Students strike for climate change HUNDREDS of passionate locals took to the streets on Friday to participate in a global strike against climate change.

The Shepparton section of the rally was organised by 15-year-old Wanganui Park Secondary College student, Emily Minotti-Watson and saw participants embark on a grand march through the Maude Street Mall, chanting and ensuring their voices were heard.

“Children like me are giving up our education and standing here today because the adults of this world aren’t smart enough to do it themselves,” Ms Minotti-Watson said, speaking to a mixed group of students and adults. Her words were met with rapturous applause.

Dookie Wine Show brings out the best WINE improves with age, the older I get the more I like it. Improving with age, however, is not the case with the wine judged to be best of the Dookie Wine Show this year.

Going against the trend for the second year in a row, white wines took out the honours,

which, according to a local wine merchant and chairman of the Dookie wine show, Paul Phillips from Phillips Cellars, white wines should be fresh.

coming from Longleat Wines of Murchison that was indeed fresh. It was also the winner of Class 6 - Other Whites. The variety is from Italy and only a handful of vintners are growing this variety in Australia.

Sheed calls for Drum to be water minister AGAINST a backdrop of a large group of sombre farmers from the region, in an unexpected call to action, Independent Member for Shepparton District, Suzanna Sheed MP has called for the sacking of the Federal Minister for Water Resources, David Littleproud MP and for him to be replaced by local Federal representative, Damian Drum MP. “Damian has recently shown that he gets the issues and is calling for change, “ said Ms Sheed.

Farmers throughout the southern basin region are calling for the minister to be replaced.

“To date, Minister Litleproud has shown no appetite to investigate this important issue and continues to insist the plan should be delivered in full and on time, threatening southern basin farmers with further buybacks,” said Ms Sheed.

“It is ridiculous to have open barrages flushing fresh water into the ocean just to maintain the apparent myth that the Lower Lakes were never estuarine.”

Waaia dairy farmer Mark Bryant, along with his wife Monique attended the hastily called announcement. “It’s fantastic that she is speaking out. Water problems can easily be fixed. Everyone can see what is the problem and what needs to be done except the federal minister,” said Mark.

“I am involved in local community events such as the footy club and it is distressing to see the number of people chucking it in and leaving the area because they are being driven out by the water issues.”

ministers who put the interests of their own electorates ahead of the national interest and in particular, those of the Southern Murray Darling Basin.

In a statement to the press, Federal Member for Nicholls, Damian Drum has refused to answer a question regarding whether he wants to become Federal Water Minister, stating that Ms Sheed was ‘wasting time on federal issues she had nothing to do with’ because 90 percent of water policy are state issues.

“M s S he e d’s ongoi ng i nt ere s t i n s e n s at ion a l i si ng fe dera l p ol it ic s i s disheartening at a time when there are a whole raft of state-based policies causing devastation to our productive agriculture industries,” Mr Drum said.

“It would be in her constituents best interests if Ms Sheed focused her energies on driving immediate change in water policy at a state level (such as inter-valley trade, carryover, and delivery share policy) as she was elected to do.”

Extra funding will assist redevelopment works WITH the redevelopment of GV Health still going on, the Victorian government have announced an additional boost of $58 million that will be used to expand medical imaging services within the emergency department.

GV Health Board Chair, Rebecca Woolstencroft said, “The injection of these funds helps us progress with our capital development program to ensure we are able to provide facilities that are modern and of a great standard for people we provide care for across the Goulburn Valley.”

There are currently three sites under construction with the dialysis unit due to be completed by the end of October this year. The new dialysis building will be available from early November increasing the number of chairs to 15.

“T h is an nou ncement fits n icely w it h t he c u r rent pl a n n i ng work being undertaken following the State Government commitment earlier in the year,” said Matt Sharpe, Chief Executive Officer at GV Health.

Stage 1 of the redevelopment is due for completion in late 2021.

Special access for students to study AS one of more than 400 Indigenous students currently at the University of Melbourne, Ethan Savage is on a cultural learning curve.

Ethan is currently the mentor for Murrup Barak Indigenous Institute at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus and says he sees students from such amazingly diverse cultural backgrounds.

“At Murrup Barak, we have our common space. You have your non-Indigenous friends, but it’s great to have that space where you can connect with Indigenous friends,” Ethan says.

“They provide a good way for us to stay connected to culture and create a family that’s not necessarily blood, but more connected through the university. That’s definitely helped me cope with the whole moving-away-from-family aspect of things.”

