By Danielle Cox IT’S almost that time of the year again when the weather is warming up, the sun is shining, and the Shepparton Showgrounds come alive with the lights and sounds of the Annual 143rd Shepparton Show next Friday and Saturday, October 11 – 12.

143 years is quite a long time, and the show seems to get bigger and better each year with so much to see and do for all ages.

This year’s highlights will include the Rings of Fire Horse Show Spectacular, which is the only one of its kind in the world. It involves horse and rider jumping through six rings on fire with cannons pushing flames 20 feet into the air, plus whip-cracking and horsemanship displays. The horse stunt show will be performed on both nights of the Show from 8pm.

High tech treatment of cancer coming to Shepparton C A NC E R is one of those insid ious diseases that affects countless people in the community, year in and year out.

In coming to terms with the treatment, GenesisCare have begun establishing a new oncology unit in Shepparton that is due to open this coming December once the linear particle accelerator is installed.

The linac, as the accelerator is known, is used to fire atomic particles at cancer cells to destroy them. The unit itself will be contained in a concrete bunker where the walls and ceiling are constructed from a specially designed concrete that is 2.1m thick.

James Curtin, the site supervisor for Erilyan Projects, who is overseeing the construction, is confident that construction will be completed on schedule.

“80 to 85 percent of the subcontractors and suppliers for the project are local, which has helped get the job done on time.

On completion, the oncology unit will employ around 20 people. Dr Grace Ong, who will lead a team of three oncologists

along with nursing and administrative support positions for which they are now in the process of recruiting, was on site to inspect the work progress.

Of pies and pastries BAKERIES in rural areas are extremely underrated. I used to live in Melbourne where it is near impossible to find a home-cooked pie or sausage roll. Upon returning to Shepparton, I was surprised and grateful to see such a variety of bakeries doing well and cooking delicious treats.

Despite this, many bakeries in the Hume region have reported a critical shortage of qualified baking staff to fill roles in baking, front and back of house, and pastry cooking.

Working collaboratively with bakeries across the region, GOTAFE have recently opened new baking facilities, made possible due to funding from the Victorian State Government’s Regional and Specialist Training Fund (RSTF).

GOTAFE CEO, Travis Heeney said, “The RSTF funding allows GOTAFE to provide a fully upgraded simulated baking facility that students can learn and hone their skills in. By doing so, our students are learning the skills the industry requires to help meet the critical need for staff.”

Staying ahead of emergencies HEART attacks can happen at any time.

As a daily workplace and weekly meeting place for parishioners, St Mary’s Primary School in Mooroopna have invested in an AED Defibrillator as a precautionary measure, should there ever be the need.

Handing over the unit to Anthony Butts, St Mary’s Primary School principal, was Merv Fernando, director of Indigenous Medical Supplies, a local firm specialising in medical equipment in the Goulburn Valley.

Several years ago, Merv’s father had a fatal heart attack which led him towards creating a business that would help to serve the needs of the Indigenous community and change attitudes and health literacy among the community while employing other Indigenous people into the company.

Taking over the defibrillator, Anthony Butts said, “The staff are all trained in

first-aid and know how to use the defibrillator, so it was just a matter of buying one. We like to support local industries and especially local Indigenous companies, which is why we chose Indigenous Medical Supplies.”

Peep the new plaque before you embark DURING World War I, the Mooroopna Train Station was a crucial Australian landmark. At the time, all available canned fruit from the region was loaded on to trains at Mooroopna, commencing a long journey to Europe to feed service personnel.

Originally constructed in 1881 at a cost of 599 pounds, the old station building also played a pivotal role in helping establish the fruit industry in the local area, helping regional growers transport their products to Melbourne and Sydney.

In January last year, a suspicious fire destroyed the historic train station building, leaving those travelling via train to

Melbourne without appropriate shelter and the town of Mooroopna mourning the loss of their 107-year-old building.

Fol low i n g t h e d e ploy m e nt of a n interim shelter at the station, the Victoria Government has delivered the installation of a new, heritage-style shelter to cater for passengers travelling on V/Line services.

Yesterday, the new shelter was officially opened with a complimentary plaque, which traces the station’s journey from the original construction in 1881 to its current form. Designed by the Historical Society of Mooroopna, the new plaque reminds locals and travellers alike of the station’s rich history.

Another major key to successful business is to provide free (timed/monitored) parking.

It’s hardly ‘rocket science’ however we tend to complicate things.

