By Sarah Knight ENHANCING the connectivity between the city centre and the Shepparton Railway Station has been highlighted as the key objective of the Shepparton Railway Precinct Master Plan (2017), with a view to maximise accessibility and functionality to and from the city.

The railway connection project has attracted much discussion in recent times, since the announcement of the expected cost of the development of an overpass, which was anticipated to exceed $18 million dollars.

Superhero help for colleague A collection of superheroes were greeting clients at GV Vets last Friday, in a show of support for staff member, Katherine Byrne who lost her son, Elijah, to heart failure last year.

Elijah Byrne was airlifted to Royal C h i ld ren’s Hospit a l w it h bre at h i ng difficulties at just four days old and he spent the first five weeks of his life in intensive care. He had several open-heart surgeries within that time and sadly, passed away at just five months old.

New hatchery to boost local economy

By Sarah Knight ACCORDING to state government figures, more than 830,000 Victorians enjoy fishing and the industry is reportedly responsible for employing more than 16,000 Victorians. Those numbers are set to rise under a new government investment plan, which aims to grow the number of active anglers in Victoria to one million by 2020.

Considered an important component of the Greater Shepparton tourism and recreation economy, the industry is about to receive a significant local boost; as the recently released state budget, prepared by the Andrews Government has demonstrated.

The government’s financial backing and commitment to providing $7 million will assist in the establishment of a new fish hatchery in the Greater Shepparton region.

The fully funded establishment of the hatchery has officially been approved in this year’s state budget; a decision that Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed says she is very pleased about.

After reviewing the draft Freshwater Fisheries Management Plan, Ms Sheed wrote to then Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford in June last year, calling for this important project to be established.

Ms Sheed explained that she could foresee the development of such a facility in the Shepparton area being an important employment resource, especially for the region’s large indigenous population, which in itself addressed a range of government priorities.

“Projects such as this one will help to further diversify Greater Shepparton’s economy, creating new opportunities and insulating our economy from shocks to any one industry,” Ms Sheed said.

Ensuring the new hatchery delivers benefits beyond just improving the region’s fish stocks is also important to Ms Sheed.

“I have been pushing for every new project in my region to have a value-add component. A new fishery will not only improve native fish stocks and subsequent tourism levels, but the hatchery itself can also provide tourism and education opportunities,” she said.

hatchery facility, Ms Sheed said, “I will also be asking the Andrews Government to build in a tourism and education component into this project. Providing another tourist attraction and a site of learning for our region’s students is a potential added benefit for the hatchery.”

A further $28 million of state government funding has been committed to assist with the phase two growth plan to reach a state’s total of one million anglers by 2020.

Funding to grow Shepparton’s business diversity THE vibrant business scene in Shepparton is set to become more diverse with $32,000 in funding from the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Small Business, Adem Somyurek, announced the funding while visiting Shepparton, which will support the City of Greater Shepparton’s initiatives to increase diversity and capability among local businesses.

Somyurek said, “Small businesses have a crucial role to play in ensuring we have a fair and inclusive economy that benefits all Victorians.”

The City of Greater Shepparton has a clear vision for its future. This funding will help create the sustainable economy that its 2030 strategy aspires to.”

A catch-and-release program is underway for Murray Cod and other high-value native fish caught up in the East Goulburn Murray Main Irrigation Channel.

Taking advantage of the end of the gravity irrigation season, Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is allowing the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) and a contracted electro-fishing boat to enter the irrigation channel to catch the trapped fish for release.

In news that will please local anglers, the partnership plans to relocate hundreds of valuable native fish – mostly decent-size Murray Cod – back into family friendly fishing spots like Lake Benalla, Broken Creek at Nathalia, the Goulburn River and Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton.

Murray Cod and other native fish like Golden Perch and Blackfish have shown

they can adapt to life in the Eastern G oulbu rn M ain I rrigation Chan nel, however, the fish are at risk when GMW conducts regular lowering of channels for de-silting and weed spray programs.

The fish likely original came from Nagambie Lakes and unwittingly found their way into the irrigation network via the Goulburn Weir.

GMW managing director, Charmaine Quick welcomed the joint effort with the VFA, describing it as a “win-win” for local communities, anglers and the environment – not to mention the wayward fish.

Intersection upgrade awarded to local contractor GREATER Shepparton City Council has recently accepted a tender submitted by Jarvis Delahey Contractors for the road and drainage works of the BalaclavaVerney intersection upgrade.

The upgrade of the intersection at Balaclava Road, Verney Road, New Dookie Road and Hawdon Street (Balaclava-Verney intersection) will see the current roundabout replaced by a signalised intersection.

