A European flavour comes to Shepparton. Winter is the season for snow and ice skating and Shepparton is no different. Winter Fun comes to the Maude Street mall over the school holidays with an ice skating rink now in place and running through until the 14th July.

Sessions will be taking place every day and tickets are available online with links to the ticket office through the operator, Southern Magic Ice Skating’s Facebook page or through the Greater Shepparton Council events page.

A healthy dose of joy SMILES and laughter echoed throughout the halls of the GV Health ward last Wednesday, with a surprise visit from the touring Clown Doctors.

Dr Okey Dokey and Dr Popoff bounced into the children’s ward gleefully, prepared with a trolley of tricks and magic to make the little ones giggle.

The Clown Doctor program is provided

by The Humour Foundation, an Australian charity dedicated to bringing the health benefits of humour to the community. Using joy and laughter, the program endeavours to help children and families through scary and tough circumstances, distracting them from the daunting hospital setting.

Clown Doctors work in partnership with medical professionals to divert children during painful procedures, to calm and divert in an emergency, and to provide a sense of wellbeing to sick and injured kids.

Sporting her bright red nose, Shontoya smiled and said, “It’s very fun. They’re funny and really silly.”

Relief as road works complete TRADERS in Fryers Street are relieved with the recent completion of road work, which had caused significant delays and slowed down some business in the area.

The pedestrian safety works, which began toward the end of May, saw the installation of bump strips and raised crossings at the corner of Fryers Street and Maude Street and Fryers Street and Corio Street. This will slow traffic on the street, which has seen a recent rise in foot traffic, especially in the evenings.

Greater Sheppa r ton Cit y C ou ncil director infrastructure Phil Hoare said he appreciated the cooperation and patience of businesses, shoppers and road users during the works.

“Council understands road works in the CBD create disruption to traffic, businesses and parking and it was pleasing to have the

works completed and the road back open ahead of time,” Mr Hoare said.

“The pedestrian crossing improvements assist in slowing vehicles and improve visibility of pedestrians, making our CBD safer for pedestrians. In particular, the realignment of the crossing at the Fryers and Corio Street interestion has addressed a safety issue that has been raised by many residents.”

Similar improvements to pedestrian crossings were also completed in other areas such as Corio Street and North Street.

An innovative approach to slowing traffic at crossings now being tried in Queensland has been to create threedimensional images that create the illusion that the zebra lines are rising out of the road and cause drivers to approach with more caution.

WHEN Wunghnu resident Judy Arnold was diagnosed with breast cancer in March this year, she was shocked to learn that she would need to travel to Melbourne to receive the radiotherapy required to keep her alive.

With no radiotherapy services currently available in the region, Mrs Arnold’s daughter Emma and her friend Trish Milne decided to do everything they can to start raising the funds required for a radiotherapy centre here in Shepparton.

In less than two weeks, the small town of Wunghnu rallied together to raise a whopping $7000 by hosting a music extravaganza and a head shave night in town. What started off as something small has exploded into a huge event, which far exceeded everybody’s expectations.

The money raised will be put into a GV Health trust fund to ensure that radiotherapy treatment will be available in the future.

Community shows their support

By Sarah Knight ORIGINALLY from Europe, Minako is a local woman, who regularly visits the car park coffee station at the back of Lutfiyes Shish Kebab to collect things like clothing and footwear from the pile of readily available community donations. They’re the type of items that get damp and wet on the cold nights typical of this time of year, she tells me and are often simply easier to replace than launder.

“A load of washing costs me around $4 a load at the laundry mat, if I have to choose between that and a meal; well you know what I’d choose,” she said without question, squarely looking me in the eyes – I did.

No stranger to doing it tough, Minako spoke candidly of her experiences, “I live on about $260 a fortnight after the bills are paid.” She added context by explaining that she often doesn’t feel safe where she resides, but the alternative, no roof at all… “It’s like a nightmare. You really have no idea, you have to live it to know.”