Ethan, who was born in Cairns and grew up in Canberra, followed a popular path to the University of Melbourne in 2017 by applying under the university’s special entry and equity program, Access Melbourne, which has a category for Indigenous applicants.

The Access Melbourne program enabled Ethan to enter the Bachelor of Arts with a yearly scholarship of $5,000.

The scheme also offers guaranteed entry to degrees in biomedicine, commerce, design and science. Entry to courses including targeted mentoring for Indigenous students - the Bachelor of the Arts (Extended) and Bachelor of Science (Extended) - is guaranteed for ATARs of 50.00 and 55.00 respectively, together with a college place for the first year. Applicants may also be admitted to other courses with reduced ATARS, but places will not be guaranteed.

Huge boost for local footy fans AFTER taking place for a number of years in places across metropolitan Melbourne, the AFL V/Line Cup is being taken out to regional Victoria. Following on from four years in the Latrobe Valley, Greater Shepparton is to play host to the four-day carnival from Monday, September 23 to Thursday, September 26.

Held annually, the V/Line Cup carnival brings together the most talented male and female regional junior footballers to battle headto-head against other top performers in their age group.

Currently in its 16th year, the V/Line Cup has grown to include fourteen under-15 boys and eight under-15 girls teams.

THE prospect of attending court as a witness, as a victim or even as someone who has to face the consequences of their actions can be intimidating and having someone to offer some form of moral support will no doubt help to alleviate whatever anxiety might be felt.

The Court Network is a group of nonlegal volunteers who are trained to assist people through the process and protocols of courts and court procedures on the day.

At their quarterly meeting of volunteers f r o m Wa n g a r a t t a , Wo d o n g a a n d Shepparton, all together at Fryers Food Store, the group celebrated the 90th birthday of one of their numbers, Jock Vance. light at the Wangaratta courts, helping people understand the procedures and protocols and holding the hands of nervous users.

The Court Network are in the process of looking for volunteers to provide nonlegal information and support to court users in all aspects of criminal and civil matters, including those related to family violence. Volunteers commit to one day a week on a rostered basis and need a nonjudgemental approach to the work as well as being good communicators and familiar with computers and internet access.

A ride along the vines THIS November, locals are encouraged to grab their bikes and participate in the Tatura 200 Charity Bike Ride & Walk for its 12th year. Each year you’re invited to ride or walk a variety of distances, the most recognised of which is the 200km ride. The event caters to all levels of fitness, with participants encouraged to challenge themselves or enjoy a fun day out with family and friends.

In 2018 the event raised $90,000 for charities, groups and organisations in the Goulburn Valley and surrounds.

The 25km Gears & Graze ride was introduced to the event last year and was a huge success, selling out quickly. Gears

& Graze takes place at Longleat Wines in Murchison, where riders enjoy a flat, straight ride out to Murchison, followed by antipasto hampers, wine, live music and family friendly entertainment on arrival. Buses are available for riders (and bikes) back to Tatura.

Galloping through fire IT’S almost that time of year again when the Shepparton Showgrounds is filled with carnival rides, animals, and fun for the 143rd Annual Shepparton Show!

This year’s highlights will include the Rings of Fire Horse Show Spectacular, which is the only one of its kind in the world. It involves horse and rider jumping through six rings on fire with cannons pushing flames 20 feet into the air, whipcracking and horsemanship displays. The horse stunt show will be performed on both nights of the Show from 8pm.

Residents to have a say in how city develops RESIDENTS of Greater Shepparton are to be given the opportunity to have their say on how future challenges for the city will be approached with the release of a new draft ‘Shepparton and Mooroopna 2050: regional City Growth Plan’.

Prepared in conjunction with the Victorian Planning Authority, the plan looks at the sustainable development of Shepparton and Mooroopna over the next 30 years addressing issues such as liveability, land supply, urban renewal, infrastructure, transport and water consumption.

Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe said, “This is a n i mpor t a nt oppor t u n it y for residents to have their say on how future challenges will be approached.”

Community feedback following the release of a draft in February this year indicated a need to protect and celebrate open spaces in the area, improved access to the river and surrounds and create additional residential and industrial land supply with supporting infrastructure to accommodate growth.

“T he Grow t h Pla n w i l l be t he blueprint to build on Shepparton and Mooroopna’s unique characteristics to maximise the long-term economic, social and environmental benefit for the community,” said Cr O’Keeffe.

have a safe working environment.

