Cats coughing up a furball

By Steve Hutcheson IT is pretty tough going when a bye is your best performance in a whole year of football. But like their namesake, the Ardmona Cats never say die; they just get up, brush off the dust and mud and get on with their next life as a 100-year-old football club.

But, as bad luck would have it, they might well be on their last life. The Kyabram District Football League have lost patience and suspended the club from the next season for not paying their dues.

Finding homes for beautiful animals EVERY year, hundreds of thousands of perfectly healthy cats and dogs are taken to pounds and shelters in Australia. Unfortunately, due to overbreeding, illegal breeding, a lack of public education and regulatory policies, too many of these animals need to be put down.

These are beautiful, healthy, intelligent and loving creatures that are being euthanased daily due to people’s laziness and attitude

toward animals.

Here in the Goulburn Valley, a not-for-profit organisation has emerged to help reduce the number of homeless animals in the area.

Goulburn Valley Pet Adoption and Rehoming are a small team of six dedicated volunteers who are animal lovers with a passion to create a positive change toward pet ownership.

Tatura Hot Bread won ‘Australia’s official greatest sausage roll 2019’ which they are very excited about. They also took home the gold for their gourmet sausage roll, chicken cranberry and brie pie, Tuscan chicken pie, chunky steak and caramelised onion pie, and their chunky pepper pie. The

bakery was also awarded silver for their plain pie and chunky steak pie.

Tatura Hot Bread owners, Glenda and Jeff Alexander said they were absolutely ecstatic for winning such a huge, Australiawide competition.

Students strike demanding climate action CONCERNED students from across the region who believe Australia is not doing enough to combat climate change will rally in Maude Street Mall on Friday as part of the SchoolStrike4Climate.

The rally is part of a wider global climate strike on September 20, three days ahead of the UN Emergency Climate Summit in New York. Students will be striking from school to send a message to politicians to take their future seriously and treat climate change as a global crisis.

As part of the strike, students will be making three climatespecific demands: no new coal, oil and gas projects (including the Adani mine), 100 percent renewable energy generation and exports by 2030 and funding for a just transition and job creation for all fossil-fuel workers and their communities.

Plans are currently in place for students from Shepparton and the surrounding areas to rally in the Maude Street Mall on Friday, from 11am. Shepparton Police and Greater Shepparton City Council have been notified of the rally.

SETTING up a stand at the Shepparton Marketplace has had a great outcome for the Caroline Chisholm Society’s Goulburn Valley Pregnancy and Family Support Services, according to lead practitioner, Maree Chin.

The volunteers were able to raise more than $1100 in cash and goods donated along with a

$3000 donation from Dexus, the management team at Shepparton Marketplace.

“We have benefited enormously from the event,” said Maree. “A big thank you to Lyndal Ford from Dexus, Greater Shepparton Foundation and Bec from Big W for a wonderful campaign.

“The public support has been amazing and we are continuing to receive goodwill through people dropping off donations.

“More locals know we are here in Shepparton and the donation from Dexus and the wider community means we can purchase an iPad mini so that volunteers can do safety checks on the items we send out to families.”

Maree also added special thanks to the volunteers. “Pat Coffey is one of our longest serving volunteers and was one of our founding members of Goulburn Valley Pregnancy and Family Support Services in 1975,” she said.

This year the Caroline Chisholm Society is celebrating 50 years caring for families in the community.

All that is white is not milk AS if dairy farmers do not have enough to contend with, such as drought, high water and feed costs, and processors shutting down. Now to have a range of products competing for the same market space calling itself milk while not actually being milk just adds to the burden they have to shoulder.

This past week has seen the industry move to reclaim the labelling of products to be what they are and not what they would like to be, to the advantage of the dairy industry. All things being equal, soy milk would be called what it is, soy emulsion.

The only relationship almond milk has to actual milk is that it is white and perhaps has some calcium. Besides almonds, its listed ingredients are spring water, calcium carbonate, tapioca starch, sea salt, stabiliser, carrageenan, emulsifier, sunflower, lecithin and natural flavouring.