Late in May, The Adviser ran a story on the homelessness crisis in the region and the increasing volume of people accessing local support services. Many community members responded, delivering donations of clothing, blankets and footwear to the dedicated space at the back of Lutfiyes.

everyone, God bless you, that’s why we keep doing what we do.”

At the core of the story, the moral issue has very obviously been felt within the community, with actions driven by compassion and empathy providing a ripple effect.

One such example is a forthcoming community luncheon event organised by City of Greater Shepparton Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe in conjunction with The Adviser, Shepparton Foodshare, the Salvation Army and Lutfiyes.

The community luncheon will take place at the Sherbourne Terrace and is designed to raise awareness around the high numbers of homelessness in the region.

Cr O’Keeffe said that she saw a lot of people already doing incredible things to fight homelessness locally and

that the luncheon hopes to bring everyone in the community together for a positive outcome.

“The fundraiser is an event to recognise homelessness and come together as a community to get more involved, because when we come together collaboratively, our voices get louder” she said.

“I get a lot of people in the community asking about how they can help, which is great! I hope the event will inform the region of what’s currently happening, what’s ahead, and what still needs to happen.”

The fundraiser for the homeless and vulnerable will be held on Sunday, July 28 at the Sherbourne Terrace, 12pm 3:30pm. Tickets are $50 and includes light lunch, drink on arrival, lucky door prizes and activities.

NEWS The rural town of Tatura was first settled back in the 1930s but it wasn’t officially proclaimed until 1873. By 1890, the small town included six hotels, a library, a Catholic and Presbyterian Church, a soft drink factory had opened and Dhurringile Mansion had been built.

New kitchen for Tatura Men’s Shed

By Katelyn Morse T H E Tat u r a M e n’s S h e d r e c e nt ly upgraded their kitchen thanks to federal funding received through the Stronger Communities Programme.

With 55 members and over 30 of those regularly turning up every Tuesday for lunch, the new kitchen equipment is already making a huge difference.

After receiving the grant, the Tatura Men’s Shed were able to get a new fridge and freezer, oven and stovetop, stainless steel drawers and benchtops.

These replaced the donated, second-hand equipment they previously had.

“The new kitchen facilities are really convenient for our members to show off their skills. It makes cooking a lot more efficient and is easier to keep clean” said

Tatura Men’s Shed vice president, Tom Perry.

In addition to cooking the meals, the Tatura Men’s Shed also grow a lot of their own ingredients such as potatoes, pumpkin, rhubarb, spices and more.

The members get together twice a week and do things such as welding, engineering, restoration of vehicles, screen printing on shirts, make Christmas decorations for the town, bird traps, their own beer and wine and more.

The Tatura Men’s Shed are encouraging locals to become members which costs just $40 per year. Anyone wanting to become a member can contact Tom Perry on 0408 052 429 or come down to the shed between 10am-3pm on a Tuesday or Thursday.

THIS weekend has seen massive destruction particularly through the centre of Tatura due to the stormy weather which has placed great strain on the important work undertaken by the Tatura SES. They need volunteers.

Speaking with Bec Gould, the deputy controller, in between call outs, she said, “We need to double the number of members as soon as we can.”

Community groups are always looking for new members and it is during times like this last weekend when being part of the emergency services is so important.

“Not all volunteers are required to do call outs. We need people doing our administration and manning of the radio, especially at times like this.”

The SES is on hand to assist in all sorts

of emergency work, from dealing with car accidents, floods, rescue work and a range of other situations when people get into difficulties.

Becoming a member opens people up to getting certified with national qualifications in dozens of areas while at the same time provides a comprehensive support structure at no cost to the members.

While some areas do require physical capability, there are a lot of jobs where that is not required. Training normally happens outside business hours with some happening on weekends.

Training with the SES happens every Monday night and everyone is welcomed to go along and have a look at what they do. The Tatura unit is located at 52 Martin Street, Tatura.