Director for Infrastructure with the council, Phil Hoare said, “Everyone has the right to a safe workplace and the focus of this campaign is for our staff who work on road reserves on a daily basis are safe.”

The risk of death or injury increases with small increases in speed. Greater Shepparton City Council Chief Executive Officer, Peter Harriot said, “Drivers need to realise that speeding puts lives at risk. Our staff have a right to safe workplace and drivers need to play a part in providing it.”

It is going to be a hot one WE all are probably aware that this beautiful spring weather will change over the coming months and it is forecast we are going to be having another hot and dry summer with temperatures hitting the high 40s at times.

It is somewhat disconcerting when you take a moment to consider, how in a country as affluent as Australia purports to be, where the government’s most important accomplishment is how much money they have accumulated in their coffers as a surplus. At the same time, they have completely abrogated their combined responsibilities to some of the most pressing social issues this country faces. So much so that community groups and industry are obliged to take matters in hand to address them when the government doesn’t.

People are doing it tough across the country, yet it is Shepparton that features as an area with one of the highest levels of homelessness we have to offer. According to Celia Adams, CEO of Beyond Housing, they address over 2000 cases of homelessness a year while on any one night more than 300 people will be working through some degree of homelessness.

Stepping up to the mark as socially responsible citizens, the management at Anaconda have provided 20 two-man tents that will be used as emergency temporary housing for some of those now sleeping rough.

Responding to, and seeking to draw attention to the issue, Josiah Shala, a presenter at the radio station Hit 96.9 recently did four days living a homeless experience, couch surfing, staying in crisis accommodation, sleeping in his car and finally sleeping rough in the Maude St Mall.

It is a problem that is not going to go away unless the government, as it is with many other issues facing the country, come to realise that higher ends of society can take care of their own needs, their job is to look out for those that can’t. Anaconda is to be commended for their initiative.

Agriculture is booming THE latest report from the Rural Bank could put a smile on the face of farmers in the Goulburn Valley region. According to the banks’ Australian Agricultural Trade 2018/19, agricultural exports have increased in value to a record high of $50.7 billion.

C at t le ex por t s had t he la rge st increase notwithstanding the droughtinduced de-stocking activity taking place during the year. Horticulture was next, particularly nuts with a 39.1 percent increase over the year, followed by fruit (22.1 percent) and vegetables (18.4 percent).

Other commodities to see export growth were cotton, sheep, wine, dairy and sugar, while cropping, wool and seafood all experienced declines.

Chief Operating Officer for the Rural Bank, Will Raynor said, “Exports to China experienced benefit from tariffs being reduced or eliminated.

“The ongoing US-China trade war and the tariffs imposed by China on US products has created several opportunities for Australian producers of dairy, cotton and almonds. Wool has unfortunately experienced a rapid decline in consumer demand into China,” Mr Raynor said.

The report suggests tariffs imposed on Chinese clothing in the US trade war have directly impacted on Chinese production and fibre demand coupled with weaker global confidence.

W hile demand for Australian agricultural exports remains positive, supply challenges, particularly for sheep and cattle due to poor seasonal conditions, will limit production and as a consequence will limit export volumes in the coming year.

With over two-thirds of Australian agricultural production going overseas, farmers need to take note of overseas trends and global politics.

Dookie Wine Show brings out the best THE Dookie Wine Show has now been going for 16 years with the aim of promoting local wines and this year was no different.

Held at the McIntosh Centre at the Shepparton Showgrounds in conjunction with Shepparton GOTAFE where the students provided the catering to over 200 attendees with food and matching wines, seven awards were presented to different classes of wine.

Taking out honours in Class-1 for a Shiraz was a 2018 Wine by Sam Shiraz of Forest Hut. In Class 2 - Cabernet was a 2016 Cabernet from John Gehrig of Rutherglen. Class 3 - Merlot was awarded to Gapsted Wines of Myrtleford for their 2018 Cabernet Merlot. Class 4-Other Reds was also awarded to John Gehrig for their 2017 Durif. In the whites, the award for Class 5 - Chardonnay was awarded to the Gapsted High Country 2017 Chardonnay.

The final award for Class 7 - Sparklings went to Longleat Wines for their Cuvee Brut.

