I’m listening, I’m hearing and I have the policy positions and passion to deliver for the communities of Nicholls. Having an Independent in the former coalition state seat of Shepparton has forced the major parties to sit up and listen to us – let’s replicate that federally.

WHAT IS YOUR PLAN OF ACTION TO GIVE THE PEOPLE OF MURRAY/NICHOLLS THE THINGS THAT THEY BELIEVE ARE IMPORTANT?

In short – to work hard. I’ve been representing the interests of our community all of my working life. I’ve visited every town in the electorate already during this campaign and I have a range of arguments to convince whoever is in government to provide what we need and deserve.

Not having a ‘party line’ to adhere to will make it far easier for me to provide real representation for the Goulburn-Murray region.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE MDBP?

It was supposedly created to save the environment, yet they’re trying to push so much water through that the Barmah Choke is silting up, the Barmah Forest is being flooded too often and at the wrong time of year and the native fish breeding areas in the Goulburn are affected by cold-water pollution – and that’s just in our region.

Our farmers are struggling, our towns are contracting, people are going out of business – all because the major parties want to secure seats in Adelaide.

We need to stop the basin plan, fix the issues with carryover and inter-valley transfer, and hold a royal commission to punish wrongdoing and find an equitable way forward.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPIC YOU HAVE HEARD THE ELECTORATE TALKING ABOUT?

Water, water and water – directly or indirectly, it affects us all. If our primary producers fall over – as is happening in dairy – then our processors will too and they’ll take so many businesses and government services with them.

Equally important is mental health – increased inpatient services, via stage two of the GV Health upgrade and we need to get the number of subsidised psychology visits back up to 18, at least.

If elected, I will also self-fund mental health first aid education right across the electorate, so that our community is better equipped to recognise when someone is experiencing mental ill-health and can ensure they get the help they need.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE ELECTORATE?

When people hear ‘Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong’ they think of strong regional centres with ample services and of cities that showcase their history and their story to visitors. I want Shepparton on that list.

When people think of the Clare, Barossa or Yarra Valleys, they think food, wine and fun. I want the Goulburn and Murray Valleys included in that list.

There is so much potential here, we just need to join forces – political, community and business – to see that potential realised.

Here to listen and be your voice in parliament.

WHAT IS YOUR PLAN OF ACTION TO GIVE THE PEOPLE OF MURRAY/NICHOLLS THE THINGS THAT THEY BELIEVE ARE IMPORTANT?

First listen to them. I cannot stress how important it is to actually listen to people and look at their situation through their eyes. Empathising with the people of your electorate is something many politicians seem to miss. If they did listen and tried to understand how the people actually feel, struggle, work and generally lived then I think our country would perhaps be governed quite differently. I believe in treating others as I want myself to be treated. And I am not at all a dishonest person or someone that feels gratification of wealth at the cost of others. If someone comes to me asking for help I listen, study the issue and work with that person/s to achieve an outcome.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THE MDBP?

I think that it is a system that has no positive outcome for our seat and many others that rely on the Murray Darling Basin. Both for the people and the environment. It is flawed.

It needs a Royal Commission into it. The ‘science’ into it is (in my own opinion and many others I have spoken to on the reports) total bogus!

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPIC YOU HAVE HEARD THE ELECTORATE TALKING ABOUT?

Water! It is the hot topic on everyone’s lips and for good reason. Our land is parched, farms are closing down in every corner of the seat, our agricultural production has dropped immensely and the ripple effect from the lack of business on the land is seeping into town. Many stores are laying off staff because the economy is feeling the impact. Local families with young, hardworking parents are packing up and leaving the seat all together even because of the water!

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE ELECTORATE?

A rehydrated landscape with water being reattached to the land. Many exhausted farmers don’t believe this will ever happen.

I don’t feel that way. Why? Because I know I will try every avenue I have to until I see it happen. We have an amazing irrigation infrastructure that farmers pay to have access to and they have a constitutional right to water as irrigators. Yet somehow they are having to pay insane amounts of money for that water. I believe it is unjustified and we deserve better from our government. Much better.

Kialla Park works set to begin

By David Lee WORKS to redevelop Kialla Park Recreation Reserve Main Oval will soon begin following the acceptance of the tender submitted

by Jarvis Delahey Contractors.

The works will see the removal of the existing turf surface, goalposts, irrigations system and fencing. A new growing medium, irrigation system, oval fence, goalposts and stormwater drainage will all be installed under the contract.

Jarvis Delahey director, Richard Jarvis said, “It is pleasing to see that this project has been awarded locally. We are looking

forward to working on a project that will be a great community asset.”

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said, “Jarvis Delahey Contractors are a local company, and it is nice to know the money will be staying in our region.