Helping hand for kids of the community LOCALS are being encouraged to dig deep into their pockets this month and give to a great cause, with the annual Give Me Five For Kids (GM5FK) fundraiser launching this week on Monday, June 3.

Now in its 25th year, Southern Cross Austereo’s national fundraiser has raised over $2.5 million for paediatric wards of local hospitals and children’s health-related charities, benefitting over 40 children’s hospital wards.

The new equipment for the hospital also means better services and as a result, more frequent visits from Melbournebased specialist surgeons.

The 2019 GM5FK fundraiser launched with 95.3 Triple M broadcasting live at Goulburn Valley Health’s Children Ward and interviewing many of those involved.

GV Health has benefitted greatly from local contributions from GM5FK over the years and this year, the money raised will go toward purchase of two new Infant Isolette Cots for the special care nursery.

New foundation attracts ongoing investment

By Sarah Knight THE evening of Thursday, May 23 saw a crowd of more than 70 turn out to celebrate the official launch of the region’s newest philanthropic organisation, the Greater Shepparton Foundation (GSF) at Billabong Garden Complex’s Garden Kitchen Café.

The new foundation is effectively an evolution of The Community Fund Goulburn Valley and aims to capitalise on the success and community-driven work and programs The Community Fund has developed over the past 18 years.

Since inception, the GSF has seen strong support from both the local community and beyond and the launch evening saw more of the same, with pledges of more than $500,000 in donations a highlight of the event.

This particular generous pledge came from the Fairley Foundation, who for more than 50 years, have been supporting local community projects with philanthropic funding.

“We are looking forward to fulfilling our vision of, ‘No-one living with disadvantage in Greater Shepparton’,”

Their contribution will be dispersed over a five-year period in support of the ongoing aspirations of the GSF. Other generous donations of $10,000 were also made from Leon Carp and family and Radek Sali and his business, Light Warrior. The Carp family came to settle in Shepparton from Europe more than 70 years ago and say this donation is to acknowledge the importance of Shepparton in accepting and settling immigrants over generations.

Murray crayfish on the menu

By Sarah Knight WITH winter well and truly here, it’s an exciting time for anglers in northern Victoria and southern New South Wales who are brave enough to face the cold weather in order to pursue their favourite crustacean…Yes, it’s here, Saturday, June 1 marked the official opening of the 2019 Murray Crayfish season.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Senior Fisheries Manager Cameron Westaway invited fishers to enjoy the limited season, but cautioned that rules and regulations would be actively enforced.

“The opening of the Murray Crayfish season is an exciting time for freshwater fishers, with crays only permitted to be taken for a limited time, during the months of June, July and August.

“Though environmental factors such as habitat degradation and modification have led to widespread declines in populations of the Murray crayfish, a number of rules are in place to protect the species and assist with its recovery,” he said.

“In the Murray River, fishing is permitted between the Hume Weir and the Tocumwal Road Bridge, including Lake Mulwala, and in the Murrumbidgee River between the Gundagai Road Bridge and Berembed Weir, excluding Old Man Creek.”

In Victoria up to five labelled hoop nets can be used throughout the Goulburn river system with the exclusion of the Lake Eildon area.

During the season, the minimum size limit for the species is 10cm – measured from the rear of the eye socket to the centre rear of the carapace – and the maximum size limit is 12cm. There is also a daily bag limit of two crayfish and a possession limit of four in total.

The opening of crayfish season is highly anticipated by the local community, however the DPI encourages fishers to abide by the rules to ensure the species is sustained for future generations.

“We’d like fishers to enjoy the season, but remind them to be respectful of the rules. Fisheries officers will be patrolling the

Quality independent butchery re-opens in Rushworth THE Rushworth community were extremely excited about the re-opening of townfavourite Perry’s Butchery back in December.

A national contingent has converged on Shepparton for the Australian Biology of Tephritid Fruit Flies Conference, bringing together researchers, scholars and industry leads.

The Goulburn Murray Valley Fruit Fly Project hosted the national conference, which ran Tuesday and Wednesday last week, at Riverlinks Eastbank Shepparton and attracted approximately 150 delegates from across Australia.

The conference theme of ‘Blue Sky Applied’ highlighted blue sky research that can be ‘applied’ to provide practical solutions for Australian horticulture.

Aptly held in Shepparton, the pome fruit capital of Australia, the event brought together key research, findings and emerging opportunities in the management and control of pests.

Key sessions and talking points over the two days included biosecurity and market access, fruit fly ecology and microbial interactions, molecular biology and genetics along with chemical ecology.

Goulburn Murray Valley Fruit Fly project coordinator, Ross Abberfield described the conference as an invaluable opportunity to bring the sharpest minds in the field together.

