Designs released for Shepparton’s new secondary school

LAST week, detailed designs were released for Shepparton’s hotly discussed new high school, Greater Shepparton College (interim name).

Protestors demand an immediate pause of the MDBP PASSIONATE farmers and community members participated in one of the largest political rallies the region has ever seen last week, gathering in Tocumwal and calling for an immediate pause of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan (MDBP).

Over 3000 were in attendance, demanding politicians listen to the irrigators in Australia’s largest food bowl regarding the failings of the MDBP, which has stripped 25 percent of the water from their communities.

Enormous celebration of sport ATHLETES from across Victoria arrived in Mooroopna on Friday last week to take part in the All Abilities Football and Netball Carnival, the largest football and netball event in Victoria for persons with a disability.

Now in its sixth year, more than 200 participants contested in the carnival, with some travelling from as far as Horsham to take part in all of the fun and social opportunities afforded by a couple of friendly games of football and netball.

Players of all ages participated in the action-packed day, which celebrated inclusion and diversity in sport.

The local team, Goulburn Valley Stars showed off their talents during the carnival day, with players participating in both sports, having loads of fun, and performing well on the field.

The All Abilities Football and Netball Carnival was organised by Valley Sport, in association with AFL Goulburn Murray and Netball Victoria.

Native birds swoop into spring as breeding season begins THERE are two motions that seem to be endemic to Australians, the great Aussie salute, that can involve brushing away flies and waving a stick over your head to ward off swooping magpies.

Spring is the season when magpies get particularly aggressive in an effort to protect their new nests, or it may be something to do with football, and that sudden whoosh above your head has people running for cover.

Bird swooping is a part of life in Australia as we share our environment with nature. Acting program manager with the Department of Land, Water and Planning, Andrew Dean said, “It is illegal to harm native birds and offences can result in fines or imprisonment. It is up to us to co-exist peacefully with wildlife and respect it.

“If you do end up in an area where there is a swooping bird, try to protect your head and eyes and move quickly through the

area.”

Look out for your mates OUR farmers are doing it tough. With the ongoing drought and rising price of water, many throughout the region are suffering, not just financially, but emotionally, as well.

Look Over the Farm Gate is a call to action for rural communities to look out for one another and promote social inclusion. The initiative was developed in 2015 in response to the drought in northwest Victoria and extended in 2016 to areas affected by the dairy crisis.

The aim of Look Over the Farm Gate is to increase mental health awareness, support rural communities in building resilience and encouraging local action to keep an eye out on each other.

Farmers, community groups and local government facing drought throughout the region are being encouraged to apply for grants of up to $1,500 to run social events and community initiatives that bring together neighbours and the community to relax and spend the night off the farm with some friends.

Think creatively, because only you know what your community needs. It could be anything from a barbecue and comedy night, regular fitness meet-ups in the park, or a family movie night.

Trust the signs

By Steve Hutcheson THURSDAY the 12th September is R U OK? Day, a national day of action in suicide prevention. As a father, it has a special impact with me having to acknowledge that this month also marks four years since my eldest son succumbed to the pressures of life.

Research commissioned by R U OK? found that nearly two thirds of Australians are not confident they can recognise the signs that someone may be struggling with life and almost half hadn’t asked someone if they were ok because they weren’t sure of the signs.

In my case, I was working overseas at the time.

I explained to my own father later that phone conversations with my son at the time were like walking on eggshells, the smallest word out of place was enough to create a mood swing and yet, we were also planning a future together on our new farm for when I returned to Australia.

R U OK? CEO, Katherine Newton says, “Signs can be subtle changes in verbal or non-verbal behaviour.

You might spot a loved one is having unusual mood swings, changes in sleep, or a mate might be withdrawing from social situations, like not turning up to sport training.

“We’re encouraging people to look out for those cues. We should also make a conscious effort to reach out to someone going through a significant life change such as job loss, relationship breakdown, study pressure or perhaps becoming a parent.”

If in doubt, people should trust their gut feeling.

