utilisation and will also provide our growers with an additional outlet for their quality fruit.”

Shepparton train times poor PASSENGERS on the Shepparton line are on slow, unreliable trains according to the latest V/ Line figures. The line has continued its poor performance with just 83.7 percent of services running on time last month, falling far short of the target of 92 percent.

Across all regional lines, just 84.4 percent of services ran on time in March. V/Line figures also show that over the past five years, just 86.2 percent of services made it to their destination on time, leaving c om mut er s on ne a rly 57, 0 0 0 services running late.

Shadow M i n ister for P ubl ic Transport (Regional), Steph Ryan said the (Shepparton) line had failed to meet punctuality targets every month since August 2017.

“Better rail connections between r e g i o n a l c o m m u n i t i e s wo u l d transform regional Victoria making it possible to live in one town and work in another but that won’t happen while Labor treats us as second class citizens,” Ms Ryan said.

Telling stories through interesting art ATTENDEES of the Converge event as part of last month’s Shepparton Festival were given the chance to dabble in some interesting art techniques, with the Splinter Contemporary Artists delivering two free community art activities.

The ‘Weaving our stories together’ and ‘Stories through clay’ activities was received well, with the results to be displayed in a new exhibition at Kyabram Town Hall Gallery, with the title Sharing Stories.

Splinter Contemporary Artists publicity officer, Beverly Dowd said, “Come along and see the completed woven forms, images, words and

photographs. Maybe you will see something you contributed to.

“On that Saturday participants wove coloured lengths of fabric and yarn through suspended Murray Cray pots and transformed balls of clay into bird forms. Both opportunities elicited art-making and story-sharing by members of the community – each small act contributing to a larger outcome of art, understanding, and connection.”

Sharing Stories will officially open at the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery in Allan Street, Kyabram on Saturday, May 18 at 2pm and will run until August 5.

Election called with enrolling deadline now approaching THE federal election has been announced and Australians must act now to ensure they are enrolled before the deadline of 8pm on April 18, 2019.

All Australian citizens aged 18 years and over are required by law to enrol and vote in the May 18 federal election.

Electoral commissioner, Tom Rogers said, “Enrolling and voting is compulsory. If you are not enrolled, you can’t vote in the 2019 federal election.

“Australians must also update their address details on the electoral roll if they have moved, or changed their name. If they’re not sure of their current status – check online via the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC)

“A record 96.5 percent of eligible Australians are currently enrolled, which is an extraordinary achievement.

At the same time, there are still people who remain unenrolled who need to take action before the deadline of 8pm this Thursday, April 18.”

An Easter festival worth rushing to ENJOY a family day out in historic Rushworth this Easter Saturday with the Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival. With a variety of market stalls, art exhibitions and a traditional wood raffle on offer; you’re spoiled for choice and for things to do.

A history of local netball

SHEPPARTON has a long-standing love of netball and as the 2019 season commences, we have decided to look back over the sport’s lengthy history.

Netball has a mysterious local history that can be traced back to around 1934 when ladies’ basketball commenced in Shepparton. Over the years, there have been many changes to the sport that has only increased in popularity, with local history of the sport sometimes quite difficult to track down.

Re-animating art for contemporary audiences THE first major solo exhibition for artist, Arlo Mountford is coming to Shepparton from April 18 to June 10.

Melbourne-based, English-born artist, Arlo Mountford’s exhibition ‘Deep Revolt’ at the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM), playfully probes the terms in which we engage with art and the way meaning can be twisted, through a contemporary lens.

The exhibition is the only showing of Mountford’s works in Victoria and features large-scale interactive installations with video, animation and sound, drawings and sculpture, challenging the ideas of time, history and our contemporary norms through a 14 year span of his work.

Amusing, strange and laden with art and contemporary culture references, his animated films are hand drawn with a mouse directly into a computer. He reimagines both real and created spaces from the art world, digitally reconstructing the interiors of iconic museums or retracing the brushstrokes of European masterpieces well known and loved for centuries.

