Planting the seeds for a new $160 million facility SHEPPARTON looks set to get a whole lot greener, with medicinal cannabis company, Cannatrek announcing that it has received planning permission from the Greater Shepparton City Council to build Australia’s biggest cannabis production facility in the region.

When completed, the $160 million facility will be one of the world’s largest medicinal cannabis facilities, creating more than 400 jobs annually for the Greater Shepparton area and beyond.

TWO talented writers from Shepparton were recently awarded a prize and given the unique opportunity to read their stories in front of a large audience.

Eliza Brodie and Ivan Estebeth submitted their work for the Dulcie Stone Writers C ompetition u nder t he 2019 t heme ‘Having a Say’. The Dulcie Stone Writers Competition is a partnership between VALiD and Writers Victoria and is designed to showcase the voices of people with intellectual disability.

Eliza and Ivan dedicated many hours in their story-writing program at Shepparton Access to planning their pieces and writing about their personal experiences. Both Eliza and Ivan submitted powerful stories about the challenges in their lives and their hopes for a better future.

Ivan introduced his experience with: “Come on slowpoke, cry baby,” said an annoying voice. “You’re too slow; you always walk in slow motion.” I can’t do this anymore I thought as I wiped tears from my eyes. I was teased, I did not like it one little bit. I sobbed so much my hanky was soaking wet. This happened every day in and out of school.

And Eliza conducted her story with: I think it is important to have my say in things that affect me; if I am doing what

Turning pages and turning heads ENTHUSIASTIC students throughout Australia got dressed up as their favourite character for Book Week 2019, which ran last week from August 17 until August 23.

Each year, The Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together to celebrate reading. During this time, children, teachers, schools, libraries, booksellers, authors and illustrators celebrate Australian children’s literature.

Thousands of children dress up as a character from their favourite book and take part in character parades, read books and visit libraries.

Bourchier Street Primary School students, Khyara (age 12) and Ka’Mya (8) turned heads and wowed audiences with their spectacular outfits at Friday’s parade, which was the result of imaginative creativity and lots of hard work from their mum, Amba Motto.

Ka’Mya dressed up as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Khyara went dressed as Alice in Wonderland for book week. The girls’ outfits took about three months of dedication to make, with their mum, Amba working on the pieces whenever she had a spare moment.

“Council approved approximately $33.5 million worth of development across the Strathbogie Shire last year, and Nagambie and surrounds accounted for more than half of that development,” Cr McClaren said.

Nagambie Lake brings huge numbers of visitors for countless regattas, competitions and training camps, particularly GoFish Nagambie on ANZAC Day weekend, which attracted over 20,000 people to the region.

The new Nagambie Visitor Information Centre is located at 293 High Street, Nagambie and is open from 10am until 4pm, seven days a week.

New program helps prepare students for high school THERE’S no denying that the transition period between Grade 6 and Year 7 is one of the trickiest times for students.

Not only must students comprehend a completely different schooling system for high school, but they must also familiarise with the new school setting, new teachers and friends, all the while adjusting to the unfamiliar emotional and physical changes of adolescence.

To help curb some of the worry students feel surrounding this period, the Family Mental Health Support Service team at CatholicCare Sandhurst will be hosting a support group for students in Grade 6 who are transitioning into Year 7.

Facilitated by CatholicCare staff, Jack O’Sullivan and Sarah Langley, meetings will cover various topics related to school and life, as well as exploring different values. The group will also engage in ice breaking group activities and encouraged to have fun, with members given the chance to help plan and facilitate a social outing.

CatholicCare family mental health caseworker, Jack O’Sullivan said the weekly meetings were specifically designed to help those who are unsure about transitioning, or those from vulnerable homes looking to just find a comfortable and safe space to chill and chat.

“It’s just about having fun and opening up the students’ world to different experiences to help prepare them with the confidence and skills needed to make the transition into high school a little easier,” Jack said.

The free program will run after school hours and have a fixed enrolment, meaning the same small group get together weekly and stay throughout the entire process. The closed group will help to encourage a sense of responsibility and community, as well as facilitating new friendships.

Rochester man recognised for his bravery

Selfless Australians have been recognised and celebrated recently as part of the 2019 Australian Bravery Medal awards.

This year, 17 Australians have received the medal, including Mr Lyle Collins from Rochester, who was awarded for saving his neighbour from a swarm of bees.