The Australian Dairy Farmers are calling for change to food standards so that consumers trying to make a healthy choice have the benefit of transparent and accurate product labelling.

A ban on plant-based products using the ‘milk’ label would bring Australia into line with other countries after the European Court of Justice in 2017 mandated that dairy terms could not be used on plant based products, even with clarifying terms.

In that same year, a survey by Dairy Australia found that more than half of respondents bought plant based milk alternative because they perceived them to be healthier than dairy milk. Plant based ‘milk’ products have grown to be a $165 million per year industry.

Reminder for small businesses SM A LL businesses with fewer than 19 employees are being reminded to prepare for the Single Touch Payroll (STP) ahead of the September 30 start date.

STP has become mandatory for all small employers as of July 1, 2019, however the Australian Tax Office (ATO) granted an extension, allowing businesses more time to get ready until September 30.

Some employers and industries have unique circumstances and the ATO understands that some may need more time to get ready.

The ATO is working with employers to ensure they understand their options for STP, whether that is reporting now, getting a deferral, or working with their tax or Business Activity Statements agent to report quarterly (if eligible).

There are also concessions available for employers with unique circumstances, such as those who employ family members or ‘closely held’ payees, micro-employers with one to four employees, those who employ intermittent/seasonal workers, or employers who do not have access to a reliable internet connection.

A c c ord i ng to t he ATO, more t h a n 400,000 employers are already reporting their employees’ tax and superannuation information digitally through STP. Trivia for a terrific cause

COMMUNITY members passionate about dedicating their time to a great cause can put their brains to good use and take part in a trivia night this Friday night to raise funds for neurofibromatosis (NF).

NF is a genetic disorder that causes tumours to grow on the nerve cells, including the brain and spine. It affects as many as 1 in 2,500 births, in fact, it is more common than Cystic Fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Huntington’s disease combined.

For five-year-old local Xavier Wynn and his family, NF is a debilitating constant. Recently, Xavier’s condition has worsened and he is now required to wear a Boston brace 23 hours a day.

In an effort to raise awareness and much-needed funds for NF, Xavier’s mum, Karla Williams and grandmother, Kerry Connolly have organised a second round of Trivia with a Twist.

The event will provide a relaxed and fun environment for people to gather with friends and to raise funds and awareness for NF. Trivia with a Twist is taking place at Sherbourne Terrace this Friday, September 20 at 6:30pm. Tickets for the event are $45, including dinner. Free sanitary items for state school students IN an Australian first, young women and girls across the state will have access to free pads and tampons in every state school, saving their families money and promoting inclusion.

The $20.7 million investment will provide students in every government primary, secondary and specialist school in Victoria access to free pads and tampons, helping to remove barriers to getting great education.

Lack of easy access to sanitary items can negatively impact on students’ participation in sport and everyday school activities. Students may not be able to concentrate in class, feel comfortable or confident doing physical activities, or they may just miss school altogether.

Minister for Women and Youth, Gabrielle Williams said, “While getting your period is a normal part of life, for some young girls it can be a source of anxiety or embarrassment. This will help reduce the stigma and make it easier for girls at school.”

As part of this new government initiative, sanitary items will be available free of charge in school toilets, allowing students access to pads and tampons when they need them, relieving anxiety and embarrassment and ensuring they can get the most from their education.

Students will receive important health information about how to manage their periods with greater ease and less embarrassment and to normalise periods as a healthy part of growing up.

Jumping all the way to Turkey IT’S not often the circus visits your school and gives you the opportunity to travel overseas, but for one lucky student, this is a reality. 17-year-old Shepparton ACE Secondary College student, Brayden Miller, will be joining a group of other young people in the chance of a lifetime trip to Turkey alongside Westside Circus.

After the program ran through the school, showing students fun activities, games and skills involved with the circus, students were encouraged to apply for a 10-day trip next January with flights and accommodation all paid for.

Brayden was one of few students to be given this incredible opportunity, and is pretty excited about it.

Brayden said, “I’ve actually never been overseas before, or even on an aeroplane! I’m really excited and extremely grateful for the opportunity.