This process allows him to experience art with fresh eyes and offer new readings of its ongoing meaning and relevance in contemporary society.

SAM director, Dr Rebecca Coates said, “Mountford mashes up visual culture in order to engage with and reflect on our contemporary world. Time and history are common themes.

Arlo’s work is complex and contains varying dimensions of joy, humour, history and horror making it hugely engaging for a wide audience.

“The exhibition will appeal to a generation where making videos, memes and text clips for social media is now second nature to communicate and comment on the world.”

Get hunting for Easter yummies INTO its second day, the KidsTown Easter Egg-stravaganza has already at t rac ted ma ny members of t he community who are on the hunt to Easter yummies.

Happening today and tomorrow at KidsTown, there is still a chance to snag part of the 10,000 Easter eggs that are up for grabs.

“The train will make its way around the landscaped miniature train track, giving the children a chance to take in the views of KidsTown’s five-acre adventure playground.”

The Easter Bunny will make an appearance at the start of each hunt and will hang around for photos while the hunts are happening.

A $3 registration fee is required for the Easter egg hunt, or $5 if participants wish to have a go on the miniature train ride.

Working towards reducing e-waste ARRANGEMENTS are currently being made with key infrastructure works to prepare for the state-wide ban on electronic-waste (e-waste) entering landfills, which comes into effect on July 1 this year.

E-waste is growing up to three times faster than general municipal waste in Australia and is the fastest growing waste item in landfills worldwide. E-waste refers to anything with a plug, battery or cord which is no longer working or wanted.

Many electronic products contain hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, arsenic or phosphor and when left in landfills, these materials can leach into groundwater and soil, or release into the air, creating long term contamination issues and human health issues.

With the help of the Victorian Government funding, Greater Shepparton City Council will be working in partnership with Sustainability Victoria and the Goulburn Valley Waste and Resource Recovery Group to upgrade Shepparton’s Resource Recovery Centre to ensure safe handling and disposal of various kinds of e-waste.

Greater Shepparton City Council manager works and waste, Janelle Bunfield said the upgrades included renovations to provide weatherproof containments for e-waste items.

“Sustainability Victoria awarded council a grant of $145,000 as part of their multi-million dollar investment into upgrading state-wide facilities,” Mrs Bunfield said.

Duo of projects to make Shepparton “a great place to live, work and invest in”

By David Lee THE Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack was in town last week and took the opportunity to visit the site for the new SAM at Victoria Park Lake. But he wasn’t there just to talk about the museum’s new construction; he also spoke about the benefits of the stage one bypass funding.

With bulldozers expected on the new SA M site by the end of the month, Kane C o n s t r u c t io n s said that they would be going approx i m at ely 3 0 m dow n to provide a good foundation dept h for t he new SA M; a project that the whole of Australia is Michael McCormack watching.

The first stage of bypass funding has set the $1.3B project in motion, with McCormack saying both projects will help to increase the beauty that is Shepparton.

“There is no more exciting project in all of Australia right now than SAM,” McCormack said.

“It’s going to attract visitors to the town and they will not only come back themselves, but they will tell others who will visit.

“It will help put Shepparton even further on the map and I am proud to be a part of this project.

Stuart Murray Canal gates in line for important upgrade INFRASTRUCTURE that is important to the operation of the Stuart Murray Canal at Nagambie is set to undergo winter upgrade works to ensure the reliability of water delivery to Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) customers.

The canal, located off the Goulburn Weir, is used to transfer water to parts of the Central Goulburn irrigation area and the Waranga Basin water storage.

The works, to commence in mid-May with completion expected by early July, will take place during the gravity irrigation off-season and will not affect irrigation customers.

GMW manager dams operations, Scott Wikman said, “The water transfer is controlled by an off-take regulator, which has four radial gates.

“These gates were installed in 1967 and have come to the end

of their operating life.”

To allow for the works, the Stuart Murray Canal will be drained. To ensure GMW can harvest water during this period, GMW will also temporarily lower Lake Nagambie’s water level by up 50cm or 0.5m during the works.