While the most consumed wine of the evening was the Garganega, which is a cross between a Riesling and a Pinot Grigio that has a fresh taste on the front palate trending to a peach flavour on the middle palate and finishes off clean and crisp, a wine over which there was much comment during the evening was the John Gehrig Durif.

With a general interest in anything red and wet, I was challenged to try the Garganega, which will be central to the next warm Saturday afternoon in the sun.

Students produce artwork in continuation of their culture CULTURAL Indigenous imagery has existed in Australia for millennia. For Indigenous people, in the absence of a written language, rock painting dating back 60,000 years has been a means of communicating important cultural stories throughout the generations.

Advance to the twentieth century, street art has adapted from annoying vandalism to commissioned projections of murals of important events or people appearing in different locations around the world. Students undertaking the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Cultural Arts certificate II at Shepparton GOTAFE have worked on a project Page 18 – The Adviser. that adapts the new medium with their ancient heritage to continue the storytelling in the traditional way.

To that end, nine students have c ont r ibut e d to t he i m a ger y a nd design in creating a mural around the basketball cou r t at t he G OTA F E campus. Melbourne street artist George Manioudakis as artist-in-residence assisted with the design and helped the students master the medium and helped bring the vision to life.

The work, based around a river red gum portrays the river landscape, its vibrant colour and the living culture of the indigenous people.

Students strike for climate change continued from front page THE student climate strike is part of a wider climate strike, which saw millions of people march in streets in cities across the globe, three days ahead of the UN Emergency Climate Summit in New York.

“You tell me that climate change is a cycle, that it is natural. But the temperature is changing 10 times faster than it has in the past 65 million years,” Ms Minotti-Watson continued. “Atmospheric CO2 is increasing at a dramatic and unprecedented rate which will only speed the rising temperature and make it less likely to dodge the extinction of the human race.”

The strike calls for all forms of government to take climate change seriously, with Emily addressing a notably absent Greater Shepparton City Council at the rally.

“To our councillors, do not let your denial or your desire to win approval from climate deniers destroy our future,” Ms Minotti-Watson said.

Following her inspirational speech, the audience heard from 22-year-old Shepparton ACE College student, Zak Donaldson, who said it was now up to the government and industry leaders to work towards a clean future.

“I, like many others, fear that if change isn’t made it will be too late and that the choices made by those in power today will devastate generations to come,” Mr Donaldson said.

Next, the audience heard from 17-year-old former Violet Town student, Asha-Mae Chapman-Ralph, who reflected on her own experience witnessing climate change on her doorstep.

“We have seen our family’s dams dry up and our animals starve – we have to break the cycle of denial that has been built up,” she said.

The youngest speaker on the day came was 12-year-old Bourchier Street Primary School student, Bonnie, who bravely spoke of her concern for the environment.

“I understand that climate change is something that is threatening our planet and the lives of all plants and animals that live here. As a 12-year-old, I get it, why don’t the leaders of the country?” Bonnie said.

“I have a feeling that the impacts of climate change are not yet scaring world leaders enough. They are still more

concerned about making money for the here and now. But what about us? What will be left for me to make a living from?”

Rounding out the speeches was a fiery talk from committee member for the Goulburn Valley Environment Group, Louise Costa, who criticised local councillors and the government for their lack of action when it comes to climate change.

“Glaciers are melting, seas are rising and politicians are not panicking. Shame on you Australia – climate change is a science and not a religion,” Ms Costa said.

Following the speeches, the crowd started marching around the block, chanting to the sound of drums for their future.

SPECTACULAR, FAMILYFRIENDLY AND AFFORDABLE The wonderful venue of Euroa’s pristine Seven Creeks Park will once again be the site of the Australian National Show and Shine, on Sunday, October 6.

Acknowledged as one of the top Show and Shine in Australia, the local event is now also recognised as one of the best value-for-money family entertainment events for motoring enthusiasts.

Event director, Ross Holt said that the committee had concentrated on obtaining new major attractions for the show this year, whilst keeping the admission price as low as possible.

“The show this year will feature a great range of captivating vehicles, ranging in age from 1902, with a rare AMC Rambler from NSW – the oldest model car ever displayed at our event – right up to the incredible 2019 all-electric Jaguar I-Pace from Darryl Twitt Motors.”

This year’s theme will be the 1970s, inspired by motorcyclists who have acknowledged the 50th anniversary of the iconic ‘Easy Riders’ movie, which will be screened at the Euroa Community Cinema on the Saturday night prior to the show. There will also be a competition, with prizes for the best-dressed 1970s costumes, and more.