Take action and learn the signs beforehand and understand the four steps to take: ask R U OK? and listen, encourage action and continue to check in.

Funds for fixing up our schools THE 33 state schools across Greater Shepparton are set to receive a portion of the state government’s investment of $515 million for school maintenance across Victoria.

Member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp MP announced that a total of $2.5 million would be allocated in additional funding for the schools in Greater Shepparton.

“T his funding will help schools across Greater Shepparton to undertake essential maintenance - from a new lick of paint, to replacing carpets and landscaping work – so that students, teachers and parents alike can take pride in our schools,” Mr Gepp said.

schools are safe, modern and properly maintained and the new announcement builds on the major funding allocation of $5.6 billion across the state for new schools and upgrades.

Schools situated in bushfire prone areas across the state will also have access to additional funds to ensure they are bushfire ready, thanks to $44.2 million allocated to fire preparedness activities, such as vegetation removal.

Nominate your town for a drought assistance grant Towns across Australia have been severely impacted by the ongoing drought conditions that have had a dramatic effect on the continuing sustainability of rural communities.

Ten country towns affected by drought have the chance to receive a minimum of $100,000 each over a five-year period through Rural Aid’s ongoing Sustainable Community program.

Rural Aid is a non-profit organisation established in 2015 initially to buy hay for struggling farmers affected by the drought.

CEO of Rural Aid, Charles Alder said, “Our community program lifts morale and injects much needed capital into the local community.”

In conjunction with the grants, up to 100 Rural Aid volunteers will spend a week in the town undertaking a range of infrastructure projects which have been identified by the town leaders as important for the community.

Hundreds of new jobs available in Benalla In what must be a massive injection towards community optimism, LS Concrete is adding 300 new jobs to their precast plant in Benalla.

In order to attract the new workers, the company is planning a number of recruitment roadshows across the region.

According to the latest statistics, these new jobs will add around 10 percent to the total number of employed people in the town.

According to Greater Shepparton City Council manager works and waste, Janelle Bunfield, contamination rates of green organic waste have stayed well under the targets of 3 percent for contamination over the past four months.

“Thank you to all the residents for their efforts, which has resulted in the steady improvement or reduction i n c o nt a m i n at io n r at e s i n t h e municipality. To see such consistent results throughout the entire year shows us Greater Shepparton residents are thinking carefully about which bin they are using for their waste,” Mrs Bunfield said.

“Putting organic waste in the green lid bin has many benefits, primarily protecting ou r environ ment and diverting waste from landfill which has long term benefits for us all.

“It is important residents remember the green lid bin is for organic waste only, such as lawn clippings and food scraps, however, we often see items like hard and soft plastic placed in the bin.

It is important to remember that one contaminated bin can affect an entire truckload of green organics.”

More than 700 tonnes of food and garden waste was composted last month, which will ultimately go back to the earth.

Proud trainer recognised

WITH both her parents, step-parents and grandparents paving the way, it was clear Jodi Rechsteiner was destined to be a great trainer.

It wasn’t until her mid-thirties, university and trade-qualified, that Jodi realised teaching might be a sensible career choice – allowing her to combine her skills as a qualified chef with her enjoyment of science.

In 2009, Jodi joined GOTAFE, teaching hospitality and VCAL and since that time she has developed into an outstanding teacher who brings real industry insight into the classroom.

To recognise her contributions, Jodi has been awarded Victorian Trainer of the Year at the 65th Annual Victorian Training Awards.

The awards are hosted annually by the Department of Education and Training and recognise the achievements of participants in the TAFE and training sector.

In accepting her award, Jodi paid tribute to her GOTAFE team and her students. “I am part of a fantastic team at GOTAFE. Our trainers have all worked in industry and bring that passion to their classrooms.

At GOTA F E , our students gain an understanding of the real skills required for work from their trainers and teachers,” Jodi said.

Jodi will now be in the running for the national awards, which will be held in Brisbane on November 21.