“All stakeholders are again being alerted to the lake lowering in advance of this year’s gate replacement,” Mr Wikman said.

“When the works are complete, the lake will be returned to its normal level.”

The Goulburn Weir and its adjoining recreational area will remain open and accessible throughout the upgrade; however, for safety reasons, the Stuart Murray Canal’s offtake structure, walkover and adjoining carpark will be closed from May 24 to July 12, 2019.

$58M pledge to curb youth unemployment WITH the election looming, pledges have already begun with Prime Minister, Scott Morrison promising a $58M plan to curb youth unemployment and Shepparton has been targeted.

As part of the plan, 10 training hubs will be established in areas with the highest youth unemployment, including Shepparton, Townsville, Burnie, Gosford and Grafton.

The hubs will work with local schools and employers to identify skills demands and encourage students to sign up for

vocational training.

The $58M will also include 400 Vocational Education and Training ( V ET) scholarships. Wor th up to $17,500 each, the scholarships will be open to people aged 15 to 24 in the chosen locations to study from certificate III to advanced diploma level.

With the Shepparton region being named as having the second highest youth unemployment rate in Victoria, at 17.5 percent, the pledge couldn’t come at a more needed time.

SIX new directors have been appointed to the Shepparton Art Museum (SAM) Limited board, each of whom come with extensive experience to assist in guiding the future of the new SAM. The new directors include Jeannie Furphy, Jo Gartner, Stephen Merrylees, Kimberley Moulton, Drew Pettifer and Naomi Ryan.

The six will join Greater Shepparton City Council nominated position holders, Peter Harriott and Chris Teitzel as well as SAM Foundation representative, John Head.

Di re c tor a nd compa ny s e cre t a r y, Chris Teitzel said SAM Limited has been established as a company limited by

guarantee to operate the SAM as a public art museum.

“SAM Ltd has established a board with great diversity of skills and backgrounds.

We have representatives from the legal, art, indigenous, community, financial, business, marketing and education sectors,” Mr Teitzel said.

“All of the board are strongly connected to Greater Shepparton.

“This is a great opportunity for skilled, experienced and knowledgeable people to direct the new SAM to provide an inspiring, community hub for locals to meet and socialise.”

Scammers are getting crafty, so be warned IN TODAY’S day and age it is unfortunate that we have to keep an eye out for people who try to find ways to steal our hard earned money, and these scammers are finding ways to make their scams more believable.

Two recent scams that have been making the rounds are a call for concern, with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and NBN Co warning locals that scammers are impersonating their organisations.

New information has been published recently on the NBN Co website to help residents understand how to identify and avoid scammers posing as the company.

The advice follows an 84 percent overall increase in enquiries about suspected scams made to the wholesaler’s contact centre since October 2018, with approximately 24 percent of those calls originating from residents in Victoria.

Head of NBN local for Victoria and Tasmania, Ebony Aitkin said, “We urge residents and businesses to be vigilant of callers claiming to be from NBN Co requesting personal or financial information.

“We will never make unsolicited calls or door knock to sell broadband services to the public.

“We will never request remote access to a resident’s computer and we will never make unsolicited requests for payment or financial information.

“Protect yourself by verifying who are you are talking to. If in doubt, hang up and call your retail service provider customer service centre to check if the call is legitimate.”

ATO assistant commissioner, Gavin Siebert said that scammers have adopted ‘robocall’ technology to target taxpayers across the country.

“Scammers are sending pre-recorded messages in record numbers and are manipulating caller identification so that your phone displays a legitimate ATO phone number despite coming from an overseas scammer,” Gavin said.

“Our calls do not show a number on caller ID nor do we use pre-recorded messages.”

The ATO has received 40,225 reports of impersonation scams so far in 2019 with just over $1M in losses.

“Taxpayers should be wary of any unexpected phone call, text message or email claiming to be from the tax office.

While we may contact you in these ways, if it doesn’t seem right, independently find our phone number and check if the contact was legitimate. If you receive a pre-recorded message claiming to be from us either hang up or simply delete the voicemail,” Gavin said.