As expected, bikes will feature 1970s ‘Choppers’ but will also continue the dirt bike theme. For the cars, look out for a convention of Holden Sandman panel vans and some spectacular 1970s vehicles, including a Torana A9X, valued in excess of $300,000.

cars, with the addition of some very unusual special interest cars, such as the ‘LapreCorn’, a 50-year project for a Maserati replica, plus some interesting rally cars, recently returned especially for the event.

There are over 70 trophies on offer across a variety of classes, the most coveted of which will be the GMCU ‘Best in Show’ and ‘Best Motorcycle in Show.’ Mothers Polishes will also present their top awards, with presentations taking place at centre stage at 1:30pm.

Once again, the focus is to ensure the event is established as a familyfriendly environment by including new and innovative attractions for everybody. Attractions such as the Euroa mini railway, horse and carriage rides, two jumping castles, and a petting zoo ensure that nobody of any age gets bored on the day.

This year, fans of the Show and Shine can remember the day by taking home some official merchandise, the first time in several years merchandise from the event has been offered for sale. There will also be food and drink stalls, trade stalls and entertainment, including live bands.

According to the latest statistics conducted

by Deakin University, retirees reported their overall wellbeing at an average of more than 80 points. This was consistent across all categories, with that average being even higher for regional areas.

Associate Professor, Delyse Hutchinson said, “As individuals remain in retirement and continue to age, promoting wellbeing through health, personal safety and community

The study found that retirees in regional areas report higher levels of overall enjoyment, scoring higher on ‘community correctedness’, ‘personal safety’ and ‘future security.’

“It appears that people in regional areas feel more connected to, and safer in, their local communities, which is in turn linked to improved life satisfaction,” Associate Professor, Hutchinson added.

Tech-savvy seniors buck trends THE MOST common stereotype regarding seniors and technology is that they’re being ‘left behind’ with the huge wave of advancements, particularly in the last ten years.

But a recent report titled ‘Senior Surfers’ from National Seniors Australia challenges this stereotype.

An online survey of more than 4,500 citizens aged over 50 found that 70 percent use an internet search engine everyday, 40 percent use Facebook everyday (including about 20 percent of those aged 80+), 63 percent don’t feel technology is designed for younger generations and around 68 percent don’t feel frustrated using new technology.

McCallum says the latest survey challenges negative stereotypes about older Australians and technology. “ There are just too many blanket statements that are very negative about older people’s skills, such as ‘they’re behind the times’, ‘they’re digitally illiterate’ or ‘there’s a digital divide between young and old,’” Professor McCallum said.

Approximately 31.4 percent of those surveyed regarded themselves as ‘Super Surfers’ – someone very comfortable using digital technology in their everyday lives.

According to the statistics, ‘Super Surfers’ are more likely to be women and are also more likely to have children, be in good health and are often still participating in the workforce.

Increased specialist appointments for regional residents RESIDENTS throughout the Goulburn Valley are set to receive at least an extra 14,000 specialist doctor appointments closer to home, saving the need for inconvenient and costly trips to Melbourne.

The commitment is part of a $136.2 million investment from the Victorian government, which will fund around 500,000 specialist appointments in regional Victoria.

Too often, regional Victorians are forced to hit the road to get the specialist treatment they need.

Patients in the Goulburn Valley requiring specialist treatment for diabetes and nephrology will benefit from extra services at GV Health in 2019-20.

In total acr os s V ic tor ia, the V ic tor ian government is paving the way for an extra 75,000 appointments for patients with heart conditions, 30,000 appointments for patients with arthritis, 50,000 appointments for Victorians with chronic pain and an extra 40,000 appointments for cancer patients.

It’s all part of the State Government’s plan to ensure regional Victorians receive the same world-class healthcare as Melbourne patients, no matter where they live.

This weekend will see flowers blooming and on display at the Spring Spectacular of Orchids hosted by the Goulburn Valley Orchid Club (GVOC).

On Friday afternoon there will be over 400 flowering orchids exhibited by GVOC members. Friday night, they will be judged by four Orchid Society Council of Victoria judges and one local judge, Michelle Banfield from Flourish on McLennan in Mooroopna, will judge the Floral Art section.

GVOC president, Chris Ibbotson said, “We are expecting 300 to 400 visitors to come through the doors to admire the beautiful and breathtaking orchids. We also have a photography section and floral arrangements along with opportunities to purchase plants from local and interstate growers.

