Celebrating an awesome group of superheroes IF you were lucky enough to get the chance to meet Kyzaiah Atkinson, his amazing personality would have left a lasting impact.

The eleven-year-old Verney Road Primary School student was a much-loved character, completely obsessed with superheroes and horror movies. According to those closest to the young man, his charm was completely infectious.

Sadly, Kyzaiah passed away in his home on Friday, August 16, after a long battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a severe muscle-wasting condition that affects 1 in 3,500 boys, and in some rare cases, girls too. He was eleven years old.

Great weather welcomes huge crowds to market WITH the sun shining brighter than it had in weeks, excited locals and traders packed out Shepparton’s CBD last Friday and Saturday for the annual Winter City Market.

Held on the last two days of winter (a season I’m sure everyone

would agree felt like forever), the CBD was in full bloom, with the spring-like weather blessing all shoppers who were out and about and excited to grab a bargain.

The events, titled ‘Writing for Social Media’ and ‘Social Media Strategy’, were hosted by Liz Connick from Your Project Partner and held in collaboration between Google, Infoxhange and NBN. The two events focussed on digital skills development and writing for social media, particularly for small businesses in the tourism field.

Infoxchange digital inclusion training coordinator, Stephanie Livingstone said the Shepparton leg of the festival was well attended by a diverse mixture of people from small business and the not-for-profit sector.

Rallying together to save public land MORE than 500 spirited members and supporters of the Bush User Groups united rallied in Spring Street, Melbourne last week, in response to proposed restrictions in park access.

The impending and detailed government report from the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC) recommends changes to the types of activities allowed on certain parks across central-west Victoria.

If adopted, the report proposes recommendations that would significantly limit the activities of Victorian bush users, including firewood gatherers, recreational miners and prospectors, horse riders, 4WD enthusiasts, hunters and bushwalkers. More than 77,000 ha of public land will be locked up if the Victorian government adopts the recommendations.

The Nationals Member for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy attended the event alongside other Nationals members and politicians, stating that bush users and their families, from both country Victoria and the city, were together on a unity ticket against losing access to public land.

“Public land should be exactly that – for the public – but under Labor, all Victorians who enjoy recreational activities like camping, 4WDing, horse riding, prospecting or hunting are being pushed out.

“If the Andrews Labor Government adopts VEAC’s recommendations, access for many of these activities will be severely restricted or stopped altogether,” Mr McCurdy said.

A petition, tabled by Shadow Minister for Public Land Use and The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria, Melina Bath, received nearly 4,500 signatures in support of public land staying for the enjoyment of the public.

Busloads of locals from throughout the Goulburn Valley were in attendance for the Melbourne rally.

The Victorian Government has until February 2020 to consider the recommendations in the VEAC report.

Local businesses dig deep to contribute to a great cause FROM men’s sheds to volunteer firefighters, school camps to local hospitals, the iGiveLocal Community Support Program donates money to support community groups all over Australia.

Now in its fourth consecutive year, the program has donated over $100,000 to more than 190 local causes around the country.

Poor tinned milk sales spells the end for Tongala factory THE TINY Victorian town of Tongala is reeling following the shock announcement that Nestlé will be closing its factory, putting 106 locals out of work.

T he fac tor y, wh ich t he compa ny pu rchased back i n 1971, pr i m a r i ly produced tinned milk products. Following closure, production will be shifted to offshore factories, mainly in New Zealand.

Employees at Tongala’s Nestlé factory have an average age of 45 years old and have have been employed there for an average of 13 years.

The news comes as a shock to most in the town, many of which thought that the plant had been doing well. This is the biggest impact on Tongala since 147 jobs were lost in 2005 when Nestlé announced it would cease manufacturing powdered milk in Australia, converting the Tongala plant into a liquid-only site.

they used to, and cheaper imports have eroded our business further.

“At the same time, the equipment at this factory is old, and the investment we need to make sure it can operate reliably in the future means that the old factory is no longer viable,” Mr McIver said.