At about 6pm on February 6, 2018, Mr Collins was assisting his neighbour to remove an old fence post from his rural property. As the pair used a tractor to pull the post to a nearby road, they disrupted a wild beehive, with the bees becoming aggressive, agitated and swarming into the air.

A number of bees quickly flew towards Mr Collins’ older neighbour and covered his face, arms and bodies in a thick layer. Seated in the cab of his tractor, Mr Collin’s told his neighbour to run but the man couldn’t hear him.

By now, many bees had entered the cab of the tractor, forcing Mr Collins to get out, with bees stinging him now too. He then ran 400 metres to his neighbours’ house in order to quickly collect items to help provide some protection from the swarm of bees.

Mr Collins raced back to his neighbour, who had fallen to the ground and was absolutely covered in constantly stinging bees. Amidst being stung himself, Mr Collins used towels to remove the bees from his neighbour and covered him with a sheet. He then used insecticide on the bees, which caused them to become more agitated.

Mr Collins was then able to drag his neighbour away from the area. Soon, emergency services arrived on the scene and both men were taken to hospital where they were treated for their extensive bee injuries.

By his actions, Mr Collins displayed considerable bravery and was awarded for his efforts.

BUSI N ESSE S around the region are being encouraged to take part in Greater Shepparton City Council’s Urban Forest Strategy and One Tree Per Child movement by holding a corporate planting day.

On Monday, August 26, ten staff members from Tatura-based company Unilever traded their desks for fresh air, setting a new record as the largest company to participate in a planting session.

The major goal of the Urban Forest Strategy is to increase canopy cover in Greater Shepparton to 40 percent. Trees can provide share, public amenity and green

spaces for residents to enjoy, and also have strong economic and environmental beliefs.

For businesses, the benefits of planting help promote a positive work-life balance and provide a relaxing and rewarding experience for staff.

In 2019, Greater Shepparton City Council aims to plant 22,000 new plants and with the help from companies like Unilever, that target seems very achievable.

ST U DE N TS from St Mel’s Primar y School took part in a special challenge on Monday, participating in the annual ‘Write a Book in a Day’ competition, run by The Kids’ Cancer Project.

For the project, ten Grade 5 and 6 students from the school were given a brief and then within 12 hours they were challenged to write, illustrate, bind and submit a storybook of up to 2,500 words.

Each book will be then donated to children undergoing treatment in hospitals around Australia.

The students were given their brief at 8am continued working hard on their book at the school through to 8pm. In their brief, the group were told they had to write a book appropriate for children aged 10 to

16 and their story had to include a trapeze artist, journalist and koala.

Group leader, Nathan Secchi said, “This is an event that inspires collaboration and community spirit while the students have fun writing and illustrating a book.”

In order to qualify for judging and have the chance to receive one of the coveted awards, each school team must raise at least $240 in sponsorship donations, which will go toward childhood cancer research.

So far, the group has already raised almost $350.

August Council Meeting Wrap This month’s Council Meeting endorsed a number of important items and plans for the community.

Contract 1922 – Design of Maude Street Mall Precinct Redevelopment Greater Shepparton City Council accepted the tender submitted by Group GSA Pty Ltd for Contract No. 1922 Design of Maude Street Mall Precinct Redevelopment for a lump sum of $499.950.

The contract is for the provision of consultancy services to prepare a functional design, business case, detailed design and documentation of works identified for the Maude Street Mall precinct redevelopment, sufficient to enable tendering and construction of the works.

Five tenders were received and evaluated against the selection criteria. Group GSA is the highest scoring tender as evaluated by the selection criteria and reinforced their suitability for the project during the bid presentation and interview process.

Sponsorship Policy Council adopted the Sponsorship Policy at the August Ordinary Council Meeting.

In 2018 an internal audit was undertaken on Council’s Community Grants and Sponsorship.

As part of the audit process a number of recommendations were made, some of which related specifically to the provision of sponsorship and the process being followed. The Sponsorship Procedure has now been reviewed and updated in the form of a Sponsorship Policy, in response to the audit recommendations and findings.

The Sponsorship Policy can be viewed on Council’s website.

Project updates Balaclava Road/Verney Road Intersection Upgrade Works commenced recently at the major intersection, converting the roundabout intersection into T intersection. Temporary traffic signals have been installed to control the flow of traffic.

In the near future there will be works undertaken for the construction of kerb and channel on the northern half of the worksite.