I love the acrobatics. Doing flips on the trampoline is probably my favourite circus activity.”

Brayden and other Shepparton ACE Secondary College students have been training in circus by Westside Circus as part of their Certificate III in Community Dance, Theatre and Events.

Glorious day to take flight LOCALS would have noticed the whirr and whizz of radio-operated planes overhead at Karramomus on the weekend.

More than 80 radio-controlled planes and their flyers flocked to the region on Saturday and Sunday to take part in the 38th annual Valley Radio Flyers Mammoth Scale Fly-In.

The event featured a range of radiocontrolled planes taking to the air, including replicas of planes from both World Wars, as well as civil planes, jets and turbines.

The weather was absolutely glorious on the way, with clear blue skies perfect for a great day of aero modelling and camaraderie.

The Mammoth Scale Fly-In is Australia’s premiere giant scale aircraft show and is proudly hosted by the Valley Radio Flyers every year.

Investing in our youth IN AN effort to tackle Australia’s alarming drug overdoses crisis, Victorian Police have partnered with Greater Shepparton City Council’s Word and Mouth once again to educate and warn young people of the dangers of drugs, especially ice (crystal methamphetamine).

According to the latest statistics, the number of Australians dying from unintentional overdoses has skyrocketed by almost 38 percent in recent years.

Fuelling this shocking rise is a nearly 3-fold increase in unintentional deaths involving stimulants since 2012, a 2.4fold increase in unintentional heroin overdose deaths and more than double the amount of unintentional deaths involving benzodiazepines.

Locally, the number of overdose deaths in Shepparton has doubled in the last ten years, with 12 overdose deaths reported for the 2003-07 period and 24 overdose deaths reported for 2013-17; the majority

of those the result of ice abuse.

Word and Mouth project manager, Jim Gow said, “This project is an important investment into the future of our young people locally. This is our sixth year of educating our young people around the dangers of the horrific drug.

“We continue to engage young people in schools, and have great relationships with all the local schools and alternative education settings.”

In the six years Mr Gow has been conducting these tours, he has visited in excess of 8,000 people from Greater Shepparton and other regions nearby.

Starting this week, Word and Mouth and Victoria Police will visit several education settings to spread the word about the issue of drug overdoses in Australia.

Things going bang in the night ON a clear night, some of us might be disposed towards looking to the sky to ask does life exist out there.

Apparently it does, if scientists looking at the Murchison meteorite are anything to go by in this era of scientific denial. The meteorite burst into the night sky and broke up over the township of Murchison. With some 80kg of the remnants having been collected and distributed to researchers around the world, spectrophotometric analysis has revealed it to contain large quantities of amino acids, one of the building blocks of life.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Murchison meteorite landing and the township of Murchison is having a ball, so to speak. The Murchison Historical Society is holding a number of events next weekend from September 27 to 29 that they hope will put the small town on the map.

Famous scientists from NASA and Chicago along with scientists from Australia are flying in and are going to talk about the meteorite and the significance of the material it contains. Aside from the talks, there will be films about the landing and parts of the original meteorite will be on display.

JOINT LETTER FROM LA TROBE AND GOTAFE REGARDING NEW SCHOOL Dear Editor, We write to express our support for the Greater Shepparton College proposal – a transformational project that will go a long way towards addressing the poor student outcomes that have been evident in the Shepparton region for some time, despite the best efforts of many excellent and dedicated teachers and school leaders in our state secondary schools. It is clear that a major shift is required to achieve better outcomes for young people in this region.

The one school approach will provide a better learning environment, significantly increase options and pathways for all students, and make it easier to cater for the needs of individual students. The new school will offer all VCE subjects, a VCAL program and a broad range of V ET options, providing a significant increase in the nu mber of subjec ts currently available at the existing four state secondary schools.