A day for Indigenous children’s health

A FOCUS on health and community saw a huge turnout at Lulla’s Children and Family Centre last Friday for their 10th Annual Health Day. Lulla’s Annual Health Day is a day for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to come and have their key health checks and immunisations in a culturally safe environment. This ensures that all Indigenous children have an annual health check, and Lulla’s also help to guide and support families in the right direction, according to their child’s needs.

With workshops, music and traditional dancing, Into the Wild with live animals and lunch provided, Lulla’s Annual Health Day was a great day for kids and parents to

have some fun as well as learn about their health.

Lulla’s Director, Miranda Edwards, said, “Last year we completed 94 health checks for the kids, compared to our first year where we only had 10 kids. It’s great to see this day grow into such a big and successful event.”

Lulla’s is dedicated to giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children access to high-quality education and care, with the aim to reinforce cultural identity while building confidence and self-esteem.

Mobile phone ban to hit schools

A BAN on mobile phones is set to be introduced in all Victorian state primary and secondary schools in Term 1, 2020.

Minister for Education James Merlino announced the reform at McKinnon Secondary College, which has seen the benefits of its mobile phone ban on student learning and social behaviour.

According to the latest research from Headspace, around 53 percent of young Australians have experienced cyberbullying.

Considering Dookie is a region known for its shiraz, the Dookie Wine Show is expected to see 30 to 35 entries just in that

class, with the rest of the entries split fairly equally between red and white wines.

A week of Indigenous celebrations NAIDOC Week celebrations will be held across Australia next week to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Hundreds march in protest of ‘Super School’

continued from front page THE protest started at the Department of Education and Training building near the corner of High Street and Corio Street and continued around the road on to Wyndham Street and interrupting traffic, before finishing up in front of Suzanna Sheed’s office.

The protest was led by Robin Boschetti, founder of the ‘Stop Shepparton’s New Super School!’ Facebook group. Amassing over 2000 members in less than a month, the group is filled with local parents and teachers who are concerned about the future of local children.

During the march, we spoke to passionate local mother, Linda, who has a Year 7 student at Wanganui.

“We spent years trying to find the right secondary school for both of our children to attend,” Linda said.

“The choice of principal and the on-flow of each school’s philosophies was a big factor in

deciding what school we wanted our kids to attend and now we have no say in that, it feels like a dictatorship,” Linda said.

“We’re also very worried about bullying.

We know people who moved houses to be zoned in the right area for their school of choice and now they have been stripped of that choice and will be lumped back in with the same group of bullies. These kids are going to be basically jailed with their offender.”

Many of those present for the protest believe that there has not been enough consultation with parents throughout the process, many left with their concerns and questions unanswered.

With the rain not slowing down the crowd at all, the protest approached Ms Sheed’s office. Word was beginning to spread that she was on holiday due to parliamentary winter recess.

Several letters were left with her office as the organisers continued collecting signatures for a petition with numbers now in the thousands.

Shepparton’s education has played an important role for Ms Sheed throughout her time in office. In April last year, Ms Sheed welcomed Victoria Government’s announcement of $20.5 million towards the Shepparton Education Plan, which is to help fund the first stage of the new super school.

“Members of this community have been fighting for investment in our secondary schools for nearly thirty years and now we have finally been able to achieve an outcome that will provide so many opportunities for our kids,” Ms Sheed said.

“The Shepparton Education Plan was designed to support children from birth through to 18 years, and there will be more work in the early years and primary school sectors as we move forward.”

Progress takes time. In the fifty years since Honda Australia has been around, much has happened in the world and even more has happened with Honda vehicles.

Shepparton Honda took time out last Thursday to celebrate not just fifty years of Honda Australia but their 25th anniversary that they have been cementing their place in Shepparton. To mark the celebrations, they paraded two of their prestige vehicles, the latest Honda Civic-R and the Honda NSX in gold at their dealership.