Over the next 12 to 18 months, all production at the Tongala factory will progressively move, with the final closure anticipated to occur between late 2020 and mid 2021.

As well as “generous” redundancy packages, eligible employees will be offered extensive support to find alternative work. This will include access to expert outplacement services providing guidance and support on potential next steps.

Nestlé will also work with other local employers, employment agencies, all levels of government and other organisations to explore alternative opportunities.

Following the closure, the Tongala site will be vacated and sold.

Protestors to ‘March Across the Murray’ ON Thursday, September 5, passionate community members from throughout Victoria will descend on Tocumwal to protest against the current Murray-Darling Basin Plan (MDBP) in a Fix the Basin Plan Communities Crisis Rally.

The rally, which starts at 11am on the Tocumwal Foreshore, is in response to the federal government’s refusal to acknowledge the MDBP is a failure, or do anything to fix the results.

After receiving many requests to follow the protest rally with a march, organisers have agreed that it was the best way to get attention to their concerns, with the ‘March Across the Murray’ to take place following the rally.

Organisers of the rally say it was extremely disappointing to learn that the Minister for Water, David Littleproud was visiting the region this week but missed seeing important and peak farming groups.

According to organisers of the rally, the federal government are destroying regional communities, their agricultural industries and future, by refusing to acknowledge the failings of the MDBP. They are now calling on the government to pause, review and revise the plan, and listen to the proposed solutions.

Over 120 native birds found dead near Violet Town AUTHORITIES are currently investigating if the 120+ native birds found dead at a property near Violet Town have been deliberately poisoned.

Officers from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) have executed a search warrant at a property last week following the earlier discovery of deceased wedge-tailed eagles in the area.

During a three-day search, officers have found more than 120 native birds, including 76 Wedge-tailed Eagles, kites, hawks, falcons and other native bird species.

DE LW P ac t i ng reg iona l ma nager, compl ia nce operations, Greg Chant said, “Given the large number of native birds found within the immediate locality, it appears they may have been poisoned.

“Carcasses have been recovered from the property and will be tested to determine the exact cause of death. The

community is justifiably outraged by this incident and our investigations are continuing.

“We are now seeking information from the community to help find the people responsible by contacting CrimeStoppers. Reporting is confidential and we only need your information to help solve this crime,” Mr Chant said.

Mass-bird deaths have occurred frequently throughout Australia recently, with notable instances of suspected poisoning occurring in the Lower Lakes, SA in July 2019 (more than 100 galahs found dead), north Adelaide in July 2019 (over 60 corellas), East Gippsland, VIC in July 2018 (over 140 wedge-tailed eagles), Horsham, VIC in August 2017 (at least 12 corellas), Milang, SA in November 2018 (at least 100 native birds, including galahs, corellas and magpies), Burra, SA in July 2018 (hundreds of galahs) and

Dubbo, NSW in March 2014 (over 700 birds, including hundreds of natives).

Some of these deaths have been linked to a commonly used chemical called imidacloprid, which is used as an insecticide to kill fleas and termites in barley and wheat production. This exact chemical has been banned in Europe, following concerns of its effect on animal and insect populations.

However, the chemical is still allowed for widespread use throughout Australia, with companies also using imidacloprid as seed treatment against Barley yellow dwarf virus, which has been having a detrimental effect on many farms across South Australia and Victoria in recent years.

The search warrants were executed with support from the Victorian Police and Agriculture Victoria.

It’s almost that time of year again when the Shepparton Showgrounds is filled with carnival rides, animals, and fun for the 143rd Annual Shepparton Show!

This year will be just as jam-packed and full of fun as last year, with something for the whole family to come along and enjoy. This year’s highlights will include the Rings of Fire Horse Show Spectacular, which is the only one of its kind in the world. It involves horse and rider jumping through six rings on fire with cannons pushing flames 20 feet into the air, whip-cracking and horsemanship displays.

AKI is very common in hospitals and is present in around five to fifteen percent of hospitalised patients.

To help identify patients with AKI while they are in the hospital, GV Health has developed its own e-alert system, a first for Australia.

