A giant native fish hatchery so big it can be seen from space will provide a boost for local Indigenous employment, as well as providing an enormous incentive for the fishing industry and environment.

The new fish hatchery is a flagship commitment of the Labor Government’s ‘Target One Million’ plan to get more people fishing,

more frequently, and will grow millions of native fish annually to boost wild stocks for recreational fishers in Victorian rivers and lakes.

Up to six Indigenous positions will represent half the hatchery’s workforce, providing local opportunities for people keen on a career growing Murray cod (Burnanga), golden perch, silver perch and freshwater catfish.

Victoria’s biggest solar farm is here C U R R E N T LY h e l p i n g t o s u p p o r t Melbourne’s tram network, Victoria’s largest solar farm is now fully operational.

The $198 million Numurkah Solar Farm was officially opened last week by the Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio and Moira Shire Mayor, Cr Libro Mustica.

The 515ha solar farm, situated about 5km east of Wunghnu, is currently one of only two solar farms supplying 100 p erc ent renewable energ y to of f s e t Melbourne’s entire tram cost.

The facility will generate approximately 2 55, 0 0 0 me g awat t hou r s of cle a n , renewable energy into the national power grid each year. The emissions reduction delivered by this solar farm will be the equivalent of taking 75,000 cars off the road or planting 390,000 trees.

The Numurkah Solar Farm is part of the Renewable Certificate Purchasing Initiative and Solar Trams I nitiative, which is leveraging around $720 million in capital expenditure and creating 755 construction jobs and 33 ongoing jobs, all in regional Victoria.

Ms D’Ambrosio said, “The Numurkah Solar Farm will play an important role in supporting the transformation of our energy system towards clean, renewable energy and reaching our renewable energy target of 50 percent by 2030.

Victoria’s Renewable Energy Target ( V R ET) is increasing to 50 percent by 2030, meaning more clean energy is getting pumped back in to the grid, increasing investment and driving down energy prices.

It is expected that if the VRET target of 40 percent by 2025 is achieved, this will drive around $7.2 billion in investment and create more than 10,000 jobs, as we boost the amount of energy generated by renewable sources.

Our farmers are doing it tough AS we continue to experience one of the worst droughts in history, local farmers and families are being affected in so many ways.

Ensuring the well-being of farmers during these hard times is of paramount importance. The local community in Rushworth are doing their bit to show a hand of support, with the Waranga Medical Centre hosting a Farmers Wellness Day this Friday, July 26.

The event intends to provide farmers and their families with assistance in dealing with the effects of the drought

on farmer’s health, both physically and mentally, and to show them how to access financial assistance or support.

On the day, there will be several health professionals attending to offer support and guidance, including two nurses and a rural financial counselling adviser.

The Farmers Wellness Day will be held in conjunction with the Shearing for Kids with Cancer Day, running throughout the day at Barlow’s Shearing Shed at 3380 Bendigo Murchison Road, Wanalta this Friday, July 26.

A new way forward for tourism in regional Victoria VICTORIA’S regional communities are invited to have their say on the future of tourism across the state following the release of the Regional Tourism Review discussion paper.

The release of the discussion paper continues consultation held over the past few months across regional Victoria as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s program to enable improved outcomes for tourism and regional communities.

The Regional Tourism Review, launched in March, aims to find opportunities to better support tourism operators, encourage private investment, create more regional jobs and enhance local communities.

Figures released this week put the value of Victoria’s visitor economy at $30 billion, supporting 214,000 jobs including 86,000 in regional Victoria.

While regional Victoria has some of Australia’s premier natural, cultural, food and wine attractions, private investment, visitation and spending are below their potential levels.

The discussion paper has identified five key themes: strengthening our tourism offering, making the most of marketing spending, supporting industry, enhancing Regional Tourism Boards and better coordinating effort.

Handcrafted interactive gift assists memory Members of Shepparton Retirement Villages’ Bertram House were gifted an interactive fiddle board last week, designed and assembled over several months by the agedcare facility’s Men’s Shed group.