“We are always on a mission to keep our sporting and leisure facilities at a high standard.

“These works will ensure Kialla Park Recreation Reserve is a safe and suitable place for sporting groups or local residents who wish to use it.”

Local farmers to save big on water use THE local Damianopoulos family are set to slash the water use by 80 percent on their produce farm thanks to $400,000 in funding provided through the Coles Nurture Fund program.

The funding will be used to introduce groundbreaking technology to the business’ cool rooms that will control the humidity.

After conducting extensive research in Italy, brothers, Con and Philip Damianopoulos identified Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere (DCA) cool room technology as the most effective way to preserve their apples and pears at the highest quality, while removing the need for high volume of plastic and water usage during the storing process.

Thanks to the funding they will be one of the first pear growers in Australia to purchase equipment, which will regulate the humidity of fruit and limit water use.

Philip said, “Consumers now expect the quality of their fruit to be 100 percent perfect, 100 percent of the time. They expect it to taste amazing and look good and they want this all year-round. This new technology will remove the impact of dehydration and ensure that the fruit comes out just as nice as the day we picked it.”

This year, the ANZAC Day march route went down Welsford Street for the first time.

Shepparton RSL president, Bob Wilkie said, “We had a record crowd at the dawn service.

It was amazing. I estimate there was between 3,000 and 4,000 people there. The main service we had the same numbers as last year, which is good to see. The Mooroopna service had the largest crowd they have seen, particularly the younger people. It’s great to see so many young Australians at these services. The breakfast went well afterward as well, which was fantastic. Next year we are looking at live streaming the dawn service into aged care facilities.”

Project accelerates with in-season works at Cobram east COBRAM East landowners were connected to the modernised irrigation system via a bypass pump while upgrade works were rolled-out in-season recently.

To accelerate progress on the Connections Project, landowner agreements now feature innovative ways to deliver works combined with continuous water delivery.

At this site, 500m of temporary hose, connected to a bypass pump, was set-up to carry water from the state-of-the-art automated system as further works proceeded.

About 490m of high-density polyethylene pipe was then dropped into a new trench while the old channel was backfilled. The new pipeline will save 73ML of water each year.

Six inaccurate Dethridge Wheels were replaced with 300mm closed conduit meters while one was rationalised.

Connections Project director, Frank Fisseler said, “By assessing the unique needs of these irrigators, a solution was reached allowing works to continue in-season while landowners continued to irrigate.

“To move from a manually operated system to a fully automated irrigation delivery system, we’re creating a $2B channel system with better measurement and management of water flows.”

Entertainment beyond the solar system

THE EMPEROR HAS NO MONEY Dear Editor, The man who would be Prime Minister, Bill Shorten has decided to tax his way to prosperity for our constituents, by effectively redistributing from your pocket to his pocket. All under the guise that we know better than you how your money should be spent.

Really? When Bill was part of the Rudd/ Gillard/ Swan team they took your money, a $20B surplus and directed towards such gems as the NBN, pink batts, school halls and $900 cheques. That left the budget very quickly in deficit to the tune of $250B. It meant vital cancer drugs and treatments were unable to be offered under Medicare due to a lack of funding. Bill Shorten is now offering the public to pay for those cancer treatments now the budget is back in surplus. A coincidence?

Treasury costings for Bill’s $387B tax grab will leave each of us around $5,400 out of pocket per annum over the next ten years. Higher taxes are a massive disincentive for people to work, invest and generate productivity. So the question for the voting public will you be better or worse off under his leadership?

Have your say on council’s budget THE community is being urged to review and make comment on the 2019/2020 draft budget, and can do so until Friday, May 24.

This year total revenue from general rates and municipal charge will increase by 2.5 percent. This is in line with the order by the minister for local government under the Fair Go Rates System. The total projected capital works program will be $71.08M, of which highlights include funding for the new Shepparton Art Museum, Maude Street upgrade and Balaclava/Verney/Dookie intersection upgrade.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said this budget was financially responsible and put council into a healthy and sustainable financial position.

“Council delivers more than 120 services to our community and we need to achieve a balance between those services, the community desires and the funds available, which is an ongoing challenge,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

“I encourage you to take a look at the budget and make a submission; everyone’s opinion is important and it is a great way to bring your ideas to council for consideration.”

Council is holding two information sessions open for the public to attend to obtain a greater understanding of the budget process. These are being held on May 13 at 3pm and 5:30pm at the council offices.

Special event to pay tribute to local heritage

By David Lee TRIBUTE is set to be paid to our literary heritage through a special presentation being held by Bush Lit Productions, ‘Australia As She Was.’ The photo art exhibition launch will take place at the Mechanics Institute, 277 Wyndham Street, Shepparton on Friday, May 17 from 6:30pm.