Shepparton Art Museum Work is progressing well on the new Shepparton Art Museum building with the ground floor slab for both the loading dock and main structure complete.

ALL around the Goulburn Valley, solar energy has been taking off. Thanks to our phenomenal weather, advancements in technology and government rebates, the solar industry in the region has helped create savings on energy costs, facilitate swathes of new employment and, most importantly, reducing harmful emissions.

As part of an ambitious, $75 million project, La Trobe University’s Shepparton campus is one of 20 separate projects that will ensure La Trobe will have net zero emissions by 2029.

Net zero emissions, also known as carbon neutrality, refer to achieving net zero carbon dioxide emissions by balancing carbon emissions with removal. Often referred to as carbon offsetting, this is sometimes achieved by businesses or corporations engaging in projects that reduce the emission of greenhouse gases in the short- or long-term.

Common examples include the installation of wind farms or solar panels, planting trees, or utilising biomass energy.

The Shepparton campus is assisting La Trobe in achieving overall net zero emissions thanks to the 115 solar panels already installed, which supplies 36 percent of the campus’ daytime power usage when running at the peak of solar efficiency. As part of

the new project, the campus will now also have 900 high-efficiency low cost LED lights installed by the end of 2019, which will help further offset carbon emissions.

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor, John Dewar said the university was committed to making real change for long-term benefit.

“L a Trobe recog nises the social, environmental and economic importance of reducing our carbon footprint. That’s why we have set an ambitious target to become the first university in Victoria to meet this important goal.

“Not only is reducing our carbon emissions the right thing to do; it also makes good economic and environmental sense.

Rather than simply buying carbon credits, we’ve got a clear plan for action and we are making genuine, local changes to become more efficient and make a deliberate switch to renewables,” Professor Dewar said.

Over 3,300 have already been installed on rooftops across La Trobe University’s regional campuses in Shepparton, Mildura, Bendigo and Albury-Wodonga and more than 50,000 high-efficiency low cost LED globes will be progressively installed to help permanently reduce overall power consumption.

Free industry workshop for musicians

To help share important industry information and encourage locals to learn everything they need to know, The Push, Music Victoria and JL Productions are presenting This Must Be the Place, a music industry development workshop to help Shepparton locals gain valuable knowledge from experienced professionals and artists.

T he free workshop is aimed at songwriters, music fans and music industry practitioners seeking valuable knowledge about the music industry. Participants will hear from acclaimed musicians Olympia and N’fa Jones (from 1200 Techniques) about how they got their start, the highlights of their career so far and what it means to exist in the music industry today.

Pa r ticipants w ill also have the

opportunity to partake in small, round robin group sessions with music industry professionals Triple J Unearthed, APRA AMCOS, Ditto Music and also spend valuable time with an artist manager and music publicist. During the special event, members from local group Heard Instinct Collective will also be performing.

The Push’s music industry pathways coordinator, Lou James said, “We’re excited to celebrate Shepparton and it’s emerging music culture. We hope this professional development workshop will increase the skills and networks of local musicians, music fans and industry practitioners.”

Zucchini & Tomato Bake A really easy and tasty veggie dish for two zucchini, tomatoes, cheese. Serve with bread and salad as a main.

INGREDIENTS: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 4 zucchini, sliced • 1 large clove garlic, crushed • 1125g thinly sliced mozzarella cheese • 4 large tomatoes, peeled and sliced • 30g grated Parmesan cheese • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil • Salt and freshly ground black pepper.

1. Preheat oven to 190 degrees C. Move oven rack into the top third of the oven.

2. Heat the olive oil in a large frypan over medium heat, and spread the zucchini slices into the frypan in a single layer. If they don't fit, cook them in batches. Sprinkle pieces of garlic over the zucchini, and cook until the zucchini are golden brown on both sides, about 8 minutes per side. Remove from heat.

3. Arrange the slices of zucchini in an 23x30cm glass baking dish, alternating with slices of mozzarella cheese and tomato, so that the slices overlap each other in a neat row pattern. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese and basil over the dish, and season to taste with salt and pepper.

4. Bake in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and brown and the dish is bubbling, about 30 minutes.

Helping local families in need SHEPPARTON Marketplace is aiming to raise over $3,000 in donations to assist local community organisation, the Caroline Chisholm Society - Goulburn Valley Pregnancy and Family Support Service (CCS-GV), in a two-week donation drive to support families that need it most in our local community.