Increase in road fatalities a worrying trend WITH the school holidays in full swing and the Easter and ANZAC Day holidays just around the corner, there is a call out for locals to take extra care on the roads.

With six fatalities on Greater Shepparton’s roads so far this year and 90 on Victorian roads, compared to two in Greater Shepparton this time last year and 58 across Victoria, the increase is a worrying trend.

Last year Victoria recorded its lowest ever number of road deaths in a calendar year, but 2019 has already shown that there is no room for complacency.

According to Transport Accident Commission (TAC) statistics, regional roads and country people are still over-represented in road deaths.

Since 2016, the Labor Government has been upgrading the safety of 20 high-risk regional roads as part of the $1.4B Towards Zero Action Plan.

Around two thirds of people who die in crashes on regional

roads are people who live in regional Victoria; country people die on country roads.

Minister for Roads, Road Safety and TAC, Jaala Pulford said, “We are deeply concerned about the heartbreaking start to the year on our roads and one of our biggest concerns is the disproportionate number of deaths in regional areas.

“We’re urging all Victorians to look out for each other on the roads, plan ahead, be patient and make safe choices to ensure everyone gets to where they’re going safely.”

TAC chief executive officer, Joe Calafiore said, “Most of the deaths on our roads this year have been a result of a simple mistake, and on a high-speed regional road, mistakes often lead to fatal consequences.

“Our message to motorists is to ease up and make safe decisions when they’re using the roads, avoid fatigue, avoiding drink and drug driving, avoid distractions and slow down.”

“A great deal has changed in horticulture in 50 years. These days, we hone in on benchmarks like how much fruit can we grow per megalitre of water,” Chris said.

“There wasn’t that much demand on the system decades ago so it was viable to run a channel 20km from the main supply to a handful of producers.

“The upgrade concept was visionary and those involved with the early stages of planning it have helped protect our water supply, keep it affordable and available.”

Students get up close and personal with synthetic human A SY N T HET IC human worth almost $170,000 has made the long trip from Florida to Benalla in a bid to benefit students studying Health & Community Services courses at GOTAFE. T h e hu m a n a n ato my t e c h nolo g y model, which was developed by American company, SynDaver Labs, was purchased with f u nding from the Victorian Government’s Regional and Specialist Training Fund (RSTF).

A Sectra Table, which is an interactive learning and teaching tool that uses real anatomy and clinical cases to develop critical thinking in critical training was also purchased through RTSF grant funding.

This will be used for all applications across the health educational sector.

The RSTF program supports training for specific skills in regional and specialist areas that are not being met by the current

training market.

GOTAFE’s interim education executive director, Louise Pearce said GOTAFE was fortunate to be the only registered training organisation in Australia to have the SynDaver resource.

organisation to utilise a Sectra Table in our training programs. Up until now, it was a resource only available in university degree programs.

“Our students will benefit enormously from being able to learn with the anatomy model and the interactive workstation.”

Giving is the best gift this Easter A LOW number of appointments at the Shepparton Blood Donor Centre over the Easter and ANZAC Day public holidays has prompted the Australian Red Cross Blood Service to launch an Easter blood drive calling on good eggs to come forward and donate.

The Shepparton donor centre still needs over 100 extra donors between April 20 and 27 to bolster supplies for cancer and road trauma patients this Easter.

Locals are encouraged to spare just an hour of their time over the Easter break to help save up to three lives.

Blood Service spokesperson, Doug Allen said that Easter was one of the most challenging times of the year to collect blood.

“The need for blood never takes a break yet we know that donor numbers are traditionally low at Easter,” Doug said.

“A component of blood called platelets has a shelf life of only five days, so it’s important that blood is donated over and immediately after the Easter break.

“Cancer patients in particular rely upon platelets to help them through their chemotherapy treatments.

“That’s why we need 100 Shepparton residents to make an appointment to give blood at the Shepparton Donor Centre.”