Shopping centres all over the world and right here in Shepparton provide ample free parking, so why don’t we as a city do

the same and provide a positive experience to the highly sought after and valuable shoppers we desperately need in our CBD? W hen it comes to feedback from shoppers’ experience in our CBD, the feedback is not good.

So, what can we do in the CBD to improve the shopper experience? A great start would be to have a long-term vision for the future of the Shepparton CBD.

We should also provide enough carparks for both shoppers and employees of businesses with good long term planning, provide free (timed/monitored) parking, like so many of our regional cities around Australia do.

Carpark funds could be set aside for the purchase of vacant land and commercial premises that’s passed its used-by date. This would be a great investment by the city for

the welfare and wellbeing of our CBD. Opening the Maude Street Mall would also allow an excellent opportunity to beautify it and provide more car parks.

Together, let’s make Shepparton CBD a world-class friendly place to shop, eat and play… it could be done with strong conviction and with a vision and plan for the long term benefit of all for generations to come.

Tradies put their hand up for cancer

A GROUP of local tradies got together for a breakfast at Mooroopna Hardware earlier this month. While the talk was about tools and materials used in their dayto-day activities, they also were doing good for the community.

Some 20 suppliers to the hardware store had donated hand tools, gift vouchers and a range of materials that the management team then auctioned off over the breakfast chatter.

At the end of the breakfast, they had

managed to sell off all the goods to raise $460 that was donated to the Cancer Council.

Mooroopna Hardware manager, Joey Campanelli said, “The idea was to get some tradies in for an egg and bacon roll and a coffee while some of our suppliers provided demonstrations of their gear and we held the auction during the morning.”

W hile in the interest of ever yone attending, the morning had the added benefit of doing good for the community.

FIFTY years ago, on September 28, 1969, the people of Murchison were disrupted from their usual Sunday morning activities, getting ready for church, by the sounds of a sonic boom followed by a shower of rock fragments falling all over the countryside.

It has become known globally as the Murchison meteorite, one of the rarest forms of its type and has been studied at major research facilities across the world.

On its fiftieth anniversary, scientists from these institutions have descended upon Murchison to mark its arrival, many to talk about the basis of their research into aspects of the meteorite.

The town of Murchison also celebrated the anniversary with an array of events held over three days, including talks and films, a book launch, mural painting, scavenger hunt and more. The museum

was open all weekend, boasting bits of the meteor for visitors to admire.

The Murchison meteorite is known as carbonaceous chrondrite, weighing more than 100kg and estimated to be more than 4.6 billion years old, formed during the early history of the solar system. As it hit the earth’s atmosphere, the meteorite exploded as a bright orange ball and dull orange tail bursting into small fragments that spread across a wide area over Murchison.

One of the more interesting features of the Murchison meteorite is the presence of amino acids, one of the building blocks of DNA, the genetic code of living cells.

Recent studies have indicated the presence of sugar compounds.

Perhaps there are other forms of life out there somewhere.

Scalpers hit ticket sales

IT MUST be somewhat disheartening to stand in a queue waiting to be seated at a big name performance only to find the tickets you have purchased for all the family are not authorised and you are then turned away.

Scalpers operate all over the world and in turn, they have come to Shepparton to affect Riverlinks ticket sales. So much so that that the venue has had to modify their online ticket sales operating procedures.

Being able to print at home is no longer an option and members of the public are being advised to only purchase tickets from the Riverlinks website and to not

use any ticket reseller. Purchasers will be required to pick up their tickets from the box office prior to the performance.

One of the tricks the unauthorised online resellers try is to suggest that there are only a few remaining tickets often at inflated prices with fake counters marking down the numbers of tickets remaining.

Riverlinks say that even with some of the big-name performances, those tickets are still available and the best way to find out is through the Riverlinks website.

We have arrived at Chobe National Park, which is the second largest in Botswana and we are doing morning and afternoon game drives. The morning drive starts at 6am and we are out of bed ready to go by 5:45am; it’s cold in the open-top 4x4s as we drive to the gates of the park.

Chobe is said to have the biggest concentration of elephants in Africa and it certainly seems so. During our game drive on the banks of the Chobe River, we see hundreds of elephants, some playing in the mud, others splashing in the water. Many are family groups and when two unfamiliar groups meet there is a display of trumpeting until they accept each other. At first, you think they are going to fight, the display gets louder and the body language looks menacing. But this is all part of the getting-toknow-you moment before they meet up close and personal.