Opportunity to strengthen community PASSIONATE community members and residents from the Moira Shire are being encouraged to get creative in coming up with ways to strengthen their community, with the recent announcement of the Community Strengthening Grants Program.

There are major grants available for projects up to $10,000 and minor grants for projects up to $5,000 on offer.

These grants aim to provide funding for art and culture projects, community events, equipment, health promotion, environmental sustainability, tourism and infrastructure.

Moira Shire Mayor, Cr Libro Mustica said the Community Strengthening Grants Program was a great way to kick-start a community initiative.

“Community grants are a vital function of Moira Shire

Council,” Cr Mustica said. “They help facilitate projects which enrich the whole community and can assist in the development of service, management of facilities, coordination of events and promotion of tourism, environmental sustainability and health in the community.”

Art and culture projects or events could include holding skills development workshops, hosting music events or art exhibitions, or workshops with community public art outcomes.

Health promotion ideas include projects supporting active and healthy lifestyles or opportunities to educate the community about mental health or drug and alcohol issues.

Previous examples of equipment and infrastructure projects, which have been successfully funded through the

Frustrated farmers march across the Murray AT the beginning of the rally, documentary filmmaker Topher Field called for a minute’s silence to honour those farmers and others who had taken their lives in the battle to survive the loss of water from the community.

Following the emotional rally opening, speakers shared turns telling their stories and demanding change from the politicians.

Blighty dairy farmer, Lachlan Marshall said, “We’ve all bled, sweated and worked our fingers to the bone to build what we’ve built on our farms and homes, and it’s the same for the generation before us and the generation before them. And there are kids here today who will hopefully follow us on.

“But we seem to have hit a real roadblock along the way and that is, unfortunately, are the most powerful people in our country: the Prime Minister, the Environmental Minister and the Minister for Water.

“We have here, an environmental disgrace, right in our environmental minister’s backyard. We have river degradation, environmental catastrophe and human carnage.”

Barooga irrigator Chris Brooks then followed, updating the crowd on the huge $750 million class-action he and other irrigators are taking against the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) for ‘gross negligence’ in wasting 850,000 megalitres of water last season.

“In the last twelve months, we have done a lot of work identifying cracks in the MDBA and we are producing facts to take to the politicians in Canberra,” Mr Brooks said.

“We’ve spent a fortune on legal fees and are looking at the best option to take these so-and-sos to task because it was a waste of time lobbying politicians on our behalf because they didn’t have the guts to stand up. The legal breaches we looked at were constitutional, they were federal and the easiest one of all was to take it to common law and charge them with gross negligence for

the way they have managed our valuable resource.”

One of the organisers of the rally, Jan Beer noted a few glaring absences from the rally, particularly the Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum, the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Sussan Ley and the Federal Water Minister, David Littleproud.

Ms Beer said that many communities were being destroyed by Minister David Littleproud’s decision.

“There is all this water in the river and the mismanagement of it

by Federal Government and the MDBA is so horrific that we want to get rid of this minister and we want someone who will come and listen to us,” Ms Beer said.

One of the few politicians in attendance that addressed the crowd on the day was Shepparton Independent MP, Suzanna Sheed, who said that any change has only come after the huge efforts by so many people here today.

“We’ve seen the human and economic cost that has been caused along the way. Here at the southern basin, we seem to get ignored by bureaucrats and politicians who are intent on delivering the plan in full and on time,” Ms Sheed said.

“The loss to the dairy industry in our region cannot be calculated. We now have only 1000 dairy farmers in the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District, 20 years ago we had 3000, with cow and milk production down approximately 40 percent each. The dairy industry is fighting to stay afloat in the face of terrible government policies that are hollowing out our communities all the time.”

Following on from the speeches, the crowd marched from the Tocumwal foreshore to the bridge crossing the Murray River.

Along the way, traffic was stopped in every direction, as the crowd passionately chanted “no water, no food!”

“We’ve decided that David Littleproud is full of ‘you know what’, and he is doing nothing about the Basin Plan,” Ms Beer said.