“This is a national event and brings together researchers from each end of the professional spectrum. It enables them to look, listen, learn and connect with their peers and recognise fruit fly research scholars,” Ross said.

The Goulburn Murray Valley Fruit Fly Project is funded by the Victorian Government’s Managing Fruit Fly Regional Grants Program and brings together grower groups, industry, the community and government to strengthen fruit fly management.

Alternate overpass plan continued from front page THE overpass concept and shared linkages plans were released for public consultation and opinion for a period of six weeks from January 7, 2019 to February 18, 2019.

After considering the concerns regarding the project’s expense were expressed by those that submitted responses, council officers engaged Arcadis Pty Ltd to prepare an alternative concept plan for the overpass to take into consideration. The alternative plan reduced the estimated cost to $17.3 million.

On Tuesday, May 22 an ordinary council meeting was held and all submissions of feedback received were considered by council

officers and included in a conversation report, which was received and noted at the meeting. This report is available to the public and can now be downloaded from council’s website.

Since this meeting, council have announced that they will use the alternative plan in any further discussions with rail authorities, while continuing to work collaboratively with the state government to improve access and connectivity between the railway station and other parts of the city.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said “Council’s aim is to see the construction of a new railway station in preparation for the nine Velocity trains

that will service Shepparton. These linkages are an important step in the process.”

Cr O’Keeffe said council were keen to promote additional access from the eastern residential areas, to Shepparton’s retail, health and education facilities.

“Council also want to support the redevelopment of land adjoining the railway line, to help transform the neglected area into a more enticing entrance to Shepparton.”

“We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the state government to achieve an attractive, safe and sustainable outcome for our community,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

Local creativity on display THE community has given great feedback: qualit y ar t, classy show, welcoming atmosphere and a wonderful café. Following on from the success of their largest ever show in 2018, the award-winning Tatura Rotary and Community Art Show is set to delight art-lovers again this year over the June long weekend Taking place from June 7 until June 10 at Victory Hall, Hogan Street, Tatura, the town will come alive with an appreciation for art, creativity and a joyous sense of community.

The huge weekend will commence on Friday, June 7, with doors open at 7pm for an opening night gala featuring Australian Opera singer, Michael Lapina performing popular songs from recent operas and musicals.

From Saturday until Monday, guests will have the chance to view and purchase some quality art. The show features a great variety of art available for purchase from both emerging and established artists.

The 2019 feature artist for the exhibition will be Rhonda Willoughby. Drawing on the environment that was her home for so many years, Rhonda’s art captures and reflects the diverse images of Australia, including

realistic perspectives of cityscapes, the outback, seaside, and the Blue Mountains.

Having lived on the banks of the Murray for nearly forty years, Rhonda has enjoyed depicting the light and mood of the river at different times of the day. This approach is perfectly reflected in her painting ‘Peace and Tranquillity’, which Rhonda has kindly donated to the Rotary Art Show for the raffle prize.

The art exhibition in Victory Hall will be open from 10am until 5pm, Saturday and Sunday, and from 10am until 4pm on

Monday. Exhibition entry is $5, with no charge for children under 16 years. The Tatura Uniting Church Tongan choir will be performing throughout the weekend and a tasty, light lunch will be available from Saturday through to Monday.

The voluntary effort by Rotary members, family and friends, is what creates this unique event. With their ongoing support of the arts in the region, proceeds from this show are then channelled back into the local community.

THE newly developed building, to be known as Mooroopna Place, will be ran

by Shepparton Villages and will include an additional 10 residential care beds, bringing the total to 100. Mooroopna Place is part of a 9.5ha site located along Knight Street, Mooroopna, and was the previous site for Waratah Lodge, Grevillea Lodge and Boronia House. Residents from those facilities were relocated to Hakea Lodge and Maculata Place at Tarcoola late last year.

AW Nicholson Construction is set to begin redevelopment of the site in June, committing to provide employment for more than 150 people throughout the course of the build, expected to be finished in September 2020.

Hot water will be supplemented to the new Aged Care Facility via the use of rooftop solar panels, with provisions being made for an 80kW solar photovoltaic array of almost 278 panels that will generate around a third of the facility’s daytime

power needs and reduce the carbon footprint by many tonnes yearly.

Shepparton Villages CEO, Kerri Rivett said, “The sod turning is symbolic of the redevelopment works that we will be undertaking here in Mooroopna. The build will involve the demolition and rebuild of the oldest part of the building, formerly Waratah Lodge, and the total gutting and redevelopment of Boronia House and Grevillea Lodge.

“The end result will be a modernised home that caters to the changing needs of those coming in to care and respects the model of care we run at Shepparton Villages, which centres around consumer choice, respect and dignity.”