Covered in an array of gadgets, tools, technology and an assortment of other knick-knacks, the board is designed to activate the hands and minds of bored or isolated residents, especially those suffering with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

During a special unveiling event last week, Men’s Shed co-ordinator, Kevin Grover explained that a group of about fifteen residents and ten volunteers worked hard on the fiddle board twice a week for a couple of months.

“This is a fiddle board, but it’s sometimes referred to as a sensory board,” Kevin explained. “The idea was presented to us by one of the personal carers here to make something out in the garden that the fellas at Bertram House can interact with.”

Following the official unveiling, Kevin and resident of Hakea Lodge, Ed Penhall, demonstrated the gadgets featured on both sides of the fiddle board.

“Everyone remembers what this does,” Kevin said, spinning a bike wheel with a playing card lodged in the spokes. A noise echoed throughout the kitchen and the audible gasps and wide-eyes of the residents said it all.

Other features on the double-sided fiddle board include old car lights, handles and spinners, spanners, a triangle, dinner bell, plus a whole manner of other odds and ends that make a sound, light up or move.

Shepparton Villages public relations and marketing director, Jo Breen remarked that the board is a great asset to residents and took time to acknowledge the excellent work of the Men’s Shed.

“The Men’s Shed is a great space for residents to gather twice a week and enjoy each other’s company,” Mrs Breen said.

“Even though they might be tinkering on machinery, painting, making jigsaws or doing woodwork, the main part is about getting together to hang out.”

Community members donated roughly 90 percent of all materials used for the fiddle board, with Marshall Batteries donating the car battery.

The Shepparton Villages Men’s Shed is open from 10am until 2pm on Wednesday and Friday and members of the community are invited to purchase their handcrafted toys and other creations.

For the love of food and culture AN exciting new partnership between two local event organisers looks set to expand the Fryers Street Food Festival into broader, bigger and tastier territories.

Liz Connick of Your Project Partner and Jamie Lea of JL Productions are two local organisers well known for helping facilitate some of the most memorable and creative events throughout the region in recent years.

The Fryers Street Food Festival, now in its fourth year, is an annual celebration of food, community and entertainment. With delicious food stalls, market traders and live music, the event has become an important date on the local calendar and is something both of the new organisers are excited to sink their teeth into.

“I’m so excited to help bring some creativity and culture to the Maude Street Mall,” Ms Lea said. “I have watched this festival grow over the years and I can’t wait to work with Liz and execute all these new ideas we have swimming around.”

One of the new ideas suggested for the festival is to create a ‘Flavours of the World’ food event in the Maude Street Mall on the Friday prior. The family-friendly evening will bring together the diverse cultures and foods of the Goulburn Valley community for one big celebratory feast in the CBD. Other ideas include the addition of a ‘Hall of Handmade’ mini-market for local artists, makers and designers to show off and sell some of their handmade wares or homemade food.

“This region is filled with so many creative people and designers who are busy making these amazing little handmade items from their homes,” Ms Connick. “This new little zone within the festival hopes to celebrate the incredible creations of local makers and offer them an opportunity to promote and sell their goods.”

Australia’s largest water saving project on-track for completion WORKS are well underway for the Connections Project’s installation of new pipelines and automated, state-of-the-art irrigation delivery network for the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District (GMID).

On-track for 2020 completion, this $2 billion Victorian and Australian Government investment is continuing to convert the GMID from an ageing, leaking inefficient system to a modern delivery network. Now more than 80 percent complete, the project is on target to achieve its key objective of a total of 429GL water savings by October 2020 Project director Frank Fisseler said, “We are seeing farm businesses expand, innovate and diversify in response to the secure water supply via this efficient system.”

The Connections Project 2019 annual works program will see more than 100km of pipeline installed, decommissioning of more than 200km of channel, installation of more than 50 regulators, remediation of more than 5km of channel and actioning more than 500 meters.

The $2 billion Connections Project is Australia’s largest water savings and irrigation modernisation project and is funded by the Australian and Victorian governments.

Changes to kerbside waste collection RECENTLY, Greater Shepparton’s kerbside waste collection service underwent a change with Veolia Environmental Services taking over from Wheelie Waste. This was after Greater Shepparton City Council agreed to allow the current contractor Wheelie Waste to pass on their contract to Veolia.