As the only health service in the country working with this unique system, a review of the system has revealed a stable and low incidence of AKI in GV Health patients since the introduction of the new alerts system 18 months ago.

The AKI e-alert system was designed by building an algorithm into GV Health’s existing electronic patient management system. Based on a patient’s blood result and the software’s ability to compare previous blood results, AKE e-alerts are sent out to medical and nursing staff, alerting them to ensure they are managed appropriately and in a timely manner.

GV Health executive director clinical operations, Donna Sherringham said, “We are the only health service in Australia carrying out this type of monitoring, which is fantastic for our patients who are benefitting from a system that is the result of the passion of our staff.

“This system has been developed in-house at GV Health, which is an innovative way to monitor and improve health care.”

Regular training regarding the alert is ongoing for all GV Health medical staff, together with the management of patients with AKI.

Drumming up support for environmental care

FARMERS and community members from around the region are being invited to dispose of their old chemical drums at the Colbinabbin Transfer Station next Thursday, September 12, between 9am and 12pm, as part of a special drumMUSTER event.

Campaspe Shire Mayor, Cr Adrian Weston said the drumMUSTER is part of Agsafe’s annual program and provides an easy, environmentally friendly opportunity for farmers to dispose of old chemical drums without harm.

“The program ensures chemical drums are disposed of correctly, avoiding potential contamination in waterways and diverting toxic waste from entering into landfill,” Cr Weston said.

An inspector will view all drums dropped off on the day and any containers that have not been properly cleaned or drained inside and out will not be accepted.

New family violence tool goes live FOLLOWING a successful two-year pilot, officers across Victoria now have access to a new family violence reporting tool to ensure timely and more accurate incident reports can be filled on the field.

The new tool allows police to make better decisions based on the information they collect when they respond to a family violence incident, improving accuracy and ensuring prompt referrals.

Officers can use their mobile phones to make the report, which provides greater guidance for risk assessment and management to protect more victims and hold more perpetrators to account.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Lisa Neville said, “Victoria Police responds to a family violence incident every seven minutes, making it a priority law and order issue.

“We’re giving Victoria Police the tools, resources and equipment they need to keep Victorians safe and address the scourge of family violence.”

The new reporting tool delivers on one of 277 recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Celebrating an awesome group of superheroes continued from front page Kyzaiah touched the hearts of students and teachers at Verney Road during his short journey and six years at the school. Last week, in memory of their classmate, the school dedicated the 2019 Fun Run to Kyzaiah, who absolutely adored the annual event.

The fundraiser, which took place on Wednesday last week, saw students and teachers dressing up as their favourite characters and superheroes to take part in the Fun Run. Teachers, carers, parents and students ran, walked, rolled or sprinted laps around the school to raise awareness and funds for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and, most importantly, to honour the memory of their own little superhero, Kyzaiah.

Funds raised from the special run for Kyzaiah will be split evenly across two important charities. 50 percent of the funds will go towards the Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation, an organisation specifically devoted toward raising funds and awareness for DMD. The other 50 percent will go towards Muscular Dystrophy Australia, the peak national organisation for all muscular dystrophies and neuromuscular disorders.

Kyzaiah’s grandparent and carer, Kaye Goggin said, “The main aim of the event today was to raise awareness for muscular dystrophy.

“When he was first diagnosed at 18 months old, I had never even heard of it.”

Following Kyzaiah’s diagnosis, his family watched on with sadness as his muscle function deteriorated rapidly, leaving him wheelchair-

dependent and requiring daily medication and physiotherapy since eight years of age.

Yet despite these hurdles, Kyzaiah maintained a fearless spirit and was loved by everybody he came in contact with. His cheeky personality touched the hearts of many, like his mates at Rumbalara Football Club and the students and teachers at Verney Road School.

“He was such a character; he had everybody wrapped around his finger,” Ms Goggin said.

“Kyzaiah loved superheroes; it was all he would talk about. Well, besides horror movies. He loved horror and was really looking forward to the new Chucky film.”