$4M in funding to help the region’s youth GV HEALT H’S Community Health@ GV Health site in Corio Street is set to receive a $4M redevelopment of its existing treatment and therapy areas and see a new purpose-built Children and Young Person’s Service Hub established thanks to funding from the government.

The redevelopment will enable GV Health to provide consolidated care for children and young people through a Children and Young Person’s Hub allowing health professionals and a range of services to be co-located G V H e a lt h’s ex i s t i ng , pae d i at r ic c o m mu n i t y h e a l t h s e r v i c e s , E a rl y

Childhood Intervention Services and Victorian Paediatric Rehabilitation Service already at Corio Street will be integrated with the paediatric services from Graham Street once the works are completed.

GV Health chief executive, Matt Sharp said the expansion of the Community Health@GV Health site would enable the relocation of primary care services from the GV Health site at Graham Street consisting of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) services and related ambulatory paediatric services. In addition, the headspace service will also be relocated from High Street.

“Having this service together in one space in the middle of the Shepparton CBD allows us to deliver quality care which will lead to better health outcomes and improved health outcomes in our community,” Mr Sharp said.

Artist reveals meaning behind artwork LOCAL residents were given the opportunity to hear from the latest SAM Drawing Wall artist, Steven Rhall recently, where he revealed the meaning behind his artwork titled ‘AT THIS SITE.’ His work, which depicts the words AT THIS SITE in white on a white backdrop making it almost invisible, is a unique drawing wall installation acting as a signpost that reflects on Australia’s history and the absence of Aboriginal voice.

Rhall said, “With my works, I often respond to the context of permissions. A lot of permissions are very much about a theme and a place. This one was very much open ended…it’s

about this site. AT THIS SITE is not too much unlike asking ‘why are you reading this,’ it is quite open.

“There are many things to consider such as how am I going to respond to this?

“This site is open, has a café and members of the public using the space, so this was one of the first ideas I had in terms of a potential to do a much more performative work with this space.”

Students’ heart-warming return an inspiration to others continued from front page

By David Lee ARRIVING at the centre as a student in 2010, Reza Kareen has come from Pakistan and after finishing VCE, he took a gap year before going to study civil engineering at university in Melbourne. Reza then joined the centre in 2017.

Reza said, “SELC is like a family with wonderful staff and an amazing coordinator who is very helpful. They support us and build our skills. We are here today because of them. They have helped us learn a lot.

“In the future, we hope to be good role models for other kids, who can see that we came to Australia and have worked very hard to get us to where we are.”

Ramzan Khair Ali went to the centre as a student in 2011 and is an Afghani who grew up in Pakistan. In 2012 he started high school and graduated in 2016 before starting work at SELC. Ramzan said, “SELC really is like a family.”

Mustafa Rohani was a student at the centre in 2011 and came to Australia with no English speaking skills and very little schooling. Just prior to moving to Australia, Mustafa lived in Pakistan.

Mustafa said, “To help support my family here, I started working at KFC and I am still there. In 2012, I went to high school and graduated in 2014 and one day I came past

SELC to say hello and they said they were looking for someone to help and I decided to do it.

“I had the opportunities to start a great life here which I am really grateful for that.

So I came back to SELC because I wanted to give back to the community.”

After starting as a student with the centre in 2016, Mariyam Jumakhan graduated high school last year and during her VCAL studies, carried out work placement at SELC for one week.

Mariyam said, “When I completed my work experience I was approached by SELC to take up a position with the team. I was casual for two months last year and then this year I began my training in Certificate III Traineeship in Education Support.

“We love giving back to the community and helping those who are coming into the centre. We have experienced what they are experiencing coming in and it is great to be able to help them transition.”

Although she wasn’t a full time student at the centre, Muzhgan Qazikhil attended the centre on Wednesdays for homework club and is from Afghanistan, and has been with the centre for six years.

Muzhgan said, “After I finished high school I came to SELC to complete some volunteer work and after that they asked me to join the team.

“I love SELC. It’s a relaxing place. I feel as though it is my second home.”