Greater Shepparton City Council director of infrastructure, Phil Hoare said the change would not affect the community.

“Residents can be assured it is business as usual and there will be no disruptions to kerbside bin collections.

Veolia will be picking up the red, yellow and green lid bins as usual. The only change residents will notice is the branding on the trucks.”

Veolia’s group general manager for Tasmania and Victoria, Anthony Roderick said the decision allowed them to expand their operations in the Greater Shepparton Region.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Veolia as we build capability in northern Victoria and add further value to customers through fleet expansion and route optimisation.”

Charitable community event The community is encouraged to get together this Sunday, July 28 for an information session, which seeks to get to the core of a moral issue that has been felt throughout the region in recent times, homelessness.

With so many throughout the Goulburn Valley providing exceptional and ongoing actions driven by charity and empathy, the luncheon event seeks to raise awareness around the high numbers of homelessness in the region and bring together everyone in the community for a positive outcome.

Providing education with a difference LAST week, The Academy of Sport, Health and Education (ASHE) held an open day for parents, students, community and agencies to come and learn about what ASHE is and the great things they do. The open day was a big success and jam-packed with information about everything on offer for ASHE students.

ASHE is a program and initiative of the Rumbalara Football and Netball Club and the University of Melbourne. ASHE provides pathways to further education and employment for primarily young and mature-aged Aboriginal students through the provision of VCAL and vocational learning in a culturally safe and supported environment.

Last year, ASHE had over 100 students through their classes and programs, with 52 percent going onto further studies after ASHE.

ASHE offer a range of courses and pathways for students, including VCAL, trades, Certificate III in Early Childhood, Certificate IV in Community Services, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, and a Diploma of Nursing. They also help students with first-aid, RSA, OH&S and barista courses to make it easier for them to find employment.

ASHE believes that as well as education, health and wellbeing, holistic care and culture are just as important for their students. Enrolment is open year-round, making it easier for students to go in and try out the programs and courses they have to offer.

Vital radio service for people with a print disability faces permanent closure SH E PPA RTON ’ S Vision Australia Radio studio will send its final broadcast in coming months unless the federal government commits ongoing funding to the vital service.

Operated by Vision Australia, the radio service ensures people with a print disability have access to a range of printed material that may otherwise be off limits, and provide original programming tailored to their needs and interests.

Due to changes in the funding received by disability support organisations following the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Vision Aust ralia needs to secure $700,000 per year from the federal government to ensure t h e f ut u r e of t h e service.

OVER the last 50 years, the Goulburn Valley’s wineries have become a drawcard for both statewide and interstate travellers.

The Goulburn Valley’s abundance of water, warm climate and rich soils has enabled this region to consistently produce wine since the 1860s.

The principal grape grown in the Goulburn Valley for over a century, Shiraz remains capable of producing a red wine of great flavour and longevity. When young, the wines present ripe, rich fruit overtones, which then age to reveal darker fruits, with hints of pepper, dark chocolate, soft supple leather and earth.

Incredibly old Shiraz vines are still harvested at Tahbilk Winery, and were

originally planted in 1860, before the rampant phylloxera (a small insect that feeds on the roots of grapevines) destroyed many vineyards all over the world. Just 1.2 acres survives today and collectors from all over the world come to seek out this special wine.

More eyes in the skies to keep Victoria safe A new era of policing has arrived in Victoria, with the recent announcement of at least 50 new drones being deployed to keep more eyes in the skies.

Police will use unmanned aerial drones to help map crime scenes, support a wide range of police operations and provide support for search and rescue teams. The drones can be used during the day and at night for a range of operations, including forensically c apt u r i ng c r i me scene footage f rom a l l a ng le s w it h m i l l i m e t re precision.

LOCAL businesses are being urged to get prepared ahead of the state-wide ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags which is due to commence from November this year.

This new law will apply to all retailers and suppliers regardless of size or type – from supermarkets to fashion boutiques, from fast food outlets to petrol stations.

In the past Victorians have used over 1 billion plastic shopping bags every year. The majority of these bags end up in landfill and around 10 million end up as litter, polluting the environment and endangering wildlife.

The Victorian government has engaged the National Retail Association (NRA) to work with Victorian businesses in preparing for the ban.