“When we got to the middle of the bridge, we chucked him overboard. We’ve got a tracker on him and we’ll see if he actually makes it out of the Murray River’s mouth.”

Earlier that week, Mr Littleproud visited the southern basin with interim inspector-general for the basin, Mick Keetly.

In a statement, Mr Littleproud said that if the MDBP was stopped there would be no more water in any of the dams and the government would be forced to ‘go around and buy back water.’

“I respect the protesters; they are passionate and they are doing it tough and I don’t ever forget that,” Mr Littleproud said.

“When farmers are on zero water allocations, so are allocations for the environment. If we are respectful, kind and constructive with each other, we can solve most problems of this country. It’s important the impacts of drought aren’t confused for the outcomes of the Basin Plan.”

Designs released for Shepparton’s new secondary school

continued from front page The designs for the new school combine the advantages available to a bigger school, whilst maintaining the feel of a small school environment. This is achieved by establishing three ‘neighbourhood’ building made up of three small houses with about 50 students in each year level, each with its own library and wellbeing space to make the students feel at home.

A typical day for Year 7 and 8 students in the ‘neighbourhood’ would see them starting the day in their house and then all classes attended for that day will also take place in their dedicated house, to create a sense of belonging. The students will learn and attend classes in the upper levels of their house building. Senior students will also start their day in their dedicated house, but also attend specialist classes throughout their neighbourhood with students from other houses.

T he ne w de sig n a l so fe at u re s a specialised learning precinct called the Enterprise and Innovation Centre. As the flagship building of the new college, this new centre will provide a central heart for the school and a place to welcome the broader community. Featuring arts, science, food technology and technology spaces, the Enterprise and Innovation Centre is only one of two new learning areas at the school.

The other new learning area will be the gymnasium, with dedicated spaces for physical education, sport, health, fitness and movement. a fitness and weights room, flexible spaces for dance and yoga, two multi-purpose classrooms, bathrooms, change rooms, a kitchenette and first aid facilities.

There will also be a central wellbeing hub for students to access support services by health and wellbeing staff. The hub is located in the heritage building, which will remain at the new school site.

Enthusiastic students admired the designs when they were revealed last week, while an even more enthusiastic Education Minister proudly spoke of the new school, which he said was the most important project in the entire state.

“The new school has been designed from the ground up to best suit the needs of every future Shepparton student, and I’m proud to mark this important milestone with the community,” Mr Merlino said.

During the design reveal, Mr Merlino also announced three potential names for the school, which he is inviting the community to vote on. The three suggested names for the new school are Goulburn Valley High School, Greater Shepparton High School and Greater Shepparton College.

Hundreds of Australians develop dementia daily DEMENTIA is a general term to describe a collection of symptoms that are caused by disorders affecting the brain; it is not one specific disease.

Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks.

Brain function is affected in such a way that it interferes with the person’s normal social or working life.

Dementia is a broad term used to describe a loss of memory, intellect, rationality, social skills and physical functioning. There are many types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and Lewy body disease.

Most people with dementia are older,

but it is important to remember that not all older people get dementia and it can happen to anybody, though it is more common after the age of 65 years.

According to the latest data from Dementia Australia, more than 425,000 people in the country live with it and an estimated 250 Australians develop dementia every day.

Dementia is the second leading cause of death of Australians and is the leading cause of death in Australian women.

Dementia is the single greatest cause of disabilities in older Australians (aged 65 years or older) and the third leading cause of disability burden overall.

Know the early warning signs MEMORY loss that disrupts daily life may be a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

Almost 40 percent of people over the age of 65 experience some form of memory loss and while there is no underlying medical condition causing this memory loss, it is a normal part of the aging process known as “age-associated memory impairment.”

Despite this, there is cer tainly a dif ference bet ween age-associated memory impairment and different forms of dementia, with the later involving more extreme memory impairment that will involve forgetting huge swathes of recent information.