$26M in funding a big step forward for cancer treatment G V H e a l t h b o a rd c h a i r, R e b e c c a Woolstencroft said, “This is a very important step in ensuring we have the facilities required to meet the needs of people across the Goulburn Valley when it comes to treating cancer.

“The new building will provide a major expansion of medical day oncology services, additional clinical spaces for medical specialists, nursing specialists and allied health professionals to deliver contemporary and best practice cancer services to our entire region.”

GV Health chief executive, Matt Sharp said that while the Peter Copulos Cancer & Wellness Centre is a wonderful facility for the region, increased demand for services exists and newer models of care are needed.

“The new Integrated Cancer Centre building will be three to four times the size of our current cancer centre building. This will allow us to deliver best practice models of care and to support people through their cancer treatment and recovery by having all wellbeing services and expanded medical, clinical nursing and allied health care under one roof,” Mr Sharp said.

Federal Member for Murray, Damian Drum said, “For most patients, fighting a cancer battle would be the toughest time of their life.

I look forward to seeing this major expansion to cancer services transform the experience of those affected by cancer in our region.”

Bin collection changes for Easter W ITH the Easter break approaching, Greater Shepparton City Council is advising residents that there will be no bin collection on Friday, April 19.

Due to the Cosgrove Landfill and all three Resource Recovery Centres being closed for Good Friday, bins will instead be collected on Saturday, April 20.

Fishing at the top end

By David Lee FOR locals, Kerry Morse, husband, Alan and son, Corey, it was a chance to explore the outback at the top end, but while there they discovered a million-dollar reason to visit Darwin and surrounds.

The trio first spent three nights in Darwin at C2 Esplanade Serviced Apartments, with Kerry recommending the accommodation to anybody thinking of heading north, saying they were spacious and modern with harbour views and only a close walk to shops and restaurants. It was wonderful in the top end, with the warm balmy Darwin nights providing the perfect opportunity to enjoy eating outside in the many open-air restaurants.

During their stay in Darwin, they headed out on the Darwin Harbour for a morning fishing trip, and while they enjoyed cruising around pulling in plenty of Golden Snapper and Cod, the Barramundi eluded them.

While on the charter they heard about the annual Million Dollar Fish competition that was about to start, and so the family made the decision to add that to their itinerary.

Once registered you have a chance to catch a tagged one million-dollar Barramundi.

In 2018 five of the $1M fish were released along with 100 $10,000 dollar fish, and with those odds, the Morse family were keen to catch a ‘Barra.’

While they didn’t end up catching the million-dollar fish, Alan showed off his skills and managed to finally net three Barramundi.

Next they hired a Nissan X Trail for seven nights and set off early for the drive to Jabiru in Kakadu National Park (approximately 250km from Darwin). With three nights booked in Jabiru this was the perfect base for exploring Kakadu.

Kerry said an interesting place to visit while there was the Cahills Crossing on the East Alligator River. From there you are able to spot many crocodiles feeding on fish with the incoming tide. You can see just how many there are with the family

spotting about 10 saltwater crocodiles in the murky water alone, and you can bet there are many, many more hiding beneath the water’s surface.

They then left Jabiru and headed south to Katherine. Taking a detour off the main road they took the opportunity to travel over a very dusty and corrugated road to visit Gunlom Falls. Although they had been to Gunlom Falls before, this was definitely the highlight of the trip and the Morse’s say it was an area they would have loved to have had the chance to stay longer at.

They moved on, staying three nights in Katherine, spending their first morning on a three hour cruise at Katherine Gorge. When booking the cruise, it included time for a swim in the gorge and the trio were glad it did, as they were able to take in the beauty of the cliffs and surrounding gorge.

On the way back to Darwin they visited the beautiful falls and waterhole at Florence Falls in Litchfield National Park. It was a lot busier than they expected. You are able to swim right under the waterfall and listen to the thunderous noise of the water falling on and around you.