The launch event will feature stories in film by Henry Lawson, titled ‘That There Dog O Mine’ and ‘Loaded Dog,’ as well as readings from early Australian poet, C.J. Dennis by John Derum, Charlotte Lindsay with Her Story and former local, journalist and author, Anson Cameron, who will present a talk titled ‘Film Financing: Fraught with Furphys.’

The night will also see the launch of a historical photo exhibit from L ost Sheppar ton S crolls, ‘T he Changing Face of Shepparton.’

Event organiser, Andrew Furphy said, “I had been playing with film for about four or five years now and I know that the films played on the night will resonate with people.

“I decided to do this to help raise some funds for the new SAM. “T he Changing Face of Shepparton is also an interesting exhibition that I am sure people will enjoy.

“I have a quest to try and get young people to get interested in early Australian literature and this is all a part of that.”

The concert is performed by Turaton Music Company choir and is titled ‘From The Prairie to The Outback,’ a performance of country theme music by the choir and featured soloists.

Turaton music director, Shirley Ferguson said, “The show features songs you will enjoy, like Black Hills of Dakota, Secret Love, Oklahoma, Waltzing Matilda, Take Me Home Country Roads, King of The Road and a special hillbilly’s skit. It will be a two-hour performance with intermission and supper included.

THE recent appointment of new general manager, Lachlan Gordon to the Kyabram Fauna Park will help see the park’s future successes through his wealth of knowledge and experience.

Mr Gordon’s previous roles include working in the zoological industry for 12 years at attractions including Australia Zoo, Cairns Safari Park, Cairns Tropical Zoo and Paradise Country.

Since 2016, Mr Gordon has been park curator of Oakvale Wildlife Park in New South Wales.

Hidden

THIS was the opportunity for Sharyn Oxenbury and Peter Reid of Mooroopna to experience all that Cinque Terre has to offer.

They had always wanted to visit this part of Italy with its coloured houses clinging to the cliffs over the sea below, so Peter decided to look into it and found a tour called Hidden Italy with self-guided walks through the villages of Cinque Terre.

They flew to Milan and took a train to Levanto. The walk would take them to all five villages with hotel stays and as they walked their luggage would be sent on to the next hotel.

Sharyn just loved the feel of each village. The local food was wonderful and the people very friendly. Most spoke English and if they didn’t they seemed to understand anyway with much nodding and smiles.

Peter loved the walks which were mainly on small dirt tracks with the sea below but it wasn’t a straight line, you had the climb 200 to 300 steps at times before reaching your destination.

Reaching Monterosso they stayed for two nights and again there was great food. Sharyn tried the anchovies, which were not like the ones in a bottle at home…these were big and fresh you could have them done in egg and breadcrumbs. Indeed you could have them six ways and she did.

At each town there was so much to see with the shops and little cafés to experience and always that stunning view out to sea.

On the way to Vernazza the walks took them through the backyards of homes and right through vegetable gardens.

Italy

Vernazza was such a pretty place with its cobble stone streets and coloured shops and homes.

They walked to Riomaggiore via Corniglisa. The track took them to the top of the mountain where they walked through a forest then came out the other side to those views of the ocean below.

They had two days at their destination so they took a ferry ride to Palmaria Island where they did another 12km loop walk.

All along the way Sharyn found the food wonderful. These are fishing villages and the seafood was in abundance and cooked to perfection.

The walk was now over. They boarded a train and headed to Genoa and had a night in a hotel before boarding their cruise ship the MSC Armonia for a Mediterranean cruise.

They would visit Marseilles, Mahon, Sardinia, Malta, Sicily and Naples with the opportunity for another walk. This time it was Mt Vesuvius. Both Sharyn and Peter loved the climb on the mountain and the wonderful views below.

Finally they cruised back to Genoa for disembarkation taking a train to Milan.

After a night in Milan they flew to Hong Kong for three days of R&R before flying home.

Sharyn and Peter just loved the whole experience. There was so much to see and do. They met some wonderful people and the Hidden Italy self-guided walk was incredible, though you needed to be reasonably fit climbing all those stairs.

But if you are looking for a holiday experience with a difference Cinque Terre could be the place for you.

IT HAS been interesting to see where country football has gone over the past thirty odd years since the MCG had the lights on for the first game for VFL premiership points in 1985.

Many clubs across Victoria now have lights and play a few Saturday night games in the hope to get a few extra supporters to come through the gates. Every club brags about their lights being better than the next clubs but let’s be honest, no ground comes close to having the 844 lamps that the MCG has.

A couple of clubs in other areas have come up with quite a unique way to promote their thirds while not affecting the senior and reserve competitions using their lights, when no senior game has been fixed in the 7pm time slot.