The NRA has been visiting retailers in the Wodonga, Wangaratta, Benalla, Shepparton and Kilmore areas this week to provide advice for businesses preparing for the Victorian government’s plastic bag ban.

NRA manager of policy, David Stout, said it is vital that all businesses are up to speed with their responsibilities.

“Retailers should start to make the transition as soon as possible to avoid last minute decisions that may be costly and inconvenient for both their business and their customers.”

The two-year course will provide graduates with a Diploma of Applied S cience, majoring in aquaculture (fish farming).

Yorta Yorta elder, Uncle Cole Walker, welcomed the announcement during a media event last week.

“Yorta Yorta people have a long history

of fishing Burnanga in this region and can impart some of that ancient knowledge. We have a large number of men and women who would love to be involved,” Uncle Walker said.

During the announcement, the Minister for Fishing and Boating, Jaala Pulford took time to recognise Aboriginal project officer for VFA, Mike Gilby, for his fantastic work in partnership with Indigenous anglers and elders.

“This will provide a great opportunity for skills and careers development and to make this a world-class hatchery staffed by people with the perfect set of skills and knowledge

to create something truly special,” Ms Pulford said.

“Congratulations to everyone that’s been involved with this important and exciting project.”

Rob Loats, chair from VR Fisheries, added that this was also a truly wonderful occasion for recreational fishing. “ V R F i s h e r i e s h ave b e e n s t ro n g supporters of this new native fish hatchery and it is really enhanced by the fact that we have Indigenous employment. The new hatchery is connected with community, the Indigenous people, the environment and the fishers; it’s a wonderful day for Victoria

and we pass on our strong support and congratulations to the Labor Government for making this happen.”

Construction of the new hatchery is set to begin in 2020, once a suitable site has been selected, with completion expected in 2022.

Annual event encourages kids to play, learn and belong THE local community is being encouraged to come down to Western Park/All Abilities Playground next Friday, August 2, to take part in the 2019 National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day. The theme for the 2019 children’s day is ‘We Play, We Learn, We Belong’, promoting the critical importance for early education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

The day is acknowledged annually across Australia and is an opportunity for all Australians to show support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every child.

Currently, the majority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are thriving and growing up strong in their cultures, with

support from friends and family. However, some First Nations children still face ongoing challenges that stem from colonisation and its effects, including discrimination, poverty, systemic removal, intergenerational trauma, dislocation from land and culture, and community disempowerment.

Catholic Care Sandhurst communities for children project officer, Jessie BarnesHill said, “During our special event in Shepparton, there will be kids activities, stalls, giveaways, a barbecue lunch and much, much more.

“It is important that we are recognising stolen generations and giving a birthday to all of those children who don’t have a birth date.

It’s about raising awareness and giving the kids their own day – the next generation of elders need to be cared for.”

Further four years for council CEO MEMBERS of council gathered last week to reappoint Greater Shepparton City Council CEO, Peter Harriott for another four years.

All nine councillors passed the recommendation to reinstate the CEO, despite some concern raised around the decision to not advertise an expression of interest for the job.

M r H a r r iot t com menced as CEO for Greater Shepparton City Council on January 4, 2015. Prior to his work as CEO, Mr Harriott was previously CEO of Wattle Range Council in South Australia from 2013-2016, and director at Greater Shepparton City Council from 2000-2012.

A s pa r t of t he pro c e s s for reappointing Mr Harriott, a public notice was placed in the Shepparton News in June following the ordinary council meeting.

On July 2, councillors met to review the CEO’s contract, which included negotiated terms to be signed by Mr Harriott.

Mr Harriott will serve another four years as Greater Shepparton City Council CEO effective from January 4, 2020.

Authenticity, diversity and lifelong friendship

Exploring the enticing country roads of southern Italy and Sicily provided a group of travellers with an array of memorable moments that will be cherished forever.

The group, organised by Joe Bovalino and Lyn McNaught Travel, spent 14 days trekking around and enjoying the stunning scenery and incredible food on offer.

Everyone had a fantastic time exploring the sights and tastes and the group wished to share some quotes regarding their fantastic trip.