“The club also has an accessory stall supplying pots, stakes, potting medium and everything else one would need to pot up their orchids.

“We will be having potting demonstrations where people will walk away with a wealth of knowledge, armed to grow their own orchids successfully.”

IT HAS been said that one man’s trash is often another man’s treasure. In this day of consciousness about waste and movements towards rec ycling, it is refreshing to see that local industrial waste is being put to good use.

The group at Stanhope Men’s Shed have entered an arrangement with the local Fonterra factory to remove as much of the packaging waste that comes with the new machines and equipment they are installing as part of their makeover. The material is put to good use, particularly with some of the members and as a marketable product to local farmers.

The proceeds are then used to improve

the facility of the Men’s Shed with new equipment and new projects.

Coor dinator for the Men’s Shed, Des Crichton said, “We have taken out hundreds of trailer and truckloads of old packaging material that we have had to rent additional storage space and with the proceeds, we have purchased a forklift to help handle the material. Where a lot of men’s Shed rely upon grants, we have become self-sustainable.”

In recognition of their recycling efforts, at the National Men’s Shed Awards this month, the Stanhope Men’s Shed received an award for Outstanding Recycling/ Upcycling Activity.

Redevelopment underway for Mooroopna aged care WORK is progressing on the $20 million redevelopment of Shepparton Village’s Mooroopna-based aged care home to be known as Mooroopna Place.

Work on the old building began in July this year with the demolition of what was previously Waratah Lodge.

Two other facilities, Boronia House and Grevillea Lodge are being entirely gutted

and redeveloped to hold 60 beds, while a new wing containing 40 beds will be constructed on the old Waratah Lodge site.

Nicholson Construction won the tender for the work and recently appointed Tatura-based Dennis Meka as one of two site supervisors for the project.

As site foreman, Dennis will work with site manager Greg McCalman to supervise

all employees and contractors on site over the course of the build.

Sheppar ton Villages chief executive officer, Kerri Rivett said, “Shepparton Villages and Nicholson Construction are committed to using local contractors as much as possible as part of the project, and we are looking forward to putting our experience gained in the construction of

Maculata Place at Tarcoola, in to practice here in Mooroopna.”

Funded entirely by Shepparton Villages, Mooroopna Place is due for completion at the end of 2020. A fundraising campaign, A Place to Call Home is running to raise money to help furnish Mooroopna Place.

Help for first home buyers ACCORDING to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the percentage of first home buyers entering the Australian market has fluctuated significantly over the last 30 years.

Between 1992 and 2002, the average percentage of dwellings financed for first home buyers sat comfortably at around 20-25 percent. Since then, this figure dropped markedly, often as low as 12 percent, and only managing to frequently top that 20 percent figure again around the 2008-09 financial crisis.

Since January 2012, the percentage has remained below 20 percent, reaching as low as 13 percent in September 2016.

In recent years, however, that number has shown growth, with the average percentage dwellings financed for first home buyers, rising to around 18.3 percent in November 2018.

In an effort to continue this upward trend, the government has recently introduced legislation to implement the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme and the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation’s (NHFIC) new research function to support first home buyers.

The scheme will help first home buyers enter the property market sooner by providing a guarantee that will allow eligible first home buyers on low and middle incomes to purchase a home with a deposit of as little as 5 percent, supporting 10,000 first home buyers each financial year.

In a statement regarding the new scheme, the government recognises that saving for a deposit has become a more significant barrier to entering the housing market than the ability to service a home loan.

Applicants will be subject to eligibility criteria, including having taxable incomes up to $125,000 per annum for singles and up to $200,000 per annum for couples. The scheme will apply to owner-occupied loans on a principal and interest basis and will be subject to regional price gaps.

The legislation also establishes a new housing research function within NHFIC. As part of its new function, NHFIC will examine housing demand, supply and affordability in Australia, complementing existing housing-related research.

The scheme complements other government initiatives to reduce pressure on housing affordability in Australia and support local communities.

Spiire and Tank developed the design through a joint design workshop, with Tank completing the structural work.

Stellar finish to an undefeated season IT was a mere two points which stood in the way of Kyabram Football Club winning the 2018 grand final against Shepparton Bears. The final siren saw the Shepparton Bears at 9.9-63, narrowly edging ahead of Kyabram’s poor kicking at 8.13-61. At the time, Kyabram were sitting comfortably, having maintained a lengthy winning streak since 2015.