Rather than the traditional 10am start for the thirds, a twilight start of 5pm after the senior game is a great way to promote the thirds boys and utilise a club’s lights. It would certainly be a bit of a thrill for the young men trying to impress also as the senior boys have a few ‘frothies’ while they run an eye over the clubs future stars.

On top of the playing side of things I’m positive that night events would make it easier on all club volunteers and the parents that drive their young aspiring players to the footy due to work commitments and the like on Saturdays. It’s a different world we live in now and turning the lights on wherever possible could not only promote the game further but also make the day at the footy even better.

Honourable match a first for regional Victoria

By David Lee IT WAS a special day filled with pride for the Rushworth Football Club on the weekend, with the club being the only regional club to be given the chance to play an ANZAC themed game.

The club received approval from RSL Australia to use the ANZAC name and identities, with Hotondo Homes Shepparton coming on board as a sponsor for the match, where Rushworth was unfortunately taken down by Undera, 38 to 164.

Rushworth Football Netball Club vice president, Regan Hanson said, “The local RSL got behind us with support, lowering the flag and playing the last post. There was also a pre-match and post-match speech and we had one minute of silence, which was something really special as a player and committee member to be part of.

“It was a really good day and well-supported by the

community. This was something that was such a big thing for the club and the Rushworth community.

“The match was very close early on and the spirit was alive early in the first quarter for both teams. Undera kicked away on the second quarter, but Rushworth kicked back the third and last. It was a tough fought game, and the scores don’t really reflect that, but it was an honour to have our club play in such a match.

“We’d like to thank Hotondo Homes, RSL Victoria and RSL Rushworth, the Undera Football Netball Club and the Rushworth and general community whose support was just amazing.”

Sporting clubs share in over $105,000 in grants CENTRAL Park/St Brendan’s Cricket Club is the big winner of round two of the Our Sporting Future funding program, being awarded $29,129.70 out of the $105,341.42 of total grants awarded.

As part of the minor category, Tallygaroopna Recreation Reserve Committee of Management will receive $11,129.22 for airconditioning and ventilation works, Tatura Lawn Tennis Club will receive $9,130 for a facilities upgrade, Murchison-Toolamba Football Netball Club will receive $12,650 toward a netball family friendly focus program, Northern Victoria Show Jumping Club will receive $3,300 toward future proofing its World Cup Quality Arena, Katandra Bowling Club will receive $6,306.85 to go towards an Eagles Storage Shed and Tallygaroopna Bowling Club will receive

$13,457.12 toward club improvements.

As part of the sports aid category, Shepparton Soccer Club will receive $5,500 towards a MiniRoos Kick Off for Girls and Regional Girls Development Program, Shepparton Junior Soccer Association will receive $2,176.15 for a First Kinderoos Program, Tallygaroopna Football Netball Club will receive $1,769.33 toward a Tallygaroopna Junior Girls project, Shepparton Athletics Club will receive $4,055 for a Walk Up and Run Athletics project and Shepparton Swans Football Netball Club will receive $2,967.80 to go toward the development of a Strategic, Operational and Participation Growth Plan.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said she was pleased Council can continue to support local sporting clubs and

organisations.

“We hope this financial support will allow sporting clubs and organisations in Greater Shepparton to prosper and continue to grow,” she said.

“Our support in round two reaches right across Greater Shepparton from Tatura to Murchison and Katandra to Tallygaroopna.

“Thank you to all clubs and organisations who submitted an application and congratulations to those who were successful.”

Applications for funding are assessed in two rounds annually, with the first round closing at the end of July each year and the second round closing in February each year.

Trackside at the Circuit of the Americas an experience like no other

By David Lee LOCAL resident, John Painter has come back from working trackside at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) with a smile on his face, after taking in an experience like no other.

All in the week he was in America, John took in the sights at Texas before taking his position at turn 16 as a track marshal, right below the COTA observation tower.

John said, “What an amazing experience!

My first view of COTA was when I drove into the car park on the Thursday afternoon and saw the large marshal’s tent.

I introduced myself to the officials and was made very welcome.

“I also met a fellow Aussie from South Australia, Graeme Eberhard. We were taken for a trip around the place in a golf buggy by their flags chief, checking out the track and the pits. I arrived the next morning and we were loaded onto school buses and transported to our points. We were briefed before we started work, repeating this ritual on each of the three days.

“As the temperature rose, I was able to discard warmer clothing, revealing the larrikin in me as my wife had sewn small Aussie flags onto the sleeves of my shirt.

and they all wanted to hear me say ‘G’day mate.’ It certainly got some great comments.

“I also had many questions regarding Phillip Island and as a result there are quite a few American marshals that want to experience the island.

“It was an experience I will not forget for a long time.”