It really was a ‘Wow!’ every day, for one thing or another. The towns and cities, the roads/streets/ alleyways, the cars and the whole car story, the cliffs and buildings perched on cliffs, the magnificent scenery, the food, the hospitality… oh, I could go on and on!

Thank you both for your lovely company. You chose such a great group of people to travel to Italy with. We enjoyed every aspect of our trip, and your extra attention in looking after us made it perfect. We look forward to catching up with you and others from the trip in the near future.

Your advice and assistance to make sure we were all checked in for our return flight was also much appreciated. We both had such a fabulous experience and enjoyed the company of our fellow travellers.

It would be good if our travel group could catch up at some time.

A lot of your planning was evident, as we had so many ‘Wow!’ moments. I can remember many of these moments in Rome, with the Colosseum, Fountain of Trevi, St Peter’s Square, Vatican, Michelangelo ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, plus many more. We had a great group of fun people to travel with and I just wanted to thank you for our everyone mixed tour, which we thoroughly enjoyed. in happily. LOCAL HERITAGE LEFT TO RUBBLE Dear Editor, The heritage controls introduced by the Greater Shepparton City Council have been nothing but a mess. Many properties were reduced to rubble at the mention of heritage control and now there seems to be a very uneven selection of properties selected for coverage. The unlucky few that have received notice of Heritage Overlay on their properties should ask council for the list of properties that are covered by this overlay. Then take a walk around your area, taking note of the addresses that are of significant age, design and character that should be included in this heritage control but are not on the list. It is very surprising to see what has not been included. If the council wants to make up for the years of destruction of history in this area, there needs to be a fair selection of properties that are of genuine value to a heritage list.

LACK OF FORESIGHT EVIDENT Dear Editor, Apart from massive transition issues, common sense dictates the site chosen for the new super school is highly inadequate.

That alone should stop the super school transitioning until issues are addressed.

Landlocked already, inadequate parking, reduced recreation area, lack of forward guaranteed funding and multiple multistorey, high-density buildings catering for up to 3000 students on a site previously holding 542, there is no way but up (or build another school?) when the inevitable need to expand occurs.

City of Greater Shepparton population forecasts 2017 predicted an increase of 22.48%, from 67,958 in 2019 to 83,234 by 2036, a steady annual increase. Lack of foresight and no funding, demonstrates low regard for future site difficulties and an indefinite period of unnecessary transition.

Do not transition; blend the students from Shepparton High if it must be closed next year, and build first on a more suitable site.

Two new schools, north and south of town to cater for a growing population would be ideal and assuage the issue of parental choice and travel, having a comparable amount of students to most amalgamated suburban schools in each with room for expansion.

Verney Road School website shows problems that eventuate with lack of forward planning. “The buildings are modern; however, six portable classrooms have been added to meet the growing population. The school is landlocked by a housing estate on the north and a primary school on the west.

Space for the students is at a premium and play times are alternated to accommodate each unit. The majority of students travel to school by contract buses, a small cohort travel independently on mainstream buses and approximately sixty students travel daily with parents/carers by car. Play, car and bus parking space is at a premium.”

Do we want overcrowding, staggered recreation times, no alternative, with recreation and transport parking space at a premium for future school communities?

When these problems can’t be addressed for a special needs public state school of 188, what funding or support can you expect, for this

white elephant?

According to ABC Wimmera reporter, Jessica Black, “T he Warracknabeal c om mu n it y h a s b e en f ig ht i ng for Government funding for the precinct for over 15 years to amalgamate the town’s primary school, special developmental school and secondary college onto the same campus.

Stage one of the construction of the precinct was finished in November but the State Government has not allocated funding for stage two, and parents have said none of the classrooms built so far are fit for purpose.”

O t her reg ional schools i nclud i ng Benalla P-12, Echuca Specialist School and Baimbridge College, Hamilton have waited years for projects or upgrades to be completed and experienced budget cuts, leaving many students in half-finished schools.

Public schools will miss out on up to $5 billion over 10 years due to the Gonsky 2.0 funding deal manipulated by the Victorian government, the lowest funder of public schools nationwide, which allows for previously excluded costs of up to 4% for other education costs that do not directly contribute to teaching, undermining the strategy of improving results for disadvantaged students with needs-based funding, and more funding going to nongovernment schools.