The people at Shepparton Honda report that the Honda Civic-R is the fastest front wheel drive production car in the world, a tempting challenge to stay within national

speed limits. The Civic is now in its eighth generation since it first arrived in Australia in 1972 as a two door subcompact followed by a three door hatchback in an era dominated by small European vehicles, it has continually improved its position with the Civic-R having a good reputation for its sportiness.

The Honda NSX is a hybrid supercar and boasts instant acceleration. Powered by a twin turbo 3.5l V6 and three electric motors.

The first production NSX from the second series sold in the U.S. for $1.2 million dollars in 2016. Definitely a golden moment.

Congratulations go out to Honda Australia and Shepparton Honda for reaching these two significant milestones.

New restorative care service helps

maintain independence A NEW service coming to Shepparton Retirement Villages will assist those wishing to maintain physical and mental health and wellbeing within their own homes.

One of only two ser vices available across the Hume Region, the Short Term Restorative Care (STRC) program is a new specialised service that will be offered by Shepparton Villages to the wider community from July 1.

Delivered to clients from within their home, the service is designed to reverse or slow functional decline that some older people may experience.

Using a goal-or ientated process, Shepparton Villages’ newly appointed Community Service Program Manager, Emma Williamson will work exclusively with clients from within their home to create a goal-orientated process.

“There will be access to a suite of services over an eight-week period that will get you back to being able to live independently in your own home,” Emma said.

“The service is for people who are at risk of needing to go into care or need a bigger range of services. We work with a multi-disciplinary team including the client’s general practitioner to try and get them back on their feet.”

RESIDENTS at Harmony Village Shepparton have been thoroughly enjoying the upgraded features in their exciting new wing.

REPORTING ON THE SUPER SCHOOL Dear Editor, As one of the many who took to the streets on Friday afternoon to protest the amalgamation of four Shepparton colleges, I would like to say how disgusted I am with the tactics of the News and Susanna Sheed’s office to attempt to denigrate a peaceful, honest protest march with suggestions of violence. For leaders of the proposed amalgamation to state that 2000 plus people do not understand the proposals or are simply afraid of change is insulting.

The police stated that the incident at the offices was not associated with the march, no one was aware of the rock throwing and for the News to intimate that these things can happen when people’s emotions are high and they should listen to the proposals, shows how biased they are in their opinion. Objectors have made the effort and are not uninformed, except for the finer details as to how academic results will be improved by this plan, something we would all like to happen.

Our local paper needs to correctly reflect the opinions of the people it represents.

This government plans to ignore the voice of 2000 plus parents who are not convinced that nine unwanted 3-storey buildings on a site previously holding 566 students, now to house 2-3000, on a site with no further chance of expansion catering for 2500 with associated travel and parking problems, cultivating a private school image and a new school running system, with funding limited to one year, will guarantee a higher degree of academic output in relation to the state average.

This system is not working in the state schools that have submitted, as witnessed by parents’ comments that have already been forced to comply, with threats of no funding to those schools who refuse.

Forced amalgamation has been happening stealthily across this state since 2015.

There will be a 200% chance increase of possible bullying and disruptive behaviour crowded into one site and probability of losing current subject electives, with no choice of alternate school. 397 VCE students does not guarantee more subject choices and most feel it could be achieved with less disruption than transitioning all students for three to four years, incurring travel distances of 23.4 km twice daily as parents ferry children between 3 locations, losing sibling support, or forced to use costly buses in expensive new, unsuitable, formal uniforms. Especially difficult for the many low socio-economic households, despite allowances they will struggle with increased bus, fuel and uniform expenses.

At best a social experiment from which they expected little opposition, at worst it is the most ill-conceived plan, without

substance or proof, I have ever seen with regard to education in this state.