They also visited Berry Springs for a swim on the way back to Darwin, a waterhole well worth a visit. Luck smiled on them, with the waterhole being closed the following day due to a crocodile sighting.

There are many must dos in Darwin including having a meal at Stokes Hill Wharf, sitting back with a drink and movie at the deckchair cinema, taking a stroll around the Mindil Beach Sunset Marke, the Darwin Military Museum and taking in the famous Cyclone Tracy exhibit at the museum and art gallery.

Finishing off the trip with four nights back in Darwin, Kerry, Alan and Corey got on their third fishing charter, which they say was a long day and actually took them back into Kakadu to Corroboree Billabong; a stunning area with lots of wildlife and vegetation, including lots of pink water lilies; a wonderful finish to a trip to the top end.

AS WE predicted in our season preview, this year looks like being one of the closest ever with upsets and close games galore in the first two rounds.

While it is too early in the season to take much notice of the ladder, seeing two of the bottom three sides of last year being one win and one loss just shows how even the competition is.

Mooroopna had a fantastic win at Mansfield, who were tipped to finish high on the ladder this year.

One thing that looks like it may not change is the dominance of Kyabram. They were challenged in round one against Tatura

who is looking to be a contender and demolished Shepparton last Saturday night in a replay of the 2018 decider. That won`t relieve the pain of last years grand final loss but you get the feeling only two weeks in, the Bomber machine is as powerful as ever and could go the season again without a loss.

At the other end of the ladder, a greatly improved performance by that Swans was pleasing to see and shows they will not be a pushover. Rochester is another winless side after two games and has been unlucky. They won`t be happy with their start and will look to bounce back quickly.

Bushrangers’ charging defeat by Oakleigh THE Murray Bushrangers battled hard all game in their Round 6 NAB League defeat at the hands of Oakleigh Chargers by 55 points at Warrawee Park, Oakleigh.

Charli Boschetti kicked truly in the first minute of play to give the Bushies the start they wanted and Chelsea Styan was rewarded for her crunching tackle, surprising her opponent as she ran onto the ground from the bench. Tali Verhoeven scored another from 45 to keep the scores even at two goals a piece at the first change.

The second quarter saw the Bushies defence under pressure as the Chargers continued to add to their inside 50 entries, with the Bushrangers struggling to get the ball clear and when they did, only to have

the ball come straight back as the Chargers continued to attack.

The Bushrangers were still well and truly in the game after the main break.

Lily Sharp and Sophie Locke’s relentless tackling continued to give their teammates opportunities but the Chargers put their foot down, keeping the Bushies scoreless and were outclassed by skill, decision making, attack on the footy and a greater effort all over the ground going into the last break with a handy six goal advantage.

T he f i n a l qu a r ter aga i n saw t he Bushrangers defence under enormous attack with Kate Adams and Abby Favell in the thick of the action at every contest, endeavouring to move the ball forward. The

Chargers had more numbers around the footy catching the Bushies flat footed and continued to pepper the goals blowing the margin out to 55 points and a comfortable win, leaving the Bushrangers with plenty of work to do for the rest of the season.

With a general bye this weekend for Easter, the girls will look to regroup going into the final three NAB League rounds of the 2019 season.

Local players take it to big stage MURRAY Bushrangers players, Elijah Hollands and Ethan Baxter have been selected to represent an Australian Under 17 representative team to play a New Zealand Open team on Saturday, April 27. They will face off against the New Zealand side at Marvel Stadium in the curtain-raiser to the St Kilda and Adelaide clash.

The players will come together under coach, Luke Power in Melbourne on Wednesday, April 24 for a training camp, leading into the Saturday match.

Both Elijah and Ethan represented the Vic Country Under 16 team in 2018.

Lachlan Ash has also been selected in the under 18 Australian representative game to play the Casey Scorpions at the MCG on Saturday, April 20 as a curtain raiser to the Melbourne v St Kilda game.

Lachlan is a member of the Academy system and co-captain of the Murray Bushrangers Under 18s and was also recently announced as co-captain of the Vic Country Academy.