Throughout the fundraising event, students at Verney Road had an absolute blast, each attempting to complete as many laps as possible in less than 25 minutes. As the enthusiastic students circled past each time, proud onlookers offered high fives and encouraging words of support, with each student receiving a special stamp for every time they’d complete a lap.

Reflecting on this special event, Verney Road assistant principal, Carolyn West said, “It’s important that the students have a day like today to recognise that, even though Kyzaiah is no longer with us, we can still have lots of fun in his memory.”

And there’s no doubt Kyzaiah would have adored all the superhero fun, laughing with his buddies at Verney Road, everyone all dressed up.

Coincidentally, National Superhero Week for Muscular Dystrophy is occurring this week, from September 2 until September 9. During this time, heroes of all ages are encouraged to host

Asthma season starts now F.A.S.T. heroes save lives BACK in the early 1960s, a struggle to breathe meant adrenalin shots, oxygen tents and lengthy hospital stays. At the time, the respiratory condition we now know as asthma was not officially recognised by the medical profession.

Fast forward 50 years and asthma is a prevalent chronic condition with a plethora of treatment options. With Asthma Week running from September 1-7, Asthma Australia has put together helpful and practical information, so you can breathe easy through spring.

In September, hospitalisations peak again after flu season, with sufferers struggling with a range of symptoms such as itchy/watery eyes, sniffily nose, interrupted sleep, sneezing, blocked nose, snoring and mouth breathing.

Fortunately, there is a lot that people can do to prepare for and manage asthma and hay fever this spring, such as: • The most important approach to preventing spring symptoms is to start using your inhaled asthma preventer machine now. These need to be used

for around two or three weeks, even when you are feeling fine before the season commences so they are effective at preventing symptoms and reducing sensitivity to triggers like pollen.

• Be aware of high-risk pollen days by checking and monitoring relevant websites and apps, such as AusPollen and AirRater. On high pollen days, close your windows and doors and, if you have an air conditioner, make sure it is turned to the ‘circulate’ function.

• Every six to 12 months, visit your doctor to assess your current level of asthma control, check your inhaler technique and ensure your Asthma Action Plan is up-to-date.

ALL Victorians are being encouraged to learn the common signs of a stroke, with National Stroke Week taking place this week, from September 2 to September 8.

Stroke Foundation CEO, Sharon McGowan said stroke strikes the brain, the human control centre.

“Stroke is always a time-critical medical emergency, but people from all walks of life can come to the rescue by recognising the signs of stroke and calling an ambulance,” Ms McGowan said.

B ut ever y day, Victorians are recognised as superheroes, simply by knowing how to recognise a stroke F.A.S.T. and call an ambulance.

Using the F.A.S.T. test involves asking these simple questions: Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?

Arms: Can they lift both arms?

Speech: Is their speech slurred?

Do they understand you?

Time: is critical. If you see

any of these signs, call triple zero (000) straight away.

Eighty percent of strokes will display at least one or more of the F.A.S.T. signs.

Ms McGowan said when stroke strikes, it attacks around 1.9 million brain cells each minute. However, treatments can stop this damage and the more rapidly a stroke can be treated, the better the outcome is likely to be.

“This National Stroke Week, be sure to spread the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke message to your family, friends and colleagues. The next life you save could be your own,” Ms McGowan said.

Ten ways to help prevent a stroke IT’S never too late to strike out against a potentially devastating brain attack.

Like close cousins, heart disease and stroke emerge from a mixture of nature (genes), nurture (environment and upbringing), and personal choice (smoking, exercise, etc.)

For most of us, personal choice largely determines whether a stroke lies ahead. Guidelines on the prevention of stroke suggest that cutting unhealthy personal choices and following a healthy lifestyle can cut the risk of having a stroke by 80 percent.

Though we can’t change certain things such as age, gender, race and genetic predisposition, there are many high-risk factors those prone to stroke can change.