Here are ten warning signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. If you notice any of them, don’t ignore them and schedule an appointment with your doctor.

MEMORY LOSS THAT DISRUPTS DAILY LIFE Forgetting recently learned information is one of the most common signs. This can include forgetting important dates or events, asking the same questions over and over, and/or increasingly needing to rely on memory aids or family members for things typically handled individually.

CHALLENGES IN PLANNING OR PROBLEM SOLVING Some people living with dementia may experience changes in their ability to develop a plan, work with numbers, remember a familiar recipe or keep track of monthly bills.

DIFFICULTY COMPLETING FAMILIAR TASKS Simple daily tasks, such as driving to a familiar location, organising a grocery list, or remembering the rules to a favourite game are extremely difficult.

CONFUSION WITH TIME OR PLACE People living with dementia can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time and will often have trouble understanding something if it is not happening immediately.

NEW PROBLEMS WITH WORDS People living with dementia may have trouble following or joining a conversation or they may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue. They may also struggle with vocabulary or have trouble naming a familiar object or use the wrong name.

DECREASED OR POOR JUDGEMENT Individuals living with dementia may experience changes in judgement or decision-making.

WITHDRAWAL FROM WORK OR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES A person living with dementia may experience changes in their ability to hold or follow a conversation and as a result, he or she may withdraw from hobbies, social activities or other engagements.

CHANGES IN MOOD AND PERSONALITY Individuals living with dementia may experience mood or personality changes.

They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious and may become easily upset at home, with friends, or when outside of their comfort zone.

The art of the Go Kart THE weather in Numurkah remained spectacular over the weekend, blessing those participating in the 30th Australasian Go Kart Titles Red Plate Event.

Around 160 entrants and 600 spectators from across Australia descended on the Numurkah circuit, each vying for the hotly prized red numberplates awarded to winners.

“Everybody wants to win the Australasian titles because it looks good on your resume,” Goulburn Valley Kart Club secretary, Ben Healy explained. “You also win a red numberplate and for the next 12 months, you wear that trophy on your kart. When you race over the next year, other racers will notice that you’re the champ and they’ll try to knock you out.”

The Goulburn Valley Kart Club is the oldest go kart club in Australia, proudly celebrating 60 years since its inception, alongside the massive 30th anniversary of the Australasian titles.

“Because we are the oldest club in Australia, the turnout for the weekend was spectacular and the atmosphere was fantastic. Many people commented, saying that it was the best-run event of the year and they love coming here and love seeing what we’re doing as a club,” Mr Healy said.

“For a little town like Numurkah, that’s a great result.”

Mr Healy said that, unlike other clubs, the Goulburn Valley Kart Club celebrates its newest members, putting them front-and-centre, as opposed to the token club superstar. As a result, the club has experienced unprecedented growth, expanding its member base from about six or seven people in the early 2010s to well over 80 members, making it the fifth-biggest go karting club in Victoria.

“Thanks to the support of our great members, we have been able to afford to re-do one of the corners at our track, which cost about $80,000,” Mr Healy said.

Winners from the weekend’s Australasian Go Kart titles each took home a share of the $15,000 cash prize pool, but the real prize for the day, as Mr Healy said, was the coveted red numberplate to be proudly displayed on winning-karts for the remainder of 2019.

We did not expect a crowd of 3000 and had not allowed for this in our pre-planning. Your quick thinking and ability to read the situation allowed those in attendance to get their message across in a safe and controlled manner.

Secondly, to the media who took the time to cover the rally and report on our issues, thank you.

SEPTEMBER in Australia means football finals time during the first month of spring. The weather warms up and you can smell the fresh grass clippings.

The final six system in the GVL has long been a system that has caused much discussion and debate. It is quite unique in that all other leagues that use a top six have the first and second sides having the first week off. This makes sure the first and second best sides over the home and away season face off in the second semi final, with the winner advancing to the grand final.