We come across a tower of giraffe. There are a large number of them but they seem frozen to the spot and they are all looking to the nearby bushes. Then we see them, two lions looking for lunch. The giraffe stand their ground, the lions seem a little put off by the large number of them, and it’s a standoff.

We see many more animals including buffalo by the dozens, monkeys, baboons and a mass of birdlife. We come across a

leopard lying on the ground; it’s not unusual to find leopards in a tree, sometimes with their kill strung over a limb. Today, it’s a ground-level leopard and what a beautiful and proud-looking animal it is; Chobe has certainly stood up to its reputation.

We are now leaving Botswana and crossing into Zimbabwe.

As we approach the border it looks like a scene from Mad Max, trucks everywhere waiting for their paperwork to be completed, their loads have to be checked for contents and duty. We are told it’s not unusual for drivers to spend up to a week here getting verified by both countries.

It’s now our turn. We approach the Botswana border control and there are usually forms to be filled out but they have run out, not to worry just stamp in the passport will do today.

Now on the Zimbabwe side, there are lots of safari vehicles; people like us are waiting to cross and border control has plenty of forms for us to fill out.

We stand in line for an hour before reaching the window with the man with the stamp. We give him our documents and $30 US in cash as the entry fee and 10 minutes later our stamped passports are returned, we are in.

Huge week of junior footy H U N DR E DS of t he best ju n ior footballers from across the region battled it out at Deakin Reserve last week for A F L Vic toria’s a n nual V/ L i ne Cup championships.

Now in it’s sixteenth year as the official naming rights partner of the carnival, V/ L i ne has cont ributed ex tensively in providing the opportunity for young players to challenge themselves against the best in their age group across regional Victoria.

In 2019, the V/Line Cup has grown to include fourteen under-15 boys teams and eight under-15 girls teams, with more than 550 participants flocking to Greater Shepparton last week for the four-day carnival.

On Tuesday, the under-15 Goulburn Murray girls weren’t strong enough for the Richmond’s Next Generation Academy Pioneers Two, losing the match by 82 points at the final siren. The Goulburn Murray Girls team also struggled during Thursday’s match, losing to Geelong Cats Academy by 72 points.

The under-15 Goulburn Murray boys similarly struggled during the week, with Goulburn Murray One losing to Richmond’s Next Generation Academy Pioneers One by 38 points on Tuesday’s game. It was a challenging day for the Goulburn Murray Two boys too, who were defeated by Richmond’s Next Generation Academy Pioneers Two by 50 points.

AHEAD of the AFL grand final last Saturday, some of the region’s youngest footy fans dressed up in their team’s colours for a fun day of sports and fundraising.

As part of the Footy Colours Day fundraiser, children from the Arthur Dickmann Children’s Centre enjoyed a day in the sun, celebrating their team and participating in some footythemed activities last Wednesday.

The Footy Colours Day fundraiser occurs annually in September and is organised by Fight Cancer Foundation, a national charity dedicated to providing care, treatment and support for cancer patients and their families and funding vital research into cancer treatment and cures.

For Footy Colours Day, participants are encouraged to wear their favourite team’s colours and host an event at their school, organisation, group or club to raise muchneeded funds for kids with cancer.

Murray One edging closer to the Geelong Cats Academy One team and only losing by 13 points at the final siren. Goulburn Murray Two similarly only just fell short and were defeated by Geelong Cats Academy Two by 22 points.

Bushrangers recognised with awards FOOT BA LL stars from across the region were recognised at the Murray Bushrangers’ presentation awards night recently, following a huge NAB League Season.

The John Byrne medal for the under18s boys best-and-fairest was shared by two local stars, with Shepparton United’s Jye Chalcraft and Congupna’s Jimmy Boyer securing 23 votes each. Second place was awarded to Shepparton Bears’ Cam Wild with 18 votes, followed by the Bears’ Lachie Ash tying for third place alongside Albury’s Ben Kelly on 17 votes.

Talent was also recognised with local

players from the Murray Bushrangers’ girls’ side receiving recognitions during the presentation night. Shepparton United’s Kate Adams finished runner-up in the under-18 best-and-fairest count for the Daisy Pearce Medal at 18 votes, with Griffith Swans’ player Abby Favell taking home the prize, polling votes in each of her NAB League games.

E lsewhere , Sheppa r ton Un ited’s Kade Chalcraft received the Trainer’s Award, Shepparton-Notre’s Teagan Brett received the Most Improved Award and Finley’s Ben Ashley-Cooper walked away with the Coaches’ Award.