Relying solely on donations and solely on volunteers to provide a range of free essential services to pregnant women and families, last year CCS-GV helped over 600 local families.

Huge cash boost for our hospitals S E RV I C E S of f e r e d b y h o s p it a l s throughout the region are set to receive a much-needed cash boost, thanks to $237.58 million in funding from the Victorian Government.

Several hospitals in the region will benefit specifically from the funding, with GV Health set to receive $213.79 million and Nathalia, Cobram and Numurkah Health (NC N Health), is set to receive $23.79 million. Other hospitals set to receive some of the funding include $57.19 million for Echuca Region Health, $17.66 million for Kyabram & District Health Services and $7.01 million for Rochester and

Elmore District Health.

The announcement was made as part of the Labor Governments recordbreaking $11. 5 billion investment in hospitals in Victoria. This means hospitals are set to share in 10 percent more funding than the previous 12 months.

The funding boost looks set to help as the population in Victoria continues to rise exponentially, ensuring our hospitals can provide the very best treatment and care to the 1.8 million Victorians expected to access emergency departments in the coming 12 months.

Receive the latest for the start of irrigation season A DIGI TA L newsletter containing important information relating to the start-of-season has been produced by Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) for irrigation and diversion customers.

With the recent commencement of gravit y irrigation season, the newsletter contains updates on current conditions, storage levels and inflows, as well as the latest seasonal determination.

GM W general manager customers and stakeholders, Ann Telford said, “Customers can also find information and new resources to help them monitor the water market, manage their water entitlement and prepare for dry seasonal conditions.”

COMMUNITY members are being encouraged to have their voices heard at a forthcoming crisis rally at Tocumwal over the impacts the Murray-Darling Basin Plan is having on regional communities.

The rally, which is expected to be the largest in the history of the region, will take place on Thursday, September 5 from 11am on the Tocumwal foreshore.

All basin water ministers have been invited, plus Minister for Water Resources, David Littleproud and Minister for Environment, Sussan Ley. Rally co-organiser, John Lolicato said, “It is a shame that we have to take this sort of action to be heard, but we do not see an option.

“Our federal politicians seem to be on a different planet and, for reasons which we cannot fathom, appear prepared to sacrifice southern New South Wales, as well as the Goulburn Valley and northern Victoria, for a failed, poorly implemented Basin Plan.

“Mr Littleproud may be content to see our communities become collateral damage for the disaster that he is overseeing, but we won’t go down without a fight.”

Moving mountains to make the mall great again continued from front page ACCORDING to the plan, Option 4 will include introducing one-way traffic to enter the Maude Street Mall from Fryers Street and exit on to Stewart Street. Twoway traffic will be allowed to travel in to the Maude Street Mall from High Street, with a roundabout planned for placement a little closer to the centre than where the playground is currently situated.

As part of the redevelopment plan, there will be a water play park and playground in front of the cinema, plus an urban lawn space. There will also be 41 new car parks and shared bike lanes.

Last week during an ordinary council meeting, Greater Shepparton City Council awarded the contract for the detailed design of the Maude Street Mall Precinct Redevelopment to Melbourne’s Group GSA. The design work will begin around September 2019 and is expected to run to early-mid 2020.

Council will conduct consultation during the design stage on aspects that affect the public and traders, including the potential for implementation staging. Construction of the development is subject to funding, which councillors will start lobbying for once the design has been received.

Greater Shepparton City Council Deputy Mayor, Cr Shelley Sutton said council

undertook an extensive and rigorous tender process to select the design consultant.

“Council is extremely pleased that the detailed designed and the development of a business case will now progress,” Cr Sutton said.

“Group GSA was the highest scoring tenderer after detailed assessment against the evaluation criteria, and reinforced its suitability for the project during the presentation and interview process.

“The Group GSA tender includes the use of local subcontractors including engineering and survey components, and the team demonstrated a track record in delivering similar projects for regional and metropolitan areas.”

Shepparton Chamber of Commerce and Industry executive officer, Lucy Cerrone says she has been talking with business owners and community members about the mall ever since she first joined the board, way back in 1994.

“This is a very exciting day for us and something we are very passionate about.

The Mall has been a topic of discussion for business for many years and we are keen now to encourage everyone now to move on with the job and get it done.”

According to council, the business case is expected to be released early to mid next year, with construction set to commence shortly afterwards.

Thanks to the Goulburn Valley’s abundant hours of sun and access to water, the region is ideal for growing the cannabis sativa plant.