Stroke can be fought on many fronts. A single thrust is good; a multi-

pronged attack is even better. Here are a dozen things you can do to prevent risk: • Know and control blood pressure • No smoking or drugs and drink alcohol in moderation • Lose weight if needed • Exercise more frequently • Identify and manage atrial fibrillation • Treat transient ischemic attacks (TIA) or mini-strokes aggressively • Treat circulatory problems like peripheral artery disease, sickle cell disease, or severe anaemia • Know and control your blood sugar and cholesterol • Adopt a healthy diet low in sodium and rich in potassium • Know the F.A.S.T. warning signs of stroke The Adviser. The giraffe are everywhere and are so graceful as they move along.

Flamingos gather at Walvis Bay; the drought inland has driven more birds to the water of the bay this year.

We are on our way to Etosha National Park but first, we travel over a huge mountain range and down to the sea.

This seaport was once home to the German Navy back in World War One and the navy has gone but the Germans have stayed. German is freely spoken and many of the towns have German names; I have even seen a street named Bismarck.

At Walvis Bay, it’s now home to tourism and many cruise ships visit this fishing port providing visitors with sports fishing, boating and whale watching, to name a few.

The weather is quite a bit cooler by the sea and at this time of year, hundreds of Flamingos have made the lagoon their home. Many of the bright pink birds have flown in from the Etosha National Park, as the drought has taken its toll.

It’s now time to leave the Atlantic coastline. We take the Trans Kalahari Highway and head inland to warmer climes in our search for African fauna.

We have arrived at our safari lodge for the night, situated just outside the Etosha National Park. The Toshari Lodge is situated on an outcrop of dolomite rocks and overlooks a forest of Mopane and white Seringa trees.

Each individual chalet has all you need and set amongst the trees gives a relaxed feel and the lodge itself has only recently been rebuilt after a fire destroyed the original. There is some wildlife in the surrounds, including a very large warthog with very large tusks, he likes to visit you but l am not sure the feeling is mutual.

Today we have entered the Etosha National Park. People come from all over the world to see the wild animals and you have to pre-pay the entrance fees. Etosha is said to be the Namibian government’s biggest source of foreign currency.

We are on safari and so far today we have seen elephants, giraffes, zebra, rhino, springbok, oryx, élan, warthogs, wildebeest and many birds. But towards the end of the day, a magic moment occurred as we crept up on a water hole: zebra were approaching and l was up above them as they began to drink the still water to take in their reflections. The photo is at the top of this page.

We are now leaving Etosha National Park; it’s been a great experience, but time to move forward and head to the Okavango River.

Along the way, we stop at Rundu and the Mbunza Living Museum. It’s a traditional cultural school set up by the local Kavango people. They show us their traditional way of life and entertain us with traditional songs and dances, they are very enthusiastic about their performance

and everyone joins in the magic of the moment.

Tonight we are staying at the Kaisosi River Lodge on the banks of the Okavango River. Our chalet overlooks the river, it’s beautiful weather and we can see children playing on the riverbank. The river is the border between Namibia and Angola, we are on the top story of our chalet and the view across the river is quite stunning; the next morning the sunrise is breathtaking.

We are on the road again travelling to our next lodge. On the way, we stop at a local market; they sell everything from handcrafted goods, to clothing. In the centre of the market is a stall packed to the ceiling with old electrical appliances: TVs, radios, and boom boxes, all in pieces. A man in the centre of all this has a soldering iron in his hand and is working on circuit boards; hopefully, at the end of the day, something will work again.

Back on the road, we travel past little huts like a shanty town but its more structured than you think; our guide explains that each large unit of huts is a village with a headman and many villages then come under the control of a chief. A code of living overlooked by the chief covers everything, from how men and women relate to each other, to the family hierarchy. There is also a code of dress: married women wear a beanie and if another male messes with what’s under the beanie, there is a fine of one cow. When it comes time for children to go to school the family pays one cow, which covers all the family’s children for their entire schooling years; so cows are quite prized, and a rich man has many.