We note that designs for the new College campus were recently unveiled by Minister Merlino, and focus on positive attributes that can only be provided in a large school – greater subject choices, new learning and pathway opportunities and bet ter student suppor t – while maintaining the community atmosphere of a smaller school environment. Three ‘neighbourhood’ buildings, comprising three small houses with about 50 students in each year level, will each have their own library and dedicated wellbeing spaces. An Enterprise and Innovation Centre, a gymnasium and outdoor space for recreation, wellbeing and education have been incorporated into the plans which have been directly informed by feedback from students, teachers and the wider community.

The transformation will greatly help La Trobe University and GOTAFE to streamline the way we work with local schools, enabling more coherent and embedded process that better support students to move to further education, careers and employment. More importantly, this project will help to lift

educational outcomes for local secondary school students, and build greater levels of aspiration towards further study. While post-secondary school study is not always the answer for every student, it is essential for the productivity, health and wellbeing of the Greater Shepparton community that every student with the ability and aspiration has the opportunity to move to further study.

We acknowledge the fact that some community concerns about the project have been expressed in recent months, especially in relation to aspects of the transition arrangements that will be in place for several years. Given the scale of this change, there are many details to be worked through, and we recognise the importance of addressing and allaying community concerns to the extent that is possible. We have every confidence that the Greater Shepparton College Executive Principal, Shepparton Education Plan P roje c t B oa rd a nd D epa r t m ent of Education regional leaders will continue their work to this end.

We st rong ly bel ieve t hat ma k i ng this change, while inevitably requiring a period of transition that may not always be easy, will be worth it in the end because it is the best solution for i mproving st udent outcomes in Shepparton. It will give young people ac ro s s t he re g ion t he oppor t u n it y to transition to further education and rewarding careers, which is an investment not only in their future but that of the whole community.

Finding homes for beautiful animals continued from front page “I’ve always been really passionate about animals and as soon as I started to educate myself on the animal overpopulation crisis in Australia, I wanted to do something about it,” explained Goulburn Valley Pet Adoption and Rehoming founder, Tilliah Brooks.

Tilliah explained that, even though adoption and rehoming rates have improved significantly over recent years, Australia still has a long way to go in terms of animal care.

“Nobody intends to do wrong by a pet or animal in their community but a lot of people take the attitude of ‘it’s not my problem’ and leave it to somebody else,” Tilliah said.

“People with male cats who take this attitude and won’t get them de-sexed are irresponsible. The single biggest way to prevent animals from being put down is getting them de-sexed.”

In Australia every year, approximately 250,000 dogs and cats are humanely euthanased. According to the latest statistics, over 13 percent of all dogs and puppies received by RSPCA in the 2017-18 financial year still needed to be put down.

That percentage is even higher for cats and kittens; almost 23 percent of all cats and kittens donated to the RSPCA were unable to be reclaimed or rehomed and required euthanasia.

Goulburn Valley Pet Adoption and Rehoming are helping to lower these figures

even further. Only to be used as an absolute last result, their great service will provide help to animals who could no longer stay in the care of their owners.

A team of volunteers will find foster homes for the pets, ensuring all animals are de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and very well fed.

“At the moment, we are looking for people who we can adopt out these beautiful dogs and cats too,” Tilliah said.

“We would love to have more people on board to foster. Even if you can look after just one cat or dog, you will be helping in a huge way.”

Besides fostering or adopting pets, there are loads of other ways to help ensure the pets of the region are being loved. Goulburn Valley Pet Adoption and Rehoming are also accepting donations of pet food and blankets, creating little ‘take home hampers’ for some of the pets that are being adopted out.

“Considering we have only been open a couple of weeks, we are absolutely blown away by the level of support from the community so far,” Tilliah added. “And we want to thank everyone who has donated or contributed so far.”

We are now in Botswana, I am in a light plane flying over the Okavango Delta, the biggest inland delta in Sub-Saharan Africa. It’s one of the main attractions in this part of Africa, bringing thousands of tourists from all over.

But something has changed. Instead of the lush growth of this massive wetland and its huge waterways, things have dried up; this drought has taken its toll. Our pilot looks at me and says ‘it’s bad.’ If you know any climate change deniers, bring them

here to see for themselves. Not only is the government of Botswana concerned but adjoining governments are concerned too and they have formed the Southern African Committee to look into the matter. Here, they have made laws to stop people from building structures that would block the natural corridors that wild animals have used for centuries but they cannot make it rain.