With the right amounts of sun and water, the cannabis sativa plant, which is technically a weed, has a full life cycle of only eight to twelve weeks. As a result, Cannatrek will produce a whopping 160 tonnes of medicinal cannabis annually when operating at capacity, affording the ability to export into other markets.

As of July 2019, Australian authorities, under the Special Access Scheme (SAS), have granted approximately 11,500 approvals for the use of medicinal cannabis. The SAS refers to arrangements that provide for the import and/or supply of unapproved therapeutic goods for a single patient, on a case-by-case basis. The billion-dollar Australian medicinal cannabis industry is forecasting an estimated 20,000+ approvals by the end of 2020.

For thousands of years, cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes. Recently, advancements in technology and legislative change have seen governments around the world loosening and amending laws to embrace this medical resource.

From 2020, secondary students in the Shepparton region will have an unprecedented choice of subjects to explore their passions and develop pathways for the jobs of the future.

Greater Shepparton College (interim name) will offer all VCE subjects, a VCAL program and a broad range of VET options.

Students will no longer need to travel out of Shepparton, or attend virtual classes, to study subjects of their choice as currently happens.

Around 80 VCE and VET subjects along with a full VCAL program will be offered to students.

This is a significant increase compared with the number of subjects currently on offer at the four existing schools.

Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning Megan Michalaidis says local students will have greater access to subjects than ever before.

“We want all students to have the choice of subjects that suit their strengths, pathways and aspirations.”

“This means students will no longer need to grapple with distance education or travel between schools to study their favourite subjects.”

The final number of subjects delivered in 2020 will be confirmed at the end of September after students make their final subject preferences in the coming weeks. While all VCE and VET subjects will be offered, the delivery of subjects will be based on student interest.

All existing pathways, VET and VCAL options will remain available to students at the new school.

All senior students (Years 11-12) will start school in 2020 at the Wanganui and McGuire campuses. Subjects will be delivered at two campuses, eliminating the current need for students to move between four schools to study their subjects of choice.

The program will focus on supporting handson learning, self-development, resilience, selfdetermination, community connections, and student leadership.

Teachers are also creating an innovative curriculum which will include a strong literacy and numeracy focus.

Literacy and Numeracy will be the focus of the Year 7 curriculum. Students will also study Humanities, Science, Languages other than English (LOTE), Physical Education, Arts and Technology subjects.

Each semester Year 7s will have the opportunity to investigate real life applications through the integration of science and humanities.

Year 7s will also learn organisation and study skills to assist in their transition to secondary school through the Learning Mentor Program.

A dedicated review of Year 8 and Year 10 curriculum will occur in 2020. Meantime, there will be no change to the Year 8 curriculum at Mooroopna and McGuire campuses while Wanganui Campus will combine what has been offered at Shepparton High School.

Student camps for Years 7 and 9 will continue in 2020.

All students will have the opportunity to learn about the cultures, histories and knowledge of the Goulburn Murray region’s Indigenous people through the Kaiela Dhungala First People’s Curriculum.

Ride down I’M IM AGI N I NG myself seated astute atop one of these outrageous ‘sociable tricycles.’ My partner sits beside me, her fingers dangerously close to the spinning forks at her side, watching the world fly by and tipping our caps to pedestrians below.

Every time I look at this 1882 Apollo Sociable Tricycle from Singer & Co., I laugh. I imagine late 19th-century travellers exercising circus-like balancing skills to keep from toppling over in an overdressed heap.

But somehow, they did it; at least for a little while.

Originally purchased in the early 1880s, the Apollo was dropped from catalogues as soon as 1886. Weighing in at about 73kg and with 117cm wheels, very few of these remain as its size made it very difficult to store. The tiny wheels at the very rear prevented the tricycle from tipping backwards as you accelerate and the design meant accidents were common.

This particular tricycle was shipped out to Australia from England as a gift from a loving Aunt in England. An expensive gift no doubt, one that would have cost approximately £36 in the 1880s for purchase alone (equivalent to about £4,116 or $7,360 in 2019).

covers every conceivable size, shape and style of bicycle and tricycle, spanning about 150 years. Most of their bikes are from before the year 1900, with the newest being made in approximately 1910.

Lucky locals will get the chance to experience many of these spectacular antiques in all their glory at the Shepparton Heritage Rally this Sunday, September 1. Dozens of bikes from the collection will be on display and there will even be riding demonstrations to test your balance and see how difficult it would have been to control these clunky beasts.