On Sunday, Kyabram had a chance to redeem itself, staring down Echuca for the 2019 premiership flag.

It didn’t take long for Kyabram to prove themselves as the stronger team on the day, leading at half time by 32 points.

But Echuca certainly didn’t go down without a fight, never letting the margin between the two teams slip beyond their grasp. At the final siren, Kyabram was up 22 points, scoring 10.14-74 against Echuca’s 7.10-52.

During the post-match presentations, Kyabram players were acknowledged for their achievements, with Pat Wearden securing the AFL Vic Country medal, Jake Reeves awarded the Wilf Cox medal and Mick Mattingly securing the Barry Connolly medal for best player in the finals.

Celebrating opportunities, participation and development for all T H ER E’s excitement, anticipation and a sense of the unknown for athletes across Shepparton as the new Shepparton Athletics Club heads toward their launch day.

Athletes of the Goulburn Valley have enjoyed Little Athletics for years but sadly without a local avenue to continue into senior athletics. The new Shepparton Athletics Club will provide athletics in the Goulburn Valley with what they’ve been missing for some time.

To celebrate, the committee has been working hard organising a special launch day for Sunday, October 6. With gates opening at 12:30pm ahead of the official opening at 1pm, the launch event will provide an opportunity for the new club to launch their uniform, announce the winner of the logo design competition, and for community members to receive information on the new club.

At the launch event, there will also be clinics, fun novelty events, face painting and a jumping castle to keep the little ones entertained. Players from the Shepparton District Junior

Football League will also be competing in a sprint event to find out who is the fastest footy player in the region.

Following the official proceedings, community members will be welcomed to take part and test their skills in a mix of athletics events and see if they can perform like their favourite Olympic hero.

Shepparton Athletics Club president, Doug Cobbledick said, “We are ready to run and we invite the community to join us to celebrate our launch day.

“No one should feel that they couldn’t try athletics and everyone has their own ability. If you have a fitness goal or if you’re a past athlete, current athlete, or even if you’ve never tried athletics before, the Shepparton Athletics Club is going to be attractive to you.”

Review of waterway speed limits WHEN a water playground is a home to both powered and non-powered water-craft, unless there is some level of regulation, the possibility of serious safety incidents occurring is ever-present.

Lake Nagambie and the Goulburn River are two such water playgrounds affected.

To that end, Strathbogie Shire Council and the Goulburn Murray Water and Maritime Safety, Victoria have made a decision to undertake a review and is now seeking to get a consultant on board to manage the project.

Users of these waterways will have the opportunity to input into the upcoming speed limit and zoning review of the waterways.

Nagambie Lakes Ward Councillor, Debra Bowers said, “We have seen a significant boom in tourism and development in Nagambie and the number of vessels, both powered and nonpowered sharing the waterways has caused a number of serious safety concerns for the community and the visitors.

“It is now time to consider the current challenges and opportunities for recreational use of the waterways and have a conversation about what needs to be done.”

A ny r ule change that comes from the investigation will be gazetted in the Victorian Government Gazette and in the Vessel Operating and Zoning rules for Victorian waters.

Superstars honoured with awards

THE best footballers and netballers from the 2019 GOTA FE Goulburn Valley League (GVL) season were celebrated last week at the annual awards night.

T he countdow n for the Morrison Medal was a nail-biting affair. At the end of the evening, with numbers finally tallied, Rochester football player Nathan Marrone polled the most votes, with 21 for the season. But Marrone’s one-match suspension in round 17 for head-butting made him ineligible to receive the award, meaning the Morrison Medal was awarded instead to Kyabram’s Mick Mattingly, who scored 19 votes in the 2019 season.

Moving down the list of votes for the Morrison Medal, third place was awarded to Echuca coach, Andrew Walker (18

votes), followed by Seymour co-coach, Jason Cole (14 votes), Tatura coach, Jamason Daniels (13 votes) and Benalla player, David Mennen (13 votes).

At the GOTAFE GVL netball best-andfairest awards, there was one clear winner.

Shepparton United goaler, Jessie BarnesHill ran rings around the competition, taking home the Wellman Family Award eight votes above second place. With 30 votes, Jessie was the clear winner for 2019, followed by Seymour defender, Meg Grbac (22 votes), Mooroopna youngster, Dayna Williams (21 votes) and Echuca goaler, Claudia Mawson (19 votes).