AN IDEA TO COMBAT OUR WATER WOES Dear Editor, I noted with interest the recent publicity given to scientists who are exploring taking crops out of the field and growing them in warehouses – they call them ‘plant factories’ - so humankind is capable of feeding 10 billion people by 2050.

Food security and our ability to feed the growing population is no doubt going to be a significant challenge in coming decades.

I have an idea, which may help make a valuable contribution and allow regions in southern NSW and northern Victoria to play a prominent role. At the same time it has the potential to bring significant economic prosperity not only to these regions, but the entire nation of Australia.

Here’s how it works: First, I suggest we build some dams in the upper reaches of the Murray system to store our water. I have even come up with some names – let’s call them Hume and Dartmouth.

We could also build storage systems in the Snowy Mountains, which would not only provide a valuable means of droughtproofing large parts of our region, but perhaps also help in supplying electricity through a hydro scheme.

I understand that a vast network of canals would be needed to channel this water to farming properties so they could grow our grain and stock, but surely this is not insurmountable. And when it is done we may have the best gravity feed system in the world. Imagine that!

At the same time the water could provide environmental benefits on the farms, giving them a dual purpose of providing a valuable habitat, while also growing the food we need for an increasing population.

I understand there will be non-believers who may try to impede my grand plan, but when I thought about it I realised that although we do not always have a lot of confidence in our politicians, they will see how much sense it makes.

And I am sure we will get support from the scientific community and the greenies, because they know only too well that at some point we must work out how we are going to feed not only our domestic population, but the billions who will be starving around the world.

My scheme can be a win:win:win - for humankind, the environment and our regional communities. Maybe I’m dreaming, but you never know!

Local club grants to encourage women into the game

Women only swim days at Aquamoves WOMEN across Greater Shepparton are being given the opportunity to partake in Women Only Swimming at Aquamoves as part of the ‘This Girl Can - Vic’ initiative.

Held on the first Saturday of every month from 5:30pm until 7:30pm, the women only swim days are extremely important to many within the community.

During the sessions, women can enjoy use of Aquamoves’ indoor aquatic facilities, with access to the 25m, leisure and hydrotherapy pools, as well as the spas and sauna.

Greater Shepparton City Council acting active living manager, Belinda Conna said, “Women who, for a whole range of reasons, would not normally visit a leisure facility, are now coming along to enjoy

Building on the success of VicHealth’s ‘This Girl Can – Victoria’ campaign, a number of clubs will receive funding to promote the campaign at their club as part of a state-wide movement to get more women active.

As part of this round of grants, funding for a wide range of popular sports and activities, from grassroots football and netball, to less traditional sports like orienteering and canoeing.

Active Ninja, a gymnastics class for kids with intellectual disabilities is included.

Upgrades to Kyabram football oval MAJOR renewal and upgrade works were u nder ta ken at t he Kyabra m Northern Oval in 2016 in consultation with the committee of management.

However, upon comple t ion , St Aug usti ne’s Ju n ior Football Club expressed concern about the orientation of the oval and the goal ends being located in close proximity to Tisdall Road. Their concerns were for the safety of the players having to retrieve balls kicked out of the reserve onto the road or the neighbouring property.

The project will involve adding nets behind the goals, as well as a renovation of the existing storage shed which will include the addition of a skillion to securely house mowers and other machinery undercover.

Campaspe Shire Council will provide project management for the works, while St. Augustine’s Junior Football Club alongside oval user groups will fund the installation of the nets and renovation of the shed.

Donation to help fund junior creativity

SUNSET Country Women’s Association (CWA) have dug deep in their pockets and generously donated funds to the Shepparton Show.

The funds raised will assist with the junior arts/craft section by covering entry fees, affording every child an opportunity

to enter their hand-made craft, cookery and art at the Shepparton Show.

The 143rd Annual Shepparton Show will be held on Friday, October 11 and Saturday, October 12 . Planning for the 2019 Shepparton Show is already well on the way, with plenty of great entertainment.