Next day, we visit the Delta on the ground.

As we arrive at the water’s edge at Mokoro Station, there is a buzz as tourists and locals vie for the right to show us this wonder.

We are each allocated a lightweight canoe and a pole man. Each canoe takes two people, but because of their lightweight construction, you cannot move around much and leave to your pole man to balance it.

The pole has a divided prong on the foot to grab the bottom and propel you along in these shallow waters. It’s a magic feeling gliding along on this clear, still water, with just a light breeze touching the reeds as you float by under a clear blue sky.

The waterway is big enough that you don’t feel like you are with lots of others; rather, it’s a free, open feeling and a very special experience.

There are lots of birds and animals.

We saw elephants just on the shoreline and stopped off on an island and saw hippos in the water before re-joining

our canoes to glide back to base.

Tonight, we are staying in a tented camp; it’s situated in an open, private game park, which means the animals roam free in and around your tent.

I am sitting out on the front deck of the tent writing this story when I become aware of another presence. Looking over my left shoulder, I see a rather large elephant standing about two metres from me; he moved so silently I did not hear him coming on the freshly raked sand. I decide to move inside the tent and even though there is only a thin sheet of canvas between us, it feels much safer and finally, he moves on.

Later, we are having sundowners on the outside deck of the dining area when out of the dark emerges a big bull elephant.

He is huge, his ears are open wide and flapping as he approaches the deck (not a good sign). His trunk is sensing the railing and then the stairs next to where we are and we are all standing silently to see what will happen next. He swishes his trunk and then moves back into the darkness and there is a sigh of relief.

After dinner, I head back to my tent only to see two elephants standing at the entrance both trying to eat the same tree. I am advised to go back to the dining section and have another coffee; the elephants eventually leave and so do I, for bed.

Lying there in the dark you can hear the sounds of the night, more elephants outside and the grunting call of a lion in the distance; but eventually sleep comes in this world of wild things.

It’s early morning, it’s dark and it’s cold, but after a good breakfast we are off on a day’s game driving to the Moremi National Park and the early morning breeze is cold as we move along in our open-top 4x4s.

At Moremi, we see elephants together in family groups and large bulls striding by on their own.

Then, we sight a lion kill. Two lions have brought down a big buffalo and they have the carcass under a tree. Both lions have had their initial feast and are now resting in the shade, bellies full.

After taking photos we move onto other areas of the park but on our way back, we notice the lions and their kill has gone; maybe too many cameras.

Moremi hosts a vast number of wild animals and we saw quite a lot.

The lions were the highlight of the game drive for today, but who knows what tomorrow might bring.

By Steve Hutcheson FOR the Cats, it is not about winning and losing, it is how you play the game. The Cats are sitting on the bottom of the ladder. It is not their worst year - their percentage is sitting at 10.6 with 3,858 points against their 409 for the 2019 season. In 2013, their percentage was around 7.

Notwithstanding their losses and a near win against the second bottom on the ladder, Longwood, the Ardmona Cats have earned a new epithet: they are now the official worst football team in Australia, according to online betting.

It has not always been so bad for the Cats.

Over the past 100 years, they have been premiers 10 times in the different leagues they have played and Perry Meka, a former player, still holds the Kyabram District Football League record for the most goals scored in a season for kicking 174 back in 1992.

Wikipedia notes that the township of Ardmona has several prominent features including a corner shop, a primary school and a football field. Set among the regular rows of fruit trees that stretch to all points of the compass, the football ground and

clubhouse has a history that goes back to the club’s genesis in 1921. Having an initial area marked out at the primary school, a committee of locals was formed in 1923 to raise funds to purchase land on which the current football ground would be established.

The Cats’ current troubles are financial.

They need to raise around $100,000 to pay off past dues to the league in what seems to be a never-ending progression towards the corporatisation of country sporting clubs.