It’s a subsistence farming system but if the rains are good and the cattle fatten then all is well. But at the moment the drought is taking its toll and many of the shacks are made of tin with dirt floors, the temperature inside in the summer can be stifling and overnight, freezing; but its cheap construction and covers basic needs.

Irrigation has come to this part of Namibia with small farmers using the waters of the Okavango River. But because it is so successful, the big boys are trying to move in on the little guys and set up massive irrigation farms. Angola and Botswana have protested, saying the amount of water taken would kill the river downstream, even affecting the Okavango Delta (sound familiar?). The government has limited the size of pumps, but where there’s a will...

ENCOURAGING FOR THE CBD Dear Editor, I was so pleased and relieved to see on your front page on your August 21 edition that Dimmeys has been saved from closure. Full marks to the landlord for reducing the rent. As stated in the article, there is an increase in online shopping and fewer people visiting the CBD. I believe it’s time now for the Greater Shepparton City Council to do something about the parking fees so that people can be encouraged to spend more time in the CBD. Perhaps property owners could consider lowering the rates for businesses, so that we could have a much more vibrant city centre.

EMBRACE CLIMATE EMERGENCY Dear Editor, For most of us, the last ten years went by in a flash and the next ten years will do the same.

However, in the next ten years, if we do not act and just sit on our hands, global warming will have changed our world completely- and it will be irreversible.

We are confronted with a climate emergency/crisis the consequences of which will be horrific if we do not work together and collectively confront the challenges that are upon us now.

We have got to elevate global warming and climate change to the top of our agendas, it must be at the forefront of our thinking in every forum, meeting, gathering, team meeting- it must permeate our lives. Together with dedicated and committed leadership at all levels, that fosters collective actions we can combat global warming if we vigorously embrace the crisis. We have proven in the past that we can overcome insurmountable threats by being totally committed to meeting and beating the treats presented.

Rather than shying away from the threat we should take every opportunity to discuss what can be done - then ideas will flow and truly effective actions will follow.

Hopefully in ten years’ time we will have no regrets. It’s up to us.

SHEPPA R TON’S SO-CA L L ED ‘SUPER SCHOOL’ Dear Editor, To all the people who care about the future education options for secondary students in the Goulburn Valley state school system, please get behind the parents who are up against a ‘huge wall of rejection’ that has been placed there by representatives from the Victorian E du c a t i o n D e p a r t m e n t a n d S t a t e Government, with no avenue for appeal against this Super School they know is not going to be suitable for their children and a city such as Shepparton.

My biggest worry is that if this ‘out of date’ idea that has been shown to not be working in other areas goes ahead, excellent school sites such as Wanganui Park Secondary College, McGuire College and Mooroopna Secondary College will be lost to the Goulburn Valley for good.

Helen Sleep and Cherril Colleen Jones have both written excellently researched articles to prove that huge student numbers do not eventuate into improved outcomes and that previous trials have all reverted back to smaller schools.

Shepparton has made some big mistakes in the past, such as the dismantling of the old Shepparton Post Office (a beautiful building replaced by a box!) The promise then was that it would be rebuilt at the then International Village, which never happened. The International Village is also lost now, too. Please don’t let this same type of mistake happen to our wonderful city by hollow promises of a better outcome for our students, when the complete opposite is the case and we could lose these school sites forever for our students.

People with no students involved are also concerned at the traffic hold up caused by busses and cars twice per day with no room to keep up a constant flow of traffic.

Everyone in Shepparton knows this site has no room for expansion and can only go up with no recreational grounds and fresh air for student breaks.

The solution is, keep the Shepparton High School for Year 11 and 12 students so that the numbers will be there for all students to choose the subjects they need, then keep the other three schools for Year 7 to 10 students.

I have heard people say that they would move away from Shepparton if the Super School goes ahead as they have no where else to send their children.

Do we want this for Shepparton?

TATURA SENIOR CITIZENS Our Father’s Day raffle had 17 prizes and 17 winners, congratulations to all. PUNTERS celebrated the wonderful weather on the weekend with a bunch of great games of GVL finals footy.