In news that’s extra exciting for local bicycle fans, Charlie Farren will also be in attendance for the heritage day, sharing stories of her many years as one of the world’s premier bicycle collectors.

Shepparton Heritage Rally promises to be a wonderful celebration of antiquity, with a huge range of heritage farm machinery and equipment, cars, aircraft, trucks and just about anything else old and motor-related to go on display alongside the great old bikes, both indoors and outdoors at Emerald Bank.

What on earth is

art deco?

It’s one of the most popular trends in modern home design for 2019. You may have heard the term art deco bubbling up on certain lifestyle blogs, particularly on the back of the current season of The Block, where contestants are struggling to make sense of the ‘modern art deco’ brief set by the judges.

Characteristics of the art deco movement in the decorative arts and architecture originated in France in the 1920s and developed into a major style in western Europe and the US during the 1930s. Now, almost exactly 100 years later, the style is making a major resurgence.

Art deco design represented modernism turned into fashion. Its products included both individually crafted luxury items and mass-produced wares, but, in either case, the intention was to create a sleek and anti-traditional elegance that symbolised wealth and sophistication.

The art deco style oozed luxury and opulence, with colours of white and gold, royal blue, dark green and soft pink. Geometric shapes, glamour and excess were also quite typical of the style.

Today, many are adopting the art deco style into their

homes by adding exotic finishes such as pearl or tortoiseshell, displaying artwork and sculptures, bold colours, dramatic Hollywood elegance, neutral finishes and regal influences.

Art deco was also all about curves, lots of delightful curves, especially on the exterior and interior walls, and shapes geometric shapes jutting across everywhere.

In Shepparton, there are quite a few remnants of the art deco style around town. The old Shepparton Law Courts and the Terminus Hotel are two prime local examples of the art deco style.

Each week there will be a prize of $25 to be spent at selected supporting businesses.

All you have to do is place a tick against the football team that you think will win each game. Be careful with your selections as only correct entries will go into the draw for the weekly $25 voucher.

If no correct entry is received the prize will jackpot each week until a correct entry is submitted.

Entries will only be accepted at the office, 219-225 Wyndham Street, Shepparton, no later than 5pm on each Friday during 2019, unless stated otherwise due to early matches being played. Consider a career in the sporting industry If you are passionate about sports and would rather a hands-on learning experience over a textbook, look no further than SEDA College for VCAL senior secondary education. SEDA College offers years 11 and 12 students fantastic opportunities to work with the local community as well as state sporting industry partners such as AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria, Football Federation Australia and Cricket Australia to give students the most out of their education.

From coaching and leadership, to athlete development even sports technology, SEDA College covers everything needed to get into the sporting industry, as well as providing pathways into university if students want to further their education.

On Monday, August 26, SEDA ambassadors, ex-AFL player Dustin Fletcher and ex-NBA player Chris Anstey ran a clinic full of information and activities for the Shepparton SEDA students.

Dustin Fletcher said, “We want every SEDA student to just do the best they can. You never know when an employment opportunity could come around and SEDA is a great way to get students’ feet in the door.”

Keeping the kids moving WITH a background in PE teaching and a passion for fitness, local Nathan Reid knows the importance of keeping kids active and fit for both mental and physical health.

He noticed there weren’t many after school programs in the Goulburn Valley that focused on fitness, and so Kids on the Move was born.

Kids on the Move is an eight week course providing kids with fun fitness activities to keep them fit and healthy and give them something to do after school. The program includes three different classes on Monday nights from 4pm, starting with the Junior Movers for six to nine year olds, the Challengers for 10 to 12 year olds, and the Reid Human Performance program for 13 to 17 year olds.

The Junior Movers class focuses on fun fitness games, team building activities, and kid workouts. The Challengers class, as the name suggests, is more challenging and focuses on juggling, ball control, and developing strength. The Reid Human

Performance class focuses on developing fundamental movement patterns, reducing the risk of injury and increasing strength and hand-eye coordination. All classes have a major focus on building resilient young community members through developing growth mindsets and giving them a sense of belonging.

Nathan said, “Not all kids want to join a sports team but that doesn’t mean they can’t improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Our program gives them the chance to have fun, be active and socialise outside of school hours.”

The program has seen children from over 10 Goulburn Valley primary and secondary schools enrol so far in 2019.