Writing award now open THE 2019 Dungala-Kaiela Writing Awards are open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with a connection to our region. Inaugurated in 2012 to provide an opportunity for writing and self-expression in the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the 2019 Dungala-Kaiela Writing Awards are now open and written entries are invited.

There are three categories in the awards, the Story/ Yarn /Article/ Play category has four sections, the Junior section (Prep to Grade 6), Youth section (13 years to 18 years), Open section (19 years and over) and the Elders section (65 years and over).

Adviser Personal bests achieved on tough terrain

Local legend plays 300th game

By Sarah Knight LAST Saturday June 1, saw local legend, Nicole (Nicci) Karl play her 300th game for the Tallygaroopna Football Netball Club.

Nicole started with the club back in 1995 as a spritely 20 year old. At the time, she was dating her now-husband Brent; a keen footy player at the club, and says she’d happily drive from Wangaratta on the weekends to play for the club.

After the pair married in 1996, Nicole relocated to Tallygaroopna and continued to play for the club only ever taking short breaks when she ‘had the kids’.

When asked what it was that has kept her actively involved with the club for so long, Nicole said, “It’s the family atmosphere. It’s a real family orientated club. Once you join you don’t want to leave – it’s just that kind of club.”

Over the years Nicci and her family have been a part of both the on and off field success of the club, with her three children playing in both the football and netball ranks, as well as her and husband Brent both having been on the club’s committee and Brent also offering his support as a trainer.

Nicole says there have been many highlights over the years, however her standout would have to be when the club won back-to-back grand finals in 2016 and 2017.

“Having to wait 21 years to win another grand final and then winning back to back grannies was a big achievement,” she said.

Nicole attributes the wins to the team’s dynamics and the strength and unity that being friends both on and off the courts brings.

The Tallygaroopna Football Netball Club said they would like to thank Nicci for her service to the club, not only on the court but off the court as well.

A CRISP winter morning couldn’t stop 38 runners from the Shepparton Runners Club (SRC) taking part in the 4.9km Cross Country Handicap Race on Sunday.

The course, which is a mixture of grass and gravel, saw many runners reaching a new personal best.

Justine Ryan was first to cross the finish at 34:21.

Sisters, Isla and Erica Shaw battled for second, with Isla finishing just two seconds in front.

Chris Banning was the first male to finish in a time of 35:20 with Sam Daniel following closely at four seconds behind him.

SRC coach, Chris Armstrong said “It was a great day to see so many runners, there was a good range of levels; it was hard to handicap.”

“It was also great to see so many volunteers help out, which allowed everyone to run and enjoy a barbecue at the end of the event. It was great to see many people supporting their mates, which is one of the reasons the SRC is a great place to be.”

“A special thank you to Gary ‘Nipper’ Harvey for coming down to present the $30 vouchers from our fantastic sponsors at Intersport Shepparton to our winners.”

The next SRC handicap will be 10km in July in the lead up to the Shepparton Running Festival in August.

Partnering up to grow festival

By Sarah Knight THE Shepparton Runners Club and annual Shepparton Running Festival are set to benefit from a newly formed partnership that combines the talents of two highly skilled and passionate industry professionals.

The combination of event management skills that Liz Connick brings to the table, coupled with Sean Greenhill’s extensive experience in creating sports events and their personal passion for running, is destined to attract new enthusiasm and exposure for event.

With a significant amount of work having been done already to position the festival for a strong future, the new partnership looks set to offer the support required to roll out the next three annual events; beginning with this year’s event on Sunday, August 25 and continuing through until 2021.

Shepparton Runners Club president, Steve Ayton said, “We anticipate the event will continue to see good growth on the back of the success of last year’s event and, with Liz and Sean’s guidance and experience, we’re certain athletes can expect a superior experience during their time in Shepparton.”

Both Liz and Sean are passionate about running and the benefits of the sport, but say that just as important to them, is how the event showcases Shepparton, attracts visitation and boosts its economy.

The festival’s unique course not only highlights some of our region’s key attributes, like the stunning Victoria Park Lake precinct, the beauty of the Goulburn River, its extensive walking tracks and riverbanks; it is also ideal for all ages and all-abilities. Athletes enjoy the appeal of a flat, fast course that is suitable for both beginners and those chasing personal bests or qualification for other upcoming events.

Distances for this year’s event include the challenging 42.2km Marathon, Team Marathon and Half-Marathon 21.1km a10km, 5km and the 2km kids dash.

The Shepparton Running Festival is held annually on the fourth Sunday in August, listed on Victoria’s Regional Running calendar and widely attended by entrants in training during the lead up to the Melbourne Marathon.