Over the years that the GVL have used this top six system, the team in 6th has only gone past the first semi final on one occasion, which was Seymour in 2012 when they had a number of VFL players that had qualified for the finals. If they win the first week, 6th plays the loser of the 1st versus 2nd game in the semi final.

This year, Kyabram have been the clear ladder leader with an

undefeated season and Echuca clearly the second best side in the competition. 2019 is a good example of why first should be playing second in the second semi final, as they are the heavyweights.

There was a 10-year period in the GVL that the 3rd placed side after the home and away season was the eventual premier. Many say that this was due to the softer entry to the second semi final after first and second had slogged it out in the qualifying final.

One thing for sure in 2019 is that the best three sides in the competition are the remaining sides left to chase the premiership dream. It certainly looks like Kyabram’s to lose but twice in the last five years we have had a side go into the grand final undefeated only to fall down at the last hurdle.

Echuca and Shepparton face off this week with the chance to repeat that feat.

I REMEMBER when I was finally old enough to take on the weekly chore of mowing the lawns at our family property. Our garden of several acres had so much grass, often intricately shaped; even with the ride-on mower, the whole thing took about two hours.

In the years leading up to obtaining my licence, I proudly cruised laps of the house on the weekend, listening to music and earning a couple of bucks pocket money by simply sitting atop the mower and slashing the turf with the whirring blades below. So long as I didn’t destroy any shrubs, I was good.

The mower seldom moved faster than walking pace, but I still acted like I was a rally car driver.

Members of the Australian Ride On Lawn Mower Racing Association drive their fantastic, souped-up grass cutters at a pace that would be surely deemed unsafe for cautious lawn cutting. But they’re not cutting lawns on these mowers; they’re racing them.

Last weekend, a huge crowd gathered in Mooroopna at the Shepparton District Car Club’s track to support Joel’s Charity Race. Those in attendance were there to witness a bunch of exciting races featuring super modified lawn mower races, raise some funds for a great cause, and enjoy the awesome atmosphere.

There were four different competitions raced on the day and four winners. Jhett McIntrye took home the win for

the juniors (limited to 110cc motors), Amber Eliott topped the C-class (capped at 200cc), Tracey Peters won B-class (250cc) and Stuart Eliott raced to victory in the A-class (450cc).

The charity race event raised $2,500 for the Royal Children’s Hospital in support of a mower racing family, whose son Joel has been battling a serious illness.

Great turnout for the Big Red Kidney Walk RED goes faster, but speed wasn’t on the agenda for the walkers who circled Victoria Park Lake on Sunday, dressed in red and ready to raise funds for Kidney Health Australia.

The Big Red Kidney Walk is a fun national day where the community gathers to participate in events all across the country to raise vital awareness of kidney disease and funds to improve the quality of care for those already living with the disease.

At the time of writing, 901 fundraisers from across Australia have raised almost $326,445 for Kidney Health Australia. The charity helps provide services for kidney donors and patients, including providing support housing after transplants and dialysis.

On Sunday’s event at Victoria Park Lake, just over 100 participants took part in the walk, where they were treated to a delicious warm breakfast and the opportunity to purchase donated goodies, with all funds going to Kidney Health Australia.

Shooting at targets has been an event since guns were first invented but in this era, shooting has become a much more technical sport. The Shepparton Smallbore and Air Rifle Club held its annual prize meeting in the last weekend of August, showc asi ng t he te ch n ic a l sk i l ls of shooters and drawing entrants from places as far as West Wyalong, Canberra, M ildura, Traralgon and L eongatha.

The targets in this case are recorded as the projectile passes through a series of ele c t ron ic sensors to deter m i ne t he ex ac t p o sit ion on t he t a r ge t .

O n t h e s e c o n d d ay o f s h o o t i n g , competitors in the air rifle competitions saw Melbourne shooter Michael Davis achieve a state record with a score of 595 out of 600, with local shooter, Cain Easton coming in second place with a score of 591.

S cores were agg regated and g raded on handicap, giving 12-year-old Darcie George the opportunity to take out the first place cash prize of $150.