First cab off the ranks on Saturday afternoon was the Kyabram and Echuca Qualifying Final at Moon Oval. The top two teams battled out in a fierce match that had many Kyabram fans holding their breath for the first time in a long time.

The Echuca boys were bold and brave in their challenge, holding the lead by a point during the first term break, only to lose traction and score no goals in the second. The final results saw Kyabram up by only three goals.

Later that night under lights, Shepparton faced down Tatura in the Elimination Final at the Mooroopna Main Oval. The Bulldogs

were leading the way at half time but slipped in the second, with the Bears taking home the victory by a mere 14 points.

The last game for the first weekend of GVL finals took place on Sunday at Kyabram Recreation Reserve. The Elimination Final between Rochester and Seymour was, again, extremely closely contended, with barely two or three goals between the teams throughout the entire game. Rochester came out strong in the finish to take home the victory by just 12 points, impressive for a team that started the 2019 season with four losses.

Next week the GVL semi-finals will see Kyabram take on Shepparton in Euroa on Saturday and Echuca against traditional rivals Rochester at the Benalla Showgrounds.

Huge upgrade for local bowls club EXCI T I NG times are ahead for the members out at the East Shepparton Bowls Club, as a huge pavilion and new green is being constructed to allow for bowling in all types of weather.

The project has been in the works for the last 18 months, with building commencing on July 1 and set to be completed by the end of this year. The $1.7 million (approx.) project has been partially funded by the federal government and local council, but the club is still seeking more funds to cover the rest of the costs.

The 120 club members have put their

heads and hands together to organise fundraisers in order to cover the remaining costs of the upgrade and help out when they can with the works around the club.

Starting on Wednesday, September 25, the East Shepparton Bowls Club will host a fashion parade from 1:30pm with afternoon tea provided and tickets just $10.

There will also be a dance on Saturday, October 5 featuring No Big Deal and guest artist, Jimmy Johnson with supper provided and drinks at bar prices. Tickets are available for $18 a head. To book tickets call Josie on 0411 858 433.

Big walk to help those affected by kidney disease CURRENTLY, there are about five million Australians at risk of developing end-stage kidney disease. According to Kidney Health Australia, there are 1.7 million Australians affected by the disease and about 1.5 million of those are unaware they’re living with the disease.

To help raise awareness and funds around this silent disease, the Shepparton community are being urged to take place in the Big Red Kidney Community Walk, held this Sunday, September 8 from 10:30am at Victoria Park Lake, Shepparton.

The Big Red Kidney Walk is Kidney Health Australia’s annual event to bring the community together and raise awareness and funds to fight kidney disease and show support for loved ones who are bravely fighting with the debilitating impacts of the disease.

Kidney Health Australia CEO, Chris Forbes said, “The shocking fact about kidney disease is that a person can lose up to 90 percent of their kidney function before any symptoms are apparent.

“A person could be relatively fine one day and the next

they could be in hospital facing a life sentence of continuous dialysis or on a transplant list, waiting for a suitable donor.”

Mr Forbes said that the annual fundraising walks help fund vital early detection work, research and support facilities.

“We urge everyone to get down to the walk, dressed in red and ready to enjoy a day of fun, entertainment and exercise, all to help fight kidney disease.”

A generous donation for local tennis club AS a long-term supporter of tennis in Australia, Shepparton’s ANZ bank was pleased to be able to give the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club a cheque of $13,650 on Monday, September 2.

Through the ANZ’s Community Spotter Program, a customer was able to have a percentage of his business loan given to the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club, who he supports as a committed member. The Community Spotter Program allows local community clubs and groups to register, and then a customer applying for a business loan can nominate that club and then a

percentage of their loan goes into the club.

The Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club treasurer, Mick Bastian said, “We’re so grateful for this donation. We’ve recently spent a lot of money fixing up the fencing and resurfacing the hard courts, so this money will be a huge help.”

ANZ also provides grants of $10,000 to 20 tennis clubs or venues around the country through the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots community grants program.