The increasing press coverage that the besieged club is receiving, possibly more than

any other club in the league, is working to make small inroads in fundraising.

Club supporter and local resident, Teisha McCoy has opened a GoFundMe page to raise $100,000 to go towards the club’s arrears. At the time of writing, they have raised around $11,000 in just over a month.

Notwithstanding their present difficulties, the Ardmona Cats represents all that is good about country sports from a player’s perspective. Rain, hail or shine, it is the game, not the winning that keeps them going.

THE long road to finals foot y in September has reached its final steps, with Kyabram set to take on Echuca in the Goulburn Valley League decider this Saturday.

At the preliminary final last weekend, Echuca proved too strong for underdogs, Shepparton Bears, defeating last year’s premiership winners by only a goal at the final siren.

Echuca started the game strong, leading Shepparton at quarter time by 22 points.

But the Bears fought back in the second term, scoring five goals against Echuca’s one to catch up by half time, trailing by only one point.

A goal by the Bears’ Jack Wilson saw the Sheppar ton team leading at the beginning of the third quarter for the first time all day. But the Bears’ dreams were quickly quashed, as dreams often do, with Echuca kicking six goals in the third to put them in the lead by a nail-biting seven points going into the final quarter.

Despite Shepparton Bears being the only team to successfully kick a goal in the final quarter, sloppy kicking elsewhere held the team back. During the fourth quarter, Shepparton scored ten points in the final term, against Echuca’s four.

At the final siren, the scores saw Echuca finish on 76, defeating Shepparton Bears at 68. The grand final will take place at Deakin Reserve this weekend, Saturday, September 22 at 2:30pm, bet ween Kyabram and Echuca.

FUTURE superstars from Bourchier Street Primary School were treated to a special visit from the Melbourne Renegades and Cricket Victoria last week.

The students were absolutely thrilled, taking part in a skills workshop with a range of activities, which included taking diving catches on an inflatable.

The Melbourne Renegades have spent

much of the last week visiting several of the schools around the region and in other rural areas, training the next generation of cricket stars and equipping them with skills in bowling, batting and fielding.

While visiting these areas, the cricketers have also bought along the 2019 Big Bash League trophy, with games set to commence in just over a month.

Scholarships for local women in sport THE VICTORIAN government is calling for applications for scholarships up to $10,000 in value, for women who are looking to pursue leadership and development roles in sport and active recreation.

Local member for Northern Victoria, Mark Gepp MP said, ”This is a great opportunity for women in Northern Victoria to help shape the sporting agenda through the popular Change Our Game scholarship program. Sport

is an integral part of our community and the Victorian government is proud to play its part in helping emerging female leaders enhance their skills and gain new opportunities.”

Scholarships range from $2000 to $10,000. The program has so far enabled more than 100 women working and volunteering in sport and recreation to access professional learning and development opportunities.

The Change Our Game scholarship program will fund activities such as organisational governance training; working with boards and committees; media training; leadership and management skills; sports administration and networking opportunities. Applications will close on 4 October.

THE EUROA Show and Shine is a familyfriendly day out showcasing the very best cars and motorcycles, with prizes up for grabs for best in show. Last year, over 800 cars and in excess of 450 bikes were on show, with around 8,000 people in attendance.

As a major sponsor of Euroa Show and Shine this year, the GMCU donated $6,000 to support the event.

Euroa Show and Shine vice president, Ray Read said, “We’ve been customers with the GMCU for a long time and are pleased to have them along as our major sponsor. This generous donation will help make this year’s show the best one yet!”

Ralph said, “The Euroa Show & Shine is a fantastic family event that not only showcases the vehicles on display, but also encourages people to come and see what is on offer in a beautiful part of our region.

GMCU is very proud to have ten branches located in our communities, and the team at our Euroa branch in particular are thrilled that we are able to support our local region by getting behind this event.”

Gates to the Seven Creeks Park for the Euroa Show and Shine will open at 8am on Sunday, October 6. Entry is $5 per person and kids under 16 are free. Show cars entry is $10 including driver, and motorcycles are $5 including rider.