Funding issues will prevent this school becoming a reality in anything but name only, causing associated transition issues to a whole generation of Shepparton families indefinitely.

COMMENTS AROUND CONSTITUTION RECOGNITION Dear Editor, Whilst I accept that there are a range of views within our community, regarding the Uluru Statement from the Heart and the debate around constitutional recognition of Australia’s First Peoples. What I cannot accept is comments – such as those recently attributed to Damian Drum.

Last week, Mr Drum was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald as saying “I’ve never supported a third chamber. I don’t think mainstream Australia supports a third chamber. And the sooner a third chamber is taken off the agenda the quicker we are going to reach true reconciliation.”

Mr Drum is doing himself and his constituents a disservice by keeping the erroneous idea of a fabled ‘third chamber’ alive. The fact is that the Uluru Statement has only ever been a proposed voice to parliament, not a voice of parliament.

I find it frustrating and rather galling that the Member for Nicholls, representing Victoria’s largest Aboriginal population outside Melbourne, would perpetuate such a falsehood. I call on Mr Drum to actually read the statement and engage in good faith with this debate, for the good of Indigenous Australia and the nation as a whole.

STRONG CLUB HISTORY… Shepparton United Football Club celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of their halcyon years three-peat of 1987, 1988 and 1989 with a weekend of celebrations. Photo: Katelyn Morse.

It’s a great club One of the great things about any success in a football club, besides holding the cup up, is the bonds that are forged and the reunions over the years that follow.

Shepparton United celebrated the halcyon years of 1987, 1988 and 1989, which resulted in the last three-peat in the GVL. It started with a dinner on Friday night in the H.T Luck clubrooms at Deakin Reserve with some of the biggest names from United’s past making speeches. Speeches were made by the coaches, Richard Warburton and Graeme Weatherly, president and spiritual leader, Ian Marritt and Norm Smith medallist, Shaun Hart - who

played in the 1989 premiership.

It was spine-tingling stuff that had hairs on the back of the neck standing for anyone who was present. This was a room full of the legends of the club.

It flowed on into Saturday at Deakin and many a story was told.

For all the current club people to witness the bonds and friendships from these former premiership stars, it really does paint the picture of why sporting clubs are one of the greatest things in Australian culture.

Fantastic fundraising effort from local footy club EACH year, the Shepparton United Football and Netball Club’s Girls U18 team provide a great community service. Over the past two years, the team has spent an evening serving and dining with residents of one of the local aged care facilities and raising funds for the Breast Cancer Network and the local cancer treatment centre in Shepparton.

This year, the team set out to raise funds for Down Syndrome Victoria – a cause close to the heart of the club, as co-captain Kate Adams’ younger sister, Eliza, has Down Syndrome.

The team held their fundraiser lunch last week after their game against Shepparton Bears and managed $700, which has already been directly donated to Down Syndrome Victoria.

Club coach Dean Walton said, “We may have only been around for three years but we have ensured that each year we have given back to the community in some way.

“It is important that we are not just about playing football, we are about personal development as well. I could not be prouder of the girls and what they have achieved both on and off field.”

RESIDENTS of the Goulburn Valley are gearing up for the Hockey Australia National Country Championships, following a blockbuster game between Essendon and Altona at McEwan Reserve on Saturday.

Players, coaches and officials arrived in Shepparton last week to show to off to locals the highest level of hockey in Australia.

The game is a mere teaser for the forthcoming 2019 Hockey Australia National Country Championships, which will run from August 3-11 at Shepparton Sports City.

The event, which was first played as a men’s only competition in 1982, will bring together 12 teams across both genders, with approximately 250 participants plus supporters.

Greater Shepparton City Council

Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said: “It is wonderful that Greater Shepparton is able to host yet another fabulous national event in our region.

“Bringing so many people from around Australia to play hockey at our new $21 million Shepparton Sports City facility has enabled us to host amazing events such as these.

“Events such as these are fantastic to strengthen our reputation as the sporting event capital of regional Aust ra l ia a nd keepi ng t he local economy strong and businesses busy.”
